EEEK! I AM SO SORRY!!! this took a while 2 answer cuz i wrote a whole frickin ESSAY! i guess thats what happens when u ask tumblr user klavery 2 talk about klavery, lol.... ANYWAYS,

ok ok omg... firstly i want 2 warn that i clearly take them wayy too seriously and romanticize the fuck out of them and its rly embarrassing bcuz they are stupid but i am just too gone 4 them at this point so 😊👍

SO LIKE!!! avery being aspec + autistic in my minds eye affects pretty much everything abt their relationship 2 romance & dating & stuff... so that & the fact theyre like a dorky awkward nerd to me makes them pretty passive & nervous abt romance stuff, at least at first! avery seems like they could b the suave confident type when it comes 2 romance, which is the kind of person i think their character develops into once they get the hang of it (still a silly dork tho OF COURSE). that being said, in the beginning, avery wasnt usually the one to initiate things often! klara was his first everything... his first crush, his first kiss, everything like that (as opposed to klaras like, 20 exes, lol) so he was kind of inexperienced XP

the development of their relationship is like... at first they HATED each other, they found each other so ANNOYING and INSUFFERABLE, naturally... until a little problem in the form of a 13 year old child showed up at the dojo. apparently this kid was enough of a mutual threat to get the two of them to tolerate each other enough to reluctantly team up... also can i say they r literally like cartoon antagonists to me? they are SO funny and dumb i am SO obsessed... anyways! after the whole main plot of the isle of armor is over, they still kinda almost, try 2 awkwardly ignore each other? tsunderes... they cant admit theyre growing fond of each other xP and after a while, that strategy just doesnt work out :p they continue 2 train at the dojo, and this soon leads 2 them becoming friends! this part is integral 2 me 4 the development of their relationship, they become total besties, they r such galpals........

after some indeterminate amount of time after becoming friends, avery finally falls for her. i headcanon klara was always attracted to him, even when she hated him, lol. they were like two freaks who were perfect partners in crime. they get really close and affectionate, even platonically ❤ ... u can tell how crazy i am over enemies to friends to lovers for them xP

so with ALL THAT in mind.... i think klara would ask first? technically? i mean klara would b the kind of person 2 want someone 2 confess their undying love 4 her, but avery was kindaa weird. i dont think they would have EVER asked her directly tbh.... they were soo confused abt their feelings hehe, abt her but also abt dating in general. klara kinda knew abt the latter, considering avery would have opened up 2 her abt it in my brainspace. i guess knowing this she would just shoot her shot & suggest that they could date! avery is so nervous.... he panics and says he needs time 2 think on it, and when he finally recomposes himself hes all like, Ahem, Klara, I Would Like To Formally Accept Your Ever So Gracious Invitation.. hehehe.... he was so funny.

UM so they try dating!! and i dont rly care if it isnt realistic or believable or whatever at all i just like cute indulgent things.

so what do they do!?! WELL, i think a particular Official artwork could answer that..

OH! wanna know what i think would b cute?? THIS IS SO CRINGE but basically i hc that they have rooms at the dojo 4 the students (so they dont have 2 sleep in tents or go home everyday or whatever...) and i think it would b SO cute if honey and/or mustard helped avery set up a lil candlelit dinner date in his room~ its so silly but so sweet❤

hmm.. honestly i really like the idea of their first kiss being kinda like, lowkey. juxtaposed to the kind of people they are. one might expect some kind of grandiose fairytale type situation... when in fact they were just chillin alone somewhere on the island, and she asked 2 kiss them... and they agreed! it left avery asking themself, what am i doing? how did i get here?? everything had been so different. this definitely wasnt what they would have imagined for themself... but they loved it. averys life was changing in unexpected ways. i guess this was first-love making him a little cuckoo in the head, huh? maybe this event had been a bit grandiose, in its own way.

WOW this post really devolved into me writing fanfiction about how kissing klara caused existential revelations within avery. nice! ok!

anyways!!! we r almost at the end! so!! avery was so touch starved, omg. he wouldnt let just anyone touch him, tho, of course. but if he liked you, well... earlier i said i believed they were pretty close b4 they dated, so if klara were to grab their hand, they wouldnt object, hehe~ (shes the one w the cold hands btw, and a firm grip, too..). things abt avery & physical touch interest me so much honestly, it is so intriguing when a character who could use psychic powers 4 everything would decide not to... especially when it comes 2 affection....

avery lore.... im still pretty bad at thinking of things 2 mention unless asked direct questions but here are some extremely mundane things:

she can drive but she doesnt have a car. thats really boring. uh. lore. avery facts. all of her cutlery is silver, all her knives are silver, pretty much anything metal she owns is silver, same goes for her entire family so interacting with them, ever is gonna be a pain. (avery adopts gloves pretty quickly 2 be able to touch silver. and not get got by it (scarlet also does this quite often, u can see her wearing gloves in her introduction)) she doesnt have her ears pierced and now cant, because itd close up / reject immediately. (doesnt have them pierced bc she was always nervous about people ripping them out but more importantly just wouldnt be interested in wearing earrings) these are all really mundane facts. alive she was pretty neurotic about staying healthy (not bc she cares abt it for the sake of her wellbeing just parental influence 2 b perfect form 4 vampire murder always as long as possible) but she drinks a little more than she'd like to admit. (alcohol, not blood, though she drinks more blood than she'd like to admit, too. I guess. which isnt very much) is a little insecure about her nose crinkle when its pointed out but doesnt think about it outside of that. wears tall shoes so she can feel taller 2 the detriment of her ankles. works out exclusively from home refuses to do so in public spaces. she doesnt have much basic knowledge of subjects outside of tha supernatural... shes a little out of touch with non vampire hunter life, forgets most people actually dont think about vampires very much. after being forced to watch tv or movies she wont admit whether or not she likes something until the person she watched it with shares their opinion and she will lie accordingly (otherwise embarrassed) likes to be taken care of but wont let anyone take care of her becasue as you can see, shes LIKE THAT. modern day 2023 despite being much less pathetic, avery still tosses and turns all night (day) and scarlet has to put some weird asmr roleplay you're a worm and im making you a terrarium to thrive in (whispered) 3+ hour long youtube video in front of her to get any sleep. scarlet would totally make asmr actually. she'd make you're a wooden spork that i'm carving (DIY asmr, soft spoken). averys favourite blood type is A, not bc a for avery just because it tastes better to her. she doesnt know that in canon though. shes very intense about taking agnes to the vet whenever she does anything weird, shes always fine though and avery just gets got with vet bills. she found her in the bin. bin cat. meow. did i say that before? i think mightve sorry if that isnt fresh lore. avery & scarlet miss being warm it rly sucks being cold all the time. like. obviously. but like damn. that must suck, I hate being cold.

anyway I could go on.

the claws r naturally black but tbh she should paint them different colours 2 cope with the despair. theyre so inconvenient. she needs some kinda positive association with them. she has to custom order gloves to cover them up, cant just buy normal gloves bc the claws just. go through. they need to have a little point for her claws like little finger scabbards (she doesnt have claws on her feet but her toenails r also black 2 match. no reason other than i think itd look weird if they didnt. no intention of drawing her without socks on though so it doesnt matter-thats some lore.... other lore, the discoloured hands (like the greyness in some drawings i've posted) is a thing on its own aside from the claws, and does go away, but the claws are permanent. i think i said that though.

alright personal post time related to the last post i reblogged

soooo i’m a system! i’ve known this for quite some time now (since the beginning of the pandemic actually) but haven’t been able to be super open about it for a LOT of reasons. however we’ve become more comfortable talking about it and i’ve decided to open up about it on here bc this is something that is a (obviously) big part of our life and there are very few places where we can be open about it and this is one of those places where we can be a bit more vulnerable. 

i just reblogged a post that goes into more detail about plurality itself, aka multiplicity, being a system, etc. which essentially just means multiple people sharing a body. specifically we have a form of OSDD, which is a dissociative disorder, but not the only way to be plural (and tbh i think we might be plural even without the OSDD we’re not 100% sure) plurality is a HUGE range of experiences and no two systems are fully alike, i kinda see it like neurodivergence where it’s just like... a form of existence that’s relatively normal just not talked about much

unfortunately, there’s also a very high population of gross sysmeds on tumblr (a big reason why I kept this part of my identity hidden for awhile) so if you, my follower reading this, are one of them, pls just block and move on i’d rather not argue our existence with you thanks byeeee (sysmeds or system medicalists basically believe that systems have to exist in a certain way to be “valid” or real, like having a certain amount of Trauma(tm) or being diagnosed with a specific kind of disorder, or having X symptom, etc. which is not true)

BUT ANYWAY as for what that means for us and our blog, here are some things about our system we’d like you all to know:

- we don’t REALLY have a system name (we kinda go by Rain but that’s still a placeholder) but will answer to whatever. Win works for all of us as well. Percy, myself (the one writing this) am the person you probably already know, and am pretty much always fronting at any given time, so you can assume that i’m here most of the time.

- i use i/me pronouns a lot too bc it’s easier and more comfortable, especially since i’m basically always around. sometimes we mean it in a collective sense (which yes i know is not grammatically correct but whatever we can do what we want)

- most of our system members are, as you might have already guessed, introjects of my OCs. any OC that I’ve spent any amount of time rambling about on here most likely exists as a fully formed person in our system and are the main headmates who I interact with on a daily basis

- we also have some fictives (introjects of fictional characters) of characters that are not OCs but none of them are currently active in our system

- our frequent fronters (headmates that are around a lot or at least often enough that you’ve probably interacted with them at least a bit if we’re friends) include me, Percy, my bestie Avery (fronting a LOT of the time, we’re basically cohosts at this point), Nyx, Kat, Roma, Emma, and Angel! (and more of our characters, but those are the most actively involved in our day to day life)

- feel free to say hi to any of my headmates if you’d like! in fact, we’d all love that!! we’re not very out as plural so it’s nice to have more people see us as who we really are, instead of just as characters who don’t really exist. it also helps us with distinguishing between ourselves bc we get hella blurry sometimes. Just keep in mind that they are not just characters but real actual people with their own thoughts, feelings, likes, dislikes, personalities, etc, and even though you might “know” them from reading things I’ve posted here about them, they don’t necessarily know you (although they might know who you are if we’re friends, especially if i know you irl)

Howabout Star Trek for the ask game

blorbo: Garak. I'm sure I've told this story on tumblr before, but my introduction to Star Trek was "A Stitch in Time" (the Garak novel written by Andy) after a trekkie buddy lent it to me, and I was like, oh, hey, this is pretty good! Every Trek experience has been a bit let-down since then, tbh.

