i feel like mountain goats tumblr is connected enough and niche enough a community we could make a decision en masse about a back-up place to have community—i'm not jumping ship, i'll be on tumblr until it's fully deleted, but i'd like to have a failsafe for when it does eventually die.
what options are there out there? is anyone else interested? are there older, inactive blogs on here people would want to archive somehow before this website goes under? is there a way of doing so in an organized fashion?
what do you all see as the central pieces of tmg posting? what format of posts or types of sharing and discussion and joking and sillyness and creation of art are priorities when u think about making community with other fans?
please, please treat this post as a discussion even if we don't know each other. tmg tumblr is very dear to my heart. let's stick together.

tagged by @duelsong for my 2023 favs.
babe, char!
hi <3
happy new year's char! thanks for the tag
books:
hangsaman by shirley jackson (I still think about this novel, I've reread it a few times since finishing it earlier this year)
a psalm for the wild built by becky chambers (really loved this one, I need to read the other two in the series)
zen in art of writing by ray bradbury (he's the folksy old grandfather I never had)
blood in the machine by brian merchant (covers the history of ludditism in the west, really great read)
movies (I don't watch enough film but I'll take a shot):
bottoms (it was a genuinely fun comedy)
the banshees of inisherin (I know the old man friendship break up is an allegory for the Irish civil war but it perfectly captures the loneliness and restlessness and claustrophobia of a small town and how people can tear each other up. you could unironically have the same plot in small town rural/ suburban america. also just the emotional damage of the entire plot being that yes your friends does secretly hate you. Padraic under reacted honestly)
albums:
substance - new order
to bring you my love - PJ harvey
rid of me - PJ harvey
jenny from thebes - the mountain goats (not my favorite tmg album but I have a soft spot for jenny)
tagging @fiapple and @kikismovingcastle I'm late to this so no pressure but happy new year

First Few Desperate Hours and Transcendental Youth!
First Few Desperate Hours: I am very fond of And the sun peeks in / Like a killer through the curtain. A classic tMG simile, taking something traditionally considered beautiful and good and making it sinister and terrible. The sun does peek in like a killer through the curtain when you're hung over, or when you have something coming up that you're dreading. It's an incongruous and surprising simile that nevertheless is instantly recognizable on an emotional level.
Transcendental Youth: There's a lot to like about this song. The horns, of course, and the excellent drum line, and the way it seems to have been a direct inspiration for the album art. I haven't listened to it in ages. I really like Sing, sing for ourselves alone / Speak into the microphone because it feels like a fourth wall break, and JD speaking directly to the audience. This one's for us, it's about us, sing it with me. The whole album is about doing whatever it takes not to kill yourself, so it seems fitting that the title track would break the fourth wall. It's like he's taking a step back in the studio and offering us the mic for a moment there. It's a good feeling.

🎶✨ When you get this u have to put 5 songs u actually listen to, publish. Then, send this ask/tag 10 of your favorite followers ✨🎶
tagged by @artbyblastweave
1. Cream and Bastards Rise—Only really got into Harvey Danger recently, but this has become a “be compelled to queue up every other hour” song for me very quickly. Playing in the background as Blake and Rose Jr. strangle each other.
2. I Don’t Believe You—The Magnetic Fields. Always loved the opening to this, never heard an example of a song playing with the rhythm and stresses of a common phrase like it does. (Side note: I’m kinda surprised the Magnetic Fields aren’t part of the tumblr canon along with TMG, Lemon Demon, etc. How is 69 Love Songs not an integral part of the fandom animatic complex?)
3. Centipede—Patrica Taxxon. PT can be sort of hit-or-miss for me, but I really fell for this one. Haven’t really considered the potential of violent screamo for sensuality before, feels like an obvious oversight looking back.
4. Steal Smoked Fish—The Mountain Goats. While I tend to be more of a fan of the TMG songs with larger arrangements, this and the whole of Songs for Pierre Chuvin are a major exception to that rule.
5. Chaos Space Marine—Black Country, New Road. I have a bit of a hard time getting into....what would you call this genre? Art Punk? Avant-Prog? The type of stuff Squid and Black Midi are doing that AOTY is obsessed with. BCNR are the one group where I really understand the appeal, because this one one of my favorite songs to come out last year.

