It's always easier when you go with the flow
Ride the wave
See where it takes you
The moment you fight back
You can't let it break you
Tear me down
Don’t let it bury me
I won't sink into my grave
Stare into the sun
‘Til there's nothing left of me

rating music please don't hurt me #20 | lil boat 3.5 - lil yachty
Tumblr media
every five entries, i will look into a significant (not always a masterpiece) album from the past (totally not a stolen idea). today we're going to talk about lil yachty's album lil boat 3.5.
lil boat 3.5 marks an interesting end to the lil boat trilogy. the two first album, lil boat 1 and 2, were an unexplainable mess during my first glance of listening, but i may not go further talking about this because i haven't got a full experience with the two pieces yet. to be honest, lil boat 3.5 is a little bit underrated, and i mean a little bit because the album is more tolerable than the two first albums, but still in a messy and unpolished fashion.
please note that i'm rating lil boat 3.5, which is the deluxe version of the original album lil boat 3. 8 new songs were added in the deluxe bundle of lil boat 3.5, they are alright, but it doesn't improve the overall quality of the album that much.
the new production style improves the album by a decent amount, and fortunately for me, it just really fits my taste alright. the production was the thing that hooked me up, but it also was the thing i feel gray about, because its kind of repetitive. the production is very energetic and fun to listen, its so crazy it made me dumbfounded, but is a hot mess sometimes.at least they can make the retro-ass synth better? but hey they hooked me up so thats a point.
this is yachty philosophy in lil boat 3.5: guest-list in front and im in the back. every got a great spotlight in the verse, except for oliver tree because how would you even let him in your album, yachty?
overall, the new album is interesting and tasty to bite the least, but that's only in my opinion. in a retrospective view, the album is yet quite messy and tasteless, and goofy, like on crack. its not boring thoguh even so its an career-defining album from the artist and will lie in his legacy, and yes it will be an interesting one.
this album may not be in your favorites, but it will be in my 'wtf is this bullshit i love this' list.
underrated gem(s): lil diamond boy - its a criminal fact that this song is so unpopular, LIKE ITS SO GOOD, t.d - every guest ate and left no crumbs, if there is crumbs it is prob lying on lil yachty deadass, westside - no comment its just not bad and not not good.
tracks that i rec listening: flex up - hello lgbtq community especially the lesbian couples from the ghetto who is a rage rap fan, coffin - i really like this repeating and hard hitting beat into the verse, charmin, just how i'm feelin', in my stussy's, top down - roblox sim game ahh beat idk, split/whole time - i went so insane when the smooth transition happened SKJDKJF, pardon me - this song will always be catchy asf, demon time, can't go, oprah's bank account - love this and drake maybe uhhhhhhhh, range rover sports truck, lemon head - throughout the song is a repetitive sample that plays like you're using that one electronic somewhat midi piano on garage band that plays the sample in tune when played.
worst track: certified - the synths are horrible, there are tracks as rubbish as this but it is explainable to be on top of this monstrosity
overall score 6.3/10 - this is all opinion so pls no hate
listen to the album here:

Rules: pick an artist or a band and share your favorite song from each of their albums, then tag some mutuals!
tagged by @batmurdock ; thank you!
i'm doing it. taylor swift discography, let's go. my blog, my fucking rules 😤
taylor swift (2006): cold as you; so, like, girl was 16 when she released this album, and a lot of the songs show it, but i think this one has shades of her later songwriting maturity, and still remains an underrated deep cut on her discography.
fearless (2008): untouchable; so, i know i picked the song on this album that's technically a cover (and actually the only cover she has recorded!). but — i've heard the original song, and while it's good, too, taylor just really makes this song her own. she completely changes the tone, and makes it something special, in my opinion.
speak now (2010): ours; this is just a really sweet little country love ballad. i love it.
red (2012): all too well; red is one of my favorite albums, and there are so many standout songs on here, but i think all too well is just, objectively, a very fine example of songwriting craft. "and you call me up again just to break me like a promise/so casually cruel in the name of being honest", like, still goes hard. come on, even if you don't like her music, you have to admit this!
1989 (2014): clean; i love the simplicity of this song, sonically, but how it's like, anything but simple in message — and it feels like a catharsis. i may have a personal bias for choosing this one, because it got me through a particularly rough time, but.
reputation (2017): dancing with our hands tied; i've long called taylor swift the queen of doomed relationships, but i actually think this is her best doomed relationship song. it just... captures the desperation, the pizzaz. "i'd kiss you as the lights went out/swaying as the room burned down/i'd hold you as the water rushes in" like, whew. this song is why my mattelektra (taylor's version) playlist exists LMFAO
lover (2019): cornelia street; this song is so underrated that it's actually criminal. it's just... such a beautiful portrait of the uncertainty and ferocity of falling in love. DON'T @ ME!!!!!!
folklore (2020): august; this may actually be my favorite song of hers, period. lyrically, this song is beautiful; musically, it fits the vibe that it's trying to convey. it's really just an incredible composition; you just really get transported back to teenage summer love in a wistful way.
evermore (2020): ivy; okay, i love. all of evermore. but i hAVE to pick ivy as my favorite, because i can't not. this song has sapphic vibes all over the place.
midnights (2022): the great war; the metaphor game in the lyrics is off the charts. i love the production.