scrunkly: Nog and Jake Sisko are battling it out for this one. See, I would say it is Nog, but then "The Visitor" exists, and few things make me wail like that episode does. I haven't rewatched it since my dad died for a reason.

scrimblo bimblo: SISKO. I am thrilled whenever I see Sisko get love on here, but it is never enough! Hands down, he is the most interesting and compelling captain, and Avery Brooks is a freaking hero for what he brought to the series. The monologue from "In the Pale Moonlight"?? "Far Beyond the Stars" hello???? Everything Brooks did to build the Jake+Sisko relationship, when did your favorite ever, pssht, you wish.

glup shitto: So many great choices, so many great characters I love that would fit this description. Weyoun 6? Leeta? Let's not forget Mr. Continuum himself, Q. T'Pring? Data and Geordi, together or separately, jeez. Oh my goodness, GRILKA? Kasidy, my fun and funny, compellingly complex, and hot Marquis-sympathizing captain. But no, alas. tbh i don't have that much to say about slyvan, but i think his design is so cool?? a goat beastman!! a goat boy, if you will. i think it's interesting that he ended up being a pomefiore student? i mean, that's to be expected because he's good at making herbal medicine and potions, but still, his energy is so different from most pomefiore students, i wonder what his dynamic with them is like. also him giving people crystal-themed nicknames? amazing. as someone who likes crystals a lot and collects them, i love that idea a lot fhjksdkd. still can't get over avery being called "rose quartz".. so cute.. i also wonder why he doesn't like fishing? does he find it too boring? overall, a very good boy, would love to try baking an apple pie for him. i can't bake though

okay, as someone who thinks that their gender identity is most similar to being a demigirl, i like the fact that irene is a demigirl a lot dhjdkslsk as i said before, i really love their unique magic! i think it's cool and again, i like that the consent is needed before irene can actually communicate telepathically with someone. it's pretty refreshing, considering that usually telepathy just.. happens. someone just reads your mind and that's it. i also feel like irene is hiding something? a secret, perhaps? that's just the vibe i'm getting. but maybe she's just like that and she naturally has that ~mysterious vibe~ so yeah, i like her a lot! i would love to know more about her!

listen. the moment i see a cute blonde girl who's very outgoing and energetic, that's it. she's going to my faves list. i don't make the rules. IT JUST HAPPENS I CAN'T CONTROL IT. i think iris is a very interesting character and i feel like there's more to her than just her fun-loving personality i mean. "when dawn comes" exists i like her design a lot, i think she's really pretty.. also her talent is improvisng sea shanties? how fun is that? i'd also love to know more about her unique magic, i feel like it has a lot of potential? like, huh.. a girl like iris being able to learn other people's desires.. for some reason, i'm getting some angsty vibes from this.. and her hobby being painting is a nice detail, i think it shows that iris has a calmer side and i think it's neat :)

what are the RO body types like

now, i'll start by saying that a lot of the ROs don't really have explicit descriptions of their physique ~in text~ because idk my physical descriptions are pretty sparse and i just didn't think it was the most interesting thing about them/the most important thing to convey in the brief time we've seen them all for so far. 

that generally leads to people assuming that they're skinny for f!ROs and like dorito shaped for m!ROs and tbh i think the assumption that a character must be skinny unless explicitly stated otherwise says a lot about how we collectively consume media and what we think about people with body types that don’t meet the societal “ideal”. idk man there’s just something to be said about skinny being the default i’m just not articulate enough to do the saying. 

(also soz editing to add this but, like everything in a WIP that’s only 3 chapters in, details about the characters will probably become clearer over time so if you’re waiting to see stuff referenced in text then it probably will be! just not as a big infodump the first time you meet them haha)

anyway, soz, i'll actually answer your question:

adegoke: pretty beefy, but well toned. adegoke's pretty into exercise so probably has the most Intentional physique. has the most cake after florrie, could definitely bounce a coin off his ass.

arthur: a very lanky build. he’s stronger than you’d probs expect but yeah he’s v slim has to get all his clothes tailored etc and is just very like. straight up straight down. 

atticus: very broad - kind of a big rugby player kinda build but one of the big guys at the back not the little ones that do all the running about?? strong and muscular, but not super toned. v barrel-chested. 

avery: tall and lean, very willowy. always wears heels because she does not give a fuck about being taller than the lads and if they are bothered then they can shove it. 

charlie: absolutely just Some Guy hahaha. he absolutely does not exercise or anything so he has no muscle tone to speak of lmao - very 2007 indie band guy aesthetic if that means anything to anyone?? 

ellis: slim and slender, naturally very slim. kind of emphasised by the way they hold themself - v statuesque and careful, partly due to the fact that they’re often in pain and don’t want it to be obvious. 

florrie: chubby cutie! florrie's like 5'1" so she's weeny but curvy, ~voluptuous~ i guess? i always picture her as like a fat girl with a kind of natural hourglass silhouette. definitely has most cake.

griff: i guess best described as an athletic build? he’s not huge and broad but he just has that kind of toned physique from constantly Being Active. definitely the closest to being dorito shaped, has rippling abs etc hahaha 

imogen: very slight, almost scrawny? imogen’s quite tall so she probably comes closest to like a 00s model aesthetic. 

nyra: nyra is petite in the sense that she is short and slim, but has quite a muscular build? she’s really into judo (as you will know if you get thrown in ch1 lmaooo) and has quite square shoulders, toned limbs etc. 

rowan: naturally slim, had her boobs done in her early 20s so she’s quite ~curvy~, a textbook 2020 instabaddie tbh. 

syd: i generally describe them as being like. lithe and wiry? they’re definitely strong and athletic but build more for mobility than like brute strength. trained as a gymnast so that has influenced their physique a lot. 

vinh: spends most of their time building installations etc so they’re actually pretty toned - kind of rectangular? and generally quite an angular person - a lot of sharp joints and lines.

I've been thinking that I'd like Lucia to have some growth where she starts out as a staunch believer in the children, but then as she gets exposed to outsiders (far harbormen, Neva, Hector and Lily and Nick, among others) she starts questioning it and becomes more aware of how toxic and abusive the cult is and decides to leave to get away from it, although I'm having trouble deciding if she'd be more pacifist before and become more ok with violence after leaving, or become more pacifist after leaving. But then I realized that that greatly depends on how Hector handles the far harbor stuff and how much he lets it escalate (and how he solves it, tbh)

I really wish I could give you an in depth play-by-play sort of answer, but I haven’t yet been blessed with inspiration about the perfect ‘Hector’ way to solve the far harbor conundrum. And I’m not sure it would be all that different from the in game solution anyway.

So what I’m basically working with at the moment is pretty close, if not identical to how things happen in game when you choose the ending that sort of keeps DiMA in control of everything. He gets to keep being in charge of Acadia, the Captain Avery replacement continues to be in charge of the Harbor and the people there are none the wiser. Hector sure as hell isn’t happy with DiMA for killing the original Avery because she was outspoken against the Children of Atom, but he can also relate to the need to do bad things in order to keep the peace. And of course, just like with the decision about the nuke, Hector’s not traveling on his own and his companions have opinions about this sort of thing too. So he’s kind of stuck in a similar situation, wanting to keep people happy.

As for the Children of Atom, they now pretty much repeat what DiMA did at the Harbor and replace High Confessor Tektus with a synth. I’m leaning towards him being killed instead of convinced to leave the Island, you know, just so Hector gets to have this one thing. Buuuut there’s also to consider that it most likely falls on Lucia and Neva to do most of the CoA-side of the questline and the fact that they’re probably not happy with the decision to kill Tektus. So either Hector goes to do that himself and makes himself more unpopular with those two Or, after they’ve accepted that Tektus will be replaced whether they like it or not, they want to do some damage control and try to convince Tektus to leave. 

I think for Lucia specifically, the business with Tektus is probably one of the most formative aspects in her character development.  Under Tektus’ leadership, there’s a good possibility that she’d grow more accepting of being fanatical and violent and really start to subscribe to the idea that this is their Island and the Harbormen will get what’s coming to them. Enter Hector and the gang who learn the history of everything with fresh eyes, question Tektus’ motives and uncover more of what the deal was with Martin. Then comes the whole spiel of how there’s only one way to deal with people like Tektus and he’s either killed or narrowly avoids death. I feel like this whole process could help Lucia clear her mind so to speak and gain a new perspective, which was really hard to do for her before because a) she’s in a cult and b) she has a sort of elevated status in that cult that keeps her shielded even more from everything. Maybe Neva also watched Lucia get more fanatical over the years and became concerned and felt like she needed some help coming to her senses. Which in turn makes Neva more inclined to work with Hector, Lily and Nick. Them leaving Far Harbor eventually could also be a sort of escape, allowing Lucia to get a bit of distance from everything and clear her mind.

But this could also go the opposite way, where Lucia has kind of kept to herself in the cult because she was already interested in what Martin had to say, but after he left, Tektus was on an anti-Martin crusade, so Lucia already felt a bit antagonized. She still has her ‘good little angel’ status though, and this cult all she knows, and she doesn’t really want to cause a splash or anything. Hence the pacifist attitude. Again, enter Hector and co. uncovering some things, Lucia can see the light and a way to get the Children of Atom back to being the peaceful group she knew and loved. But then comes the difficult decision of what to do with Tektus. Maybe Lucia and Neva try to convince him to leave but they’re unable to, which leaves them with only one option. Lucia doesn’t like the method but she does like the result and thus maybe grows a bit more accustomed to the idea of using violence.

DALLAS 

he’s had a good 3 years of being in relationship and girl drama and having that just doesn’t...make sense...anymore? like him and zara definitely have things they need to work through but i think he’s found someone he really likes and isn’t even looking into everybody else. 

HOWEVER, now that he’s with her, i think his family’s financial situation will become even more desperate bc they’re bankrupt and the calloway’s are like r i c h. so.... 

- SOMEONE HE’S LOANING A LOT OF $$$ FROM: yes, he makes lots from his singing career but his parents are in huge debt and on top of that, there’s margo’s rehab fees and spending problem. everything dallas has earned since his first album has gone to fixing his family and it just hasn’t happened yet. maybe he reaches out to someone over christmas for a big loan and they give it to him, without realising he has literally no plans on paying them back. if they’re going to be nice about it, i dont want it. i want tension w this.  - DIRTY WORK: he’s obviously been a drug dealer before. i’m happy for him to go down that route but again, anyone who is maybe from a sketchy family, dallas would be happy to do their dirty work for them if the price is right. maybe someone knows his family’s situation and takes advantage of this. again, i rly don’t want people being really nice about it.

