Danganronpa Ultimate Categorization
Welcome back to another episode of: Jade is a nerd about something absolutely useless! Today's topic: Talent classification in Danganronpa/Fangans.
In the process of making my own fangan/s, I've created a classification system for the types of talents you can give characters. These classifications are...
Arts: Talents that are involved in the visual arts, performing arts, or fashion. Encompasses performers of all types, any type of visual artist, or anyone involved in fashion. (Ex. Actor, Abstract Artist, Model)
Practical: Talents that focus on a specialized skill or work with your hands. Also includes any talents that are religious or spiritual in nature. (Ex. Mechanical Engineer, Detective, Shrine Maiden)
Academic: Talents that are recognized by how much knowledge or experience a character has in an academic field. Covers most science, literature, math, and research based talents. (Ex. Chemist, Theologian, Archaeologist)
Sports: Talents relating to athletic skill. (Ex. Footballer, Kickboxer, Bowler)
Novelty: Talents given to a person who is special simply by existing. Can also be given to characters who win a contest for their talent. Includes Lucky/Unlucky Students, royalty, and non-human characters. (Ex. Lucky Student, Student, Princess)
This system of classification was based on my experience in the community over about three or four years, seeing many other people's original characters as well as creating my own. I found many fell into these categories. My "perfect" ratio, which my friends and I used as a guideline for making our fangan casts, is 4 arts : 4 practical : 4 academic : 2 sports: 2 novelty. I felt this ratio kept things even and grounded.
A few months ago, I began to wonder if my "perfect" ratio was more of my own creation than an actual pattern I saw. I thought, in the event it was, that I would come up with a mathematically accurate ratio that better represented the talent distribution of Danganronpa and its fan projects. This was my attempt at doing just that.
Data Collection
For this, I tried to collect as varied of a sample as possible. I included the three mainline Danganronpa games and sixteen fangans, ranging from very popular ones to very obscure ones. The fangans sampled for this analysis were...
Danganronpa Another
Super Danganronpa Another 2
Danganronpa Despair Time
Brave Danganronpa Coward's Paradise
Project Eden's Garden
Danganronpa He(art)less Deceit
Danganronpa Hushed Whispers
Danganronpa Muave
Danganronpa Despair's Revival
Danganronpa Re:Birth
Danganronpa Twisted Truths
Danganronpa Survivor's Guilt
Danganronpa Despair's Flame (my fangan! also the one where the talent ratio originated)
Danganronpa Cyberspace
Danganronpa Akeda Amusements
Danganronpa Lost Paradise (my other fangan that isn't released anywhere but I'm counting anyway)
I figured out the talent ratio for each individual game by looking through their casts and sorting them with my classification system. Ultimate ???'s were thrown out if possible (such as in the case of Akeda Amusements, where Hanari was thrown out due to the fangan having seventeen participants) and if not, they were counted as novelty.
Also, shout out to Yuki Maeda and Teruya Ōtori for managing to count for two different data sets despite my best efforts at finagling a way to keep them confined to one.
Observations
Tumblr media
The first thing I noticed in looking at the ratios for canon Danganronpa was that Academic ultimates are underrepresented compared to what I initially remembered. It had been a while since I revisited the mainline games, and it was a shock to be reminded of that. I was also reminded, but not quite as shocked by the greater emphasis on practical ultimates.
In fangans, the focus on practical ultimates continues to be heavy, with none having less than two. There was also less focus on sports ultimates, with the majority having only one or two compared to the three that the mainline games had a majority of the time. They also tend to have more academic ultimates.
I think that this could be explained by looking at the types of people who make fangans. The majority of people I know who make fangans have very particular knowledge about certain fields due to experience or heavy research, and more often than not these fields do not include sports. They are more likely to make characters based on their experiences and knowledge that they can then insert into the story to make it seem more authentic.
I also, unsurprisingly, found that my "perfect" ratio was not reflected in many of the fangans I looked at. There was only one besides my own that followed that ratio.
Tumblr media
Now, if my "perfect" ratio is not the mathematically perfect ratio, then what is?
According to the data collected for the canon games, this is.
Tumblr media
This just so happens to also be the ratio for Trigger Happy Havoc.
According to the data collected from the fangans, this is the perfect ratio.
Tumblr media
The only fangan that followed this ratio exactly was Akeda Amusements. V3 also had this distribution.
When considering both mainline and fan made games, the perfect ratio was this.
Tumblr media
Ironically, not a single mainline game or fan game followed this ratio.
Out of curiosity, I also calculated the standard deviation for each data set.
Tumblr media
Canon Danganronpa has little to no variation, conveying that talent ratios are quite consistent between games. The biggest variation would be in the novelty category, making sense as V3 scaled down the amount of novelty ultimates compared to the other two games.
Tumblr media
The fangans are shown to have a much larger variation. Though I can't be surprised by this, as perhaps it is an unfair comparison. The mainline Danganronpa games were written by mostly the same team and had less to sample from, while the fangans have not only a larger sample size in which to deviate, but many different writers that think differently about talent distribution.
Final Thoughts
In putting this all together, I found that my classification system, while not perfect in any sense of the word, has some validity to it. If I wanted to, I could definitely make some improvements to it (especially in distinguishing between certain academic and practical fields from novelty), but as of now it works perfectly fine as an aide in cast creation for me.
My ratio is also not perfect, which was an expected outcome. Really none of the ratios I found are perfect, with none of them representing more than one or two of any mainline or fan made game. While ratios like the ones I found can be good for making sure you have a balanced distribution of talents, they aren't required to make a good cast. Personally, I'll continue using my personal "perfect" ratio as a baseline for any cast I make in the future.
I also had a lot of fun making this, and hope I can find a way to make more posts like this in the future. Thank you for reading this.