When it comes to criminally underrated trios, Blonde Redhead is one that happened to aim for extremes and managed to create a very diverse catalog that spanned the gap between art-rock and synthpop. Over the course of 1995-2014, they banged out nine full-length albums jumping from one style to another, albeit slowly over a nearly twenty-year period. They started off with an indie art-punk sound, later reinventing their noise into a dream-pop soup that didn’t necessarily sit well with all their core audience. Their vibe went from noisy and organic to more stripped-down and electronic, settling on a very emotional though deconstructed sound near 2017, when they released their last EP. Never having achieved mega-levels of success, chances are you’ve come across their tunes in passing or purely accidentally. In 2022, they opened for one of my favorite metal bands of all time, Tool, and some of their albums have been mixed by industry big shots like Alan Moulder, who has also mixed albums for big acts like Nine Inch Nails and The Killers. I find myself coming back to their melodies, delicate lyrics and overall unorthodox arrangements in music every now and again. Too often, bands that make it big adopt a signature sound, and Blonde Redhead doesn’t do that. They instead, developed a noise that either evolves or devolves based almost purely on your perspective and taste. I prefer their later works, and the one I posted is my very favorite of theirs, Oslo from 2010’s Penny Sparkle. I’ve listened to their earlier stuff and to be honest, I appreciate the latter portion of their catalog so much more for the sincerity, poetry, and sad beauty they managed to accomplish near the very end of their production cycle. With lead singer Kazu Makino doing her own solo work nowadays, I’m not sure what the future of this band holds. So smash play, and if you like it, check out their other works. Please!? Don’t let acts like this slip into irrelevance. I, for one, want even more!

an unreasonable gush post for fictional band, infant sorrow.
Tumblr media
infant sorrow is without a doubt one of the greatest musical moments in all of history, fictional or not. if 'coming up' doesn't legitimately inspire you, you're lying. if 'inside you' isn't your wedding song, you're lame.
so let's get into what makes this amazing musical experience what it is. let's talk russel brand/aldous snow. the man is a BRILLIANT creator of literally all things. he's an intellectual mind with a spiritual soul and a comedic outlook on life. his comedy is always quick witted and deliberate. this plays a role in the music of Infant Sorrow. now, let's get into the actual music. we'll start with the ONLY song i DON'T like, just to get it out of the way:
'furry walls.' i feel like this song was thrown together quickly as a lubricant for a scene in the film. this song is not canon part of the discography for me. period.
Tumblr media
moving on. let's get into my FAVORITES:
'yeah yeah oi oi' --this is really a britpop masterpiece. it's fun, it's catchy, it's witty, and it just makes you fucking smile. the lyrics are so sharp but sweet and hilarious. case in point: "yeah yeah, oi oi, put your hand up for sex, for me and me helmet and wherever it winds up next" sweet and cute, but then "put your hands up for our queen, for shagging five birds in the back of limosine" dirty and delightful. and the bridge? beautiful. i could go on and on about this song, but we've got more to get to, so.. YEAH YEAH, OI OI, put your dominant hand....on the mouse to scroll to the next paragraph.
'i am jesus' --this song is CRIMINALLY underrated (within the 'infant sorrow' universe and within the real life universe). let's take a little look at the lyrics. "i am jesus, welcome to the church of me" a fantastic start. polarizing to some, DELIGHTFUL to intellectuals. "i've come to feed the fish, heal the world, but first a dirty little kiss" FLAWLESS. "i wear a thorny crown, i live in Honeytown" ;;it's always bordering on sacreligious but in a way that is instantly forgivable because it's so stinking CAMP. "i am mahatma, taking it to the streets, give me your daughter, let me rub your dirty feet." hilarious because in the bible, men literally would give away or sell their daughters. fun little dig at the ridiculousness of biblical religion. and as for rubbing dirty feet, i'm a foot lover myself. so i always appreciate a reference to the love of feet, especially dirty ones. there's actually the most romantic story in the bible where mary magdalane is so in love with jesus, but she doesn't know how to show it the right way 'cause he's literally fucking JESUS, so she shows her love by washing his feet with her HAIR. anyway. that turned into a weird tangent, but it seemed necessary. well, MOVING ON then...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
let's get into one of the absolute BANGERSest bangers: 'bangers, beans, & mash' --this song .... is golden. "a suicide in SoHo grand, my wrists so tired from working with my hands..." now this is a BAR and a half. period. this song is honestly filled with so much real emotion and honest feeling. and the musicality is beautiful. "why has the world gone so still? the world is so still, i feel that my next meal might be my last...so will you come for my bangers....my beans and mash?" i mean you can FEEL emotion from this. it's an honest diary put into music form with a catchy brit-centric title and chorus. brilliant. the only word that describes this is BRILLIANT. i feel like i don't even need to go more in depth into this song, as it's the most well known from the film, and everyone loves it and knows it. if you know you know.
let's get into an underground hit, 'just say yes' --a double entendre beauty of a song. if the beatles had a better sense of humor, they would have written this song. "mother mary, marijuana, uncle charlie, top banana" alone is beatles-esque in nature. but this whole song is a convoluted love letter, and everything brit-punk, brit-pop is about honestly. his love is an addiction. and he's a drug dealer in love. when he says "snort me chase me swallow me whole, or take me up your arse if that's the way you wanna go" i felt that. lovely for love and still witty and hilarious.