BRODY 

he’s obviously, officially a dad now. i don’t think the pressure is getting to him, but the whole idea that this is his life forever definitely is. i’m always on the fence with him because he LOVES disney and nobody comes close. affairs just seem a bit old for him, but he still definitely fucks up now and then and i think i’m going to give him a bit of a partying/being out/spending addiction. sooooooo....

- PEOPLE WHO PARTY/GO OUT WITH HIM: think like, wolf of wallstreet or ‘the man’ music video by taylor swift. i think fake friends would definitely come in to play here - people who know he’s wealthy and take advantage of that to have really good nights out and tempt him to just blow tons of money on shit.  ALSO, people using him for publicity and maybe people who sell stories about the wild nights out he has and how much he fucks up/isn’t a great father figure atm.  - FRIENDS WHO COVER FOR HIM - TAKEN BY LEO: they don’t care enough to get him to fix up, but they definitely act as alibi’s and help him to avoid getting into too much shit with disney.

MASON 

i’m reaaalllly liking the idea of mason maybe not being as perfect as he appears on the surface. i think that has slowly started this year but hasn’t been as dramatic as it possibly COULD be. he also has the whole secret of knowing james is alive and nothing has come of that yet, so these are the two directions i want to take him down. SoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoO......

- ALLEGED MISTRESSES/FLINGS: mason isn’t brody or leo and it is just natural to him to stay loyal and committed to the person he’s with and obviously, he loves kendall. however, i do think he has a lot of unfinished business with exes (we could also develop new ones if they’re not exes already). we could maybe plot about him rebuilding his relationship with them but it gets misinterpreted and it’s made out as if he’s cheating or something when rly it’d be completely innocent. - SOMEONE WHO CATCHES HIM WITH JAMES AT A SECRET LOCATION - TAKEN BY GISELE: i’d love this one more than ^^^^^^^^ tbh! it’s obviously a hUGE secret that james is alive and mason knows his family won’t forgive him for keeping it a secret if he finds out. this could definitely bring out the nastier side of him and i think he’d even go as far as to blackmail somebody or pay to keep them quiet. we can develop it! 

BLAKE

i struggle SO much with blake because he really is unproblematic. he can be a bit of an idiot but he’s not really into drugs, HE’D NEVER CHEAT, HE’S WITH THE LOVE OF HIS ACTUAL LIFE, and he’s pretty honest and kind for the most part. i’ve had a think, though, and i’ve came up with some of these. SOOOOO.... - MUSIC DRAMA: blake loves 5SOS but i also think his unique style of music is so different from the bands and he’s going to try and explore that in 2021. i kind of want him to work with other artists in the industry and lots of different drama could come out of this:  >> tension with the other 5sos boys and maybe fans who start to fuel rumours that he’s leaving when he isn’t  >> rivalries with some of the more established male artists. dallas would be great for this BUT he’s mine lol >> song-writing credits/arguments. maybe he writes with someone and they don’t feel like they’ve been given enough credit for how much they helped him. i’m very reluctant to do anything with blake’s personal life just bc that really isn’t him. AT THE VERY MOST, maybe some ex relationships for him to base his solo songs around.

HENSLEY

MY BABY IS ENGAGED. WHEN I TELL YOU I THINK I SHED A TEAR FOR HER LAST NIGHT, I’M NOT LYING. SHE’S SPENT THIS WHOLE RP PUSHING PEOPLE AWAY JUST TO BE LIKE “I TOLD YOU SO”....BUT !!!!!!! THINGS ARE CHANGING. ok, here are some ideas i have. these will take a little bit more development but still have a lot of potential.  - AN OLD (TOXIC) FRIENDSHIP REVIVING: there was a time like pre-st judes where hensley was quite off the rails. LIKE, she’d go out, get drunk/high, just not go home for days and i think this all came down to losing autumn in such a weird way....maybe she gets closer to that person again, and they’re a pretty bad influence? i feel like this would put a big strain on all of her healthier relationships. she’ll definitely not stay in the toxic place forever but maybe this friend is kinda passive aggressive like: “oh? you’re getting married? that’s very...not you.” and stuff.  maybe they come from a challenging background too and they were each other’s support systems but it wasn’t a healthy relationship. we could build this up!  - ANY OF EVAN’S EXES/FLINGS: LISTEN BECAUSE SHE IS JUST SO CONVINCED SHE’S NOT THAT EASY TO LOVE, she does find any ex of evan’s threatening no matter what is said or how long ago it was. it’d be interesting to see how that develops bc i think f x f relationships are where hensley’s flaws surface more.

ISSY (TW: RAPE)

OKAY SO PSA: issy is still ruby’s sister but nadine and i have decided to send it back to ruby not knowing that because it was a lot more interesting when it was still a secret. ISSY is still a mum and happy with levi and building her life back up from how damaged it became with her adoptive father in australia. SOOOOO.... - THE FACT SHE’S RUBY’S SISTER - TAKEN BY KENDALL: somebody she opens up to but they’re like “lol ok whatever...no you’re not” and rather than helping her, they think there’s something wrong with her and try to keep her away from ruby bc they think she’s doing it for attention or she’s just some kind of stalker? this would make her feel even less sure about telling ruby. MAYBE said person can kind of tell others that she’s obsessed and it becomes a thing around the academy for a while... - BABY PLOTS: there’s been quite a lot of babies being born. I’D LOVE to do something that maybe gets carried into next gen. maybe issy brings avery on a lot of play dates (when he’s a bit older) with another baby and they jokingly talk about setting their children up? then in next gen, it’ll obviously be up to meg how avery feels about it?

i would love to hear a s3 rant tbh

i started writing this a few months after s3 came out, because i needed that long to sort of soak up all the feelings and changes that came along with it. now i’m used to it enough that i don’t find myself thinking too hard about s3 when i get to it in rewatches–it’s a shift, but one i’m adjusted to. and now it’s premiere day for s4! so i’m finally done writing the rest of it. 

it is a shift, though, and i think that’s why so many of us in the fandom had mixed feelings about it–we still loved it, but we didn’t come away from s3 with the same lingering mood that we did after s2. for me, s3 was the first season that ended on a truly happy note. there was no heartbroken elena at her quinces, there was no distraught family hoping lydia would wake up.

s3 left pretty much all the characters in a good, hopeful place, so why did we find ourselves more inclined to pick it apart? why did it feel different, when all the individual character arcs and plot points were in the same world we love, and clearly handled with the same amount of effort and care as we expect?

the following giant analysis is my attempt to articulate an answer to that, as a fan who has watched the whole show….so many times. so many times, guys. just so much. i don’t even have a number anymore.

each season’s focus was different:

obviously, odaat is an ensemble show. every character gets moments of their own, and most have larger arcs. but because the show needs a focus, each season arguably belongs more to some of the characters than others.

the stars of s1 are penelope and elena.

penelope is our anchor to the family and the story, the one that everything else orbits around. we’re watching her live through the end of her marriage and become more settled in her new role as the primary parent to her kids. elena is figuring out who she is, then dealing with the fallout from sharing her truth with the people who matter to her. her quinces is the topic of debate in 1.01 and closes out the season in 1.13.

lydia steals scenes a lot, but she doesn’t really have a larger arc in s1. at the end of the season, she’s the same person she was at the beginning, just changed by her involvement in elena and penelope’s stories. same goes for alex–he has stories, but they’re a lot smaller and more contained. and schneider and leslie are only involved in the season because of their friendships with lydia and penelope, then in schneider’s case, his dynamic with alex later on.

the stars of s2 are penelope and lydia.

penelope goes back to school, has her first serious relationship post-divorce, and finally deals more seriously with her mental health struggles. lydia decides to become a u.s. citizen, struggles with her feelings toward leslie, and ends the season triumphant after a major health scare.

elena plays a major role in s2, but a lot of her story is a continuation from s1, with the return of victor and her first romantic relationship, and developments like her new job as a handyma’am are awesome but not the central focus of the season. alex gets to be the star of a few episodes, more than in s1, but they’re not really tied in to an overarching arc. his first job, his anti-immigrant bullying, and his time at the movies with penelope are all standalone plots.

schneider has a larger, more serious role in s2, going from ‘you guys are like family’ during quinces in s1 to ‘now, you’re my family’ to lydia in not yet. but he’s still on the outside, looking in. and leslie’s role remains one that supports penelope at work and lydia in friendship, rather than giving him his own plot.

the stars of s3 are alex and schneider.

in s3, penelope’s story is more settled, because so is she. her job is secure, her schoolwork is coming to a close, and her kids are growing up. she has a romance, but mateo is less important to her than max was, and the plot reflects that, with mateo barely around until penelope’s neglect of him becomes part of the joke. pen’s reacting to what’s going on around her more, whether that’s alex’s drug use or elena’s anxiety and secret hotel room or schneider’s sobriety.

that’s not a bad thing! justina kills it in every episode, penelope’s still funny and a tearjerker and strong as hell while flawed…but s3 is the first season that doesn’t completely revolve around her, storywise.

elena’s story is also more settled, on some levels. victor’s return gives her a much-deserved coda, evidence that her life couldn’t be neatly tied up in a bow after a year and that emotional scars do real damage. but even that plot, like her first time with syd and her driving lessons, are part of larger episodes involving other stories rather than the main focus of all of them. victor’s wedding, the finale episode, tries to move forward five of our six main characters, compared to elena’s quinces, which was almost exclusively her show.

lydia’s s3 plot includes her fabulous bouquet list, ideas about aging and motherhood and family. but she’s back to being a scene-stealer–even her bouquet list exists as a subplot in other people’s episodes.

having focused the most on the alvarez women in s1 and s2, the show finally gives alex more room to shine in s3, a development that surprised me but pleasantly so because it turns out that the more they give him to do, the better marcel is at it. s3 shows us an alex growing up, making dumb choices and learning from them, but also being there for his family in bigger and more mature ways, schneider included.

and schneider…gosh. schneider’s arc in s3 is so important that it’s the one they foreshadowed ominously before the season was even on netflix:

he did step into the spotlight as promised, and by the end of the season, he was a full-fledged canon member of the family. not that we needed them to tell us that, even if schneider did. :)

to start with, though, that’s part of why s3 feels different: because it is. the focus widens to different characters, and the ones we’re used to following more closely have more contained arcs.

brothers and other strangers

s3 also decided to introduce new family members. a LOT of new family members. and while they all added to the story, some fit in better than others. the funeral did this well, finally giving lydia’s estranged sister a face to go with the name, and giving us more of a glimpse at the big family penelope grew up around before the military and parenting narrowed her everyday focus.

