sorry this post isn't ofmd related but thank god I got back on my meds on sunday bc if I had to hear my dad angrily grumble "it's every fucking show now" regarding one (1) extraordinarily insignificant character in a show mentioning her wife i honestly probably would've gone off the deep end. but hark, those sweet sweet amphetamines are kicking absolute ass when it comes to my emotional regulation and I'm simply opening my arms to my familiar friend; the same old feelings of disappointment and resignation 😌

Edward Teach: How to (de)Construct a Legendary Villain

The show introduces us to the legendary Blackbeard as a traditional Hollywood villain. He’s positioned, specifically, as Bond villain Ernst Stavro Blofeld, head of the global criminal organization SPECTRE. 

This character came to define the trope of the criminal mastermind, including the trope of never showing the villain’s face. The chair obscuring Ed’s body while his minion takes orders from across the desk is classic Blofeld. 

Along with Black Pete’s story, this is meant to pour in information about and expectations for Blackbeard in the short three episode buildup to his reveal: He’s big news, he’s bad news, and he’s the undisputed big dog whose underlings are cogs in his evil schemes.

Yet even in his first scene, the show begins to highlight the artifice at play and humanize Blackbeard and his subordinate. 

Izzy is doing his level best to play the sufficiently professional henchman. Edward flirts with him until he’s forced to drop the pretense, his henchman act collapsing into an exhausted and familiar “Oh, Edward, can't I just send the boys?”

And, if we look closely in retrospect, the reason Ed doesn’t turn to the camera is that his leg is elevated to give relief to its nagging knee injury. There’s a cane in the bin in the foreground beside Izzy. These stereotypical trappings of villainy are partly a product of Edward’s high seas career wearing his body down. 

On to Episode 4

Episode 4 isn’t a significant departure from any other day at SPECTRE flotilla headquarters for Edward. Yes, he meets a fun new guy. He also shows off what kind of brilliance is routinely demanded of him by his profession (of being a criminal mastermind) day in and day out, even if he hits a hitch. The emotional beat of the episode is exposing how this intense workplace grind is wearing him down. 

Next, he decides he’ll sail with that fun new guy, murder him, desecrate his corpse and take his identity. The kind of nefarious scheme a pro would expect of himself. 

The subsequent plot, then, does not come out of the idea that Ed, as Blackbeard, is any less than a man who’s achieved the pinnacle of Big Bad attainment, who in conversation with his subordinate checks off on killing entire crews as part of “the uzsh.” He really is that good, and Stede really would have made the perfect and unwitting mark Ed identifies him for. 

Two things are true at once:

Blackbeard is his world’s all time pirate villain overseeing the dispatching of countless lives (we see the population of a whole merchant vessel butchered just in Episode 5 — but laugh, because the sequence is shot through with camp), and

Ed Teach “works for Blackbeard.” 

Blackbeard isn’t who Ed is but a product of Ed’s theatrical skills. 

The show has, already, in Episode 4 cast a realistic light on the inevitable psychological toll of being the Big Bad mastermind keeping yourself at peak performance all the time. 

On to Episode 6

In Episode 6, the show deconstructs how one man, who has one gun and one knife just like everyone else, could feasibly construct such a legend.

This is, at the same time, a meta interrogation of how much effort a man like Blofeld and his infinite villainous counterparts across all cinema would have to actually put in to maintain their seemingly effortless style. 

Here, the answer is Ed is a theatre kid at heart, relying on all the same techniques the real life crew themselves are using to bring us the show.

We’re given a scene of Ed seemingly teleporting around a clouded ship, delivering cinematic lines like “Flee and survive, or face me and burn!” 

Barrels of sparklers stream flash powder into the air. The unnatural fog turns out to be the product of stagehands hard at work behind the scenes. We can extrapolate the flashes of lighting were likely, seeing as we can’t assume stage lights, the product of even more flash powder prepped in the style of old time photography. 

Ed ends up in an elaborate harness. One that Izzy’s doubtlessly removed him from countless times, as he reminds Ed if they don’t work together Ed’s balls will chafe. (Ostensibly, this all used to go smoother before stress aged their relationship to the point of its present squabbles.)

Now we can spy back earlier in the show and see even in Episode 3 they were employing theatrics. 

The smoke steaming behind Izzy as he fixes his spyglass on the Revenge isn’t mysteriously atmospheric. It’s from a big cauldron kept stoked on the deck of the ship, the handle of which peeks through. It’s a constant effort to keep the Queen Anne billowing across the ocean. 

And Forward to the End...

