FMAB / AoT Comparisons and Contrasts
I was holding off on making this post because I didn’t have enough evidence to compare EVERY aspect from both franchises, but I feel like I have enough evidence to at least explore the similarities between a majority of the main characters and a couple locations. That said, I reserve the right to make a second part to this post if I feel like it.
OKAY! SO!
Because I am an avid, hardcore fan of both Attack on Titan and Fullmetal Alchemist, I began to look compare and contrast characters from both series and oh my goodness the similarities are uncanny- like, y’all, I’m so convinced Isayama took inspiration from FMA, I’d be shocked if he didn’t.
Before I get into anything, I should point out that someone has already made a couple of these observations already in a Reddit post, but I’m just adding onto these findings. Link to the OG post is below.
SPOILERS OBVIOUSLY AHEAD FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT FINISHED EITHER SHOW!!
Alright, so to start off in terms of characters, we’ve got Edward Elric and Eren Jaeger.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They’re both hot-tempered kids who lose their moms and see her suffer in horrific ways.
Their dads also technically walked out on them early on in their lives.
They also lose body parts but get them back at some point.
The deaths of their mothers trigger their character arcs, starting with how? Enlisting in the military.
Then there’s Winry Rockbell and Mikasa Ackerman:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Childhood friends/love interests whose parents died at a young age.
They care deeply about the protagonists.
They’re also terrifying when angry.
Alphonse Elric and Armin Arlert:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The blonde, smart, sensible characters who are almost always by the protagonists’ side.
Got an absolute GLOW-UP as they got older.
Trisha Elric and Carla Jaeger:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mothers to the protagonists who have the signature “dead anime mom” hairstyle.
Died while the protagonists were young.
Their deaths prompted their sons’ character arcs. (If not the entirety of both series.)
Unaware of their husbands’ past.
Van Hohenheim and Grisha Jaeger:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fathers to the protagonists who walk out on their families at an early age.
Both wear glasses and have somewhat? long hair.
Both were either directly or indirectly responsible for murder at some point.
Under the heel of a higher power too. (Grisha with Marley and Hohenheim with Xerxes.)
Jean Havoc and Jean Kirstein:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are literally the same characters, just different shows.
Same first name, same haircut, same mannerisms, SAME ENGLISH VA-
Also kinda got a glow up as they got older.
Once again, if I had a nickel for every time Mike McFarland voiced a character named Jean with an undercut and playboy tendencies, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice, right??
Roy Mustang and Levi Ackerman:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cool, collected and unbelievably badass heartthrobs with black hair and high military ranks.
Also terrifying when pissed off.
Riza Hawkeye and Hange Zoe:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second in command that’s usually by their superior’s side.
Also unbelievably badass.
People may or may not ship them with their superior.
Erwin Smith and King Bradley:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I honestly could not find much similarities between these two except for the fact that they’re both leaders of their military division?
And they both die in the end I guess.
Maes Hughes and Marco Bodt:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The kind, gentle hearted ally of the protagonists who find out the truth about their enemies before anyone else and dies because of it.
Lust and Annie Leonhart:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Female antagonists that get dealt with early on in their series.
Capable of regeneration of their body.
Brings harm to the protagonist’s ally at one point. (Lust with Hughes and Annie with Marco.)
Gluttony and Bertholdt Hoover:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Male antagonists who are usually around or involved with their female partner one way or another (Bertholdt with Annie / Gluttony with Lust).
Care for their female partner a lot.
Both are killed by being eaten by someone (Bertholdt is eaten by Armin / Gluttony is eaten by Pride), but not before desperately crying out for their female partner (Bertholdt cries out for Annie / Gluttony cries out for Lust).
Scar and Reiner Braun:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scorned men and enemies of the protagonist who eventually come after them to get revenge for their homeland(?).
Turn around and become good(?) in the end, fighting alongside the protagonists’ allies against a common but VERY different enemy (Reiner with Eren / Scar with Father).
Truth and Ymir Fritz:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beings from another realm that interact with the protagonist one way or another.
Aid the protagonist realize their full potential, for better (Edward) and for worse (Eren).
Homunculi and Titan Shifters:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mysterious beings with regenerative properties and unique powers.
Their powers can be transferred to new users if the previous users dies(?) (Ex. Greed with Ling / Eating a Titan Shifter as a pure Titan).
I swear I am not crazy, I just have an unhealthy obsession with both of these shows. Making a part two shortly.

BOOK REVIEW : The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King
Tumblr media
Nine-year-old Trisha McFarland strays from the path while she and her recently divorced mother and brother take a hike along a branch of the Appalachian Trail. Lost for days, wandering farther and farther astray, Trisha has only her portable radio for comfort. A huge fan of Tom Gordon, a Boston Red Sox relief pitcher, she listens to baseball games and fantasizes that her hero will save her. Nature isn't her only adversary, though - something dangerous may be tracking Trisha through the dark woods.
