#what if that's why some palismen are abandoned

I wish we were shown more about the Palisman carving process. I've wondered whether Flapjack's scarred eye was due to an injury when he was with Evelyn, during his time abandoned, or whether it was just a quirk/mishap of his carving. It'd also be cool if it was from a knot or a scar in the palistrom wood piece. If the bumps and scars from carving are carried over to when the palisman bonds to a witch and is animated, I feel like we would see more palismen with bumps, knots, and scars -- which is awesome. Woo!! Normalizing imperfections and quirks of beginning carvers

TOH: The Problem With Waffles
So someone who has lost someone close to them takes palistrom wood and starts carving. They make them in the image of that which they have lost, imparting upon them a desire for them to be what they once were. Alongside this, their new form allows them to also act as their will made manifest upon the world as both lackey, partner, family and pet. Their life is only meaningful until thrown away, abandoned or ended by that which made them.
Am I talking about Hunter being made by Belos or Hunter making Waffles?
Waffles and Hunter actually have a lot in common, such as how as an orphan Philip likely saw his brother as the man who gave him a chance at life after his parents died, just like Flapjack explicitly did for Hunter when Hunter was going to die. A core element of the problem though is actually with how lame the Grimmwalkers are and the lack of magical materials in the Isles. Rather than a complex set of reagents for witch's brew, we get maybe a handful of items and the big two are Titan's Blood... And Palistrom.
Because of this, it's kind of easy to look at Grimmwalkers as advanced Palismen. Hell, it's actually weird that Hunter CAN'T use magic. Palismen have innate magic just by being made by Palistrom wood. Luz proves that they can do magic on their own since she uses Owlbert to activate glyphs from far away, something she cannot do herself. It's implied as part of why witches are commonly stronger with their staffs than without (not that that ever comes into play at any time). Meanwhile, Hunter has multiple magical components, at least one of which is INCREDIBLY powerful and far rarer than Palistrom wood which would make one assume they're stronger because one of the only ingredients we know of for Grimmwalkers is a Galdorstone. So... Why can't he cast magic? Because he doesn't have a bile sac? Does that mean every Palisman actually gets split in half during carving so you can carve out its tiny organs before sealing it back together without any sign of this crack? Because I REALLY doubt it.
Add to that the fact that Palismen are regularly abandoned by their witches for SOME FUCKING REASON (I think the Bat Queen in S1 should have claimed that witches "...No longer are able to care for them" to imply they died because otherwise, what the fuck?) and most seem perfectly without a Palisman and they don't seem all that different from how Belos treats Hunter. Narratively and functionally the two are just treated the same. One simply takes on a more human form since Palismen are PLENTY sentient and able to talk with others.
It makes how Hunter's arc ends, as a clone of Caleb by how many people read it, including myself, suck even harder. He's not just taking cues from the man he was made to look like after all. By chasing a lost loved one like this instead of letting go and looking to the future, he also copies Belos.
And that is the exact opposite of ANYTHING his arc should imply.

I stared at this picture for a little too long and wrote this:
"Mom says I have to go back to school soon," Luz lamented, like she was giving them some terrible news. She laid down on the grass, next to her girlfriend, feeling the warm sunlight on her tan skin.
"Yeah, that makes sense; I couldn't go in your place forever," reasoned Vee, who was on her basilisk form, laying on her stomach and playing with a leaf she'd found on the ground. "I'm gonna have to lend you my notes, you have a lot of homework to catch up on."
All 6 kids were hanging out on the front yard of the abandoned house taking a little break from all the research they had been doing trying to build a portal. Being on an isolated location rarely visited by unknown humans allowed them the freedom to uncover their ears, let out their Palismen and use magic as they pleased. It was a very comfortable place.
Amity noticed her girlfriend's bad mood and closed the book she was reading to look at her.
"Maybe we can come with you?" she suggested, on an attempt to cheer Luz up.
"Oh, oh!" Gus exclaimed, jumping up and down on the tree branch he had climbed. The others worried that he would fall, but they knew they could catch him if he did. "We can attend human classes and learn like you did at Hexside! I can take notes and show the kids from the H.A.S. when we get back!"
"Aww, that's really sweet, you guys," smiled Luz, endeared by the image. "but I don't think that's a good idea."
"Aaww, why not?" Gus pouted.
"Well, for starters, none of you have birth certificates or any legal documents to get enrolled."
"And?"
"And you guys still don't know a lot about humans, you're probably going to blow your cover."
"And?"
"And human school is actually really horrible and boring," Luz frowned, fighting back old memories of bullying and bad grades and rude teachers.
"I honestly really like human school," said Vee "it's fun!"
"You're insane," whispered Luz, though it was clear that she was joking.
"Guys, I'm actually with Luz on this one," Hunter said. He was sitting cross-legged under Gus's tree, idly petting Flapjack.
"Who are you and what have you done with our Hunter?" Gus leaned down to glare daggers at his older friend.
Hunter laughed. "But seriously, going to human school is quite risky and we need to stay focused on building the portal!"
"Come on, Hunter!" argued Amity "I thought you of all witches would've jumped at the chance to study and learn new things."
"Not saying I don't want to, I'm saying it's a bad idea," Hunter got defensive "you're with me; right, Willow?"
Willow, who had been laying at Amity's side and looking away from them this whole time, didn't respond.
"Willow?" Hunter asked again.
This time, Willow turned around and let out the biggest, loudest, ugliest snore ever. The girls, especially Amity, looked disgusted while Gus laughed. Hunter, meanwhile, stared at her open-mouthed like this was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen.
"That explains why she hasn't talked for like, 20 minutes," said Gus, still laughing.
"Shhhh!! Don't wake her!" Hunter shushed him "let her sleep, she needs it."
"You're kidding, right? She's the one always keeping us awake with her ungodly noises," Amity rolled her eyes as she said this.
" 'Sides, Willow can sleep through pretty much anything," added Luz.
Vee suddenly smiled maniacally. "Let's test that theory."
She took her leaf and started tickling Willow's face with it.
While Vee kept at it, the other 3 observed with quiet giggles. Hunter rolled his eyes, a little annoyance, a little fondness. Honestly, if it had been anyone else, he probably would've been onboard with the joke but his soft spot for Willow made it difficult to make fun of her.
He sighed, hopeless. She was just so adorable and delicate and beautiful. He watched her, still snoring and drooling and kicking Amity in her sleep a little bit. The sunlight reflected on her glasses in the most perfect way and he suddenly wanted to keep this moment with him and commit it to memory.
That's when he remembered that Willow's (originally Camila's) camera was still in her bag and, without really thinking, he took it and snapped a picture of this absolutely wonderful image.
Unfortunately, the flash from the camera attracted attention from the rest of the group. They all stared at him strangely, making his face and ears go a deep shade of red.
"What was that?" asked Luz, though her smile implied she already knew.
"I-I j-just..." he stuttered, scrambling for a good answer "I w-wanted to capture the moment cause... it seemed like it'd make a good picture because... uh..." he sighed, defeated "she just looked so cute."
"Cute?" Amity laughed "are you sure? that starfish creature next to me?"
That made Hunter's face even redder. "I think it's actually weirdly endearing!"
The other 4 laughed and Gus especially shaked his head in disbelief. Love really did make you blind and deaf. If what he'd seen from Luz, Amity, Hunter and Willow was any indication, he feared the day he would find the love of his life, for that would be the day he'd forever lose all his braincells.
Not long after that, Willow stirred awake. She stretched her arms, took off her glasses to rub her eyes and groaned.
"Good morning, Sleeping Beauty!" said Luz, cheerfully.
"Did you have a nice nap?" asked Vee, dropping the leaf.
"Yeah," Willow smiled, still a little sleepy.
"Oh! Willow, look!" Luz called her attention, quickly grabbing the photograph from Hunter's grasp and handing it to his crush.
Willow looked at the picture, pleasantly surprised.
"Aww, what a nice photo! It's a really cute and fun moment and the light is hitting my face just right!"
Hunter felt an odd mix of embarrassment from her seeing the picture and pride from her liking it. Willow was really passionate about photography, not to mention the most amazing witch he knew, so the compliment meant a lot.
"This is really good, who took it?" she looked at the 2 boys, because it was obvious none of the girls had done it.
Hunter avoided eye contact and fidgeted with Flapjack's feathers shyly while Gus got a shit-eating grin on his little face.
"Hunter took it!"
Hunter looked up at his younger friend, feeling betrayed.
"Wow, Hunter!" Willow smiled at him "I didn't know you were such a good photographer."
Hunter was blushing much more happily now. He allowed himself to return her smile, showing off his tooth gap.
"I learned from the best," he miraculously managed to say without fainting.

