ATEEZ Theory TidBits Ep 7 - What did TREASURE Epilogue: Action to Answer contribute to the storyline?

ATEEZ’s fifth album, a mini album, again, released 3 months after the fourth. It was the last album in the TREASURE series.

Action to Answer was the epic (I guess) finale of the TREASURE series, and supposed to be the end of the ATEEZ storyline, kind of. By the end of the album we thought that the group had reconciled with HALAteez and that they had reached the Treasure together... Needless to say, KINGDOM and later comebacks proved this was certainly not the case.

Only the particularly important things, not the random, daily content that groups put out as part of their... existence. Everything ATEEZ does have some references or relevance to their storyline, but that doesn’t mean that all ATEEZ storyline content is created equal.

Additions to the storyline

The album was a deceptive finale to the storyline so far. We had the cool wrap-up in ‘ANSWER’ - HALAteez and Treasureteez came together, possibly had a truce, and, based on ‘Outro: Long Journey,’ we saw that they had reached their Treasure.

But then we got to ‘Precious,’ which was a bit bizarre in theme for such a triumphant end to a series. And the start of ‘Outro: Long Journey’ sounds great, but then you get to the end, and that voice comes in saying ‘can you hear those voices?’ and everything just goes out the window.

What the hell was that? Which voices? Who what when where why? Was it HALAteez possessing them again and betraying them? Was it the dude in the white suit who showed up at the end of the MV? Hongjoong? Wooyoung?

Anyway, no one knew, and pretty much no one still knows. But it was definitely creepy. So at that point we were pretty sure that we hadn’t seen the end of the storyline, and that it would continue in the next era.

Meaning of the album name

The actions they took in Treasure Ep Fin took them to this answer - the answer we see in ‘Ode to Joy’ as HALAteez sacrifice themselves for Treasureteez to find their Treasure.

Track breakdown

Answer - Reaching the answer - which is interesting. They never tell us what the answer is, and judging from the later albums, I’m not so sure that they found it, honestly. Actually, I suppose that the answer is putting in your all and not being afraid to stretch yourself and things. But that’s like the plot of every coming-of-age film to ever exist.

Horizon - Let’s continue on our journey to reach the Horizon together - goals and dreams and everything in between. An epic ballad made by our one and only Joong.

Star 1117 - It’s sweet and shows their love for ATINY. People still aren’t entirely sure what the 1117 means.

Precious - Most people say it’s literally the ‘evil’ version of ‘Treasure’ - disaster and loss of dreams instead of the hope of a new journey.

Outro: Long Journey - They reached the Treasure - or did they?

Reactions from the fandom

I mean, what do I say except for that everyone loved it? Center Yeosang in ‘Horizon’ was especially a big plus for people. And watching reaction videos is so fun because as soon as anyone sees the dinner table scene where the two groups show up and THEY’RE IN THE SAME ROOM, PEOPLE! And Hongjoong’s toasting himself, adn everything, and anyone who reacts to it for the first time - their jaw just drops. It’s hilarious.

My semi-professional perspective of the storytelling, production and production values, etc

I thought it was a bit of a filler album. While it obviously had importance to the storyline, there were only 5 tracks and only three of them were really important. Of course, they were all well-produced, and the ‘ANSWER’ MV was a masterpiece, which also introduced the FEVER album era. It did a really good job of what it needed to do, and it introduced so many people to ATEEZ. It was iconic and legendary, and, as with all installments of the storyline, was high-quality.

That said, it was kind of like a really high-quality, high-budget filler episode for a cartoon. Think the international specials of Miraculous Ladybug, or the between-season specials of Total Drama. That’s what this was. Important and high-quality, but also filler. Yeah it sounds like a paradox. Yeah that’s what it was.

Quality of the album

It was very good. No matter what the postman does with the package, your ATEEZ albums are going to come out in top quality, without a scratch!

Other important things to note

This was the era that I became an ATINY! Happy two-and-3/4 years of me being an ATINY!

Conclusions

A very iconic album but didn’t do much for them and was kind of boring in terms of the storyline, especially compared to the previous three. Although, I suppose the storyline gets more boring after they’ve established the major elements of their storyworld.

Epilogue

The summer breeze messed with Y/n’s locks, even though that didn’t disturb her slumber. Matty ran a hand softly through the strands of hair falling on his lap. His sight admired the lake in front of them and the sun reaching every corner of the park except the place they chose for a break during that summer day.

Matty stared at the broken light –getting through the leaves of the tree above them– playing on his girlfriend’s face. His factions softened when his eyes traced every part of her beautiful face. She had fallen asleep shortly after they arrived, and he started reading out loud for her. When she proposed the idea, Matty protested saying how cheesy it was, although she only had to flutter her eyelashes and he started clearing his throat before pronouncing the first word of the book Y/n selected.

The singer's calloused hands touched slightly her forehead, drawing lines along the skin, then her nose, to finish caressing the apple of her cheeks. ‘I’m a lucky bastard’, Matty thought.

After a few minutes, Y/n protested, still partially asleep, “Mmm.” she mumbled, but Matty didn’t stop.

