from the photo of talia and dina in the game, dina looks about 10-12 and talia looks like 15-17 so i think they have roughly a 5 year age difference between them.

from my crossfaded!maria wip!
summary/scene: early-ish in his time in jackson, tommy finds himself taking care of maria and talia (dina’s older sister) after they have a lil too much fun
“alright, maria.”
“why are you— why are talking to me like that?”
“like what?”
“like that, tommy. like ive had too much to drink.”
“i have a feeling i wont get away with answering that, ma’am”
“ma’am,” she mocked him like she always does, except far worse. “ma’am ma’am ma’am. i dont like it when you call me that. i like it too much.”
“What?” He looks her in the face with his eye brows furrowed, holding back his laugh—it’s clear from her red eyes as well as confused words that she’s still crossed, as johnny has said. “Oh, jesus, you’re really gone. you’re drunk as Cooter Brown.”
“Who the hell is Cooter Brow—“
“Cooter!” Talia exclaims the word from her spot on the floor, giggling hard with her eyes pressed shut in blissful peace. Her giggles turn into a cackle as she brings her arm to point a finger up at Tommy without even looking. “You said Cooter!”
“Okay, alright—“ He tries to move on, but Maria snorts and, to his surprise, starts giggling too; then it’s fucking pointless. He puts his face in his hands, defeated. By the time he finished a deep, long sigh, Talia and Maria are both on the floor near tears, rolling like a pair of hyenas.
maria pauses her laughing for just a second to gasp out towards talia “oh, god, i’m feeling it—talia, i’m fucking feeing it. my face is so warm, talia—why did you do this to me?”
“i did this to you?” talia is giggling so hard her face is damn near completely red, an impressive feat considering how tanned her skin is. she points a finger at herself and then turns it towards maria, nearly poking the other woman in the face. “you did this to you! i told you not to drink it—you smoked enough!”
“drink it?” tommy balked. what the fuck? “how the—did you make goddamn pot tea?”
“uh—“ judging from her face, she’d apparently forgotten he was there again. she tried to school her face into something clueless as maria continued to giggle adorably, muffling it into her hands. “pot? what pot? who said anything abou—?”
“Quit that,” Tommy says—and fuck, he sounds like Joel for a second he’s so exasperated. “Please, please tell me you didn’t let Maria drink decade-old weed, Talia.”
talia drops the act and pouts, clearly put out that he isn’t going along with her jokes—to be fair, he usually does. being up at what he guesses is hours past midnight isn’t helping his mood. Perhaps noticing his grumpy exhaustion, she goes on. “I obviously grow my own, buzzkill—it’s fresh! Do you want some? You seem like you could use some.”
“No. I do not want some.”
“Are you sure?”
“I—,” Tommy rubs a hand over this face, from his forehead to his mustache, and lets out a little laugh. He really can’t ever help it, with Talia. “Yeah, I’m sure. Thank you. Maybe later.”
“whatever you do,” he hears maria say, and he looks over—somehow, fast and quiet, she settled herself to lie straight with her back across the floor. she looks up at him with red-rimmed, squinty eyes and a small comfy smile; the sight of her so relaxed and blissed out makes him fall a little bit in love. she continues to speak, voice low and slightly slurred: “drink that shit slowly, tommy. i did it too fast, and now—“
talia and him watch, silent and amused, and maria takes a big deep breath, a big in-and-out like she’s just eaten the fullest meal of her life. her smile grows, slow and dangerous and beautiful, to show pearly white teeth.
“—now I can’t fucking move!” She breaks out into delighted cackled once again, and this round specifically reminds him so much of how she’d laughed in his arms when they’d first met—the memory makes his cheeks heat and his chest ache. oblivious to his yearning, she goes on, laughing. “i don’t want to fucking move, i feel so heavy. it’s fucking amazing.”
“yeah,” talia beams down at her from her spot on the couch, crossing her arms and straightening up. clearly, she’s proud and pleased with herself. “My shit’ll do that to you. I told you not to drink the whole thing.”
“Oh, whatever, it’s great, I’m great. I’m amazing,” Maria waves a hand in the air towards Talia, sloppily, and it drops back down onto her stomach with a comical smack. “Pot is great, Talia—you’re amazing! Tommy’s amazing, everything’s amazing.”
Talia shoots up an amused smirk at Tommy; the both of them are trying their best not to laugh at Maria, this time. “You hear that, Tommy? You’re amazing.”

October 31st
Adding a final sugar bat wing to the specialty cupcake, I tuck a stay curl behind my ear with a huff. After 2 hours of baking and decorating, I decide it was time for a break. Taking my headphones off, I turn towards my neighbor’s little sister, Dina.
Dina's ponytail bounces as she bops around the front with her headphones in, making sure the bakery is ready to open in an hour. She’s only 15, but she’s been a massive help with the bakery. She works part-time shifts, but I’m paying her holiday pay for being here since 6 a.m. at her age. Waving my hand through the open window between the kitchen and the register, I grab her attention. “I’m gonna go grab a coffee. Do you want anything?” I ask.
Dina shakes her head and smiles. “No thanks,” she says.
I shuffle around the kitchen grabbing my things. “Okay, I’ll take you to school when I get back,” I accept her answer. Dina’s probably stuffed from me feeding her croissants and donuts this morning.
Dina beams, seemingly grateful she doesn’t have to take public transit today in the city. “Cool. Do you need help after 4?” she offers.
Shaking my head, I secure my bag on my shoulder. “No, Dina. Go out and have fun. There’s gotta be a party or whatever you young kids are doing these days,” I argue. No one I know should be working on my favorite holiday. It’s the best time of the year.
Dina’s nose crinkles and she leans on the counter. “I don’t really party,” she confessed.
Nodding, I think about the fact that Dina's sister is probably working the E.R. night shift tonight. “Do you want to come over tonight? I’m just handing out candy and probably watching a movie later,” I offer her someone to hang out with.
Dina happily nods, accepting the offer. After reminding her that I’ll text her sister, I turn the handle to the door. The cool autumn air nearly whips me in the face as I step out onto the small threshold.
Staring down at my phone, I start to formulate the message to Talia. I only take two steps before I bump into a small figure. Setting my hands out on the tiny human’s shoulders, I look down and notice a brunette girl peering up at me. Her face twists in anger and she shrugs my hands off her shoulders. “Ow, fuck. Watch it,” She puts me in my place with so much attitude, it reminds me of myself when I was a kid.
Taking a deep breath, I try to compose myself. The younger version of me would’ve given her a piece of my mind, but it’s the best day in the world. Halloween. “I’m sorry, tiny human. I wasn’t paying attention,” I apologize and try to move past her to get coffee.
She steps in front of me again with her arms crossed. “Hey, I am not tiny,” she counters.
“Don’t take it personally. I call anyone under the age of 18 a tiny human,” I placate her.
She huffs before shifting a bit. “Well, now that your main concern should be avoiding a lawsuit, maybe you’ll hear me out,” she snips.
My head tilts in confusion at her statement. “Lawsuit? What do you mean lawsuit?” I ask in disbelief.
Her eyes roll in response to my question. “You know? I got hurt at your business & you discriminated against me. You should pay me or something,” she explains as if I should know this already.
I’ve spent enough time with tiny humans to know when one wants something from you. “Smart, but we’re on the sidewalk. It’s public property,” I break the news to her, gesturing to the cracked concrete beneath our feet.
The brunette teenager’s face turns red as her eyes dart down and then back up at me. “Shit, maybe I should’ve done this another way,” she thinks out loud.
Pinching the bridge of my nose, I daydream about a vanilla latte with almond milk. “Look, I need some coffee. Can we walk and blackmail me at the same time?” I ask.
She gnaws on her bottom lip, shifting back on her heels. “Well that’s the thing…” she pauses and waits for my name.
“Ginny,” I inform her.
She nods, seemingly internalizing every syllable. “Ginny. I have a class in 30 minutes. My da–” she stops herself, cursing under her breath. She squeezes her eyes shut right and takes a deep breath. “Anyways, he forgot to pick up the order last night. It might be under my name or his,” she blurts before opening her eyes.
I usually don’t allow customers to pick up orders a day late but the kid looks like she’s going through it. “Okay, how about you come inside and we figure it out so you get to school on time,” I say.
Her face instantly softens and a smile replaces her frown. “Cool. Thanks, Ginny,” she replies.
I open the door, motioning for her to step into the shop ahead of me. “What’s your name?” I ask her.
She looks over her shoulder and watches as I lock the door. “Ellie,” she beams.
Nodding, I start to walk with Ellie toward the back of the bakery. “Nice to meet you, Ellie,” I extend my hand and she shakes it.
When we get into the kitchen, Dina is sitting in the corner with her backpack at her feet. “That was fast,” she comments, ready to stand.
I motion for Dina to not get up with my hands. “I didn’t get coffee yet. Ignore us, I can handle this,” I chirp, breezing over to the iPad.
My fingers tap the screen looking for the list of pick-up orders. “Okay, let’s do this by process of elimination. What’s your last name so I can look you up?” I ask Ellie.