but the show’s decision to anchor an episode on brothers gave us what felt like a lot of consistency issues. they explained pen’s sudden s3 brother, tito, by making his absence during lydia’s coma a topic of discussion. they couldn’t actually include a never before mentioned sibling for penelope without creating bigger confusion, though. it just wasn’t possible.

tito is apparently the older brother that lydia idolizes, but until 3.04 she’s never mentioned him in conversation once? when she’s in a coma reflecting on her family and how they’ll go on without her, her beloved son isn’t worth a mention? i can forgive the show for deciding to give pen a brother three years in, but i can’t pretend it wasn’t jarring when odaat treated her like an only child before that.

and this is a much smaller issue, but also in s3 suddenly syd has a younger brother? who is homeschooled too? when they were telling elena their only classmate was their chinchilla the year before? like i said, a relatively small thing but it still bugs me because it’s so random.

schneider now has sibling(s) too, apparently, but his comment about not being his father’s favorite child was the first time that came up, in three years of him talking about his parents and household staff and childhood stressors. i have so many questions. hopefully future seasons will clarify some things.

anyway, hermanos was a deeply confusing episode for me because tito came out of nowhere and schneider’s conversation with leslie, while lovely, was the first time we heard schneider (or anyone actually) label his relationship with penelope a sibling-ish one. it was clear during lydia’s coma that he considered lydia a friend who was also somewhat a maternal figure in his life, but it wasn’t until s3 that the show extended that dynamic, from ‘lydia is like his mom’ to ‘therefore he and pen are both her kids.’

i’ll get into this later, but i honestly think that was meant more to tie into the episode��s theme than because it was supposed to shift his friendship with penelope into new territory. we’re watching penelope deal with tito, and elena deal with alex, and schneider makes the one comment during an important scene with leslie. it’s still jarring though.

the very fact that schneider wasn’t with the family during their vacation felt like an inconsistency to a lot of us, whose two-seasons-worth of headcanons about schneider make ‘he secretly books the room next to theirs and crashes their vacation’ more believable than him staying home alone.

it was done in service to the season’s goals of adding tito to the mix and folding leslie in more, and both goals were accomplished…it just felt a little strange.

dr b’s greater inclusion minimizing other relationships

speaking of leslie, s3 for him was what s2 gave schneider–more ties to more characters, and the first real subplots we’ve seen him have about serious subjects. for good or bad, a lot of what stood out to me in s3 as different was related to the show making more room for leslie.

schneider not being with the alvarezes on their vacation, even though he’s at every family event including funerals now? penelope made it happen by ‘entrusting’ schneider with the care of her house(plant), but really it played out that way so we could see schneider and leslie bond.

elena’s driving lessons being handled by leslie? it’s fair enough that penelope isn’t the one doing it, since she’s busy and it stresses her out, but if you want me to believe that schneider wouldn’t have jumped at the opportunity, even with avery in his life now, you’re crazy. there’s no believable canon reason in s1 or s2 why leslie would be the one doing that, but it played out that way so we could see elena and leslie bond.

even alex gets to know leslie better because he’s more involved with elena, meaning that after s3 leslie finally has connections to the whole family (which schneider accomplished in s2 once he was mentoring elena in building repairs).

by the season finale, leslie is attending victor’s wedding, mistakenly butting in on elena’s time with her dad, and finally traveling to cuba with lydia while he shares his practice with penelope.

however you feel about s3 in general, the show had to change its usual dynamic in order to include leslie more in situations like driving lessons and weddings. it just wouldn’t have worked otherwise. for example, the funeral at the beginning of s3 doesn’t involve him at all, because why would it? unlike schneider, he hasn’t spent a ton of time bonding with the extended alvarez family prior to s3. he’s involved in big moments because he’s close to lydia or penelope.

s3 is the first time we really see him get involved in the story just on his own merits. and that required less schneider in family moments, which paired nicely with the season’s other visible difference.

schneider being more isolated from the family

the schneider we know and love from s2 would have offered to take over elena’s driving lessons as soon as he realized they were stressing pen out. he would have found an excuse to join them on vacation, and he would have been present when penelope realized elena was sneaking off to a hotel room with syd.

schneider prior to s3 was always around that way, witnessing threesome porn on alex’s laptop and picking up strangers at the airport for the quinces, making it easier for penelope to go to him when she needed advice or a hug. in s1, she may have started out getting his help as a last resort, but by late s2, she was often turning to him instead of her own family, or her support group. pen was reluctantly aware of his many hookups because she was at his apartment so much.

once avery’s in the picture, though, we see less of schneider in the family orbit, and it’s really not explained. penelope pulls him (literally) into alex’s drug storyline, but after that he’s mainly in other people’s storylines, like lydia wanting to teach penelope to cook, or alex spending too much on shoes.

even in anxiety, schneider’s status as penelope’s most trusted person is one scene in an episode that shows how she interacts with everyone in her life, rather than the climax of it–the way his time with her is in hello penelope.

beyond individual episodes, it’s the relationships that matter, and we just see a lot less of that with schneider and the family in s3. in s1 we saw him bonding with alex all the time, and in s2 schneider became more important to elena. but in s3…where is he?

alex goes to his apartment because penelope ordered him to, to get a lecture about reckless spending, and that’s the only one-on-one time we see them have before the laundry room in drinking and driving. are they still close? i’m assuming they are, because alex clearly still cares about him and vice versa, but whether it’s because alex is growing up or because schneider’s busier with his first real girlfriend, they’ve stopped hanging out.

i feel the same way about schneider and elena. her support of him when he relapses (how amazing is it that elena is the first alvarez to use the word ‘love’ with schneider, when he’s been closer to lydia and penelope longer? i adore one gay cuban teenager) makes it clear that he’s still important to her, but even her building maintenance seems to be done alone now. the only solo conversations they even have are at the funeral, in the very beginning of the season.

and while schneider and penelope remain friends in s3, the nature of their friendship has changed in a lot of ways. she’s at his apartment less, he’s at hers mostly when the whole family is around, and until his father’s visit they’re less close physically along with everything else.

schneider’s absence in big moments like elena learning to drive or smaller ones like a rare family vacation can be explained as storytelling choices, but they also make it easier to understand how he started drinking again, and how it was possible for him to keep it hidden (along with his avery breakup) before victor noticed.

when penelope went off her meds, schneider was the first person to confront her about her unusual behavior, but penelope doesn’t see the change in him until she’s looking for it. some of that is the show arguing that alcoholics are really good at covering their secrets up, but it also only works because though schneider is making appearances at meals and still involved with family, he’s around a lot less than he used to be.

schneider’s sobriety

deciding to dive into schneider’s sobriety was the defining choice of s3, in my opinion, that made it feel so different. if i had to pick just one, that would be it, because so much else spiderwebs out from it. 

finally seeing more of the world schneider comes from, in the arrival of his father? a major relapse trigger for him.

penelope telling him that choosing his father over his tenants means he’s not part of their family? seemingly the last thing she said to him before he drank.

his inclusion in the alvarez family museum? a way to show how his sobriety is the most impressive work he’s done in his whole life. 

penelope (and the rest of the family, but especially penelope, once they’re alone) doing whatever they can to support him and convince him to keep fighting? the clearest sign we’ve had in three season of how important schneider really is to them.

it’s an amazing story arc for him, and as much as it hurts to watch, i love it. 

but boy does it make season three a change from the first two.

after first setting up how proud of him dr b. and lydia are (the closest thing he has to loving parents) for his years of sobriety, we then see him tempted to drink thanks to his father’s actions and just general presence. 

but because of how the show handles the reveal, we actually don’t know for sure that he’s drinking again until penelope and lydia confirm it. we can be rightly suspicious–i saw that the dangling tag was no longer on the bottle when he placed it on his coffee table, and assumed then that he’d already opened it–but we can’t know.

which means that for the first time, just like penelope, we don’t know if we can trust schneider. schneider! who has wanted nothing more than to earn and keep the family’s trust this whole time. 

it’s so unsettling. as is his visible unraveling once he realizes he’s been caught. 

and the thing is, that we’ve seen this before, just like penelope has lived it before–the worst of her fights and fear with victor happened offscreen, but when he comes back we see him lie to her, try to convince her he can handle his own problems and she should leave it alone. 

but that…that was season one. that was victor, who moved in and out of the picture often in really hurtful ways, and who we weren’t encouraged to get attached to. 

schneider is lovable, and loving, and present. and yet in season three, he also becomes a version of himself who is reactive, and dishonest, and will do whatever it takes to avoid being confronted about his relapse. including trying to hurt and push away the people he loves most.

i think part of why his relapse is so effective as an arc is because it’s as hard for the viewers to expect such a sharp turn from the sweet, laid-back guy we met in s1 as it is for penelope and her family. but that’s also why s3 leaves us shaken.

schneider & avery

oh gosh, schneider and avery. i’ve talked about them a lot before, so i’ll just say here that they brought her in with great potential, then let her stay so far on the sidelines of the show after the valentine’s day episode that it became impossible to know who she was anymore, what role she played in his life, and what their future could possibly look like now that they were reunited at the wedding. 

is she the gorgeous nerdy artist who has just enough in common with him to be a good fit long-term? is she rich and more suited to the world he comes from? is she uninterested in his life outside of what they do for fun together, so that she’ll never get to know his chosen family at all?

it seemed to change each time we saw her, and by the end of her involvement in schneider’s s3 storyline, we didn’t even know what had broken them up before we were supposed to be rooting for them to get back together. 

my theory continues to be that the people making the show were blinded by the impossible cuteness of real life marrieds todd and india, and forgot to make sure their plot threads on the show made sense. 

because avery was never going to get a ton of screen time, she was a minor character–but revolving any part of his story around her kind of gave the show a duty to at least give us a clue of what the heck was going on.

avery + other characters

my other major complaint about avery (who i genuinely adored, at least for her first couple of episodes! my liveblog of her existence in s3 is just a lot of flailing about her being so freaking cute) is that the show keeps her in a totally unprecedented bubble.

penelope’s love interests? always interact with her family. whether it’s ben getting a text from lydia, because he wasn’t around long enough for more, mateo joining an unexpected party, or max spending whatever time he could at her house…we always got to know how her guys related to her family, and that helped us understand them and the relationships better. 

syd of course spends a ton of time around elena’s family, and we’re going to see alex’s girlfriend meet the family this season. you could argue that those comparisons are different because schneider’s not one of them, his storylines are less central than say, penelope’s are–and that’s true. but even dr. b’s girlfriend got a long bathroom scene with lydia and we see/know much less about leslie than we do schneider. 

mostly though, this bugs me because avery clearly spends time in their home! she’s there for valentine’s day, and penelope also tells schneider to invite her during ‘the man.’ and she works at the kids’ school, so she’s in their orbit on another level. penelope is able to get in touch with her and find out they broke up.