Y/n blinked her eyes open, looking up at her boyfriend’s face, meeting his eyes. She groaned due to tiredness overtaking her senses. The quick action made Matty laugh.

“Hey, sleepy.” he whispered, feeling another breeze of air surrounding them.

Matty’s girlfriend let herself enjoy his touch, still on her face. “I’m sorry.” Y/n apologized. “Your voice and the weather are just too good.”

“Happy to help, my love.” he smiled down at her, even when her eyes were still closed.

Y/n felt her stomach move a little, and her hand instantly went to rest over her growing belly. She loved Matty with all her heart. Those simple moments of peace together were everything Y/n wanted to cherish for the rest of their lives. The intimacy they built during the past year and a half was their biggest treasure until she arrived.

When she moved looking for a better position since her back started hurting, Matty helped her. Y/n ended up sitting on his lap, with her back meeting his front. Matty’s hands met on Y/n front, caressing the skin under her blouse.

“How much did I sleep?” Y/n ask, resting her head on his shoulder.

Matty answered right away, “Probably half an hour.”

“How long until you noticed?”

“Five minutes.” he chuckled.

“Matty!”

“Don’t look at me. You looked too peaceful to wake you up, baby. Besides, you haven’t slept that well in days.”

He was the sweetest man walking the earth. Y/n took his free hand, lifting it until her lips left multiple kisses on the back of it.

“She’s being a little troublemaker already.” Matty teased.

“Mhm.”

“You’re never this tired when i fuc-”

“Matty!” Y/n protested, turning as best as she could, looking at his face. “Do I have to remind you how did I get…?

“Yes, please. I want a step by step manual of everything we did-”

Y/n frowned, saying, “Shut up.”

“I love you.” Matty replied, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear, making her heart melt.

The singer’s girlfriend let herself lean forward, encountering him in a sweet kiss.

After a few minutes and multiple kisses, Y/n pushed back, “I need to drop by the shop.” Matty frowned listening to her say that. “New delivery.” she clarified.

“You can do it tomorrow. I’ll help you.”

“I’ve already told Kate to help me.”

“Cheater.”

“You can help too.” she reassured him.

“I can see how this is going to be. Me doing all the hard work and you two ogling over me.”

“Excuse me?”

“I have a nice butt.” Matty shrugged his shoulders.

“...now.” Y/n added.

The singer groaned loudly, “I forbid Kate to show you those pictures.”

“Love, she doesn’t hear us, and besides I have a phone.”

“Oh, do you have a Pinterest board for me?” he giggled his eyebrows. ‘He can be so annoying sometimes’, she thought.

“I don’t like you.” Y/n breathed out.

Surprising Matty and herself, Y/n stood up rather quickly with little problems due to her current state. She whipped her hands on the back of her jeans, looking down at Matty. He reached up, touching her belly again. The man was obsessed with it.

“How’s it called?” Matty continued messing with her.

“Asshole.” Y/n whispered, making him laugh.

The singer moved his other hand into the air, making a weird voice, “Matty, my perfect boyfriend.”

“Bye!” the woman simply said, starting to walk away.

“Baby!”

Matty was at the top of the stairs, a few books resting on his arm between his chest and his bicep. Meanwhile, Y/n stood at the bottom of the stairs, being unable to do the job that was needed. Her hands rested on the small part of her back, she was very sore. The sight above her was a nice reassurance, though.

“You lucky girl.”

Kate’s voice came from behind her head. Her best friend took place beside her, her eyes glutted to Matty’s body, exactly how Y/n had been doing moments before.

“Shush.” she said after a quick glance.

Matty stretched far from the stairs, putting the last book on the shelf. “And…done!”

The singer looked down, expecting to see only Y/n there. He got a little stunned when two pairs of eyes were staring at him and not exactly his work. But his mood quickly changed to a smugly one.

“Liking the view, guys?” he asked.

“Yep.” Kate admitted with zero shame on her tone.

Matty snorted, “Didn’t you have a girlfriend?”

“Didn’t you have one?”

“Mhm, she lets her crazy friend look at my ass.”

“I own it.” Y/n stated.

“You do.”

Kate looked between them, “You two are gross.”

“And yet you stare at my ass.” Matty said coming down.

“I can appreciate art when I see it.”

It was Y/n’s time to protest, “Kate!”

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcomed.” Matty thanked Y/n’s friend, standing closer to his girlfriend, reaching for her belly once more.

“Am I bothering you guys? Should I leave?” Y/n joked.

Kate rolled her eyes. “Jealousy doesn’t look good on you, Y/n.”

“Funny ha-ha.”

“I should leave, though.”

Kate explained to them, grabbing her back, that it was at the other side of the shop, although she returned. Y/n watched her kneeled down, whispering silly things to her belly, ending with a sweet kiss.

“Vick is waiting for me.” Kate continued the conversation as if nothing happened in between.

Matty whistled, gaining a stern look from her.

“He’s lucky to have nice buttocks.” Kate said directly to her friend. “Bye.”