oh no!! i started my mountain goats chronological listen through, but forgot to include the extra lens/extra glenns albums 😳
luckily i’d only listened to the 1991-93 tmg stuff so far, so i still have time to slot in “infidelity” 😮‍💨
god, “martial arts weekend” adds another layer of chronological confusion to 2002 tho.. 😵‍💫 i think last time i slotted it in between ahwt and tallahassee, cos in some ways it does kinda sound like a halfway point between them.. 🤔

Swynrpwrimo Task #27 - Fairy Talent
[tracker]
I'm not good at anything actually cool like art or singing lmao and I didn't feel like making a gif pack so uhhh what about "accidentally making characters neurodivergent when you didn't plan to, but they clearly are" and "thinking too hard about their music taste" or "knowing what little bits they do in their daily life"
Here's a collection of music-based bits, vocal stims, etc that Mu-yeol will do with an explanation for each below! Not at all exhaustive lmao. Some of these are used as vocal stims others are just song-based "bits" he does.
Like Being Shot By A Bullet - Baek Ji Young
This is is a bit!
Technically this is, like a very popular sad Korean breakup type song, but Mu-yeol will reference it all the time. Like, if Nemo grabs the last dumpling or piece of kimbap as he's also reaching for it, he'll look at him and sing the line that translates to "like being shot by a bullet", as in like, "wow, beTRAYal"
Once In A Lifetime - Talking Heads
This is a bit! He'll use the "well! how did I get here?" sometimes when he walks into a room and forgot why lol
Taeyang Singing To The Crowd
This one is a stim, this moment has been memed on K-pop and Korean internet for years. Mu-yeol isn't super online, like he uses Spotify and reads John Darnielle's tweets, and there's some educational YouTube channels he's discovered and checks periodically for new nerd content, that's p much it, but this video has appeared in the Bae family WhatsApp chats so he knows it and it got stuck in his brain.
Feel Like Cinderella Naega Byeonhae!
Stim, lol. THIS one got stuck in his head because of it being played at K-pop dance night while he was working at Pixie's. And idk Nemo probably likes TXT and everyone who likes TXT got that line stuck on repeat when this song, Cat & Dog came out. Mu-yeol has listened to this song willingly maybe a total of twice but that line is in the stim rotation, comes out while cleaning the house a lot.
Foreign Object - The Mountain Goats
This one is a bit; if something, usually an inanimate object or Karen the squirrel annoys him, he'll deadpan "I'm gonna stab you in the eye with a foreign object."
No Spill Blood - Oingo Boingo
This one is a very ongoing bit and has been a stim off and on for like...over 20 years now. If it's a stim he'll repeat the chorus by himself. If it's in bit format, it's like a call and response between him and whoever else, usually if it's been quiet for too damn long. When Nemo was a kid, to tell him it was time to settle down and pay attention to him, he had to mix up the methods to get his attention. In the rotation was using the chorus of No Spill Blood. "Nam-min, What! Is the law?" "No spill blood!" "And who makes the rules?" "Someone else!" at this point little Nemo would usually come running to see what Appa was going to tell him to do. There was a variety of songs he'd make call and responses out of -- mostly much more Normal ones, a lot of Shinee or 1st gen K-pop songs, but that's probably the weirdest one. Anything that Nemo would've grown up listening to just because his father did could've been used.
Sinaloan Milk Snake Song - The Mountain Goats
This one's a stim lmao. Sometimes WILL do it on purpose though when he's trying to tell someone something - usually Nemo because Nemo gets all of his TMG references even though 95% of them are against his will, just by absorbing it growing up.
Beautiful Liar - Monsta X
This one's a stim, when he's under stimulated in his environment.
Monsta X is like, THE K-pop group he really likes independent of "oh, my son loves them so I got into them" or "I mean it's BTS! Nobody loves BTS more than middle-aged Koreans living abroad." There's a couple groups or artists he follows casually because everyone likes pop music to SOME extent and they make pop songs he likes, but Monsta X is the one he like...genuinely keeps up with. Like he will live-text his brother in the music industry in South Korea his reactions to the albums and music videos, he can tell you who is singing what line without looking it up, that's his silly little group he likes. Joohoney's verse on Beautiful Liar lives in his head rent free, and it's probably one of the songs he'd show someone to try and get them into the group too.
Cà Phê - Min
Stim! One of the man reasons he began learning Vietnamese tbh. Came across this song and "Ngồi uống cà phê đến tối / Không giờ rồi mà anh chưa tới / Cà phê cứ tí tách rơi / Anh quên mất em rồi" simply took over his life. This is also a great song to zone out and like physically stim to, just put in on and do your little dancey dance to while you're doing chore. Idk how to explain it but something about it just scratches the neurodivergent brain.
No Children - The Mountain Goats
Stim!
He'll just be reading in his room and quietly go "...and I hope you die! ... I hope we both die!" for no reason