“Williams,” Ellie states clearly.
Typing the letters into the search box, I press enter. “Well your name isn’t in the system so let’s try his name next. Last name?” I try to move on to the next name.
“Miller,” Ellie replies.
Miller, that name sounds familiar. Miller, Miller, Miller. It’s on the tip of my tongue.
My brows twist as I try to place the name. “First name?” I finally give up and ask.
“Joel,” the name rolls off Ellie's tongue as sweet as lilies in May.
Shit. That’s why the name was so familiar. Maybe it’s not the same Joel. “Joel Miller? The chef?” I ask for clarification.
Ellie's brows furrow and she nods. “Yeah. Do you know him?” she counters.
Nodding, I click Chef Miller's order. “Yeah, I didn’t know he had a kid.” Not that’s it a bad thing. It makes him more attractive knowing he has the patience to be a support to a teenager.
Ellie rocks on her heels, looking over her shoulder at Dina. “Joel’s my adopted dad,” she mumbles.
“You don’t have to explain your relationship with him. I get it,” I chirp, turning to grab a box for the first half of the order. “It looks like you need 20 cookies. I haven’t put them out yet. Did you want to come to the rack and pick them out?” I ask Ellie, pointing to the back corner.
Ellie’s face lights up and she nods. “Fuck yeah. But I have to be quick. Art is first thing this morning,” she informs me.
“Let’s go, then,” I smile, waving her in my direction.
Tumblr media
My eyes flood with tears as I weep in my office around 3 p.m. My body jolts when the office door slams open against the wall. “Ginny,” I hear my employee Grace start to say. I swivel towards my chair, wiping the tears from my face. “Woah. I’m sorry,” she apologizes with wide eyes. I understand, I probably look like a hot red mess right now.
Motioning with my hand for her to ignore me, I take a deep breath. “You’re okay, what did you need?” I ask.
She nods, shifting to lean on the other leg uncomfortably. “There’s a customer in the front saying he had an order but we can’t find it. Can you help us?” she asks.
Nodding, I stand from the chair. “Yeah, I’ll be right there,” I chirp, trying my hardest to plaster on a fake smile. Grace gratefully takes this as a sufficient answer, turning on her heels to hurry back out to the front of the bakery.
My pink heels carry me over to the cabinet where I grab a pack of baby wipes. A sharp pain shoots up my soles as I shuffle over to the floor-length mirror in my office and I smooth my hands over my dress. My hair still looks perfect, which I'm grateful for. Grabbing some of the wipes, I try to clean my face as best as possible.
Once I deem my appearance acceptable, I toss the used wipes in the trash. The click of my shoes fills the back kitchen as I make my way up to the front. When I round the corner I see the back of a man with salt and pepper hair. “That’s the boss,” Chloé, another employee, says loudly over the noise in the large room.
My brain sparks, mentally preparing myself for the worst as the tall man slowly turns around. When I see his face, my tense body instantly relaxes. “Oh, Chef Miller. Hi,” I sigh and smile, genuinely this time.
Chef Miller looks me up and down while I close the large gap between us. My nose crinkles when I stop in front of him and he still hasn’t said anything. “Hi. I - um- I’m sorry,” he stammers.
Feeling confused, I break eye contact to look down at my outfit. There’s no flour on my costume but I’m suddenly feeling insecure. “Is everything alright?” I capture Chef Miller's chesnut irises again.
Chef Miller inhales sharply, letting his arms fall to his side. “Mhm, just didn’t know you owned this place is all,” he informs me.
Thank fuck. I thought I had a booger front and center. I suddenly remember forgetting to call The Austin after Ellie came in, as promised. “Yeah, and shit. I meant to call your restaurant and tell you. Ellie came in earlier and I gave her the school order,” I try to ease his mind.
Chef Miller lets out a heavy sigh, doubling over. “Oh lord. I forgot ‘em once and thought I forgot ‘em again. Been so busy at the resteraunt, I –” he cuts his rant short. The denim shirt seems to constrict and I notice his shoulders rising and falling rapidly.
My eyes go wide and I step a little closer to the chef, putting my hand on his back. “Chef Miller, are you alright?” I ask.
Chef Miller nods with his face still towards the pink tile floor. “I’m fine. It’s just the cold air all of a sudden,” he lies and I feel the bass of his voice in my palm.
My hand instinctively rubs circles on his back. “Chef Mill-”
“Joel, sweetheart. Call me Joel,” Joel cuts me off.
“Joel,” I say, and the name almost feels foreign on my tongue. “Do you want to sit down for a second? Try a Halloween brownie?” I offer, hoping it’ll keep him from going down this continuous spiral.
Joel shakes his head and slowly starts to stand, straightening his back. “No, thank you. I don’t want to take up more of your time,” he acknowledges the long line of customers in the bakery.
Taking a step back, I clasp my hands in front of me. Something about Joel intrigues me, and I quickly think of an excuse to keep him in the shop. “How about you sit because you’re saving me from the joy of interacting with rude Halloween patrons,” I practically beg him.
He peers over his shoulder at the case with the sweet treats. His eyes return to mine with a gleam in them. “Okay, deal,” he agrees with a small smile.
Nodding, I feel the heat rush to my cheeks. Joel picks a booth to sit in while I scurry to grab him a brownie and a glass of water. When I get back to the booth, I’m out of breath from trying to function in the pink block heels. “Here, it’s on the house,” I suggest, pushing the items towards him.
Joel shakes his head, pulling out a 10-dollar bill. “This is all the cash I have on me but, I can offer two redo meals for the price of one,” he proposes, sliding the cash over towards me.
Shaking my head, I slide it back over towards Joel. “It’s not a big deal,” I argue.
“No, it is. You saved her from embarrassment. I should be tipping you 10 fold,” Joel contests, pushing it back across the table.
Getting frustrated, I reach out and push the cash back in his direction with finality. “Put it in the fucking tip jar. For Christ's sake, Joel. I don’t need it. My staff will split it at the end of the shift,” I declare trying to convince him I do not need the extra cash.
Joel looks down and grabs the cash, tucking it into his back pocket. “Fine,” he mutters under his breath. “So, how was she?” he asks a bit louder.
My head tilts in confusion. “What do you mean?” I ask for clarification.
Joel picks up the brownie, examining the spiderweb marshmallows covering the dessert. “I mean what was she like? Just trying to make sure she’s on the right track is all. Happy and everything,” he explains before taking a bite.
My eyes squint as I study Joel chewing. Every muscle in his jaw flexes and he closes his eyes. “Mmmm, this is good,” he moans and I feel the color drain from my face. My stomach flutters and I try to force the bile back down my throat.
It’s platonic, Imogen. Not even that. We’re acquaintances. “She reminds me of when I was a teenager. Didn’t think I’d ever meet someone that swears more than me,” I finally answer him.
Joel picks up the water, taking a sip of the cool liquid before setting it back on the table. “I told her no more goddamn swearing in public,” he complains.
Pursing my lips together, I try not to laugh at how ironic the scenario is. “Um, Joel,” I say, trying to fight a snicker while Joel takes another bite.
Joel's eyes flick up to mine and I almost crumble. He hums for me to continue while he chews.
Clearing my throat, I try to think of the best way to put this. I don’t want him to think I’m trying to tell him how to parent his kid. “If you want her not to swear in public, you have to lead by example,” I advise the mesmerizing man sitting across from me.
Joel instantly stops chewing and takes a big gulp. “Shit, you’re right,” he swears again and I stifle another giggle.
The desire to spend more time with Joel creeps up my spine once again. “Can I ask you something? And you can say no,” I start feeling a slight warmth in my chest.
Joel nods, wiping his mouth with a pink napkin. “Yeah, sure,” he confirms before going in for the last of the brownie.
My fingers tap the table beneath me, feeling anxious about what I’m going to suggest. “Did the two of you have plans tonight?” I investigate.
Joel takes a few moments to finish chewing while he shakes his head. “No. It’s Ellie’s first Halloween with me, too. I didn’t know what to do so I didn’t plan anything.” he addresses their plans.
A small smile creeps onto my lips. “Well, I’m closing the shop early. My neighbor’s little sister is coming over to hang out and watch a movie. You should bring Ellie by for a little while. Maybe they’ll end up being friends,” I ramble.
Joel’s face brightens as he processes the information. “I think that’d be good for her. I took off work and she should be out of school in an hour or two. I’ll get her fed and we’ll be on our way,” he voices before finishing the glass of water.
A few drops of water slip past his bottom lip onto Joel's beard, and I resist the craving to reach up and fix him. “Sounds good,” I note his plans while I slide out of the booth. “Look, I have to get back,” I tell him, seeing the line grow in size.
Joel nods and waves, following suit behind me. As I glide away, I feel something gnawing at my insides. He’s so worried about Ellie and I just want to reassure him. “Joel,” I grab his attention before he gets too far away from me.
He turns around to face me. “Yes, sweetheart?” Joel asks so kindly, I could melt butter on his words.
