Day 284: Windy (Transformers: Operation Combination)

I found a cute train lady! I was scrolling through Shouki (Trainbot Leader) on TFWiki, and I found a story called “Train Wars” that included nearly every Train Transformer fighting the Fallen in manga form!

Naturally, I had to go through all the train members, and I found Windy! She’s part of the micromaster team “Sixtrain,” and we got her in the US as Midnight Express.

She’s adorable! I want to be friends with a few of my own Trainbot OCs. (Might be a hint for tomorrow’s drawings…)

BWII Destrons & Megastorm

“Hey, doesn’t he frighten you, that Megastorm?” The mess hall of the Galvaburg I, the primary Destron flagship, was large enough that the Destron troops who gathered there could feel secure in a sense of anonymity, and conversations like this could arise.

“What, the SIC? He’s nothing but a meek fool.” The mech who’d spoken was an experienced general. Several younger soldiers murmured their agreement, a few laughing quietly, others looking more unnerved to hear such blatant disrespect at the expense of a member of High Command, their leader’s brother, no less.

“You wouldn’t get it! An Autoroller like you always ends up on missions directed by Galvatron. Megastorm’s different when he commands alone.” The Combatron who’d spoken glanced over his shoulder nervously as if the unruly Prince of Destruction might show up at any moment, while his partner nodded in agreement.

“Different, how?” The Autoroller general replied.

“Cold, sneaky… More reserved than our Emperor.”

More troopers approached the table, pushing up seats to listen. One interjects, “Sure. One time I was under his command, he called a retreat because the Cybertrons were acting strange. We thought he was being cowardly, but it turned out they had a new weapon and were planning an ambush. Our squad owes our lives to that call.”

“Feh, as if he could have known. When I was under his command, he went behind Galvatron’s back and ordered a raid of an abandoned Cybertron base. He showed no care when one of us got nearly crushed by disturbed rubble, and when Galvatron discovered his ploy, he tried to initiate the self-destruct to trap our leader inside. We all saw it!”

A shocked muttering passes through the crowd.

“So,” someone says at last, “Megastorm or Galvatron, who would you rather have as leader?”

“Who knows?” Grins another, “but if Megastorm became Emperor, well… I’d want to stay on his good side. Don’t underestimate him, you know?”

"Wise words." The voice that spoke up was tensely authoritative, recognised instantly by the gathered troops, although the speaker it belonged to was known to many as usually speaking in a much higher, more anxious tone.

"M-Megastorm!" The troopers part a path, shrinking back at once under the scrutiny of the Second in Command.

"Megastorm, what?"

There was a beat of silence, then the Combatron who'd started the conversation tentatively said, "Megatron, Prince of Destruction?"

Megastorm's derma curled into a smile. "Emperor of Desctruction, one day. Don't underestimate me!" With that, the Destron SIC turned and left the mess hall, his troopers staring after him.

I came into Transformers as a fandom via watching some of the ‘older’ media* as a late teen, so I could be considered a ‘latecomer’ in some aspects. And honestly, as a latecomer, it was really jarring to go and find older posts back when Miko was considered the most annoying thing in the world. When I came in, the general atmosphere was really one where a lot of people really warmed up to her as a character. People liked their ‘unhinged’ female characters. She was silly and delightful to them. And I really liked that sort of environment. So it does become a real shock when I scroll back far enough and I encounter like, genuine Miko hate. Especially the more overtly racist and misogynistic stuff around her; that stuff just jumps out at you like a snake in the grass.

*Meaning the parts of the franchise that were not releasing new material at the time; my intro was Prime.

How I would rank the various Transformers series:

Love:

- IDW1 - phase 2 (MTMTE, Windblade and RID)

- Earthspark

- Prime

- Cyberverse Series 3 and the specials

- The War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron games (I use screenshots I took of those games for art references all the time)

Like:

-IDW1 - phase 3 (Lost Light, TAAO and OP, I feel the latter especially got dragged down due to the shoehorned in hasbro universe crossovers, like visionaries, and all the books suffered from the rushed ending and reboot)

- Animated

-The Bumblebee movie

- Skybound's Transformers comic (got the best take on G1 Optimus for a long time, though I'm not thrilled about the GI Joe crossover part)

- The 1986 movie

- Cyberverse Series 2

- IDW2 (works a lot better when you read it all at once rather than as single issues)

- IDW Shattered Glass ( though I felt the first series was a lot stronger than the second)

-Transformers 2007 film

- IDW Beast Wars Comics

- Headmasters (in a so bad it's good way, the show itself is awful XD)

It's okay:

-G1 cartoon

- The Aligned Novels

- RID2015 (I think it's dragged down because it's really poor sequel to prime, partly because it was aiming at a much younger audience so there's a big disconnect in tone between the two shows, it would have worked a lot better if it'd just been it's own thing.)

- Age of Extinction

- Cyberverse Series 1

- Dark of the Moon

- Netflix Kingdom (I think it's the best of the trilogy but I hate how it just killed off Elita etc, who were the best part of Earthrise, off-screen)

- Netflix War for Cybertron

- The G1 Marvel Comics

- IDW1- phase 1

Didn't like:

- Last bot standing (It's just too dark for my tastes)

- Beast Machines

- Energon

- IDW King Grimlock

- Japanese G1 manga (it's just not for me)

- The G2 Marvel Comics

- The machinima Prime wars Trilogy (combiner wars etc., the way Megatron was characterised was the only redeeming feature of that series)

- Netflix Earthrise (Just awful, though I liked the Elita one segments.)

Hated:

- Dreamwave comics (awful art and the fact it was a scam company makes them even worse in retrospect)

- Rise of the Dark spark game (awful, laggy game and it had a game breaking glitch which bricked my PC the first time I played it, and I haven't bothered playing it again since! The fragged-up business decisions behind the game makes it even worse.)

- The last Knight

- Revenge of the Fallen

Haven't seen/ haven't seen enough of it to make a judgement:

Victory and Other Japanese-only G1 and Beast wars series, except headmasters

Beast Wars, I just can't get past the uncanny valley 90s CGI animation, sorry.
