Happy WIP Wednesday!! Wierd Kryptonian bonding rituals please 💕

“I’m not being mind-controlled, guys,” Clark says, mildly offended by the suggestion. His baby would never mind-control him. “He’s my kid.” 

“And I’m not a teenager, I just look like one,” Superboy adds helpfully, darting down to grab Lois’s lunchbox off the roof and then ducking back behind Clark to peek inside it. “Actually, I’m like, one?” 

“You’re only one year old?!” Lois asks in horror. “Oh my god, Superman!” 

“No, no, one week old,” Superboy clarifies, already having stolen her sandwich and taking a bite of it. “Though I actually just woke up for the first time today, so maybe I should only count today? So one day old, I guess. Almost.” 

Lois stares up at him. Jimmy is visibly and desperately resisting the urge to grab his camera. Clark’s just relieved to find out his kid hasn’t been running around alone and unsupervised for too long. He could’ve gotten hurt or lost or something. Or run into another Ivo or Task Force X, maybe, which is an awful thought. 

“Are you a secret government-funded clone created in an evil lab by dubiously-ethical scientists?” Jimmy asks, practically vibrating in place but clearly trying to be cool about this. Clark appreciates the effort. He doesn’t want to overwhelm Superboy or anything. 

“No,” Superboy says. 

“Thank god,” Lois mutters under her breath. 

“Yeah, I mean, you guys and the cool chili fry chick and those creeps I tossed in the dumpster all know about me, so I’m not a secret,” Superboy says reasonably, still munching down the last of Lois’s sandwich. “Duh. What’s that? Can I have it?” 

Jimmy promptly hands over the little two-pack of Tastycakes sticking out of his lunchbox. Clark appreciates that too.

Jason blinks away the last vestiges of sleep from his eyes; knuckling the grit away from one. He pushes up, using his phone to check the time.

An hour from his last glance.

Jason probably snagged a good half hour there, then. Maybe a little more. His back probably isn’t going to thank him. The couch they installed in Tim’s Perch is comfortable, but… it’s still a couch. Which Jason is really much too large to be crashing on.

He glances Tim’s way—and sighs. Still at the computer. How are his eyes not screaming at him? It’s been five hours now.

Honestly. Jason is starting to feel a little neglected.

And concerned.

Well. He can easily fix both of those things. He stands. Stretches. His hip pops, a small twinge of pain making him grimace a little. He kneads it with his fingertips on his way to Tim.

Tim doesn’t notice his approach. He does notice when Jason plops into his lap. Well— Jason sits a lot more gingerly than that; he’s still nervous about putting his full weight on Tim, despite Tim proving time and again he can handle it, and it doesn’t bother him. He likes it, even.

Anyway.

Jason settles in Tim’s lap, and Tim blinks at him, wide-eyed. It’s cute. Jason can’t help but kiss him briefly. Tim flushes pink.

“Jay…?” He cocks his head like a little bird.

“I’m bored,” Jason announces. “Entertain me.”

Tim’s lips quirk. “Weren’t you just telling me this morning your pile of unread books was getting out of hand?”

“Yeah. And?”

Tim lets out a soft huff of breath, accompanied by a sparkle in his eyes. “I’m working.”

“You’ve been working all day. Leaving me to languish, alone, starved of affection—“

A real, actual laugh. This time, Tim grabs his face, pulling him in to kiss his cheek. Jason sighs happily.

“When I finish this,” Tim promises.

“Mm… no. Now.” Jason nuzzles noses with him. “Kisses. Then you have to eat with me. You can work after that.”

Tim hums. One hand settles where Jason’s shirt has ridden up; fingertips tracing patterns on the exposed skin there. Now that his attention isn’t absorbed by work, Tim looks tired.

Jason isn’t afraid to take advantage of that.

He kisses him sweetly, then nuzzles his cheek, staying there, breathing in the scent of him. Tim’s other hand settles on the back of his head, threading Jason’s curls around his fingers.

He feels Tim sigh—not in defeat but contentment, turning just enough to smear a kiss over Jason’s cheek. “Kisses,” he agrees. “And then lunch.”