“You’re a really great dad. I mean, you’d have to be blind not to see that. She’s smart, beautiful, and healthy. I don’t know about happy but, what teenage girl is?” I sincerely express to him what I’ve observed already.
I can tell Joel’s trying his best when he gives me a half smile. “That’s sweet of you, darlin’,” he husks.
Shrugging, I try to push away the flush creeping into my cheeks. “It’s just the truth. And she loves you too, Joel,” I add.
Joel chuckles, shaking his head. His head hangs and he stares at the ground for a moment until a customer needs to pass his large frame to get out of the store.
Joel moves to the side, seemingly regaining his focus. “Thank you, fuck. I needed that,” he swears.
Smiling, I reach out and caress his arm. “I know. I’ll see you tonight,” I wink, spinning on my toes and floating away from the door.
“See you later, Ginny,” he returns the farewell, pulling open the door to my shop and exiting. The lingering smell of his cologne dances in my brain as I try to refocus on the current customers.
Tumblr media
“Happy Halloween!” I cheer, scooping the last of the candy into small bags.
It’s always been my favorite holiday and this year, I’m dressed head to toe in pink as Baker Barbie. Once the rush of kids passes, I turn to join Dina in the booth next to the window. My heels click across the floors as I strut towards her.
We opted out for pizza pickup after school and I let the closers handle shutting the store. She made quick work of packing her back at her sisters when we stopped by, having already picked out her Tinkerbell costume.
Just as I make it to the booth, I hear the doorbell jingle. “Hey, Ginny,” I hear a familiar voice.
Turning around, I face the short brunette girl dressed as Wednesday. “Oh! Hi, Ellie. I love your costume. Where’s your—“ I start to ask when my thoughts are cut short. Joel Miller grudgingly saunters into my bakery dressed in a black t-shirt that tightly hugs his body.
Just like the first day we met, I felt my body start to heat up. “Look! I made him dress up as Ken since you don’t have one today,” Ellie proudly points to the pink ‘Ken’ lettering in the middle of Joel’s chest.
Blood rushes to my cheeks when I think about the possibility of us being together. Of him being my Ken. But I know it’s just my delusional thoughts.
My feet involuntarily move forward towards them so I’m not shouting across the bakery. “Oh that’s, well,” I stammer over my words trying to ease myself out of a bootleg Parent Trap. “You did a fantastic job with his costume,” I compliment her smoothly.
My legs almost give out when the corners of Joel’s mouth curve into a small smile. Ellie’s face lights up and she hits Joel in the chest lightly with the back of her hand. “See, Joel. She said you’re Kenough,” she jokes with him.
His brows knit together and he turns towards her, placing his hands on his hips. “The hell is that supposed to mean?” he questions her.
Standing next to him, my hands slide under his arm, tugging him towards the booth in the back. “Don’t think about it too much,” I giggle, trying to ignore the electricity I feel beneath my palms.
His bicep is so muscular, that I find myself wondering if he could pick me up. I make a mental note to charge both vibrators so I can fantasize about him later tonight. “Cupcake?” I offer pointing to the case, trying to dust the dirty thoughts out of my head.
Joel relaxes under my touch and I use him to stabilize myself in the tall heels. “I’ve had ‘nough sugar for today,” he grunts.
Tutting, I smile up at him. “Joel Miller, you can’t expect to come into a bakery and not get any sweetness in your life,” I challenge him. I can’t be upset though, he did try my brownie and my croissant earlier.
A small smirk creeps onto his lips. “Don’t think I have to eat anythin’ for that,” he flirts and my eyes nearly pop out of my head.
Shifting my attention to the teenagers awkwardly standing within a mile distance of each other, I try to form introductions. Dropping my grip on Joel’s arm, I cross the space to the booth. “Ellie, meet Dina. Dina, meet Ellie,” I babble, pointing back and forth between the girls.
“Dina is my neighbor,” I say for the two of them, but mostly for Joel's sake. The likelihood of the teenagers caring about our relationship is none. Sliding into the booth, I wave my hand inviting them to join us. Ellie softly smiles and she lifts her hand, awkwardly waving. “Hey. You look familiar,” she greets Dina.
Dina blushes, seemingly wanting to hide behind me. “Hi,” she mumbles.
A small girl dressed as a gymnast does a back walkover outside the window and my face twists. The city sidewalk is fucking disgusting. “Shit, shit, shit,” I hear Ellie start to panic.
My face is plastered with confusion as Dina scoots over toward me. “What’s her problem?” she whispers.
My face turns towards her and I shrug with my eyes wandering back to Ellie. She looks as though she’s about to crawl out of her skin.
Joel leans across the table and puts up his hand to cover his mouth from Ellie’s view. “She has an irrational fear of gymnasts,” he rasps lowly.
Nodding, I try to think of a way to peel Ellie away from the window. “Okay well. Dina, why don’t you and Ellie go grab some cider while Joel and I catch up,” I suggest.
Dina’s face turns red and she nods. My hands make contact with the cold table as I use it to slide out of the small booth.
Ellie looks unsure of what to do. “Joel?” she looks up at him with nervousness and asks.
“You’ll be fine,” Joel reassures her, following suit across from me and the girls disappear into the kitchen.
A smile creeps onto my face as I watch Joel awkwardly readjust his t-shirt. “So…” I start, pausing to awkwardly gnaw on my lip.
Joel seemingly notices how awkward I feel, leaning forward towards me. “How long have you owned this place?” he asks, tongue laced with curiosity.
Slouching a bit, I remember the reason why I started this career path. “A couple of years now. I opened it after my parents passed away,” I let him know.
His eyes dart down towards the table. “I’m sorry, darlin’. I didn’t mean to offend you,” he apologizes.
I reach across the table and grab his calloused hands. “It’s okay. I wanted to do something I loved and so I found and bought this space a couple of months after,” I explain.
He doesn’t flinch and the heat radiates in my palms. “So it’s just you running things? No partner?” he inquires.
The realization that I just grabbed his hands hits me, and I drop them like they’re a hot potato. His nose crinkles and I think I catch a grimace from him. “No partner,” I answer.
He leans back into the pink pleather booth and the seat beneath him crinkles. “Wow, that’s impressive. The Austin would probably crumble,” he acknowledges.
A giggle slips my lips. “Well, Daylight Bakery is not gunning for a Michelin Star,” I point out.
He tilts his head to the right and raises his eyebrow slightly. “You could do it,” he muses.
My left hand waves him off. “You flatter me. But can we stop talking about me? I’m getting embarrassed,” I express, feeling particularly vulnerable when talking about the success of my business.
Joel lifts a brow, looking at me with a surprised expression. “I thought Barbie doesn’t get embarrassed,” he points out.
Shaking my head, I smile at him. “She doesn’t… wait. You’ve seen The Barbie Movie?” I ask him. Honestly, I’m astonished.
He nods, brushing his hair back with his hand. “Mmmhm.  I do have a daughter,” he elaborates.
The urge to ask him about his situation with Ellie creeps up my back. I want to know how Chef Joel ended up adopting a teenager who swears like a sailor. “About that. I hate to be nosey but, I can’t help it. How did you end up adopting Ellie?” I blurt out the compulsive thought.
He grunts and my eyes wander down to his shoulders. His whole upper body looks tight and uncomfortable. “Long story. Had a daughter, Sarah. She passed a couple of years ago,” he starts, voice laced with sadness.
My face softens and I fight the urge to cry again for the millionth time today. I can’t imagine how it must feel to lose a child. Worse than any pain known to man. “Oh, Joel. I’m so sorry,” I apologize.
Sadness glows in his eyes and I feel the desire to jump across the table and embrace him. “It’s okay, I was able to grieve. Still grievin’,” he adds.
My head bobs up and down, processing the information. “Yeah. I totally get that,” I voice quietly.
I try to stay silent to allow him to continue if he feels like it. The air between us feels solum. “After she passed, I put all my energy into the restaurant. Ellie’s birth mother died givin’ birth to her, and her mom’s partner worked at The Austin,” he notes.
“Worked?” I question him. I assumed she was still working there.
He rubs the scruff on his jaw and lets out a heavy sigh. “Yeah, she uh. She has an addiction. She was doing well for Ellie's whole life and then, somethin' happened and she relapsed. Asked if Ellie could stay with me for a while. Never came back,” he expands.
Shaking my head, I feel like a house is sitting on my heart. No one deserves to be left like that by someone they love. “That’s, wow. Poor girl,” I express sympathy for Ellie.
Joel shrugs as if it’s no big deal. “Yeah. What was I supposed to do? Say no?” he chuckles, running his hands over his face.
My lips press together and my eyes capture his bloodshot ones. “No,” I murmur.
“Right. After a while, she just became mine I guess. She still reminds me I’m not her dad every once in a while,” he vents.
Tucking a stray curl behind my ear, I shift a bit in my seat. “Is it when you fight?” I query.
Joel looks away, staring off into space behind me in deep thought. “Mmmhm,” he recalls.
My body relaxes when he confirms my suspicions. “She’s just a regular teenager with teenage angst. She nearly said ‘my dad’ this morning,” I try to appeal to him.
