At Fotografiska in New York City, Miles Aldridge has 50 pieces of work installed under the title “Virgin Mary. Supermarkets. Popcorn. Photographs 1999 to 2020.” From the second one walks into this exhibition, one is immediately entranced by the vast amount of colors that are in each piece of work. It is clear that Aldrige has an eye for a diverse range of colors that make the photos as iconic as they are. Between the portraits, nudity, and overall ambience of the exhibition, Aldrige was able to transform an ordinary room into a hallucinogenic trip. The photos I enjoyed the most were on the bigger side, approximately 2 feet x 2 feet. I enjoyed the way the bigger pieces took up my whole vision and helped me imagine myself being in the scene where the photos were taken. One critique I would give to Aldridge was about his pieces on housewives. Aldrige had a collection of about ten pieces that depicted housewives, all of whom looked unhappy while performing their “motherly duties.” While I enjoyed these photos and found them amusing, I believe housewife pieces are mainstream and know Aldridge could have come up with a better concept. Nonetheless, I have not been so riveted by an exhibition in a while. Aldridges work was truly inspiring due to its uniqueness, along with his clear passion for his work that one can see through his pieces. Another way Aldridge made his work pop was through the use of background colors. Each wall was painted a deep red or blue and this helped make the photos even more interesting. Lighting was only set on the photos, so the dark room had a certain ambience that worked for this series. The two photos from this exhibition I chose were Aldridges self-portrait and a photo of a woman with her eyes rolled back as she laid on a crown like throne. Both photos had dark red backdrops along with red pieces on both people. In the self portrait, Aldridge has red socks in combination with a red carpet and striped red couch. In the other photo, it shows a woman with red lipstick as she lays on a red backdrop. Both photos show odd actions taking place. Aldridge is pouring a glass over his head, while the woman has her hand on her chest as she lays with a facial expression like something profound has just taken place. These photos are the epitome of Miles Aldridge and his photographic aesthetic. Between the beauty of the colors and the oddness of the actions occurring, Aldridge is able to make photos that are eye poppingly perfect.

Reebok and Illumination presents “Minions: The Rise Of Gru” Collection
the Minions x Reebok collection injects inspiration directly from the forthcoming film that chronicles the untold story of one 12-year-old’s dream to become the world’s greatest supervillain
In partnership with Illumination and global cultural phenomenon, Minions, as well as Universal Brand Development, Reebok officially unveils their Minions: The Rise of Gru collection celebrating the blockbuster franchise’s upcoming theatrical release slated for 2 July 2021.
Available globally from the brands website and select retailers beginning 1 October, the exclusive full-family footwear collection unfolds a real-life creative alliance of epic proportions revealing a master plan years in the making.
Recognised globally as the world’s most successful animated film franchise of all time, Illumination’s iconic Despicable Me continues to capture the imagination of audiences worldwide. Evolving the Minions legacy and Reebok’s historically bold brand narrative, the Minions x Reebok collection injects inspiration directly from the forthcoming film that chronicles the untold story of one 12-year-old’s dream to become the world’s greatest supervillain.
The Minions x Reebok Question Mid “Gru’s Lab” is an imaginative modification of the historic Question Mid inspired by a young Gru for the ‘baddest’ baller of all-time, Allen Iverson, this silver/black execution injects glow-in-the-dark sticky “slime” into the outsole through two intake and outtake tubes to achieve impossible grip on court, whilst adapted rocket booster graphics underfoot propel any undersized villain to the rim.
Using different “metals” from around Gru’s lab to form a mostly unpolished silver upper, whilst a more-finished glossy chrome leather panel at the heel pops above his signature “G” logo stamped in place of the traditional Iverson “3”. Looking inside, wearers will find asymmetric double-sided ‘trap door’ sock liners – a first-of-its-kind sneaker innovation – that each hides top-secret elements from Gru’s lab on the underside.
In regards to the Minions x Reebok Instapump Fury “Vicious 6” shoe, for Gru to become the world’s greatest supervillain, he must first defeat the Vicious 6, the world’s most notorious collective of villains. Taking inspiration from the infamous group, this asymmetric fashion-forward take on Reebok’s historic ‘laceless’ Instapump Fury is one of the model’s boldest executions to date.
Mixing a plethora of contrasting prints, colours, materials and textures, the silhouette goes big like the villains themselves. The left shoe houses gold and yellow colour blocking, materials and graphics from Belle Bottom’s (voiced by Taraji P. Henson) go-to wardrobe, rugged nods to Stronghold’s (Danny Trejo) tank, and a custom-moulded heel TPU with faux stingray material inspired by Jean Claw’s (Jean-Claude Van Damme) robotic crab arm, whilst the right shoe features a padded collar lining with racing stripes and spikes inspired by Svengeance’s (Dolph Lundgren) over-the-top roller derby uniform, a teal and gold filigree with a stained glass pump ball replicating Nun Chuck’s (Lucy Lawless) holy chariot, and a zebra-striped pony hair and gator embossed toe nodding White Nuckle’s (Alan Arkin) throne, trophies and weapons.
The Minions x Reebok Club C “Vicious 6” shoe is a nod to the film’s 70’s vibes and the specific textures and retro colours dressing of the Vicious 6 villains’ lounge, this understated Club C features corduroy, premium leather and nubuck panels on the upper, a velvet interior lining, shag rug sock liner, and soft cotton laces all brought together by the Vicious 6 logo on the tongue.
The Minions x Reebok Instapump Fury “Minions” shoe is a homage to the Minions’ iconic yellow and blue colour palette, this vibrant yet wearable take on the Instapump Fury is imagined through the eye(s) of the Minions themselves, creating an asymmetric pair with bold nods to the film including a Minions party insole, Minion eyes on either Pump button, a banana peel graphic on the left outsole and reflective hits throughout.
The Minions x Reebok Club C “Otto” is this subtle yet bright kids-only take on the classic Club C celebrates the franchise’s newest Minion, “Otto.” The silhouette, a second creation inspired by the Minions horde, is filled with yellow paint, Minions party insoles, pops of lime green and a splash of mud on either outsole – the meaning behind which will be revealed in the forthcoming film.
Finally, Gru’s lab is replicated in real life by elevated sneaker packaging that houses each of these Reebok creations. Displayed on the box are hand-illustrated orthographic views of Gru’s childhood bedroom and top-secret lair riddled with Easter eggs from the forthcoming film and additional details that Minions, Iverson and Reebok fans will all enjoy.

