Weekly Tag Game!

I've been MIA on vacation with the family, so I've missed a few of these. But I am now back in the land of ice and snow so figured I hop on this one quick! your favorite concert: This is tough, I've seen a lot of great shows! But many moons ago when my hubby and I were first dating Everlast came to a music fest in town. My hubby is a huge fan so we went together and it was a miserable day, pouring rain and cold, but we had SUCH a good time. Cause of the rain it was a pretty small but mighty crowd and Everlast was awesome. It is just such a good memory for me!

have you ever unfollowed someone over a fandom opinion? Nope. This is the only fandom I have ever really participated in and it's been lovely!

a ship you’ve abandoned: I was super into Belle and Shawn from Days of Our Lives back in the day. I read a bunch of fanfic, but never really interacted in the fandom. But once the original actors left the show and I grew out of high school they lost appeal to me.

on a scale of 1-10 how willing are you to share your ao3 history? haha. share with who? on tumblr? probably 10 - nothing would shock any of you. With a random person in my everyday life...probably zero. haha

do you have a fandom tattoo? (do you want one?) I am tattoo free and at this point in my life will mostly remain that way.

gone skiing? A ton! It's been a few years since being pregnant/having babies isn't conducive to skiing, but I adore it. It is my favourite winter activity!

Russell turned vegan in 1985, when she was 30 years old. She’d been advocating for animal rights since she was 24.

She died on June 19 2020, at 65, killed by a truck driver while participating in a pig vigil and opposing an ag gag bill. She had been fighting for 41 years.

The bill is still in effect, prohibiting people from “unauthorized interactions with farm animals on farms and during transport”. Why? Because animal rights activists going into farms and slaughterhouses, taking pictures and videos, exposes the cruel ways animals are mistreated to this day.

Activists breaking into these places is how we got footage for the documentaries Earthlings and Dominion. These movies are responsible for showing people the truth and turning them vegan.

"Regan Russell spent the final moments of her life providing comfort to pigs who had never experienced the touch of a kind hand. While her tragic death has brought upon deep sorrow in the Animal Save [Movement] community, we will honor her memory by vigorously confronting the cruelties she fought so hard to prevent by marching with Black Lives, protecting Indigenous rights, fighting for LGBTQ equality, and living a compassionate vegan life. The Ontario government can attempt to silence us with the passage of its Ag-Gag bill -Bill 156 - but we will never go away and we will never back down." - Joaquin Phoenix statement cited in People Magazine

On the day of her murder she was giving water to pigs on a truck, which paused briefly before driving into the slaughterhouse, at a facility where 10.000 pigs are slaughtered every day, showing them one small kindness, as she had done many times before.

Russell was standing in the crosswalk in front of the entrance of the slaughterhouse and was possibly crossing the road when she was run over by the transporter.

She had been fighting for other living beings until her death, had been fighting for decades, had been fighting for justice.

She was strong and compassionate and I hope we all can learn from her and continue her fight.

We all are living on one earth, we all are living beings, deserving of freedom.

Go vegan.

1. Chipotle order?

There's no Chipotle location where I live (the maritimes isn't really "with it" sadly. We only just got a Popeyes and a Sephora very recently). The closest Chipotle would be somewhere in Ontario, so about a 2 hour plane ride from where I am. The menu looks pretty good though, I'd try the chicken quesadilla with a side of red chili salsa!

2. Thoughts on veganism?

There's quite a few! Vegan food tastes pretty good if it's made by someone who knows how to cook or if it came from a good restaurant. Having friends or co-workers who are vegan can be a great way to encourage yourself to eat more veggies too if you struggle with it (I do). Lots of people turn to it because they don't like the thought of killing and eating animals, especially because there's a lot of workplace and animal welfare issues with factory farming. I get where they're coming from, but food solidarity is more productive in the grand scheme of things because in reality, veganism was only made possible relatively recently and in places where there's dependable/affordable food imports all year around (and there's issues with that too, farmers aren't treated very well, especially in the global south. Over worked, underpaid...). Canada is a pretty good example of this. If you go waaay way up north, fruits and veggies are insanely pricey, so what makes more sense? Buying a single box of strawberries for 25$ or hunting a seal or whale to feed tons of people for a good amount of time? My own family in remote Newfoundland lives by the ocean and about an hour away from the nearest grocery store, so it makes sense to catch your own seafood and have a moose for the family to last the winter.