His ears perk up and his eyebrows raise. “Really?” he nearly gasps.
My face twists and I look at him with confusion. Why would that be such a surprise to him? “Yeah,” I confirm.
His eyes gradually widen while he stares a hole through my soul. “Woah,” he breathes.
My head moves slightly to the right to make sure he’s still looking at me and not just processing. His gaze follows mine, so I continue, “Has she never said that before?”
Joel rubs the back of his neck. “No, not to me,” he grunts.
Nodding, I blink slowly. “Give her time,” I advise him.
A loud bang interrupts us and when I turn my head, I see Ellie scrambling out of the kitchen with Dina attached to her hip. “Joel, can we go watch a movie?” She asks pointing up towards the ceiling.
Joel’s brows furrow as his eyes follow her finger. “Why are you pointing up, kiddo?” He asks.
I lean across the table so I’m a little closer to Joel. “They’re asking if we can go watch it in my living room,” I elaborate to clear any confusion he may have.
Joel’s head turns in my direction. “You live above the bakery?” he digs.
“I do,” I reveal. It was easier for me to buy the whole building and split it into half residential than to buy two separate properties. Dina and her sister rent a condo in the building next door, so all 4 floors are mine.
“That’s convenient,” he comments toward me before turning his attention back to Ellie. “I don’t care, but it’s not my TV or my place. You’ll have to ask Ms. Scott,” he gives her permission, gesturing to me.
Ellie rocks back on her heels, rotating her body in my direction. “Ginny, can we watch the movie now?” she stammers, excitedly.
“Ms. Scott, Ellie. Mind your manners,” Joel corrects Ellie.
I reach out, putting my hand on Joel’s forearm. “It’s fine, Joel. I told her to call me Ginny,” I state, hoping it’ll save Ellie from a lashing.
Before he can say anything, I remove my hand from his arm to grab my keys from the table. “Here, catch,” I chime, tossing Dina the keys.
She successfully catches it, tugging Ellie towards the back with her free arm. “We’ll be up there in a second. No tequila, no weed, and no wine, Dina. I mean it,” I warn Dina.
“Buzzkill,” Dina grunts as they reach the pink double doors.
“Thanks, Gin– I mean, Ms. Scott,” Ellie beams over her shoulder.
“For fucks sake. Drop the Ms. Scott, Ellie,” I call back to her just as the doors close behind them, leaving me and Joel alone once again.
Fidgeting in my seat, I swallow my impulse to confess my crush to the southern gentleman. “Happy Halloween,” I cheer.
Tumblr media
The stairs creek with each step we take down them as Ellie and I creep downstairs. Dina left a few minutes ago when Talia picked her up from work. The only ones left in the bakery are Joel, me, and Ellie. “Hey, Ginny. Can I ask you a favor?” Ellie breaks the comfortable silence.
I nod sleepy, praying my feet carry me back up the steps. I am not above sleeping in a bakery booth as opposed to climbing 3 flights of steps. “Mmm,” I hum for Ellie to continue.
Just a couple more steps, Imogen. “Can I come to the bakery after school, you know, just to hang out and sketch? Joel doesn’t get home till 11 pm most nights,” I hear her practically beg.
“Of course. Dina’s sister, Talia, is the same. That’s why she works the afternoon shifts,” I tell her.
I have no problem with her hanging out here in the afternoons. And besides, Dina and Ellie found out they go to the same school today. Why would I want to separate the budding friendship?
Ellie clears her throat, stopping once we get to the bottom of the steps. “Yeah…” she murmurs.
Suddenly, I’m wide awake. “Oh, you…” I start, searching her eyes unsure of how to phrase my words. “That's great, Ellie,” I attempt to telepathically communicate with her that as a queer child, she’s always safe with me.
Ellie’s eyes flicker with fear. “Please don’t tell Joel,” she quickly begs.
As if we spoke him into existence, Joel comes from around the corner at that moment. “Tell Joel what?” he interrogates us.
My breathing quickens and I feel sweat start to collect above my brow. There’s no fucking way I’m going to out Ellie to her dad, or anyone to anyone for that matter. “That she hates your steaks too,” I say as convincingly as possible.
Joel shrugs on his jacket, not bothering to adjust the fit. “Is that so?” he smirks.
Ellie shifts from one foot to the other. “Um, yeah. It’s shit, Joel. Sorry. I didn’t want to tell you,” Ellie rambles and I nudge her to stop talking. The more she talks, the more details we have to remember about this lie going forward. Fucking tiny humans.
Joel chuckles and I glide past Ellie to adjust his jacket for him. The air between us is electric when I tug his jacket up slightly. Ellie snickers, and I assume it's because I'm practically fluffing her father. Once I deem my styling of Chef Ken perfect, I flick on the lights in the bakery. “Maybe that’s what’s keepin’ me away from a star,” I hear Joel complain behind me.
When I turn around, Ellie is shrugging. “Maybe. Let’s go home,” she blurts, anxiously pulling her dad towards the door.
My feet shuffle across the floor in my slippers behind them. “Oh, Joel. Wait,” I call after them, attempting to catch up. “Ellie’s gonna hang at the bakery after school days and do homework. I can hire her next year if you want me to," I huff out of breath.
Joel’s smirk melts away and he turns towards the mini version of him. “Ellie,” he scolds her.
Ellie puts her hands up in defense. “What?” she asks.
Joel shakes his head with disapproval. “Ms. Scott’s very busy. I don’t think she’d appreciate havin' you here 5 out of the 7 days in a week,” he paints a picture of Ellie overstaying her welcome.
I don’t want her to ever feel like she can’t come here, especially after she was so vulnerable with me in the stairwell. “Actually, it’s fine. We have an empty wall right there,” I point to the blank canvas, ready to be explored. "Maybe you can paint something on that. Like a mural," I suggest.
Ellie’s jaw drops and she bounces slightly on her toes. “Holy shit! Really?” she buzzes.
Joel shifts, crossing his arms. “Ellie,” he repeats.
Ellie scoffs, looking at Joel as if she’s saying are you fucking kidding me? “I’m sorry. Holy fuck, really?!” she regurgitates with a worse swear word.
I smile at her excitement. “Really,” I whisper as if it’s the best-kept secret.
“Can it be space-themed?” Ellie counters.
Nodding, I try to imagine what a space-themed wall would look like. Maybe she can incorporate cupcakes. “It can be anything you want. Call it ‘Ellie’s Wall’ or something,” I encourage her.
Ellie nods, finally calming down a bit. “That’s awesome,” she marvels.
Ellie looks up at Joel with the worst puppy dog eyes I’ve ever seen. Not that it matters, because he’s crumbling by the second. “You can do it. Long as you’re on top of your schoolwork,” he permits her to spend time here.
Ellie smiles, moving closer to the door. “Okay, okay. I’m going before you take it back. Bye, Ginny,” she boasts confidently while yanking open the door.
I chuckle at her antics. “Bye, Ellie. See you tomorrow,” I bid her goodbye.
The door shuts behind us and a faint jingling sound enters the room. Joel steps closer to me, slightly trapping me in the small doorway. “So,” he starts, cutting himself off.
My eyes snap away from his to the floor. I can’t fucking look at him. Not when he’s this close looking good enough to eat. “So,” I murmur.
Joel bends down a little bit, forcing me to look back into his coffee-colored irises. “Thank you. For everything today,” he smiles, putting a hand over his chest.
God, I’m probably as red as a tomato. I want to sprint as far as I can away from this conversation. “You’re welcome,” I voice so low, it’s almost a whisper.
Joel reaches for the door handle right next to me. So he wasn’t trying to kiss me. “Guess, I’ll be seein’ you tomorrow when I pick up Ellie,” he smiles, opening up the door.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed but I try to push it to the back of my mind. We’re just acquaintances, Ginny. “Thanks for coming. I had a great holiday,” I squeek.
His mouth curves up into a smile. “So did I,” he chuckles, stepping out of the door.
My delusional brain grabs the door behind him before he pulls it shut. Maybe this is it. Maybe he has a crush too. “Goodnight, Joel,” I melodically bid him goodbye.
Joel smiles, awkwardly waving. “Goodnight,” he murmurs, pulling the door shut.
Joel stands directly outside and peers through the window, pointing down at the lock. “Now,” he mouths, and I click the metal switch.
Shaking my head at his antics, I spin around to trek back upstairs. Once I’m in my living room, my feet drag across the floor to shut the window facing the street. I scratch my head when I hear two voices screaming at each other below. “You didn’t kiss her? What the hell, dude?” Ellie chews out Joel and my cheeks burn.
“Ellie, no questions,” I hear Joel snip at his daughter.
Curiosity killed the cat and Ellie, apparently. “Why didn’t you kiss h–”
“Damn it, Ellie. Shut up and get in the car,” I hear Joel grumble before a car door slams. I giggle, shutting my window and thanking the gods above for such a great Hallows Eve.

