6. Hide a tree in the woods

so, it's not so important whether Gabriel remembers anything about his former life or not. The problem is that the Book disappeared in the interval between the erasure of memory in the elevator and the appearance in the bookshop, and this period remained with Gabriel only in the form of vague sensations. He carried the box somewhere for a long time, his hands ached.... the rest was a blur.

when the Archangel walked down Wickber Street, the box was already empty, which means the Book is not in the shop. However, if he doesn't know or remember this detail, he might think that is where it is. After all, it's a very logical decision to hide the book among the books, right?

and you know what? There are at least three people looking for the book in the series, and all three think Aziraphale has it somewhere. The trap of the obvious.

let's start with Gabriel. Yeah, he doesn't remember it, but he's looking for it. I don't know why.

there are two moments in the series that indirectly point to this search. First, a very strange activity that Gabriel found in the bookshop: shelving books by the first letter of the first sentence [06:05 Ep.2].

«– But look, what exactly are you doing? – Oh, I thought, I'd make the books easier to find, so I thought if I put them in alphabetical order.

– Alphabetical... by author?

– What's author? No, I was shelving the books by the first letter of the first sentence.

– But no one would ever... Jolly good. Good idea. Thank you, Jim. Carry on. »

an occupation, at first glance, as ridiculous as possible. But! Aziraphale's permission allows Gabriel to open all the books in a row without raising any questions or suspicions. He doesn't remember what the Book of Life looks like, but he obviously recognizes it when he starts reading it. And he really may not know what the author is, because the only book he knows has an obvious "author" as well.

the second point is the dialog about gravity. Gabriel drops the book on the table. Crowley says it's gravity, it's needed for things to stay where they're put [16:17 Ep.3].

«– Gravity. It's um...a thing that happens when object are pulled together. In this case they're all pulled downwards because the earth is the largest thing around.

– Why?

– Ah. Honestly, um, I don't remember. Seemed like a good idea when we were all talking about it. So things would stay where you put them, not just drift off.

– But it doesn't stay where I put them. It goes down. Except for flies, they go up.»

yes, here again they draw our attention to the fly, but in the beginning the conversation is about the fact that books don't stay where Gabriel puts them. Maybe this is a hint like «I remember putting the book in the box, but now it's not there, where could it have gone?».

we can also speculate about that the book hanging out in space next to Crowley when he launched the nebula was the Book of Life, and it certainly didn't fall anywhere then. This idea is entertaining because it could suddenly shoot up in season three, if Neil does decide to develop the Book storyline in some way.

Prisoner to Temptation | Epilogue

A/N: I really should have known that taking a mental break from finishing this story would have disrupted the flow of the universe as we know it, and now we’ve all been made to suffer through the extraordinary stellar beauty of half-naked Chae Hyungwon. He really did that and he did that for me. And, here, I foolishly deluded myself into thinking that I was the one controlling the pain around here. Hyungwon’s had all of the power all along... He compelled me to stay up until 2AM to publish this so I didn’t miss the final week after all.

The royal wing rang with shrieks of pain and howls of agony so loudly that most corners of the palace grounds had been pierced, too. At the epicenter, in the former bedroom of the Princess Supreme, they were most shrill. There, Naran was propped against her headboard, her hands gripping two straps tethered to the ceiling as a pair of mid-wives pressed back her knees. Sweat poured down the princess’s face, and her thin cotton robe clung to her body.

“It is time, Your Majesty,” said a squat, wizened woman, with her own sweat-peppered brow and wise eyes.

Empress Indeok turned her attention to her daughter-in-law, though the princess couldn’t seem to focus her gaze on anything in the room. In her firm, soothing voice, the empress said, “Naran, are you ready to welcome your baby to the world?”

“No, I want Saran. Where’s Saran?” demanded the frazzled princess.

Hyungwon mopped a fresh cloth along his wife’s forehead as he answered, “She’s still a week out, darling, remember?”

Naran’s eyes widened to their limit as panic overtook her. She shook her head frantically. “No! I have to wait for her! She has to be here. We can wait, right?”