By Jean Marie Carey
On 12 November 1028 Byzantine Empress Zoë took the imperial throne – for the first time –  as empress consort to Romanos III Argyros. Zoë Porphyrogenita (978 –1050) also reigned alongside her sister Theodora from April to June 1042. She was enthroned as the Empress Consort to a series of co-rulers beginning with Romanos III in 1028 until her death in 1050 while married to Constantine IX.
Zoë was one of the few Byzantine empresses who was Porphyrogenita, or "born into the purple" (that is, she was born to a reigning emperor). She was the second daughter of Constantine VIII and Helena, daughter of Alypius. Zoë lived a life of virtual obscurity in the imperial gynaeceum until circumstances (her dying father not having any sons) forced her into the centre of imperial politics.
In 1033, Zoë became enamoured of her courtier Michael, flaunted her lover openly, and spoke about making him emperor. Hearing the rumours, Romanos was concerned and confronted Michael, but he denied the accusations. On April 11, 1034, Romanos III was found dead in his bath, and there was speculation that Zoë and Michael had conspired to have him poisoned, then strangled or drowned. Zoë married Michael later the same day, and he reigned as Michael IV until his death in 1041. Key members of the court decided that Zoë needed a co-ruler, and that it should be her sister Theodora. A delegation headed by the Patrician Constantine Cabasilas went to the monastery at Petrion to convince Theodora to become co-empress alongside her sister. At an assembly at Hagia Sophia, the people escorted a furious Theodora from Petrion and proclaimed her empress along with Zoë.
Until her death in 1050, she enjoyed various amusements, and her rooms in the palace were filled with boiling pots and pans for the manufacture of ointments and perfumes. She had installed a laboratory (myrepseion) in her private quarters, where she prepared various cosmetics. All historical sources agree that she spent much of her time preparing not only perfumes but also drugs and poisons. Her laboratory was very well organized and the fires were burning day and night, while her female servants were helping her at the creation of new fragrances using imported essences from India and Egypt.

Personification of Ktisis (Foundation) as a Byzantine Empress. Mosaic, marble, glass, c. 550.  This monumental bust of a richly bejeweled lady who wears large pearls in her ears, a necklace of delicate stones about her throat, and two brooches-one clasping her yellow mantle and another at the tie of her dress-is an example of the exceptional mosaics created throughout the Early Byzantine world in the first half of the sixth century. Both her elaborate diadem and the neckline of her dress are bordered with alternating black and white tesserae meant to suggest pearls. The addition of blue glass to represent sapphires, or "hyacinths," among the red and green glass gemstones on the mosaic is characteristic of sixth-century Byzantine taste. The modeling of the lady's face with small olive-green and beige tesserae highlighted in white and shades of pink and the slightly asymmetrical arrangement of her large, softly staring eyes are typical of Byzantine painting of the period, which survives in the form of icons. Women with similar faces, hairstyles, necklaces, and pearl-bordered diadems carry martyrs' crowns in the early-sixth-century mosaics in the nave at Sant'Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna. A mosaic image of the archangel Michael, dated to 549, and in the Church of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, near Ravenna, has the same hair and eyes, as does the mid-sixth-century bust of the "Lady of Rank," thought to be from Constantinople, also in the Museum (The Cloisters Collection, 66.25).
The rod that she holds, the measuring tool for the Roman foot, identifies her as a personification of the abstract concept of "Ktisis," or Foundation, and symbolizes the donation, or foundation, of a building. Personifications of abstract ideas, as developed by the Stoic philosophers, remained popular in the Early Christian era. Images of Ktisis inscribed with her name, and often showing her holding the same measure, survive on the floor mosaics of bathhouses as well as churches throughout the Byzantine Empire, from Antioch and Cyprus to such African sites as Qasr-el-Lebia and Ras-el-Hilal. The Metropolitan Museum of Art Collection, Nr. MMA_.1998.69.
Balance Weight formed as the Bust of a Byzantine Empress, c. 390-400. Among the most striking Byzantine weights to have survived are the imperial weights issued in the late 4th and 5th centuries. Typically they depict the same royal figures seen on coins to promote the legitimacy and stability of the state and to guarantee their validity as "honest weights." Used on balance scales, the weights were sometimes filled with lead to make them heavier. The Cleveland Museum of Art, Nr. 1967.28.