Chapter Five: Red Sky in Morning
Hunched over the weather radar on the bridge, Joel pinched the bridge of his nose beneath his dark rimmed glasses. A line of storms would be moving through the area later and it was already choppy in the marina. It wasn’t looking good for getting out on the open water for the first day of charter and that always made it harder on the interior crew – they would be responsible for keeping the guests entertained without being able to use the water toys.
With a heavy sigh, Joel turned away from the radar. There was nothing he could do about the weather. He was beginning to feel equally hopeless about the status of whatever this was with you. Things did not go how he hoped the other night and you stuck to your word in keeping a distance from him. That wasn’t what he wanted, at all, but he didn’t know how to get you to understand.
Romantic feelings were confusing and made him feel incredibly vulnerable, which he hated. That’s why he tended to avoid them.
“Hey, Dad,” Sarah chirped as she entered the bridge, peering at the weather radar. “It’s not looking good for today, huh?”
“No, baby girl, it doesn’t,” Joel replied, eyes softening at the sight of his daughter. She always brightened his day, and he loved working with her. “It’ll be up to your crew to keep them entertained until at least tomorrow. Hopefully the weather will clear up by then.”
Sarah nodded confidently, her left hand pulling a small spiral notepad from her pocket. “About that, I’ve come up with a couple ideas of what we could do with the guests today. The primary’s a renowned food critic, right? I was thinking Tess could host a cooking class with Talia as her sous chef since she has some culinary talent. The guests could pair up and create a Caribbean-style dish for their dinner. In the meantime, we could do a blind tasting where the guests have to guess exotic flavors and whatnot. What do you think?”
Feeling his chest swell with pride, Joel’s lips twitched into a broad smile. “That sounds great, honey. You think Tess will be into it?”
Beaming back at him, Sarah snapped her notepad shut. “Already checked, Tess is onboard. Said she’d love the challenge of doing something different for once.”
He laughed, no doubt she would. “Good. Thank you for taking the initiative here. I’m really proud of you, Sar. I think the guests will love it.” Joel pulled her in for a tight hug, the warmth of the embrace relieving some of the stress he’d been feeling. “The guests should be arriving soon. Go finish getting ready.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The primary guest was a quirky woman in her fifties named Donna, with short, dark hair going naturally gray and laugh lines ringing her bright green eyes. She wore chunky purple glasses with a chain attached like an old librarian. She was boisterous and friendly with a deep laugh, the kind of woman who made friends everywhere she went. Donna was accompanied by her husband of thirty years, a mild-mannered man named Doug who appeared to be her exact opposite in all ways, and two other couples who had been long-time friends of theirs.
From the moment they stepped onto the yacht, the guests were unbothered by the weather and took it in stride when Joel informed them the yacht would remain in the marina until the next day.
“The crew has some fun activities planned to keep you entertained, though,” he finished, hand stretched out to direct their attention toward Sarah.
“If you’ll follow me, I’ll give you a tour and show you to your rooms.” Sarah led them from the aft deck, explaining the layout of the yacht as she went.
Joel held Tommy back for a moment as you, Connor, and Ellie brought the luggage onboard once the guests were out of sight.
“Make sure your team is ready to assist interior with whatever they need, ok?”
“Of course, brother. We have their backs. Whoever isn’t tasked with helping inside will work on equipment maintenance in the lazarette,” Tommy explained. It was the perfect time to check the oil in the jet skis and tender along with any other fluid top-offs or changes on the equipment.
Joel patted his brother’s back with a solemn nod, his eyes tracking you as he turned to head for the bridge. You were looking down with a large piece of luggage in your arms and didn’t notice him. Jaw tensed, he ascended to the bridge deck with you occupying too much space in his mind.
“That’s the last of the luggage on, Tommy,” you called before heading for the guest cabins. Once the luggage was placed in the correct rooms, you headed toward the stern. Tommy reviewed his plan with you before the guests arrived, so you made your way to the lazarette beneath the aft deck.
“Hey Brit!” Tommy greeted you like he hadn’t seen you in a while when you stopped at his side in front of one of the jet skis. He’d recently taken to calling you Brit, instead of England, and it seemed to be catching on with the rest of the crew. “It’s short for British, get it?” he said the first time he used it. You heard that new nickname more than your real name now and it amused you.
“Hello Tommy,” you chuckled. “Where do you want to start?”
“Let’s check the oil first and see if anything needs to be topped off. We shouldn’t need to change it yet, but we will if we must,” Tommy explained. “It’s just going to be me and you. Ellie and Connor will be assisting the interior with anything they need.”
Perfectly content with that arrangement, you picked up the necessary tools to open one of the jet skis. You enjoyed the maintenance work even with the inherent messiness. You always wound up with oil under your fingernails no matter how careful you were, but you’d become a pro at washing it off after all the years spent helping your grandfather.
Pulling out his phone, Tommy played music while you set about your tasks. The pair of you worked well together, talking and teasing, singing off key to 90s rock the whole time. It was effortless, being yourself with Tommy, and you wondered why you couldn’t be falling for him instead of his brother. Tommy didn’t seem to have the same strict rules for himself that Joel did, and it would have been so much easier to be with him.
Unfortunately, the heart wanted what the heart wanted, and yours wanted a grumpy pain in the ass who made things more difficult than they needed to be.
Shaking yourself, you pushed away thoughts of Joel. You wasted enough time thinking about him, it was time to focus on something, anything else for a while. Steering clear of him physically was easier than you thought the past day and a half, but the emotional and mental distancing was proving far more difficult. The dreams that plagued you at night didn’t help, your subconscious incessantly teasing you with images of a life that you can’t have with Joel.
Picking up on your mood, Tommy did his best to distract you from your thoughts. You had no doubt that he already knew what happened and why you were down, knowing that Sarah or Tess, maybe even Joel himself, spoke to Tommy about it.
“’Kay, Brit. Let’s play a game,” he said while you were gathering the drip pan and some rags. The oil in one of the jet skis needed to be changed after all. It was time to get messy. “Chocolate or vanilla?”
“What kind of game is this?” you asked, perplexed.
“Just pick the one you prefer. It’s not that difficult.” Tommy laughed.
“Er, ok. Chocolate.”
Satisfied, Tommy continued with his unusual little game. “Coffee or tea?”
“Tea, obviously.” Your eyes rolled so hard it made you dizzy.
“Dogs or cats?”
“I like both.”
“You can only pick one, Brit. Them’s the rules.”
“Fine. Dogs.”
The game continued for some time, Tommy’s broad grin growing the more you got into it. It was a great distraction, and you were eternally grateful to him for it. The afternoon passed as the pair of you continued to work and chat until Sarah’s call came over the radio asking for additional help setting up for the cooking class.
“The primary requested that some of the crew participate too. They want to make it a contest to see who makes the best dish,” Sarah explained when the two of you joined her after washing up. “I’ve already assigned pairs.”
Sarah’s expression was a perfect mix of determination and guilt as she looked down at the clipboard in her hands. She was up to something, and you would bet this week’s tip on what it was.
“Tommy, I paired you with Ellie,” she began, turning to you with a thin, hopeful smile and upturned brows. “Brit, you’ll be with my Dad.”
“Sarah,” Tommy warned on your behalf before you could respond. He spent hours working hard to lighten your mood and didn’t want the effort to go to waste. “I don’t think that’s such a good idea right now, for obvious reasons.”
“It was the captain’s request, Uncle Tommy. Not much I could do,” Sarah explained with a shrug. Turning to you, she grabbed your hand in a soft grip. “I’m sorry. I think he’s trying to make things right between you two. Give him this chance?”
Just when you finally stop overthinking about him, he manages to reel you back in. Resigned to your fate, you nodded with a grimace. There wasn’t much you could do about it anyway.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Due to the rain, a series of small cooking stations with a larger table at the front, where Tess and Talia would do the demonstrating, were setup in the main salon. Fairy lights were strung along the walls and ceiling, bringing a starry night effect inside the boat to make up for the weather outside. The yacht was slightly bobbing in the water due to the wind.
“Welcome to Cooking with Tess and Talia!” Tess greeted as the guests, Emmy, Connor, Ellie, Joel, and Tommy settled in their stations. You were the last to arrive, leaving Joel concerned that you really didn’t want to work with him. Despite it only being a couple of days, he was desperate to make things right, to have you speaking to him again. He couldn’t let himself be with you yet, but he didn’t want to be without you either.
Yes, he was keenly aware of the emotional roller coaster he created and how affected you were by it, but he could do nothing to stop it.
“Thanks for agreeing to be my partner,” Joel murmured once you were at his side, lips quirking up in a lopsided smile. He let all his feelings and things he could not say shine through his eyes, hoping you could see it when he gazed at you.
“I couldn’t very well deny a request from the captain, could I?” you returned, tone dull to hide your nerves and the lingering hurt feelings.
Joel sighed wearily. Maybe this was a mistake. Maybe he needed to just leave you be. The pair of you did your best to focus on the instructions Tess gave, though the distraction of being so close physically yet so distant emotionally was difficult to manage.
