It is reprehensible that they've separated Kpop out of the general Global category. That’s blatant segregation. What was the logic? Which countries qualify for global if not Korea? I mean, what the ever loving fuck is "Global Kpop"?

ok thank u so much for asking first of all because i feel like a lot of people over the years have been curious about this and instead of asking me abt my reasoning regarding anything to do w idle they kind of default to anon hate, so. DKLFGJKLDF

im gonna give background, i followed y/uqi predebut, since that video came out of her as a young trainee moving from china to korea and being a part of a series where trainees go up to strangers in the streets and ask them to listen to them sing to gauge some of the public reaction to them if they debut. she sang in front of this one particular girl who used to be a trainee herself but couldn't live with the pressure and kind of yearned for that dream still, i guess? anyway, she gave y/uqi a lot of advice that i feel really helped ground her and to this day i think she's actually the only or at the very least the most grounded member of idle. and the only one i actually have nothing against and would love to see thrive, because i sincerely think she would and i'll come on to that later.

the tldr version is that i don't agree with the rampant racism and cultural appropriation that they engage in from music videos to general looks to sounds and beats in their actual songs. it's a lot. i know kpop groups in general are very guilty of this and sometimes, not very often, when you tell them it's wrong they apologise and stop doing it. but idle fall under the same category as suju and m/amamoo in that they literally don't care that they're doing it, because they have seen and i believe apologised about it then continued to do the same thing. but my issue with them as a group wasn't ever really directed at specific members until miss s/oyeon's international fuck-up where she said she wants to make 'ethnic hip' music as basically her excuse of why she appropriates cultures.

i paid a lot more attention to their group behaviour after that and there was a time of hiatus where y/uqi and m/innie in particular were very chill and doing their own thing where they were extremely different from how they were when s/oyeon ruled over them. y/uqi went back to being the grounded, friendly, chaotic and generally nice person she was before with no issues or controversies and m/innie did also. i don't really care about the other two so i can't comment on them extensively but these two i paid attention to because i know i liked them from before. but miss s/oyeon?? well, she carried on the group controversies all on her own, lmao. more racism and cultural appropriation but this time she also blatantly plagiarised another producer's songs and released them, lied about asking for permission to recreate the song DOWN TO A T (the song is wave by a/teez btw). basically she admitted to stealing it without using so many words but continued to promote it and didn't give the credit that was due for her plagiarism. i think this was one of 3 (?) plagiarism accusations in the space of a few months. so she's very big on growth as an artist and thinks of herself as a big producer but ultimately all she does is steal the songs from smaller artists and smaller producers and pass it off as her own. obviously as a creative myself, i'm not ok with this and i think she's a poor excuse of an artist to do it. she doesn't deserve the title.

in the last couple of comebacks, she profited off m/arilyn m/onroe's death and image, which is disgusting to me. i don't care what excuse her fans think up to make it ok -- especially when this came out at the same time as 2 documentary series about m/arilyn and she was a huge subject of discussion globally again. so it was evidently a ploy for cash and probably a good stepping stone to s/oyeon trying to make ~empowering music~ for women. sadly all she's doing, if her lyrics are anything to go by, is promoting the exact stereotype of women that everybody else is trying to fight against. she's saying, it's ok for women to love themselves but creepy for them to engage in sex or for men to be physically attracted to them because that makes them perverts (nxde lyrics allude to this VERY heavily).

i also personally don't like the attempted profiting off lgbt fans with 'oh my god', which people made theories about BEFORE she publicly came out as saying that it represents love in all forms, and kept alluding to it AFTER to give fans something to talk about despite officially saying she doesn't want to limit it to homosexuality -- so, how was it a song for the gays then? it wasn't. she was going with the fan theory to get talked about. it's not a bad marketing strategy but it is vile from an actual gay person's point of view, and the fact that she backtracked officially to say it's not ABOUT anything specific while feeding into the ~ally~ delusions privately is disgusting to me, personally. and i'd get if it was taboo to the point of it being career-ending, but there are plenty of other kpop groups who have explicitly stated their videos or songs or dramas, or ANYTHING, are strictly in representation of lgbt love both before and after oh my god -- o/nlyoneof in particular.

