This idea has been in my mind for WEEKS now and I need to write a fic about it but before I do that I need to share my idea with all of the tomarry lovers out there so here is a short little ficlet:
——
Tom is an investigative auror, who investigates criminal cases and solves them, on top of the normal auror duties. Usually, his job is so boring it makes him want to tear his eyes out. He often gets assigned cases that have to deal with finding family dogs and searching for little kids who ran away in childish fits of anger.
The Dark Lord Harry is more than just a passing thought in his mind most days. Tom, from the time he learned of magic (and subsequently him, the dark lord) has had a certain fascination with this famous figure. A particular pull to the Dark Lord Harry that has led him to investigate every part of Harry’s life (though not much is known about it) to sate this endless urge to learn more about him.
Unfortunately, the dark lord hasn’t been active in the wizarding world in more than 5 years, and Tom doesn’t think he’ll be back anytime soon, much to his disappointment.
That is, until Tom is called to an urgent meeting one day where he is informed that the Dark Lord Harry has struck again, seemingly out of nowhere. Tom and his colleagues are warned that they could be called to battle any day now, if the dark lord decides to be a bit more bold in his moves “against the wizarding world” (bullshit. The Dark Lord Harry only wants equality for all witches and wizards and for all types of magic. It’s for the benefit of the wizarding world, not “against” it, Tom angrily thinks).
Just a week later and seemingly out of nowhere, Tom is called to battle. Immediately upon arriving at the site, he and his fellow aurors have to fend off squadrons of Harry’s devoted followers. The battle continues on.
Tom is in the middle of a particularly vicious one-on-one duel when he sees him out of the corner of his eye. And oh, he is glorious.
Quickly sending a stunning spell at the other dueler when his guard was down, he surreptitiously made his way over to where the dark lord was.
Harry notices him anyway, despite his efforts to go unnoticed.
Harry quickly overpowers his opponent without much of an effort. He then casually starts a conversation with Tom, and it devolves into them slightly flirting. None of the other aurors or followers of Harry notice their conversation.
The battle ends when Harry gathers his followers and leaves quickly (though not before sending Tom one last teasing reply), and the battlefield goes silent. Tom’s mind is reeling.
He already can’t wait for the next battle.

so i made a tomarry rec list to convert my mutuals🍷
or: 10 fics i adore and the potion ingredients they taste of
Tumblr media
What He Grows To Be | M, 260k | @k-s-morgan
A story of trust, remorse and the darker aspects of love. It is premised on one of the most beloved tomarry tropes – 'Harry time travels back to raise Tom' – and so Tom is given the chance to unlearn his frankly disastrous sense of entitlement and ultimately, to be reshaped by empathy and forgiveness. WHGTB is the perfect fic to get into tomarry if you're not quite sure what to expect from this ship, still wondering what their dynamic might look like, etc.
Tumblr media
love is touching souls (surely you touched mine) | M, 34k | @toast-ranger-to-a-stranger
An accident takes Harry back to the winter of 1945, where he immediately captures the interest of a fresh-out-of-Hogwarts, not-yet-beyond-saving Tom. Their dynamic is deliciously intense from the start, with Harry being his usual sassy, dorky self that leaves Tom equally infuriated and intrigued. And Tom's arc, likewise, is beautifully crafted. Conversations about redemption, about remorse, are layered, thoughtful. Expect hurt/comfort, domestic softness, a devastating cliffhanger and an ending that will gently put you back together like a forehead kiss.
Tumblr media
As Is The Father, So Is The Son | E, 4.5k | @this-is-your-heichou-speaking
An a/b/o royalty AU in which Tom (the Prince) is practically obsessed with Harry, who happens to be an omega boy from his father’s harem. This is undoubtedly one of the hottest smuts I’ve ever read, featuring lush prose, unapologetic, dub-con/non-con elements and an interesting take on “dark slutty Harry”. tl;dr: mind the tags; stay hydrated 💦🍆
Tumblr media
breaking in through open doors | T, 1.4k | Brooding_Aunt
A unique, haunting read that is perfect for spooky seasons. Horror masterpiece. Goosebumps guaranteed. I won’t spoiler much but I urge you to give emo girl Harry a go (it makes a terrifying lot of sense in the context of the storytelling, I swear), and let her narrative haunt you.
Tumblr media
Thirst | E, 27k | @obsidianpen
(Sexy) mind games with Horcrux!Tom …. Will he be motivated enough to let Harry out of the Lestrange Vault before Voldemort arrives? Another dark, chilling fic in which both Harry and Tom have their own weaknesses that the other seeks to explore, and hopefully to take advantage of, as they grapple for survival.
Tumblr media
Memento Mori | E, 49k | @purplewitch156
Every time Harry dies, instead of boarding the train that will take him to the Afterlife, to his family, he chooses to return to the living world with Tom, who is unable go on. Four Lives, two idiots, one love story. There’s humour, there’s action, heartwarming moments and heartbreaking ones … basically, be prepared for all the feels that will take forever to recover from.
Tumblr media
Wake From a Dream | T, 2.6k | @duplicitywrites
Cats and domestic tomarry (I am so ridiculously weak for this). Duplicity’s writing is gorgeous in that, within a smallish word count, we are given a glimpse of something profound, something vulnerable, subtly tucked into the lovely little interactions and the intimacy Harry and Tom share.
Tumblr media
Hmm | G, 6.4k | Wolven_Spirits
‘Harry is a hummingbird animagus. Tom opens a flower shop just to attract his attention.’ That’s the fic summary – need I say more🥺?? There’s something so gentle and evocative (but also undeniably Slytherin) about Tom’s decision to devote himself to his flowers, to creating a safe space for Harry. Florist!Tom supremacy, is what I’m saying.
Tumblr media
Man Down | T, 5k | @classlesstulip
It’s tagged as Mafia AU, but in all honesty this fic is, I must say, ‘Ghibli in gangster’s suit’ (affectionate). It’s hilarious (I genuinely laughed out loud quite a few times throughout the story), super adorable, and everything that makes a lovely pick-me-up fic.
Tumblr media
What Happens In Vegas | E, 14k | @dividawrites
Sexy, decadent and intrinsically tomarry, this fic became an instant fave a few paragraphs in. Tom is super chaotic and his characterisation is perhaps one of the best I’ve ever read. Featuring a delicious age difference, thirsty brat Harry, DADA Professor Riddle (yes please) and size kink hello🥵 – all that executed through Divida’s sharp, witty writer’s voice! Really, Vegas is the ultimate dream.