After the door closed, Matty went directly to the big couch, plopping down with a big huff. He opened his arms wide, searching for Y/n’s eyes. She was already staring at him.

“Baby…” he started. She knew that tone.

“No, I still have work.” Y/n started turning around, but not two steps before he pushed her towards the couch.

Mayhem who was on the other couch, tired by the intense heat, opened and closed his eyes, annoyed with his owners. Y/n extended her hand, touching his fur, avoiding Matty’s eyes above her.

“You deserve a break.” she could feel him lingering on top of her.

“Maybe but-”

Matty shut her up with a series of sweet kisses that ended –of course– on her belly. He kneeled down in front of her and their doggy.

“To think this is where it all started…” he spoke, a bit lost inside his own head. Y/n detached her eyes and hand from Mayhem’s form, leaving the sweet dog to rest.

“The bookshop?” their hands met shortly after asking him.

“Yes.”

“Thanks to your crazy fans, too.”

Matty chuckled, “They love you.”

“I bet they want my place.”

“The bookshop?”

“To be underneath you.” Y/n teased.

“Ah!” Matty exclaimed, going to sit beside her. “You like that, don’t ya?”

“Why are you talking so much?”

“What should I do?”

“Kiss me, Matty.”

“Since you asked nicely…” Matty smiled at Y/n, grabbing her face and pulling his face closer.

Meanwhile the future parents shared a sweet moment after an evening of hard work, all the surrounding universes inside the bookshop continued witnessing –like they did since the first day– their love that continued growing strong.

FANDOM BREAKDOWN : SENA STANS EDITION

within the atiny fandom, some atiny that bias the female member have claimed the sub-fandom name "sailor-pies". many of these fans either bias sena, or are solo stans within the fandom. the name "sailor-pies" come from a combo of the words “sailor” and “pies” with sailor from sena’s favorite anime sailor moon and pies from the snack moon pies.

NICKNAMES : not my sailor guardians

FAN DEMOGRAPHIC

AGE RANGE : many of sena’s fans are older than her, especially when she was in cupid’s rejects. nowadays there’s kind of a mix of ages with some fans now being around sena’s age or younger. however there is still a good percentage of fans that are older than her.

GENDER : as of 2023, around 60% of atiny that stan sena identify as female. this the highest that it’s been since before she left cupid’s rejects. 25% of atiny that stan sena identity as male which is the lowest it’s been since 2017. when sena first debuted she had a majority of male fans — which is what kq wanted, but as ateez got popular the want for that by the company went down. there’s also around a 15% of atiny that stan sena that identify as “other” which leaves it pretty ambiguous. within recently years (since 2020) sena has gained popularity among the lgbtq+ community especially in south korea.

REGION : sena is most popular in east asia, north america, oceania, and europe. her largest fanbases are found in korea, japan, thailand, america, italy, austraila, and new zealand.

FAN REPUTATION

FRIENDLY : many star-pies have shown numerous times to be friendly with other atiny and fandoms. the only real exception is wooyoung stans. many sena stans are also rather outgoing and the first ones to help new atiny learn about the group and such. so if you want to learn about sena and ateez, star-pies are your go to on that topic.

POSSESSIVE : this trait mainly comes from fans thinking that the other members of ateez are trying to take sena away from them. they don’t want sena and the guys to be acting friendly with each other for any reason. they also don’t like seeing her possible interacting with other male idols for the same reason. fans with this trait claim to have sena’s best intentions, but we all know that they don’t actually mean that. of course as expected quite a few saesangs of sena have this trait.

PROTECTIVE : this trait is the opposite of the previous one in the sense that fans who are protective only want what is best for sena. they don’t want a repeat of sour grapes and cupid’s rejects. star-pies / atiny with this trait are quick to defend sena and her place in ateez saying that ateez wouldn’t be ateez without all nine of them.

HUMORUS : star-pies are hilarious and are great at catching screenshots of sena’s reactions during videos. they are also not below clowning sena or one of the boys when they do something silly. 9 times out of 10 a star-pie is gonna have a meme face of sena as their pfp or an edit of her with a clown face.

FAN TRIVIA

star-pies have a strong feud with wooyoung stans and often get into fights with them on social media. they started feuding around 2019 when videos of sena and wooyoung from a fansign “arguing” with each other was circulating on twitter.

most star-pies have been fans since sena's cupid's rejects days that came over when she debuted in ateez. this is also where a lot of her solo stans come from.

a lot of star-pies actually hated ateez’s concept for sena when they first debuted, saying it didn’t fit the idol at all; however, opinion on this as a majority has seemed to change after inception came out. this is mainly from cupid’s rejects stans not wanting to let go of the past.

there’s actually a group of star-pies who are stay-at-moms and have been dubbed “star-moms”. these fans first gain attention within the fandom after a group of moms showed up to support some of sena’s solo work in 2021. this caused atiny and netizens to dub sena as the “nation’s daughter-in-law” because of how she has quite a few mom stans.

a lot of sena stans that are also multi-stans are notably mainly girl group stans. this probably adds to the fact that sena is only female in the group and girl group stans only check ateez out because of sena.

a bad joke that went around in the early days of ateez was atiny calling sena “oppa” because jongho had accidentally did it. however, like most jokes this was taken to far and sena had asked fans to not call her that and even cried once at a fansign because of it. since then most fans have listened to sena; there are still some who do it thinking they are “friends” or “close” to the idol.

