Samurai's ranks and dress code in Late Edo period
AMAZING reference chart put together by Nadeshico Rin, showing the different attires worn by the men of the buke class in and about Edo Castle. OP stresses the chart is by no means exhaustive - but it helps picturing things SO MUCH!
For easier reading, I have adapted the chart with english translation. Rin has also created illustrations detailing each attire, I'll translate those in coming days under the tag "samurai kimono".
You'll find the transliteration below cut:
The court ranks - Mibun 身分 or Ikai (位階)
Find more about the exact titles here.
一位 Ichii (First court rank)
三位 Sanmi (Third court rank) and 四位 Shii (Fourth court rank)
Goi 五位 (Fifth court rank)
Omemie ijô 御目見 以上, the "upper" vassals allowed to request audience with the shogun
Omemie ika 御目見 以下, the "lesser" vassals (not allowed to request audience with the shogun)
Rin does not mention the second court rank (二位 Nii) so I am not sure where this one is supposed to go ^^;
The clan/families - Kamei 家名
徳川将軍家 Tokugawa shôgunke (Tokugawa Shogun clan)
Tokugawa gosankyo (Secondary Tokugawa branch clans: Tayasu, Shimizu, and Hitotsubashi)
三奉行 Sanbugyô, & 下三奉行 Shimosan bugyô (magistrates, governors)
旗本 Hatamoto (general term for upper-rank vassals of the Tokugawa)
御家人 Gokenin (general term for lower-rank vassals of the Tokugawa)
Outfits TPO (Time, Place, Occasion)
第一礼服 (大礼 など) Daiichi raifuku (tairei nado) - Most formal outfit worn during State/important ceremonies, etc.
礼服 (正月など) Raifuku (Shogatsu nado) - Formal outfit, worn for events like New Year, etc.
通常礼服 (節句など) Tsûjô raifuku (sekku nado) - Regular formal outfit, worn during seasonal festivals, etc.
平服 Heifuku - Everyday outfit
Type of outfits
Rin has released separated charts detailing the different costumes. You'll find them translated here in coming days.
束帯 Sokutai - old ceremonial court dress, first worn by Heian nobility. Attire includes the 笏 shaku (flat ritual sceptre), and 冠 kanmuri hat.
衣冠 Ikan - old ceremonial court dress, much more simpler than sokutai
布衣 Hoi - "plain" 狩衣 kariginu (which were informal clothes worn by the nobility from the Heian period and onwards)
素襖 Suô - ceremonial dress of the lower-ranked samurai
直垂 Hitatare - ceremonial court robe
狩衣 Kariginu - patterned kariginu (informal clothes worn by the nobility from the Heian period and onwards)
大紋 Daimon - 直垂 hitatare with large family crests
直衣 Nôshi - everyday robes which were first worn by males of the imperial family during Heian era, and then spread among nobility, etc.
長上下 Naga Kamishimo - outfit pairing a sleeveless ceremonial robe called 肩衣 kataginu, with trailing pants called 長袴 nagabakama
半上下 Han Kamishimo - outfit pairing a sleeveless ceremonial robe called 肩衣 kataginu, with ankle lenght pants called 半袴 hanbakama

Beginning my long, long quest to draw our entire Lancer team with their mechs at LL3! Yes even the Gorgon *laughs cries chews glass* Here's the team's mechanic, stuntman, and youtuber-turned-Lancer, JW, who HA gifted this shiny new Tokugawa with zero special interest whatsoever. :)

Valentine - Harrison Armory Tokugawa
This has been, by far and away, my most difficult edit. But, after MANY hours today, the Ramlethal Tokugawa is finished. As is my sanity!

Put caution to the wind with the Harrison Armory Tokugawa. A custom-tailored reactor design with direct-fuel-to-weapon feed system ensures your weapon of choice will be star-hot. If you're looking for a little extra "oomph", our stable Overclock system will put you directly into the hot seat. With increased fuel flow, hotter weapons, and a glowing target on your back, not a single millisecond will go to waste with boredom. The Tokugawa is always the star of any battle, through flashy moves and actual emissive heat release.
For all the adrenaline junkies and those who like to ride the line between life and death as closely as possible, the Tokugawa is the frame for you. After all, your enemies can't damage you if their chassis are glowing piles of scrap.
Harrison Armory, Superior by Design.