Summary: Harry and Tom live at Wool's Orphanage, discovering their magic together. Things are going well until an argument leads them to make a wish. A wish that throws them from a world they know into the unfamiliarity. They're now separated and afraid they'll never see each other again.
---- Hannibal Lecter finds a boy with a soul as hungry as his, holding a bloody knife over a broken body. Intrigued, he decides he'll take him in. Whether the boy proves to stay interesting is another matter entirely. ---- Will Graham comes home to find a stray has found him this time only it isn't his usual four-legged kind. Baffled he's soon greeted by a pair of bright green eyes and a, "are you my dad mister?"
Chapter Insert:
He had been hoping this wouldn’t be the case but of course his hopes are dashed and rightly so. No child could fully escape the cruelty of their abusers without some cause of concerning behaviors showing sooner or later. He had assumed incorrectly that Harry had escaped the same fate of others his age and overlooked any signs just because Harry had been so eager to give out his smiles and laughter to someone like Will.
He's going to need to inform Harry’s foster parents to sign him up for therapy because this doesn’t bode well. Heart aching, Will tries to put on a smile but must have failed as for the first time, Harry narrows his eyes at him in suspicion for only a split second before he’s beaming innocently but Will caught it, nonetheless.
This action does make him pause despite the fact that Harry has never done anything so far as to be the suspicious sort.
The cog wheels of his brain turn regardless and keeps turning as it always does, information coming and going where they need to. Something…isn’t quite adding up and he doesn’t mean the birds. He shuts those thoughts away for now however, because right now, Harry doesn’t need distrustfulness aimed at him when he’s just been through an ordeal.
Instead, he tries harder to return Harry’s smile, asking again about the birds.
“Erm,” Harry fidgets, his hands running up and down his knees in nervousness. “I was just joking. I reckon you don’t talk to birds?”
“No, I can’t say that I have.” Will hesitates before deciding to ask, “would you say they make great conversation?”