“Your Highness,” warned the mid-wife, “you must keep Her Grace calm.”

“And just how do I do that?” he snapped. “She’s suffering so.”

“Talk to your wife, Your Highness. She will need you to help her through this,” the old woman urged.

Hyungwon grabbed the support ties by Naran’s hand, and the princess immediately snapped the trap to clench his hand, too. With his free hand, he brushed his wife’s sodden bangs from her forehead as he praised her, “Do you have any idea how beautiful you are right now?”

“Liar,” snarled Naran though she squeezed his hand urgently.

“You’re having our baby. What could be more beautiful in the whole world?”

“Wonnie, I’m so scared.”

“As am I, my love, but it’s a good kind of scary, isn’t it?”

Indeok rubbed Naran’s forearm as she added, “It is terrifying, but in a few minutes, it will be perfect. You’ll be a family.”

The princess let out a pained sob but nodded. “Please do not leave me, Mother.”

A single tear slipped from the corner of the empress’s eye as she laid a reassuring hand on the princess’s enormous stomach. “I swear it then.”

“Your Highness,” said one of the younger midwives to Naran, “it is time to push.”

The panic was back in Naran’s voice as she jolted up. “How?”

The old woman who knelt between the princess’s legs gently guided her ankles back a bit higher and wider as she continued in a sturdy, confident voice, “Bear down as hard as you can and trust what nature tells you to do. Do not forget to breathe, Your Highness.”

Naran’s terrified eyes whipped up to her husband. Sweat dripped into them, making them itch, but Hyungwon was quick to wipe it away.

“You’re ready, my love. You can do it,” he assured.

“I can’t. I can’t. It hurts. You’ve no idea how much.”

“You’re right, I do not, but you are the most fearsome person I have ever met, Naran. You can do anything. Squeeze my hand as hard as you can. Hurt me if you must. I’m right here.”

The princess looked at her husband, who had never looked surer of anything in his life. Her hand tightened around his tighter and tighter and tighter, and though her nails bit into his skin until creases formed at the edge of his eyes, Hyungwon’s support did not waver.

At last, Naran announced, “I am ready.”

“Push, Your Grace,” urged the midwife, and Naran let out a grunt and a wail as her eyes winched shut until she saw blooms of white like dandelion seeds exploding in the wind.

“Breathe,” Hyungwon whispered in that reassuring rasp that she loved.

The princess gulped for breath, and as the other midwife counted down on her fingers, the one stationed between her legs said, “Push!”

Another round and then another and then another. Each time, the agony intensified until Naran was nothing but a bundle of straining muscles and raw nerves.

“There’s the head!” the midwife rejoiced at length.

Naran’s head sagged back on her shoulders. It wasn’t the pain that overwhelmed so much as it was the intensity of the whole experience. Her body felt distended to its max. She wanted to curl in on herself like a pill bug to escape, but there was an even more pressing need to purge herself. Her body had not been her own for months on end, and it was fighting tooth and nail to reclaim itself.

“Wonnie,” she whimpered, “I don’t know how much more of this I can take.”

He kissed her then and turned his hand in hers to hold it properly. His soothing gaze met her strung-out one, and already, she felt strength welling in her again. He smiled then and said, “It’s almost over, darling. We’re finally going to meet our baby.”

“Yeah…” she said breathlessly.

“And when you teach it Moghul, you’ll teach me, too, right?”

“Push, Your Highness!”

Naran screamed a yes through another squeeze as the midwives readied the room for the baby’s arrival.

Hyungwon continued combing his wife’s bangs back from her forehead as he continued, “And when our child is old enough, we will ride back to Moghulikhan.”

“I was born... On a horse... You know,” she managed through gritted teeth.

“I know.”

“One more!” the midwife commanded again as she pressed back the princess’s knees, and this time, as Naran gulped for breath and winched her eyes shut, she funneled what was left of her strength into her belly muscles. At last, the pressure released, and as soon as it did, she felt her bones turn to jelly. She sank into the bed with an incredulous sob and a drunken laugh, and when she glanced up, Hyungwon was crying.

“My love?” Naran said weakly.