Thinking out loud...I'm both relieved that Hunter wasn't singled out by The Collector to go through these horrors...yet ofc curious what it may've looked like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nonetheless, his mind would be unleashing nightmares upon him even after Belos's death.
C-PTSD nightmares seem to have three flavours (going off my own experience..this isn't textbook or researched, as a disclaimer).
There are two kinds that have the theme of immediate danger.
First is the type where you yourself are being physically threatened. I don't want to choose the more graphic violent ones for this post but an example I can cite is being arrested and thrown into prison. Those got me on pretty high alert and idk, it was like this I guess:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Second would be the ones where you can't save someone else. Those hurt and yes, they pack a nasty punch. I've only had this type once as far as I can remember. But poor Hunter would have it worse since Belos could literally puppet him to be the one to harm the best friend he loved most:
Tumblr media
The relational ones, though? That involve being blamed and/or abandoned, with no physical threats? Those are where you are in touch with the shame, which in a way makes it the worst of all three in my opinion. Because the deep sense of shame is the aspect of the condition which you can't reason your way out of using impersonal logic...in the way that you can e.g. come up with an escape plan or hold off an assailant.
The most memorable one was being in a dark room, almost entirely pitch black, seeing my 5 or 6-year-old self looking at me like this:
Tumblr media
and because you just know stuff in dreams, I knew she was demanding an answer from me, as to why I wasn't there for her to protect her.
And holy smokes this was freakier than the first two categories. Because I had no adrenaline in my system, and somehow this third kind of dream always takes place in narrow spaces where I can't sprint and run elsewhere. Brainnnn, whyyyy?? Therefore I couldn't even give myself an adrenaline rush from fleeing anyway if I wanted to. (Idk if anyone else experiences this?) The first two kinds always took place in wide spaces e.g. underground parking lots and forests.
A similar nightmare involved an abusive family member whom I was trapped on a small boat with, and I had to listen to him demean and minimize me all over again while I was stuck, and I somehow didn't make myself just jump off the boat to swim away.
This type of nightmare is the one that can get me upset for hours after I wake from them, while with the others I get out of the shock a lot quicker for some reason.
For Hunter...it would involve Belos, other Grimwalkers, his friends and others such as those he previously worked with in the Castle, blaming him and judging him in his nightmares. Worst is if Flapjack does the same to him and rejects him. And I apologize for this angsty train ride but...but...he might see those poor lost palismen all over again, since it points towards the profession we see him thriving in, during the epilogue sequence...:
Tumblr media
*drags this lost child to therapy sessions*
So yeah. The first two kinds are a more straightforward fit with how C-PTSD changes a person's neural networks and primes them to act relatively calmly in actual physical crises. The high price paid is, the person therefore struggles once things become safer (e.g. arguing with someone who is actually a safe presence), in some twisted unfair form of compensation. This is seen in how Hunter's triggers properly emerge once he's actually physically distanced from Belos: Labyrinth Runners and For the Future are the main examples.
It is painful and difficult, only becoming easier once the person has built a solid support network and can repair their own relationship with themselves.
In fact, my body sometimes feels as though I strangely want such a thrill e.g. riding in an ambulance all over again, a re-enactment of those times of high alert, because they are still more 'comfortable': rather than having no choice but to experience and accept that ingrained sense of shame, process it, and ride the wave instead of simply throwing a punch at it or evading it. Wanting that thrill is our equivalent of wanting a "fix", I guess.
Tumblr media
Safe to say, this is why the canon Watching and Dreaming moments that hit hardest are the (false) blaming statements that Luz's friends direct at her. Because the ultimate test is whether the dreamer believes those or not.

