Remember when they stole a tank in Six of Crows?

I have not seen enough people talking about that one scene in Six of Crows where Inej, Jesper, and Wylan steal a tank. It is probably my favorite scene in the entire book and I am going to talk about it.

The chaos. The gremlin-ness of all of them. Jesper being so excited to drive the tank. Wylan and Inej manning the turret and laughing their asses off. The tank dragging a dirty, soot-stained banner that says “Fjerdan might” behind it. The poetic revelry and beauty that they all see in the complete and utter destruction they leave in their wake.

The way Nina, Matthias, and Kaz react when they see the tank. Nina starts shouting for joy. Matthias is in so much shock he just does not speak for a minute. Kaz is, and I quote, “grinning like an idiot,” which is one of the only times we see him really truly smile, and it’s an enormous, insane, excited grin. Kaz immediately denies being happy at all and keeps grinning at the tank.

Inej and Wylan popping out of the top and waving to them before blowing up the bridge.

Plus, this is one of the only times we see these characters laugh so much and be so overtly joyful. Wylan laughs so hard his stomach hurts. Kaz is grinning like a little kid. Inej has just bested her abuser and is riding the high of that and of firing a massive gun with Wylan.

And it gives us little snippets of dynamics that aren't focused on as much, like Kaz and Matthias or Inej and Wylan.

Truly one of the most chaotic, hilarious, and fun moments in the entire duology. It’s right up there with Kaz and Wylan crashing through Van Eck’s ceiling and onto a full dinner table to escape the guards, in my opinion.

Anyway I love this scene and we should talk about it more. 1000/10, will continue to re-read forever

Thanks to the recent hype, I'm being reabsorbed into the Blue Lock franchise/fandom. My sleep schedule has shifted back from 12:00AM to 3:00AM. I've been high off of endorphins reading the official paperbacks, and now hangovers are whooping my gluteus maximus. ;-;

Anyway, it all starts with my love for ma boi, Nagi. I read this series back in 2020 or 2021, and to this day, one of my favorite scenes is the one where he scores the first goal at the U-20 match. So, naturally, I wanted to set my new phone wallpaper as that!

30 minutes of Googling, Binging, and Pinteresting... nothing.

With no satisfactory wallpaper, I looked at my drawing tablet and thought, Well, fak it. Imma do it myself. *inserts Thanos meme*

And that's how the nightmare started. :D

I find my references, and BAM. Sketch done. Pretty EZ cuz I had a solid vision in mind already.

A quick greyscale filling and dramatic eye color.... and I was done!

Curled like a shrimp, I stared at my new lockscreen. (Maybe this is a lesson for me to never stare at my art for more than 5 minutes.) Strangely, I felt a churn of dissatisfaction (or midnight hunger).

"everything pathologized about the inferior groups / rejected as what's Wrong with their existence so as to "cause" these dynamics is "take 4" b/c this is from me trying to write about winston quant kid 2 billions like holy shit a series operating on this logic huh, giving this unvarnished expression of this perspective b/c it's assuming (& requiring...) we all have it. winston is constantly responded to as Guy Who's Out Of Line. the "superior" parties who hate him & get to have him as their punching bag / hit with the butt of the joke / at least ignored & excluded, but taken advantage of, but who all have to Stay In Line, how's that going for them even when it comes to the writing, where characters can't do anything if it's too disruptive of the In Universe hierarchy, unless it's a finale zone for a permissable shakeup, where ppl insulating/supporting each other being a bit Out Of Line is not a problem b/c they individually recognize each other's transcendently True worthiness in thee objective hierarchy we all assume exists, but definitely can never disrupt the out of universe hierarchy, e.g. the show decides wendy is the true hero, b/c she deserves to be. taylor has to hire back dollar bill & stand back while wags & wendy take the lead & the spotlight & hate the autistic guy they hired & show up so the Winner, who was written into the show with nothing to do but tell taylor they're not quite as good as wendy & then provide a vagina amidst otherwise being an Everyemployee who fails to even differentiate from an Axe Cap style everyemployee, can announce their winningness detached from anything that actually happened ever.

(plus! the role winston plays in them getting as close to this as they ever can be!) but then in the end taylor's just shortchanged b/c when it comes time to take down a central man as thee main thing all season, series finale style, they should be knocking it out in a few episodes with sacker & philip. instead we focus on wendy given the helm & fucking around all season. after disposing of winston b/c who even needs him for anything, this is Stay In Line times, and to do that we can do nothing w/autistic people but hate them & punish them for being undeserving. but don't worry b/c he doesn't get to be so Out Of Line as to easily cause problems for them & thwart them, b/c he just doesn't. taylor waits around on wendy & tells her she's the best b/c they just do. we are all in line on all of this ourselves so whew, there's no Disruption to notice if that key Alignment is maintained. rian was never holding herself Above winston if we just really tentatively suggest she doesn't think that she was, while letting every double standard at play be acted out. rian being "out of line" was that she wasn't being aggressive enough about any of her Superiority, b/c if you didn't leave bruising then nothing was That Bad; cue the assaults and boundary violations Reserved for the inferior losers as fun times & nothing anyone is beholden to with Consequences, we don't even make the viewer stick with the consequences of how it affects the target a second too long, lest you start to think it's Drama & not Jokes.