Tumblr media
let's get into the least favorite (canonically from the film's inhabitants) 'african child' --i fucking love this song. deadass. it is SO FUCKING HILARIOUS. disrespectful, condescending, ignorant, and incredibly self-aware. russel brand is such a master at this kind of humor. he truly captures the "#activism" of celebrity culture. it's fucking CHOICE. period. "i have crossed the mystic desert to snap pictures of the poor; i've invited them to bruch, let em crash out on my flooooor" i mean FUCKING HELL that's great. so out of touch and ridiculous. it's just...and i use the damn word again...BRILLIANT. but i think one of the best touches is that he's actually doing a Swahili chant. he took the time and effort (in the film's universe) to gather the language and memorize and learn, but not to actually learn anything about the culture or educate himself. fucking amazing. let's move on, GOD THIS POST IS LONG.
Tumblr media
'coming up' --the magnum fucking opus. this song is probably such an honest piece from Russel himself (as well as aldous in the film). the parallels between russel and aldous are almost innumerable (which is why his films are so funny ;;because he's not playing a character, he's just exaggerating himself if even exaggerating. the lyrics are inspirational, it captures the vibe of a true power ballad. it's just MINT. in every possible way. when you've run out of drugs and you're going through it, it's called "coming down." this song, 'coming up' is the absolute opposite. done with the drugs, done with the misfortune, done with self-denial and pain and struggle and sadness. he's coming up instead of coming down. it's a beautiful word choice honestly. plus, "and for twenty bucks in the alley i'm going down, down, down" is a hilarious line. xD and the honesty and pain in "for the ma who always honored me i'm going down, down, down ;;for my pa who never wanted me can you hear what's going on? i'm coming UPPPPPPPPPP" honestly enough to make my chemically imbalanced ass actually cry.
and obviously, 'the clap' --an absolute banger. brit-pop royalty. it's catchy, it's fun, it's just subversive enough. it's a great addition to the film's universe. and it symbolized a special moment for aldous in the movie where he started to remember who he used to be and really kicked off his journey to self-realization.
oh shit! and 'searching for a father' --this one slaps and HURTS. for all of us with daddy issues....well, this song just works.
now onto some honorable mentions featuring the brilliant jackie q. because if 'ring round' isn't on your playlist, you're not getting my aux cord.
Jackie Q
'Supertight'
'You got to me Warm and you're tight I'm going to fuck you so deep I'll give you a lobotomy I'm a zombie You dug me from my grave You took me from Africa And made me your slave"
if these lyrics don't jostle your jimmy you're a dummy. this shit is hilarious, and so smartly worded for a song so debaucherous. "i'm gonna get precarious, i'm a motherfucking stratavarious" i mean...that's literally incredible. this song is a 10/10 would recommend.
'ring round' --needs no explanation. song about a tight butt hole. it's fucking perfect. pop perfection.
OH MY GOD AND I FORGOT 'LITTLE BIRD' i'm already done with this post but i'll be damned if i don't mention this one. it's literally beautiful with moments of comedy and silliness.
also 'riding daphne' is a fucking SMASH HIT.
and i can't believe i didn't do a paragraph on 'inside you' argh. but i love it ;;it's beautiful and remember "there's so much more than just a screw inside of you"
so anyway, this post is long as actual shit. i could do a whole 'nother freakout just about the movies 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' and 'Get Him to the Greek' but for now i'll leave it at the music. as far as i'm concerned, Infant Sorrow, is a REAL band, Aldous Snow is a real musician, and this is a perfectly legitimate fangirl moment.

favorite phineas and ferb episodes?
thank you for sending this :’) I’m gonna do this in chronological order and not as, like, a ranking, because otherwise I’m sure I’ll forget some. also of course I like ALL episodes of PnF except Act Your Age, these are just ones that stand out to me and that I go out of my way to rewatch
Mom’s Birthday
It’s underrated, but I love this one a lot because it shows how Candace can sometimes feel insecure because of just how great her brothers are and how grand their projects are, and then of course also shows that the brothers love their big sister and always want to include her and give her a chance to shine. I always like when Candace is written as more than just a foil to her brothers and as her own independent character.
Dude, We’re Getting the Band Back Together
Pretty much the perfect PnF episode in my opinion! Lots of familial/sibling love, Candace working together with the boys on a plan, FOUR great songs, “not yet, Ferb”, and our introduction to Love Händel who I adore.
Phineas and Ferb: Summer Belongs to You!
Specials totally count, right? Anyway, every character is so great in this. It’s one of the only times we see Phineas lose his optimism in the series, and his friends come together to help finish their plan and help him regain his hope. Canderemy becomes 100% canon, Ferb’s “sometimes, you have to meet the people you love halfway” quote is wonderful, and the final song just pulls everything together. “I can’t imagine having better little brothers” :’) If you haven’t noticed, episodes where the siblings all clearly love each other are faves of mine.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Meet Max Modem!
I WILL be honest, this one is on here mostly for the song being so amazing. But again, it’s another cute family-centric plot about not comparing yourself harshly to others and the people in your life loving you exactly the way you are. Also Lawrence and Linda’s relationship and just them as characters are SO underrated I will die on this hill.
Rollercoaster: the Musical!
Took a (relatively) bad episode and made it an amazing one. ALL the songs from this are amazing, they simply DO NOT miss. Also I love how Phineas is like “I dunno, I think all our friends would just go along with bursting into spontaneous song and dance” and then they do.
Bully Bromance Breakup
Bujeet. Enough said.
Where’s Perry?
PERRY GETS STRUCK BY THE GO-HOME-INATOR AND TELEPORTS TO AFRICA, WHERE PHINEAS AND FERB ARE, INSTEAD OF TO HIS PHYSICAL HOUSE, BECAUSE HIS FAMILY IS HIS HOME. I WILL NEVER GET OVER THAT!!!!! Episodes where Perry shows how much he loves the Flynn-Fletchers are also faves.