and yet, the first real love interest for schneider that could be a healthy and serious relationship…and onscreen, lydia never meets her. doesn’t try to figure out if she’s good enough for the adopted son lydia has been encouraging to find love for three years. they never interact. 

elena, who developed a serious interest in alex’s love life and a taste for gossip in season one, appears to have no interest in the woman schneider’s seeing. alex, i could understand not caring, because he’s generally happier caring about what directly affects him and what he can do to help others…if schneider’s happy, i get why he might stay out of it. 

but it just sort of grates on me that none of the women in schneider’s family have a conversation with avery onscreen, beyond the moment when penelope is trying to kick her and schneider out and she pushes back. if avery is in a scene, she’s talking to and focused on schneider, or nikki, or schneider’s father. none of the family. is that because she doesn’t feel like she has to make an effort to know them? or because the show just wasn’t thinking about that? even though we see it with every other love interest brought into the house?

i mean, when you pay attention to that, then of course we don’t have a clear sense of who she is! how can we when there’s no reason to believe that anyone who cares about schneider does either? 

penelope & mateo

penelope’s relationship with mateo puzzles me almost as much as schneider and avery–and in some ways, even more. we see their friendship first, we watch them deny interest in more than that with each other. then penelope pushes the issue and they do decide to date, but just like with avery, the show doesn’t have a lot of screentime to offer him. 

so what we know about her new boyfriend is that they have some things in common that she really values but maybe too much in common to avoid fighting about it–and then we barely see him again, learning mainly through his absence that she’s just not that into him, until eventually they break up because it turns out he was more into his ex than her anyway.

there’s a karmic sort of humor in that for penelope, but for me it left mateo feeling like a waste of a love interest. we really didn’t get to enjoy their relationship much, especially if they wanted us to miss it when it was gone…so was it worth the time they spent setting it up in the first place? 

for me the answer to that was no. especially since as her ‘longtime’ school volunteer buddy, we’d never seen him before. and i feel like it’s not likely we’ll see him again.

penelope & schneider

this is a frustrating one for me because while i have complaints about these two and their relationship in s3 it was also AMAZING and i LOVED it. both are true.

the confusing part is that their dynamic is inconsistent in s3. think some of that is because the show is trying to do so much at once. fully bring schneider into the family, focus their romantic lives on other people, deepen their bond, deny the possibility of a romance between them, keep them each other’s person.

in s1 they’re landlord and tenant but also becoming real friends. in s2 they’re best friends and he’s a honorary part of the family now (though still an outsider). 

but in s3 he’s established clearly as her best friend and most trusted person, a guy who’s become deeply important to her and her whole family–so much so that after his relapse, they come together to support him much like they all did lydia in s2. 

but penelope treats him dramatically differently from moment to moment and episode to episode in s3. like an annoying brother when he’s getting cooking lessons from her mom, like a life partner when alex’s behavior has her angry and scared, like a bff when she’s considering dating mateo, and even a little like a flirting companion at the wedding.

it’s not completely unprecedented for their dynamic to have multiple layers. his relationship with lydia is complicated too. in past seasons, he flirted with both penelope and her mom–while they also laughed at victor calling them a couple and he told comatose lydia how important her mothering was to him. 

but they lean harder into it during lydia’s cooking lessons, while still hitting the beats hard of ‘are you sure you’re not dating?’ during penelope’s support group and schneider’s dad’s visit. the contrasting takes on their friendship is just a lot of whiplash in a single season.

another thing about s3 that’s different is the kinds of physical contact between penelope and schneider. you might not notice unless you’re looking for it, but penelope actually touches schneider more than he does her. lightly, casually, briefly. she makes contact in a friendly, familiar way all the time. schneider is more likely to touch her when it’s important, in big moments, as though he knows that she trusts him and welcomes him in her space but he doesn’t want to abuse the privilege.

i studied it for making gifsets, and she touches him more every season. and while he touches her a lot more in s2 than in s1, s3 is actually about the same amount. penelope grew visibly closer to him this season, but he held himself back from getting any more familiar. he was also the only one of the two of them who compared her to blood family. for now,it’s really up to interpretation if there’s a deeper reasoning behind that.

for both of them, though, more than half of the physical contact they make in s3 happens in just two episodes, both towards the end of the season. not only does schneider’s father’s visit and his relapse bring them closer together, literally and physically, but the season up until that point has them further apart. 

they spend time together stalking alex, or with schneider talking her down from her panic, but the casual dinners are less, and she’s going to him less for advice–which means there are less small touches, less moments where schneider sits her down on his couch or she nudges him affectionately. 

that makes it all the more intense when they do connect, with penelope holding his hand and them hugging twice all within the same few minutes. and then after his relapse, their conversation alone in the apartment is so tense and so much more separate than they usually are.

the last time she touched him was in the man, the most open and complimentary she’s ever been, and look what happened. this isn’t the man she knows and loves, she needs to reach her best friend who’s still in there somewhere under all the pain and self-loathing, but she tries to do so with honesty first, with bluntness, with tough love, with listening kindly but not without pushing back, and finally with his place in her family–as a role model for the kids. 

only once he’s agreeing with her about the course of action and just doubting his ability to survive it does she reach out. once he’s himself again. and then she’s more there for him physically than she ever has been before. this is a new level of intimacy between them, schneider letting her in rather than excusing himself during tough times, her giving rather than just taking support, her being his silent rock the way he always is hers.

it’s just different than the previous seasons, between them. the problem is that while you’re watching it, it’s hard to pin down what message about their relationship the show is trying to send, since they touch less but more deliberately, and they’re family but not in a way that has well-defined boundaries.

misc other gripes

elena’s world shrinking

as of s3, what exactly is elena’s life outside of syd and anxiety? don’t get me wrong, i love her relationship with syd, and the anxiety plot was good–driving lessons too, which were tied to the anxiety somewhat. 

but if we’re pulling back to look at the bigger picture, elena in season one was a lonely club leader, figuring out her identity, and navigating disagreements with her family. 

elena in season two was experiencing her first relationship, finding her first group of geeky friends to hang out with irl, confronting the fallout of victor’s behavior in s1, and continuing her academic hard work while also adding lots of political engagement.

in comparison, elena in season three exchanges ‘i love yous’ and has sex for the first time, as well as makes up with syd after their first fight. she learns she has anxiety and gets her driver’s license and continues to heal her relationship with victor, but…she has no friends anymore? no mention of josh or carmen or any of the echo park gamers? and she’s studying for testing, it seemed like, but she’s not in clubs anymore or volunteering or protesting? her whole world outside her family isn’t really syd, is it?? because i know first love is amazing, but that’s not healthy.

i said up there that less of the story belongs to elena after s1, and this is a large part of why i feel that way. the show treats her like some of her bigger arcs are settling down, rather than expanding, giving her subplots instead and making room for the other characters. it’s weird to watch though when just a quick comment here and there would have implied that she still spends time with friends or fellow social justice warriors.

lydia’s humor goes dark

when it comes to lydia, season one includes some jokes about her ending up in a home–or to be more specific, the fact that she never will. her comedy in season two revolves a lot around her identity, with her decision to become a citizen. 

and then, we go into season three after her coma. though she appears to be in good health, the family is still worried, and elena especially tries to protect her from herself.

whether it’s specifically related to her near-death experience or not, season three involves way more death jokes. things like lydia looking up, and inviting god to reunite her with her husband ‘berto, i am ready,’ she says, then sort of shrugs when death doesn’t arrive. 

it’s not unfunny…but it’s a different kind of humor. i can’t say i enjoyed the edge to it, probably because i was elena’s age when my grandmother died, and she was also a deeply religious woman who was awaiting her invitation to heaven. 

alex also has no friends anymore? does he still play baseball?

the way that s3 gives alex so much more to do, storywise, is awesome. but just like elena, his world seems to have gotten smaller in terms of socializing. we hear about his girlfriend but don’t meet her, and we never see him interact with friends, either–besides things like instagram. 

this one’s really a minor complaint because he has whole important storylines in s3 and at least the show does imply he still has friends…but it’s a little odd for the most popular alvarez teen to spend more time chatting with dr. berkowitz than any friends his own age. especially when he used to be so involved in baseball that we at least saw his teammates. 

it’s not clear to me if season three just didn’t overlap with sports season for him this time around, or if he gave baseball up–but if it were the latter, you’d think they would mention that.

scott came back but not lori

i honestly don’t know which of the show’s casting choices are influenced by availability and which are choices they make for plots they want–other than carmen leaving, because i know ariela went to another show.

but while lori hasn’t been around since season one, scott went missing after the second episode of season two…and then appeared in the second episode of season three before never showing up in the rest of the season. 

there’s no continuity problem with this or anything–i just don’t like scott and wish that if they were only going to keep one of pen’s coworkers, it would’ve been lori. i know that wouldn’t have let him do what they were able to with scott. but still.

max came back why?

i like max, for the record. he’s been my favorite of all penelope’s love interests so far, and i felt bad for them both when they broke up. but in terms of the finale, it felt really jarring the way they included his little appearance. 

in that one scene, the show managed to remind us that they truly loved each other, genuinely supported and cared for each other, had common background and went back a long time as friends–and that out of all the men penelope had been with, he was the one she was still hurting over.

and then he left, as easily as he appeared. 

besides reminding us that her major relationship in s2 was with max, what did that scene accomplish? it didn’t feel like closure, because it didn’t add anything to their original breakup. but it also didn’t change anything about how they ended–he remained someone she wasn’t going to be with, even though they loved each other a lot. 

the only explanation i can think of is that the show wanted to work with the actor again. because if their goal was to confirm that yes, she and max really were great together even though she wasn’t going to be with him…we didn’t need more confirmation of that. we got the message in s2. ed quinn is great though.

so for ten years, it was berllin, her older brother, her mom, and her dad. everything was honestly pretty normal, he worked as a bank teller and her mom was an elementary school teacher. 

when she was ten, her mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and began treatment, it was in the middle of her moms chemo treatments that her dad decided he was done and left the three of them on their own. 

her older brother was stuck taking care of them both, berlin helped where she could, but it wasn’t exactly in the means of income. 

her mom did go into remission, but later it came back when berlin was 15. as soon as she turned 16, it was her brothers turn to leave them, claiming he was tired of it.  

from then on, she taught both piano and guitar lessons to anyone who was willing to let her teach as a means to support herself and her mom. 

music was and always has been a massive part of her life and was one of the few things she used as an escape when everyday life was just Too Much, so getting to teach others was something she really liked to do. 