When teasing goes a bit too far [pt.1]

Summary: Asra's and N's last visit to the marketplace leads them to an unexpected situation, and N's reaction to it cannot leave his mind.

Notes: I feel like the first part is a bit messy but oh well. I never know what to expect of my own writing in a language that isn't spanish XD

It had been a silly comment, really. It all had started in one of their visits to the marketplace, in one of those rare moments that they got separated and both Asra and N went their own ways. It had been a silly situation, really.

It didn't matter to N that they could not find the deck they were looking for: they had gotten some pumpkin bread for sale and sharing that with Asra was enough to make them walk to their meeting point with a smile. They were skipping as they walked, happy for the tasty treasure they had found, until the view of Asra made them slow down. The marketplace was crowded that morning and maybe N couldn't see well with all those people between them, but they could swear they had just caught a glimpse of an annoyed look in Asra's eyes. As if a sixth sense dictated it, N adopted a serious look as they made their way through the crowd.

Only noise got to their ears. Although they couldn't hear any of the banter between the stranger and their partner, Asra's expression spoke a thousand words to them. He wasn't comfortable there, and N would not allow that to go on.

When Asra tried to end the conversation and escape, the stranger pulled from his cape and made them let out a groan of frustration. N saw it as the sign to quickly get in. Bread in one arm and the other prepared to go around Asra's shoulders, they smoothly got in the conversation with the mission of fleeing.

"No, as I said...", Asra's words were interrupted by N barging in.

"Well, hello," N stared at the other person as they clinged to Asra. The stranger was quite slim and carried a bag that looked way bigger than them. What kind of suspicious merchant could that be, now...? "Is my husband bothering you in any way?"

The question left their mouth with a smile. Asra blinked twice, and then held their partner a bit tighter. His gaze went back to the merchant with a confidence boost, sly eyes prepared for whatever comeback N was plotting.

"Yes, actually," they answered with a stubborn tone. "Your husband hasn't paid for the potion recipe he's got from me, so perhaps you're a more responsible partner and will pay me what he owes?"

"Oh, dear," N turned to Asra as they spoke, faces close to each other because of their side hug. "Is that true?"

"You know I would never do that, my love," they smiled back, happily going along with N’s actions and slipping his hand over their waist. "This merchant here just shared part of a recipe when I didn't even ask about it, and now they are trying to charge me for it."

N stared at Asra for a bit longer before turning to the merchant again. "Looks like we don't owe anything here. I'm sure Asra The Magician knows better than stealing someone's potion recipes in such a simple marketplace." And as soon as their words came to an end, they quickly turned to run away, arms still around their partner to not let him go until they were somewhere safe. Their confident facade had fallen down already, panicked eyes checking behind them to make sure they weren't being followed. Yet Asra was having fun. The meeting had been an annoyance, sure, but N's presence always managed to make things better. And their words. Their words. The memory of N calling them husband threatened to not leave their mind.

They smiled to himself. N looked too nervous to be teased about it at the moment, but they wouldn't be able to escape from him in such a successful way as their current plan had gone. He held them closer and quickened their pace. Whatever it took to make them feel safe.

"Pumpkin bread never disappoints," Asra sighed as they lied down in bed. Curtains were open and the moon's light caressed his features. After N finished changing into their pyjamas, they sat down by the other side of the bed, and now what covered him was his partner's shadow by the moonlight.

"I knew I could make you smile with that one," they softly answered, the atmosphere making them sleepy. So they shifted on the bed, getting comfortable as they supported one hand by the other side of Asra's body. He couldn't help but stare at the way their pink hair made its way down their neck. So softly, so welcoming— turning N into the beautiful view they had always loved to admire.

It was so easy for them to make him smile. Asra gave up counting how many times they felt lucky to have them nearby long ago. And, just today, N had happened to make his heart flutter in a new and so pleasant way. They smiled wider.

"What is it?," N chuckled, noticing how they smiled to himself.

"You look as bright and stunning as the sun from down here." Their praise succeeded at making them laugh, and they bended down to look at him a bit closer.

"Well, I can only see stars shining in your eyes from up here."

"That's just the reflection of your light, trust me."

N nudged him, laughing again. The combination of the teasing tone of their chatting and the soft sheets was so, so comfortable that he was also getting a bit sleepy. Still, his eyes wanted to linger on their features, drawing them in their mind and wishing to soon hear their voice right by his side. Truth be told: they wanted to hear that again.

"How was it that you called me today at the marketplace...?" he teased, squinting his eyes to act as if they didn't remember. "When you appeared like a true hero and saved me from an inevitable scam?"

"Oh," N took a moment to realise what he was referring to, and their expression showed pure surprise. "Sorry for that, I wasn't sure of what was going on so I just blurted it out in kind of an impulse. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."