anyways it's all about the [categorization as inferior Other based on an assumed Hierarchy = inherently defined as Out Of Line] all "why get a formal diagnosis from a professional who doesn't know what to look for when at age 5 my peers went 'something's wrong with this one' & acted 'accordingly'" like even when people "know" what's Wrong with someone to make them the odd one out / "incompatible" w/what makes others exist Right, it's time to interpret everything else about them as "backing that up" no matter what, certainly no matter if it involves theoretically Valued concepts, b/c it's all first & foremost Staying In Line with the hierarchy, where the correct way to do things is: if you Can push someone else into greater vulnerability while you're established as Insulated, you Do. tl;dr winston inherently continuously Out Of Line; being "superior" requires an ultimate (&/or also quite Immediate. especially when it comes to "simple" matters already "correctly" arranged in the supposed Objective Hierarchy, like: winston's "objectively" inferiority (autistic swag)) Staying In Line. and what comes of it. all the most engaging & complex shit when people get to not actually stay in line. the power of it if taylor & tmc & allies didn't have to ultimately be shoved into Staying In Line even when it means wendy is the best & oh who cares about taylor & philip when wags is around etc etc. if winston being someone Out Of Line was seen as relevant & not an easy nonstop joke. while a quant who is so In Line as to correctly personally abuse him even more than others are doing is so ""out of line"" as to decide she's already gotten everything she wants & may as well live the dream now, b/c she's not an aggressive man, one has to suppose, same diff as wendy getting to believe she's Better than everyone & is nobly in charge of orchestrating their fates when she Means & Knows so well, & is somehow pitted against prince being this same figure but without having to confront that fact. he's mean! or whatever. he's talking about killing people & wendy isn't so that sorts it out forever. All ik is that she ends up being mortal or near mortal after her fight with Ghost and Flower and she is Not happy about it, but it's also the only way PK would have left her alive and Flower is big on second chances so now she's just here, bitter and angry and a shadow of her former self (and actually I just didn't have it in me to kill her before I could do something cool with her + I like the potential dynamic she could have with other characters)

Flashes of a golden bridle, a dark room and a whip with an iron end cloud his vision and make his stomach churn. It was the day the eldest of his brothers brought him to Hollow Hall; the same day his father, High King Eldred, sentenced Asha to be taken away to the Tower of Forgetting and himself banished from the Palace grounds for a crime he did not commit, when he was little over nine years of age. Balekin had made it abundantly clear that should he not accept his punishment, then he was to leave Hollow Hall and his mercy, to instead roam the Lower Courts of Insmire which held dreadful, monstrous fates for inconsequential Princes ― and because the monster he knew was far better than a monster he did not, he had taken off his shirt, sank to his knees and accepted each ghastly strike from the mortal woman's hand until his back bled and his vision swarm far too greatly to hold onto consciousness. It was humiliating ― then again such was the purpose of his punishment ― but it hadn't ended then. When he came to, he was laying on his chest upon a grand oak-made bed with carved legs to resemble animals and covered with fur coverlets ― the softest and simultaneously warmest bed he had ever laid on his entire life ( and perhaps, the only bed he had ever been on, considering he had spent the first nine years of his life either curled up underneath banquet tables of the revels held in the Palace of Elfhame or the beddings of hay in the royal stables ). Once Balekin announced that it was enchanted for the wearer to obey the commands of the person whose hair belonged to, that ought to wear it a time until he grows obedient as a Prince should be without the use of it and when Margaret ceased her tending to instead attempt to put it on him, Cardan had thrashed, and clawed, and bit his refusal but wounded as he was, the device was inevitably worn. He did, however, manage to deliver a particularly nasty bite on Balekin's wrist, regardless of whether the thorns adorning his hand hurt his mouth and tongue, but that only resulted in the eldest Greenbriar rage and the decision that since the youngest Prince liked to act like an animal then he would be treated as one and was hence sentenced to spend the night in one of Hollow Hall's basement cells where the grounds are cold, the rooms are dark and the bars are made of iron as punishment to whoever is deserving enough to be put inside. As far as punishments go, that did not differentiate much from the remainder of them throughout the following decade, but unlike the rest, Cardan did cry that night. It was an act that betrayed weakness and it disgusted him. His emotions were a swirling tornado of disgust and hate; hate for himself, for the stupid mortals, for his father, Dain, all his siblings who refused to take him in and the one who did ― hate who burned so bright it almost numbed the cold bitting on his skin. That night, he decided that he would school himself to hide the unwanted emotions, that he would learn to pretend, that he would learn to please his brother and fit into a skin that was not his to wear to begin with. Not a heart of stone, but a heart of fire, strong enough to burn down Elfhame and everyone in it.

