These books made me laugh so much: the concept of the bromance book club, the group dynamics, their relationships.

Even though they made me laugh, the stories themselves were just ok. I wish they weren’t so repetitive, or that sometimes the men weren’t the ones in the wrong at the end, because in my opinion sometimes it was the women’s fault.

My favourite book was the last one, even though I was hyped for the Russian’s story, but it was a big let down for me.

Elias' Bookshelf Thoughts No. 13: The Bromance Book Club #1 & #2

The title caught my attention first, because it's just so damn catchy. And truth be told, when people talk about book readers, they rarely refer to men. Like, men don't read books or something. Like men who read books are such an abnormality, we're like unicorns. So yes, the title caught my eye because its reference to both men and books.

Flipped the book over, and the synopsis got me immediately. It was an easy decision to pick up the first book. No regrets; I loved it so much I got the second and third book. Didn't pick up the fourth one yet (and apparently there's a Christmas novella I can't find) so that would be a future buy.

** SPOILERS AHEAD **

So, the premise of the first book is simple. Gavin, a famous football player (and super hot, my imagination ran wild) is having a problem with his marriage to Thea. His friends, fellow (hot) football players came to help. Simple, but then it got interesting. The other guys gave him advise based on a romance novel the group is currently reading. (just imagine, super hot straight football guys, reading romance novels, ones which they could have been on the cover, which they consider life guides to understand women better. I guess in a fictional world, that's plausible. I personally never thought of those books that way, but now I'm super curious about them. I may just pick up one some time eheh). He didn't buy that at first, but eventually their marriage troubles were resolved. Thea (i think) gave them the nickname the Bromance Book Club.

That element, the bros reading romance, is definitely a novelty I really liked in this series. It's fresh and unique, I think, since I haven't come across a similar concept in the books I've read (either that or I haven't read that many books yet). I was instantly bought over by the concept, and throughout the book, Gavin too reads the book-within-the-book to get ideas on how to fix his marriage. Along the way, hilarity ensues with their attempt to hide the fact that the guys are reading such novels (or reading in general, I wasn't sure, but it definitely feeds to the stereotype that hot athletic men don't read. Although I don't know any hot athletic men to ask them if they read at all. I don't have many guy friends IRL *sad*) The story is a fun ride, and the few sex scenes are quite hot. Also, thanks to Thea for the really good description of Gavin's sexy body, we love that.

The novelty (heh) of the guys reading got me super interested in the rest of the books in the series, so I picked up book numbers 2 and 3. The second book is Undercover Bromance, and third is Crazy Stupid Bromance.

I've recently finished reading book 2, Undercover Bromance, so let's continue talking about that.

While book 1 focuses on the book club newbie, Gavin, this second book (and it seems the third book as well) shifts the focus on Braden Mack, the only single guy in the book club. A hotshot bar/restaurant owner who always knows how to charm the girls (also the way he's written, he sounds really hot, damn). The story's main plot shifts from the guys to a side character from book 1, Thea's sister Liv. She works at a restaurant, then got fired after uncovering a dirty little secret of the restaurant's owner, then goes on a mission to expose her former boss. Her mission eventually leads her to Mack. There's drama along the way, with Liv's efforts to fall into the trap of Braden Mack's charm.

This book also features the same running gag of the Russian guy, named Vlad (very ... stereotypical?? I don't personally know any Russian so I don't know if it's a super common name) having gastrointestinal problems, with a hilariously-written fart scene (not unexpected, but still hilarious).

The thing about book 2 is that it lacks that unique novelty that's heavily featured in book 1. There's little to no reference to the book, even with the first scene in the book featuring the guys going to a bookstore and Mack picking out a book titled The Protector (foreshadowing his relationship with Liv). The story then prods casually but steadily and switched between Liv and Mack's plotting, Liv's life struggles, Mack's internal conflicts, and both of them resisting each others' charms and not acknowledging the sexual energy forming between them (one they eventually but not surprisingly succumbed to, although I don't blame her. I feel his sexual energy radiating from the pages; either that or I have a very good imagination I never knew I had. Also, they kiss a lot of times though). There was some mention of the book Mack's reading, but we don't get the excerpt-style info like we did with Gavin and his reading of Courting the Countess. It's not a bad thing, but I was expecting something similar. It doesn't devalue the story, though, but that's probably because I was invested with the series and the guys already.

The plot moves along the similar lines as the first one but thematically different, so it's nothing unexpected or particularly surprising. A good read, nonetheless.

