So, there're some theories going around that Kanae once was a Black Rose duelist but due to Akio's ability to erase and alter memories she forgot about that. Some go even further speculating that this is another reason why Anthy despises her so much on top of being enraged that yet another person doesn't get at all that Akio is terrible. Another additional theory speculates that Kanae could've been in the first duel including female duelists.

Out of this I fabricate my pitch for a duelist-Kanae-story: Utena as a story is so brilliant because already in episode one the issue of "girls are as capable as guys!" is just a stepping stone in discussion how actually the emulation of a hierarchical power system will keep people miserable. But what if Kanae's story stopped at "girls can do it too!"?

What if the first female duelists had to overcome high hurdles to be respected as duelists. What if the promise to be respected was only given under the condition of participating in the duels? What if Kanae and her possible others duelists were hindered or had too much of a tunnelvision to realize all the implications of the reality behind the power of Dios?

Perhaps Kanae and Anthy had a blossoming friendship in which Kanae fantasized vividly about her gaining the power of Dios would mean that by the virtue of being a girl, Anthy would finally find safety in female support. Maybe Anthy silently, faintly hoped that yes maybe girls would be more gentle with each other. (Against all previous exclusion and bullying, maybe the reason why she's disdained is because of so much unwanted male attention?)

Meanwhile Akio seduces Kanae, and puts ideas in her mind: Once the duels are over and her deed done, she could be happy with him. At the same time, a little ambitious voice in Kanae is wondering, if she ever won, how much she could create with the power of Dios...

What if the girls would actually be played against each other because there can only be one person attaining the power of Dios. Maybe there even girls who look down upon Anthy because she's so passive, not getting out of her misery herself. All Anthy would need to do is to duel herself. Why isn't she doing it then?! Some female duelists turn against each other because they either see themselves as exceptional, not as weak ask the other duelists, surely not as weak as the Rosebride. Others have given up on trying to negociate, they're convinced their vision alone will benefit all other girls best.

But in the end, what they don't realize is that the power of Dios was never theirs. The end culminates in Kanae being almost drunk with joy to come out as final duelist, the Rosebride would finally be treated fairly, with the power of Dios she would install fairness in the social dynamic within Ohtori. But Akio takes her sword, Kanae in shock finds herself in the dress of the Rosebride. Kanae witnesses in horror Anthy's martyrdom, cries when Akio breaks her sword, and realizes way too late that freedom was never in the cards for neither her nor Anthy, nor for anyone else.

Reset.

Kanae's first day of highschool begins. Her mother and father introduce her to the new chairman. She's smitten. Has she seen that handsome face before? Girls are jealous of her but also admire Kanae for such a good match, going on dates with such a galant man. If only their parents would arrange such dream matches. A year later Kanae's parents announce that they plan to engage her Akio. Such a charming, good-looking, capable, a promising man should join the family, what a good match he would be to her good looks, education, and status. Akio is so dreamy, handsome, and gallant. But why is Kanae feeling nervous then? Marriage right after highschool, how young and beautiful she will look in that dress... She can't remember if she'd had any plans, well concrete plans after graduation... Does marriage mean she can still go to university? Would Akio restrict her to maybe travel a bit? And the she gets introduced to Akio's little sister, silent, closed-off, smiling, smiling, smiling, smiling, smiling, never looking at her, smiling. Kanae will marry after graduation, that is certain. That will be good, her friends, her family, everyone tells her how what a good catch she made.... Why is she not happy then? That constant doubt, maybe she should get counseling.

Touga is sitting on a pink rose. Butterfly wings spread backwards from his shoulders, vibrating slightly as he pushes aside layers of petals to dip his hands into the nectar at the base. It’s sweet and sticky, tingling strangely with power, and he gulps it down before moving on to the next rose with an effortless flitter of his white wings. After a while the sweetness makes him feel sick, but he still needs it, this energy. He deserves it. If he’s the one suffering, shouldn’t this power be his?

Suddenly the rose is cupped brown hands, holding him up to a face with deep green eyes. He freezes in terror, afraid she will touch his wings and brush the scales off, leaving him to die.

Instead she stands on tiptoe, very gently setting him on the lowest branch of an apple tree.

Utena, Anthy, and a conversation about love. Around 500 words.

“I loved him,” Utena says. She feels vulnerable admitting it, staring at the ceiling rather than at Anthy curled up at her side. “Not… not in the way he tried to convince me I did. But…” she sighs at the feeling of Anthy's fingers moving gently up and down her arm. “But I did love him.”

Anthy is quiet, and Utena can tell she’s waiting for her to say the next thing, the logical conclusion to this line of thought. It’s the hardest part to admit to herself, let alone to someone else. Let alone to Anthy.

She takes a breath. “Sometimes I feel like I still do.” Anthy exhales against her shoulder.

“Love is,” Anthy starts, then stops. Utena feels her shake her head. “It’s not… enough, on its own. I loved him too. I still do. I think I always will.”

Utena squeezes Anthy’s hand in the dark, and for a while they simply listen to each other breathe. “I’m not sure I even know what love is,” Utena says. “I definitely didn’t, growing up. But I wanted it, more than anything. He knew that. He offered it to me, and he knew I would do anything to keep it.”

“Family,” Anthy whispers, her mouth still pressed against Utena’s shoulder.

“Yeah. Family.”

They’re both quiet for a while, aware of the weight of the conversation. The entirety of what used to be their world, all contained in that single word.