more recently of course, the attempted dissing of rookie groups, however light -- those are children. you're a grown woman. if you want to write a disstrack, don't do it about people who are a decade your juniors, OR a decade your seniors. she dissed h/yuna and h/yojong in a song and then sent h/yuna a signed album this comeback. weird to me, even if there are no hard feelings. it's not about the action so much as the attitude with which she keeps doing those things. this is where my newfound m/innie dislike comes in too, because she recently PUBLICLY dissed i/ve for winning an award against idle despite the fact that idle had already won a similar award something like the day before or a few days before. but i think i'll get over it because i genuinely don't believe that that's her actual attitude, i think 100% it's s/oyeon's influence.

and my reasoning for THAT is y/uqi's recent interview, where she said she and s/oyeon don't get along virtually at all, and fight all the time. she (y/uqi) finds it funny and thinks it's a sign of being close and honest, which it can be -- but that's not a healthy relationship, period. if you can't talk to someone without arguing, you don't get along ever.. that's not a friendship. but it does in a sense bring me comfort because i hate the type of person s/oyeon is and the fact that y/uqi argues with her so much tells me that she's the polar opposite. furthermore y/uqi also mentioned wanting to be the leader in situations, and that just tells me everything i need to know re: how much they actually agree with s/oyeon's creative decisions for them as a group and perhaps as individuals too, since she's currently cube's favourite and has significantly more pull than anybody else at that company.

i know you asked about idle full group dislike but it does all come down to s/oyeon in the end, because i think all of this controversy and all this behaviour could've been avoided if somebody knocked her down a peg. but i think everything she does is shallow and performative at best, she's not a hard worker like everybody thinks she is, but she does see herself as a martyr in all aspects and i guess tries to capitalise off it. which ok, that's her business, but i think it's gross and unfair to drag the other girls down with her. nevertheless all her choices (that she's proud of, too, let's not forget) up to now have made the group as controversial as it is now and is why i dislike it so actively as a unit, even aside from the other individual members.

Thank you for your thoughts about my question concerning why BTS fans seem obsessed with what EXO members are doing even to the point they're complaining about Jin having to go serve yet Kai and Sehun don't and it's so stupid: Jin born in 1992, Kai and Sehun born in 1994. Make it make sense. Those are the only two left to enlist and they're not even 30 yet (global age) Anyway they keep up with EXO stats and unprompted will bring up BTS paved the way and EXO fans are "crying" about it lmao I am so confused because most EXO fans who aren't BTS fans don't give a fuck about what BTS is doing. Most of us are just waiting for a full group comeback, the first in almost 5 yrs lol if Lay is involved, that's even longer since we had an OT9 comeback. I just don't get the obsession they have needing to be concerned with what the "flops" are doing if BTS are so much more than Kpop according to a lot of them. It's so annoying to see the nonsense because even though I used to be a big BTS fan, I can honestly say i truly do not care what they're doing, or winning or anything like that. Why do army obsess over so-called flops? I think it's about validation. It makes them feel really good to make other groups of people ostensibly feel bad. They're not music fans (the ones you see behaving like this). They're people who are part of a cultish subculture that gains energy and attracts attention through different forms of bullying and manipulation. It will be interesting when someone makes a documentary about this.

Idk I'm a music fan. I listened to 1.2K different artists last year, which is actually low for me! I've been close to 1.5K before. Anyhow, I like to pay attention to different artists and enjoy what they have on offer. In fact I just caught up on Jackson Wang's Magic Man series and that shit is cray. Loving how balls-to-the-wall he went. I just don't think it's at all interesting to focus on streams or accolades. What I care about is how the music, and the performance since we're talking about Kpop here, hits me. In that sense I think it's good to keep up with different artists. What's not good is doing it just for a sense of superiority. That's not contributing to respectful environment in which art thrives. That's capitalistic nonsense that crushes creativity. It wasn't about promo HYBE never promotes stuff that doesn't bring them money and OSTs for kdramas usually give the biggest share to company behind the drama. What was weird to me was HYBE pushing for ost to be released at the worst time possible both for korean and american charts. While all other OSTs of that drama had normal release time and the company behind the artist is the one who decides that so yeah it was big hit/hybe behind that.

