hey guys. hey guys. see my vision. psychonauts x the guy who didnt like musicals au. its a non-psychic au. lili is paul, an heir to her dad's company, but is disillusioned with life, not having much ambition. analogously? analogically? whatever, truman is uhhhhhh paul's boss. forgot what his name was (the ages of the characters are changed around a bit - raz, lili and any camp kids are around 17-18, while the psychic 7 are younger than in canon - mostly around their late fifties) raz is emma, he works at the company's cafeteria and dreams of having a job there one day otto is professor hidgens. he's the company's chief engineer helmut and bob are sam and charlotte respectively, BUT!!! THEIR RELATIONSHIP ISNT UNHEALTHY OK!!! THEYRE JUST AS STUPIDLY IN LOVE AS IN CANON. also helmut isnt a cop, he works at the starlight theater. and bob works at truman's company with no problems since helmut didnt spend an extended period of time in a grulovian lake in this au. also, otto doesn't shoot helmut like professor hidgens shot sam in tgwdlm - he just knocks him out, cause yknow. thats his friend :( compton is bill!! he's wayyy closer with sam and dogen here. maybe like their parents died and he raised them with his spouse. whatever. sam is alice. First, a big thank you to everyone that’s supported Iron Circus’ Failure to Launch anthology and my contribution “The Second Extinction of the Pyrenean Ibex” by pledging, sharing & liking our posts, or just checking out the campaign! We’re halfway through the funding period, so I wanted to share some updates on tumblr.

The biggest news is that we made it to our goal and are now working on stretch goals and creator bonus payments! We’ve already gotten to our first stretch goal--upgrading the covers with a fancy effect--and are now onto the second: a PDF full of bonus comics for all backers. Can we reach them all?

Doctor Who: 'The Lazarus Experiment'Part 2:

Fast forward to night time (I always wondered what they did in the day before the event, did the Doctor just chill in Martha's flat while Martha had a well deserved shower and did the errands she had said she needed to do the night of 'Smith and Jones'?) and the Doctor and Martha are all dressed up and ready for the event, Martha commenting that the Doctor looks very James Bond - esque. (No girl don't fluff up his ego anymore even if it is true!)

Inside the party a party themed version of Martha's theme (where is this I need it!) and Martha is reunited with Tish her sister. Tish makes two comments to Martha which give an indicator of what kind of person she is. We established in the first episode that Martha is sort of a peacemaker within her family dynamic, brother stays out of it, Tish tends to add fuel to it, her parents seperation at the centre of it. She is also a hardworking medical student. But when Tish sees Martha, she says "two night outs in a row for you that's dangerously close to a social life" so Martha had clearly been forgoing her own social fun for her medical work. She's been purposely avoiding certain activities in order to became a trained doctor. This explains a lot right? The Doctor listens to this munching away on his 'nibbles' and Tish notices him in a very amusing way I should point out, the way she looks to him, then Martha then back to him, and Martha introduces him. In all my memories Tish was the younger sister, but she's actually Martha elder sister.

When Tish says "is he with you," I laughed a bit because it occured to me that Tish just thought this random man was just standing there, eating and listening to their conversation like a weirdo. And we have already established that Martha doesn't have much of a social life, so Martha bringing in this new guy raises eyebrows, "but he's not on the list how did he get in?" and Martha says a little shyly that he is her plus one. The Doctor then quickly changes the subject (probably because the psychic paper is in his brown coat which he is not wearing) and we learn that Tish is now head of Lazarus' PR department, something that shocks Martha. Remember what I said about The Master? The Doctor then technobables which is so cute because dude. She said she's Head of the PR department and organised the party, not that she was a scientist. "He's a science geek I should have known," also gives us another indicator into Martha - Martha likes 'science geeks' apparently "I should have known" so the Doctor is Martha's type.

Martha looks incredulously towards the leaving Leitica, (siblings will get so straight to the point) clearly finding it funny and a bit rude and the Doctor asks what a science geek is and Martha gives a rather diplomatic answer to spare his feelings from Tish' mild insult which is sweet.

Enter Francine mid conversation with Martha's younger brother Leo, complaining about Clive. Martha's has a very emotional reaction to seeing her, the way she says "Mum", the hug and the reintroduction of Martha's theme. Martha already knew she was coming but still reacted this way. All the danger Martha had previously faced with the Doctor appear now, the true impact of all she had done and experienced. Because although it's wonderful, it is also scary as hell.