A side note about Japan and queerness: I wrote a thesis about the history of homosexuality in Japan in uni, so I feel qualified to comment on it. Gay and trans identities were absolutely not invented in English speaking countries in the 20th century, they are the ones who invented homophobia. Japan in the middle ages and up until the end of the 19th century was extremely gay and had a very open gay culture, bisexuality was considered the norm. The samurai, who were the ruling class were extremely gay and Buddhism didn't have any history of homophobia, so both the dominant religion and the political elites were not homophobic and were encouraging same sex relationships among men. Japan not being super queer is a fairly recent (20th century) development. The terms that were used back then to describe queerness were also different and it is not useful to try and describe these identities with modern terms, but if you look at old primary sources, then there was probably a lot of conflating of what we would today call trans and gay. Japan is not a pure desexualized heterosexual place from a shoujo manga. If anyone wants to read more, I would recommend the book "Male Colors: The Construction of Homosexuality in Tokugawa Japan" by Gary P. Leupp. (there are also a bunch of other good sources, but this is the one I would recommend first). So yeah, don't let the weebs tell you you are pushing an LGBT agenda on Japan, the period of Japanese history in which homosexuality and transness were considered normal is way longer than the non gay period.

thoughts on making a tokugawa/orchis build viable? they're my two favorite frames and i would love to combine some weird shit for maximum fuckery if you have any thoughts :]
So I presume that you wanted me to make you something that uses the Orchis frame with Tokugawa systems, since because he Orchis is an altframe and doesn't really have any systems of its own and is entirely contingent on the Black Witch license.
-- SSC ORCHIS @ LL6 -- [ LICENSES ] HA Tokugawa 3, SSC Black Witch 2, HORUS Pegasus 1 [ CORE BONUSES ] Improved Armament, Superior by Design [ TALENTS ] Nuclear Cavalier 3, Duelist 2, Combined Arms 2, Skirmisher 2 [ STATS ] HULL:4 AGI:2 SYS:0 ENGI:2 STRUCTURE:4 HP:21 ARMOR:1 STRESS:4 HEATCAP:10 REPAIR:6 TECH ATK:-1 LIMITED:+1 SPD:6 EVA:12 EDEF:10 SENSE:10 SAVE:15 [ WEAPONS ] Integrated: Fuel Rod Gun FLEX MOUNT: Torch MAIN/AUX MOUNT: Magnetic Cannon / Nexus (Light) [ SYSTEMS ] Personalizations, LUCIFER-Class NHP x3, Hunter Lock, Ferrous Lash, Type-3 Projected Shield, Armament Redundancy
I call this one Fundamental Forces.
It's not really a particularly focused build; this is the Lancer equivalent of Magic the Gathering's "Five Colour Good Stuff." There aren't any particularly cohesive themes here, just good stuff that's unlikely to let you down. We're gonna use Magnetic Cannon and Ferrous Lash to smash people into things and then throw our shield at them. We're gonna use LUCIFER with Nuclear Cavalier to make our Torch do absurd damage. We're gonna throw fuel rods at people to cool our mech. We're gonna zip around the battlefield with Skirmisher. We're gonna get into melee range and have soft cover because of Combined Arms.
It won't be a standout build but it'll be pretty fun, I think.