UDLTTOM WORLDBUILDING RAMBLES: American Wizarding Society vs British Wizarding Society
This is like the 3rd installment of what is quickly becoming a series of long ranting posts about the lore surrounding Harry Potter & a current time-travel au I'm writing on AO3. But you don't need to have read the previous two posts to understand this one. (I still link them for those interested: pt 1, pt 2, pt. 3.) .
I think it's been fairly established that JK doesn't have much awareness of anything outside of Britain when it comes to world building. I've seen posts discussing how unrealistic the magical schools are and such. (Which obviously there can't be just 11 schools. I refuse to believe it. It exceeds my suspension of disbelief.) But this post isn't about that, but the whole societal structure of the American Wizarding society as a whole. I recently started watching my through the Fantastic Beasts films (I know I'm late to the show.) and as an American I can't help but to address some of this...
There's a lot to address & I'm sorry if this post gets a off on some tangents. But I'm just gonna jump right in with the things that bother me most.
1)The MACUSA reeks of British colonization.
As we all know, North America wasn't unpopulated when people from Europe started arriving. Native Americans, the Mayans, the Aztecs, Inuit people, and while some of them were nomadic others had established cities & advanced communities for that day in age. It was the religious zealot Protestants, aka Puritians, being driven out of England that pushed into these communities and brought with them this harmful religious dogma and pushed these people out of the homes and their lands. Like if you read into any of these cultures and their histories, you'll see that these communities were accepting of magic and in the HP world were probably very much wizards themselves.
And so the MACUSA doesn't make sense to me having been founded before the American Revolution, but after the Salem Witch Trials because in all likelihood wizards were being persecuted long before all that. Like I can't believe that the indigenous communities wouldn't have formed some sort of collective in order to combat these foreign invaders from overseas—Especially if they were wizards.
I mean so there had to be something before that, right? Like in all likelihood what I see happening is that these British wizards pushed themselves in with the Puritians (for whatever reason) and in the process brought with them their backwards views on muggles & blood politics & classism which wasn't a part of the original society. Because if you look at the indigenous histories you'll see that medicine men/women were respected members of their communities. Wizards and Muggles lived alongside each other just fine. But then the colonizers came & ruined that harmonious dynamic between the magical and nonmagical.
And that it's called the Magical Congress of the United States of America...It doesn't make sense unless that name came about after the American Revolution. Because before that it was referred to as the 13 colonies. Then it also took some time after the American Revolution for the 13 colonies to expand into the United States. (American didn't get all 50 states until 1959 with the purchase of Alaska from Russia and the forceful occupation of Hawaii.)
It makes more sense that there was a power struggle between two or more opposing Magical governments for the control of the Americas. And this would lead to a sort of Wizarding Civil War. Between the indigenous magical communities and the British, & Spanish, & French Colonies. It's a big place, huge. & it would be diced up and divided I think much more than than the muggle/no-maj community/government is.
The MACUSA being only on the East Coast makes more sense to me. (It also explains how there can only be one wizarding school in MA.) And how that school is a sister school of Hogwarts & how they are structured so similarly. Because watching the Fantastic Beasts films I don't feel like I'm watching American wizards, it more feels like I'm watching British Wizards with American accents.
And then the rest of the country is split up into districts or regions (much like it is in real life with: East Coast, Deep South, West Coast, Midwest.) where the indigenous practices and cultures are still prevalent.
I also don't buy into this idea that France and Spain would abandon their stake on the Continent. So in reality, it's more believable that Spanish Wizards would control Florida and expand all the way up to Arkansas, French wizards would Have control of Louisiana & Mississippi, East Texas, parts of Oklahoma, the British Wizards would have the colonies & maybe parts of the Great Lakes area like Illinois or Ohio, and then the rest of North America would be divided up into different territories amongst the indigenous communities.
Which then brings me to the second thing that bothers me: Rappaport's Law.
2) Rappaport's Law is a heavy-handed allegory for Jim Crowe & Segregation Laws.
As a white person, there's a lot in this topic that I am likely under informed and underqualified to unpack. It is a subject that would be better dissected by someone who understands the cultural histories and nuances better than me. But I read up a lot on random histories (because my Adhd brain leads me down some interesting research rabbit holes & I find myself fascinated by lore histories and folktales.) And I've learned a bit about the various histories pertaining to the Trans Atlantic Slave trade and how things like Voodoo made their way to America through the enslavement of various African tribes.
And again back to the British colonization, slaves were sold to the British by rival tribes & then some of those people made their way to North America when the colonies were formed , but that there was also a significant number of slaves that were indigenous to North America as well.
But how the indigenous communities were structured and how the tribal communities were structure were not all that dissimilar from each other. They both have an awareness of magic and similar spiritual practices. Again magic coexisting with muggles and what makes the most sense was that rival tribes would in fact sell the wizards into slavery and keep the squib/no-maj members of the village because they were less of a threat.
Which in turn would lead to most of the magical communities in North America being POC. Like honestly, I think they are the majority in the Americas. And the Rappaport Law, preventing the intermingling of no-majs & wizards would be heavily criticized because of the similarities to Jim Crowe and Segregation Laws.
And you might try to argue that because of the Statute of Secrecy, wizards wouldn't have any awareness of those muggle laws. But I argue that because of Slavery and most of the wizards being either slaves or negatively impacted by the European settlers would be very, very aware of those laws and prejudices & be actively fighting against them.
Like it was wizards creating and maintaining the underground railroad. It was wizards getting other wizards out and getting them away, regardless of whether or not they were magical because they were all slaves. And they would in fact still have muggles living side-by-side with them in these magical communities and spitting in the face of the Statute of Secrecy. And entire generations of no-majs would live and die in these communities and possibly even leave these communities to assimilate with other muggles and what not, but the American wizards would not be as cut off from the no-maj world like their British counterparts are.
3) Blood Politics would never be able to take root there.
Because most of them are unable to trace back their own bloodlines. It's why Americans don't have house elves working for them because it's Slavery, which they spent centuries combating and trying to escape. And why Grindelwald couldn't gain a foothold there because he was European and was actively killing muggleborns, squibs, no-majs like that wasn't their own people.
And this would also mean that, technologically, the magical communities in North America are more advanced. They are not stagnating like they are in Britain. Wizards are not a dying breed. They have a healthy growing population and low inbreeding rates, and advancements in magic and no-maj sciences. It's the sort of strength Grindelwald and Voldemort would want to recruit for their causes, but with how the majority of the continent is structured would never be able to.
[thank you for coming to my tedtalk.]