"Don't worry, you did not." Asra held their hand in reassurance. "I was just teasing. I must confess it made me smile, being called like that," he mentioned as he cuddled their cheek in N's hand.

"Called like what?" The rhetorical question drew a smile on both faces.

"Your husband."

The words came out in a whisper, so close to N's hand that they could have sworn to have felt them within their body. For a moment, words stopped flowing in their head. How to answer something you don't know if it's still a joke?

"Asra Alnazar," they called, and how they loved to say his name out loud. "Are you insinuating you wouldn't mind being my spouse?"

"No, I'm straight up admitting it."

"You—", they chuckled and bent down to kiss their forehead, also as a way to hide their blush. Asra held their hand a bit tighter. He could feel his own heartbeat going faster and feared for N to notice it, too. "You still feel playful at these hours, huh? What would I do with a spouse like you...?"

"Come on, you know I can take care of you. I've shown you many times," he spoke, then kissed their knuckles and stared at them for a moment. "Wait, where's your ring, my spouse?"

"I don't know, you tell me. Where is it, dear?"

Asra covered his eyes with their free hand, the back of it experiencing the warmth of their face increasing. It felt surreal— the power of a word, of N's voice. For legal purposes, these are all allegations.

So, I’m making this little essay/list/thing partly for myself (because I know *I* keep forgetting all of these instances) and partly because I always see incomplete lists going around and it annoys me a little that some of the people on this list seem to have been forgotten for whatever reason. Also, a lot of lists I’ve seen aren’t in chronological order? Which I just find odd. I’m going to try and include as many links as I can to articles, videos, etc, and I’ll be including pictures from them here, just to make it easier for you lovely readers.

(Also, if you think I'me being biased towards koreaboo articles, it's only because they embedded the tweets they used correctly, so they actually click through. Other sites I looked at, either the tweets show an error, or they're static images of low quality.)

MONOPOLY, HOLY MOLY – 2020 (Sept)

I can’t find anything about this artist, it seems to be only one person so maybe they’re just releasing it for fun? They plagiarized Treasure: Epilogue Action To Answer (and not even well, if you look at the shape of the black bar closely).

They did end up apologizing and changing the cover to something else, so at least they have more integrity than some of the other people on this list.

Ammonit, Reverse – 2021 (Oct)

Another small artist or group, Ammonit plagiarized the style of the Fever series album covers. Like Monopoly, Ammonit also changed their cover later. Though I haven’t seen whether or not they issued an apology, at least they changed it.

TRINITY, Life Ain’t Over – 2021 (Dec)

For their 2021 release of *Life Ain’t Over* Thai three-member group TRINITY copied Ateez’s Deja Vu photoshoot (the one member even having the same shirt as wooyoung), and their Fireworks mv. I’m actually not sure if they had ever acknowledged that they were being accused of plagiarism or not or apologized when I tried searching. (I thought someone had made a video comparing the two, but I can’t seem to find it.)

Now we get into Ateez’s worst year for plagiarism (so far)...

Soyeon, Sun – 2022 (Feb)

This is probably one of the biggest ones to happen, I won’t lie. I remember the indignation of Atiny, the disappointment of (G)-IDLE fans, and general disappointment and confusion by Knets.

This was the finale of the survival show My Teenage Girl, and the song in the video, Sun, was written for the contestants by (G)-IDLE member, Soyeon. The chorus sounds like a pitched up version of the chorus from Ateez’s Wave.

At first people wondered if it was maybe a sample, but it wasn’t. To sum up the initial discussion:

Then on Feb 28th it got weird, because suddenly EDEN-ary (Ateez’s production team) had a credit on the song on Bugs (though this wasn’t changed on other platforms).

Also on the 28th, KQ issued a statement after receiving reports from fans about the similarity:

“On the 27th, the Challenge Team’s stage, called ‘SUN’, was broadcast for the first round of the FINALs on My Teenage Girl. Afterward, we received multiple reports through the company’s official channel and mails from webmasters that the song’s chorus melody was similar to ATEEZ’s ‘WAVE’, which was released in 2019. As the company was monitoring the related issue, they discovered that the company’s producing team, Eden-ary, was listed in the credits for ‘SUN.’ We want to clarify that we did not have any discussions before with the company or Eden-ary. In hopes of respecting creators and their unique works and in hopes that any misinformation can be corrected, we ask everyone to refrain from making unreasonable assumptions regarding the issue. Thank you.”

So they did not have discussions with CUBE about the use of Wave prior to the premier of Sun on MBC.

CUBE then released a statement:

“Hello, this is CUBE Entertainment. We would like to explain what happened on MBC’s My Teenage Girl regarding the song ‘SUN’ and (G)I-DLE’s Soyeon. First, we sincerely apologize for the concerns caused by the production of the song ‘SUN.’ Following the broadcast, through monitoring the episode, we recognized some of the similarities in the two melodies. Our artist immediately reached out to the original composer to explain the situation and apologize. In this process, especially since we admitted the similarities, we decided the song credits should be edited and properly given to the original composer. Soyeon discussed this option with the original composer and we asked the producers of the show to implement the credit change.”

