Hiiii I'm resending this ask just in case it got lost--do you have any thoughts on why Manfred only calls Miles by his last name (as least from what I can remember)? It's something that stuck out as odd to me when I was playing Turnabout Reminiscence for the first time considering that's basically his adoptive son but as Tumblr's #1 Manfred Enjoyer I'm curious if you have any additional insights. Loved your Manfred video essay btw and I am very much looking forward to the Franziska one too <3

couple schools of thought here

sad edgy take: purposefully othering him and reminding him (and everyone around him) he is not truly a von karma

uplifting take: miles is, in all likelihood, the last edgeworth and he does it to honour the family name, to draw attention to its resilience, or out of (performative) reverence for gregory

neutral take: manfred himself has some level of discomfort with the whole situation and views miles as both an opportunity and a burden. to address him informally doesn't feel quite right, but to invoke his last name feels like salt in the wound. however, that is a wound he must bear, and so he does.

i honestly lean toward the latter two, surprise surprise. they're in line with anime!Manfred which imo is the best written version of him. in the anime, manfred von karma admits to himself that he feels guilty for orphaning miles--NOT, crucially, for killing gregory, but for the fact that miles wound up collateral damage in DL-6. for a while, this version of manfred questions if the reason he adopted miles had something to do with that guilt.

anime!manfred also performatively talks about gregory with an air of great respect. this is 100% ingenuine, obviously, but it tells us that manfred is the type to pretend like gregory was someone he considered great and peerless.

personally i think calling miles "edgeworth" is something that manfred does without examining it himself. i do not think he made a conscious decision to do that. i think it's just what he feels comfortable with and he has not examined that comfort or lack thereof. i guess if i wanted to headcanon about it and examine that myself itd be like... "miles" feels wrong because it makes him feel too much like he's fathering the boy. and manfred would not delude himself, thinking that. edgeworth stings, though. reminds him of gregory in a completely different direction. both options feel wrong.

but, like i said, a lot of his opinions re: miles are "i got myself into this mess, and i will see it to its end." i will forever be thinking about this line:

so i think the subconscious process is like

i should call him edgeworth -> fuck that name tho i hate that dead bastard -> yeah and who's fault is it that you have to raise his son now? -> goddamnit my life is a nightmare -> "edgeworth come to dinner your sister is clawing at the table like a wild beast."

i think manfred von karma contains a nonzero amount of self-awareness, but it is a fickle thing. he's not sitting down with these thoughts. that's what i'm here for.

I know this isn't going to have any effect on those who feel justified in hating the adaptations they do - all sorts from comic to screen, book to screen, animated to live-action - but in my re-watch of ATLA (animated), I've noticed a lot more 'eeehhh' storytelling than I did in my other watches. Because I'm looking for it to compare specifically how they did it in the animated to how they did it in the live-action.

And let me tell you - the animated story is amazing, phenomenal, one of my favorites ever...and it has storytelling issues.

So maybe, if you were convinced the PJO adaptation was shit, the ATLA adaptation was awful, the Wheel of Time show was a tragedy, try going back and watching/reading the OG LOOKING for things to gripe about. Treat the OG like you treat the adaptation - with the most critical eye for any inconsistency, character work you don't like, plot holes, expositional dialogue, and pacing issues.

LOOK for those issues, and I guarantee you'll find them. Because, let me let you in on a secret: no story is perfect. We love them anyways because the story is still good. It's still meaningful. It still has merit.

Imagine the OG is actually the adaptation and (if you're able to honestly do that) you'll find things the adaptation did better.

Again, I know the people who've made it their personality to hate all adaptations and pretend they're storytelling geniuses who know best aren't going to pay attention to this, but idk, maybe one person will? Or for us more forgiving watchers, we'll be able to catch ourselves if we start to make some uncharitable, knee-jerk arguments about certain pieces of media.

Idk, just try it maybe.

WAIT- is this one of the alternate timelines created from the space-time sword ("Shintō Amenogozen")!? 👀

I'm an anime-only bsd enjoyer & ever since that damn sword popped up after Atsushi & Akutagawa killed him on the boat but he was able to erase/undo(?) that timeline, I've been thinking that technically means there's multiple timelines. This would be the one where Fukuchi won that conflict we just saw or something else entirely is going on given the way he's dressed (if that even is him)! 👀👀👀

ok after listening to the english version of the death note musical....... unpopular opinion i think but i actually prefer the japanese version? dont get me wrong, with some of the songs i do think i might like the eng version more but..... idk i like the lyrics of the japanese version a lot more? and obviously i only know them via a translation but i know for a fact that the entire focus of certain songs are different between versions.

like in the english version of the game begins, L is talking about his strategy to track down kira. but in the japanese version, he's more so talking TO kira directly and saying that he's going to take him down from his "god" status to hell. or mortals and fools, which had a wholeee different vibe in the japanese version being called like a cruel dream. and uhhhh am i insane or was rem's song before she dies an entirely different song? cause in english it was like a sort of generic love song that was pretty chill considering the context, while in the japanese version it was this superrr melancholic and striking ballad she sang while floating around misa.

idk but i really do think i prefer the japanese version. but the og english version is good too!!! i really liked hurricane and the way it ends in particular
