Okay my guilty read is called the All For The Games series and it’s because it’s Trash

Truly the epitome of “sometimes we throw shit at Kevin” sound on TikTok. (Love Kevin. Kevin is such an idiot and we Love him)

It’s about a made up sport called Exy and a boy named Neil on the run from his dads gang. He gets a position in the “ragtag team” of the world. I won’t say more to be wary of spoilers, but damn Nora (author) really threw some things together and made a cake (novel) somehow.

But for real though, there’s some genuine racism (author bias not an explored theme) & real shit mental health representation among other horrendous themes. Proceed with caution. It will change ur brain chemistry but idk in what way.

so guys guys guys i was just retreading The Kings Men for the nth time and I caught something and now i’m confused. So spoiler warning now!!!

Right before Neil gets taken by Lola, in the game he asks Andrew to shut out the strikers and Andrews like “Not for free.” and Neil says “Anything.” then the game continues and Andrew plays like Neil has never seen and Andrew GOES HARD. But my question is we never got to know what Andrew planned to ask of Neil later after the game since he heard everything in the interrogation with the cops. My Aaron Hcs

i was shocked and disturbed to realize that i have not yet shared my aaron hc’s so here ya go (this is pretty lighthearted but beware of themes of trauma and abuse similar to canon):

he doesn’t drink

when he got sober he got completely sober and now he doesn’t drink at all—there’s plenty of virgin drinks for him on Eden’s nights

he does, however, drink coffee pretty regularly

purely black, and whenever someone calls him on it he replies, “what can i say. i’m a masochist.”

he’s a beanie guy

perfect for pulling down over his face when he wants to lay low, covers his ears, covers his beadhead, goes well with any outfit

he wears them all the time

he definitely skateboards

and he’s really good at it?? no one knows when he had time to learn but he can skate like a pro

he’s incredibly intelligent both in an academic sense and a street-smart sense

he can do college level calculus and also replace the muffler on his car without any sort of manual/instructions

he has one mechanical pencil that he’s used since the fifth grade

he just keeps replacing the lead and erasers

he has a lot of internalized homophobia and racism because of how he was raised but when nicky brings this to his attention he honest to god tries to get better

he reads a lot of inclusive media

obviously he’s not perfect but i think he works really hard, especially after graduation and a few years of therapy when he’s in a better head space

he actually really enjoys testing his own ideals and making himself think

which means he loves philosophy

he doesn’t take any classes on it but he has five philosophy textbooks and is constantly checking out books and biographies on philosophers from the library

he likes to go to flea markets on saturday mornings

he’ll find expensive pieces of furniture and haggle the price down by like 50% before proclaiming that he’s not looking to buy anyway

he never leaves with anything other than like a trinket for katelyn

he definitely loves podcasts

but not pretentious podcasts

he listens to humorous, satirical, story-telling, and entertainment podcasts

he listens to *insert your favorite light-hearted podcast* alllllll the time

but he listens to them really stoically, especially in public

idk he just doesn’t really listen to music but he also doesn’t enjoy being alone with his thoughts or thinking too hard when it comes to entertainment so he just pops in his earbuds and listens to strangers crack jokes for an hour

he actually really enjoys hanging out with kevin

they have the same sense of dry humour

they also treat each other like normal people

everyone else sees kevin as an exy-loving freak and aaron as an apathetic asshole and the foxes handle them with cautious pity because of their pasts

but together they just kinda vibe and they allow the other to exist outside of the box everyone else keeps them in

i’m sure that makes no sense lol but kevin and aaron vibe!! and while i am not personally a kevaaron shipper i understand the compatibility

and of course, aaron loves katelyn

a lot

like, he never ever trusted women (or anyone really) because of his mother but the moment he met katelyn he knew he wanted to spend his whole life with her

he feels safe and understood by her and he does his best to make her feel safe and understood

he’s a good guy, and he exists outside of the “tiny homophobic asshole” box we tend to put him in

My sister is a librarian, and she does storytime with preschoolers, and I'm helping her record them since she cant do them at the library because of covid, but for some reason this time while helping her I thought of Andrew and Neil doing this as like. Community stuff?? Like they have to do an exy themed on with their pro team, and I just keep thinking of no one expecting Andrew to do the hand movements with the songs, but he does, and he even reads one of the books, and the kids love him???