on critical thinking (and Sayaka Maizono)
i think what happens a lot in Danganronpa, and with Fandom in particular, is that people assume the Problematic Narrative Issues most stories have ALWAYS exist. we end up so used to seeing the Annoying or Problematic thing we sometimes feel like it's there when it isn't. combine that with underused media literacy/critical thinking skills and it's often a recipe for misplaced anger and weird character interpretations.
as a random example: i see Sayaka's treatment maligned a lot as Sexist/Misogynist. it does look like that on the surface, right? she's the cute idol girl love interest, and she dies first in a selfish grab to get out of the school, attempting to pin Male Normie Protag for a crime he didn't commit. ask yourself, though: is this narrative Sexist, or have i seen similar shitty Snake in the Grass Succubus Harpy Girl Attacking The Innocent Bunny Man type narratives so much that i'm projecting? finding evidence of Misogyny that isn't there?
related questions, both in general and for this situation specifically:
how does this situation relate to the themes of the story, to Makoto's arc, to the arc(s) of the rest of the characters?
does Sayaka have depth? or is she just a plot device for Makoto and the others?
what about the rest of the women/femme-aligned folks in the Narrative? are they only there for similar reasons as Sayaka?
especially with something like Danganronpa (translated/localized), what is the original connotation of the text (if available)? are there cultural nuances i might have Missed?
what are other examples i've seen of this situation in other unrelated works? is it Similar? not really that Similar at all?
what might the writers have intended? what is/are their Background(s)?
who is the intended market/audience?
how long has it been since i've played the Game (or read the book, etc)? am i misremembering something from the Game?
related to the above, am i letting Fandom/Fanon/Chuds on Reddit color a lot of my perception because i haven't interacted with the canon in a while?
and of course, to reiterate my first point: have i seen this narrative done poorly so often that i expect it's always written poorly?
maybe you'll come to the Conclusion it's still sexist (or transphobic, or...), and that's fine. i'm not saying there aren't Bigoted and Awful bits of fiction out there that tell us everything we need to know about the author's shitheadedness. but always take a moment to think first.

30 Day Danganronpa Challenge but April is pretty far away and I can't slowburn for shit so here we go!!
Tumblr media
(Spoilers for the entire Danganronpa series, obviously)
1. HIMIKO!!!
2. Either Teruteru, Kazuichi, or Haiji. Genuinely awful people. (Hifumi is disgusting too, but at least he tries(?) to keep it to 2D only. I guess.)
3. All of them!! Yes, ALL of them!!
4. Definitely gotta go to Gundham. Considering he's one of the only good ones lmao
5. If she didn't get killed off in the first fucking chapter, Kaede would be an absolute lock. But Shuichi's good too, at the very least compared to the other protags. I would say Komaru too, but she called Haiji's creepy ass tendencies "attractive," so...
6. I had to think for a good minute about whether I could reasonably say I like any of the other characters that fit the antagonist mold than the obvious and overplayed. But. Fuck it, it's like they say! It's always Junko!
7. CHIYOMIKO!!!!!
Tumblr media
8. Straight ships in general tbh, but ESPECIALLY involving Hifumi, Teruteru, Kazuichi, or Haiji
9. You could not pay me to care about the interactions between two men
10. If I HAD to pick a favorite straight ship, gun pointed to my head and bombs strapped to my family and loved ones... I guess Saimatsu isn't the worst. Can I go now, Jigsaw?
11.
Tumblr media
12. See #7 UwU
13. V3. As long as I pretend chapter 6 doesn't exist
14. CHIHIRO!!!! 🏳️‍⚧️
15. HIYOKO!!!! 👘
16. HIMIKO!!!! 🪄
17.
Tumblr media
18. It's kind of a tossup between Ultimate Programmer and Ultimate Artist, as those are THE most important things to my goals of creating my own video games
19. Probably Gundham's for the emotional weight of it. There's just... something about seeing the Four Dark Devas of Destruction's reaction to the execution of their master that made me sad the first time I saw it.
20. If this is like favorite OST overall? Probably V3's anyway? But if we're talking favorite song... LET'S START THE KILLING GAME!!!
21. HIYOKO IN A HEARTBEAT
22. Gundham's, for the reasons listed in 19. He's also the only guy in the SDR2 cast that I can confidently say I like, so that also had part in it
23. The DR3 girl with the Pikachu hoodie and homophobia in her eyes
24. ALL OF THE GIRLS HONEST TO GOD. But surprisingly enough, I think I'd go with Hiyoko first and foremost cause I can see us starting so much shit together lmao
25. I'm gonna assume this is weak as in relating to the narrative, so I'm gonna go with Kurokuma. Like, did he even do anything? At all? I mean, it's been a while since I've sat through UDG, but I genuinely do not remember him contributing to anything besides half-baked comic relief
26. Gonna get controversial here. My candidates are Makoto, Ishimaru, Hajime, and Keebo. Whichever one makes people the most upset, that's my pick
27. Oh, y'all are gonna hate me for this one. Himiko. She had some GROWTH, she went through some SHIT, and she still lived to tell the tale. To any of y'all who say she didn't deserve it, I hope your favorite character in Kodaka's next project gets killed immediately.
28. Okay this one was actually easier than i thought it would be. Ibuki for sure! She lives and breaths the 2000s, how could I not wanna dress like her every day if I had the option?
29. Again, HIMIKO!!!
30. I'm starting to think there's a theme here...
-------------
And with that, my Danganronpa opinions are out in the open for the public to scrutinize every last detail of! Here's my faves made in Pony Town as treat for making it this far ^w^

The selfship that almost was: my ridiculous experience with Trigger Happy Havoc.
Spoilers for Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc, and the bottom part of this post (starting where you see Kaito's picture) has spoilers for DR V3!
You can absolutely laugh at me for this post. Shit gets wild.
I played THH I think 2-3 years ago? It's almost a year since I played SDR2 and I played DR V3 this year.
Some time before my little sister asked me to play THH (and to let her watch me play to see my reactions), I had already spoiled myself to Chihiro's death. I didn't know her killer, but the video I saw (it was so long ago I really dont remember which video this was) mainly talked about her gender in the game. Somehow I ended up picking up the detail that Mondo trained with her, but not that he was the one that killed her?
Anyway, so going into the game I knew I would like Chihiro but tried not to get attached because I also knew she would die, so I tried to see other characters I could like. If I had been less self-conscious (keep in mind my little sister was watching me play), I would have spent more free times with Hifumi. I tried to pick a more "normal" character, or at least more normal to admit to liking?, and apparently I don't know what normal means because I thought this was Toko.
Toko was mean, but I chalked it up to her being terrified of the situation and everything happening to them. How was she supposed to trust anyone in a "killing game"?! Of course she freaks out! Of course she hides in her room! Of course she has trust issues! Okay but none of this excused how mean she was, but maybe that was her defense for being scared? I could also relate to her not exactly being warm to the other girls in the game, and I admit my first impression of Aoi was petty and negative and I didn't trust her (sorry Aoi, this was unwarranted and stupidly biased in hindsight. I didn't like her because I had this impression about her being a "mean popular girl" -because she showed off her boobs I guess???- and the rest of the game threw me off so much I didn't really stop and rethink this assumption. That was a fail on my part. Thankfully I learned not to make the mistake with Akane). It's also funny that I thought Aoi was "too girly," considering that she's one of the only canon Danganronpa girls to wear something that isn't a skirt/dress, and she was in sort of a relationship with Sakura. First impressions aren't everything, as I would realize later come to realize with Toko.