I would argue this reaction is the reason Francine becomes so instantly suspicious of the Doctor. Francine had only seen Martha the previous night, but Martha reacted like she hadn't seen her in a while (which she hadn't). It also shows how close the two are, as she does not have this reaction with either sibling. I would argue that Martha appears to be the model child for Francine. Leo is only 21 but we see he already has small child. There's a partner but not no mention of a marriage. We know these things are not tantamount to being a great person, but we can infer that having a family so young all before his 21st birthday may have not been what Francine had planned for her son. Leticia also seems to have superficial tendencies with her propensity to gossip and high achievers. Francine's own marriage has failed. So it's really Martha who is doing the best, buckling down into training to become a Doctor. So it's not really surprising that the moment Martha starts to behave strangely, and a strange man she has never seen before enters the picture, the Kill Bill music starts playing.

Francine looks to her right (at the Doctor) and says "you disappeared last night." Martha replies that she simply went home, Francine looks over again "on your own?" And Martha introduces the Doctor again. Intriguingly, when Martha says that this is the Doctor, Francine seems to be a bit more approving, her demeanor changes, asking "Doctor what?" She wants her daughter to be a doctor, naturally she would be impressed by someone who already was one. But when Martha says it's "just" the Doctor and that they had apparently been working together Francine is suspicious again, because of course, this is the first time she has heard of it.

The Doctor, like Martha, lies to try and smooth over the obvious discrepancies in the story, his lie however opens up a can of worms after he tells her that Martha has told him all about her, and when Francine questions him, he states the obvious, looks to Martha for help (which she does not give and looks just as embarassed as he does). He then wades into dangerous waters after he tries to laugh it off by declaring that he doesn't know much because:

The innuendo is very funny but it hearkens back to my earlier point about the Doctor knowing little about Martha and her world, and the suggestive nature within Martha's season. Even John Smith later asks Martha angrily later in the season why is does the Doctor have her around, "what do you do for him?" I'm not sure if I'm articulating this very well, but hopefully you get what I mean.

Anyway, Dr Lazarus's experiment goes haywire and the Doctor pulls the plug and Martha opens the chamber to reveal a shiny new Richard Lazarus. The Doctor and Martha both point out just how unfathomable and dangerous the experiment was to a unfased Lazarus, they're both on the same level, both of their protestations mirror each other. None of them entertain the idea that what Dr Lazarus has done is a good thing. They then decide to do their own tests, helped by Martha cleverly gaining a DNA sample from Richard, an idea no doubt inspired by the Doctor's kiss in the first episode. So brilliant is this, the Doctor comments the same phrase he normally uses for Martha "Martha Jones, you are a star."

Martha verbiage also shows her brilliance later, commenting that after they both see the alterations on Lazarus' DNA that he has 'changed his own molecular patterns'. The Doctor technobables but it's interesting just how simairly they speak here, and Martha further reiterates how the DNA is still mutating.

Who wants to hear about a book that gave me psychic damage?

In Remi K. England’s 2022 YA novel The One True Me and You, worlds collide when a teen beauty pageant and a fan convention book the same hotel. Our main characters are Kay, a fanfic writer tentatively trying out they/them pronouns in the supportive, generally queer space among their fandom friends; and Teagan, a pageant contestant gunning for a much-needed scholarship and keeping her geeky tendencies and her lesbian identity firmly under wraps. The two meet when Teagan sneaks into a con event, and sparks fly. etc etc. It’s a rom com.

The fan convention is for a fictional story-within-a-story called The Great Game, a modern adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes canon. Kay narrates that it’s one of many, but it’s the best one out there: better than Elementary, and certainly better than the BBC one. Except, of course, it becomes fairly obvious that The Great Game is a fictionalised stand-in for the BBC’s Sherlock, and Kay’s fandom experience a stand-in for a very particular strain of Tumblr culture surrounding the series. Let me tell you seeing “JohnLock” shipping terminology on the page of a published book in the year of our lord 2022 made me a little dizzy.