And the whole weird thing about his spotify page being unsearchable unverified and made at the same time OST dropped and not a week earlier like it is usually done. And when that same day his email and private information was leaked HYBE could only say " no comment". And how they didnt even tell him his song FRIENDS that he written and produced was featured in a marvel movie?? Idk that company shady af IMO.

And yeah of course HYBE is hoping to move attention (and money) to their other groups and projects because once BTS contract expires who knows will they renew it. So now BTS is doing commericals and games instead of music i'm not saying that i know what they want or whatever but from what they told us it seems to me they still want to do music and perform the most but for now they are stuck doing other stuff.

It's just very eye opening to me to see difference in promo and concepts between BTS and the other HYBE groups now. Gender is more of a social construct these days. If you are at least 25-33+ you arguably know regardless of what social backlash or pressures you would get from people /now/ that let's say from the 40s-2010, there was socially across the globe on a mainstream level no such thing as all of they/them/we/etc. This is all very complex and would take a documentary style deep dive, but all I am going to tell you is it's all right now a new shift and product of this Gen Z and other younger generations (most millennials too) ushering in a new era of the LGBTQ being equals to "cis" people. Cis globally especially in the professional relam was never a thing either, you were either male or female.

You're asking how can a man be a "they" this is all one individual's choosing. Basically they are saying that they are a male biologically and still identify as a male (loosely) but see their masculinity / femininity/ position in society as well as viewing themselves as either gender fluid or not specfically a man. I mean, deep down, I think I was a man in a past life and I could technically go by she / they / them cause of how I look. I easily get mistaken for a man due to my height I'm very tall for a woman and cause I'm tall I can carry more weight than most people combined, I have a wider and broader structure body wise than most women (not brolic or overly masculine) so I used to always get disprescted by pedestrians no matter HOW i presented myself publicly. I could be dressed up in head to toe pink kpop girl style outfits to HIGHLY show I am a female but still have some old ass punk or disrespectful poc passively call me a man just because of my height. She just nodded and went back to watching her favorite soap opera.

“It’s nice that you’re out of your room for once. Take some cookies from the kitchen so you’ll have something to eat in case you get hungry.”

… as an alibi to get away from your strict parents.

As soon as you left the door and made sure that you’re out of sight, you found the nearest public toilet and grabbed a whole other outfit from your backpack. The hoodie is replaced by a white, ruffled see-through blouse and you ditched the jeans for a tight skirt that’s at least four inches above your knees. You tousled your hair a little bit and put on some powder and tiny hint of lipstick before putting your facemask back on again.

It’s been a while since you’ve done an elaborate scheme like this. Your skills got a little bit rusty, but they always work.

Sometimes you wonder if you’re really meant to be lawyer or a criminal instead.

You stepped out of the toilet and blended right back into society.

Now all you have to do is find wherever the hell LJ is.

Jeno sat anxiously as he waited for you right inside the café. He’s on his fourth cup of coffee but it didn’t do anything to calm his nerves down (geez I wonder why).

You: I’m almost at the café.

He’s been staring at his phone the whole time. Once he received your message, which is a pic of you in the bathroom after the outfit change, he almost choked on his drink.

This message sent him on a panic as he turned his camera on to see how he looked. He did some minor adjustments to his hair and he wiped off his eyeglasses clean with the sleeves of his hoodie (which did nothing for him by the way) and then casually sat down and played it off cool like he hasn’t been waiting for you for over an hour.

On your perspective, you walked inside the café and looked around for LJ. Fortunately, there was only guy inside the café, twiddling with his phone on his hands and as he kept on peeking through the glass windows as if he’s looking for someone.

From afar, he actually looked really cute. His appearance, a shy, nerdy dude with glasses, looked way off from the fuckboy image that you expected him to have in reference to the messages that you’ve been getting from him.

It’s always the quiet ones that are kinky. You should know, you are one.

You walked over to his table and tapped his shoulders to get his attention.

He froze for a moment before he finally managed to turn around and face you.

“You’re actually here.”

“I know. I’m just as surprised as you are.”