Stars: 3.5 Recommended: Yes, but you have to read the first one before going into this or some things don't make much sense without context from book 1.

I'm on ep. 10 rn, and unless what he said to haeryung was actually about gicheol, I just don't think junmo ever cared for gicheol as friend. None of his actions or monologues indicate it.

On the way he falls in love with a local park ranger and contends with his own classism and escapist tendencies. Everyone seemed to perfectly suit their roles and GMMTV made the most out of its stable. Combined with excellent production (and post production) values, 1000 Stars is without question GMMTV’s most mature, charming, and smart BL series. I think it should go down as one of the top BLs of all time. I feel safe recommending this one to friends and non BL watchers. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

HIStory 3: Trapped Taiwan 2019 Viki (cop) - Basically the definition of enemies to lovers from Lin Pei Yu. This is a cop + the mafia man he is chasing but WAIT, they fall in love. Added bonus side couple: assassin and nerd cop ALSO falling in love. It’s great. All the leads are stellar. Its high heat, fun action, and a bit of a mystery drama but pretty about all of it. My only warning is that the main couple doesn’t entirely end up together, it’s implied, but… amorphous ending. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Your Name Engraved Herein Taiwan 2020 Netflix? (army, recent history) - This movie is fantastic but it is also seriously depressing, it’s a self acceptance journey, but if you wanna wallow in high quality acting and serious gay drama, this’ll do it. MIXED REC, NOT FOR SPECIFICALLY BL FANS

S.C.I. AKA SCI Mysteries China/Hong Kong 2018 YouTube? (censored bromance, cops) - This is a police procedural with a censored main couple of police investigators who live together basically as husbands, it’s just not talked about. This is one of the first BLs I ever saw (I found their relationship very confusing). RECOMMENDED

Guardian China 2018 grey (censored bromance, cop) - Episodic urban fantasy meets police procedural, one of the most epic long term pinings in the history of long term pinings. RECOMMENDED

Light Taiwan 2021 Gaga (cop) - Ironically titled movie about a street hustler (incest, rape, abuse survivor - all depicted on screen) who falls in (and in love with) an undercover cop. TRIGGERS

A First Love Story Korea 2021 YouTube & Gaga (military service) - Strongberry are true masters of their craft and yet A First Love Story is still one of the best things they have ever produced. It’s the only microfilm ever to make one of my year end top ten list. It’s two episodes of about 8 minutes each that manage to perfectly portray the sweetest friends-to-lovers confession ever. It’s joyful, and gentle with its characters, and a little hot. How on earth do they manage to leave us yearning for more yet completely satisfied at the same time? It’s like the perfect amuse-bouche, that one finger food at that one cocktail party that you will never forget. You are a ridiculous human if you haven’t spent 16 minutes with these two boys. Go watch it now. Or go watch it again. It’s time VERY well spent. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

I watched soooo much tv at the end of last year and loved it! This post will be all of the shows I finished watching in November and December 2023.

Twinkling Watermelon - Oscar award winning CODA meets blockbuster fan favorite Back to the Future. I really enjoyed this time traveling musical romp with excellent romances and friendships and learning more about your family.

The Worst of Evil - A cop's life is upended when he goes undercover with a gang to take down their burgeoning drug trade. An interesting watch. I especially liked the unlikely bromance between Ji Chang Wook and Wi Ha Jun. But this was just heartbreaking. Was surviving even worth it?

Castaway Diva - After a pair of island teenagers try to escape their abusive homes, they are separated for 15 years when one of them ends up on a deserted island. When Mokha is rescued, she decides to pursue her long-delayed dream of being a singer and reunite with her childhood friend. This was touching, fun and occasionally harrowing. Love Park Eun Bin, Chae Jong Hyeop, & Cha Hakyeon!

Perfect Marriage Revenge - A passive beleaguered woman is given a one year reset to get revenge on the family who made her life hell by marrying the man of her sister's dreams. A fun makjang that shows you can find the love and support you deserve with family and in marriage.

Moon in the Day - When a ghost who has been following all the reincarnations of his ex-wife who killed him 1500 years ago becomes corporeal, he tries to discover the truth and break the curse that has bound them together. This is a tragic, bloody, ride or die, epic love story. I liked it. Faves Kim Young Dae and Pyo Ye Jin star.

The Great British Baking Show - This is my happy place.