Jason grins in triumph, and pulls Tim into a deeper, more open-mouthed kiss.

He can probably talk Tim into a nap, too. He can be very persuasive.

9. your favorite book of 2020

i can't remember what year i read most of my books, let alone years back, but upon some googling my dark vanessa by kate elizabeth russell was originally published that year and since i love that book, let's just say it was that one.

will say though for anyone considering reading it that as a warning, the ending isn't what most would find satisfying but it did make sense to me.

22. your favorite thriller

i don't read thriller as often as i would like to, to be honest. i usually get distracted by books from different genres (namely historical fiction). always open for recs though!

in the future for this genre i am looking forward to reading the paris apartment by lucy foley. i've been told that it's good.

25. a book by your favorite author

perhaps the easiest question i've ever been asked in my 20+ years of life. without a doubt this would be in the dream house by carmen maria machado. i've recommended this book + author countless times on my blog and irl for good reason; carmen is a master of her craft, and this was such a raw and intensely honest memoir.

there's a long list of content warnings as it dives deep into domestic abuse in a sapphic relationship so for anyone who would like to read it, please take care to check that ahead of time.

i think it's the most important thing i have ever, and will ever, read.

48. your favorite sci-fi novel

without a doubt this would be into the drowning deep by mira grant. this is about terrifying mermaids and sisterhood and is soooo atmospheric. it's a follow-up to the author's novella rolling in the deep, and i do think it needs to be read in order. lots of horror elements too. overall it's just a really enjoyable book.

i think i actually have a pdf of into the drowning deep saved somewhere on my laptop and can send it to anyone who would be interested.

85. your favorite book about magical realism

it's been a while but i want to say that the gilded wolves by roshani chokshi was magical realism??? possibly??? it was found family + heist + paris, 1889 + magic with a beautiful and diverse set of characters and touched on issues like ableism, anti-semitism and racism.

honestly just talking about it makes me want to reread it. i still need to get the sequel dkfj

really upped my standards for ya.

89. a book that disappointed you

...i don't like holly black's the cruel prince at all. i wanted to, but i couldn't get into it. i think she's a talented author though! this one was just a miss for me.

124. the book you're currently reading

house of hunger by alexis henderson.

this is a sapphic retelling of the blood countess; it's been described as kinda vampires, but not really and... yeah that's really what it is. it has the vampire aesthetic; one of the main characters has her teeth fashioned into a vampires' fangs and she drinks blood. but she's not a vampire. you know how in the past some ppl thought drinking or washing yourself with someone's blood was thought to be a cure for ailments or like. a fountain of youth type of situation?? that's what's happening here. very gothic and atmospheric and i am already planning on buying henderson's other book, the year of the witching.

Mario Kart Idea : Baby Park 2

okay so my main idea was to create a track where you're constantly going into traffic.

basically you need to do this double figure 8 3 times, but in the mean-time you have to survive the intersections. item boxes will be placed on both sides of the circle, essentially reloading you before you go head-first into oncoming traffic.

this will be the worst mario kart course ever if made.

someone probably said this already but in spiderverse i think it's interesting how when pavitr was first introduced everyone thought something bad was gonna happen to him bc of how confident and optimistic he was. and then in the actual movie we see that something bad was supposed to happen to him (police chief dying!) but it doesn't! miles stops it! and miguel berates miles for this, says it's going to cause the universe to collapse or whatever.

there's this idea that tragedy is inherent to spidermans growth, and while it's true that some spiderpeople learn important lessons through loss, no one stops to ask, is it really necessary? yeah, maybe the chief was supposed to die. but why does spiderman have to be formed through tragedy? why do we (as heroes) have to let people die? pavitr didn't lose anyone, and he's still a good spiderman! maybe, if he doesn't suffer, he'll end up better off for it!

so while miguel is arguing for all this big picture stuff about saving the multiverse he's lost sight of what it really means to be a spiderman, he's not looking out for the real individual people. yeah it's just one person who would die, but that one person means something to someone. shrugging and saying "stuff just sucks sometimes, we can't do anything about it" is the opposite of what superheroes do. pretty obviously, miles arc is also a reflection of the struggles people face in real life, working within unequal systems, where it's easy to shrug and say "that's just the way it is" and not ask "but why does it need be this way? can't we do something about it?"

miguel is arguing that you can't have your cake and eat it too. presumably, miles and co. are going to find a way to get around that and change things for the better (and maybe that's why miles has that line about two cakes in the advisors office!)