“We are going to make pernil, a classic Puerto Rican dish using roast pork shoulder. We will start with the marinade for the pork shoulder. While the pork is marinading and roasting in the oven, we will make the rice and desert. In all, this will take a few hours, then we will have a tasting to judge whose turned out best. Ready?”
Tess spoke through the steps, laying out the ingredients for the marinade as Talia demonstrated the process. Within the first few steps, Ellie and Tommy were already laughing and knocking things off their table as they jostled for who would get to add the ingredients first. Cooking was clearly not their strength, but at least they were having fun. Donna, the primary, and her husband concentrated with intense focus on their preparations, talking each other through the steps as they measured out the spices for the marinade. It was clear that they spent a lot of time working together in the kitchen. The other guests appeared to be having fun, chatting quietly, and laughing when they messed something up.
Joel spoke to you in soft murmurs as the pair of you worked together. Cooking was not your jam he could tell, but Joel was well versed, influenced by so many years of friendship with Tess and being a single parent wanting to do right by Sarah. He handled the ingredients and utensils with quiet confidence. You took direction well, passing him the items as requested, holding the bowl steady as he mixed the marinade, and finally brushing the liquid over the pork shoulder.
As the only ones not participating, Sammy and Sarah gathered the pork shoulders to bring to the galley to continue marinading before going in the oven in an hour. They returned with fresh adult beverages for the guests and waters for the crew as Tess segued into the next steps of preparing the dish, instructing everyone in chopping onions and peppers to go into the yellow rice. Each station was equipped with a rice cooker rented from the provisions company.
“This is actually kind of fun,” you admitted out of nowhere as Joel guided you in how to properly chop the vegetables, his large, warm hand covering your own on the knife. His heart swelled at that admission. Maybe there was hope after all.
“It’s a great activity to do together,” Joel replied, voice rough with repressed feelings. Oh how he wanted you to know that he would love to do this with you in his kitchen back in Austin someday, but it was not the time to share those types of thoughts.
Over the next hour, Tommy and Ellie spilled all of their rice on the floor, knocking them completely out of the little competition. Their hysterical laughter left the rest of the competitors with little doubt that they were sad about that fact. Joel’s deep brown eyes watched you smile broadly at their hijinks, his own lips quirking up at the sight.
“I hope you two know you’re on cleaning duty after this!” Joel called to them, a hint of teasing in his tone.
You loosened up after that, chatting a little more with Joel about the food you were both preparing and anything else that came to mind. You both studiously avoided the topic of your feelings for each other. Joel was just happy that you were having fun and speaking to him. He hoped it lasted beyond this activity.
“Have you ever had flan before?” Joel asked as the dessert preparations began.
“No, I’m not a huge dessert person. I’ve heard it’s good though,” you replied.
“It really is. I’ve made it before at home.”
“So, you are a big dessert guy then? Making homemade desserts in the off-season?”
Joel smiled with a nod. “Guilty. I enjoy cooking, have ever since Sarah came along and gave me a reason to learn how to do it well.” He loved sharing this with you, both the cooking and the details about each other.
By the time the pernil was ready to eat, everyone was giddy with hunger. Conversation and teasing were boisterous as everyone moved between the stations to taste the dishes, noting the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) differences between them all. A vote was taken, and Tess announced the winner once everyone had eaten their fill.
“It was really close, but it looks like Donna and Doug are the winners! Joel and Brit were a close second, but that just means they were the first losers,” Tess teased while the guests cheered.
As the guests moved to the seating area in the main salon, the crew dispersed to start cleanup duties.
“Nice work, Cap,” you said, flashing Joel a small smile as you scurried away, headed to the galley with a pile of dirty dishes in your arms. After spending the past few hours so close to Joel, the yearning for him was overwhelming and you needed some time away from him, and everyone else. Dish duty in the galley would be perfect for that.
“Hey, wait! I, uh, was hoping we could…” And, once again, you were gone before he could finish a sentence. It was a habit of yours that he was beginning to seriously dislike.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was early, possibly pre-sunrise though it was hard to tell down on the crew deck, when Sarah ducked into your cabin and plopped her overly perky self on your bunk. “Morning sunshine!”
“Too loud. Take your noise and be gone, you witch!” you grumbled, burying your head beneath the covers.
The bunk above you creaked and Tess’ head peered over the edge, her long locks hanging down in waves. “Aww, come on, Brit. Let the girl have her fun.”
“I know what she’s trying to do, Tess and I want no part of it.” Your voice was muffled by the blanket, taking the edge off your tone.
“Oh, don’t be like that!” Sarah whined. “My dad seemed so happy last night. He loves to cook and it’s clear he enjoyed showing off his skills for you.”
“He’s obviously very good at it,” you admitted reluctantly, fingertips edging the blanket down a bit.
“Don’t I know it.” Sarah’s dark eyes, the ones that reminded you so much of her father’s, narrowed mischievously. “You know, you two were the actual winners last night.”
Brows furrowed; you pulled the blanket down to fully expose your face and stared at Sarah. “What are you talking about? Donna and Doug were the winners.”
“She’s right, Brit. Joel told me before the event to skew the results to make sure one of the guests won,” Tess admitted. “The primaries were actually second place.”
Hmmm, that certainly sounded like Joel. He was too humble.
“See, I told you he was worth the effort. You need to give him a chance.” Sarah’s voice was pleading, smile hopeful.
Sighing, you sat up and placed a hand on hers where it rested on your bed. “Sar, there’s no point when he won’t give me a chance. I’m not the problem here.”
“He’ll come around; I promise,” Sarah insisted. Tess nodded in agreement and the two women stared at you with insane smiles.
“Your eternal optimism is disturbing.” Falling back against your pillow, you pulled the blanket back over your head. “Don’t you two have work to do? I’m on late shift today, so I need a few more hours of sleep.”
Slipping in your earbuds, you tried your best to ignore thoughts of Joel as you drifted off to sleep once again. The weather had calmed overnight, and the yacht was already anchored at sea when you awoke a few hours later. After a quick breakfast, you arrived on deck to start your shift. The rest of the deck crew was already busy unloading the water toys and you jumped in to assist.
“Mornin’, sleeping beauty,” Tommy greeted you with a charming smile. “Can you help us put the jet skis in the water? Ellie’s on the davit controls today.”
“Hey Tommy,” you bumped his shoulder as you passed, smiling brightly in return. “Of course.”
Connor was already by the davit, connecting the lines to ready the first jet ski. You checked the connections and patted him on the back. Pulling one of the support lines tight, Tommy gave a thumbs up and both you and Connor grabbed the remaining lines, pulling them taut.
“Ok, El! Take it away, slow!” Tommy called.
Ellie’s brow pinched in concentration, fingers working the controls to first lift the jet ski off the deck, then extend it over the rail and lower it towards the water. She had been practicing lately, working on controlling the davit with finesse rather than jerky movements and too much speed. The last thing Ellie wanted was to be responsible for damaging the yacht or any of its equipment, so she wanted to be proficient at using the davit.
Eyes darting between the jet ski and Ellie, strong grip keeping your line tight, you were impressed with the smoothness of movement from Ellie’s handling of the davit. The only jostling was from the wind rather than the davit itself. The first jet ski went down without issue and Connor jumped into the water to drive the jet ski to the swim platform and tie it off.
“Connor man, stay down there. The next one is coming in a minute,” Tommy called out. “No sense coming back up here with how smooth that one went.”
The three of you repeated the process with the second jet ski while Connor waited on the swim platform. It was a little less steady this time, but the jet ski landed smoothly on the water, bobbing along with the ripples. Once again, Connor jumped into the water to disconnect the davit lines. Before he could release the rear line, the wake of a passing boat jostled the jet ski. Connor didn’t see it coming and it threw off his balance, his right arm extending instinctively to steady himself against the yacht’s hull.
His wet hand gave way against the slick surface as another wave lifted the jet ski and Connor toppled off the machine. It happened so fast, you and Tommy watching from the deck, when the waves hit. You were already jumping over the rail, plummeting into the water when Connor’s head bounced off the hull.
The tender was already in the water, having been the first thing the deck team offloaded before you joined them on deck, and Tommy sprinted down to the swim platform to jump into the small boat as Ellie frantically called for help over the radio. When you surfaced, you were grateful you landed nearby and Connor was wearing a lifejacket as he bobbed face down in the turquoise water, the slamming of his head against the yacht having knocked him out cold. You reached him in seconds, turning him over so his face was no longer submerged. He wasn’t breathing.
The tender appeared at your side, Tommy reaching over to pull you both aboard. He shouted up to Ellie to get in the water and secure the jet ski while you started CPR, and he steered the tender back to the swim platform where Joel was waiting. By your estimate, Connor was face down in the water for no more than 30 seconds, if that, and his breathing resumed after a dozen chest compressions. However, he remained unconscious, and you checked Connor over, noting a gash on his forehead and a broken left forearm. Flattening your palm over the gash, you attempted to stem the flow of blood.
Sarah appeared on the swim platform and assisted her dad in tying off the tender while Tommy helped you delicately bring Connor onto the yacht. “Help is on the way, should be here in a few minutes,” Joel declared. “Is he breathing?”