Only then did the shrill cry pierce her foggy brain.

Their baby had arrived.

“It's a girl, Your Highnesses!” one of the midwives proclaimed.

Again, Naran looked nervously to her husband, but the enormous smile on his face was equaled only by the day she had told him she loved him too. Wet tracks glistened on his cheeks as the midwives handed their daughter to the prince. The bundle was small and tight, but the wails were earsplitting, yet it was the most resplendent sound she had ever heard in her whole life. The princess couldn't see her baby's face, but she didn't need to. She saw her husband's. Every curve of Hyungwon’s face was as soft and puffy as a cloud and just as bright as he rocked the bundle in his arms.

“She's beautiful, like a little star,” he whispered. It was nearly drowned out by the baby's cries, but Naran heard it all the same. “Just like her mother.”

The midwives finished cleaning up the princess, and Naran barely had the strength to do anything other than stare at her new family beside her. The eldest midwife rattled off instructions for the prince, who nodded and hummed as though he were listening though his eyes never left his daughter. The midwife grinned as she grabbed a wet cloth and dabbed the baby's face clean before she returned to the princess.

As the sheets were tucked around the princess's waist, the grandmotherly midwife said, “Congratulations, Your Highnesses. May she be as strong and gentle and beloved as the two of you are.”

“She’s already beloved,” murmured the prince.

He bowed to the midwives and, at last, laid their daughter on Naran’s breast, its scrunched and angry face huffing out rattling breaths that soothed with every beat of its mother’s heart. A moment later, Hyungwon crawled into the empty space beside Naran and joined her head on the pillow so they could both stare at the little moon face who had finally stopped screaming. His arm wrapped around his wife’s waist as he pressed his forehead to hers.

“Welcome to the world, little princess,” cooed the empress as she tickled her finger under the baby’s chin. There was marvel in Indeok’s eyes as she whispered, “A granddaughter… How lovely. I always wanted a little girl. She’s perfect.”

“She is,” echoed Hyungwon.

Naran nodded, a drowsy smile pasted on her lips. Her words were slurred with both exhaustion and love as she said, “Someone please tell my Magda, though, no doubt her ear is already at the door.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it, My Lady!” came the trembling proclamation through the wall along with the telltale hiccup of poorly controlled sobs of joy.

Indeok laughed and kissed all three of her loved ones on the forehead before she stood, smoothed out her hanbok, wiped another round of tears from her eyes, and headed for the door. “I will share the good news with the palace. You three stay here and fall deeper in love.”

“My mother,” laughed Hyungwon, “ever the poet.”

“Yes, well, I have much to write about these days, do I not? I will send for some fresh cold water and some nourishment. Congratulations, Your Highnesses,” said the empress with a deep bow for the two generations behind her.

“Thank you, Mother,” Naran said weakly though it was with a grateful smile.

With that, Indeok slipped out, and the last thing the princess saw before the door closed was Magda’s red face bloated with tears and a toothy grin.

“Saran is going to be so disappointed she missed this,” murmured the princess.

“How can she be disappointed with such a mesmerizing creature here to greet her?”

Naran smiled and sighed effervescently.

“How are you feeling, my love?” Hyungwon asked.

“Exhausted and very sore, but never better.”

“Whatever you need, just tell me,” he urged.

“A kiss?” suggested the princess, tearing her eyes away from the squirming, huffing bundle on her chest to her husband’s glowing face.

The prince planted a lingering kiss on her lips before he nuzzled his nose along hers, and then they returned their loving gazes to their new baby.

“What shall we name her?” asked Naran, entranced.

“How about something Moghul?”

She gawked at her husband. “You want to name a Goryeon princess something Moghul? The Emperor will laugh us out of the realm.”

“You’re still here, Princess Narangerel,” he teased.

“Yes, but I walked into this role. I wasn’t born into it, and I’m certainly not the granddaughter to the mighty Emperor Gongmin.”

Hyungwon scoffed playfully. “By the time Goryeon Court gets done with its thirty million ceremonies, our little star will be gifted another thirty million names of distinction. She is ours and her name should be a special gift from us.”