Fixer Upper - I really enjoy the banter of Chip and Joanna and these beautiful house renovations inspire me. I had watched a few seasons when it originally aired but I was able to watch the whole thing through this time.

The worst of evil is so funny bc it's not well written like... at all but because it's "gritty" dark drama with stabbing they're like are like it's so good, MDL is truly the weirdest platform whenever smt is comedic or romantic people are crying it's not good and doesn't have a lot no matter the quality of the writing and when something is a thriller/crime show they're calling it a masterpiece bc a show is good only if caters to what is seen as male preferences and "serious" we've lost the plot

I agree with the bigger flavor of this--MDL ratings as a rule make 0 sense to me and there's a lot of non-romance/non-comedy dramas that I agree are really overrated, probably for the reasons you said. I've also noted that if men/bromance are centered, it will typically get higher (sometimes unearned) MDL ratings and dear lord I could write a novel on how MDL has a problem with women

That said...

I think Worst of Evil is awesome lol. I don't find it to be a poorly written drama for the most part. There's some gaps in logic (like dear God those undercover cops NEED TO MOVE THEIR FUCKING MINIVAN), but for a "gritty" drama it is surprisingly character driven (how many EDGEY COP SHOWS are going to give you something like the funeral hall scene, for example?). While dudes are at the center, the supporting female characters are written well and treated with respect. The drama is clearly a love letter to older Hong Kong crime thrillers, like Infernal Affairs, and it's also just a lot of fun

Welp I just finished The Worst of Evil & I gotta say, I'm disappointed.

First of all, we've seen way worse when it comes to crime dramas/movies so I feel like the title is misleading. Yeah ppl got hurt/murdered but there were so many situations where ppl should've been murdered, would've been murdered if it were real life, but they were allowed to walk away freely w/a beating & a "don't show your face again". Like if you're gonna take out a gang you gotta take out a gang. You can't purposely let ppl that you betrayed & whose friends & bosses you've killed just run away. Especially after they try to get revenge on you by teaming up with/turning your allies against you multiple times. Messy. Some situations where just plain ridiculous.

Second, the ending...what the hell when the hell-? Since when did Junmo form any type of bond w/Gi Cheol?? Like I understand it from Gi Cheol's pov, Junmo saved him so many times & put his life on the line. But the whole time Junmo was only focused on doing what needed to be done to end the investigation quickly. He manipulated multiple situations to accomplish this, even manipulated Gi Cheol. Not once did I see affection, empathy, or regret from J towards him. Then all of a sudden at the very end we get this flashback of them walkin about town looking at each other like they're best buds...what?? As if J truly enjoyed his time w/him being a criminal & wasn't immensely stressed & traumatized the whole time. Maybe it's just me but that was very forced & last minute. It was the wrong drama for that. (There were a couple stand out scenes that were filmed differently from the rest of the scenes & it felt like there were 2 different directors or as if this was someones directorial debut & they wanted to throw in all the cinematic tricks they knew to build their portfolio or something. Those moments were cool but they didn't match the rest of the show, it was very disjointed.)

Third, I understand the message they were delivering. Going undercover & forcing someone to live in that type of situation will change them. Junmo was mentally changed forever, but I don't like that it affected his marriage. Suddenly he doesn't love his wife anymore? After everything they put me thru they couldn't give me that?? I'm fine w/out romance but don't include it then screw me over in the end. That just really made me dislike the whole drama. Him leaving his wedding ring at Gi Cheol's grave just pissed me off lol. It was refreshing for a kdrama to have the female 'love interest' go that far & immerse herself into that role just to protect her husband. I could feel how much she loved him, I mean she voluntarily emotionally manipulated her 1st love to protect Junmo. Their relationship ended abruptly before it could even begin in a sad way but instead of her feeling sorry for him or conflicted over how his life turned out she really lured him in to betray him for her husband. For them to turn around & make Junmo leave her behind like that...

Anyway, there was way less bromance than ppl were making it seem🙄

With a title like that I expected to be on the edge of my seat every moment, every ep, to be shocked by plot twists or unexpected revelations or just completely disturbed by violence. That never happened. It was just mildly interesting. I understood why Junmo would want to let him go at the end since they didn't really need him as the other 3 ended up making the drug deal, & he wasn't a heinous person. The standoff in the living room was a bit thrilling but it ended the way it ended... Oh & don't get me started on that damn cop! Why couldn't they have him demoted & stationed at a remote police station until the investigation was over? Sorry to say I felt nothing when he died.