You nodded, breathless from the adrenaline rush, and placed the clean rag Sammy rushed to hand you to Connor’s forehead. “He’s still unconscious and has a broken arm,” Tommy spoke for you, his comforting hand clutching your shoulder.
“Shit,” Joel swore, his voice immediately drowned by the sound of a siren as a rescue boat approached.
You stumbled back, sliding down to sit on the platform as the rescue team took over. You were soaked, hands covered in Connor’s blood, a chill wracking your body as the last dregs of adrenaline dispersed. You watched, wide-eyed, as Connor was transported to the rescue vessel. Once the vessel departed, Joel rushed over to you, bending down to meet your gaze.
“Are you okay?” He spoke your name softly, his hands running over your head, shoulders, and arms, checking for any injuries. Joel’s touch left a trail of searing heat on your skin. The shivering was uncontrollable, and you stuttered out a positive response indicating you were ok. “Thank fuck,” he breathed, pulling you into an uncharacteristic hug, his body warm and strong against yours. You clutched to him like a lifeline as he led you inside and down to the crew deck. Once in your cabin, he turned the shower on and let the water heat up.
“Can you manage by yourself? Or do you want me to get Sarah or Tess?”
“I-I can manage, just need to warm up.” Slipping into the bathroom, the door closing with a soft click, you shed your wet clothes and climbed into the shower, steam rising around you. The immediate relief from the warmth of the water left you groaning.
“I’m going to send Sarah down to keep an eye on you. She’ll call me if you need anything. I have to get back to the guests,” Joel called through the door, hesitation in his voice like he didn’t want to leave you.
“Ok. Thank you, Joel,” you called back, grateful for him in that moment.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Once Joel was certain that you were going to be alright, his heart rate finally settled. Checking in with the guests to let them know what happened was easier than he anticipated – they were understandably concerned about the crew, specifically Connor’s condition, having witnessed at least part of the incident. Donna insisted that they were content to lounge on the sundeck and relax in the hot tub for the day to let the crew settle their nerves after the traumatic events.
On his way to the bridge, Joel also checked in with Tommy and the rest of the crew to make sure they were ok. Emmy was the most concerned, having grown close to the young man over the past few weeks. Talia comforted her as Joel reiterated the importance of safety awareness and let them all have an extended break while the guests relaxed.
“Join me on the bridge?” he looked to Tommy as he turned to exit the main salon. The brothers walked in silence until they were on the bridge where they were quickly joined by Frank. “So, we’re down a man on the deck crew. Early report on Connor is that he won’t be returning with that broken arm. I’ll reach out to the staffing agency to get a new deckhand.”
Tommy nodded. “In the meantime, we’ll work with a three-person crew.” It wouldn’t be the first time, nor the last. He always made it work.
“I’m happy to lend a hand where needed, Tommy,” Frank added. “It’d be good to get my hands dirty again.”
“Well, that’s settled then. I need to make a couple calls. Keep an eye on the crew?” Frank and Tommy assured Joel they had everything under control and left the bridge as Joel called the agency.
“Hi Marcia, it’s Captain Joel on Radiance. Listen, I need a deckhand asap.” Pausing to listen to her response, he added, “Any experience level is fine at this point.” Marcia assured him she’d be back in touch within an hour and ended the call.
Feeling like things were back under his control again, Joel settled into the captain’s chair with a heavy sigh. What a fucking day. Between yesterday’s bad weather and the events of today, this charter seemed doomed from the start, but at least the guests were laid back. The vibration of his phone drew Joel from his maudlin thoughts to find a text from Sarah.
Brit is all set. She’s resting for a bit and will be back on deck in an hour. She’s such a bad ass!
The grin that spread across his lips was involuntary at the mere mention of you and how highly his daughter thought of you.
Thanks baby girl. You doing okay?
I’m fine, Dad. You okay?
It’s been a day already, but I’m good.
Love you.
Love you too baby girl.
The phone was still in his hand when it rang moments later. “Marcia, what’s the good word?” Joel stood from the chair, nervous energy making him need to move around. “That was quick work! He can start tomorrow, great! That’s one less thing to worry about.”
After discussing a few more details, Joel thanked Marcia for her help. They’d have a new deckhand onboard tomorrow morning. Perfect.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You were holed up on the bridge on overnight anchor watch, gaze hovering over the weather radar to keep an eye on the wind speed. The wind picked up again as the evening went on and Joel was concerned the anchor would drag, so you were dedicated to anchor watch as you were already scheduled for the late shift.
After the day’s events, you were content to sit on the quiet bridge while everyone else slept. Normally, you would bring a book or your earbuds and listen to some music to keep yourself entertained during the quiet hours, but tonight the silence was soothing. The night sky was clear, the sparkle of a thousand stars shining down around a half-moon making you feel like you could be anywhere in the world.
Only one thought attempted to distract you – Joel’s presence in the captain’s quarters right behind the bridge. He was in there, deep asleep, dreaming God knows what and all you could think about was what it would be like being in there with him.
The way he cared for you earlier, held you after Connor’s rescue, made you forget about your plan to steer clear of him for a while. It was a losing battle when he was right there.
Perhaps you should just resign yourself to pining over the man and leave it at that. No other potential solutions were working anyway.
At four o’clock in the morning, you heard the creak of a door followed by the heavy padding of bare feet on the floor. Turning your head to the side, Joel emerged from around the corner and your heart melted to a puddle at the sight of his bedhead. Despite being forty years old, he looked like a grumpy little boy with the sleepy frown marring his face, hair askew, pouty lips drawn in a wide yawn.
You couldn’t stop yourself beaming at him, now knowing what he looked like when first waking up. It was endearing as all hell.
Squinted eyes met yours in the darkness and the bridge brightened just from the smile in his gaze. Joel was just as happy to see you as you were to see him. This mutual pining thing was no joke.
“G’morning,” he mumbled, sliding in beside you at the small table along the wall behind the captain’s chair. “Everythin’ going good?”
“Mmhmm,” you hummed, basking in the press of his sleepy warmth against your right side. “Just peachy.”
“Hmm, good.” Joel tilted his head back against the wall, still half asleep and you wondered why he was even up.
“What are you doing up so early?”
His head lolled toward you, dark eyes shining in the low light emanating from the helm. “I could hear you thinking out here and just wanted to be near you… make sure you were ok.”
Your breath hitched as you stared at him, searching his eyes for confirmation of what you just heard. It was another crest on this never-ending roller coaster with Joel Miller. “I’m ok. Just lots to think about, you know?”
“I do,” his head bobbed. “I figured we could think about it together.”
HBO TLOU Fanfic
First Impressions
Summary:
In HBO's TLOU we were shown Ellie's first impressions of Dina. But what did Dina think of Ellie and Joel?
Notes:
At around 21:50 you can also see Dina walking by the hot stations, bottom left side
————————————
Dina had been late to lunch, held up by her friend Jesse endlessly talking about how he'd been approved for group patrols. She liked the guy, had become friends, but sometimes he just didn't know when to stop talking. And she recognized that was saying a lot coming from her.
Now there'd only be sandwiches, the hot bar undoubtedly closed or out of food. She shouldn't complain. This was a paradise she'd somehow found and been welcomed into. Even a few months ago a sandwich would have been a rare, exquisite treat that she'd have been so, so grateful for. And she was! She definitely was, but cold fried egg sandwiches weren't her favorite. That's what was always left over.
To her surprise the buffet was still open and had a varied selection left. A stranger caught her eye as she dished up a few stations away. The older man was loading his plate overfull with squash and carrots and chunks of stewed deer. It wasn't that unusual for a new-comer to arrive; Dina would estimate Jackson had a population of a few hundred. Every few weeks a survivor or two would be vetted and allowed in.
An apprehensive but relieved look, like a burden had been lifted or a fear quelled, was etched on his face. What was missing was the overwhelming wonder and happiness usually present on new faces upon seeing the abundance and variety of food, the electricity, the fresh water. Dina concluded he was a reasonably jaded man, no doubt. Was he here to stay or just passing through?
Her curiosity was piqued when a girl sidled up to him, quickly plucking the last filet of trout from the tongs he was holding. The man gave a disapproving look and speared his fork into the fish, effectively cutting it in half before sliding a piece from her plate onto his. The girl broke out into a wide grin at the take-back before moving on to the next station.
As Dina gathered silverware she kept a discreet eye on the pair. Both the girl and the man seemed rough around the edges, a sign of being out in the wilderness or open cities for too long. Not too dirty, but worn enough. Their clothing and shoes faded and coming apart. The man's face held the seriousness of a hardened survivor, the girl's less so. Her demeanor was more defensive, a front put on to seem tough and unafraid. The look was well-recognized; Talia often had a similar standoffish posture. Then Dina herself while traveling alone after her sister died. It didn't come naturally though, and upon her entry into Jackson the facade fell away quickly.