Ed goes through multiple phases of trying on different Eds in the next four episodes. From living as tea with seven sugars Ed, to deciding he needs to physically move on if he’s not going to ice this guy but being prompted by Lucius to explore being “being in a relationship Ed,” to us seeing Jack’s Ed and his ability to relish brotivities, to stripped down Ed on the beach, a blank slate now able to open himself to considering what to paint there, to Ed choosing what to paint there.

Unfortunately, while it’s a new work, it's a dark one.

Having been rejected by Stede and Izzy successively as they see him trying out tidying house, become upset for individual reasons, and walk out of the room in nearly identical scenes, Ed takes stock of what he has left and what capacities in his repertoire will assure his future security. 

We now see Ed pinning (stabbing) up a picture of the archetype he’s going to take on. This is Ed in his make-up trailer, looking to a character design by a concept artist and building a costume around it.

Grease paint, sword earring, jacket shrugged back on, full gloves, and, we see later, Stede's black cravat tight around his neck as @speckled-jim describes (and discusses further here) “like the albatross of Ancient Mariner fame,” reminding him that love itself can be a burden and to never allow himself to be that vulnerable again. 

This new Blackbeard variant cuts a genius, poetic, unmistakably more dangerous image than the comparatively relaxed tough biker pirate we first met.

His newer, dialed up villainous persona, the Kraken, is face revealed with, among the many cinematic variations on the trope, what tightly resembles another more recent Blofeld shot, at once telegraphing this Ed is the Big Bad again and reminding us that being any Big Bad is a high camp performance.

The seams are already fraying. Fang and Ed are both shown drinking heavily to help cast off their sympathies for their recent associates and loose their MUAHAHAHAHA laughter. Already, before this scene, Izzy’s “Blackbeard is himself again!” is paired with the manic smile of a man who knows that whoever the new boss is, it’s not the original Blackbeard and he's in over his head.

But the three of them cut imposing figures on deck, and the future will tell if the movie magic holds.

Ed turns the card between his fingers like he’s flipping a coin. Over it goes, over and over again, knuckle to knuckle. On one side: the flouncy embossed flourishes of the Barnes family crest. On the obverse: a message that mocks him with its simplicity, just visible in the glow of a night lantern. Mr Hands and I shall await you at La Gonâve. What it says is very little. What it implies is very much. Ricky wants the Revenge to sail around the jut of the mainland, almost up to Port-au-fuckin’-Prince, where the waters will bristle with gunships. He wants Ed and Stede to roast themselves like suckling pigs, stuff their own mouths with apples, then present themselves on a silver fucking platter for the crown’s discerning taste. Izzy sitting way in the back during storytime, Izzy not eating with the crew, Izzy being scowly and standoffish with the crew, Izzy not making an effort - is it just disdain and a solitary nature, or is part of it maybe not wanting to get any closer than he has to with people he thinks they're probably going to kill? What's the point? Until the Art of Fuckery Izzy genuinely believes Ed's plan will still happen, and even then he thinks Ed just needs and maybe even wants a push because Ed doesn't say "we're not doing this" until Izzy is at his wit's end and literally has a sword in his hand. If Stede does die, and Ed takes his place, any crew they couldn't trust to keep that a secret would have to be given "the uzsh".

Were any of the men lost fighting the Spanish men Izzy was at all fond of? Friendly with? Men whose skills he had respect for? We don't know. He cared enough to mention their loss. Why would he try and open himself up to muppetland and trade stories and share moments with the muppets when he thinks he's going to be murdering them any day now?

I keep seeing a lot of conversation revolving around Izzy, Ed, and who needs redeeming.

So, first of all - Ed is the protagonist of this little story, so his redemption is guaranteed. It may not be easy, it may be complicated, but it will happen.

On the subject of it being complicated, or an uphill slog - why should it have to be? PoC who have redemption arcs in media are always having to run through troops and leap over walls to redeem themselves, when compared to white characters who have done the same if not worse. Why can't Ed's redemption with the crew be gentle? He got into the mess he did through an 'Act of Grace', why can't one that is more meaningful and not used as cudgel be extended to him?

Now, to me, Izzy is a different story and I'm going to tell you why.

The thing is, is while OFMD is hopeful and silly, it isn't a foolish show. What I mean by it not being foolish is, is that it spends time showing the benefit and journey of 'found family'. It shows the choices that have to be made and the impact that it has on the people who you are choosing, as well as the person making that choice.

What it does not do, is show choosing people who won't do what's necessary to become family and a safe haven, as a good thing to do. And that is what Izzy is. He's not safe. He's not making good decisions and he will bring death and hell down on PoC and those allied with them to have things remain not safe and not good.