I felt so bad for Toko, and I was annoyed at the time that we were playing Makoto because I wanted to play a girl character who was nicer to her, who was lesbians with her (yes, I had a crush on Toko. HAD. You can probably guess what made that crush dissipate.) I had this idea about writing a fanfic where my s/i would try to protect her "like she's my little sister," except obviously this was a lie because she didn't want to scare her away by admitting to a crush. In hindsight, this fanfic idea would have been hilarious. Assuming I actually could win Toko's affections, I planned on being a bit annoying and clingy (simping) but doing everything to prove I was keeping her safe, she would have been pushing me as far away as possible to avoid me becoming Genocide Jack's next victim, insulting me to get me to leave while I weigh every insult against the consequence of losing the only character I made a big connection with. Also, I know I would never be able to handle a tsundere insulting me the way Toko would, but I was considering working around that by having my character be desperate to latch onto somebody to be safer during the game, though I would still try to take on the role of protecting Toko. Is it wrong that it makes me laugh to imagine writing this and then having Genocide Jack kill me? XD
I had so much trouble picking out items I thought Toko and Chihiro (the two characters I spent free times with) would like, and my sister would get impatient with me if I reset to try to pick a better item to try to activate a cutscene. I only got three cutscenes with Toko, and none with Chihiro. It was pretty frustrating when I wasn't getting anywhere. I think I talked to Yasuhiro a bit too, because my sister asked me why I was spending so much time with Toko and I didn't want her to catch onto my crush (lol).
I figured Toko probably had a secret, but my idea of it was very simple. She was showing such a tsun side, and her backstories revealed how lonely and heartbroken she was, I figured that her secret was probably something sweet and cute to show her dere side. Since she struggled to be nice to people from her trust issues, maybe she was volunteering at an animal shelter, and had a pet she was very close to waiting for her at home. We'd get to see a picture or something. Her in a shelter uniform with the dog or kitty she was fond of. Something sweet like that. That was the image in my head.
And then Chapter 2 hit me like a ton of bricks.
Chihiro's death didn't shock me, though I was surprised it showed up so early. Oh well, at least I still had Toko to spend free times with! I should probably pick another character because again, my sister would get impatient if I just spent all my free times with one character (to be fair, my sister was like 14 at the time and we had limited times to play this game, I can understand.)
It's funny, this chapter had Byakuya acting even more obnoxious, and also introduced him being Toko's crush, so I was like "ah, my rival is a total jackass." Also, he seemed hella gay and not interested at all in Toko, so I wasn't too worried. When he told Makoto not to enter a room in the library and Makoto's just like "okay! :D" I had two thoughts: "Wow, Makoto is a dumbass" (this would become a running gag with me and my sister saying this), and "Byakuya is probably the murderer. Even if it's not this case, probably another one." And when Byakuya became more obnoxious in the trial, I was like "Oh, revealing you as the murderer and seeing your execution is going to be SO satisfying. >:D"
And then... he was one of the survivors!!!
Tumblr media
FREAKING.
Don't get me wrong! I laugh about it now. I'm laughing right now. Well played, Danganronpa. This game trolled me so much. I don't even hate Byakuya anymore, well I kinda do, but he's the character that's fun to hate. I don't seriously hate him anymore. I laugh about how ridiculously mad I got about this. Feelings about feelings are funny like that.
Speaking of which, I was even less prepared for the Toko twist because-
WHAT THE HELLL?!!!
Tumblr media
Poorly written multiple personality disorder, AND she was a murderer, but she wasn't even the murderer for THIS case?!! I guess I can't say the game was predictable or boring, but what the hell was this?!
Also, the scissors thing and that tongue...you cant. You cant. You cant say she's straight and obsessed with men and then give her all this lesbian symbolism, game. What are you doing? From this point on, Danganronpa was confused. Or maybe I was confused, I don't know. I was so very confused. I was still attracted to her, maybe more attracted to Jack now, but what the hell was this?!?! All the directions they could have taken her character and THIS is what they chose to do with her???!!
I like to joke now: Chapter 2 is actually the first double murder in the game. They killed Chihiro in the living sense, and they totally murdered Toko's character in the writing sense, in a way that I almost wish they had really killed her off instead. That would have been kinder to her than...this...
And I thought her big secret she was a volunteer at a damn animal shelter. Help me. 😭
It really did frustrate me, because even though she was very cruel I could relate to how cold and distant she was to everybody when she was scared, her trust issues, her clearly wanting someone to protect her and care about her but also being too terrified to trust someone enough to give them the chance to do that. I think you can see where I attached to Kazuichi for...the same exact reason, damn.
But honestly, Genocide Jack wasn't even the worst part of her writing from this point (shocking, right??!!)
No, the worst part of it was that the rest of the game, Toko would only appear every once in a while to simp over Byakuya. Literally nothing else (as far as I remember). And then she would disappear and in her place would be Jack.
Which, ngl, Jack was sexy and hilarious. I know I got like, one free time event with her. But still, she wasn't Toko! :(
It frustrated me to see this character get turned into an ableist joke. Any idea of a subversion, that maybe they were telling the player that they could consider Toko's perspective, that she had a sweeter side behind her scared, bitter self, that maybe the loser girl shouldn't be rejected by everyone... NAH! She's actually mentally ill and a freak! Let's just make fun of her mental illness and separate from liking her as much as possible! That's what it felt like playing the game after this, at least when I think about Toko.
My real favorite in this game, among the survivors, was Yasuhiro. I was convinced he would be the last victim, and I was so happy he wasn't. Bless him.
Tumblr media
I was happy to finish THH, I needed closure for the story even though it was frustrating to see characters I started to like dying almost immeadiately and having barely anybody I cared about still around. "So in the end" (to quote Sakura) I had mixed feelings about Toko, Byakuya, and Aoi being survivors (in hindsight I was judgemental and wrong about Aoi and my feelings toward her have become more positive since then!), but I was glad to see Makoto, Kyoko, and Yasuhiro as survivors. My sister wanted me to play SDR2, and I told her I needed some time to pass before I decided to take on this game. Before I agreed to it, she had to reassure me that it was so much better than THH.
I was so worried about Kazuichi going the same route as Toko, but I took a chance at trusting her, and throughout the game she constantly showed how helpful she was and how kind she wanted to be. It wasn't as much development as I would have wanted, but it was better than what happened with Toko. There was no character assassination like Toko.