The man went back towards the tables, but the girl continued to roam, taking in everything with open delight. She ate as she went, holding a piece of bread in one hand and plate in the other. Dina furrowed her brows at how fingers were licked of gravy as the girl would pick pieces of meat off plate and plop them into mouth. Her sleeves wiped her face clean. There were napkins everywhere. Surely she knew how to use a napkin?
Once at the patrol station near the door the strange girl's eyes lit up. Stocked on that table were portable and dried foods that would stay good, easy to transport on a shift outside of the community's walls. The girl glanced around, seeing if anyone was watching, before stuffing an apple in her pocket. A handful of nuts followed. Then fistfuls of jerky were snatched and placed deep into pants pockets.
Dina couldn't help but laugh under her breath. It was like watching a squirrel get ready for winter, flitting from one area to the next, storing until bursting at the seams. Stuffing her face until it puffed. It was funny, this little string bean with a big appetite.
Dina continued to sit and eat and quietly observe. They were with Maria and Tommy, two of the governing body that ran Jackson. They must be staying! A welcome meal was always in order for new arrivals. At least one or two council members would take the time to properly introduce themselves over a meal. A kind of orientation to Jackson, and to make people feel they belonged.
Excitement was building in Dina at the possibility of another friend around her age. How old was she? Kinda small, but could just be an underfed QZ kid.
The pair were now protectively hunched over and scarfing the spread laid out before them, like it could be snatched away at any moment. Dina raised her eyebrows at the slurping of soup, heard all the way over to her at the far end of the hall. She wasn't judging, she had been nearly the same way when she'd gotten here. The new girl just seemed...really interesting. A lot of things about this girl were intriguing. Her mannerisms. The way she carried herself. The audacity to steal all the jerky.
Dina finished and took her plate to the bussing station. Bunching a napkin in hand, she approached the trash bin nearest to their table. She wanted one more closer look, curiosity becoming too much.
She was startled by an aggressive, "What?" volleyed her way. A deer in headlights, not expecting to be caught and called out like that, Dina hurried off. As she left the hall she shook her head in amusement. First impressions were wrong. Maybe this girl was less like a squirrel and more like a feral, rabid cat!
No one? Well, I'll do it by myself.
Damian's nemesis
1. Damian is a character that already faced some of the typical dilemas that writters put on the characters. Things like why is not okay to kill or a counterpart of his ideals are concepts that he already explored on the moment.
The first possible nemesis was Nobody. A man who resents Bruce for his past and that put Damian in a situation that forced him to decide between the good and bad.
Nobody doesn't have a moral sceme, he kills bad people but not because justice but because pleasure. We already knew what happened to Nobody and I think he had a potential to be Damian's nemesis but I still found satisfactory his ending.
With this villian, Damian already explored the concepts of the moralities and his own decisions, so I think it would be useless to put a new nemesis with the same concept, because it would be boring and repetetive.
2. Putting villians like the Joker is kinda useless too. Aside of other characters (cof cof Batman cof cof) we already know that Damian wouldn't have the patience to this type of villian, so he wouldn't kill them but probably would make something that would easily stop them.
3. Talia is not a real villian and Ra's as a Damian's villian too cliche.
4. Deathstroke. Repeat after me, it's too creepy and it's boring that Deathstroke would be his nemesis, I thought it's more interesting see his interactions with Dick than with Damian.
Deathstroke is just there because Damian is Robin and a child, there's nothing more and the status of DC trying to relate them is even more disgusting.
Now, let's make a nemesis to Damian.
1. Damian's nemesis should be someome who is not strong physical but mentally.
Damian is a character that people wouldn't believe that he would end up in a toxic relationship as him as the victim, but let me explain why I think otherwise.
Damian's weakness is how much he loves the closer people to him. Especially Bruce and Talia.
We had seen how these last two had done really bad stuff to him and he is still able to accept them pretty much easily with some words.
Bruce could said the most horrible stuff to him, Damian would be mad but eventually Bruce would apologize and Damian would accept him back. Same happened with Talia.
So, now you see the patrol?
Victims of manipulation usually end up having a similar cycle on their relationships, so Damian, even with a strong personality, his heart is pretty soft to the ones that got closer to him.
Damian's nemesis should be someone who manipulates, not only Damian but also the audience. So we could actually experimentate throught Damian's eyes.
This person would looked kind and dedicated.
Maybe be a father figure or a brotherly figure, but that slowly came closer to Damian to the point that Damian could believed him when he "apologize".
This person should play with Damian's feelings, encapsulate him and manipulates him, he should hits Damian's emotional points.
He would be the cause of why Damian is crying but also the one who is "consoling" him.
Be a real toxic relationship.
I think that would be an actual challenge to Damian, that his enemy is not someone who is stronger physicall but mentally.
I think this provide a lot of awareness of men in toxic relationship and it would show a side that not a lot of people would see of the character.
In appearence, like I said, should be someone who looked really kind or that gave you that protective vibe, so the audience is also victim of the manipulation.
Someone who looked like Joe of TLoU or with similar feautures.
had another tlou talk with my sister and I have SO MANY thoughts :))
this is mainly just season 2 thoughts cause I'm getting to the end of the gameplay and I have thoughts about it for the show! cause we live in fear and excitement for season 2, so here are our thoughts!
are they gonna split the season in half? cause I think it would Too much to keep going back and forth between Abby and Ellie's perspectives since both of them have so much story to their respective parts
HBO has done like 20 episodes? for seasons before, right? maybe? if so, make it 18 episodes. maybe 8 per person. the first episode maybe starts off of like it does in the game, have both perspectives then The Thing to finish it off and leave us suffering for a week. and then the last episode be dedicated to Ellie on the farm and that cutscene :(
OR go through and still split the season, but start off with Abby. let us know who she is before you kill Joel. it would be a smoother transition from season 1 to 2, I think. just start the episode with the flashback of That, then give us the 2 perspectives and That Other Scene
I would say go through and do Abby first, then Ellie, but it would make everyone hate Ellie cause of what she did in her grief, but it could still be good. that way we know who everyone is, but you could still keep it a surprise and do Ellie first. I do not know, but I like the idea of having Abby first, that way we know who she is and why she did what she did
speaking of That scene, give us more of the after. there's concept art of Dina and Jesse finding Joel and Ellie in that basement. it would destroy us all, but I think it would be bittersweet? to have that scene. but also to keep it private, cause they did it for Riley and Bill and Frank
going off the last point, give us more after Abby found Ellie in the theater. what happened? no one was in the best shape. did Dina have to rip an arrow out of herself, then go help Ellie up and then do the same for Tommy? did Ellie crawl to Dina to help her? what happened, who helped them??? cause no one in Jackson knows where they are, other than Maria, but she doesn't know the specifics and there's no implication that she even went to Seattle. so who helped them?? how did they all, minus Jesse, survive that attack?
I think those are all the plot points, so onto the additional stories!
expand more on Dina PLEASE. she talked a bit about her time on the road with Talia, but you can give us more for sure! if you were able to give us an hour long 10K self insert fic for Bill and Frank, you can give us more on Dina (please please please I love her so much). maybe also her pregnancy? cause she had it so rough in the beginning, did it get any easier? at least maybe her and Ellie moving out of Jackson
give us more on Cat!!! GIVE US THE TATTOO!!! where'd she get the supplies? how'd she teach herself? WHAT WAS SHE LIKE???
GIVE ELLIE A DOG, SHE DESERVES A DOG, GIVE HER A DOG
also maybe expand more on the ending? I was telling my sister it hurt like a scab. if you think of the whole game like that, then the end is ripping the scab off. like Ellie was gonna forgive Joel? and then that's it? that's the end? it hurts SO BAD, give us a little more, please :) although maybe not (I guess smh) cause they stayed true to the ending of the first game
ooo maybe give us more for Yara and Lev? don't know when you'd throw it in the episode/season, but I think it would be so cool to see more of them
I think these were all the thoughts! if not, I will add more later :) we live in constant fear for season 2, so I figured I'd share some of the loose brain thoughts. I'm just REALLY curious as to how they're gonna film this season. I think Craig or Neil said season 3 might be unlikely? it was a while ago, so I am RIDING on the fact it's all gonna be in one season. I don't think they should go back and forth between Abby and Ellie's perspectives, though, cause I think it would be too confusing. unless they can find a way to do it? I don't know, I guess we shall find out
Was that [HAILEE STEINFELD]? Oh no no, that was just [DINA], a [CANON CHARACTER] from [TLOU]. They are [NINETEEN] years old, use [SHE/THEY], and [ARE] aware that they are not actually from Washington DC. Too bad they can’t stray from this city for long.
Tumblr media
Dina was orphaned at a young age, leading her older sister, Talia to raise her.[6] At some point prior to 2033, Dina moved to Jackson, Wyoming, and joined the community under the leadership of Maria. During their trip to Seattle, Dina told Ellie her first kill was when she was ten, stabbing a man who tried to attack her mother. She also became acquainted with Jesse, another survivor who lived within the settlement.
Dina fell asleep at the movie theater and woke up here when she came too. She has been in Washington D.C for two years and her son is almost 1.