The whole thing is so... SURREAL. Much of the novel’s depiction of fan practice feels like it harkens back to a just-bygone era, making it feel oddly detached from the flow of time. The vision of Scroll—a fictional blogging platform clearly meant as a stand-in for Tumblr—as a creative, queer-friendly fangirl paradise where everyone gushes about their ships and learns about social justice issues, feels deeply anchored in the culture and perception of the site from circa 2012 – 2016. 

Even the vision of “geeks” as social outcasts rather than, well, pretty mainstream, feels older too. Catchphrases like “witness me” and “BAMF” and “for the win” are pulled from an Internet lexicon of at least six or seven years ago and placed in the mouths of fictional teenagers ostensibly living in the present.

Even little details, like the characters brewing ship-themed tea blends, wearing vintage-style dresses printed with fandom references, talking about a bad episode as The One That Shall Not Be Named, someone “squee”ing at one point, even the construction of usernames… as someone who’s been on Tumblr for many years, watching Big Fandoms like Sherlock from the sidelines, it feels familiar, churning up memories from a dashboard of days gone by. 

Teagan, at one point, references a pageant from 2019, meaning the plot takes place at least a year after that. And yet, how can it, if it presents such a pre-DashCon image of online fan antics?

I almost wonder if this uncanny sensation could have been offset by making the novel a period piece, explicitly setting it in 2013 or 2014 and turning its nostalgic undertones into overtones: committing to creating a fictive time capsule of Tumblr and SuperWhoLock’s halcyon days. I wonder, too, if this manuscript was written closer to that heyday, and is (as can happen with the weird loops and timelines of a publishing career) only hitting shelves now—arriving on the scene when what was once a contemporary story now feels rather dated.

I don’t know that, though I do know from the acknowledgements that England intended The One True Me and You to be a cathartic, fun, wish-fulfillment story representing the queer fan experience they feel they missed out on in the ‘90s and early ‘00s. And as an outlet for that, I think the novel is wonderful, even if it’s rocketed me, personally, deeply into the uncanny valley. 

I wonder how it feels to read this as someone who was much deeper ingrained in Sherlock Tumblr? I wonder what the hell it feels like to read this as a modern teenager—the book’s intended audience!!

Years out from Sherlock’s pop cultural relevance, when its fandom has faded from the dashboard-dominance it once had, and when public perception of the series has generally soured and many people’s favourite piece of Sherlock-related media is ‘Sherlock is Garbage and Here’s Why’… can the wholesome and squeeful depiction of Sherlock-ish fandom in this book possibly resonate with any young people? I know marketing demographics aren’t always the best insight into a story’s inner workings, but I have to ask: who IS this for?

It’s not a bad book, and I don’t want this to be taken as a bad review of it. Sure, I found it to be weaker than England’s sci-fi novels: the prose is sometimes plain and leans on telling rather than showing in places, and it wraps up maybe too swiftly given the emotional weight of what happens in the climax. There’s also something to be said for how it’s vision of fandom as a queer paradise of acceptance where everyone is friends is... maybe a little overly-rosy. But if you’re in the mood for a short, cute, fluffy little queer romance between a pair of horny but endearing-enough teens, it will do the job. It will also rocket you back to a hyper-specific moment in fandom history with force that may or may not leave you with a neck injury.

25. Favourite rare pair?

Simon Blackquill and Maya Fey!!! Not a very popular ship considering that they never met in canon. But they have a lot of potential! They're the same age (which is kinda crazy to think about), they're both huge geeks, and they have a cute emo guy / bubbly girl dynamic (but not like they usually do with having the emo guy be toxic. Simon is a good boy). The thing is, a lot of people are diehard Franmaya shippers and some ppl would never accept Maya not being a lesbian, which seems a bit unfair since it's not canon anyway. I personally felt like Simon and Maya are both bi as hell. Oh well

26. What character do you think is underrated?

Hmmm well I typically like most characters. But one that definitely comes to mind is Raymond Shields from aai2. I love his goofy personality and general friendliness. Seen a lot of ppl hate him for supposedly being weird to younger girls like Kay, but aai2 was a fan translation so we don't even know how true that is. He also doesn't get enough credit for staying strong when Gregory Edgeworth died. He was only 19!!!! and he took over his law firm!!! he deserves more credit, he's very sweet. plus I love his design.