thank you for the rec list!!!
Of course! We have so many amazing writers in the TMRHP fandom.
Some works I've been enjoying more recently are:
Those Made of Lightning and Blood, by A_Single_Cactus
Three Sugars and a Splash of Daddy, Please, by aroundloafofbread and Wolven_Spirits
Aphelion by TimaeusKosmou
All three of these have absolutely fascinating Tomarry dynamics! I love the dramatic irony in Those Made of Lightning and Blood and am so so excited for the soulmate revelation. I enjoy Tom being spoiled by Harry in Three Sugars and how his feelings develop for Harry. And I love Harry constantly surprising and impressing Tom in Aphelion. Three amazing fics!

How many Horcruxes does it take to seduce a Harry?
Harry Potter had a crush on Diary, but Diary was long since dead (or, uh, brutually murdered by the beloved in question). What's a Horcrux to do except to impersonate him?
i don’t have an excuse for this one actually. here’s a bunch of dumb horcruxes arguing over one man

Hear me out.
Battle for the Sun by Placebo
= Tomarry.
listen to me. if you are an avid enjoyer, or a fanatic (like moi) you need to give this song a listen while reading the ship. it is quite literally the best suited song for the dynamic. The lyrics and the implications behind them are out of this world and so is the masterful scenery that gets visualized in you head while listening to it.
“Dream brother, my killer, my lover”
this is what caught me off guard when listening to this for the first time, since i think this is exactly their relationship.
dream brother = brother wands, souls intertwined, their existence depending on the ither to me is so biblical, but who am i to judge! anyways, there is so much familiarity between these two, they almost know the other if not as well as, than better than themselves. you can’t tell that familiarity so profound doesn’t hint at destiny to be with each other or not be at all.
my killer = now this is a prophecy. the intimate relationship between killer and victim is often so misguided and depicted in a horrifyingly disgusting way, that i genuinely feel sick. Whereas whenever i find myself perusing a fanfiction that involves one of them murdering the other, there is a perverse satisfaction that comes from your beloved taking the only thing that matter to them — your life. The Tomarry writers can make it out to be so romantic, and often times the actual act of killing doesn’t even occur — BUT horcruxes. ‘my killer’ reeks of simplicity, because how else could you interpret it? well in this fandom nothing is as simple as it seems. My Killer, because Harry destroys the horcruxes, because Voldemort kills Harry in the forest (while aslo killing a piece of himself, now isn’t this poetic justice?)
my lover = many people will contradict the relationship based on age appropriate reasons or even their own preference, but be that as it may, we all have to make the informed decision (even if we cannot come to terms with it) that Tomarry is superior to all the others regarding tropes, seldom writing as well.
If you’ve come so far, thank you for reading this!! I’m not posting out of my own volition, it is akin to Tom taking power over me and writing this himself. i feel like he would wholly agree with this.