Not to be mean or anything... but when I see people compare Luz to Caleb and think Evelyn and Caleb are supposed to be about Lumity I tab out immediately.
The parallels between Caleb and Luz don't work; and Lumity isn't Caleb+Evelyn because
Hunter is a clone of Caleb and is the only Grimwalker who looks the most like him. Hunter and the GG's are tied to Caleb whether or not they like it or are even aware of it. Their lives and deaths have always been determined by what Philip believes his brother should have been - a fellow witch-hunter who would never abandon him for the evil he wants to destroy.
2. Caleb is an orphan. The only remaining family member is his brother Philip. Before Hunter knew the truth of his origins he was raised to believe that his entire family was wiped out by wild magic. And that it was his "uncle" who saved him and is his only remaining family. This mirrors Caleb and Philip as orphans who were the only ones left of their family after tragedy befell them. Though the caretaker role has been reversed.
3. Caleb's entire deal is that he's fundamentally a good person who eventually forsakes his "oppressor" mindset. We can even see this quality present in all the GG's including Hunter. Every single one of them came to the realization that what they were doing was messed up and changed themselves. And that they'll always try to put a stop to Philip's plans. But yeah, the "unlearning of an oppressor mindset" doesn't work with Luz for reasons that are so obvious I'm not going to waste time writing them out.
4. Amity did not "entice Luz away" with magic and Luz did not run away to a new world because of Amity. Luz ran away to TBI specifically because she followed Owlbert through the door. And she didn't stay there for Amity. She stayed there only because she wanted to learn magic and live out some kind of grand destiny in a fantasy world. AGAIN, Luz did not run away to TBI because she wanted to start a more peaceful life with her lover - she "ran away" because she wanted to learn magic and live out some kind of grand destiny in a fantasy world. She never planned on staying on TBI for the rest of her life despite dating someone from TBI. And I honestly don't see this show ending in a situation where Camilla and Luz are going to spend the rest of their lives on TBI. The most likely outcome is that they're going to find a way to go back and forth between worlds.
Also I want to point out that unlike Philip's and Caleb's relationship, Camilla's and Luz's relationship isn't hinted at being unhealthy and eventually abusive. This is important to note because Caleb most likely "abandoned" Philip because he came to realize their relationship was poisonous. Luz didn't INTENTIONALLY "abandon" Camilla like Caleb did with Philip. Camilla is not a toxic influence over Luz's life that Luz wanted to get away from. This is why Luz "running away" and Caleb running away doesn't - the motivations are completely different.
5. Amity does not have meaningful history with the main villain like Luz, Hunter, Evelyn and Caleb do.
6. Luz lured Hunter away from Philip. I mean this literally and from a character arc standpoint. Here, let me just copy and paste what I wrote in my pinned post:
" Okay so let me explain why this drives me crazy as someone who loves storytelling. Because this parallel doesn't start when Hunter is running away with Luz in Hollow Mind and stop in the season finale. It goes deeper than that - to a character arc level - and it goes all the way back to Hunting Palismen. This episode is the start of Hunters positive change arc and "betrayal." The person to spearhead his positive change arc and "betrayal" is our favorite WILD WITCH Luz. Completely unbeknownst to Hunter, the moment he lets Luz go he is taking a stand against Belos. And he's following Calebs footsteps by choosing a wild witch over Philip. That is so romantic it's crazy to me"
Romantic undertones aside - do you know how important this is? That both Hunter and Caleb were lured away by someone who represents something they've been taught to fear? Caleb was taught that magic was evil so any practitioners of magic were agents of the devil who needed to be killed. Hunter was taught that wild magic was dangerous and that anyone who didn't want to seal their magic were criminals that needed to be killed. Do i need to say any more than that? This is also why "Amity enticed Luz with magic" doesn't work because Luz was never afraid of magic.
7. Luz introduced Flapjack to Hunter like Evelyn did with Caleb. It's unclear whether or not Flapjack was hers or she carved him for Caleb. I'm more inclined to believe the later because of how Flapjack is a cardinal - a.k.a a creature that is not a native species on TBI. Either way, the point is: without Evelyn showing him that magic isn't evil, Caleb would have never wanted Flapjack. Just like how Hunter would have never wanted Flapjack if Luz didn't show him "wild" magic wasn't dangerous.
8. Evelyn is a Clawthorn and Amity is not. Luz isn't a Clawthorn either but she's heavily associated with this family. And this family has alot of ties to the plot of TOH. Amity doesn't hold the same weight in the story like the Clawthorns do.
9. Luz is a "witch from another world".
People tend to forget what wild witches are and how magic works in universe. Wild witches are witches/demons who refuse to limit themselves to one of the nine main forms of magic.
Magic operates in two ways: either the spellcaster writes a spell in glyphs to perform it or the bile sack, which produces all the glyphs, combines them for the caster. For the former, if you know all the glyphs then you have access to all the same spells someone with a bile sack would have. However, unlike a person with a bile sack, you need to spend some time writing out combinations to figure out how to get the spell you want. This is why this parallel still works despite Luz not being an "actual" witch. Because, even without a bile sack, she still has excess to all forms of magic, just like any wild witch with a bile sack would have.
I need to point out Luz not being an "actual" witch is irrelevant. The point is that Evelyn and Luz represent something Caleb and Hunter were indoctrinated to fear. Evelyn representing magic and Luz representing WILD magic. Through Luz and Evelyn, Caleb and Hunter came to realize the thing they feared wasn't actually dangerous. And because of Luz and Evelyn, Hunter and Caleb were "lured away" from Philip so they could try and live more peaceful and fulfilling lives.
It just doesn't work with any other combo of characters besides Luz and Hunter.

Was the movie Ravenous one of the inspirations for the Wendigo Belos in the Shadow Puppets AU?
Tumblr media
Not really. I'm just fascinated by Wendigo folklore the way that some people are fascinated with vampires or werewolves. Belos's monster form in canon take its general visual cues from the classic Hollywood interpretation of the Wendigo (being an animal-like humanoid, usually deer) and I'm trying to blend that in with both more accurate Wendigo lore and the pretty messy world building of the show.
You know, since episode one made the bold claim that every myth humans have is a little bit of the Demon Realm leaking into the Human world, but never does anything with that idea.
As I already stated, the Deer-like visuals is a very Hollywood interpretation, actual indigenous Folklore for the Wendigo usually depicts them as giants with a heart of ice or indistinguishable from an ordinary human. It varies depending on the culture and whether the creature in question is actually a Wendigo or a similar spirit but a common versions it is a malevolent spirit embodying human gluttony, greed, selfishness and violence with an insatiable hunger for human flesh
Tumblr media
Somewhere in my lore tag I have a headcanon post about the Wendigo where I tried to blend this a bit, but to elaborate; Philip's true form is actually a puddle of amorphous rot, his ability to take a recognizable shape is correlated to how well he's been feeding.
A key part of his character in the Shadow Puppets AU is his refusal to acknowledge the loss of his humanity and act against his instinctual need to consume people because at one point in his life, he was a good little Christian boy who knows Gluttony, Greed and Wrath are three of the Seven Deadly sins, and Thou Shalt Not Kill is one of the Ten Commandments.
That's a subject I personally find really interesting; what happens when a creature that's the embodiment selfishness is born from someone who was once pure and selfless, who's most selfish desire is to stay human? It's complicated and messy and a complete nightmare for Philip, but a lot of fun for me as a writer.
His mistake is lying to himself and others that the monster isn't really him, it is a Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde situation, the Wendigo is the the dark and twisted evil side of his humanity given form, but he thinks he can fight it and desperately tries to by not letting himself act like a Wendigo and to this end he mostly relies on Astrophel to keep him in line. Astrophel's character arc revolves around him realizing he's done a poor job at being Philip's Guardian Angel and failed him as a friend.
Side note: Although Philip has his own reasons for being angry and wanting to destroy the Boiling Isles, and it technically his idea, he asked Astrophel's permission and has been carrying out this goal under the pretense that he's doing it for his friend
Philip fights it by consuming Palismen instead, which he considers nothing more than animals, and because no one knows what he really is, even the ones that know he's cursed, they let him get away with it. Early in the events of the AU he horded Palismen that he stole from the people of the Boiling Isles or found abandoned, but even that wasn't enough and he struggled keeping a human form resulting in the deer-like monstrosity, it's a reflection of how Philip sees himself which is why it bares resemblance to the mask his brother made him.
As Emperor Belos, with people literally serving him Palismen on platters, he was able to keep himself fed enough that he kept his human shape with ease, and doesn't have problems with it again until the supply of Palismen starts drying up. No Palisman Beast in this AU, his struggles to control his monster form is literally because he's secretly a starving Wendigo and loosing his grip on his humanity as his need to feed himself grows.
Something that makes this scary in the RP (as if isn't already terrifying in general) is that before Philip was cursed he was a lot more like Luz than he is in canon; weird and struggling to fit in, but empathic and selfless. The Wendigo curse stripped that away from him, and it's not something he asked to or was aware could happen either, so rather than her moping about helping Philip, in our AU Luz spends her time back in the human realm struggling with the horrific realization that she could become a Wendigo just as easily as Philip did and fear that she might already have the curse growing in her.