What happens to Arikoto is so tragic I had to stop watching Ooku for a bit. It was just too hard to watch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Spoilers below; TW rape
Eventually I did finish watching Ooku and have too many thoughts buzzing in my head.
First of all, Arikoto is voiced to perfection by Mamoru Miyano in the Japanese version. Just the softest and most gentle intonations reflecting Arikoto’s personality so well. (The voice was so familiar and when I looked him up, I realized he’d also done Chrollo in Hunter x Hunter - another favorite character!)
Throughout the series, other men in the Ooku constantly remark on Arikoto’s shining presence and his dignified mien. There is a divine light about him in the ugly world of the ooku, court politics, and the threat of the plague. Even though he is forced to renounce his vows as a monk, he remains a caregiver at heart. We see this when he tends carefully and alone to Kasuga in her last days (despite everything she put him through). He is also the only one who takes care of the men dying of the red face pox inside the Ooku. He takes care of those who have been abandoned. But I also think this caregiving is a form of penance for the guilt he carries (the monk, sexworkers and others who were killed because of him).
It is his kindness that first draws him to Chie (pretending to be Iemitsu) despite her cruelty (more on that in another post). Arikoto’s love for Chie was such a tragic romance. He is forced into the Ooku after confinement and rape. He is forced to renounce his vows by Kasuga so that he can father Chie’s children. He ends up falling in love with Chie and wants to be with her - in more ways than one. And after all that violence, it turns out that he is …infertile. The universe is an unfair one and this was just a devastating blow. Arikoto is a changed man by the end of the show but his kindness and regard for life and people remains true. He can no longer wear the clothing of a monk but it was his calling to tend to those who needed him and he stays true to that calling to the end.
Although he is forced into the Ooku, in the end, he is chained to the Ooku not out of duress but due to the bonds of love. He stays in the Ooku to be with Chie, and later to fulfill her dying wish to be a father figure to her daughter. In trying to give the men in the Ooku purpose and some measure of joy, he actually ends up formalizing the system that we see as harmful in the first episode of the show.
Personally I found it hard to tell what Arikoto is feeling by the end of the show. His grief over Chie’s death (at a very young age) may be tempered by the fact that she is now free of the roles she was forced into. In the end they can’t keep their promise to die together. Does he care for Chie’s daughter out of filial love, or to fulfill Chie’s wish, or out of his inherent desire to be there for those who need him? Does he find meaning in becoming the chief administrator for the Ooku because he can now create structure and purpose for the other men? Is he at peace with his decision to stay in the Ooku? Is he numbed by everything he has faced in his life? In the end his gentle smile and calm demeanor reveal nothing of his true emotions.
Buckle in if you want to watch this show. The story is well told and heart rending in every episode.

Refined traditional karakasa (paper umbrella) created by Kasabiyori, witth a soft pattern of aoi (hollyhock) and yukiwa (snowflakes).
When you sit under this umbrella, the inner circle also reveals a symbol named mistubaaoi which is the crest of the Tokugawa family. Fitting as this umbrella was created for the Sekigahara Battlefield Memorial Museum shop.
A less discreet version has this same mon in gold leaf:

hello citizen
have you ever had a problem? I know I have! Here at Harrison armory we solve problems and, with the unending intelligence of the thinktank we have determined a fundamental Truth(that's right capital T Truth) about the universe, axiom by which all things abide: given any problem there is a finite, but not necessarily small, amount of violence that will remove that problem.
With that principle in mind our finest engineer have designed the HA Tokugawa in order to deliver violence at swiftly, efficiently and reliably as possible.
why waste all that pesky heat on yourself when someone else could use it?
enemy is out of range? No it's not +10 range
Melee only build? Even better attack with threat 5-8 depending on how based you are
You missed? Unlikely but overcharge and attack again
Enemy isn't dead? Overcharge and attack again
Still not enough attacks? With our friend SEKMET from IPSN you can make 7 attacks in a turn
Resistances don't exist because who has energy resistance
If this still doesn't kill your target(by some miracle) all the bonus damage you do becomes burn so they have to take it until the day they die(probably today)
"What if there's multiple enemies?! What if they have armour!?" I hear you cry. Worry not! The Tokugawa license provides Harrison armory's very own annihilator which will dispatch you violence to all surrounding enemies and it has AP!
Normally I would deride the plasma gauntlet as inferior to simply hitting things more on account of being limited, BUT since it is a saving throw not an attack you can use to nuke any SCC mech foolish enough to enter melee with you believing invisibility will save it.
many claim the Tokugawa is "unsafe", "the cause of my son's cancer" or "worse than the manicure because it pretends to be something else" but have they done 96 burn in a single turn? I thought not
There's simply nothing better than pure unadulterated violence, and when it comes to violence the Tokugawa is the best of the best.

HA Tokugawa frame, custom refit for use by Da-Da Foreign Legion, deployed during the Krevita Perlo crisis as Union auxiliary and recalled after unsanctioned deployment into CFN territory, resulting in a skirmish that greatly damaged political relations between the planets superpowers.