“I love you,” Naran blurted suddenly.

The prince kissed her again, slowly and gently, careful not to wake the tiny pink bean now slumbering. When he pulled back, he said, “So, is that a yes to a Moghul name?”

“Absolutely yes, and I think I have the perfect one.”

“Let me hear it, my darling.”

“Odgerel.”

Hyungwon tested it out on his lips, and by the last syllable, the name had curled them into a smile. “What does it mean?”

“Well, my name means sunlight, my sister’s, moonlight, and Odgerel means starlight. I thought since you have called us both your little star—”

“I love it. It’s brilliant.”

“You do?” Naran asked excitedly.

The prince nodded. “It’s a name fit for a princess of two realms, but more importantly, a name fit for our little princess. Odgerel.”

“Odgerel,” repeated the Princess Supreme as she studied the scrunched face of her daughter. With a happy sigh, Naran said, “She has your button nose.”

Hyungwon grinned a wonky grin and tightened his arm around his girls. “You think so?”

“Mm, definitely. I loved that nose the moment I saw it,” his wife said as she kissed him on its rounded tip.

“Naran?”

“Hm?” she murmured, her eyelids drooping with every passing blissful second.

“This is the happiest day of my life.”

“Mm, mine too…” said she as she drifted in and out. “I love you, Wonnie.”

The prince kissed both his princesses’ crowns then, and with the last of her consciousness, Naran heard her husband whisper, “I love you more than anything, my lights of my life.”

A/N: I hope I fulfilled my promises to you and delivered the fluffy, joyous ending our leads deserved. At over 125k, we can add another tally to my MX archives of excessive indulgence. I know there’s a serious lack of chapter Hyungwon fics out there (why??? He’s so deserving of adventures and romance and happyhappyhappy endings. Where are you, my fellow writers??? *sob*), so I’m super-duper happy to have contributed something now for other people who resent this, too.

Thank you all for including me in your reading experience! I feel privileged. <3 I write everything with love, so I’m thrilled that so many of you felt that.

The MX community is comparatively so quiet despite how large and international its fanbase actually is, so I feel the compulsion to continue to contribute on the regular. Tokyo MER: Mobile Emergency Room Whump List

Synopsis: Tokyo MER was formed by order from the Governor of Tokyo. The members are emergency care professionals who go to sites of dangerous accidents and disasters using ER cars. Their ER car is a large vehicle equipped with the latest medical devices and an operating area where Tokyo MER saves the lives of the injured.

Kitami Kota is a doctor for Tokyo MER and its leader. He holds firm convictions that he goes to accident sites to save lives regardless of the dangers.

Toonami Weekly Recap 06/24/2023

Dr. Stone: New World (Age of Exploration Arc) EP#39 (04) - Eyes of Science: The existence of Why-Man is heavily debated as he may be a new enemy. Senku immediately crafts Scientific Eyes, using glass coated in Sphalerite and the electricity channeling power of crystals he creates a rudimentary Cathode-ray tube television screen, which when connected to the radio tower becomes a radar/sonar to accurately pinpoint targets over vast distances, even underwater. Testing the sonar Chrome is astounded it can even find fish, a welcome bonus for the upcoming voyage. The next issue arises; an engine big enough for a ship will requires tonnes of iron. Surprisingly it is Chrome who solves the issue; using what he learned from Senku he connects an electromagnet to the radar and spontaneously reinvents the Metal detector. Locating an iron deposit in a cave mile from the village they begin mining with Senku declaring they have reached the Industrial Revolution. Senku uses a petrol by-product plus gravel to make Asphalt concrete, allowing iron to be driven from the mine to the river by a paved road where Ryusui then sails it to the village. Under Senku and Kaseki's expertise the Minecarts are designed to make mining the iron even easier.

Unicorn: Warriors Eternal EP#09 - A Love's Last Light: The Evil takes over the cosmic realm and traps the heroes within it as well, where they learn that the Evil intends to destroy time itself.

This entire EP is classically ITZY in a tween-ish, speak-sing, polarizing way.

01. SNEAKERS ☆

The point about this title track being a sneaker advertisement material has already been said and will likely be run into the ground soon enough.