Huntlow and Wittecouple
So we discover Hunter is Bi and Willow is Pan. Everyone is asking, "Was Caleb Bi too?" We can all assume that maybe Evelyn was, seeing as most of the Boiling isles is on the spectrum of LGBTQA+. In the end though, I don't think it matters what sexuality Caleb was, Huntlow and Wittecouple are similar.
Evelyn was a witch, someone who could be tried as a witch in Puritan times. Of course they were going to make her a woman character, also to parallel her to Eda and hint at the Clawthorne connection. That is why they made her character a girl.
They could have made Hunter a girl, but I don't think Belos would tolerate a Trans person as his "brother." They could've made Caleb a girl, but I don't think it was likely that women were witch hunters. If Belos cloned a sister, that would've been a more messed up reason. Keep it closer to PG-rated. Hence and Caleb and Hunter are boys.
So we won't know what Caleb was into, because like Hunter, he only ever had eyes for one person. This person for both of them, was the one who allowed them a chance to live freely.
Hunter has only known authority, training, and rules. He likes to read, he has a big heart, but he's not allowed to express that freely. He's supposed to be something for somebody else. He meets Willow, Willow impresses him by showing him people deserve second chances and not taking no for an answer. They play Flyer Derby together and he actually has fun with other people. He decides he likes these people, so he reveals his affiliation with the enemy He doesn't want to be apart from these people, and he doesn't want to hurt them...Willow most of all. Realizing what he would be putting them through if they join his group, he let's them go, but he remains in contact with them. Willow realizes he's not the threat he's usually portrayed as, he's actually a good person. They end up bonding over their cute palismen over pentstagram. Hunter falls fast, and after seeing Hunter's sensitive and dorky side, Willow falls too. Hunter eventually joins Willow's group, abandoning the Emperor.
As for Caleb and Evelyn, Evelyn was an outsider to town, disguised as a human. Caleb saw her as someone who deserved a chance to not be outcast, because him and his brother were once outsiders. She seemed to be friendly with birds, like he was. Also a carver? like he was? (Not sure if he started that tradition). They would probably go for nature walks, feed birds, bond over cute cardinals. She probably allowed him to be a little adventurous, and not just fill a societal standard that Gravesfield expected of him. She saw, that despite him being an official witch hunter, he was kind and didn't desire to hurt people. This would lead Evelyn to trust Caleb enough to reveal her status as one of the enemy. He might be shocked at first, but realizes she's not a monster, and allows him to enjoy life without judgement. They communicate with the rebus and see each other in secret. Caleb falls for her hard, as she fell for him, so much so he leaves his group, his family, and goes to be with Evelyn in the Boiling Isles.
So, long story short...both Huntlow and Wittecouple were from opposing sides, but both love stories allowed them to be brought together. One being freed from their life of conformity, ruthlessness and authority, being allowed to be who they wished to be.
P.S They must have also awakened some power in them, Huntlow with Hunter's flashstep, and Wittecouple with glyphs.

Okay but hear me out.
That AU where Hunter was lost into the human realm as a baby and Camilla finds him and raises him with Luz is so interesting to me. Like they already have a sibling dynamic but it would be even more so. Especially since he would learn Spanish so when they get to the demon realm I can imagine them starting a fight in English and progressing into a loud fight only in Spanish and Eda and King just standing off to the side like "what is going on?"
ALSO I have ideas about how Hunter's story would progress in this AU for anyone to take if they're writing fanfic about this just give me some credit and send me a link.
Hunter finally learns he came from the demon realm and Eda starts trying to tech him magic but he's kind of heartbroken he can't do it because he's been different his whole life and once he finds out what he's supposed to be able to do he still can't do it right. Enter Luz and cheering him up with glyph magic and they find glyphs together.
(Eda also makes a comment about never seeing his eye color before. Foreshadowing)
Hunter makes friends with Edric, Emira and Viney as well as Liz's friends and enrolls in the potions track at Hexside.
When Luz fights Belos the first time, Hunter is there too, and Belos tells him who he is. He tells him he's a grimwalker, he'd recognize his face anywhere, and tries to get him to join the coven and become the golden guard which he refuses.
Afterwards when all is safe, Hunter tells Eda and Lilith about him grimwalker and wondering what it is and they tell him they'll do some research for him. They find a book explaining it and Eda decides it would cause some big emotional damage and she wants to protect her child.
Soon enough Hunter finds it and starts going into a panic attack/shock, similar to the end of hollow mind. Eda and Luz find him in the living room and ask what's up before he mutters something like "I'm not real." And runs off into the woods, Luz is like "Eda, wtf?" So Eda explains what a grimwalker is and Luz gets kinda mad she didn't tell them.
Hunter has just kept running through the woods until he stumbles upon the bat queen and her little colony of abandoned palismen (Palismen wood is an ingredient in grimwalkers so they hit it off). They have a little heart to heart and enter Flapjack! Eda finds him and apologizes, they have a little moment and Flapjack becomes his palismen much to Hunter's shock.
Time skip but at some point Hunter is kidnapped by the Emperor's coven and forced to become the golden guard or else Belos will go after Luz and the owl house. Hunter forces Flapjack to go live at the owl house until he figures a way out, but Flapjack visits him anyways. Eventually Luz corners him in town and he has to explain where he's been, why he's been gone, what the hell he thinks he's doing, and why he can't go back. At this point he's kind of become friends with Darius, Raine and Eberwolf so they let him in on the rebellion.
On some other mission where he encounters Luz and her friends, Luz gets really worried for him because he's got some lovely eye bags and a chip in his ear, probably some other injuries from Belos and a coven brand (much to his distaste) but he's still like "I'm fine, I'm in on a rebellion, I get info from Belos and relay it back to the rebels, I'm a spy, it's all good." But it's not all good our boy is developing some emotional damage from Belos' manipulation.
Soon enough when Belos has one of his goopy mud tantrums and Hunter is like "if you let me try to help-" but he gets pretty badly injured. When Darius checks on him he nearly passes out while he's trying to take care of some of his injuries. Raine and Darius decide to take him to the Owl House because they decide he is done being a little spy, it's too dangerous and he's a literal child.
It's the middle of the night when Hunter is dropped off so Eda takes care of him and patches him up. In the morning Luz finds him brooding or whatever and they have a moment.
Hunter keeps his gloves on because he doesn't want to look at the scars he received from Belos or his coven brand (The dude never takes his gloves off and I'm making a reason for it). He also now has his famous scar on his cheek. He is also reunited with flapjack and now you can't separate them, don't even try.
That's all I have for now but lmk your thoughts and ideas of his involvements in certain episodes.

