Cat Fancy – Freddie & His Best Friends

In many people’s eyes, Freddie Mercury was one of the world’s most dynamic and charismatic rock frontmen.

Yet for the man who had the love of countless fans, he loved his cats most. Peter Freestone, Mercury’s personal assistant and cook, wrote in his book “Freddie Mercury” that his boss put as much importance on them as any human in his life.

Jacky Smith, who has run the Official Queen Fan Club for 21 years, said, “Most of them were from rescue centers. We have a charity [in the United Kingdom] called The Blue Cross, which takes care of sick animals. Freddie got at least two from them, if not more.”

According to Smith, cat toys were sent from fans to the office from time to time, as the cats’ photos occasionally appeared in the club newsletter. Plenty of fans have also named their own cats Freddie, a gesture that, Smith said, would have flattered the singer.

Mercury’s first cats were Tom and Jerry, who he and then-girlfriend Mary Austin brought in during the early days of the band. She kept them when their relationship ended in the late ‘70s, yet he still considered them his, as the album dedication for “Mr. Bad Guy” proves. Austin, who remained his closest friend, gave him a lovely longhaired bluepoint he named Tiffany.

The most famous feline of the Mercury clan is Delilah, a large, tri-colored tabby who was adopted in late 1987. As the lyrics to her song state, and Freestone’s book confirms, she took over the house and pretty much did whatever she pleased. “She was a real character, that lady!” agreed Smith. “Delilah was just kind of funny. She was a bit of a bully to the others, but was always first on his lap, first for food.” In turn, Mercury favored her as well, picking her up more than the others. She would also fun to him for safety when the other cats would gang up on her. She loved sleeping at the foot of his bed, or in the laundry baskets.

“They were all well-loved and cared for and mostly ‘normal’ pussycats,” Smith said. “They did get ordinary cat food at times, but mostly it was fresh chicken and fish prepared for them. I also remember he used to talk to them on the phone if he was away for a long time.”

Freestone also wrote that each cat got its own Christmas stocking filled with treats and toys. They had full run of the house and were permitted outside during the day to roam the gardens. There were the occasional territorial markings on the soft furnishings for his staff to clean up, and the quick trips to the vet if a cat showed the slightest hint of illness.

No one except for his closest friends knows how long Mercury was aware he was HIV-positive, although both Freestone and Smith believe that his cats knew. Their unconditional love gave him great comfort and company in his final days, and Mercury would never deny them admittance to his bedroom. Said Smith, “Cats have that fantastic sixth sense… I imagine that they knew he wasn’t well and spent more time with him. It’s just the thing cats would do.”

Before Mercury passed away on Nov. 24, 1991, he made sure all of his loved ones would be taken care of. “They all stayed at Garden Lodge with Mary, which is where they still are today,” said Smith. “I have heard reports of Delilah being spotted on top of the wall occasionally.”

It’s clear she still rules the house. Freddie wouldn’t have wanted it any other way

Soo im honestly kindaa uhm,, goldfish-like; i have a crap memory. and whenever in a serious situation, one where you need to stay on guard, i instantly calm down after someone cracks a joke and forget abt the whole situation.. So bcuz of that i get called "the goldfish of (gc name)" 🥲

But im really motherly and caring! I always take care of my loved ones like a nurse, so pretty much- im my friends personal nurse AND doctor (as someone who startes studying abt medical stuff when i was like 10,, young, ik) i also take care of stray animals whenever i get the chance. feeding them, taking care of their wounds, whatever! Im a good balance of childish and mature, though i fall more on the childish side! I honestly give out 'sad, wet cat' vibes at first, since i mostly spend time alone, sulking abt being alone, reading in the library alone.. but im the total opposite! Honestly kinda weird but in a good way? Super kind, and generous, and sympathetic, i always consider other peoples feelings first ofc! Honestly kind of a people pleaser🥲 softhearted person with anger issues huhu.. Also keyword 'with anger issues' because i can and will beat someone up who did one simple thing to make me mad, even if theyre like 6'2 IDGAF FIGHT ME IM 5'10 ITS NOT MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE🙄🙄 veryvery energetic or the opposite, depends. havent slept for like 2 weeks straight😇

And while his twin was highly skeptical of you at first (when is he not skeptical of someone?), just seeing you with Floyd, and all the shenanigans you both get up too and how you always take care of him, you're basically family now at this point.

🦐 He is in the basketball club! Which is perfect for you! You love basketball and you two have player 1v1 quite a lot. Just be careful, because he can and WILL get competitive. Also, if you wear his jersey to his games, he has this derpy smile the entire time and will be showing off just for you. He turns into an absolute beast on the court. You're now the good luck charm of the NRC basketball team and Ace and Jamil always make sure you're there.

🦐 He finds out early on in the relationship about your habit of collecting sea shells. Now, because of him that collection has expanded a great amount. Look, you're dating a merman, he can and will be going under the water to gather the best and biggest shells thay he can find for your ccollection. But your personal favorite is a little cream colored chipped clam shell. He brought that one back after finding it randomly on a walk and it is now the most cherished one in the collection.