One of my problems with the track is its intensity. After listening to it a few times through, I can say that the song feels flat to me; the attempts to slow down and speed up and add momentum are ineffective. From start to finish, SNEAKERS is running but the path is so flat, it’s a little painful. For a song to stay around the same intensity, it has to be interesting on another front. Take aespa’s Next Level: they play with the idea of song structure and verse. All of the patterns and beat changes, aside from the chorus, are never repeated. It redefines what a song’s structure consists of, while remaining a similar level of intensity throughout the entire piece. Is ITZY playing with anything particularly interesting? No.

That being said, the girls flow really well on the song and the beat is bouncy and fun. The prechorus is enjoyable! Though Yuna’s vocal on the final prechorus segment during the bridge is a little painful, every other vocal part is fine. I don’t think I’ll give it a casual listen, though.

02. RAC3R

I do like this one better than SNEAKERS but even with its audibly offensive drop instrumental (à la 4th gen noise music samples) it struggles to do anything inventive or new. That’s okay though! If someone enjoys this and streams or buys it, then it has completed its goal of commercial music. The verses and prechoruses are quite good, a little reminiscent of Bring the Noize by NCT 127 but without its digital feel and enjoyable chorus. I can’t listen to whatever sound that is in the chorus several times over just for the verses though, but if you can, power to you.

03. WHAT I WANT

This does the 180 degree reversal better than RAC3R does by a long shot. I actually was reminded of CLC’s I Like It a lot with the way it changes from a more hip, dark, trap verse to a lighter, sweeter prechorus, which then returns to its original state. During that prechorus though, I feel like they’re a little out of their comfortable singing range. It’s very girlboss runway VOGUE fashion but also definitely ITZY.

04. FREE FALL

The verses were fine... but the “weee” is so unserious I don’t know if I can listen to the song with a clear conscience. The release of the chorus does give the feel of a free fall, especially because of the heaviness of the beat behind the regular verses. I do like the little ITZY chant before the pre-chorus. My mind was blown! By the fact that with their big-budget JYP lyricists, we got a math lyric. I knew we were camping out in the teen sound, but to mention high school math and/or physics? A little too far, in my opinion.

05. 365

Not even five seconds in and immediately: I know this one. It’s Earthquake by NCT 127. The verses are kinda brain-grating annoying with the metallic, abrasive instrumental. Also, according to Genius, the lyric is “tick-tock, it's time” but in my head, they are referring to the app and I cannot get behind that. This is reinforced by the fact that it is preceded by “Five, five to midnight” and in my head, that’s when teens are stapled to the app. Even without that, I just can’t find the song enjoyable. In the same vein as SNEAKERS, 365 is rather monotone.

06. DOMINO

This song is airy, and reminiscent of a late night summer car drive. Not what I expected from ITZY, even though this song isn’t really that slow or ballad-esque. That being said, nothing about it is very ITZY; it’s generic. Every other song I could probably come to the conclusion through the production that it was made for this group. I can’t say the same for this song. It’s not bad though.

07. SNEAKERS (Eng. Ver.)

I have the feeling that this song was first written in English. Everything I said about the Korean version applies here. It’s only mildly cringy lyrically, though I wouldn’t listen to it over the Korean version because my lack of understanding allows me to be free of lines like “I'm fly to be straight up” and “Trailer's got you pumped”. (The latter is confusing because what trailers are we referring to? Did you mean trainers? Did you mean the CHECKMATE fake-out teasers?)

Overall, this EP feels like a regression in the quality of ITZY’s music. That take is completely subjective, by the way, but I find that LOCO and its b-sides were enjoyable while still having that ITZY feel to them. This one takes it in a different direction that feels more juvenile than anything else they have come out with and their b-side catalog is still stagnant in quality; that is to say it has one or two good songs for every five. That is not the best ratio. If I had to give SNEAKERS a numerical rating, I’d probably give it a 5/10. Average, at best. For the entire CHECKMATE EP, probably a 4/10 because I only enjoyed 2 b-sides, and even those felt like I was on the struggle bus.