A Slightly Distorted Lens (Part 13)
  TOH Hunter/Golden Guard x reader
 Masks and Bets part thirteen.
(Lucky number thirteen, anyone?)
The links to the other parts are now at the bottom of the page.
*******
I stared at Hunter. Cinder. He remembers me as Cinder!
“Hunter…” I said, not sure what to do. “...I’m not Cinder, remember?” I finished gently.
  Something in his eyes flickered.
“..What?” He said, sounding drained and void and null all at once. He sighed, giving his post one final resigned glance before stepping out the door.
“Hunter, listen.” I said softly, leading him down to a bridge over one of the rivers. “You don’t remember me right now, but just know that you mean a lot to me. You knew me as Cinder once, yeah, but before that you knew me as someone entirely different. And as that someone different, I…I did a really bad thing to you.” I murmured, trying to be as honest as possible.
He seemed to be scanning my face, looking for another identity in his friend Cinder. Not seeing (Y/N).
I sighed and took his gloved hand, fidgeting with it as I spoke.
“I worked with you- you remember that?”
He nodded, still not saying anything. I pressed on. “We were like partners in crime back then.”
He met my eyes. “What changed?” he said softly, curiously. As though the idea of something changing was just a good old saturday cartoon plot- mildly interesting, but nothing worthwhile.
“I left.” I said gently. “I decided that Belos was wrong, so I left.”
His lack of reaction was almost scarier than if he had yelled at me.
“Belos isn’t wrong, Cinder, or whoever you are. He’s honorable, a good witch. But…” He sighed, looking away.
“For some reason, I have the suspicion that you’re also…a good witch. At least…I think you’re telling your truth. I believe that that’s what you believe.” He finished, squeezing my hand.
“...So…. you’re not mad at me?” I said in a small voice.
He half-smiled. “Nah. I may not remember you too well, but I know you aren’t lying. Besides…the coven is a lot to handle for some witches. It’s a lot of pressure, y’know? I wouldn’t have just anyone sign up…” He trailed off, starting to fidget with his gloves.
I nodded. “Yeah…remember the time they left us on a mountain alone? I nearly starved to death- I only survived because a few abandoned palismen saved me.”
“I liked the mountain trial…” He replied uncertainly.
“What about that time you and I were forced to kill a pod of innocent selkidomi?” I frowned.
“Oh, uh, yeah…I remember that….you cried. It was pouring out of your mask….” He swallowed shakily.
“The worst part was when he took my palisman.” I murmured. “He was a bat named Pip…”
  Flapjack chirped on Hunter’s shoulder.
“Oh yeah, speaking of which- I got a new palisman.” I smiled ruefully, pointing up at where the raven had perched above us. “Just finished carving her earlier today…but uh. Y’know. Still pretty sad”
“What’s her name?” He asked, looking up in awe.
“Thursday. She named herself.” I shrugged, smiling.
“Cool.” He breathed. He looked nervous though, and his eyebrows knit together in discomfort.
“You’re a strong witch, right?” He said, his tone shifting to something more urgent.
“Uh…yeah, kinda…” I answered, slightly taken aback by the change of topic.
“And yet…the coven wasn’t really your thing.” He whispered, looking more and more worried. “Thorns.”
“Cinder- er, whoever you are- what would you do if your friend gave you an awesome opportunity but it meant a ton of work that you didn’t ask for?”
“Oh, you mean like getting forced into the Emperor’s coven?” I said bluntly.
  “Er…yeah…”
“I’d be mad at myself for befriending someone like that, Hunter.” I said pointedly.
  “Oh…yeah…” He sputtered. “I- I’ve gotta go, (Y/N)- I made a mistake. I don’t know why I called you that-”
“No, that’s my name!” I grinned. “You know my name!”   He smiled more confidently now. “And I can’t wait to remember more. Now I’ve gotta go save my friends.”
I grinned, shaking his hand. “Heck yeah you do. Can I come with?”
He gave a firm nod, mounting his palisman. I followed suit, nudging him a bit as we rose off the ground on our respective staffs.
“We’ve got this, man.” I smirked.
  “I sure hope we do.”
“We do.” I said firmly. “We definitely do.”
*******
By the time we landed at the station, Darius had already picked up the flyer derby team. Left behind on the steps was a parcel wrapped in twine.
“We’re too late.” Hunter whispered, panic seeping into his voice as he tore it open. “My cloak. I…I guess he thinks I earned it” Hunter said dully. “We’re too late.”
“Not necessarily….” I grinned, pointing at the airship in the sky above us.
“Oh jeez, there’s no turning back now is there?” He murmured, staring at the ship.
I punched him gently. “Yea there is, but you’ll walk away feeling like a coward and lose any chance to regain your team’s trust. Plus they’ll be mad at me for hyping you up the other day- I can practically already hear Scarah saying ‘(Y/N), you have loser taste in friends! (Y/N), you really hung out with that kid? Ohmitian, (Y/N)’s opinion is trash!’ But uh yeah no, you could still back out.” I shrugged.
Hunter sighed. “I know, I know. You’re right. Let’s do this. Darius is gonna kill me.”
“There we go.” I smiled, giving him a quick hug.
He blushed, pulling away as he returned to his palisman. “You sure you want to come? It- it could get dangerous-”
“Counterpoint- you sure you want me to come? Our duo might kill your chance of looking like a badass anti hero who works alone-”
“Yes I definitely want you to come.” He said firmly. “I’ll look more badass if I’m working with someone who can actually do magic.”
“So there we go, I’m coming. Glad we could sort that out.” I smirked, hopping back onto my staff.
I hovered below the airship as Hunter prepared to teleport.
“Darius!” He yelled as he teleported onto the deck. I flew after him, landing as gracefully as I could on the deck.
Willow jumped up. “Now!” She commanded.
All of the team members jumped off the ship! I raced after them, staring over the edge, half aware of Darius and Hunter flanking me.
The plummeting team vanished in a puff of smoke. An illusion. I sighed with relief.
“Land the ship!” Yelled Willow from behind me. I whipped around to see all the team members jump down from the ship frame's beam.
“Wait!” Snapper Darius as Viney took over the wheel.
She smirked and pulled a random lever, and I winced as we slammed into the boiling sea. The team members  hopped out of the ship  with their staffs and tried to escape, but Darius blocked their path with an abomination.
He really does have dramatic tendencies. I smirked, shaking my head as Darius threatened the kids.
“Did you really think you could get away with endangering a Coven Head? Do you have any idea what I'm capable of?!” He yelled.
“WAIT!” Screamed Hunter, diving between Darius and the team.
“Out of my way, little prince.” Dairus sighed.
“No!” Hunter snapped. “I was mistaken. These four are insolent agitators who aren't fit for the Emperor's Coven.” He paused and swallowed. “And I'm unfit to wear the sigil of the Golden Guard.”
Hunter tossed the half-opened package onto the ground.
“You can go.” He said sadly, turning to Willow.
She hesitated. “Please, captain.” Hunter said softly.
  Willow lowered her staff, sighing.
“Let's move, team. We need to find a replacement. After all, it'll be 52 weeks before Caleb's next day off.”
I sighed, glancing back at them ruefully before joining Hunter.
Darius glared at him incredulously. “You... befriended them? And then you disobeyed me to protect them?!” Darius scowled, raising his scythe arm.
Hunter shut his eyes and recoiled  in fear. I squeezed his hand reassuringly, keeping my eyes open as Darius’s hand transformed back
“I'm impressed. I had you all wrong.” He said, patting Hunter’s head.
  “Huh?”
“You're what? Sixteen? It's about time you made connections besides the castle and Hotshot over here.” Darius smiled.
  “I don’t know, I am pretty awesome…” I pointed out, smiling.
“Still…” Darius summoned a scroll and dropped it into Hunter's hands.
“Oh dude, a Penstagram account!” I grinned. “That’s awesome!”
“But- but what about the recruiting mission?” Hunter spluttered.
Darius shrugged. “I was just gonna drop them off at Hexside. We have more than enough recruits, in my opinion.”
Hunter looked up. “Are you... gonna tell Belos about this?
Darius smiled. “Are you going to tell him about your secret palisman?... Magic or not, I think you'll make your predecessors proud.”
  He tossed Hunter the package.
“But you could still use a sewing lesson.”

