i know its probably more rich american culture than rich japanese culture, but i think seto should give transfem mokuba a fucking insane and huge sweet 16 party
like maybe its not long after she comes out and he wants to make her feel special and give her some gender euphoria (with a side of a big old fuck you to the media) so he just goes all out, spending thousands on whatever dresses she wants, a whole crown to top her look off, makes it a private concert with her favorite bands/singers, holograms and light shows everywhere because seto kaiba would not be caught dead planning a party without them, and he runs himself ragged trying to make it as perfect as possible because he loves her and would do anything for her
(honestly she'd be fine with just a day out at the fair or something, but she wont complain about getting a sick ass party and private concert)

hot DAMN the contrast of the oracle telling percy he’ll be betrayed by someone close to him and the show cutting to him asking grover, the only friend he ever made before coming to camp, to go on the most dangerous mission of his life to go rescue his mother though.

this is mainly me rambling so i apologize in advance, but in general, i'm loving the pjo show and i feel like with each episode it's gotten stronger so yay ! but i do agree with the common consensus that so much of the action feels watered down ??? and besides it most likely being a symptom of disney (🙄), i think this also has to do with the slightly quicker pace - like either the episodes should be a bit longer or extended to 10 instead of 8 going forward idk
like i love when we just focus on character moments, and the added interactions we've been getting are great (annabeth with mrs. dodds, the trio bonding/bickering, etc) but the lack of REAL action is starting to stick out, and i know this is meant for children, but so were the books !! stop sanitizing things - percy talks about how life as a halfblood is scary and grim, so show us !!! when scenes are rushed we don't get to fully sit with the fear and tension that the characters must be experiencing, as well as the pretty high stakes of it all, which effects the audience's connection to the story/characters. just let us be truly afraid for them !! and while i don't have much of an issue with how the timeline of events in the novel has changed in some spots, i think it adds to this, and hopefully they figure it out down the line bc i think the maj of the problems can be solved by just looking at the pacing !

this miiiight be premature, but i feel like we are entering a new and worse age for walt disney animation studios, similar to the early 2000s when they began efforts to smother their traditionally animated movies in favor of their new cg movies. that era from 2000-2010 had a few really good movies, including my personal favorite lilo and stitch, but also contained the lows of dinosaur, home on the range, chicken little, and bolt. it was also the time of churning out unnecessary sequels via their television animation studio.
except now the unnecessary sequels are an endless parade of planned remakes, which i guess are making enough money for them to keep doing them?? and the giant corporate overlord disney (not to be confused with the animation studio itself) is letting marketing and execs dictate both what wdas makes as well as pixar’s offerings. that rough patch in the aughts was also reflected in the rest of the industry at the time—everyone was racing to get a handle on how to make new pipelines for cg and the stories told definitely suffered for it. but now, those other studios are turning out new and better and groundbreaking animated films that leave disney in the dust in so many ways.
i guess the question is—will more disney movies underperform like wish? and if so, will that loss be enough for them to trust their artists over those in marketing? or will they continue down the path of profit over everything and decide animation isn’t worth it?
in so many ways, every area of our media landscape feels like it’s cannibalizing itself as companies buy each other up and destroy whole studios, but disney above all has become an ouroboros—constantly feeding off of its past successes, all the while stripping any deeper meaning or resonance from those stories to be left with the husk that is the Marketable Intellectual Property. “here’s Nostalgia for you, served up on a silver (enameled) platter, please don’t try to remember why you actually liked this movie originally, just buy the doll or the tshirt or the theme park ticket with this character’s face slapped on it. it’s all we know how to do now.”

I may have occasionally griped (with the assistance and encouragement of @thisbluespirit ) about The Saint during my long rewatch, but I think this letter - from an October '62 copy of TV Times - may lay claim to being the earliest ever complaint about the series; the show had begun airing just a week earlier

Gonna write briefly about “The Rehearsal” on my succ blog bc why not. But I think it truly is brilliant, in hindsight of the finale, that the show turned out to actually be an effective criticism of itself, of reality tv as a genre (even and maybe especially the shows that are framed as being helpful for their participants), the use of child actors, and even, to a certain extent, Nathan Fielder’s own brand of comedy. All of that is 100% intentional - they could’ve shown anything they wanted and deliberately showed things that would make us deeply uncomfortable for ethical reasons, and deliberately highlighted the ways in which participants may have felt pressured into participating and how the presence of cameras impacts behaviour.
I’ve already seen the claim that the finale’s big twist is that it’s a “scripted narrative” and I don’t think that’s true at all. It’s pretty clear that Nathan and the team had an idea of where they wanted the show to go, but all the people they featured were real people. They didn’t script so much as… well, manipulate what happened by introducing certain elements, as all reality shows do. While they might have had a general sense of where they wanted the show’s “arc” to go, they were reliant on the participants behaving in certain ways or raising certain issues to dictate just how they went about achieving that arc. The brilliance here is making it fairly obvious to the audience what they’re doing, whereas most reality shows will try to hide it.
(And this premise is built into the pitch! We all expected to get a show about Nathan running these little rehearsals, and that idea is built on the premise that human behaviour is predictable and manipulable, if you control enough variables. And then we watched this exact premise play out entirely differently - and in a way that was much darker - from how we expected.)
There are so many more things to unpack about the show, obviously, but personally I just keep coming back to the fact that they made a reality tv show to say “hey, maybe even ‘helpful’ reality tv is somewhat unethical because these people are being helped for our own voyeuristic benefit, and those motivations will determine how producers approach the participants and the arcs they deliberately try to set up, even if we don’t see that on our screens.” It’s a bold move but I think they pulled it off well