This book is horrifying on whole another level. Think about any kid who is only 9 years old & gets lost in the woods, not just any woods but woods so deep that if anyone got lost in them then that person won't come back. There is also the supernatural aspect which is classic Stephen King thing, it makes the story more disturbing and spooky.
Tumblr media
The reference to "The God of The Lost" is terrifying. As the entity follows the girl everywhere in the story which makes it more terrifying.
The God Of the Lost is an entity with no particular shape or form. It's just a wasp faced figure, one time it was described as an Black hooded entity and the other time it was a bear.
Trisha's biggest strength was her Walkman in which she used to hear all about the baseball game. As she is a big Red Sox fan, especially Tom Gordon's. So many times she hallucinates him talking to her. It makes the reader think that she is going crazy, in reality it's the way she deals with her situation.

Quoth the Author: Our Next Book
Hello, everyone! I know I haven’t been here very much lately.  Well, in an effort to change that, I wanted to talk about a stream I’ve been running on Twitch lately, called Quoth The Author.  I run it on Sundays at 5 PM EST, and it’s sort of a book club.
For the longest time, I’ve wanted to get back to reading books, but it was always so hard to find the time and motivation.  In talking to some friends, I found out that we were in a very similar place in regards to that.  And if there are some of us like this there are actually bound to be a lot of us.
In Quoth the Author, I let the audience know about a book we’ll be starting in advance so that you can procure your own copy, if you’d like.  But it isn’t necessary as, during the stream, I will read a section of the story aloud.  From there, the goal is to discuss, together, about what we’ve read.
If this interests you, please stop in, using the link above! And if you’d like to catch up on the progress of our current book (The Midnight Library by Matt Haig), you can check out my youtube channel, where all previous episodes are posted.
But that’s not exactly what this post is about.  This post is about enlisting your help to pick the next book that we’ll cover! Below the cut, you’ll find the covers and blurbs of the five books we’re considering moving on to.  Please check them out and let me know in the replies (or the poll on facebook or twitter, depending on where you guys are coming from) which sounds the most intriguing to you.
The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King:
Tumblr media
“Nine-year-old Trisha McFarland strays from the path while she and her recently divorced mother and brother take a hike along a branch of the Appalachian Trail. Lost for days, wandering farther and farther astray, Trisha has only her portable radio for comfort. A huge fan of Tom Gordon, a Boston Red Sox relief pitcher, she listens to baseball games and fantasizes that her hero will save her. Nature isn't her only adversary, though - something dangerous may be tracking Trisha through the dark woods.”
Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones:
Tumblr media
“Sophie has the great misfortune of being the eldest of three daughters, destined to fail miserably should she ever leave home to seek her fate. But when she unwittingly attracts the ire of the Witch of the Waste, Sophie finds herself under a horrid spell that transforms her into an old lady. Her only chance at breaking it lies in the ever-moving castle in the hills: the Wizard Howl's castle. To untangle the enchantment, Sophie must handle the heartless Howl, strike a bargain with a fire demon, and meet the Witch of the Waste head-on. Along the way, she discovers that there's far more to Howl—and herself—than first meets the eye.”
Lightning by Dean Koontz:
Tumblr media
“A storm struck on the night Laura Shane was born, and there was a strangeness about the weather that people would remember for years. But even more mysterious was the blond-haired stranger who appeared out of nowhere – the man who saved Laura from a fatal delivery. Years later – another bolt of lightning – and the stranger returned, again to save Laura from tragedy. Was he the guardian angel he seemed? The devil in disguise? Or the master of a haunting destiny beyond time and space?”
Skyward by Brandon Sanderson:
Tumblr media
“Defeated, crushed, and driven almost to extinction, the remnants of the human race are trapped on a planet that is constantly attacked by mysterious alien starfighters. Spensa, a teenage girl living among them, longs to be a pilot. When she discovers the wreckage of an ancient ship, she realizes this dream might be possible—assuming she can repair the ship, navigate flight school, and (perhaps most importantly) persuade the strange machine to help her. Because this ship, uniquely, appears to have a soul.”
The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman:
Tumblr media
“Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a perfectly normal boy. Well, he would be perfectly normal if he didn't live in a graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor the world of the dead.
There are dangers and adventures for Bod in the graveyard: the strange and terrible menace of the Sleer; a gravestone entrance to a desert that leads to the city of ghouls; friendship with a witch, and so much more.
But it is in the land of the living that real danger lurks, for it is there that the man Jack lives and he has already killed Bod's family.”