hope this doesn’t get buried but do you think they’ll ever bring back the “unbreakable promise” between witches thing? Because why show it if they don’t use it again right?
I've been wondering about that too but I'm pretty sure it's an abandoned concept. Only used to add some stakes to a relatively mundane s1 episode plot. Cuz like. If they were planning on actually using it, wouldn't something like that be a common thing in the Boiling Isles? It seems like a convenient thing for laws and business etc. Wouldn't it be brought up just as often as palismen? Like I can't imagine why they wouldn't have brought it up once since Covention unless they never really had any plans for it at all. They never even elaborated on how the promise works. What happens if you break it? Are you physically capable of breaking it? What's the deal here?
Who knows? Not the writers. And in fairness, "Why show it if they never use it again?" applies to a lot of things in the show that they showed and then never used again. It's to be expected.
Also I'm like 90% sure it's based on the Unbreakable Vow from Harry Potter. And they only really use HP stuff as like passing references/jokes. We don't want that stuff relevant to the plot at this point. Even allusions to it leave a bad taste in your mouth nowadays. We're probably better off if they do forget about it.

This theory might be hot garbage because I’m as high as a kite rn, but I’m about to spit absolute facts:
What if witches are connected to palismen because paslistrom wood comes from trees that grow over witches’ graves. But like the tree takes hundreds of years to mature before they can be made into palismen. And palismen form a bond to the witches from their own bloodline, meaning the grave the tree was planted on.
Also there’s a theory I heard that the abandoned cemetery in Gravesfield was once a witch cemetery where witches from the demon realm would bury their dead. So what if they were cut off from the human realm at some point and lost the palistrom trees left in Gravesfield and that mixed with the over-harvesting of palistrom trees is why the wood is so rare and not as many witches have palismen— as well as Belos consuming them.
Witch speaking of (lol), is what made Belos as well as Hunter (who is MADE of palistrom wood) into partial witches. Belos consumes palismen souls and Hunter is made of palistrom wood (that grow from trees planted above witches’ graves). Belos is shown even as a young man in the Deadwardian Boiling Isles consuming palismen seemingly not long after killing his brother and presumably being cursed by Evelyn and trapped in the demon realm. Also at this time he has no connection to magic and also his ears are round like a human’s. But in the present day, Belos has pointed ears— maybe a sign of consuming palismen souls. Hunter—despite being a “clone” of Caleb who was 100% human as far as we know— has pointed ears like a witch despite having no innate magic. Pointed ears are shown to be a witch genetic much like having a bile sack that produces magic.
In conclusion, palismen are the souls of dead witches given a second life. This explains why they are their own magic source and why they bond with witches rather than being an independent entity like non-witch demons who are native to the demon realm, unlike witches who may have evolved from humans. But I digress 💅🏻✨

Super mega spoilers ahead for OwlHouse but: Luz is punished for being different. She gets treated like she’s a bad person just for being weird. She feels like her mum abandoned her basically because of that conformist camp. She feels alone in the world until she’s lured into the demon realm. It’s so much scarier and takes a lot of getting used to.
Her first week there she gets fooled by a loser demon into believing she’s some sort of powerful chosen one and then almost gets her and Eda killed over it. Just because she wanted to be special. Wanted to feel valued and appreciated and respected. She starts out learning that humans can’t ever do magic the way a witch can because their anatomy is so different.
She first learns a glyph when her and king think they’re about to die. She feels like a failure taking so long to learn other spells. Meanwhile Eda is getting overpowered by the curse, learning her own sister cursed her.
Luz destroys the only portal back to the human realm, trapping her away from home and away from her mother for what feels like it could be forever. No way to even contact her. And it didn’t even stop Belos from gaining access to the human realm. Then after almost getting turned to stone, Eda can’t even protect them since she can’t use magic anymore.
Luz feels like a failure yet again because she feels like a burden Eda can’t afford to take care of anymore. Then she fails at a heist and gets taken down by the Golden guard. She can’t bond with any palismen because she doesn’t even know who she wants to be or what she wants to do with her life.
She tries to build a door by following an old humans diaries but it gets built wrong and all fucked up. She finds out she’s been replaced at home and has to promise her mum she’ll never return to the demon realm after she comes home. She inadvertently helps Belos of the past get to the collector which is the only reason why he has so much power on the modern day to rule the boiling isles. They find out Hunter is a grimwalker.
People get put in so much danger. Friends get separated from their families on the day of unity. Luz almost gets petrified again. Eda and King are trapped on the isles with the collector. Luz and friend are trapped in the human realm away from their families with no hope of returning.
Luz blames herself yet again. Her shame at helping Belos is revealed and then Belos kills a beloved Palisman. She blames herself once they return to the isles to see what the collector has done.
She literally dies trying to save the collector from Titan fungus Belos. Her entire life is filled with misery and tragedy the entire season. That’s way more emotional baggage to deal with.

