春望 ("Spring View") by 杜甫 (Du Fu) is my February poem for the 2024 dostoyevsky-official challenge by @dostoyevsky-official.

Yes, I recited it from memory. No, I cannot write all those characters from memory.

I wrote a translation of the poem below, inspired by Vickie Fang's. There are different interpretations for the third and fourth lines - "感时花溅泪，恨别鸟惊心" (such as the one in From Meter to Meaning). I believe this one makes more sense in relation to the previous lines (there is war and suffering going on, but nature is indifferent and spring flowers are blooming anyway).

春望 chūn wàng Spring View

国破山河在 guó pò shān hé zài The nation is broken, the mountains and rivers remain

城春草木深 chéng chūn cǎomù shēn Spring in the city, the vegetation grows deeply.

感时花溅泪 gǎn shí huā jiàn lèi Moved by the moment, I shed tears on the flowers

恨别鸟惊心 hèn bié niǎo jīng xīn Sorrowful for the separation, my heart is startled by birds.

烽火连三月 fēnghuǒ lián sān yuè The beacon fires have been burning for three months

家书抵万金 jiā shū dǐ wàn jīn A letter from home is worth ten thousand pieces of gold.

白头搔更短 bái tóu sāo gèng duǎn My white hair, scratched thinner,

浑欲不胜簪 hún yù bù shēng zān Can barely hold a hairpin anymore.

This poem was written by Du Fu in the late spring of 757 AD during the An Lushan Rebellion. An Lushan was a regional military commander in the northern part of the then Tang Dynasty, and he rebelled against the Tang Dynasty at the end of 755. In July of 756, An’s rebel forces captured Chang’an, the capital of the Tang Dynasty. The city was looted and burned by the rebel forces. Du Fu arranged for his wife to stay at the Lu Province, a place north of Chang’an, while Du Fu himself continued his journey north to Ling Wu to join the new emperor Su Zong. However, he was caught by the rebel forces during his journey north, and was taken back to Chang’an as a prisoner. It is said that Du Fu wrote this poem when staying in Chang’an as a prisoner of the rebel forces.

Eight years later, or, "I'm not getting older; I'm just getting bolder."

Hi divas,

It's been the better part of a decade since I first posted this list, and a lot has changed: for me, for Bravo, and not least for the various superestrellas herein. I'm forced to fess up to some clunker opinions (Stacey Forsey is not a better Housewife than Vicki Gunvalson; Teresa Giudice is [heartbreakingly, devastatingly] not actually in love with her brother), and a few overall sea changes in the way I conceptualize the show and Bravo in general.

First of all, I underestimated the delight of the Housewives blog/news cycle, which has only refined as an apparatus since the posting of this list. A key component in being a Bravolebrity is one's ability to titillate with delightfully brain-bending headlines (Teresa Giudice 'can’t relate' to Jen Shah’s prison sentencing: 'I would never do something like that.') and to shock and delight with one's antics, public snipes, absurd feuds, and assorted felonies. When I first compiled this list, it was after my first watch of each of series, and I didn't understand that a good chunk of the captivating material occurs offscreen, as a thrilling little adrenaline hit during an otherwise mundane day. If I had to make a list like this again, I'd take that into much more rigorous account.

But I wouldn't make a list like this again, because fundamentally... I really like all of these women now, at least as highly edited TV characters! Shock twist: they're all now tied in my heart! I see them all as rich and necessary players in the show's milieu, and I honestly think that my individual moral judgments of them are totally irrelevant—and, in fact, I think the show works best approached as non-judgmentally as possible. I respect that each viewer will have their own individual lines in the sand as to what is and isn't Too Far, informed by their own personalities and experiences, and I can't ask for carte blanche approval of these problematic women and their problematic ways. But for me, I have genuinely come to appreciate Kyle Richards and Jeana Keough and THE Mary Schmidt Amons, and of course I still love Phaedra and Tamra and Sheree and all of the other beautiful Botoxed gladiators who have taken to the Coliseum (and The Traitors season two) for our collective entertainment.