this was too long for twitter but honestly i was pleasantly surprised about the publicity for heartstopper because i expected everyone on twitter to be like "wELL if every single actor doesn't immediately come out to everyone then how do we KNOW all the queer characters are actually being played by queer actors hmMM??" bc yknow. the internet is just Like That 🙃

and heartstopper's response (bc they almost certainly anticipated this) was literally just like "we have a queer cast, trust us, and not a single person in the cast owes you any more information than that. not to MENTION we go above and beyond to show you that this tv series was CREATED not only by an openly queer author who was given FULL control to write the entire screen adaptation of their own graphic novels, but also by a openly queer director who specifically made sure to hire as many queer workers as possible for every. other. department of the show. because yes, it's super important that queer actors play queer characters; but it's even MORE important that the representation extends FAR beyond the people you see on screen."

bc THAT IS HOW YOU HAVE GOOD REPRESENTATION. NOT forcing all of your actors to spend every single interview fielding questions about their own personal gender & sexual identities. good representation is making sure that―unlike the majority of films and tv shows, sadly―if you look beyond the main cast, the roles of director/producer/writer/photographer/makeup artist/crew member/etc are ACTUALLY fulfilled by a diverse group of talented people. true representation doesn't stop at the actors, or the portrayal of characters. it goes all the way up the ladder to everyone making the movie/tv show/etc happen in the first place. change can't happen long-term unless "older," well-established people in the industry (like euros lyn) use their position to create opportunities for fresh, new, young, diverse talent.

tldr heartstopper is a brilliant example of how to properly create a series both by and for the lgbtq+ community, and i was SO relieved to see all the publicity revolve around the story and the actors and the importance of representation WITHOUT requiring anybody who wasn't already out to clarify anything about themselves.

#obviously no representation is perfect. but when i watched that video and listened to euros lyn...oh i can't tell you how EXCITED i was #i specify alice being allowed to have full control over the adapted screenplay bc we know that isn't always the case with adaptations #there's always a fear that when something is adapted the control is taken away from the author and given to people who dont know the story #well enough to portray it authentically. even though alice has said it was difficult for them to write she DID IT #and that fact + the fact the whole cast and crew was genuinely in love with this story is why the adaptation was so true to the original #which i am ABSOLUTELY sure would not have been the case if the people behind the scenes didn't identify with the story in any way #also ofc some actors HAVE spoken out about their identities which is great! but what i noticed is that most of them talk v generally abt it #but it's not bc they feel like they can't come out or anything bc i wouldn't say anyone's particularly closeted #they just...feel free to be themselves? i'm sure they're out to anybody important in their lives and that's all that matters #idk this got Way Too Long sorry #i just have Lots of thoughts on this lol my dms and askbox are always open if anyone wants to talk abt it #this is Weird i've never posted about heartstopper on here before hello #heartstopper #heartstopper netflix

Kevin Kline was excellent though, so good in comparison to everyone else (*coughs* Roxane *coughs*) that at a certain point (*coughs* Roxane in the balcony *coughs*) he seemed to have fallen into this production from a different one with better actors. Despite the choice of making his Cyrano overly funny, which I imagine wasn't Kline's or not entirely given everyone in the play was trying to be funny (Roxane was ridiculously exaggerated, but this Le Bret in particular made no sense as a character imo?), I quite liked his performance.

#I'm not sure about him crying in the balcony scene given how important thematically that is‚ but he was so good in that scene #while Roxane was telling her lines with less nuance and sincere emotion than kids in their school plays #Besides‚ they also didn't include the part about never crying to avoid staining the divinity of tears with his ugly nose iirc so... #I guess I can be okayish with the choice despite how later on the tear on the letter and the fact that Cyrano cried #will hit Christian nonetheless. By the way‚ although I didn't like the acting much and especially not the choice of making it come off #as funny or ridiculous‚ I actually really liked the idea of Christian being deeply moved by Cyrano's lines in the balcony scene #I found more romantic tension between them here than in the McAvoy version xD #Probably more than in any other version I've watched for now in fact. I think the actor wasn't bad when he was given the choice #to be serious about the role. I was never mad for him but I liked him enough in their last scene together when they discuss telling Roxane #I talk too much #I should probably delete this later #Cyrano de Bergerac #Anyway yes... #Although I was not entirely content with some of the choices in mood‚ Kevin Kline was fantastic #and I think this version was brilliant in some regards #For instance the staging was beautiful #It also is the only version I've watched thus far that has Carbon de Castel-Jaloux asking for Roxane's handkerchief to use as flag #and then Cyrano holding the lance it hanged from when charging against the enemy #I love those details so I really appreciate it. I liked what we got to see of the cadets too for instance #I love what we see of them with Cyrano‚ with Carbon de Castel-Jaloux and with Roxane in that last scene #And I love the costumes. I think this production has my favourite costumes for now #Including the Depardieu one which gets a good name but that I actually don't like much aesthetically #and including the Solès one too even though that beautiful red costume Roxane has weights on its own almost like an entire set of costumes