plz give us your opinions on the new toh ep queen <3
okay i apologize in advance bc i’m like almost done writing this while i add this disclaimer and i’m realizing it’s VERY ramble-y and my adhd brain keeps rapidly switching topics but i hope this makes sense HAHA
IT WAS GOOD! it wasn’t nearly as gut-wrenching as the last one but i do appreciate some good ship action (raeda and huntlow tugging on my heartstrings fr). a lot happened this episode and i feel like a big theme was character development and personal exploration, we saw that a lot with hunter, but most of all luz and willow! it makes me really happy to see luz get her palismen (palisman??) finally and string bean is so adorable! i was team snake btw so i’m happy with this outcome. a lot of people say that boscha was really annoying this ep but honestly i didn’t think so? i mean, she was a bit, but she’s clearly not a villain here; she’s just a traumatized mean girl teenager handling things badly. she’s developed some pretty bad abandonment issues from losing her grudgby team to the collector, and ended up taking those out on amity, which isn’t…great, but people are treating her worse than belos this episode lmao?? but ANYWAY i’m very happy to see hunter again <3 and i’m happy that his development is moving in a positive way. not everyone is happy about him having magic from flapjack, but i think it’s nice; it reinforces that flapjack is still with him, even if he’s not physically present, which is a nice sentiment. and like i am sorry he is going thru it or whatever but i MISSED him being an annoying angry boy,, and OH MY GOD “you mean a lot to me too” “cool, happy to help” KILL ME NOW?!?! THEY’RE SO ADORABLE.,,,, and i’m glad they focused on willow here too because it made me like her a lot more than i did previously. and ok going back to raeda the “i just like to come out and see raine” i don’t remember if that’s exactly what she says but eda literally risking being caught by the collector who still thinks she’s the owl beast just to see raine,, AND RAINE’S LOOK IN THE BEGINNING WHEN SHE GOES INTO HARPY MODE…… omg they’re in love. and i’m choosing to say raine is a lesbian bc it makes my heart happy. switching gears completely to camila,, just,,, in general,, her being a mother figure to so many of the kids and her conversation with luz to amity saying “you and luz are a lot alike”,, i love her so much i cannot believe there was a point in which she was controversial in the fandom. i’ve always been a camila defender. OKAY BUT THE ACTUAL EPISODE ANYWAY the collector is obviously being set up for a redemption arc of sorts; they’re really pushing the idea that he’s just a kid and doesn’t want to really hurt people, and it’s clear that he really did care about king (defending him from the coven head i forgot her name sorry lol, respecting his boundaries with his rabbit and not touching it, calling him his best friend, immediately not trusting belos when he said king has it out for him) and that’s why he’s taking his ‘betrayal’ so hard. i did NOT expect him to team up with belos ngl, i thought that this episode would be them defeating the collector and next ep would be belos, as like a first and final boss type of thing, but this is like. so much better lol. AND SOMEONE ON TWITTER POINTED THIS OUT BUT belos is ALWAYS looking down on people, specifically at hunter; there’s always a specific camera angle to showcase it, but in this episode, in his weakened state belos finally looks up at someone: caleb. belos has always been in a position of power in every relationship we’ve seen with him so far, EXCEPT for caleb. caleb is the only situation in which he’s been the dependent. which is really being showcased here and i liked the imagery,, and i’m curious as to why belos chose raine in particular? like obviously this is going to be used for some raeda plotline which i personally don’t mind actually but like. obvious excuse for ship angst is obvious. but i hope there’s some other reason than just “let’s make eda upset hehehehe” u know what i mean. oh and raine mullet,, pretty. if i had a nickel for every time belos possessed someone and they got a mullet i would have two nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice right.
i’m excited to see how things go with the collector next episode (new noceda sibling real?) and i’m excited to see king, eda and luz’s reunion! i really need eda and camila to meet like NOW. i also really hope that hunter is the one who gets the final blow on belos, like sorry to luz or whatever i know ur the protagonist and that’s your moment but he DESERVES it. and obviously luz isn’t going to stay in the human realm indefinitely but with her mom i’m wondering how they’ll work things out; maybe there will be a more stable portal and luz and camila will be able to pass through both worlds and visit as they please? or will camila just stay in the demon realm with luz? idk!!! i can’t wait for next episode but knowing we’re officially on our final hiatus and that the cast just finished recording for the last episode is also :’D a bit miserable. sad to see it go but excited at the same time

but fandoms are communities and fandoms are always defined by the worst people, even if it feels unfair. there's not any fan content or meta contradicting just evil akechi, its been years and this is what the fandom wants. that's what most people are saying. there's nothing making those people feel unwelcome in fandom, but they make others feel unwelcome.
Okay, I see what you're saying. But I dunno, maybe we're just in different sections of the fandom, but I haven't had the same experience as you. I've seen lots of fan content that favors a more balanced approach with Akechi and acknowledges both sides to his character. I've read popular fic with an interpretation similar to my own that gives Akechi a soft side while acknowledging his rough edges and giving him a place to belong with the Thieves and Akiren. That all exists. Maybe you just need to widen your scope a little, or find different people to hang out with?
I don't really care if people are going to "welcome" my interpretation of Akechi or not. I'm going to write meta about him and explain why he's special to me and what he means to me and I don't give a damn if sections of the fandom aren't happy with that.
I believe you may have left me another ask I left unanswered because I wasn't sure how to address it, but let me copy and paste some of what I left in the drafts.
Goro Akechi, and his dynamic with the P5 protagonist, are complex and dark and messy. Fan interpretations are going to allude to their past. Akechi literally tried to murder Akiren--their dynamic is inherently based on very dark concepts and incredibly complex and tragic emotions on both sides. Akechi himself is messed up. He’s a murderer who tried to kill the one person he ever grew attached to and killed many just to get revenge on one man because his own hatred for his father twisted him to a point beyond recognition. He’s desperate for belonging but he pushes away anyone once they get marginally close, and he’s not afraid to hurt people in the process.
If you have a problem with anything that alludes all of that, then I'm sorry to say you're just not going to like most of the content about Akechi. Fanart and fanfic are going to explore those aspects of his character.
That all said, I’m sorry if you’ve been made to feel unwelcome in the fandom. Use the block button--I’ve done that myself to someone who wouldn’t stop commenting on my posts about Akechi with blatant falsehoods about his character. And create your own experience. I’ve found lots of people who agree with me about Akechi and are creating content that’s sympathetic toward him. Most of them happen to be Shuake/Akeshu shippers (like myself) from what I’ve seen but I’m unsure if you’d be into that. (But for the record, it’s not all abusive.) You just gotta find the right people. Maybe you just haven’t found them yet.