WIP excerpt for this-was-a-terrible-idea; Jackson Kyle shows up in Gotham.

“I’ve met a lot of Superboys,” Jackson says, back to the bitter smile. “And a Supergrrrl, too. I was the only one who . . . wasn’t.” 

The only one whose Tim Drake was dead, Bruce can’t help but suspect is the actual end of that sentence. 

Unless . . . 

“Except for Black Zero, obviously,” Jackson says, and that bitter smile twists. 

And he still doesn’t look at Tim. 

Bruce watches Jackson in silence for a long moment. Jackson doesn’t fill the silence himself. Seems perfectly comfortable in it, in fact. 

He can’t imagine Kon ever being the same. 

“B,” Tim says warily. “This is . . .” 

“Black Zero is neutralized, to the best of our reality's knowledge,” Bruce says. More intel that’s not worth holding back right now. 

Or he's compromised and saying too much. That's less likely, but not something he's ruled out. 

“Kinda figured that when he didn't come back and conquer us, yeah,” Jackson says, wry and humorless. “It was a fucking mess to clean up, though. Not that it matters anymore.” 

Bruce thinks of that code phrase delivered at his front door and tactile telekinesis moving the hands of his study clock to a very specific time and just barely refrains from making the point that they'd bought the people of their reality a little more lifetime, if nothing else. He doesn't actually know how Jackson's reality ended, for one thing. Doesn't know how long it took, or if it was a direct result of Black Zero's interference in it. Doesn't know anything about it at all. 

He should ask. He will ask, obviously. 

But right now, he just keeps thinking about the way Jackson had first looked at him when he'd opened the door to him on the step. 

I fucked up real bad this time, B.

So Bruce knows better, but he still doesn't ask yet. 

“Relevant concerns?” he asks, and says nothing about Paul Westfield or anything related. That's . . . a secondary matter, for the moment. If that. 

Jackson's eyes unfocus briefly, and go just a little dull. 

“No, sir,” he says. “Not to you.” 

Bruce . . . pauses. Waits. Jackson, again, doesn't fill the silence. 

“Relevant to who, then?” Tim asks warily. Jackson doesn't answer him again, either because it's not protocol or because he doesn't want to. Bruce . . . 

He has questions, still. 

He has concerns, still. 

“Why not relevant to me?” he asks, which is a very different question, and Jackson's expression doesn't so much as flicker. 

“My status doesn't matter to you, sir,” he says, as even and toneless as any devastation of a report that Bruce has ever given himself. 

Bruce doesn't think about the pearls. 

“But no injuries to report?” he clarifies, because he's not going to insult Jackson by pretending that wasn't, arguably, the truth. At least the way Jackson clearly meant it, anyway. 

“No injuries to report, sir,” Jackson confirms tonelessly. He said that before, so it's not a surprising response.

But that phrasing might not mean “no injuries”, Bruce suddenly finds himself aware. 

“So you're uninjured?” he checks, and Jackson–pauses, momentarily. Like he might be about to lie. 

Or like he might just be surprised to be asked that. 

“Yes, sir,” he says, his voice a little stilted. “I'm uninjured.” 

The kid stripped down naked in front of him for the decontamination showers, Bruce reminds himself. No blood or bruising or swelling was visible. Color’s within their version’s normal range. No visible injection sites. A scattered scar or two, same as the faint one splitting his eyebrow, but nothing more notable than that. 

Not that any scar on a demi-Kryptonian isn't more notable than usual, of course. 