I find it so funny that I fell for the "simp" characters, and for these two games it was before I found out they were the simp characters. For Toko, it was because she was "the weird girl." For Kazuichi, it started off being because of her appearance, and continued as we learned that she was smart (a mechanic!) and helpful (she gave a thumbs up!). Yes, that is actually what made me first fall for her. You can laugh. As soon as she gave a thumbs up I knew I could trust her. Yes, I am aware that that reason is absolutely bonkers, I dont care. I'm so happy I was right this time.
Tumblr media
^^^Look at this kind, helpful soul! I love you!!!
Tumblr media
^^Check out the family resemblance. This is her cousin, my cousin-in-law Kaito. Kazuichi and Kaito being cousins is my headcanon. I headcanon Kaito as the older cousin, even though that probably makes no sense timeline wise. Heck, none of DR V3 makes sense timeline wise, so I do whatever!
Also, the pattern continues, as I admit I have a crush on Tenko as well. It's not as big as my crush on Kazuichi, it sort of comes and goes for the time being, and if I ever selfship with her I want to get a better sense of her character before I write her into the relationship (I'd like her to be with me and Kaz, also I'm not sure if Chihiro being part of the ship is still in my canon or not), but I wanted to mention it at some point and it's relevant to this post. Tenko had great potential, and she got some development she deserved, though the death she absolutely did not.
I guess the moral of this story is that you can trust again. Sometimes that trust will be broken, but sometimes it will help you find love. You have to take that chance.
All the places I could have learned this moral and it was the Danganronpa series. Wild.

Note
I would like to throw in some "Tenko deserved better" to go with the "Angie deserved better". I see an excellent character within Tenko, because when she's allowed to interact with other characters besides Himiko, it makes for very good stuff. Tenko's developing dynamic with Maki in chapter 3 is the main example. But there just isn't enough if this in the main narrative of V3.
Tenko absolutely deserved better. Tenko's character is poorly written in a very different way from how Angie's character is poorly written, in that Tenko falls prey to what I would consider one of V3's biggest flaws on the whole.
A lot of people would recognize what I'm about to talk about as a sort of "Kankri Vantas-ing" of characters - a very particular type of strawman meant to represent people who critique the story, usually for lack of diversity or racist/sexist/homophobic content, and who are then derided in-fiction for doing so as a sort of "gotcha" to fans who dared to be critical of their media. Hermione's belief in House Elf rights from Harry Potter is another famous, somewhat subtler (and far more insidious) example of this.
This is something really, really hard to avoid in fiction that centers around commentary about audiences and bystanders. The Hunger Games is a famous example that avoids this really well - even the people who the Capitol is meant to be an allegory for will criticize it, because the thing they're being critiqued for (massacre of children for sport) is relatable enough for people to make connections to real world situations, but distant enough from reality that it isn't taking personally (amongst many other reasons the Hunger Games succeeds with this).
In fact, I would also argue that THH does an excellent job with this, too. THH does a great job of presenting itself as very straightforward torture porn, only to slowly reveal over the course of the plot that the excessive violence has been deliberately made so gruesome in order to be used as demoralizing propaganda, both to the participants being observed and to the people across the world who it's being broadcast to. The realization that the gratuitous violence was being used towards a cause brings on a whole new light to us, the audience, engaging with it, and forces us to think critically about how such violence could potentially be used to influence us in similar ways in real life. That's powerful! That's a statement about propaganda that shines a spotlight on us as an audience without accusing the player of some inherent moral wrong! That's good shit!
When V3 chose to separate itself from this messaging, that did not by itself create a worse story; however, the decision to replace this with watered down "liking violence is bad" messaging, complete with blatant double meaning statements where the joke is You Should Dislike Previous Danganronpa Titles, is a HUGE disrespect and general kick in the nuts to these previous conclusions.
V3 does a TERRIBLE job at separating its in-universe audience from its real-world audience. That is the whole plot twist of v3, that there is an audience proxy of you, and they suck. And between Kiibo crying "robophobia" to mock any diversity-related critiques, and Tenko crying "degenerate male" and purposely playing into The Predatory Lesbian stereotypes to criticize specifically gender and sexuality-related critiques...hoo boy. It Gets Grating. And having to peel past that to see the genuinely compelling character info underneath shouldn't be such a slog.

Shuichi gets kidnapped by the villain of the game and Maki and Himiko have to UDG their way to save him. And Himiko’s magic is real!
Ultra Despair Girls: Dangangronpa Aftermath
Tumblr media
I wanted to include Komaru and Toko on the ally's side but I also wanted to leave it to be able to match HOWEVER you interpret the V3 ending.
If you Beleive Tsumugi was telling the truth then the woman on the left Who i stole from a fanganronpa i've been meaning to make Is the Leader of Team Danganronpa and using Monokuma's she's taken the person she feels ruined all of her hard work: Shuichi. It's up to Maki and Himiko to save him. You occasionally get help from Citizens of the area and former DR fans who want to help them out, but some fans are bitter they helped Shuichi end DR, so they will hinder you.
You also will get hints and help from a mysterious woman with a keytar. (more on her when I talk about 'Game Play')
Since this is my AU, and I can do what I want. And I don't like V3's ending like it's good, but a bit unsatisfying as a fan
If Tsumugi is lying then that Woman is either A) a remnant who worked with Tsumugi, B) a Copycat or C) someone inspired by Junko. She was the Ultimate Gameshow Host and was planning on a Killing Game to hold After Tsumugi's before she was defeated.
I... Don't have a name for her yet. But she has a Monokuma-esque companion who helps her I call Ursagi. They lead an army of Monokuma's similar to the ones in UDG. As well as a few more variants. When the player first starts out these Monokuma's will be colored (like the Monokids) to match the Bullet effectively against them (though as the game progresses depending on your difficulty level they may mix up their colors).
In this version, I imagine you actually get help from Komaru and Toko who are leading the Future Foundation Efforts in the area (and have been officially hired by Future Foundation). Komaru will give you your gun/megaphone and instruct her team to help you upgrade it (you have to earn the trust of Future Foundation to get upgrades). Meanwhile, you actually talk to Toko/Syo for more story-related stuff. If you find something related to a V3 student or their relatives you take it to Toko who will access the FF database and tell you what they have related to the piece you brought it (and probably insult them). Meanwhile, If you find a hostage (like Rantaro's sisters) you can give their location to Syo who will either rescue them or send in her team (the former Warriors of Hope) to go get them.
You play as Maki for the most part. First with a knife and then with a gun/megaphone to defeat monokuma's. Your Ammo is limited but very effective against Monokuma's.