Operation Crumbcake
Purely on here for the ending, I love it so much. Ferb and Isabella’s friendship is criminally underrated.
Phineas and Ferb: Star Wars
A retelling of Episode IV, but Phineas and Ferb are there. They don’t replace the existing characters, the main story of Episode IV is going on in the background, it’s just that now Phineas and Ferb are also there. I maintain that this is a more enjoyable viewing experience than the actual Star Wars.
Tales from the Resistance: Back to the 2nd Dimension
I LOVE THE 2D CHARACTERS SO MUCH I WILL ALWAYS ADORE THE 2D CHARACTERS AND I WILL ALWAYS WANT MORE CONTENT OF THEM!!!!!! 2-Phineas and 2-Ferb learn what summer fun is, Perry the Platyborg gets to enjoy time with his family after being held captive and brainwashed for so long, and 2-Candace begins to overcome her PTSD. Amazing episode 10/10, things clearly aren’t perfect in the 2D yet because of the open ending, but they’re better than the old dystopia :’)
There’s my list!!!! Obviously non-exhaustive and I’m sure there’s still episodes I’m forgetting because I was just reading through an episode list and picking what stood out in my mind. Again, every episode except Act Your Age is great in one way or another, there isn’t really a “bad” Phineas and Ferb episode except Act Your Age.

40 through 49 for the song asks please 💕
40. Which was the best concert you’ve ever been to?
So far I'd have to say it was going to see Huey Lewis and the News with my parents before covid times. I am planning more concert trips comes 2023 though cause more of my favorite bands are performing again.
41. Have you ever been to a music festival? If not, would you like to go?
I have not! I almost went to one this summer, but stuff happened and I wasn't able to go.
42. Your favorite(s) “no skips” album(s):
How long do you have? The very first Led Zeppelin song is just a masterpiece. Any Greta Van Fleet album. Amy Winehouse Back To Black. Until The Money Runs Out by Mac Saturn. Any Santana album. Nothin But Love by Robert Cray. There's SO MANY that I could name.
43. Do you enjoy musicals? If so, what’s your favorite?
I do! I just recently went to see Wicked with my friend (continues to be amazing). I'm a big big Mamma Mia, and Phantom of The Opera fan.
44. Have you watched any musician’s biopics? Do you have a favorite?
YES! The Runaways is absolutely one of my favorites. Get On Up is also phenomenal. La Bamba is also one I grew up with so that's become a favorite. There's honestly a lot on my to watch list.
45. A non-musical movie or show with a soundtrack you love:
Last Night in Soho has a good ass soundtrack full of 60s music that I play constantly. As well as Almost Famous, Dirty Dancing, When Harry Met Sally, and sooo many others. Also just catch me replaying ever Star Wars soundtrack ever cause I'm that person.
46. Do you like comedy songs? If so, do you have a favorite?
I haven't listened to enough to form a solid opinion on them to be honest.
47. Is there an artist you used to dislike but learned to like because of a friend’s influence?
I'm not a big country music fan but a friend really got me into Chris Stapleton.
48. Who’s an artist you think it’s criminally underrated and deserves more recognition?
I don't know if they're underrated, but Thee Sacred Souls are just...they've got some of the best music I've heard lately.
49. Is there a cover you like more than the original version?
Turning Pages by Sydney Rose. Her version inspired a whole ass fic series because it's that good.

Album of the year
1967
Runners up:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Winner: The Who Sell Out (The Who)
Tumblr media
This is obviously another huge year for music, but one where a lot of the “big hitters” are not exactly personal favorites of mine. Still I had to exclude quite a few amazing albums I *do* really love (like Surrealistic Pillows and The Piper at the Gates of Dawn) and that always sucks. Anyway, can you guess what the theme here is? Whenever I think about 1967, I always have to wonder if there was anybody on the planet who was NOT taking drugs. But to be honest at least on an artistic level we’re all better for it. The Byrds double down on the psychedelia as David Crosby graces the album with his trippy songwriting (especially on one of his most spellbinding songs, Everybody’s Been Burned) and Chris Hillman also comes out of nowhere with pop gems like Have You Seen Her Face. “Expecting To Fly” alone would be reason enough to have Buffalo Springfield Again on this list, but then of course you *also* have other unreal songs like Mr. Soul, Bluebird, Hung Upside Down…all on side 1. Sure. Between the Buttons is somehow even more criminally underrated than Aftermath, for my money one of the most creative and cohesive albums The Stones have ever made. The one exception to my psychedelic dominated top 5 here is Leonard Cohen’s incredible debut: not only the songwriting is already out of this world, but despite the simple arrangements it’s got such a unique, immersive atmosphere and sound I particularly love. And finally, yet another album I don’t think quite gets the credit it deserves. Sell Out is The Who’s first real concept album and the whole idea behind it is just so brilliant, taking inspiration from 60s English pirate radios but also reflecting on their own place in society as a successful rock band. The only slight problem I’ve always had with their otherwise unbeatable lineup is the fact that to me Roger Daltrey as a vocalist has never felt like the perfect fit for The Who. He’s amazing at conveying the anthemic rage behind songs like My Generation or Won’t Get Fooled Again, but not nearly as much when it comes to Pete’s more quirky, self-aware and ironic style of songwriting. That’s why I think this album works as well as it does, because it’s the quirkiest of them all and the one where Pete sings lead more often. It also features probably his most hauntingly beautiful, free flowing melodies, their best sounding harmonies and I love that listening to so many of these songs (like Sunrise and Rael 1) you can tell Tommy was just around the corner.