Much, much more notable.

wingfic is a fic i've been meaning to write for... a *while*. when i saw "wing" as the day 1 prompt for jaytimweek i,,, was like. "might as well!"

i. haven't started it yet.

well that's not true, i DID write the first line for a separate ask game. but, um. other than that i haven't started it xD

it's very loosely based on this fic for the Lucifer Netflix show.

the very basic premise is: jaytim + wingfic + touch-starved. the slightly less basic premise is:

everybody has wings. wings are high maintenance, and so people tend to have their flocks assist in grooming them. this doubles as a social/bonding activity.

jason, however, does not have a flock. he gets by with showers and his own hands, and it's fine. it's fine. his feathers are a little messy and maybe not as well-oiled and protected from rain as they could be, but---whatever, he's getting by.

and then <3 he breaks a blood feather (/pin feather) <3 which is fine, yknow, normally. but it's in a spot he can't reach, and there's the potential for it to keep bleeding. so he needs someone to help remove it.

the only person in gotham that he trusts is tim. and while removing the feather, he also offers to help jason groom his wings. things get... emotional <3

this one is based on a prompt from @deepwithintheabyss, who also offered me another ship, but like. i've read all the bruce/catherine fics in the tag, so... i might as well write one xD

i only have a little bit of writing for this one, BUT i came up with a whole meet-cute premise for them dfghj:

They met in a bookshop. Bruce, having newly taken in Dick (12), was looking for parenting books. Catherine was buying a birthday present for Jason (7). At the register, she fell just short of buying the books she'd picked out, and Bruce covered the cost. She insisted on paying him back, and since Bruce didn't want her money, she invited him over for dinner.

It goes well despite Jason's wariness, and they have a few more meet-ups. Bruce asks her for parenting advice. She didn't recognize him as Bruce Wayne at first, but eventually puts it together and feels foolish. He assures her.

They slowly fall in love, and finally, Bruce asks her on a date.

by the time the fic starts they've been dating quietly for a few months <3 here's the beginning:

Some days Catherine can’t quite believe this is real. It feels like something out of a fairy tale, or the romance novels she loves. A billionaire who falls in love with a woman on the verge of destitution, whisking her off her feet. He has been nothing but good, and kind, and gentle; everything Cathy has always wanted. Most importantly—he treats her son well. Jason, her sweet boy, has been so distrustful, rebutting many of Bruce’s attempts to bond. Bruce is patient. Understanding. He treats Jason with the same consideration and compassion that he gives to Dick… and to her. That’s why they’re here now.

i LOVE The Kane Chronicles!! i should reread it tbh. Rick came up here sometime before or around the release of Son of Neptune and did a signing and he signed my copy of The Red Pyramid but i LOST IT. i have NO idea where that book is and it haunts me 😭

also, about tsats, do i need to read all of toa first? i only JUST finished The Hidden Oracle last week (which is hilarious bc the bookmark i was using was the original receipt from when i bought the book in 2016)

oh i'd be heartbroken if i lost a signed copy of a beloved book i think i currently own like?? 11 signed books and they are very prized possessions

i really should reread it too!! i never really understood the hype of rick as an author back then, but in middle school a friend had the red pyramid on her shelf and told me not to give it back until i finished it...which took two days and then i suddenly got why ppl enjoy his work--- they're so silly but i love it

i don't remember a lot of that series but if i recall correctly the main character's sister---- sadie??---- was in a relationship with anubis and quite literally that really blew my mind and my love for them explains so much abt my reading tastes today

i do definitely think you should read all of toa first just bc of the setup and some stuff is referenced without a lot of context --- jumping in without finishing those books would be like only watching the pjo movies (skipping the books) before you read HOO

i think katsuki just answers his phone by barking out, "bakugou." no hello, probably doesn't even look at the caller id LOL when he hears it's you, though, i think he breathes out the tension he didn't realize was coiled in his shoulders, and says a lil, "hey," 🥺🥺

and i think when he calls you, and you answer with your sweet, "helloooo ??" he is so soft 😌 just mumbles out a quiet, "what'chu doin'?" and listens as you tell him, before saying what he needed to 😌