“Do you think…” Utena starts to ask, but hesitates. She doesn’t want to say the words, and doesn't want to hear Anthy’s answer.

“What is it?”

She shakes her head. “Nevermind. It doesn’t matter.”

“Everything matters,” Anthy says simply, but in a tone that tells Utena that she doesn’t have to say if she doesn’t want to.

She sighs. “I just mean, it doesn't change anything. It doesn’t make what he did… better. But I just wonder,” and she has wondered for years now, “I wonder if he loved us too. If any of it was real.”

Anthy wraps an arm Utena’s middle and touches her scar lightly. “He did,” Anthy says, confidently enough that Utena doesn’t question it. “It was as real as anything was in that place. But like I said, love is… It’s not an inherent good.”

“No,” Utena mumbles. “And he hurt us in spite of it.”

Anthy catches Utena’s eye for the first time since the conversation started. “He hurt us because of it, Utena.”

“Oh,” Utena breathes, turning her eyes back to the ceiling. She lets that revelation settle in her chest, but doesn’t know how to feel about it. She was right that it doesn’t make any of it better. She’s not sure whether or not it makes it worse.

Is there a dream fanfiction project you've always wanted to tackle but haven't had the chance to yet?

Actually, uh, yeah, I do! I even have an esoteric title!

The dream project is called "a wonder and a terror", in reference to Keanu Reeve's answer for how it feels to grow old. I want to go back and revisit most of the worlds I used to visit in fanfic. That would include Final Fantasy 7, Sorcerer Hunters, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Hellsing, Slayers, Gensoumaden Saiyuki, Gundam Wing, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Trigun, Gargoyles, and Generation X--aaaaaaaaall stuff I once obsessed over.

The thing is, I was writing/reading fic for those works when I was a teenager. And most of these works also feature teenagers, or very young adults. In a lot of cases, these shows are literally about child soldiers, or extremely young/inexperienced adults being forced to take on The Good Of The World.

The theme I'd take on in all these fics will be threefold:

What happens to child soldiers when the war ends and they grow up?

What happens to folks who thought they'd die on the battlefield who live long enough to experience aging?

What happens to characters who became powerful/famous under one gender identity who try to transition?

In addition to flipping characters' genders or their cis status, I plan on doing a LOT related to characters having chronic disabilities, physical as well as mental. And there will be a lot of shipping, many of it for ships I never explicitly wrote for in the past. (Specifically, I'm very glad that Barret/Cloud's time has come 'round at last.)

Some fics are already released on my account. "Entering King" is where I introduce the idea of trans man!Sanzo, which ties into some of the stuff I wanted to do for the Gensoumaden Saiyuki fics. My Gen X work is going to take place in the same canon already established here. Not a lot has been completed yet, but I do hold out hope that I'll get there!

Wild Utena thoughts.

I kind of think that Anthy would only bottom in two kinds of situations: if she doesn’t trust her partner at all, or if she trusts them completely.

Because as we see she is so used to being objectfied, disregarded and abused that I think she just defaulted that every person just sees her as something to use for their own goals and abandon, and that extends to sex. So with someone she doesn’t know if she can trust or not, defaulting back to passivity is safe, comfortable. (I’m thinking here as an example outside of Akio her with Kozue on the car in the last duel against Miki)

But like, with someone she trusts I think there would be safety to experiment more and try to place herself in a more active role, take control of the exchange without fearing for herself or her partner, as we see with Utena in the movie.

And in this context I think bottoming would be kind of an ultimate sign of trust from her in a sexually active relationship, like, a “I trust you to not hurt me this time” kind of deal.

Summary: After Eternatus rips his heart out, Chairman Rose wakes up in the hospital with a Wishing Star in his healed-over chest. It's clear he won't find answers if he turns himself in, so he decides to take his leave and search on his own–but as a man on the run, he's forced to seek help from questionable characters who don't always have his best interests in mind.

i just. remembered again that i have a fembaru fic but also the premise is. Very Messed Up hah and also it was written before the canon genderbent au with its official genderbend names for everyone so its also outdated on top of that T^T i had like. Genderqueer subtext going on too. but i also wrote this fic like almost two years ago and havent touched it in forever so im unsure if i should go back to it…. o.o but i would love to finish it one day if only for my own satisfaction hah… i had a very detailed outline for ch 2 (its a twoshot) and several scenes written already anyway!! So a little different for this Weeb Wednesday because I am hoping to launch this before the next Weeb Wednesday, the day before that is rather fitting.

I have been working on this for the last few months and I am finally putting the finishing touches on it before I post the first part online. I present to you.

Duel 1: The Woe’s Bride

Once upon a time, many years ago, there was a little princess, and she was very mad, for her mother and father had died. Before the princess appeared a traveling prince, riding upon a grey horse. They had a regal bearing and a knowing smile. The prince wrapped the princess in a rose-scented embrace and saw the rage in her eyes. “Little one,” they said, “who bears up alone in such deep sorrow, never lose that strength or nobility, even when you grow up. I give you this to remember this day. We will meet again. This ring will lead you to me one day.” Perhaps the ring the prince gave her was an engagement ring. This was all well and good, but so impressed was she by them that the princess vowed to become a prince herself one day. But was that really such a good idea?

I will post the whole thing on the 31st. The idea came from asking what would happen if you took Wednesday and put her in Ohtori Academy and it grew from there.
