Waldrapp Ibis (geronticus eremita)
taken at the Denver Zoo in Denver, Colorado
status: critically endangered
'The Waldrapp ibis used to be found across northern Africa and into the Middle East and Central Europe. Its population has now been reduced, however, to about 500 birds living in two small areas in Morocco. The only other sub-population to have survived into the 21stcentury – one that existed in Syria – appears to have died out.' - Maryland Zoo

Please help to save lost Northern Bald Ibises!
I'm not asking for money! Just sighting reports (Germany, Denmark, Sweden).
They are a bit smaller than geese and look like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ This is Enrico, one of the birds who got lost. When I posted this he was near Hamburg/Lübeck.
The birds are part of a project to reintroduce wild populations of highly endangered Northern Bald Ibises to Europe. Raised in southern Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, they usually migrate to Italy in autumn and spend winter there. Adolescent birds learn the route from experienced birds, but this year a group of adolescents flew north (to Scandinavia) by themselves.
Some of these are still up north. Now that winter has arrived the situation is getting dire for them and members of the project are trying to catch the birds to keep them safe this winter.
Most of them don't have trackers, so sighting reports are crucial!
If you see them, please report the sighting with their exact location via WhatsApp to:
Daniela Trobe 0043 660 14 27 204 or
Corinna Esterer 0043 660 50 33 511
Current (1.12.2023) approximate locations of birds who do have trackers: 3 in Schleswig-Holstein and one near Frankfurt in Germany, one near Varde in Denmark, one south of Jönköping in Sweden. But there are ca 20 birds that could be anywhere in the area between Jönköping, Denmark, Germany, and maybe western Czechia.
TL;DR Adolescent birds lost somewhere in (northern) Germany, Denmark, and southern Sweden. If you see them, please report the sighting with exact location!

Goodbye paper industry 📦
This week I had my last day at my old job and then sorted everything out with the new company. After 10 years with the same company, I will start a dual study programme in October. Now I have decided to leave the paper industry behind to start a new chapter. It will be hard and I don't know if I can do it. But I will try. This means I won't have much time for drawing or photography... or social media. Please don't worry about me. I'm just trying to become an engineer in addition to my technician degree (certified technical engineer?).
The background image is B flute and Ti the Waldrapp is my OC

I don’t know if you ever heard of a Waldrapp (or Northern bald ibis). I have to think of them every time I see Nachtkrapp Henrik. They are actually kinda cute I think.

Austrian biologist Johannes Fritz has dedicated his career to helping northern bald ibises, also called Waldrapp. This rare species of bird was completely extinct in the wild 50 years ago; however, through careful reintroduction, he's been able to “rewild” 277 ibises in his home country. To ensure that they survive the temperatures of the winter, Fritz even taught young birds a new migration path from Austria to Italy with the help of a flying machine.

Next one of my collages of photos I took during my visit to the Cotswolds Wildlife Park last week - with more birds here.  🐦 My favourites here the laughing thrushes (that don't look very amused 😅 ), the black cheeked lovebird and the waldrapp ibis (which I always thought looked a bit vulture-ish.😍 ) Also, the pink pigeon at the bottom is the first of MANY that I saw at the park.

CAN'T STOP - WON'T STOP (2023)
What's the point of showing my art online if it's going to be buried by algorithms under much more popular work and stolen for profit, NFTs or AI creations?
I've been searching for a purpose for a long time. But in the end, all that matters is making someone's day a little better. Even if my art only touches the heart of a single person, I think it was worth the effort.
After finding out in 2019 that my oldest drawing of my Waldrapp character had been stolen and sold as a wooden keychain, I became very hesitant to share my favourite art and photos online. I limited myself to simple sketches or phone photos and kept everything that meant a lot to me to myself. Then I stopped uploading my work altogether in 2021. I'm still taking a break from social media, but I won't stop drawing or taking photos. Maybe I will show more of it in the future.
Thank you for your patience and your continued support. I'm so glad you're still with me after all these years. All the best and take care!