You can switch to Himiko at any time! But if her magic isn't charged you can only use her to get into small spaces and do parlor tricks (like releasing doves or smoke bombs), these can distract Monokuma's enough to get away. If you wait till her magic is charged (or get to a plot point) You can actually use REAL VERY POWERFUL Magic. This can be used to teleport to a shop, walk through a wall, or Heal Maki. But there are no 'recharge' drops to pick up, Everything about Himiko's magic is on a timer.
Throughout the story, you keep running into this mysterious Keyboardist who claims to be mute. Maki is very weary of her, especially since she seems to know more than she lets on about Maki and Himiko.
She's like Servant/Komeda in UDG but she probably isn't working for the Mastermind. If you run into her out of battle you can use Maki to question her. You won't get much other than a hint of where to head next or where a secret might be. Though in certain areas you may get hints about her past. She may see something and you actually hear her mumbling something about her sister.
Her keyboard can also defeat Monokuma's similar to the Megaphone. And she'll help you occasionally in battle.
All Boss Battles are based on Game Shows.
Basically my ideal version of the game would be Maki and Himiko saving Shuichi from a Game Show host.
Form here on out any questions realted to this AU will be tagged UDG:Aftermath

As someone who only watched ninjago the pilots, s1-2, s11, and the first few episodes of s8, I have like, a bunch of AUs...
Lol anyways.
1. House Elemental
Think about a movie/series where the main characters are not truly human, goes on fantastical quest for newly discovered heritage, and a sentient manor, this is it.
The EMs are 'regular people' and then they meet Lloyd, who is the sole heir to the Elemental Manor, and chaos soon ensues. Also Skylor's is hiding something, and Chad Chen (from the movie) exists, he's related to Skylor. Lar is also there as Kai and Nya's adopted sibling.
2. Kuasa Sekarat
Translates to endangered powers, where after the serpentine war and somewhere at the beginning of the elemental alliance vs the hands of time, the ninjago empire decided to go "Hey, these people with supernatural powers could kill us if they want to, let's kill them before that could happen! Surely nothing will go wrong."
Yah, we still have our current generation of EMs. And they are mad. Krux is also there and looks pretty youthful bc if Ray and Maya can, so can he fvk u, on a serious note he's there with our gang bc well, what's the point of ruling the realm that 'killed' your brother.
Kai and Nya isn't there with the other ninjas, they're somewhere.... a bit more lavish.
3. HEY!!
Based on the Indo WEBTOON "WEE!!", this is just a slice of life AU where there are no elemental powers and most conflicts are gone bc of (for example, the whole HoT fiasco and Morro running away), so Harumi isn't exactly evil, just a little shit. Also that one post where it goes "wouldn't it be fucked up if Krux raised Kai and Nya?" It's canon now except it doesn't have angst. But this AU still has angst.
This is getting long, if anyone wants more info, go ask.
4. Empire of Frost And Inferno
Infinite Eclipse type of AU where the main villain are kinda like Vex but they're more of a celestial simp rather than a vengeful bitch. Nya and the gang suffers, the descendants of the FSM are nowhere to be found. Help them.
Villain's names are Mentar and Purna.
5. Firebird
It's just a Kai centric fanseason rather than a whole AU in itself. Horsemen themed (but I almost forgot mid-way), there's a firebird as suggested by the title. Set after Seabound.
Basically the 'horsemens' (none of them even have horses) are a group of high statuses people who lives in a pocket dimension still connected to Ninjago (made by fire, water, wind, earth and time) somewhere before the birth of the Spinjitzu Brothers (and the time twins so that's why time is included). One of them has a 'crush' on Kai.
Kai meanwhile is just doing what he's been doing at the beginning of Crystallized, met the new ninjas, mentored said new ninjas, gets caught up in the whole horsemen shit, Ray and Maya are also there, and at the same time, the og is a ninjas goes and gets Nya back, Ninjago falls into chaos help them
Tox, Neuro and Shade are also targeted by the horsemen but idk.
6. Absurd Swap
I sent like two asks to @terribleninjagoaus but basically, it's an AU where the new ninjas are the og ninjas, no, the og ninjas aren't the new ninjas (they're somewhere in the main lore), in fact, Zane is still the same, mostly. There's also a very alive Morro sort of taking Lloyd's role (no he's not the green ninja, he just wants his dad (Wu) back)
Lloyd takes Harumi's role, except he doesn't revive people, and Harumi takes Morro's role by searching for the realm crystal to bring her parents back from the departed realm.
Crystallized and Legacy of the Green Ninja switched Timeline places, the Hands of Time also swapped, but not exactly the way it is expected.
Idk of I wanted to switch PIXAL's and Skylor's debut or they should stay that way. Also Seliel is there and is an elemental master, she just uses more of her chemistry skills than her powers.
7. Danganronpa AU
hopefully not the same as @jay-reid 's dangan AU, but then again I didn't add the Spinjitzu Brothers in the roster.
8. Sort of Evillious AU (idk name)
This is me just messing around with Ninjago's history and just giving more suffering to the current generation and the seven deadly sins (+virtues but they're mostly dead). There's seven onis of chaos, the Overlord os one of them and their name's Varita and controls sand for some reason. Also Nexo Knights crossover??
9. Royal AU
Inspired by the webtoon "I Wanna Be U", just royalty AU with magic and conspiracies and uh, fluff and angst mostly fluff???
10. ElementBot
It's just no powers ninjago, the other ninjago species that aren't not-sentient animals or even humans are aliens. Also they are children with elemental robots servants that gives them their elemental powers that they can, in fact, take off anytime. (Yes, this is technically a Boboiboy AU)
And that's it, just me and some classic cringe /lh

Ok so as expected, I did not finish drawing anything, so in honor of Celeste's birthday, here's me rambling about her character for far too many words. I’m not saying anything I say is canon at all, it's literally just my cringe rambling thoughts about her character
i will finish the drawing though i swear to you all
This isn't even correct, I just wanted to talk about some of the random moments in her free time events and stuff that imply that she’s not the person she says she is beyond just her having a different name and not actually being French, and I've thought way too much about it and it think it's interesting, so here’s some small details I’ve over analyzed about her character even though it definitely wasn’t meant to be that deep.  I may be cringe for this but at least I am free(?)