So their statement seems to be that they realized the similarities after, and that Soyeon contacted EDEN-ary and then added them to the song credits. Their statement continues:

“An hour before the song’s release, however, the original composer’s agency declined our suggestion to be credited. We asked the producers of the show to undo the credit change but the change could not be applied and the song became released as-is.”

So, an hour before the show aired, they called up KQ, KQ declined a song credit (I would guess because it sort of made it look like a collaboration and let CUBE/Soyeon off the hook for plagiarism), and it was too late to change it.

Soyeon’s statement is a little different:

“After the episode aired, I thought I should apologize to the original composer for some of the similarities that have been suggested. So I got in touch with the original composer, explained what happened, and apologized for it.”

In that, in her recounting of events, her apology took place *after* the show aired.

NMIXX, OO – 2022 (Feb)

Someone at JYP is a BIG Ateez fan, I think. There are similarities between the look of their mvs (NMIXX even having some locations be the same as Ateez’s mvs), but there’s similarities with lyrics, graphic design choices, and lore. Basically, the only thing that isn’t similar is their sound.

The studio DIGIPEDI has worked with Ateez before and worked on NMIXX’s O.O video, but Illusion (the mv that NMIXX’s debut seems to mirror most strongly) is not one that DIGIPEDI worked on.

Now, while it’s not as if another group can’t have a pirate ship, can’t have a dreamy landscape - in fact, the group Treasure has a flying ship and a dreamy landscape in some of their mvs - but, as someone observed:

(I apologize for having to screencap a tweet from an article, but Mr. Muskrat has made his website so unusable that I can’t even find the original tweet.)

Even if the production team at JYP somehow happened on the same concept and look that Ateez has used for years, it would still be on them to realize, “Oops, this is too similar, we need to change something before people think we’re copying,” and then change the things that were too similar so they didn’t look like they had no ideas. Marketing research is a thing that companies that make stuff (even music) do as a prelude to starting a project, so I don't understand why it seems like JYP's team didn't do any.

Like, Charles Dickens had books where people were arrested for stealing bread, Les Miserables has a main character arrested for stealing bread, the Disney movie Aladdin has a character almost arrested for stealing bread; having the action “someone stealing bread” doesn’t mean that all of those creators have stolen the idea from each other, the idea exists as an idea a lot of people have. Just like flying ships and flying whales (Gojira, anybody?) and pirates and dreamlands aren’t owned by anybody - not even Ateez - it’s when you use all the ideas someone else has already used, and you use them in a way that looks JUST like the person or people you got the ideas from that it starts to become a problem. You can take inspiration from someone or something else, but you can’t just take That Thing and make it “2 inches to the left,” you know? For instance, I might read Lord of the Rings and want to write a book with elves and dwarves and a terrifyingly evil bad guy with a ring - those are all things in other stories that no one owns - but I CAN’T write a story where a group of people take a ring once owned by a terrifyingly evil bad guy and bring it to a volcano to throw it in, I have to write a different story where the ring does something else and the elves and dwarves maybe won’t even work together and there’s a different type of battle, and the bad guy looks a different way and maybe isn’t even a guy, and the world doesn’t look like Middle Earth-- and definitely I can’t use hobbits because they’re legally owned by the Tolkien estate because they were his original idea (that’s why they’re called “halflings” in DND, because of legal reasons.)

Anyway, back to normalcy. Please direct your attention to the lyrics portion of this video:

There’s a lot of similarities with their lyrics as well, so I don’t think NMIXX’s look kind of being “Ateez but 2 inches to the left” is as coincidental as some people wanted others to believe.

(PS: this is not me hating on the girls in NMIXX at all, they seem talented and nice. This is about one of the Big Three companies having a production team that doesn't need to copy others but seem to have done so anyway. But, since their look and even their sound seems to have changed a whole hell of a lot since debut, it seems like JYP has sort of abandoned NMIXX’s look at debut?)

Eltee Skhillz, Odg – 2022 (Mar)

I think I have a moral obligation to make the joke, “His name is Eltee Skhillz [elite skills], but the only thing he’s skilled at is not having his own ideas.” (I think I’m allowed to be salty, he really went frame by frame as he copied.)

Eltee Skhillz (or someone in his team) put in the youtube description of the mv, “Partly inspired by ATEEZ "The Real" and "Say my name" music video”. Please see my earlier tangent about how inspiration and copying are not the same.

Vata, New Thing choreo – 2022 (Oct)

This accusation was about a point of choreography. On the dance competition show Street Man Fighter, We Dem Boyz leader Vata performed a dance move that looked pretty similar to Atinys:

This is straight up the Driving move from Ateez’s first comeback, Say My Name. It’s in between a “starting a bike” move and a “getting off a bike move”, but the move in between is the SMN Driving move.