when she was 18, one of her student’s parents had taken an interest in her and invited her over for dinner where they offered her the opportunity to be with them. she said yes and began her secret relationship, mostly using the money they gave her to help pay rent and for groceries, or if it was things, then it allowed her to use the money from lessons for other things. 

she was taking classes at pcc mostly online so that she had more time to be at home, but when the parents she was dating mentioned that the school their child was attending, cape coral, was offering a scholarship they encouraged her to apply.

like being bitter is probably one of her defining personality traits, and it’s not even towards rich people bc of their money or anything, she’s just like bitter that THIS is the life she ended up with.

she can definitely sit and just have a normal conversation without chewing someone’s head off but she never really seems particularly cheery.

she’s one of those people that likes to run to blow off steam, which isn’t the worst thing in the world, but she’ll leave and go running at like 2am bc she’s stressed. 

is a hardass and thinks she’s like top shit even though she has absolutely no reason to be? thinks because she doesn’t directly “engage” or involve herself in drama that she’s better than everyone

is NOT afraid to call you out on your bullshit bc she really doesn’t have time to deal with it at all

so i was thinking and really, she’s a bit of the Corruptor. which sounds bad, but it’s kinda like, she’s so far up her own ass she thinks she’s better than everyone and that people need to be brought down from their pedestals and clouds. so she tends to poke at people until they show their worst sides, or sides they don’t necessarily like very much. i also saw a little bit of the Femme Fatale in her too, just because she’s gorgeous (duh) and fully uses that to her advantage when she can, like the affair turned sugar daddy/baby situation she has with one of the cape coral parents.

can anyone believe I’ve had these ocs for ten years ?? I mean, I don’t know the exact amount of time, but ten years sounds about right. They've been through a crazy amount of changes through that time, many way before I started sharing these guys on the internet. (I know I started sharing them on tumblr in 2014) a good handful of them didn’t even exist then. 

anyway I wanted to share some old facts about them. (If you want to look like the original post of the fifty character, it’s here.)

Advik was a lot more pessimistic in his previous drafts. I think making him happier and packing him with anxiousness has greatly improved his character. (of course I did why else would I do it lol)

Audrey and Nathan weren’t originally siblings. neither were Meghan, Crystal, and Zack. Neither was Aurora and Sam’s shared sister Avery. In fact Avery used to be stepsister of Naomi and Sky. 

Trinity was like.. super preppy and actually a nice person ?? I then made her a hell of a lot more antagonistic and then ditched her aesthetic for something more menacing. She’s actually softened up again but she still likes being evil.

Actually a lot of my story villains were one shot characters and none of my guys were really all that bad. 

Kat was actually pretty antagonistic and had a knack for threatening and borderline stalking people. She’s still as kooky and as much an outcast as she was, but I put some of her “villainous” traits in her backstory so that her current development is about her redeeming herself. 

Brian and Zack used to be the biggest of enemies. Actually so were Seth and Zack. Lots of people hated Zack and for kind of a decent reason. He was always an asshole, but at least now he’s not taken seriously.

Audrey wasn’t my main protagonist, it was Morgan ! Morgan is still my favorite character but I think her being on the side of the main cast fits her well.

The story actually had the premise of being slice for life and Morgan and Advik going about their minor antics with the help of their friends and the people they liked a little less. There was actually nothing futuristic or magical about their story.

Sam and Seth were best friends ! Their stories are so far apart now but I think if I played my cards right I could get them to eventually befriend each other. I can still see them being friends. 

Brian and Ian were best friends too. Their characters actually aren’t different from when I first made them (they’re good characters let’s be honest) so I can definitely see them being friends and I actually want to make them so now that I think about it ? I'm sure Ian would take a big interest in Brian’s background in the wasteland and his six-eyed son. 

Avery was a very sweet and likable person. In fact everyone adored her (except of a handful including Cora and Kat) It came at the price of her not being the funnest character to write for but I’m very pleased with her progress.

Whitney and Matthew are the only couple to make it through all of this. They’re still a ship and will always be. 

Brandon and Heidi dated at some point ? I think it worked for a brief moment but as I exaggerated their characters over time it just didn’t work out. 

I actually had soooo many oc ships that would be so weird to work with today. Audrey and Brian were a thing ?? Back when Audrey was treated as more of a bad person than, like, my main protagonist lol

Mike had a crush on Crystal. This was for comical purposes only, totally unrequited. Another unrequited crush was Sky’s crush on Morgan. Actually I could still see that one working lmao.

Morgan and Seth dated. This one isn’t too far off as they canonically hooked up in my current story.

Lilith and Sean were a couple ?? They had the same treatment as Heidi and Brandon; As I changed their characters I realized they weren’t good together. 

I hate to mention this one but Avery was originally introduced as a love interest for Advik (This was so many years ago guys !!) They were kind of a boring couple tbh but I’m glad I managed to make a really good friendship for them in my current story.

discolouration from lack of blood!! vampires have fairly bad circulation as is. so extremities get a little corpsey after a while without any juice- it goes away with prolonged blood drinking though.

i think they would consider it but i also think agnes is a hater and wouldnt be happy about another cat- i think a little betta tank would b an option for sure- but scarlet would probably like to have a lot of pets in general :^)

she would for sure definitely, she probably has knitted kelly stuff before shes just shy about it. and eventually avery will be emotionally secure enough to share knitting tips 😌 proud of her

2. Does your OC collect anything? What do they collect?

Nah, Silence Agenda isn’t generally the type of place that encourages lots of material possessions. She’s not sentimental.

3. What kind of things is your OC allergic to?

She had a gluten allergy I decided at one point I think?? But then I kinda forgot about that, so not sure if that’s still a thing. But other than that, she’s pretty lucky in the allergy department (at least when it comes to like... animals and plants and such)

5. What is your OC’s first memory?

okay I KNEW I’d already answered this one in another ask game (wait it was totally from the same one lololol oh well), so i found my old answer from it, here it is: her first few memories mostly involve playing alone in her room or exploring her house. since her parents were so distant when she was growing up, even her first memories don’t revolve around them at all

My first instinct was to say fire, so we’ll go with fire

She doesn’t exactly have time for hobbies. But if she did... singing, and acting/theatre would be the main ones.

Oh you know. Murder. Her job is a hitman so... that’s... that. She doesn’t think much about it, she figures she can’t really be picky since it’s something, and it got her away from her parents and the life she hated. Her dream job though, would be an Broadway actress.

19. What kind of music do they listen to? Do they have a favorite song?

Lots of stuff, mostly female artists, pop, some country (but like... the slappin country like “I DUG MY KEYS INTO THE SIDE OF HIS PRETTY LITTLE SOUPED UP FOUR WHEEL DRIVE” or like... Miranda Lambert shit. If pressed for her favorite song, she’d probably just say the entirety of Taylor Swift’s Reputation.

She’s left-handed! She is also an incredible singer! (soprano, has a real nice belt)

29. If they could choose their epitaph for their grave, what would they choose?

she wouldn’t care tbh. In Silence Agenda, when you die, there’s no real assurance of a grave at all, so it’s not something that’s ever crossed her mind, even though she faces death all the time.

31. What is their most traumatic memory/experience? What is their favorite memory?

Oh man.... So much, unfortunately. Probably when her parents were killed, and then SHE was nearly killed by Stefan the first time. Or possibly when she was shot in the arm, and nearly bled to death. Sorry, slight spoilers. FAVORITE memory... up to the end of the first book, not much that I can really think of, except maybe when she cut her hair, which was very freeing for her. But in the sequel, I’m planning a scene where Nyx cooks for her, while she’s staying with them and Avery, and it’s the first time she’s had a home cooked meal pretty much ever, and she feels wanted and cared for genuinely for the first time in her life, and it’s... it’s good. It’s tender.

37. What’s something that your character does, that other people don’t normally do?

I mean.... kill people on a regular basis? Or like... on a smaller scale, I can’t think of anything in particular. She talks to herself a bit, but I think a lot of people do. Only when she’s alone though.

41. What does your character do when they’re angry? Why?

She lashes out, both verbally and physically, depending on the situation. She wants to gain control over a situation, so she does what she can to feel in control, which usually means lashing out. She hates most people, but her anger usually really stems from being angry at herself for not measuring up to her own expectations for herself.

43. What was the most offensive thing your character has ever said?

She’s said a lot of offensive shit in her life asdoifhasdoifhadsoih. In canon, she’s rude a lot of the time, but as far as like... actually offensive stuff? Idk, I think a lot of offensive stuff though is said out of ignorance and being very out of touch with reality due to growing up rich and privileged. Maybe when she told Nyx that they deserved to be homeless. That was. Not great.

Let’s have the SALT. (Mandatory disclaimer that my own personal feelings towards the SHIP does not inherently extend to the shippers, that I ship many dynamics that some people would call “abusive” given the ongoing debate over what “enemies to lovers” means, and that some dynamics here are things that I might have shipped under other circumstances, but things just...didn’t work out that way.)

Cats - I hated Plato/Victoria before I even knew that it was POSSIBLE to hate a ship that much. I always went with the Plato = Macavity theory to get that little skeavy dudebro off my girl. (Also, I’ll be honest, the whole “mating dance” thing is...such a fucking weird sequence anyway. Like, my ship preferences aside, ALW WHY DID YOU HAVE TO HAVE A SCENE WHERE THE CATS FUCK?) 

Pirates of the Caribbean - Jack Sparrow/Elizabeth. 

Harry Potter - Ron/Hermione. I never saw it, tbh, and they seemed to be pretty bad for one another, even in the books. The films just took it up several notches. 

OUAT - Captain motherfucking Swan. I hated that smug, greasy little motherfucker so much. So much. 

Star Trek Ds9: Jadzia/Worf. THERE. I SAID IT. Both sides brought out the absolute worst in each other, leading to an absolute trashfire of a ship that obliterated all in its wake. AND THEN WE HAD TO DEAL WITH THE FALLOUT OF THAT. EVEN AFTER THE SHIP WAS *DEAD*. Don’t mind me, don’t mind me. I’m cool, I’m cool. 

Carmilla - Tbh...Laferry. Never my thing. I know that her character development’s a BIG part of Perry’s arc and I fully embrace character growth, but it just. Left a bad taste in my mouth. And the way shippers used to treat Laflashdrive shippers back in the day. As if shipping a nonbinary character and a flashdrive somehow makes it hetero. (#LetLafBeaRobotfucker2k19). 

Les Miserables - You know what? While I’m on the Salt Train...