I've always wondered why John repeatedly says his guitar skill + compositional creativity has improved a lot from his early days (obviously everyone's does as they practice, not what I mean)—so much of his early lowest-fi stuff is really experimental and fun sounding to me! E.g. "Chinese House Flowers" with its G7, F7 E7 ending to say nothing of the main chord progression in the song, "Alpha Gelida" which is just fucking amazing, the coroner's gambit studio version of "Shadow Song" which is soooo much more powerful than the I V centric version of it I've heard live, tunes like "bluejays and cardinals" or "new Britain" that make heavy use of suspended chords... And a lot of these early tunes have little melodic picking parts in them too. I love all his stuff but to me the boombox stuff is a lot more sonically interesting than the heavily folk/country inspired instrumentation he sometimes uses on later songs. It's different and a lot of the new stuff is harmonically complex too, don't get me wrong, but I feel like he underrates some of the lyricism and songwriting of his early stuff. Sorry for the huge ask but I wondered if you had thoughts on this
ayyyy never apologize for a big ask!! i love getting stuff like this. give me your thoughts 😈
I get what you mean, though. And I agree with you -- I love the newer stuff deeply and with every inch of my soul but there is something very... interesting, and special, about the lo-fi era of tmg music. Imo it's a little less accessible, it makes you work a little harder as a listener to figure out what the hell's goin' on, and that makes it a different experience from the newer stuff. Not inherently good or bad, but very very different.
The first thing your question brought to mind for me is how he thought that The Sunset Tree was the last record he was ever going to get to make: "But then after we moved here, I, you know, I wasn't quite sure what we were gonna do and our original contract with 4AD was for three records, and I sort of, because I'm me and I'm kind of defeatist and I have a thing about worrying that nobody actually likes me and that someday this will all be taken away, you know, I was like, well, we're gonna get to the third album of the contract and then you have to go back to the nursing business, right. So that's why I sort of, like, opened up and said 'well, I'm gonna tell a story that is true for the third record 'cause it'll probably be the last Mountain Goats record that ever gets made', was the thinking in my mind." (source) (if anyone has a video where he says this speech, that'd be great! I only know it from the wikia page on tst).
And he thought this after he had made ahwt and tallahassee.
John Darnielle can probably see in a lot more detail than we can how and in what ways he's grown as an artist, because obviously he's privy to all of the inner workings of his music. I can speak as a person who's been doing creative things for my entire life, including songwriting, that having to interact with your old work can be incredibly painful. Not just in a cringy "I can't believe I ever made that" way, but also because it might remind you of old times, events, or feelings that you'd really rather leave behind. It can be easier and better for your mental health to diminish your old work to cringe, unintelligent drivel, novice shit, etc etc to make it hurt less. Obviously I'm not John Darnielle and am definitely speaking from my own experiences, but I feel like it's a valid theory. I also come from a mentally ill place, and was abused as a child, and all of that frequently makes its way into my art.
It's also possible that as cool and fun and experimental as his old stuff is, it just isn't what he wants his music to sound like! In the early days of tmg there's a really good chance that the music sounds more experimental because it is. He was probably playing around a lot more, trying to figure out what he liked and how to make those sounds. This is also something to consider in the context of the evolving nature of the band. We've got our core group figured out now (John, Jon, Peter, and instrumental mastermind Matt) but in the early days there were tons of lineup changes and studio changes and production + mixing differences from album to album, and even from song to song, especially in the case of the triplet comp albums of 1999 (Ghana, Protein Source of the Future... Now!, and Bitter Melon Farm) and in the case of an album/ep/etc that had recordings from radio stations. If I remember the liner notes of the 2013 ahwt rerelease correctly, ahwt is the only album that the descriptor of "one guy alone in his house with a guitar (and the Panasonic RX-FT500)". I suppose that now, Songs for Pierre Chuvin also fits this description :)
Honestly, I think he underrates his old stuff too. There will never be a love song that hits me in quite the same way that Masher does. Never another song that makes me feel as hopeful as Onions and Elijah do. Hearing Water Song at the show on the 19th, I mean, it was transcendent! It's really beautiful, special material; that being said I also understand why he might shy away from it.
I hope this at least sort of is what you were talking about? If not, feel free to send in another ask and I will happily discuss more! This is my jam, and we all know how jd feels about jam...