Hmmm sometimes i wonder why beatles expert didn't focus on Ringo much compared to the other 3. He must have a lot of interesting stories too. And i like Ritch's insight about the other 3, it shows how much he understand them and honestly the most emotionally mature in that group. I want to hear more of his insight and how the fuck he survived death 3 times.
My goodness, me too! His persistent and unwavering love of music and performing is really quite remarkable and special, and his endurance and strength are really admirable. I’ve always wanted to hear more about his recovery from addiction, I feel like that’s something really incredible and inspirational, but I also understand it’s very personal, too. Though he and Barbara have spoken in bits and pieces about it.
He’s very honest and a great story teller, and he obviously was a vital part of the group and a creative force that is terribly underrated. I think some writers have acknowledged that he was a soothing influence over the more...intense... other members of the band, and they all valued and appreciated him - but you don’t really hear much about how they respected him beyond those early days when he was the mysterious drummer in the cool pink suit.
This has turned into me just rambling and marvelling at Ringo in general, but I suppose his uncomplicated image makes for less intrigue? Maybe? It’s criminal that he’s underrepresented, but people never appreciate what they have ‘til they lose it, so :/ I like hearing him talk about the other boys, too, and he seemed to have a great understanding and empathy for all of them which only seemed to waver when everything was falling apart.

What are your favorite hero names?
oh man there are so many. I had to limit myself to a top twenty, and even that was rough. anyway so first off, a few runner ups because I couldn’t go without mentioning these:
Vlad King - to be clear, this isn’t actually one of my top hero names. but I’m mentioning it here because back when I was first reading the series, one of the fan scanlations -- either Fallen Angels or Mangastream, I forget which -- had originally translated his hero name as Brad King. which, to be frank, would have been one of the greatest hero names of ALL TIME. you can’t imagine my disappointment when I finally learned the truth. it still haunts me to this day.
Jack Mantis - this is Kamakiri (a.k.a. the guy from class 1-B who can grow knives out of his body)’s hero name. my question is, why the Jack. the mantis part, I get! that’s fairly obvious! but the “Jack” is forever a mystery to me. it just adds this little layer of intrigue.
Mr. Brave - this guy is one of the few good things to come from the Basement arc. don’t get me wrong, he is completely useless. but his name? absolutely legendary. this guy, with his power of ripping his own hair out and turning it into a sword (yes that’s his quirk), an ability that could be easily duplicated or bested by literally any jackass who just went out and bought their own damn sword, really thought to himself, “I am going to be the BEST MCFUCKING HERO THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN. I AM GOING TO NAME MYSELF... MISTER BRAVE.” and they let him, you guys. they let him.
anyway so now for the top twenty!
20. Can’t Stop Twinkling - this isn’t a name so much as it is poetry in three words. I still cannot believe that Aoyama went up to Midnight with a hero name that sounds more like the world’s greatest Dear Abby letter, and she actually let him keep it. I’m not 100% clear on how this all works, but I like to think this means that Aoyama’s fellow heroes have an actual legal obligation to call him this in battle. I don’t think we as a fandom and as a people really take enough time out of our lives to stop and be grateful for Aoyama’s existence.
19. Uravity - it’s a pun!! it’s so cute and I love it!! and it’s such a perfect name in that it just instantly sums up and defines her whole brand, bringing to mind both Ochako the person and Zero Gravity the quirk. honestly she is one of only a few kids whose hero name I never space out on. with a lot of the others I usually have to pause for a sec and be like “wait, what was their name again?” but never Ochako.
18. Present Mic - this would make a really great band name honestly. I just like it. I’m pretty sure Horikoshi was going for “present” as in the verb meaning “to perform”, like in “presentation”, but to tell the truth I always pronounce it like “present” as in “gift” or “the present time”, which doesn’t make any sense at all, but IT’S JUST WHAT MY BRAIN DECIDED TO DO. anyway.
17. Tsukuyomi - I know this name has its origins in Japanese mythology, but to be completely honest I’ve always just associated it with Itachi’s infamous genjutsu attack from Naruto. I just think it’s the gothest thing ever and absolutely perfect for Tokoyami lol.
16. All Might - there’s just something about this name that kind of makes me just want to pump my fists and go “YEAH!!” I really like the use of “might” as a noun rather than “mighty” as an adjective like you see in so many classic superhero names. it’s just so much cooler somehow. this name really does conjure up the image of the strongest guy in the universe.
15. Midnight - honestly I’m almost mad that this wound up being a hero name, because it would have made a perfect villain name. it’s dark and mysterious and sexy. it’s no wonder why Midnight chose it lol. anyway so my girl is a bit kinky, nothing wrong with that, and it’s also a perfect name for someone whose quirk puts other people to sleep. it’s just such spot-on branding, I love it.
14. Ingenium - fun fact, I had no idea what this meant when I first came across it because I don’t speak Latin! apparently it means “genius” or “talent.” which is a very good meaning for a hero name! but honestly the real reason I love it so much is because it’s Iida’s tribute to his brother, and I am just such a sucker for that kind of shit. damn you Iida siblings. quit giving me all these feels.