First of all, if you look at her interactions with other characters in the talent development plan events (TDP events), danganronpa s events (DRS events), and even her drthh free time events, it becomes very apparent that without the unusual situation of a killing game to distract you, she’s incredibly socially awkward. Like I nearly got secondhand embarrassment from some of her DRS events they are an experience. It’s really interesting because when I first played the V3 TDP events, and especially the DRS ones, by the second event I was just like “has she always been this awkward?” and no, she just is. I think the general chaos of the DR1 killing game made it less apparent, but her dialogue is written in a really awkward way, and she just kind of enters conversations to say and few lines that sound really rehearsed and sometimes are only kind of related and then she just vanishes from the conversation. It could be a translation thing, but given that her lines are also written that way in other translations, it seems intentional? Another interesting thing is how quickly her persona starts to break down when she’s unprepared for a conversation or one-on-one. Like in most of her DR1 free time events she’s telling him very rehearsed and polished stories (which are literally from real-life gambling manga, by the way) or having conversations that she initiates and therefore knows the topic of, but if you look at I think it’s her second free time event? The one where she really awkwardly talks to Makoto in the kitchen and within like 10 minutes ends up confessing that she misses the gyoza from her hometown and then immediately backtracks and says she thinks it awful while still admitting to liking it. I feel like that event in particular says a lot about her character, since I feel like the fact that she slipped up and broke character that easily or over something like wanting gyoza so soon into her events feels like something that should definitely point to her not exactly being the person she says she is. She also says it’s the one thing she’d miss from the outside world like it’s just kind of an afterthought like she didn’t want it enough to break character talking to Makoto because of it? That free time event is interesting because you definitely see a lot more of her real personality than most of her other free time events but I feel like people forget about it when it comes to how much of her personality is the persona she puts up.
And especially in the DRS events, half of them are people saying she’s weird and they don’t like her, or her getting made fun of by literal children, or that one event where Miu literally tells Mukuro to “Forget hanging out with that worthless loser and hang with a real hottie!” like Celeste isn’t literally standing right next to them and then Mukuro just responds by saying “I mean, like, I wasn't ever hanging out with Celeste, to begin with” and Celeste literally just stands there the whole time, that one was definitely something. Basically, my point is, there are actually a lot of instances of her being socially awkward in the games, intentional or not.
There’s also the fact that she would have had to have started gambling at a pretty young age, probably around 13-14, which is something that is not only incredibly dangerous but also literally illegal in Japan (even if it’s not illegal in the danganronpa universe, it would still be really dangerous for a kid). For someone that young to end up gambling in the first place, even if she had a talent for it, isn’t just something that casually happens, that’s something you only resort to if you’re really desperate, which I feel like should say something. Also, it seems to be implied* that her family was very poor, given that she was born in and presumably grew up in a big city and her liking gyoza because she had it as a kid, which isn’t known for being expensive or high class. (*Heavy on the implied, it seems to be the general consensus and it’s also what I assumed when I played the game, but I’m not sure if they were trying to imply that, so don’t take this as me claiming that is canon) Another interesting thing is a panel from one of the official mangas which seems like it implies that she was bullied in school, which would give her specific issue with being called a loser a lot more context since that's definitely something kids would call another kid rather than something that would have come from an adult. (I know it could possibly mean loser in the “loser of a game” context, but in the trial, it sounds like it’s being used in the insult context). Also, the fact that she is the only member of the 78th class who doesn’t have anything listed as the school she attended before Hope’s Peak might mean she never went to high school until she went to Hope’s Peak.
Other than that stuff, there’s not really anything else to go off of other than her kind of acting like someone who was bullied in the past and is trying desperately not to get bullied again, but this is already multiple pages and that’s getting too far into conspiracy theory territory/stop trying to justify your headcanons territory, so I’m not going to get into it, I could potentially if people want it, but it can be a separate thing.
Again, I’m not claiming any of this is canon or you have to have the same opinions, it is just my cringe ramblings so please don’t think I’m trying to tell anyone what’s right, I literally have no authority on this topic

I'm not the sort of person to ever really be annoyed by something popular or being more popular than some other thing(s) just because they're those things specifically and I very much prefer not to be, not big on the "being a hater is so cool" shtick that lowkey feels like a spinoff of 90s-00s edgelord shit even if it's an older phenomenon than that. But as a visual novel fan, I really wish the "general gamer sphere" would even bother to look at a visual novel that isn't Doki Doki Literature Club.
Excluding hybrid visual novels that often have puzzle related gameplay elements like Ace Attorney, Danganronpa, etc, one would be very lucky to find anyone not into visual novels even play something like Hunie Pop or Hatoful Bird or maybe an april fools joke here and there. It can be a very very mild level or form of frustrating, so mild that you question whether frustration is the right word but the feeling is still there. You just want people to enjoy the same medium that you do and give it a real chance instead of a "Haha, those japanese people (read in a racist tone that feels hardly different from saying a racial slur) sure are crazy and wild and silly and bizarre and horny and degenerate and..." that nearly every western shmuck company high up its own racist ass does.
DDLC is not a bad game by any means and nothing is its fault hence why I have nothing against it, its western gamers' and western developers' fault and their racism, but again, there's so many others that are translated that are officially translated even on steam alone and you just wish people would so much as try to look at them in some genuine manner and take things in without the inclination to scoff at everything and think that they're above it all in a way that reminds me of how people treat and understand modern and postmodern art but of course with more racism.

wait ur rantaro theories are delicious if u wanna talk more abt them im all ears...... :0
THANK YOU! :D I have two main endgame theories relating to his talent, the first I don't really like and the other I like better, here it goes.
This post got long so I'm putting the no spoiler banner here:
Tumblr media
THEORY 1: ITS ALL FAKE
okay hear me out, I can't stop thinking about the opening of drv3. Its like dr2's opening in that it hasn't really been brought up since and it has really alarming implications. This is all based off only what I remember from playing the opening in November, so I might be missing some things
Kaede didn't consider herself particularly talented before her memory was reset by the monokubs
Kaede didn't know what an ultimate was before the reset
Kaede knew who the monokubs were and was surprised to see them?
They were all in standard school uniforms before they all had their respective magical girl transformations
All this points to me that not only is whatever going on fake, including all the major plot stuff like the Ultimate Hunt, The terrible world event going on outside that I forget the name of, and Project Gopher. All made up for.. some. reason. It would also explain some of the more confusing flashback lights (like the one where they saw? their own funeral??) in that it isn't real.
This is further supported by the fact that Shuichi is supposedly the Ultimate Detective, the same talent is Kyoko. Are repeat talents really possible?
So in this case, Rantaro would not have an ultimate talent because NONE of them would actually have ultimate talents, and something really weird would be happening instead. I know in every danganronpa game the killing games are broadcast somewhere via the cameras, maybe its all a show? but why?