🦐 The way your mood fluctuates matches how his does, and while it annoyed him at first (like, is this how Jade and Azul feel when his does that?), he was able to quickly find out what can set you off or change your mood and is able to quickly adjust accordingly. Though he will admit that you look pretty hot when you get angry and tackle someone twice your size.

🦐 He would absolutely love to go exploring with you. It can be boring, it can be dangerous, so much could happen that you just don't know and that's what makes it exciting! If you ever get bored of looking at the supposedly haunted houses, he'll happily supply a breathing potion and he can show you some really cool shipwrecks!

🦐 Overall, a relationship with the reckless eel with legs is nothing short of an adventure. You know you'll never be bored, he loves how considerate you are with him and how you take care of him. And Azul and Jade are beyond thankful that you can actually get him to focus on his work, only if you're there, though 😅

thoughts part-way through episode seven of Once Again

I just feeling kind of meh about the series? I like it, but not as much as I keep expecting to like it. It has a lot of elements I enjoy, but somehow they're up to a show that I like as much as I think I would. There are also some specific elements I didn't like, but even before/without those I feel kind of meh.

I think maybe the balance between angst and fluff/humor is off for me? I'm glad there is also fluff and humor, the whole murder/trauma/guilt/time travel plot would be too dark for me without it. But somehow instead of enhancing each other it felt like the fluff detracts from the emotions of the angst, and the angst kinda makes it hard to relax into the fluff? idk

I still have half an hour left, so my thoughts could of course change.

Specific things I did not like, to get that out of the (my brain's) way:

Long awkward lingering shots of dead fish kisses. (The poor actors!) The first one sort of made sense as an unsuccessful attempt at capturing Ji-hoon's reaction by freezing time, but the sleep kiss just felt unnatural.

Instant boyfriends. I feel like we were missing a few steps/scenes in between Ji-hoon opening up to Jae-woo and there sweet little shopping/arcade date. (I liked the date montage itself.) Perhaps this was because the series was so short?

So minor and petty, but Jae-woo's coat. For some reason fabric with print versions of real textures annoy me. Also it was stressing me out that he wore the same clothes all the time. I guess he could have washed them each night?

Things I did like:

The opening, and the introduction to Jae-woo. This intriguing character on a bus ride (I think I'm a sucker for pensive characters on busses) and the slow emergence of his grief and trauma.

The phone calls across time! I like the concept - I liked each of their reactions.

Jae-woo's combination of guilt, grief, hero-worship. His sheer relief at hearing/seeing Ji-hoon again, and how he dropped all manners and shyness just to embrace him. Something about if felt so realistic as the reaction of a traumatized kid grown up, but not healed. He was a little kid again in his reactions to Ji-hoon, and the way they (actor, script, directing) did that really worked for me.

Similarly the change from little kid hero worship/guilt to attraction/falling in love with worked for me. I think it could easily feel weird/creepy but it didn't.

Ji-hoon's "who the hell is this guy?" reaction to Jae-woo. It made sense, it set up an interesting twist on the... not enemies to lovers... I guess grumpy/sunshine fits best? dynamic. He wasn't unkind, he was just confused and generally a tsundere character to begin with. I liked the way Jae-woo slowly won him over, through first just wanting to be near him, and second through constantly running off on a desperate mysterious mission.

Jae-woo's deciding the reason he'd time traveled was to save Ji-hoon, and his desperate search to figure out how and remember that night. He's confronting all his trauma and childhood demons just to save his hero.

Adult Jae-woo's confrontation with his child self. There was just so much interesting stuff in that.

The piece by piece reveal of what happened in the kidnapping. And the possible implication that adult Jae-woo is affecting it?

Hyung Jin 🥰 He's so pretty 😍 His gorgeous smile 😻 And also like him as a character, even if he is annoying at time. I love some ADHD representation (even if its not my kind of ADHD). And I like his pushing and caretaking of Ji-hoon, especially when he was being protective and telling Jae-woo to watch out. And I loved his track suits and puffy jackets.

Soft boyfriend sweaters. Korean shows in general seem to have the best soft boyfriend sweaters. Ji-hoon's white one was lovely.

Stuff I'm not sure how I feel/have mixed feelings about

Ji-hoon figuring out the time travel thing. On the one hand, it made sense of the evidence, and the show didn't have time to waste on Ji-hoon getting convinced. On the other hand, who thinks "time travel" when they need to explain something?

The dorm manager.

The kidnapping plotline. I realize it needed to be kind of bare bones to fit such a short series, and I didn't want something convoluted. But somehow it felt too simplistic for me? idk. I don't tend to watch kidnapping show much these days so I don't have points of comparison.

The fact that everyone was ok with this 10 year old kid wandering about on his own. It was a different time and place, I realize, but since that kid canonically gets kidnapped, it felt very stressful to watch. Although perhaps that was intentional tension building?

The general emptiness of the world. I'm guessing it was a budget/covid thing, but I think it contributed to me difficulty of fully investing in the world. Sometimes a spare cast can heighten the intimacy and intensity, but here it somehow pulled me out of the show.

I still haven't removed my tag filters, so I have no idea what anyone else thinks of the show.