I think part of what's brought me to this conclusion is that in the current era of BravoCon and celebrity superfans and Peacock exclusives, the social media discourse has gotten increasingly tense, heated, and even abusive—between fans and other fans, certainly, but also between fans and the talent. People frequently direct really cruel messages to the Housewives and other Bravolebrities without thinking of the impacts of those sorts of messages, individually and en masse. I think a ranked list like this one, with its favourites at the tops and least favourites at the bottom, isn't a great format for communicating the nuance of these programs at their best, and for expressing my appreciation for these many strong, interesting, entertaining women who love vaginal rejuvenation and axe-throwing. Basically, I think we're too quick to judge, and I think I judged too quickly.

I still get really sweet messages from readers about this list (please forgive me if I haven't answered yours!), so I won't strip it from the web, even though I disown a lot of the opinions underpinning it. If you're reading this in 2024, or later, just know that I almost universally wish I were kinder and more thoughtful in my appraisals. And, hey, thanks again for reading.

Auguries (BatFam), Chapter 1: He doesn't jump when fingers entwine with his and a slight weight leans against his shoulder. She doesn't speak, just stands there beside him. A warm presence in the cold.

The Myth of the Bat Part 1 (Batman Mythos series) (Batman fandom) (WIP): Some day, on Gotham's darkest night, when smog and the earth blots out the moon, Vicki is going to strangle Roger with his own stupid necktie.

But You Could Hide Beside Me Maybe For A While (FMA): Opening his eyes Ed tilts his head to look at Ling, finding him looking back. There’s no goofy smile on Ling’s face and Ed takes in again how that makes him seem so much more stern than he is. Still Ed kind of likes this look on Ling better than the goofy grins. This is the real Ling after all and Ling trusts Ed enough to show it to him.

Still Breathing (Rewrite) (BatFam) (WIP): More than anything Dick wishes he could just erase every nasty thing he ever said to the kid and start over from the very beginning. So that right now he could feel like he’d have the right to tell the kid he looks like shit when he wakes up and know that he and Jason could laugh about it. As it stands he knows that it’d just sound like another unfair criticism in a long long line of them.

Terminal Pun Disease (BatFam): Jason grimaces. “If you mean the latest additions to my ‘that’s gonna hurt like a bitch tomorrow’ list, they’ll mend. The case of compulsive pun disease I contracted from a certain someone way back when though, I’m afraid that’s terminal. One day it will absolutely be the death of me.”

We’ll Be Carrying Each Other (BatFam) (WIP): Despite all their arguments and everything Drake represents, Damian does not actually want him dead anymore. He blames Grayson for this. It certainly has nothing to do with Drake's winning personality.

Literal Drake (BatFam): Damian snarls right back at Tim like he thinks his display has anywhere near the same impact and that’s just adorable. Well, it would be, if he weren’t goading an actual dragon directly after Jason just prevented him from getting crispy-fried. Some gratitude. “Pathetic as usual, Drake. Even in a form where you have all the power you defer to Todd of all people! Shamef--”

Heavens Doors, Hell’s Gates (BatFam) (WIP): Hood chuckles, which sounds infinitely creepier through the voice modulator. “Yes, I do. Because you’re not stupid, Robin. You know how dangerous I am and exactly why I should terrify you. Now I suggest you use some of that self preservation instinct I hope Batman drilled into you and remember to stay far away from me. I might not be in so merciful a mood next time, little bird.”

Bad Influence (BatFam): “Well, you see, it’s very simple…” Jason eats the chip he fished from the bowl before continuing, “Fuck you. Fuck you is how.”

Rescue (BatFam) (WIP): “Ow.” Jason grumbles as he bangs his knee on the corner of the vent he's managed to crawl into. He really really hates being so damn huge sometimes. When he was a kid he could have crawled through spaces smaller than this one no problem. Now it's like stuffing an elephant in a horse trailer and this is the biggest vent in the entire place. Replacement owes him big time for this shit.