Interestingly enough, there’s a moment in Street Man Fighter where We Dem Boyz is unhappy that it seems that another group has copied their choreography, and they say, “They copied about four counts,” of the choreo, from 1:48 - 1:54:

I WISH I could find this other video, where they were in the middle of a dance battle on the show, and Vata copied another groups move. The other group got annoyed and started arguing and Vata and his group said, “If it’s three beats, we’ll consider it copied.” Meaning: if someone does 1 oe 2 beats of someone else's move, it's not copied, but 3 or more beats is. I just found that so funny because Vata insists he didn’t copy the SMN move, but it’s 3 or 4 beats, both of which match with WDB's (conflicting) arguments for why they didn't copy other teams during Street Man Fighter.

(If anyone finds that clip, please let me know. I saw it around the time everything was happening but I can’t find it now. It was sort of dark and the two groups were in kind of a tight ring as the members of each were dance battling and the camera angle was from higher up.)

During the show the groups were allowed to “vandalize” each other’s rooms earlier in the season, and other groups wrote some interesting things on We Dem Boyz flag:

JBLAZE (along with Anze Skrube and Josh Smith) are the choreographers who created the dance for Say My Name (Anze credited Josh with creating the Drive move). Coincidentally, Melvin Timtim is another choreographer who also worked with Ateez, so that’s kind of interesting that the other groups accused WDB of copying him as well. It seems as if Vata has a well known history (in the dance community) of copying other choreographers.

Anze Skrube took to Instagram to reblog some posts regarding the situation (there was more than just this, he was popping off for days) and talked about it on his Stories:

Mnet also coddled Vata, not taking a stance, but saying "We are in the midst of arranging a position while respecting the situation of the artist (Vata) as much as possible." Which fans HATED, because - if anyone needs to be respected here - it’s the people who were stolen from, not the one doing the stealing. (What the *fuck* Mnet? Why are you like this? This is why kpop fans use a snake emoji when they talk about you and how shady you are.)

“This is Vata. I thought this would be a cold wind that would breeze by, but I am writing this to stop the misunderstandings. When I first heard the song, I thought of the wilderness and so I made the intro of riding a horse or motorcycle. That’s why in the beginning, there is a motion of kicking to start the engine and a motion of getting off the bike. These are parts of one move that transition from one to the other. I think the choreography its being compared to has a different transition and means something different entirely. As someone who loves the dance culture, I believe it is at its best when the artist and dancer respect one another. It saddens me to see that this isn’t taking place. Regardless of the reason, I apologize to viewers of Street Man Fighter and to those who root for We Dem Boyz for any controversy that had occurred on my behalf. I just have to say: this really reads like one of those youtube apologies, where the youtuber deflects and doesn’t want to be held accountable for their actions. He also seems to say that Wooyoung and Anze are being disrespectful by calling him out. (And he even said "I was hoping this would blow over" I don't think you're supposed to say that in your "apology" even if you were thinking it, homes."

While everyone was doing WDB's dance on tiktok, San did the LAW challenge instead (which I feel is a better song anyway, but that's just me) and it seemed that, aside from Wooyoung's call out, and San's snub, KQ was not commenting on it.

Atiny, meanwhile, streamed Say My Name and made art about respecting artists (what Vata had NOT done to Ateez). There were hashtags and SMN challenges and tweets galore:

The thing that made this whole incident REALLY strange, is that the dance Vata had plagiarized the Drive move for was for the kpop artist Zico… who is managed under KQ. So, when the music video for Zico’s song, New Thing, came out, it lacked the drive move at the beginning:

So all the people trying to say that it wasn’t copied or tried to defend Vata (I saw someone say they would defend him because he’s more famous than Ateez… please lick boots somewhere else) didn’t matter because… Zico and KQ thought it was too similar to let it slide.

(Oh! Also, Carats, EXO-Ls, Shawols, Ahgases, Monbebes, ARMYs, ELFs, and Inspirits were spotting tweeting on Atinys’ behalf, so I would like to personally thank our friends who stan other groups for their help and support. The kpop world needs some love more often than not, because we are not each other’s enemy… capitalism is our enemy.)

Super Dragon, Revolution – 2023 (Feb)

I hate trying to look this group up because the SEO for their name is GOD awful. Like you could not pick two more common words to name something. It’s also the name of several restaurants, the co-creator of a California wrestling promotion, and - of course - part of a title for a Dragon Ball series.

Maybe that’s why this is probably the incident I see the least. Maybe it just gets lost in the SEO sauce and no one even sees it so it’s just flying under the radar? Which is weird, because it’s like a combination of the TRINITY incident and the incident that will come next. A Frankensteinian amalgamation of a lack of imagination, if you will.

But oh, oho! I have twitter-- I don’t have twitter, I have *a friend who has twitter,* and she messaged me very early in the morning on February 21st to send me a bunch of tweets of this band:

The thing that - I don’t know if I find it the funniest or if I hate it the most - but the thing is… there’s such a *severe* LACK of imagination. I’m inspired by things all the time, people, places, things, any kind of nouns, inspire me… but like I said earlier, there’s a difference between writing a story with elves and dwarves and just rewriting Lord of the Rings and pretending it’s your own. And this is just a poor man’s version of Wonderland.