The vegans I know in person are thankfully civil about it. They don't talk down on "carnists" (idk why vegans online use that as an insult sometimes because honestly it sounds both funny and cool at the same time), or insist on feeding vegan diets to cats. Thank goodness

So basically: food is food. Eat what makes the most sense for you and your family to eat and whatever that is, never stop practicing gratitude towards your farmers and butchers or family members who can hunt. We'd all be worse off without them

9. Do you have a skincare routine (and how many steps is it)?

It's very, VERY diligent. I used to have pretty bad acne and I was on accutane for about a year after university 6 years ago. It's great stuff, but it can be hard on your body. To this day, sunscreen is still the first thing I put on when I wake up (although skin cancer alone should be your reason to wear it everyday no matter what. Especially if you live somewhere where healthcare isn't timely or affordable). Right now I use these to keep breakouts at bay. My skin is the best it's been in years.

27. What’s your favorite or go-to outfit?

Right now, it's a bright pink and gold silk robe with a hood. I have good pictures of it from the designer here:

The designer repurposed the fabric from an old wedding dress, and it makes me feel all rosy and happy everytime I wear it. As if I was made part of an old love story

Although you know what, a friend of mine did tell me once that it reminded her of Homestuck. I don't know how I feel about that ☠

Don't Touch the Bonsai, Alarm Will Sound

This was to be my last night in Chicago... so the day was a bit bittersweet. We reflected on the past week with a little regret that we didn't get to as many things as we'd hoped to, but all in all it was a good time.

We hit Elephant & Vine for lunch, I got some sort of cauliflower wrap, it was so good. I wish we had more cauliflower options around here, alas I'm forced to make my own fun, haha.

We went over to the Botanical Gardens and walked around for a while looking at all the plants and birds and cute chipmunks. There were also several ancient bonsai trees that have been around for way longer than I have (or will be, haha).

Afterwards we drove around the suburbs for a while. I saw the Home Alone house though I failed to take a picture. Unfortunately we learned the Adventures in Babysitting house was actually in Ontario. :/ The amount of times we've been lied to by that movie...

We went across town to meet up with Bluey for dinner. This was my last opportunity to see them before leaving so I'm glad they could make it out. We ended up at Penelope's for vegan Mexican food, it was mad good. I'm still thinking about these asada fries, I need to try to make some of my own.

These tacos were bomb too.

Bluey dropped us off after at the Sears Tower so I could finally get up to the Skydeck... sadly though despite advertising hours until 10pm, we found when we got there that they'd stopped selling tickets at 8. So we left defeated and walked around downtown into the night. It wasn't a total loss, of course... I got to see some more of the city and the Funny Bunny's favorite buildings he affectionately refers to as the "Corn Cobs".

We hoofed it around for a long time that night... he theorized if we just didn't go to sleep it would never be tomorrow (can't argue with that logic). I knew I would miss Chicago, but hopefully I will make it back someday.

I was starting to feel bad for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off seemingly overwriting the timeline of the original books, but as I've been watching the show I've noticed elements that have been changed from the books and movie. Like Ramona delivering Netflix DVDs rather than stuff from Amazon (admittedly, this makes sense to the streaming platform), how Crash and the Boys weren't at the first show, and most glaringly of all Kim recounting Scott's version of events about how they got together. I looked into such changes, and people said that in Older Scott's memories he's not shown fighting NegaScott. There's an argument that because Scott never fought the manifestation of the stuff he didn't like about himself and repressed, ultimately coming to accept the NegaScott which in turn drives his final bit of character development, it starts making sense why Scott fell back into his old ways.

This wouldn't be the first time the franchise has done this. Scott doesn't accept the NegaScott in the game, just beats the crap out of him. No assimilation or anything while Scott's ending, despite the game being about how he needed to beat the Evil Exes to date Ramona, sees them breaking up while Scott has a harem with his three exes.

So, creating a timeline where Scott never had to fight the NegaScott because his version of him and Kim hooking up was actually accurate makes sense. He didn't have to repress that memory and create a fake one, which in turn would imply he was a bit better than his other incarnations despite still dating a high schooler. This really is an alternate universe to the books, movie and game, and those timelines are left intact. And this change still fits with the theme of the original series. People say it's about not selling out, I found it was more accepting yourself rather than trying to reinventing who you are. Matthew Patel started dressing like a pirate because pirates are "in," Lucas is implied to be different before he became a total dudebro, Todd fakes being vegan, Envy went from that slightly nerdy GF we all dreamed about having to… I dunno, Lady Gaga? And now we even have Gideon having reinvented himself from Gordon Goose from North Bay Ontario (which… yeah, I've been to North Bay and that tracks). Meanwhile, Scott was scum but because of his self-serving memory he thought he was a total nice guy while Ramona just kept running and reinventing herself whenever things got too serious. There's also Stephen coming out as gay. So taking out a key part of Scott's development and instead focusing on Ramona growing up in his stead, it's a nice flip of the script that keeps the spirit of the original.

Needs more Wallace though