Enjolras/Grantaire. Now, there are plenty of ships that are probably more deeply annoying to me, but none are as prevalent as this one. And I might like them a lot more if they WEREN’T so prevalent. But as it is, it’s like a black HOLE that’s devoured the fandom, so that you’d think the entire fucking novel/musical is about these two. And. Maybe I shouldn’t talk given what I ship, but it isn’t even like they’re THEM at this point, they’re just two generic white guys in an “uwu” relationship. And I’m not speaking for EVERY single thing given that I have neither the time, concentration, or will to read every. Single. Thing. Made about these two, but it’s something I’ve noticed, though I’m not saying that I haven’t enjoyed SOME things made about them and the whole “You believe in nothing.” “I believe in you” is...good content. 

It’s like...you’re walking in the woods (there’s no one around and your phone is dead) and you see a brightly colored pink tree. At first, it’s great. A pink tree! You’ve never seen one of those before. You wander further into the woods, and there’s another! And another! And soon enough, you’re surrounded by pink trees, in a technicolored horror realm. Where’s the sky? Where did you come in at? You think you remember seeing the sun once, but NO, it’s another fucking pink tree blocking your way. There is no God, there is no ground, there is only a technicolored nightmare blocking your every move, drowning you in visions of Barbie-esque horror. 

Terra Nova - Skye/Lucas. WHY GOD WHY? Look, we KNOW I have terrible taste in ships, some of which have...questionable dynamics. BUT EVEN I CAN’T GET INTO THIS ONE. There’s no...mutual spark between the two of them, just Lucas creeping on Skye and Skye trying to get away. Also, since I’m here...Skye is estimate to have been born in ‘32-33, making her approximately 16-17 by the time the plot kicks into gear. Let’s be very generous and bump her into 17-18. Lucas? 2124, making him...oh, 25. Not the WORST age gap I’ve ever seen in my lifetime...but....questionable. Very questionable. And I know the series wants to have us believe that people grow up faster (see: The fact they actually think Maddy’s old enough to GET MARRIED. TO A SOLDIER. WHO IS REALISTICALLY IN DANGER OF MAKING HER A WIDOW,) but NO. Like, at my CURRENT AGE, with less than four years separating me from that age gap, I can’t see it. That is still at least 7 years of experience in the “real world” that she doesn’t have. He still saw someone with THAT MUCH of an age gap with him and WANTED something, whether or not she wanted it or not, and tried to PURSUE that something while calling her “sister”. Like, I can’t stop anyone from shipping it and I have a firm “ship and let ship” mentality, but....EW. EWEWEWEWEWEWEWEWeWEEWEWEW. 

B5 - I’m in the same boat as you as far as...on one hand. Byron/Lyta makes me want to vomit, but also...our Teep OC does owe her existence to her weird, hetero white goth uncle. 

Star Wars: Han/Leia. Because, as we all know, cornering a woman before you kiss her is the love story of the generation. Han would have been better with Luke and Leia with Holdo. 

The Pirate Queen - Tiernan/Gráinne. I. Hate. This. Ship. 

His Dark Materials - Torn between Ruta Skadi/Asriel and Lyra/Will. Tbh, leaning towards the latter because while the former is AWFUL and signifies the quite frankly terrible writing decisions that distinguish the second and third books, at least it didn’t involve a badass, feral girl child becoming a dainty, submissive 50s housewife in the body of a 12 year old. “Oh, Will, I’ll do whatever you say, I promise. I won’t use my awesome powers unless you say I can, you’re so fantastic, Will.” Gag me. Also...they’re twelve. This doesn’t HAVE to be an epic, tragic romance, and the fact that their “kiss” (WHAT THE FUCK PULLMAN, WHAT THE FUCK, I’M NOT A PURITAN BUT WHAT THE FUCK) is the key to saving the universe? Really? Basically, they should have been friends. 

1789 - Danton/Solène. (I KNOW WHAT YOU THOUGHT I WOULD SAY, BUT NO. MY HATRED FOR THIS ONE MANAGES TO OUTSHINE IT.) “But Rachel,” you might say, “You’ve been very, very open about preferring anything to Ronan/Olympe” and that’s TRUE. But the Toho version managed to push my hatred of this one with The Scene, AKA “Go back to the kitchen, Solène and let the menfolk take care of this.” The French version didn’t even really have it as A Thing, he was just a customer. And the amount of time Danton spends with Solène is always directly proportional to the amount of spinal surgery she’s going to have. Now, I can’t exactly BLAME the two Japanese productions for doing what they did, because they have to appeal to a Japanese audience in the way they see fit. It’s an ADAPTATION of 1789, not a tour of it. But that doesn’t mean I have to LIKE it. And. Like. You know there’s no way THAT one’s going to end in a way that’s good for Solène. Either (1) he’ll set her aside for his family or (2) If they SOMEHOW stay together...the Reign of Terror’s looming. 

Also: Danton/Charlotte. No. No. Just. No. There are so many reasons why. But no.

10.  Is there a fandom you read fic from but don’t write in?

We’ve both discussed a lot about how...DIFFICULT it can be to write fic for something. There are a lot of things I love dearly but just don’t have it in me to write fic for. Ace Attorney is an obvious one, Mozart l’Opera Rock, Elisabeth (though I’m trying to work on that one), Les Miserables, Star Wars, Star Trek, B5....a ton more that I could mention but it would honestly take too much time. Words hard, reading still hard but slightly easier. 

21. What was the first fanfic you ever wrote? 

The first thing I ever wrote, when I was five years old, was (very heteronormative) fanfiction for The Stinky Cheese Man, where he finds The Stinky Cheese Woman, which now, of course, I recognize as my own attempt to write myself into a narrative from which I’d been excluded. Or something. I think my mom still has it buried someplace, lurking...

Also, @theocraindora at some point managed to get me to write at least one full Carmilla AU during the second season, when we both must have been about 17-18-ish, if my math’s not too dubious, and that was the first thing I ever actually finished for a long time, even though it didn’t ever meet my personal standards for publishing and is likely to stay buried. For awhile, at least. 

23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.

Since I talked about PLP’s tragic backstory, time for something happier. Paradise Lost, which I’m actually pretty damn happy with because it was my first time working with something that’s not a historical piece, and it was honestly a treat working with Mira’s voice. I think that Mira really “clicked” for me as a character here. Like, “Yes, this is why she’s like this, this makes sense.” There are some times where you can really feel a character’s voice when you’re writing and you can get things out, and this was one of those very rare times for me. Not saying that it’s going to happen NEXT time, but this time, it was rather relaxing. 

It was honestly one of the smoother writing experiences I had? Like, it only took me about a day or so, from when we exchanged PMs to publishing it, which is pretty impressive, all things considered. I’m still not tossing out doing anything more with this world in the future, tbh. That and Goosefic were probably two of the easiest to just...get out. (WHICH. 92 HITS. GOOSEFIC HAS 92 HITS. THAT IS INSANE FOR A ONE-SHOT IN A SMALL FANDOM. HOLY SHIT.)

50. How did you get into reading and/or writing fanfiction?

I’ve been WRITING fanfiction since I could hold a pencil and make scribbles.  When I was younger, I could write that kind of thing easily, the shame came later. 

Finding out that fanfiction EXISTED...was probably when I was about 9-10 and found Balto x Harry Potter crossover fanfiction. Which. In hindsight. Was pretty horrible, but my young self was CAPTIVATED because Balto and Harry Potter? In the same universe? IT WAS LIKE MAGIC. 

Astonishingly, I did not read M rated stuff until I was at least 15-16-ish. I kept myself remarkably sheltered and only looked into it when I became curious. And got over my weird hyper-religious phase. 

When I was about 12-13, I started to toy with writing myself, writing my own OC crossovers for Phantom Manor (the gother, European version of Haunted Mansion that was my special interest for. Ages). Carmilla when I was 17-18 was one of the first things I wrote a full, complete Thing for, even if I never published anything for it. And from there, I’d try to write things for both The Pirate Queen and Dracula, though both projects proved to be too ambitious and I ended up cutting them off, tragically, but they gave me the confidence I needed to get into 1789, which I DID publish something for finally, on the day I was taking my GRE because. Well. I had something else I feared more than a flame. 

51. Rant or Gush about one thing you love or hate in the world of fanfiction! Go!

I don’t know if this is one thing or five separate things in a trenchcoat, but here you go. 

I love how we can explore things that could never be explored in canon, for one reason or another; I love that we have an experience that we can filter according to what WE want, including trigger warnings, which is honestly a godsend to me. We talk a lot about the transformative nature of fanfic, and it IS, but also, the level of empowerment that comes with being able to take back a narrative that says “hey, you’re not supposed to be in this narrative” or “You’ll like what we put out and you’ll stick with it” or “Well, if you don’t like it, create your own” and say “Okay, I will.” And, obviously the comments are lovely, having that kind of instant encouragement, and in the small fandoms in particular, it’s VITAL, but I also don’t feel like they’re inherently mandatory or that readers should feel FORCED. But I do love that, no matter what, something you write can connect with someone from the other side of the world. Like, people can argue all they want about fanfic being valid or not, but MOST people who want to be professional writers never get that. And when you stop and think about how we’ve been changing the narrative for as long as we’ve had oral stories, that this is how storytelling was ORIGINALLY done...that’s very humbling.