3WICH, Kicking Your Face – 2023 (Sept)

On the Taiwanese music competition show, Music Maker, group 3WICH had a song that didn’t just seem similar to Ateez’s Guerrilla, but seemed to be almost a carbon copy:

If you listen to the whole song, it’s literally just been skinned so they could put new lyrics. Originally, 3WICH and their composer, Jhen F, did a livestream where they denied there was any plagiarism, and at first the song had been left up pending investigation, but was soon taken down until the copyright issues could be clarified. The president of the TV station that ran Music Maker, Huang Liang-hsun, made a statement:

Ok i need to gush about this piece of music right here:

This is the last track on Ateez’s album Treasure Ep. Fin : All To Action

Basically, it’s a teaser for their next album and title track (Treasure Epilogue : All To Answer; Answer) but it’s so beautifully arranged. This piece is honestly one of my biggest reasons that i wished k-pop groups would use orchestration in more of their songs. It feels like i’m going on a grand adventure, like i’m standing on the bow of a ship with the wind blowing fiercely in the sails behind me, nothing but open seas ahead.

This piece inspires me: i want to choreograph a dance with a big group of dancers, i want to write poems using the titles of their songs, i want to create a world based on this 1:52 piece of music and be transported there and live there and experience all the emotions of being alive

All in all, i just really love Beginning of the End and I wished that it got more credit. If i ever get the chance to meet Kim Hongjoong (as unlike as it is) i’m going to beg him to use this piece more - to create a full version of Answer using an orchestra because it’s that special, use it for special stages or how they use the Kingdom version of Wonderland. To just do something more with it than letting it sit in an album gathering dust.

First of all, I love this page for Shrike and fking the overthinking that we do here. ( ´ ▽ ` ).｡ｏ♡

But all this reading on this page makes me feel shit with the og!Penny, I know that Penny's change in the manwha is because of Cha Siyeon and her personality is much tamer than her original self, but man it makes me wanna cry at the abuse she originally took. And the analysis you've done on this page makes me always hurt for the torture og!Penny had to take cos of Laila. I don't know how she could forgive all of them since they killed her so many times, especially the Eckharts who abused her. It's really hard to picture any of them with a happy ending with og!Penny, Cha Siyeon could only forgive them to a degree since she was a fragment of the if's soul who couldn't rmb her pain from the past. Being emotionally abused like that is torture, the fact that og!Penny still tried to save them is so heartbreaking. And they would have had the same fate as Cha Siyeon's family where Siyeon left them, because she associated them with her personal pain she rmbs and not the one og!Penny felt originally. (ಡ‸ಡ) I always don't know how to feel about this, so what are your thoughts on this? Should the Eckharts ever be forgiven? Cos like Siyeon eventually forgave them unlike her own family and cos Eckharts eventually treasured her but idk about their past actions. (ᗒᗣᗕ)՞

I always thought there was a degree of abuse apologism in the Eckharts and Siyeon's interactions. While Siyeon constantly commented how "they were just like her own family" and that "she wasn't the real Penelope", THAT WAS FINE. WHAT WAS NOT FINE, WAS THE FACT THAT WHEN IT WAS REVEALED THAT SHE WAS A SHARD OF THE OG!PENELOPE'S SOUL, WE FAST-FORWARDED TO THE EPILOGUE AND THAT THEY WERE MORE OR LESS FORGIVEN.

MISS GIRL. YOU DID NOT FORGIVE YOUR OWN FAMILY, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK Y OU CAN FORGIVE THE ECKHARTS ON THE BEHALF OF SOMEONE WHO IS DEAD BECAUSE OF THEM. EVEN IF YOU WERE A SHARD, YOU DIDN'T HAVE HER TRAUMA OR MEMORIES. YOU DIDN'T HAVE THE RIGHT.

SIYEON DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE ABLE TO FORGIVE THE ECKHARTS. IN MY HUMBLE OPINION SHE SHOULD'VE LEFT CALLISTO AND RETURNED TO EORKA.

KEEP YOURSELF ON YOUR OG GOAL MISSY.

ok i'm slightly more calmed down. I hate the "you were always a part of the original Penelope!! \o/ " because then it's more tragic. The Eckharts only started loving Penelope and treating her better when she didn't have the trauma and memories of their neglect and abuse, and when she was more obedient. It almost creates this narrative of "if you hurt them and break them down long enough, they'll assimilate" and it shows that abuse "makes people better" in their eyes.

Like eventually, og!Penelope had to break and be submissive, and thus "she was finally good enough to be part of the family—" NO.

If I ever get transmigrated into VADD I'm committing arson. Eorka can burn for all I care, and I'm rescuing og!Penelope. I can't care less about Siyeon, tbh. Her character gives me the icks.

yes I realize I was wrong in a previous assumption, and the fact that SIYEON, A MODERN WOMAN, was so willing to participate in slavery is kind of very disturbing(even for her own survival), especially since she was basically treated badly in her own home, and probably treated as a capitalist slave when she worked multiple jobs— still not an Eckles stan, he can still go die for all I care.

Penelope's trauma regarding Laila and the MLs(and the duke) is frankly kind of horrifying. She deserves to be wrapped in blankets and be in a kitty pile.