Please make your selections, friends! I’m excited to be heading off on another literary journey with you!

saint patricks day and the last time i'll drive back to school (i think so but i guess i could drive home before i graduate for something random)
this morning we went to church - all of us (my parents and david, samantha doesnt come with us because she has her own family now)
ben was there, we met his girlfriend and i saw him cry during the closing prayer, about how God is the someone who loves you no matter what you do. it's good when God is the thing that makes grown men cry.
the whole sermon was about love - agape love, sacrificial love. the love we can only give because we have received it.
dad made eggs and sausage. there was orange juice.
i packed my bags and i ate
there's supposed to be a baby goat born soon. david is taking a teaching certification exam tomorrow, he needs an 80.
i packed my car before i went to say goodbye. we hugged. everyone told me they loved me and then they told me to be safe.
"i love you" "be safe" "i love you too" "i will" from my mom and dad and aunt trisha, david gave me a very long hug, we laughed but he didn't walk me out.
i stopped by aunt trisha's house to say bye, my mom walked over to make sure she was the last person i hugged before i left.
i didn't fill up my tank before i got on the interstate.
i stopped at a love's before i got out of TX - 2 hours into the drive
a guy named donovan worked at the subway. he was working a double. he was tired and they were out of the bread i wanted. he asked me how my morning was going at 3:30pm donovan was very nice. "have a blessed day" he said. im sure none of this matters but i might want to remember. i stopped for gas one more time and stopped at the alabama rest stop to pee.
i ate a footlong and a Ton of salt and vinegar chips.
i watched gilmore girls almost the whole way - rory graduated college
and then i remembered about 9 hours into my 9 hour drive that this was my last one - 56 miles from tuscaloosa i was making horrible time
but i cried because i thought i had missed it. this whole drive i forgot to Care that it was my last drive back to school. i turned off gilmore girls - i shouldn't watch netflix when i drive anyway, but i did wear my seatbelt today.
i cried and i called my mom and i told her to tell my dad thank you for spring break and i told her i loved her and that i appreciate them.
"i love you, we all love you you know that right?" i do
"i just want to make sure i get to do everything i want, i only get to do this one time"
"there were ups and downs but that's life you just have to hope there are more ups" i do
i cried and i texted bri and cass and lindsay that i forgot that it was my last drive to school and i had forgotten to notice.
lindsay called me poetic and bri told me to come back home so i could do it again.
i tried to thank God for all of it and i cried again (im doing that right now)
somewhere in there i remembered that trevor broke up with me and i didn't cry about that.
i listened to wide open spaces too early, right as i went under the bridge onto mcfarland.
i thought i saw eli's car - i didnt. i thought about driving to redpoint just to look at his car or texting him that i was all nostalgic about college and that no matter how shitty i was glad he was a part of it - i didn't. (now that im home i dont know why i even thought about that)
i listened to wide open spaces again (2 more times)
grace was awake when i got home, clementine is sleeping in her own room now.
i paid attention in time i think

Trisha McFarland for A Year of Theme Posts
Trisha McFarland from The Girl who Loved Tom Gordon (1999) by Stephen King for May 27, 2017 May, 2017 Heroine Theme.
In The Girl who Loved Tom Gordon the main character Trisha McFarland is on a hike with her Mother and older brother and after getting sick of listening to them argue (Trisha’s Mother is divorced from her Father and most of the arguments steam from that) she breaks away from them to go pee without anyone seeing. When Trisha tries to find her way back to the trail she only gets herself further into the woods.
After her initial panic passes Trisha begins to look for a way back to the trail, but like her first attempt only gets herself further away. She does have a basic knowledge of what is safe and unsafe to eat and after going through her meager supplies (the egg, Twinkies, chips, and other snacks were supposed to be lunch) and manages to keep herself alive by rationing her food and getting lucky with finding more water after her bottle empties. The first time she finds water though it does make her violently sick until her body gets used to it.
Trisha’s luck with finding food and water doesn’t go as far as protecting her from her own fear or from getting her out of the woods quicker. She believes that a creature she calls the God of the Lost is following her through the forest and sees evidence of it being nearby in the form of a disemboweled deer and a torn apart fox.
After being lost in the woods for ten days Trisha emerges in New Hampshire (she started in Maine) and is found by both a hunter and the God of the Lost wearing the shape of a bear. Using her Walkman which was the only thing keeping Trisha tethered to the rest of the world through the Red Sox games she throws it at the bear hitting it in the nose before the hunter can shoot it. She then passes out.
After the hunter gets her to the hospital Trisha wakes up to find her Mother, Father, and older brother with her and attempts to tell them how she survived the woods, but falls asleep before she can get too far.