hello friends! last month was full of wonderful reads that i’m excited to share. there’s a good variety of pairings this round of recs too, with majority drarry and a few others sprinkled in. wishing everyone another month of amazing fics in august! and now here are my favourite fics from july:
Drarry
The Heart of the Manor by @kedavranox | M | 3k
i love drarry and horror and this fic was masterful. it’s able to weave such a vividly eerie atmosphere with an incredible, ominous ending in only 3k words. skillfully concise and quick, it’s like a well placed gut punch in the best way possible.
Not Nineteen Forever by @sorrybutblog | E | 5k
i am a sucker for any fic involving de-aging/age difference between Harry and Draco, especially when it has a generous dose of pining. i absolutely loved younger draco in all his funny, sexy, teasing glory!
Progressive Displacement by GatewayGirl | E | 20k
this one was a reread, but one i’ll never get tired of. universe hopping is always so so fun, and all the different versions of harry and draco were amazing.
The Matchmaker’s Spell by @kbrick | E | 20k
messy drarry has such an exquisite flavour. their dynamic when it’s a little bit fucked up is just *chefs kiss* the energy of this fic is so wonderfully intense and i felt like i was buzzing the entire time i was reading it. and can we talk about that ending? brilliant!
The Day Before the Wedding by @kbrick | E | 39k
when i saw that kbrick dropped a new fic and that it was a timeloop fic, i pretty much dropped everything to read it. harry reliving the day before he gets married to ginny over and over is all at once spectacularly calamitous and cathartic. harry and draco both work for their growth in this one, and the timeloop aspect is done wonderfully, as per expected from kbrick!
The Art of Our Necessities by dcfg21 | E | 52k
this one was another reread and one that i’d consider one of my personal drarry classics, at least in the vampire genre. we have unhinged vampire harry who is bonded to draco to keep him on a leash, with a gloriously hot dynamic featuring a possessive and protective harry. i love how much these two cant help but want each other. a drarry vampire must-read.
The Remnant by @kbrick | E | 71k
i must admit that i went on a bit of a kbrick splurge this month but i couldn’t resist this one when i saw the demonic possession tag,, possessed harry has got to be one of the most creepy hot things i’ve read and i thoroughly enjoyed everything about it (as did draco 😳)
Others
Snarry
Ingredients of Respect by Lizzy0305 | E | 27k
harry gaining a genuine interest in potions is something i love reading, especially when severus helps him realize it. but when harry also gains an interest in severus, the tension is strikingly hot. i loved the dynamic between them!
In Between Days by atrata | E | 68k
the characterization of snape in this fic is so good! he’s the perfect mix of bitterness, snark, and self loathing. paired with a messy, angsty harry, you get a snarry dynamic that feels absolutely electric.
Tomarymort
Break it Down by @acciotomriddle | M | 1k
prisoner voldemort and harry in a smutty power struggle? yes, please.
Dark Heritage by @dropsofnightshade | 342k
it’s always lovely reading harry-gets-adopted-by-adult-who-actually-treats-him-well stories. i especially liked the depiction of the black family in this one! and harry’s relationship with the greengrass family was such a treat as well. also notable is the world building, wizarding politics and dark magic!
Sirius/Voldemort
It runs in the blood by @metalomagnetic | E | 121k
this fic has haunted my mind since i started reading it. voldemort courting sirius to be a death eater, and maybe even more was something i didn’t know i needed until i got it and then suddenly it was all i’ve ever wanted. this fic immersed me into a setting i don’t read too often—during the first war with voldemort. and we really get into the thick of it with sirius and all his different interactions. highly recommend!

light horror, potentially smutty tomarry prompt:
i need portrait horcrux tom who’s a magical, pre-raphelite masterpiece (think waterhouse’s the lady of shalott) that leaves a trail of dead owners behind him as he graces one manor hall after another. in any case good luck to cursebreaker harry who’s tasked with figuring out what exactly is wrong with that infamous painting, all the while having to deal with his landslide crush on a way-too-high-functioning portrait. (cue year 6 harry whose only takeaway from his penseive lessons was “oh fuck tom riddle?! was so clever and so tall and sooo hot??!!!”)

Harry Raises Tom (he tries anyway) Chapter Seven
Summary: 12 years after the defeat of Voldemort, in a drunken stupor, Harry Potter passes out only to wake up in 1931, confused, lost, and still very much drunk. He eventually pulls himself together enough to get an alias and to start thinking about his future seriously.
Somehow though, he ends up with the Elder Wand that should have been with Grindelwald and then finds himself taking in Tom Riddle. He had not counted to be a witness to a defenseless Riddle in the middle of an exorcism or his reaction when he did. Needless to say, his day had been busy and it's only going to get worse from there he suspects.