I'm not really a big fan of this theory. I really want them all to be ultimates because its honestly just more fun that way. If it was all fake, itd make character deaths like Kirumi and Gonta meaningless. and it'd also be a LOT of interesting plot points just thrown out as red herrings.
One thing that brings me hope that this isn't the case is the flashback where Shuichi was in some kind of big tank and had the thought "I want to die in here with everyone else" What would make him think that if its all fake? I'm not really sure. Unless thats fake too. You see the problem with this theory? LMAO
THEORY 2: THE ULTIMATE HUNT
This is the theory I'm more confident in and like way better than the other one. It goes like this:
All 15 students (Not including Rantaro) in the ultimate academy for gifted juveniles ARE actually ultimates. When the tragedy or whatever this world ending event is called started happening, they all got together to try and stop the apocalypse and save the world. Led by Kaito (as we found the plans in his research lab), they started the Gopher Project.
The Gopher Project unfortunately failed, and the apocalypse began. The general public blamed these 15 ultimates for the end of the world and wanted revenge. Cue the Ultimate Hunt. Here's where Rantaro comes in
I genuinely think Rantaro is the Ultimate Hunter. As in, both has the ultimate talent of hunting, AND is hunting down and killing ultimates. (He'd more accurately be called the Ultimate Bounty Hunter, but I really like the clearer double meaning of Ultimate Hunter.) It would explain why the design of his ultimate research lab looked like a warzone, and had a similar colour scheme to Shuichi's ultimate hunt flashback.
He was hired by some of the general public to help hunt down the 15 ultimates who failed to stop the end of the world. Maybe there was even originally a 16th ultimate working on project gopher that got taken out by Rantaro and the rest of the Ultimate Hunt?
All 15 (remaining?) ultimates felt not only the intense fear and paranoia from the ultimate hunt, but also deep guilt at failing to stop the apocalypse. So in the end they surrendered to the ultimate hunt and.. let themselves be put into the Ultimate Academy for Gifted Juveniles killing game. Rantaro also let himself be put to moderate? maybe? Maybe he was lying that he couldn't remember his talent at the beginning?
I guess in this case, Rantaro really was "the mastermind" although he wasn't controlling Monokuma. I don't really have any ideas accounting for how monokuma and the monokubs fit in here. Or what Gonta could've seen in the flashback light at the end of ch4. But this is my current Rantaro theory!!

♨✿✂✉?
i <3 the salt || accepting
♨: Have you ever made a public call out post?
Tumblr media
uhhhHHH i may have done wayyy back in the day but i cannot remember for the life of me if i did or not. if i ever had any bad experiences with people i just stopped interacting with them bcuz back then i was extremely non-confrontational. now i just kinda tell people to not be a cunt and point at my rules if they break any of them. if they carry on its bye bye
i don't tend to interact with them these days except for a like/reply to show acknowledgement (not that ive seen one for like. years.) but i do think they are important if someone is showing signs of predatory behaviour in the RPC
✿: What do you think about public call out posts?
heyyy this is related to. the other question
like i said i do believe they are of importance. sometimes i do think some of them are just like personal drama that has escalated / stuff that couldve been resolved with like a "hey knock that shit off" but again i havent seen one for a long time & don't even know if its common practice here to make one if someone is actually causing problems so? yeah usually fine and important, but be professional about it
✂: A fandom that you feel isn't open and accepting?
i feel like a lot of anime fandoms have shitty fandoms especially idk if its just me. like i dabbled in writing Danganronpa for a while and man the whole time i felt like i was genuinely walking on eggshells over absolutely nothing. i still do like DR (yes i know its not a great series & has issues i was a media student i do have critical thinking skills) but thats one fandom i'd be hesitant to try again
✉: A fandom that you feel is open and accepting?
sawnic....s on...sonic..... sonic the hegd
i can't overstate it enough but i love this fandom. yes the games and writing has been hit or miss at times & some fans really can never be pleased, but as far as the RPC goes this place is great and i love all of u

Introductory post
Wow
Uhm hi if you're new here and not from my insta or anywhere I promoted this hi! You can call me Clover (or Eli), I use he/him pronouns, and I mostly ramble about my ocs from my silly little story called Bell's Requiem.
What is Bell's Requiem? Bell's Requiem is a story about a girl (Lily), who, along with her classmates, get trapped in a danganronpa/hunger games type situation if they were set in 1800's France with a lot of historical inaccuracies such as: robots, magical abilities, and Carl. So anyways their teacher dies and her replacement (Felix) is like "Yea yall should js like kill each other" and nothing happens so he kinda does everything himself (or has his two robot goons do it). Idk a lot of people die. Felix also decides to give them all magical abilities for whatever reason but Lily simply doesn't get any (cause she's a loser). Then a few chapters in Lily meets Detective Malice, Detective Ruben, and Hatch. Lily is convinced Malice and Hatch are gay (and she's right). Yada yada lots of chaos happens the story isn't completed giggle Areas: There are three main areas that our main characters are allowed to roam:
The Academy (Clé Evolutionary Academy)
The Elementary School (Clé Evolutionary Elementary)
The courtyard (The single area separating the two schools, has a fountain)
Characters:
Characters you'll commonly come across me doodling on here (and their identifiable traits) are:
MALICE (blonde long hair, mostly in a ponytail, trust me you'll get familiarized with him)
(For newcomers I am obsessed with this man it's actually a health condition)
Lily (blonde braids)
Hatch (red spikey hair, goggles)
Felix (brown hair, green eyes)
Surveillante (she's quite literally all white, like paper)
Monde (he's all black and white)
Carl (the only one with bright pink hair)
(idr who else I draw, I'll introduce them at some point)

Welcome to my writing blog! I decided to make a separate page for me to promote my fanfics and to post tumblr exclusive fanfics, along with other writing related posts.
My main blog is @manicmushroomforest , my likes/follows/interactions will come from there.
I am currently open for requests, so feel free to send me an ask or a DM and I'll get to you as soon as possible!
Something to know about me is that I have executive dysfunction and what that entails for me is that my updates are slow, but trust that I will be working on them when my brain allows me! Something also to know about me is that I may sometimes indent paragraphs often, I do this so that it's easier for me to process so I apologize if that isn't something you like. Lastly, while yes I do write Reader fanfics, I will never use y/n or any other variations. I just find them personally distasteful and too reminiscent of 2010 to 2016.
As for any requests, if I don't get to your request(s) right away, please know that I am not ignoring you, it's probably most likely that I just have not yet finished it, or have not yet started. I also reserve the right to ignore any requests I am not comfortable fulfilling and/or cannot write.