Same anon I ran out of room: idk just something about Andrew deadpan reading green eggs and ham to a bunch of 3 year olds and they are absolutely enthralled by him just kinda makes me happy???

Just finished All the King's Men

All for the Game was a rollercoaster of emotions. I got the excitement of an sports anime, the thrill of dark academia (in jock) and the tears of a tragedy. It was aggressive and sappy and triggering. I cried a lot, in public.

I'll start off with the things I didn't like, so I can save the good things for last.

Cons:

-Too many loose ends. I always appreciate extra content, but I feel a book (series) should feel completed without any extra content. In this case it didn't. When I finished ATKM I was confused -there were the Moriyamas who still might execute Neil, Kevin and Jean; Renee and Jean, are they a thing or not?, does Andrew like Exy or was this more of an "Neil's into it, so I gotta play" thing; there was not enough closure, everything felt raw and fickle...

-Sakavic spent 17 years with these books, she matured in that time and developed new ideas, but there were inconsistencies, that were rather confusing like Kevin and Neil should have been a thing at the start, but she changed her mind, so reading that Kevin had a gf was quite shocking, because after all these Kevin/Andrew/Neil interactions, I and probably everybody else including Neil thought Kevin was into boys. At some point I thought he was asexual, because he was so disinterested in human relationships and was just obsessed with Exy. I got glimpses of the extra content and according to it Katelyn and Aaron didn't have kids, but still did though.

-Neil's father introduced after such an long time and instantly killed off. It ruined the climax. I was anticipating this, I was thrilled and excited and flushed and nervous and suddenly it was over(?). For me it emphasised how unplanned and messy the drafts were.

(-The writing style was rather simple, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's kinda disappointing sometimes)

(-All these speech about German, French and Japanese and not one single word in one of these languages)

(-This is probably my fault for being stupid, but what is the difference between Exy and Lacrosse?? Please help)

Pros:

(-The writing style fit the whole theme. Anything else would have been weird.)

-It was raw and thrilling and emotional.

-Important messages: Most dark academia books are kinda idealising drug and alcohol abuse and elitism in a twisted was, but we got the underdogs against the elitist pricks and Andrew stopped his medication and crackerdust. (It still kinda idealises alcohol and cigarattes, but the message's still there)

-The CHARACTERS. Every fucking one of them. (Except Aaron, because he was an annoying shit).

-The Neil/Kevin/Andrew (+ Nicky) interactions. Love them all.

-The GURLS. I just couldn't get enough of them. And Matt.

-Interesting new idea. Just the perfect mix of dark academia and sports anime, I guess.

This series sure as hell is flawed, but it's still enjoyable af like I got addicted. My mum would have beat me, if she saw me reading this instead of learning for my finals, but it was worth it.

We had despaired of ever finding this, but our teammate S has amazing powers of recall and was able to sleuth it out! It’s a super fun fic with soft, happy andreil and jerejean, plus solid Kevin friendship with everyone. By popular demand the author added an epilogue where the couples play The Newlywed Game with Kevin as host. (The second couple is jerejean, not katelyn/aaron.)

So I'm looking for a fic where Neil and Andrew secretly got married. It all starts with the two of them going to the city hall to get married, and someone captures them on camera entering and leaving the building. But there's a twist: they brought Kevin as a witness, and when they entered the building, Kevin walked alongside Andrew, but exited next to Neil (or the other way around, I don't remember). That's why the whole world thinks that Neil and Andrew hate each other so much that it led to a court case. Then at some point, the three of them + Jean are invited to a TV show. And at some point, the host uses the word "elope," and Neil starts to panic and get confused in a game they were playing on that TV show.

I know exactly which fic you mean, your description is perfect! It’s part 1 of the series below. Funnily enough somebody else was looking for this fic quite recently, which just goes to show how popular it is.