13. Shouto – yes, seriously. I know a lot of people hate this name, and it’s always getting flak for being bland and uncreative. but I honestly think it’s a perfect name for Shouto. firstly because Shouto himself is very much the opposite of flashy in a lot of ways. he’s not particularly animated or attention-seeking; he is a very calm, sort of still-waters-run-deep person, and I think the lack of a snappy brand name fits that personality. I’m even more delighted that it hasn’t remotely curbed his popularity at all (at this point I think the only kid hero with more in-universe fans out there is Momo, and even then it’s probably a close thing), and I think a big part of that is that people are drawn to his unpretentious nature, especially in comparison to a lot of the other heroes out there. but most of all, I like the name because of the simple yet powerful way it serves as a declaration that he is his own person. he’s not his father, and he’s more than just a Todoroki. he is himself; he is Shouto. anyway so yeah, to me this is a fantastic name with so much depth and meaning.
12. Battle Fist - this is Kendou’s hero name AND IT’S PERFECT. like, holy shit. what should we call the girl who goes around punching bad guys around all day with her giant hands. how about BATTLE FIST. there really isn’t much more to say about this one, honestly. its greatness speaks for itself.
11. Vantablack - imagine being such an enormous douchebag that word of your douchey exploits made it all the way over to some guy in Japan who spends 95% of his waking hours writing a manga and has almost no free time. fun fact, although Anish Kapoor is the only one licensed to use the color Vantablack, the name Vantablack is still owned by Surrey NanoSystems (a.k.a. the guys who actually invented it), and so I’m pretty sure they’re the ones who decide whether or not someone else gets to use it. I wonder if Kapoor is pissed about his color being referenced in a popular shounen manga. anyways, all of that speculation aside, it really is the perfect name for someone with Kuroiro’s quirk.
10. Endeavor - look, say what you will about Endeavor the person (although I’m personally a big fan of the way his redemption arc is being done and think he’s a fascinating character, albeit a very flawed one), but there’s no denying that Endeavor is a badass name. but what’s really great about it is how it so perfectly captures the admirable part of Endeavor, the one thing about him that’s actually worth praising. he never gives up. he’s always pushing, striving, struggling forward no matter how hopeless it seems. and that’s a worthy trait, and it says something about him that this is what he chose for his hero name. a name that has nothing to do with fire, nothing to do with his quirk, nothing even to do with his goal of becoming #1. it’s simply a name that means to make an effort; to try and achieve something. and I like that.
9. Sugarman - this IMO is easily the most overlooked and severely underrated hero name in the series. it’s a hidden gem. everyone always forgets about Satou just because his power of being a Strong Punching Guy doesn’t particularly stand out in a manga chock full of strong punching guys. but he is a badass and a great character, and honestly “eating candy makes me super strong” is possibly the single greatest quirk in the history of time and I am jealous. anyway, so this is a really straightforward name, but it’s really smooth and catchy somehow and so it’s one of my favorites.
8. Gale Force - this is Inasa’s hero name! it’s another one which is criminally underrated, much like Inasa himself. airbender powers are just so badass you guys. wind is so badass. this name is all hurricaney and tempesty and super cool and powerful-sounding. this is one of those names that I’m honestly surprised wasn’t already a mainstream superhero name. Marvel was all “nah, we’ll just go with ‘Storm’”, like come on you guys where is the creativity.
7. Red Riot - this name is a fucking grand slam. it’s alliterative! it’s catchy! it’s got the word “riot” in it! it’s an absolutely perfect name for a passionate guy whose quirk lends itself towards good old fashioned brawlin’ and head bashing. the fact that it’s got additional meaning as a tribute towards Kiri’s own personal hero is just the icing on the cake. this is another name that Marvel probably legit wishes they had thought of first. it’s easily the best hero name out of everyone in class 1-A imo.
6. Sir Nighteye - hilariously for the longest time it was not confirmed whether or not Nighteye actually had a real name (he does! but I’ve forgotten it lol), and so there was this lingering question, absurd as it was, of whether or not Nighteye’s parents, whoever they are, were descendants of some proud Nighteye clan, and whether they had really, actually named their child “Sir.” anyways though, I love this name. it’s super cool and mysterious and perfect for someone with future-seeing powers, and the “Sir” just makes even awesomer because it implies that the Queen really liked him or something.
5. Mt. Lady - this name is a stroke of genius. supersize-me powers are a dime a dozen, but the characters always have names like Giant Man or Giganta or Goliath. as far as I know, no other superhero characters have ever thought to name themselves after mountains, let alone to name themselves as if they WERE a mountain. like, she isn’t “mountain lady”; she’s “MOUNT Lady”, as if she were an actual tectonic peak. it really bothers me that I can’t adequately describe in words why I love this so much. I just do!! I think she should get an award.
4. Suneater - Tamaki is out here proving to everyone that your hero name doesn’t need to have jack shit fuckall to do with your actual quirk in order to be completely badass and iconic. sometimes I wonder what Tamaki does when people ask him “out of curiosity, why did you pick that name?”, which someone surely must have done at some point. he probably turns beet red and tries to dissolve into the background. but anyway, the general public does not need to know the meaning of his hero name in order for it to have meaning; we know what the meaning is, and that it’s his way of saying “I believe in myself because my friend believes in me”, and honestly that’s all that matters. I am still of the opinion that certain other people whose childhood friends held a lot of unwavering belief in and admiration towards them could do worse than going down this same hero name route, but we will see! anyways Suneater deserves all your respect.