Voltron Hospital AU

Okay so like a month ago I came up with a Voltron Surgeon AU and rambled to @damthosefandoms about it all night, but guess what I still want to talk about it so I’m just posting my headcanons here because why not 🤷🏻‍♀️ 

Some background: 

Heavily inspired by Grey’s Anatomy because I love it (at least until around season ten; I don’t watch anything after Derek dies and Christina leaves because I’m bitter) 

The paladins work at Altea Memorial Hospital 

Keith, Lance, Hunk, and Pidge are residents, Shiro and Matt are attendings, Allura is the chief of surgery, and Coran is the best nurse in the known universe 

The color of their scrubs changes depending on their specialty 

(Putting under a read more because this is pretty long) 

Shiro:

- Dr. Takashi Shirogane

- Head of Neuro surgery 

- Black scrubs 

- Lost his arm in a car accident with Keith during his residency that nearly ruined his medical career. His arm was so damaged from the collision that it needed to be amputated, but Matt made him a prototype prosthetic that wound up working 

- Was out for two years while he was learning how to use the prosthetic, but he eventually became able to do surgery again 

- Is continuously trying to come up with a way to surgically cure ptsd and trauma flashbacks for obvious reasons 

- Crushing hard on Allura, the chief of surgery and his work wife 

- That one surgeon everyone is in love with 

- MCDREAMY 

- “It’s a beautiful day to save lives” 😭 (listen if you don’t watch greys anatomy you prob won’t get the reference but it’s just,,, it’s what Derek always said before surgery)

- I can’t believe Shiro is actually Derek Shepherd who knew

- Was the paladins’ attending back when they were interns and trained them all until their residencies, so they’re really close 

- Shiro had always wanted Keith to go into the neuro field like him, whereas Keith wants to follow his own path. This sometimes causes conflict between them 

- Looks after the residents and comforts them whenever they lose a patient or have a bad day

- DOCTOR DAD

Keith:

- Dr. Keith Kogane 

- Trauma surgeon (so he mainly works in the ER and takes on all the emergency stuff and the more gory surgeries like when someone gets an arm chopped off or is hit by a truck) 

- Red scrubs 

- Shiro’s adoptive younger brother 

- He feels like he has to prove himself constantly because people assume he only got the job because he’s the neuro attending’s brother 

- Pidge’s bff 

- Worked on cars to pay his way through med school 

- Originally got into trauma surgery because he was there in the accident when Shiro lost his arm. Keith was fine besides some cuts and scrapes and a broken bone or two, but Shiro’s injuries were far worse. The worst was his arm, which was super messed up by the impact. It took a while for the paramedics to get there, so it was up to Keith to try and save the arm at least until they arrived because he couldn’t be the reason Shiro loses his medical career, but he cracked under the pressure and in the end, even with all his work to stabilize his arm, they still couldn’t save it and that’s why Shiro lost the arm and Keith will always blame himself for that 

- Kolivan is the trauma surgery attending and a major hard ass, and Keith is his protege  

- Was at the top of their class all throughout med school and he’s a natural with a scalpel 

- ✨ Ponytail ✨ can I get a hell yeah for Keith in a ponytail 

- “Patience yields focus” is his mantra for basically everything 

- Dropped out for half a year during their internships because of a patient’s death that hit him hard. He was performing his first solo surgery and everyone came to watch from the gallery because this was his big moment, this was his time to prove himself. It was supposed to be a simple appendectomy, but something went wrong during the operation. He ended up losing the patient despite working in a blind panic for almost twenty minutes doing CPR until Shiro finally managed to get him to stop and understand that the patient was gone, he had to let it go 

- The whole event really rattled him, and after scrubbing out of the OR he straight up left the hospital and no one saw him back there for months 

- He returned eventually due to Shiro’s coaxing, and in three months managed to make his way to the top yet again 

- Loves his trusty scalpel (you know I had to fit a thing about the knife in there) and he has it with him every time he performs a surgery. He says it’s lucky and has never performed a surgery without it since that first one 

- Shares an apartment with his bro Shiro, but rarely ever goes home because the hospital is his life. He spends most nights in the on-call rooms and is always up and ready to go whenever an emergency trauma comes in 

- Actually wanted to be a paramedic for a while, but in the end chose trauma surgery because it’s more competitive and intense  

-He is so bad at bedside manner and interacting with patients in general; he’s totally the Christina Yang of this au (also Alex Karev too because let’s be real HE IS) 

He’s really quiet and with patients he’s always distant—he tells them what they need to know about the surgery and that’s it. He just sticks to the facts and doesn’t make it any more personal than it has to be 

-He’s the guy who intimidates everyone without meaning to, so everyone’s kinda scared of him tbh. 

But overall he’s a great doctor and works well under pressure, which is why he’s so great for the trauma field 

Lance:

- Dr. Lance McClain 

- Lance works primarily in plastics (plastic surgery, skin stuff, transition surgeries, facial injuries, burns, etc) 

- Blue scrubs 

- He first got into the field because years ago he got into an accident and came out of it with burn scars all over his back and shoulders that he prefers to keep hidden. He specializes in burn injuries because of that connection 

- Hunk’s bff/roommate 

- Keith’s rival all during med school and their internship 

- He competes with Keith a lot over surgeries since Keith is trauma and Lance is plastics, so whenever a burn victim or similar case comes in they fight over literally everything  

- Flirts with all the nurses shamelessly 

- Super good when it comes to bedside manner and even better with kids

- Acts suave and cocky, but he really has a great heart and most of his confidence is an act to hide how insecure he is about his skills that he worries aren’t good enough even though he’s the best plastic surgeon in the state 

- During their internship, he and Keith competed for who would get the reward of performing his first solo surgery. Keith won in the end, and Lance resented him for it for a long time 

- Went into plastics because he likes getting to improve lives, being able to fix what other people can’t themselves. He takes pride in the fact that by doing what he loves, he gets to help people at the same time 

- This is a lot of why he clashes with Keith so much. Keith gets too invested in the surgery itself so much that he often forgets about the patient altogether, whereas Lance sees the patient before anything. He makes all his cases personal and tries to get to know his patients as well as possible so he knows what he’s working for. It makes him feel better about it all if he knows that when he’s finished, he’ll have changed someone’s life and that makes him feel really good 

- I can’t believe Lance is actually Mark Sloan in disguise who would have thought 

Pidge:

- Dr. Katie (Pidge) Gunderson, which is her mom’s maiden name that she uses as her last name, that way there’s not two Dr. Holts because that would be confusing 

- Cardio surgeon because she’s a badass 

- Green scrubs 

- She loves doing the more experimentational procedures with new equipment. Her favorite thing is coming up with new ways to advance the cardio field and make her own mark in the world of medical science 

- (Has to use a step stool during surgery because she’s too short to reach the table rip) 

- Her brother Matt works at the hospital as well, and they’re the ultimate surgery duo 

- Keith’s bff 

- That one doctor who knows everyone’s business and loves gossiping about other doctors with the patients 

- Steadiest surgical hands this side of the Mississippi 

- Once performed an emergency valve repair in the dark and they talked about her around the hospital for weeks it was awesome 

- “Why do you like cardio so much?” “Because I have no heart and operating on other people’s is satisfying” 

- So competitive when it comes to surgeries it’s not even funny. She’ll steal a surgery from right under you and you won’t even realize she did it until you walk into the OR later and find her already halfway finished with the surgery 

- Wears Heelies to work so she can skate into the OR like a cool person 

- She works fifteen hour shifts at a time and no one ever sees her go home or use an on-call room?? Does she sleep?? Is she a vampire?? Was she ever alive in the first place?? No one knows 

Matt:

- Dr. Matthew Holt 

- Matt is the ortho attending, so he specializes in bones 

- Gray scrubs (he doesn’t really have a color, but he wore a lot of gray-ish stuff in Voltron so I’m working with what I have here) 

- Bffs with Shiro and is the dude who strolls into the OR with a bag of chips while Shiro is in the middle of brain surgery to talk about Game of Thrones 

- Was the one who saved Shiro’s arm and got him the prosthetic after his accident. He was working in a medical trial for a new high-tech bionic arm, and he submitted Shiro’s name to be a candidate and he got picked 

- The one who eats everyone else’s lunches in the break room

- (jackson avery jACKSON AVERY JACKSON AVERY)

- The one who fills plastic gloves with helium and gives them to kids as balloons 

- Draws anime characters on people’s charts to make them laugh 

- “Hey why’d you go into ortho, Matt?” “I like shattering people’s bones and this is the only legal way to do it” 

- Plays the Actual Cannibal Shia LaBeuf song on a loop during his surgeries because he claims it helps him focus 

- *sings* ”STAB IT IN HIS KIDNEYYYY” *accidentally does it* “sHIT” 

- But really though, despite being a walking meme, Matt is the best orthopedic surgeon in the whole hospital he’s awesome 

Hunk:

- Dr. Hunk Garrett 

- Peds surgeon (So mainly he works on kids)(He started out med school wanting to go into anesthesiology, but he found he has a gift for pediatric surgery and switched and has been proud of that choice ever since) 

- Yellow scrubs 

- During medical school he was super squeamish and could barely start an IV without puking, but he eventually overcame that and became a fantastic doctor 

- Actual ball of fluff and amazingness 

- Most definitely has a teddy bear pin on the pocket of his lab coat why is this even a question 

- The best pediatric surgeon in the whole hospital and is recommended all over for his fantastic bedside manner and ability to put any patient at ease 

- He’s great with kids and super good at comforting the parents as well 

- Spends a lot of time in the NICU looking at all the cute babies and drags everyone else in there when they’re sad 

- Lance’s bff/roommate 

- Dating Shay, who’s the super sweet neonatal surgeon 

- Always carries around stickers in his pockets and gives them to sick kids to cheer them up. Also to adults who look like they could use a scratch and sniff dancing strawberry sticker because honestly who doesn’t 

- He gave one to Keith once after the guy lost three patients in one day and it actually made him smile a little. It was Hunk’s proudest moment

Coran:

- Coran Coran the Gorgeous Man is the toughest damn nurse in this whole hospital 

- Orange scrubs 

- He’s also Allura’s dad for all intents and purposes after her own father died 

- Also a war vet who worked as an army trauma surgeon years ago, but when he came back he became a nurse because it was a more rewarding field and he wanted to be closer to Allura. It was right after her father’s death, so Coran wanted to be able to help her more since now she has inherited an entire hospital to run all by herself 

- Knows everyone’s business because he’s the nurse whom everyone confides in, so he knows all 

- “That’s why his mustache is so fabulous. It’s full of secrets”

- Knows all the long-term patients by name and stops by their rooms every once in a while for exciting talks about his long treks across the desert with nothing on his back but a bottle of water and a cabbage 

- The head nurse and basically a mom to everyone in the hospital 

- Allura’s right hand man 

- His mustache is fabled to cure cancer just by looking at it 

- Doesn’t have time to remember all the resident’s names, so he has them ranked by height 

- “You know, Keith, you’re lucky Pidge didn’t take that offer to transfer to Hopkins” “Uh, why?” “Because then you would have been the shortest” “hOW DARE—“ 

-The backbone of that whole hospital and he knows it 

Allura:

- Dr. Allura Altea (listen she doesn’t have a last name so I’m working with what I have) 

- Chief of surgery 

- Pink scrubs that nobody else in the hospital has because she’s fabulous and she knows it 

- Actual goddess 

- Tough af and doesn’t take anybody’s crap. Don’t mess with Allura, she’ll make you do push ups in the middle of the ER if you even try it

- Has feelings for Shiro, but because she’s his boss, she tries to keep her feelings under control and stay professional so as not to cause any problems. For real though, they are absolutely work husband and wife 

- Her father Alfor owned the hospital until his death during what was supposed to be a routine heart surgery. His death was really hard on Allura and Coran, the latter of whom is now like a dad to Allura 

- Allura now owns the hospital as well as runs the surgical field, so she’s super busy. But it’s all good because she’s the best at running everything smoothly and she’s just so great okay 

- (Is it just me or is Allura just Miranda Bailey but even more radiant)(the answer is yes, yes she is) 

- Has four pet mice that used to be lab mice, but she got attached and now keeps them in a cage in her office