Hey, TMG. People have been saying that you traced the underswap cast artwork...
Is this true??
no i didn't. sure, I used the og art pop made as reference. but I did NOT trace it. just because it's in the same style and characters have the same poses does not mean its traced. its called a redraw. redraws are taking a piece of existing artwork and using the pose and style to make smth new out of it. (a lot of artists do this btw) tracing is taking a piece of artwork and shamelessly copying it. which if you look at my version of pops art. I DID NOT do. sure characters SOME are the same. but most of them were perfect to begin with in the original, i just lightly touched them up with how I draw these characters. so no I didn't trace. and never will.

This cured my boredom for a little bit. Was making a few new music playlists and thought.. hmm. I wonder what kind of music the RFA listens to? So, I made this. For no reason at all.
What Kind of Music the RFA + V/Saeran Listen To:
Saeyoung/707:
- (I always see people writing that he’d listen to all star or other cringe meme songs because that’s what seems to be his entire personality, but I like to think he has more substance than that and listens to songs that don’t have to do with memes.)
- He definitely listens to rap/hip-hop.
- Can you not imagine him driving down the road in his cars, windows down, music blasting?
- He listens to his music uber loud in his headphones while working.
- His favorite artist is probably Tyler the creator, i mean, how could you not love him.
- Listens to Mac Miller when he’s sad :(
PLAYLIST:
Who Dat Boy - Tyler the Creator
Stutter - Freddie Dredd
Evil Fantasy - Freddie Dredd
Sweatpants - Childish Gambino
Bounce - Logic
Dead Wrong - Notorious B.I.G.
Movement - Oliver Tree
Stick to Your Guns - Watsky
Both - Gucci Mane
No Sleep Till Brooklyn - Beastie Boys
Can I Kick It - A Tribe Called Quest
No Limit - G Easy
Circles - Mac Miller
Broke Bitch - TMG (lol)
Bonfire - Childish Gambino
I THINK - Tyler the Creator
Good News - Mac Miller
I - Kendrick Lamar
FACE - Brockhampton
King Kunta - Kendrick Lamar
Lovely Things Suite: Knots - Watsky
Zen:
- (Similar to Saeyoung, I don’t believe Zens entire personality revolves around musicals, he probably doesn’t listen to them that often imo.)
- I like to think he’s a... well rounded individual when it comes to music
- Listens to anything and everything.
- I could see him listening to the same music as Seven, but is also very into 70s-90s rock like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the like.
- He runs listening to all of his music on shuffle and doesn’t have a specific playlist so there’s never a certain vibe to it— it really is all over the place.
- In addition to Seven’s playlist, here’s Zen’s
PLAYLIST:
Funny Face - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Santeria - Sublime
Badfish - Sublime
The Luck You Got - The High Strung

Hurt Like Mine - The Black Keys
Gap - The Kooks

Yoosung:
- Yoosung likes more upbeat music, maybe more new age/alternative pop
- Listens to music every time he tries to study, but usually get distracted by it and starts to sing along instead of actually doing his work
- Is probably trying to branch out of his style, Seven and Zen try to convince him to listen to their favorite genres
- The three of them always argue about who has the best taste in music lol
- He’s constantly wondering if his music is “manly” enough (it’s okay yoosung it’s just music)
- If this dude gets drunk and hears any of this music he goes absolutely wild and dances all over the place

Circles - Post Malone
Unbearably White - Vampire Weekend
Tiny Umbrella - Coast Modern

Jumin:
- this guy has 2 modes and that’s it: classical bitch or music that has words
- He appreciates the fine art of classical music and listens to it when he has work to get done or when he’s trying to relax.
- If he’s in a good mood he’ll put on a playlist that includes “music with actual lyrics!”
- It’s a dad playlist. Billy Joel, Billy Joel, Billy Joel, Elton John, The Beatles, Billy Joel.
- He likes Billy Joel. Jumin has a dad personality you can’t convince me otherwise lol
- He tried to branch out but can get very picky in his interests. “I don’t like this guitar riff— change it”
- Either way his 2 modes are apparent in his playlists

- She loves to dance, so a lot of her songs and just songs that she’ll never be able to refuse to move her feet to!