3. Best Jeanist - I had so much love for this name from the start, and then I found out it was a real, actual award. for people who make good jeans, or are good at wearing jeans, or something. it’s run by the Japan Jeans Council, which is also a real and actual thing. but anyway, despite it not being as wholly original of a name as I thought, it’s still iconic, and I love that he went with something that was recognizable while still fitting his quirk, and which has the added implication that he is the motherfucking best, because he is. also, given that he probably chose this name while he was still in school, and that only public figures generally seem to be eligible for the award, this implies that he chose the name Best Jeanist first, and then went on to win the actual award eight years running. presumably because the JJC got very flustered and were all, “IT’S LITERALLY HIS NAME... WE HAVE TO GIVE IT TO HIM... WE HAVE TO”, and so they did. anyway so that was a goddamn power move on his part.
2. Gang Orca - first of all, if you are an orca man, then naming yourself after orcas is a pretty apt thing to do and I have to respect that. but then along comes the “gang” part, out of absolutely NOWHERE, and it absolutely SMASHES. like, this name comes up to you and it slaps you in the face. GANG ORCA. HE’S A BIG AGGRESSIVE DOLPHIN MAN AND HE’S NOT HERE TO FUCK AROUND. IS HE ACTUALLY IN A GANG?? WE DON’T KNOW. BUT HERE HE IS, READY TO YEET YOUR DELINQUENTS AND HUNT YOUR MOTHERFUCKING SEALS. this name fucks so hard it came within inches of the number one spot. he is a ruffian and a champ.
1. Eraserhead - last but not least, the guy who DIDN’T EVEN PICK HIS OWN NAME. his best friend had to do it for him, and out of love, came up with the SINGLE BEST HERO ALIAS IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND. first of all, this name sounds like a very funky and electronicy Thom Yorke song. second, it conjures up the image of a man with a big no. 2 pencil head, which could not possibly be further from the truth. it’s just so whiplashy in the best way possible. third, the very existence of this name is seriously a goddamn miracle. he could have been “Power-Stopping Man.” or “Sleeping Bag Man.” or “Scruffy Hero: Tired Man.” or just “Shouta”, but unlike Shouto there wouldn’t have been any actual meaning to it; it would have simply been a case of him not giving the slightest of fucks about coming up with a real name. but rather than any of these, thanks to the power of friendship we were blessed with the greatest hero name in recorded memory. this is one of the few kindnesses fate has ever bestowed upon Aizawa Shouta in his tragic, exhausting life, and I for one am eternally grateful.
anyway so that’s my list! sorry if I left out anyone’s favorites! but I think all of these are deserving of love. also if you want to see the single best thing Japan has ever come up with, please go visit best-jeans.com. they even have an instagram lulz.

My personal subjective best / most listened albums this year.
I don’t usually do this, but I loved these albums so much they need their own little list. No order of course.
Tumblr media
Health - DISCO4 PART I - Health are probably my favorite band, even though this is a compilation of mostly released songs it still deserves a spot, where else are you gonna find Full of hell on the same album as JPEGMAFIA and 100 Gecs
Tumblr media
Haapoja - Mullan Keskelta - Hands down the best black metal album last year, I didn’t see this one in any top list so I’m gonna say it’s a criminally underrated album. Every song goes hard! It sounds almost like a mix of Vordr and Deathspell Omega.
Tumblr media
Spanish Love Songs- Brave Faces Everyone - This is probably the biggest surprise for me, this is a genre I absolutely do not listen and never found that interesting. Even when I first heard the album it didn’t feel like anything special, but for some reason I kept coming back to it. Before long I was singing along the songs and really feeling the lyrics. It’s catchy, honest and with lyrics that most people today can relate to, at least on some level.
Tumblr media
Leeched - To Dull the Blades of Your Abuse - this was hard to choose considering some truly incredible releases in the spectrum of heavy and intense guitar based music (see WVRM, Primitive Man, Mattachine, Resin Tomb...). I just listened this one the most, it goes hard from start to finish, the fast parts rip just as much as the slow ones.
Tumblr media
Vladislav Delay - Rakka - I haven’t listened to VD in a long time, I check out his releases every now and then but he never hit the same spot for me as his Chain Records debut Multila...until Rakka! Truly an outstanding release, it feels organic, atmospheric and aggressive all at the same time. Incomparable to anything in electronics, VD truly hit the mark with this release!
Tumblr media
Protomartyr - Ultimate Success Today - Protomartyrs previous album, Relatives In Descent, is in my opinion probably one of the best post-punk albums of all time. They haven’t really topped it with Ultime success, but it’s still an incredible album. It’s constantly in rotation, and I haven’t seen it in best of lists which is unfortunate. So if you missed it, please go listen to it!

Shitpost art of a band I love, cuz I can. Chris Freeman (left) and Jon Ginoli from Pansy Division (circa the early 90s when it was just Jon, Chris and the drummer of the week) in Pop Team Epic Style because this has been sitting around in my absurdist-humored head for a while now. And I admire these guys a lot.
I'll be honest, a lot of their earlier work can get too lewd for my liking (mind you, an asexual lady like me isn't the target audience). And while those particular songs aren't my cup of tea, I really respect the balls it took for these dudes to be as overtly gay and in your face as they were. They became the change they wanted to see in rock music, and that's really admirable. I'm glad they gave gay dudes rock music they could relate to and all that. And proving that gay men can make kickass rock music!!!! Personally, I prefer a lot of their later work, especially the stuff on their best album Absurd Pop Song Romance;  10/10 an underrated gem. (I plan to review it one day. I highly recommend giving it a listen!!!)
I love and admire this band a lot. And it's a damn shame that they're so criminally underrated they are. If you're a dude who's into dudes and you love rock music, definitely check these dudes out!! Or if you like queercore/LGBT+ friendly music (just be warned, a lot of their songs - especially their early content - can get X-rated, so look up the lyrics at your own risk). Sometimes they're humorously homoerotic, sometimes they're deep and introspective. They rock!!
