Onto 0-3!

The first thing I wonder when I start reading this chapter is… why does Saiki repeat himself every chapter? Just to drill it in? I guess this was a serialized manga.

And he includes the same nose joke again… except it isn’t as funny as the original. (“If that applies to you, then please just forget about this conversation” had me in hysterics the first time I read it.)

Unrelated to anything in particular, I like the large screen tone used on Saiki’s eyes in vol 0. It’s visually interesting. I think Asou sensei could have kept using this to indicate when Saiki was using his powers.

Here we go! Actually important details to the saikiverse (if you will.) One second of staring at a target is enough to get a glance, but three seconds of staring removes clothing and five seconds removes muscles as well as skin (maybe four seconds removes just skin, revealing muscle.)

No guarantee of how true this is, but I like to think it’s more or less accurate, thinking forward to the Kusuo’s birthday challenge chapter, where he has to spend a lot of time staring at an object so that he can see through it.

I had forgotten that Chuono makes his first appearance in this chapter. Yay! Chuono san is so cute.

“At moments like these, what sort of face should I be making?” is another iconic Saiki quote. This gag still manages to be pretty funny in its rough form, imo. *Now* what sort of face does one make?? The kind of face Chuono is making, perhaps. I just love the idea of Saiki meeting an illusionist in the first place. The fake “magician” versus the real psychic who can alter the laws of reality. It’s one of the genius bits in Saiki k.

I also love the intentional misunderstanding that Saiki is an illusionist. It leads to so many funny situations down the line. Why does this random middle aged man call Saiki “master”? Who knows. In this case, Saiki’s habit of letting people make assumptions really came back to bite him in the ass. (Well, that and trying to out-magic and discourage him.)

Another detail I like: Saiki missing social cues (in this case, the dip in the conversation where an average stranger would be like, ok, see you, good luck. That’s not very neurotypical of him…

I really do find this weird stunt hilarious. Saiki’s logic is so off because he inevitably ends up dealing with weirdos expecting normal behavior. C’mon Saiki.

Also, Saiki says here that he can teleport (called apport in the comic proper I believe) not just things, but people into a specific place… crazy

Saiki doesn’t understand the (reasoning behind the) eyelash/long hair simile? Continuing to build my ND Saiki case material…

Also enjoying this little panel of Ike-san holding the 500 yen coin, which Saiki definitely gave him.

Well, I think that does it for volume 0 Chapter 3….

a/n: ive been trying to find a good idea for this fic since last year and here we are finally more than one year later getting it out of my drafts. hope you enjoy. (:

I.

You and Mat were going to go out tonight. The New York Islanders were hosting an event where everybody had to put on their best outfits and attitudes for the night. You and Mathew had gone shopping earlier in the week and as you stood in front of your mirror taking in your appearance you couldn't help but feel a bit insecure. You decided on getting a dress that was a bit out of your comfort zone just to try new things except now you couldn't help but feel a bit silly at how you felt even though you had chosen the dress in the first place.

Mat came into the room and fixed his tie. Taking in as you looked at yourself in the mirror, wrapping your arms around your waist. “Well don’t you look beautiful.” he said as he placed a soft kiss under your ear.

“Really, it's not too much.” You said as you took in your appearance once again, with a small smile on your face from the compliment your boyfriend had given you.

“Oh baby, you can never be too much.” He said as he wrapped his fingers in yours. “Ok now come on, do a little spin for me, so i can enjoy all of the outfit.” he said. You felt a bit silly spinning in front of the mirror like you were some princess but as you saw the smile on Mat’s face you couldn't help but feel your heart warm up, glad that you had him there to make you feel like one.

II.

Both you and Mat were currently in your apartment. You doing some stuff around the apartment while Mat talked to Tito on the phone. “No dude you don’t understand, we’ve literally been together for three years and I still feel like i did when we were on our first date. She literally makes me so nervous, like I'm going to mess something up and fumble.” Mat said as he talked to his best friend. You overheard his words as you were cleaning your guys room.

“No literally I don’t understand how I got so lucky.” He kept on talking to Tito. Your heart warming at the gesture. No you were definitely the lucky one in this situation.

III.

Guys camera rolls could be a weird thing to venture. But after he got a girlfriend most of those photos in his gallery consisted of you. So after you and Mat had been dating for three years he was bound to have quite a lot of photos of the two of you.

You and Mat had just gone on a trip during the weekend and you wanted to see the pictures he took, to see if any were worth saving to your phone. Except as you went to his albums your eyes laid upon a photo album with over 300 photos. As you scrolled through the album you realized that most of the photos were of you or of you two. A small smile laying on your face as you looked at all the photos. Some of them of you two dressed up for an event, you in his jersey, of you hanging out with your guys friends, and some dating back to the very first months of you guys dating. As you scrolled through all the photos you looked at Mat in the kitchen, your stomach feeling all warm and fuzzy.

“What's up?” he said as he noticed you looking at him.

“Nothing, I just love you.” You replied back.

IV.

You had a stressful day. Just an overload of work. So as you called Mat on your lunch break to vent to him he knew that he wanted to make you feel better when you got home.

He had decided on dinner, now Mat wasn't the best cook, Tito cooking for him when they lived together. But he knew a thing or two about preparing a meal. One one of your first few dates you guys had gone to this small restaurant/bistro in downtown manhattan which had sadly closed down so Mat was going to recreate the meal you two shared.

After much research and preparation (him telling himself that he could actually do it and he couldn't mess this up for you) he had finally gotten what seemed like a good enough replica of the meal you two shared. So now as he prepared the table he waited for you to get home.

As soon as you got home Mat covered your eyes. “Just trust me.” he said as he took your hand and pulled your chair out. “Ok, keep your eyes closed,” he said as sat down.

“Okay now open them,” he said. Your eyes adjusting to the lights of the apartment and the view in front of you. There Mat sat with a soft smile on his face. And then that's when you took in the dish in front of you.

“Wait, is this what we had for our fifth date, from that restaurant that closed down.” You said, smiling up at your boyfriend.

“Yeah it is, well at least my version of it. I know you're stressed so I wanted to do something nice for you.” He said as he intertwined his fingers with yours across the table.

“Aww baby thank you, I love it, I love you.” You said, sort of tearing up at the gesture, of how he could even remember the small detail that happened so long ago.

Here both of you sat in the dark bar after celebrating the boys’ win. You had already had a couple of drinks, well more than a couple. Mat opted to stick with water since he was going to drive you guys home.

“You know what, you are so pretty. Like how are you even real. Mr. Prince charming over here, am i right. How are you even real, how are we even dating? I'm a lucky gal. Someone pinch me” You said as you looked over at your boyfriend.

“Ok maybe that's enough of the drinks for you.” Matt said as he took the drink in front of you away from you.

“Aww why, you party pooper. I'm only letting you cause you are so darn cute. Can I kiss you? Wait, maybe we can go back home and have some fun.” You said, clearly the alcohol not holding you back.

“Maybe another time, ok,we should get you home so you, pretty lady can get some sleep.” Mat said as he waved goodbye to his friends and exited the bar. Here right now as you told him all these silly things he couldn't help but feel his heart warm up at your words. No matter how long you two had been dating for you guys always made each other feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

to you, it's a shitty sentence. to some random bitch 500 miles away, it's a fire line that'll haunt them for the next 17 years.

you don't know how impactful your writing is because it's been in your brain for far too long now. you've stared at it for hours and repeated "this sucks" over and over again to the point that you killed your capacity to feel anything about your work.

but trust me, once you get your shit out there, someone's gonna go over that paragraph you hate and go "jesus fucking christ" and put the book down to have an existential crisis.