Why is there the assumption that he should be redeemed? Yeah, yeah, Con's a fan fave. I'm talking about the character - y'know. The ACTUAL GUY DOING THINGS WE ACTUALLY SAW in the show.

Every white guy isn't redeemable. There is actually a lesson in letting people who don't value you go. This lesson can't just be shown in the context of larger forces, like the colonial power of the Navy, or the king. For PoC, there should be a line that is in the sand regarding what you'll accept in circumstances that you can control.

Look at the end of Ep10. Everyone is fucking miserable except for Izzy. He pushed and pushed and got what he wanted and while Ed has agency in how he dealt with it - what could be done differently?

Was Ed supposed to say, "Oh, you know what - you're right. I'm over it, back to the uzsh, Iz." After "edward better watch his fucking step?"

Izzy made a choice there in demanding Ed become the 'savage' he's fixated on.

What is redeemable about a person that demands your inhumanity and you gurning to the tune that white supremacy picked out?

Tough to say what the writers will do, since fandom went out of it's way hard and fast to say that the guy who is exactly like that, is one that they love the most.

Why do you think Ed went back to the ship at the end of the show, rather than going to China on his own? Why go back to the ship, try to be Stede, then give it up and double down as Blackbeard

as per uzshe: many thoughts on this.

practically: where else does he go? i know we have to go galaxy brain and just accept that ed's old ship is not really a factor anymore just because/until the show says so on this one, but i'm willing to go with them. but even if we don't take that for granted, ed would have to do some real work to locate it.

next level down: ed's heading to the only place left that isn't full of strangers. the crew of the revenge en masse are even newer in his life than they were in stede's, but he was ready to be their captain, too. and then there's izzy. izzzzzy izzy izzy. who is... let's go with 'undeniably a familiar face in spite of ( gestures vaguely at his picklejar )'. at the end of the day, no matter what conclusions he comes to, ed has been left behind for Reasons Unknown. he is really sad because that really sucks, and he doesn't want to be around a bunch of strangers or alone.

and then: i would think that like instead of just sailing away because ed made his call, stede creeped on them all night and debated if this was REALLY a breakup, ed was hoping maybe stede would come back.

maybe he was detained! i'm sure ed entertained the idea something might have happened to stede, but he doesn't know chauncey is wandering around loose and the guards on the island are pretty laissez faire with their who can go where and do what rules, as far as we can tell. once that window closed, i think he told himself/hoped on some level (who knows how conscious) that he came back for stede, once he realized he fucked up. surely stede would do the same, etc.

and the irony? if izzy had his little rage tantrum a day later, if ed sang his song a day later, if for literally ONCE IN HIS LIFE izzy fuckin took a chill pill and i don't know, went and screamed into a bucket until the urge to fuck up somebody else's day over his weird shit passed and he could go do anything but make everyone around him miserable, if the crew's laughter isn't perfectly timed, if ed doesn't lose his fingernails only grip on the keeping his own cool ledge and make some toe-flavored bad choices— ed's right.

stede thought better of it! he needed mary's help to get it, but hey— ed needed jack's, too. (jack's version of help was... cackling about what a lil stinker he is and being a dickbag, but hey. it DID provide ed the info he needed to see the situation for what it was, beyond his own insecurities and fears.)

truly i love how old school they get with this. if the revenge half of the finale takes place one day later in the timeline while stede's stays the same, if the timeline stays the same but a couple people make different choices at different times, stede is all AHOY THERE, IT IS I! FRESH FROM THE DUMBASSERY AND READY TO HAVE ADULT DISCUSSIONS WITHOUT BEING PROMPTED AT LONG LAST! literally nothing goes the same.

there's no promise it goes better (though... i think it would, personally) but you adjust these tiiiiiiny lil factors and everything changes.

Ed lays out the plan to the crew. Most of them will pose as Blackbeard’s crew, the rest as Stede’s crew who have been taken captive. Ed will hold court in Stede’s cabin and inform Sam Bellamy that the Revenge is part of Blackbeard’s fleet now and they’re still flying the cat flag to lure in unsuspecting merchants.

“Stede’ll pose as my servant in there.” Ed gestures at the cabin. “Pouring tea, waiting on me hand and foot, the uzsh.”

Stede has the brief mental image of literally being on his hands and knees in front of Ed, and that...well, it’s not an unpleasant image. Not if it’s Ed. Not if Ed told him to.

Sam Bellamy turns up and obviously the only way to keep him from attacking the Revenge is for Stede to act like he's Blackbeard's loyal servant. And then Stede has a few kink awakenings along the way and is very unequipped to deal with that.
