Since we are still stuck waiting for the baby’s arrival, we decided to spend some time in nature today – on town really is a beautiful place – we did our last pregnancy photoshoot, using our usual photographer due to Caleb’s special photographic needs. As always, she does an amazing job on our pictures.

Hopefully we won’t have to wait much longer to meet our little starfish.

With the few passings you had with the Nein, the one called Cadeuces seemed to take a liking to you. It was off putting to you initially. Did he pity you? Was it supposed to be condescending? You always inquired him whenever there was a visit.

It was amusing to you in it’s own way, the constant back and forth with your question and his answer.

“Why do you still come? Talking to me?”

And it was always the same sigh and bundled gift of tea on your bunk.

“At some point, Caleb trusted you. And he still does. Then and now, relationships are built on trust, so I’ll trust you as Valeb does.”

In the past, you would have sneered at such a gesture. But now, maybe there was something you hadn’t discovered in yourself yet.

Okay but here's the THING about shadowgast right??? (To me lol)

Like.. Caleb relates to and cares for Essek partially because he sees himself in him. And we Know caleb thinks of himself as a piece of shit.

But the Reason caleb thinks of himself as a piece of shit is because, as a teenager he was brainwashed into murdering his parents and Also many other people. Keywords being Teenager and Brainwashed. And he was able to be brainwashed because he cared so deeply about his country and the people in it.

Now, Essek is a piece of shit because he AS AN ADULT decided that he Didn't Care enough about another person to not commit treason.

!!! Like! They're very different people?? Like they're So Different. THEN there's the caveat of the Way in which Essek went about comitting treason, which was giving away vital scientific data to the very organisation that contributed to Caleb's abuse??

And Essek isn't responsible for what happened to Bren BUT if Caleb hadn't gone through what he did, his future with the nein would either be Very Different or nonexistent, WHICH MEANS that Essek wouldn't have had a change of heart to begin with BECAUSE CALEB WOULDN'T HAVE SEEN HIMSELF IN ESSEK AND PUSHED FOR HIS REDEMPTION LIKE

June 21

I somehow managed to get in more of a nap then I thought I would, when I woke up it was shortly before midnight. I had Caleb use his phone to check on Dakota, Lily and Lilith. They were all doing well, no sign of James. I took another bath with some help from Caleb, it was getting harder and harder for me to move without the fear of falling. I was feeling unsteady, so I had Caleb walk with me a bit before I sat down on my very purple ball for some exercises Annalise recommended to help with labor.

I finally couldn't take it anymore.

I screamed in agony from a contraction and ordered Caleb to help me change into something not only cooler but to help me get rid of my pants. After that I slowly and stubbornly made me way to our bed and leaned back carefully into the birthing pillows.

Caleb seemed worried as he lovingly held my hand, placing kisses on it. He was whispering something but I couldn't make it out. We had Annalise first check the baby's heartbeat, which was good and strong.  Then she finally told me news I wanted to hear, I was almost fully dilated.

I reared up, yanking off my headband in agitation during yet another contraction. "Get this baby out of me!"

Caleb placed his hands on my face and tried to console me though part of me wanted to cut off his favorite appendage at that moment.

The feeling passed when he lovingly kissed my forehead. "I have never loved you more than I love you right now. You are about to bring our child into the world. You are truly remarkable."

I cried out of pain and out of all the emotions and thoughts that were swirling around inside me like a hurricane. Annalise asked to check me again. My body was finally ready, mentally and emotionally I had been ready yesterday.

Caleb helped me onto my knees, we had decided he would be the one to help guide our child out as long as there were no complications. Annalise would be close by just in case and to instruct Caleb on what to do.

After what felt like hours of pushing and screaming on my part, it finally happened. We heard the first cry of our child, Annalise helped me sit back on the bed as I almost collapsed from exhaustion and emotion.

After nine months she finally arrived. Our little starfish, Este Evie Vatore. Named after both our mothers. I can't wait for all our loved one to meet her.

I wanna talk about the dancehall. Because I can.

The mental image of Astrid and Caleb dancing in this duel-like manner is a very interesting idea. It’s a callback to the conversation she and Caleb fist had earlier in the campaign: this toying with power and dominance in a way that brings up a bittersweet past. It’s endearing, but it’s also a warning. A reminder that whole Astrid doesn’t like getting her hands dirty, she could always take the upper hand. And Caleb could easily do the same. Not only that, but it’s a reminder of a hurt past that, while love existed, was fueled by competition.

Then he looks over at Jester, dancing ridiculously and being herself. Not using this time as a negotiation, but as a slight bit of relief and freedom while making sure Valeb is safe. It’s a reminder of the life he found; the path he chose and forged for himself. He wants to dance there with her. He wants to move past whatever dance with death he is doing. And I love the mental image of Caleb seeing what he chose for himself vs what was almost chosen for him