If you are someone who likes behind the scenes updates about your requests, my DMs are open, I'm more than willing to share with you where I am in the creative process with your request. I know that not everyone likes to be open about the fact they're the one making the request, but I just want to leave it as an option.
Here is a list of fandoms I plan to write for/have written for already
(The ones bolded in red are fandoms I already wrote fanfics for)
My Hero Academia
Doctor Who
Miraculous Ladybug & Cat Noir
Genshin Impact
Danganronpa (Excluding Despair Girls)
Death Note
Demon Slayer
Hunter x Hunter
Seduce Me: The Otome
Overwatch
Black Butler
Marvel Cinematic Universe
This is most of them, but I may add more in the future if I can think of any.
For specific source media, I may make separate posts about what I can/can't write about/for/involving/etc. if I feel I need to.

Top 5 Media Experiences of 2022
???
???
???
Dar Williams
lord-radish
I'm changing up the formula of the list. The switch to lord-radish is complicated, but it was probably one of the more influential things to happen this year. Also, after writing my previous post, it became clear that I've put a lot of stock into a future with this username. That's a big thing.
It just doesn't match how I like to express myself in these lists - it's important, but it's also padding to get the list to five entries. I don't regret talking about it and it was an important shift to make, but it's just not my speed. But then because of its wider impact, I don't think it should be ranked lower than something like playing two DanganRonpa games this year, even if I'm far more enthusiastic about those games than about the username change.
I don't want to put it at #1 because I don't feel that strongly about it, but it feels uncomfortable to rank it low. So this year's list isn't in order of enjoyment or importance. It's just five important/enjoyable things that happened this year, mostly because I only have five things to talk about after stretching myself really thin and partially to keep everything on a level playing field.
So now that I've written three large paragraphs of house-keeping to explain some arbitrary system I've decided to implement into my incredibly long, personal blog posts about immensely specialised media experiences - how about that Dar Williams, huh? The musician whose songs I would post entire verses from whenever I made a post about her music?
Every year's list has a musical act on it, and this year was no exception. It was a less successful experiment this time around - I stopped using Spotify back in January, and Dar Williams was a bit of a personal one-hit wonder I found on there with her song Iowa. If I don't return to Spotify, this may be the last artist from that period of time that I check out.
Some bands are singles bands to me - I really, really like a brief slice of Coldplay songs for example, the really slow and sappy ones from the mid-00's. I don't care about anything before or after then, Hymn for the Weekend onwards makes me feel like crawling out of my own skin teeth-first (whatever that's supposed to mean). Other bands hook me in with their whole discog - The Mountain Goats, Elton John, Counting Crows etc.
I adore at least three songs from Dar Williams. But by George, I couldn't go the distance with her entire body of work. It's a bummer, but it's true.
I'm not going to talk about why, because there's no specific reason outside of some songs connecting and the rest not connecting. What I am going to do is elaborate on why that small handful of songs meant so much to me this year.
---
When I Was a Boy: iconic song about gender politics. There's a real sense of loss to this song, being held to values that you don't agree with based on something as irrelevant as your birth sex. You spend years being a wild, all-loving gremlin with everything in common with the opposite sex, then the clothing you wear is made with other people's enjoyment in mind and being emotional becomes a sign of weakness and otherness.
The narrator is a woman who feels increasingly locked away from the sort of person she actually is - physical, active, curious and louder than life - due to the values forced on her via womanhood. And as much as she's had to submit to this image of womanhood that's robbed her so much of her childhood spark, she realises that her male partner can relate strongly - he'd always speak to his mother, and he'd pick wild flowers until he hit a threshold where he was expected to "be a man". After years of social conditioning, he can barely cry even when he's on his own. The narrator was a boy once upon a time, and her partner was a girl. She was just like him, and he was just like her. And there's a real, tangible sense of loss in that.
The Babysitter's Here: this one is an overwhelmingly glib, twee song that I wouldn't recommend super highly; it's a bit embarrassing to admit to liking. The core instrument is a very small, tinny-sounding xylophone. But on her debut album, this was a highlight.
It's a story from the perspective of a 5 year old and a babysitter she idolizes, and it's very bittersweet in how it depicts the titular character's choice between going to college and staying with her boyfriend. The narrator doesn't understand, she's a five year old kid, but she tries to help. It's sweet.
Iowa: I have a spotty history with country music, as many people do. I grew up listening to Slim Dusty, who I don't like. I also grew up in the heyday of bro country and songs that played up the southern drawl and sang about planting spuds and shittin' in yer britches. All the respect in the world for Slim Dusty as a guy and a performer, but I have a vehement hatred for every country song I heard for 15+ years.
Iowa is a song that sounds and feels like a country song I would hate - moreso in the Slim Dusty camp than Bro Country, with its very twangy and down to earth sound - but cracks through that shell with detailed, emotive lyrics that speak to me very deeply. The chorus sounds like a yodel for fuck's sake, and I buy entirely and wholeheartedly into it because this song sells it.
I could rattle off line after line from this song that cut me to the quick every time, but I'll show restraint in posting one of them: "but I fear that to fall in love with you/would be to fall from a great and gruesome height". On its own, it probably sounds a little flowery and hacky. As an excellent one-liner in a song that hits every evocative lyrical beat like it on the head? It's one of the most relatable things I've ever heard in a song.
February: I have written essay-length posts about this song. It's less than four minutes, and it weaves a direct, detailed narrative about anger and denial and giving up the ghost. I would call this song a masterpiece - Iowa too, because I'm greedy like that, but February first and foremost.
It reminds me of how I treated my former best friend for years because I didn't like him for a long time. I removed access out of anger and not wanting to be there any more, I went into denial about my anger even as our incompatibility gnawed at the back of my mind for ages, there was a breaking point where the denial faltered and the relationship fractured - and the last part of the song hasn't come true yet. That's not a level of applicability I can get out of just anything.
This entry was only going to be about this song to begin with. February was a huge balm for me this year, and I admire its structure and its storytelling.
Calling the Moon: ending on something a little less intensive. This is the most recent Dar Williams song I've heard, and it lives up to the title - it's very chilly and sad and distant. I should make a playlist about like cripplingly lonely songs about the moon, this song would be on it as well as I Wish I Was The Moon by Neko Case.

Thank you for bearing with the long length of this post. I have to say, Dar Williams didn't end up being a Rachael Yamagata or a Maria Mena for me. But the songs I enjoy of hers are really, REALLY good.