the parallel between belos killing untold numbers of palismen to survive hundreds of years and hunter's palisman willingly giving up his life to save hunter after belos nearly kills him. so good. chef's kiss. curled up on floor sobbing.

unpopular opinion but i actually really like akechi's ugly ass black mask outfit; the stripes are iconic, it adds to his aesthetic of Absolute Cringelord Dumbass.

My #1 post of 2022
I'll see takes from time to time about people getting annoyed at the "uwu soft boy goro" interpretation of the character. This is nothing new, obviously, and setting aside that this ignores on-screen evidence, this interpretation completely misses a key aspect of his character and the game.
First of all, let me clarify: I agree Goro is a selfish person who does evil, even unforgivable things as the Black Mask.
But seeing Akechi's character as irredeemable or "outright evil" misses one of the key points to his character. Akechi is meant to represent what Joker could have become if he'd been alone. Not only that, but what any of the Thieves could have become if they'd been alone and let their hatred and trauma twist them into something vengeful and empty.
If Goro is just an inherently evil person then his character loses its power. He was a child and a victim and he did not have to become the person he did. All of the Thieves were capable of becoming like Goro had circumstance been different. He no longer serves his purpose in the narrative as Joker's antithesis if you take that part of his character away.
This means both that the Thieves have an inner dark side that could have gotten out of control had circumstances been different, and that Goro is capable, or at the very least was once capable, of being a good person. Goro is capable of Joker's goodness, just as Joker is capable of Goro's evil.
So yes. Goro is an assassin who has murdered many. And he is an uwu soft boi who deserved better.

A thought: so Lilith was allowed to keep her palisman throughout her time in the EC, becoming a high ranking member and even being identified by it at public events (the whole White Raven thing). Yet other members of the coven have their palismen confiscated and eaten by Belos — some (mainly the ones who wanted to join) presumably handed them over willingly because they’re Wild Magic, which the EC (and coven system in general) is very against. I’m sure there’s a reason yet to be revealed for why Lilith was allowed to keep hers, but I just wanna muse a bit on something specific I noticed
Her palisman was never allowed in “free-roaming mode” (for want of a better description). He was always in Staff Mode. Her palisman is never “let out” on screen until she left the coven, and I’m willing to bet that even off screen he wasn’t secretly bouncing around like Flapjack does
What if that was the standard when Lilith joined? That, in the past, members with palismen were allowed to keep them, but only as staffs. They weren’t taken from you unless as punishment (Belos would absolutely use abuse tactics like allowing you to keep your beloved pet/belonging/friend/tool/etc “out of the kindness of his heart,” but then use your love for them as a way to manipulate you). Shoot, what if Belos’s main source of palismen were abandoned (or otherwise ownerless) ones in the woods, and it was only recently that he’s turned to eating his closest followers’ palismen (worth considering that, while the Bat Queen has prolly always been majorly protective of stray palismen, the semi-recent birth of her own babies might’ve upped that overall protectiveness to a point that Belos could’ve been cut off)
Like, the Emperor’s Coven we see in Eda’s flashback was pretty chill, comparatively. They had child safety laws, IFWOT wasn’t life threateningly intense and was pretty difficultly-appropriate for teens still in school, and it seemed overall pretty approachable, even if the inside was still likely a dangerous cult. Terra did try to install “us vs them” mentality with her “covens vs wilds” stunt, and Lilith and Eda were likely not allowed to join together because they would have been a built in support system for each other, but you definitely get the impression that it was just on its way to nightmare
So yeah, that’s my headcanon: the EC, though always bad, slowly slipped into the absolute realm of awful it is today, and one thing affected by that slippery slope was whether members were allowed palismen. Lilith started out as a normal scout but at the time she joined, normal scouts were allowed to keep their palismen. As the years went by, Belos started enforcing rules that kept palismen in their staff forms and started taking them as punishment, before just taking them out right. However, since this coincided with Lilith rising through the ranks and eventually becoming the face of the Emperor’s Coven, she was allowed to keep her palisman to keep her loyal (and give Belos something to hold over her head). Once she left, she was allowed to let her palisman out for the first time in possibly over a decade

Philip being related to Dell theory
Spoilers for Elsewhere and Elsewhen
We all knew Belos and Philip were going to be the same person or closely related, so I’m sure this twist was something that we really didn’t see coming.
Anyways, we know that birds are a Clawthorne thing, and now we’ve seen all four of the Clawthornes have birds for palismen.
I really think that it is a possibility that Philip and Dell are related from what we know so far.
They both look similar enough (Philip and his brother were alive hundreds of years ago so there is a multi generational difference most likely). Plus, it’s more likely that Dell is a descendant of Philip’s brother, since Philip hates witches as we saw at the end of the episode.

Another thing I noticed was Dell’s palisman, specifically the scar across its face and how similar it was to Philip’s/Belos’s.

Philip was shown at the end of the episode already killing palismen for his own needs, and palismen flee when they feel threatened, so maybe at some point this palisman left Philip.
While Dell was good at carving palismen so it could be argued that he would have carved his own, he does know the Bat Queen who keeps abandoned palismen and he probably wouldn’t have carved his own as a teenager unless he had parents who also were knowledgeable about palismen.
Flapjack looks similar to the yellow palisman, almost like brother palismen in a way. They both have scars that look similar to current/past owners too.

If Philip and his brother both had palismen, it would make sense once one brother died, and the other starting killing palismen, that they would both many years later find Clawthornes, who are descendants of their pervious owners, to bond with.
Last piece of evidence I have for this theory would be the portal door, Eda finding the door barely buried in the ground when she barely left the house, so likely on her family’s property.
Philip made the door, and if they are related to him, it would make sense that they had the door somehow, though we don’t have all the details on how or why yet, considering the fact that Philip is Belos and still alive.
One of the problems I could see with this theory is the fact that the Clawthornes have been shown to be pretty powerful witches, Lilith and Eda both getting and opportunity to take a spot in the Emperor’s Coven, and their mother being shown to be powerful too.
If it has been all this time though, there may be other powerful ancestors that could be the reason the family is powerful too.