When I first bought my bass, I DM'd the band's Facebook page for advice, and they actually responded!! It was a total "senpai noticed me" moment. sta.sh/21x761anl6l
I actually got to geek out over Jon Ginoli at the Lookout Zoomout virtual concert that happened back in January. I told him how I admired him, how he influenced me, and how I loved Absurd Pop Song Romance. It was surreal and definitely the highlight of my year so far. I just wish I'd taken a screenshot of the moment. :,)
Maybe someday, whenever this Covid shit dies down, I can see them in concert and snap a pic with them at their merch stand. -adds to my bucket list-

Eurovision reviews: Semi 2
These reviews are based on my personal opinions about the songs, and not their potential in the actual competition. Qualification predictions are coming up in a separate post.
San Marino: Senhit ft Flo Rida - Adrenalina
After a decade of giving us nothing but memes, San Marino have finally decided to get competitive for real, giving us possibly the biggest Eurovision meme of all time by featuring some rapper called Florida Man in their song. Let's be honest, Flo Rida isn't nearly as big as he was a decade ago, but he's still the most relevant global celebrity to show up to Eurovision for a really long time. I know fans are upset that an American is showing up to Eurovision with a song that he very obviously doesn't care about, but I disagree! San Marino has what, 50 inhabitants? A country that small has every right to recruit some help from abroad. This is a banger and a huge meme, what else could you possibly want?
9/10
Estonia: Uku Suviste - The Lucky One
Between this song and the song from last year, I'm starting to think that this Uku Suviste guy might be the most boring man on the planet.
2/10
Czech Republic: Benny Cristo - Omaga
Listen, I think this song is criminally underrated by the fandom, but from what I've seen so far the live vocals are rough. I'm obsessed with the official music video where Benny recreates Leonardo Dicaprio's iconic car door moment from The Wolf of Wall street, but I don't think the live performance will be anywhere near as great as the video.
7/10
Greece: Stefania - Last Dance
I think this song is trying way too hard. It's too fast and there's too many high notes, I'm getting exhausted just listening to it. The staging is looking stupid as fuck, which is fun. Whoever decided that Stefania should be surrounded by dismembered dancing gym shorts should win the Nobel peace prize.
6/10
Austria: Vincent Bueno - Amen
This is even more boring than the last song called Amen, which is remarkable.
2/10
Poland: RAFAŁ - The Ride
There's definitely a good song hiding in here somewhere, but honestly, it needed another singer. This geriatric boybander unironically wearing sunglasses indoors isn't doing it for me.
4/10
Moldova: Natalia Gordienko - SUGAR
The fact that we're not getting any cake-related murder on stage is a real letdown. I was expecting a fun mess on stage, but it looks like we're just getting a boring mess.
3/10
Iceland: Daði og Gagnamagnið - 10 Years
This band has the worst luck in the world. I think this song is great, but it's obviously weaker than Think about things, which was the kind of perfection that can't ever be recreated. The staging is looking fantastic, but I'm just so sad that they can't perform it live.
If Dadi should return for a third attempt at Eurovision, I fully expect a volcano eruption to prevent him from attending the contest.
8/10
Serbia: Hurricane - Loco Loco
I honestly find this song really forgettable, but at least these girls have a really great stage presence. I feel like I should have something interesting to say here but I can't come up with anything at all. It's probably a fan favorite for a reason but I'm just not having any feelings about this at all, positive or negative.
6/10
Georgia: Tornike Kipiani - You
After watching thousands of Eurovision rankings and recaps on youtube, I still can't remember a single note of this song. I really wish he would bring back the weird screaming about random nationalities from last year, because at least that was fun.
2/10
Albania: Anxhela Peristeri - Karma
I really feel like we have gotten this exact song from Albania 500 times in the last 10 years.
3/10
Portugal: The Black Mamba - Love Is On My Side
I'm conflicted because on one hand I really enjoy this genre of music, but on the other hand this just feels like an album track.
4/10
Bulgaria: VICTORIA - Growing Up Is Getting Old
Victoria is basically just a Billie Eilish impersonator, but like a really expensive impersonator. This song might have the best staging of the year, and the song sounds fantastic, even if it's obviously very derivative.
8/10
Finland: Blind Channel - Dark Side
The year is 2008, I'm in 8th grade, me and my gang of nerds and emos are in recess listening to this song off someone's crappy flip phone. This is retro as fuck and I'm weirdly fascinated by the fact that the guys singing this are the same age as me and making this middle school throwback kind of music. Saatana perkele \m/
10/10
Latvia: Samanta Tīna - The Moon Is Rising
I mean, she's trying really, really hard to make something, but I have no idea what it is that she's trying to make. The whole "blood moon is rising" lyric really makes me think it's some kind of feminist statement about periods.
4/10
Switzerland: Gjon's Tears - Tout l'Univers
Super unpopular opinion but I absolutely love the staging where Gjon dances like a pretentious art school weirdo. I am reminded of Loic Nottet, and that's pretty music the highest compliment I could give any eurovision contestant.
9/10
Denmark: Fyr Og Flamme - Øve Os På Hinanden
I can't decide if this is endearing or repulsive. It's exactly like a Swedish, or I guess Danish dansband song from circa 1983 and I cannot for the life of me understand how this song ended up here. The danish language is the funniest shit in the world so it gets huge bonus points for making Europe endure 3 full minutes of guttural caveman noises.
7?/10