Having nothing to do to pass the time, you paced back and forth in the room, finally sitting down once you realized that it looks way worse than you just tapping your foot. You folded your arms right across your chest, looking at the watch from time to time but the hands of the clock seem to be moving slower the more you stare at it.

You started to tense up again, eyes wide as you realized that he’s now right beside you, wrapping his arms around you as soon as he sat down. He leans over, soft lips coming into contact with your exposed neck and shoulders, landing small pecks all over.

You sat there breathless as he slowly ran his fingers to the side of your thighs, tracing circles at it while giving small, reassuring kisses on your neck and shoulders. It’s as if he’s asking you for your consent, waiting for you to open up to him before he makes a move.

He got his answer when you turned around to face him, running your fingers into his cheeks before cupping his face, your lips finally touching his. He moved in the same pace as earlier, slow and calculating. You got a bit impatient once again, biting his lower lips gently to let him know that he can do more.

He grabbed you by the waist and successfully placed you on top of him. The kiss got even more sloppy as you ran your hands through nape, then into his soft locks. His hands travelled once again, finger running through legs again, stopping as soon as he reached the hem of your skirt, flipping it up to reveal the thin lace material that barely covered your core. You went over to him and placed a sweet kiss on his lips.

“I promise to make it up to you next time, okay? I’d love to meet you again.”

You grabbed a paper bag from your backpack and handed it to him, waving as you bolted out the door.

After fixing his things, he sat down for a moment and took a quick peek inside the package that you left him.

It was a ziplock bag of full of cookies and a whole other treat.

You left him your two-piece lace lingerie.

Anyways, I've been seeing a lot of videos/posts in social medias (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Tumblr) about kpop idols. I just feel like majority of the kpop fandom community is legit toxic. I'm not saying that everyone is toxic but there are so many hateful comments/posts about idols. And it really is very discouraging because I've started to like kpop. Like I see these amazing back stories of how idols work so hard at a very young age to reach their dreams and yet, their reputations easily crumble with just one hateful comment. I know that there are some articles which are speaking the truth but there are also those which haven't been confirmed and people are already trusting the credibility of those hateful articles. And I hate the hypocrisy of how those people who turned against the idols suddenly say that they love their idols, they will protect their idols blah blah blah. Can people just keep in their minds that everyone, even the kpop idols, are not perfect? They also are human beings which make mistakes. Aren't these mistakes what makes us better? We learn from them and use them to live better. For these people to throw so much hate, is too damn frustrating. It's like they have never made a mistake in their lives. And all the effing fandom wars. Please, for the love of all good things, idols are friends with each other. Why taint a friendship between idols with all your hate? Why are you hating each other when you could support each other instead? Why not try to help other fandoms reach that global landscape so people over the world can appreciate the beauty of kpop?

I guess I just got fed up with all these issues that I've been seeing. I've been listening to songs from different kpop groups and I really like them. And when I start to like the group more and more, I keep seeing negative things about them especially fan-instigated wars. And really its very discouraging. The idol made me love them but the fandom made me leave. But I really want to support these idols and so I've told myself to focus on the groups and their music even if I'm not a full-pledged member of their fandoms. Its still kinda hard to ignore the issues though but hopefully I'll be able to overcome them.

Sorry about the long rant. I just got triggered when I was talking to someone and I asked her why she hated a certain group. And her reason was because the fandom hates them as well. I was like "What the fuck?!". The toxicity of all is too damn much. 😫😫😫

On another note, I was watching Kingdom and I've got to say Stray Kids really killed all of their performances. I've heard of em before but I wasn't really following the group. But the God's Ddu-du Ddu-du was probably one of the most epic things I've seen. And it made me think that SVT can actually pull off joining Kingdom as they are all-rounders. They have such great vocals, powerful performances, unbeatable synergy, and charismas that is on par (maybe greater than) with the other groups.

It’s so disheartening and makes me feel like shit even tho I’ve wanted to do it for ages and I don’t know if I should listen to the people in my life or just say fuck it and go for it

i think you should wait until we’re no longer in a global pandemic 💁🏽‍♀️ but other than that, it’s your life and life’s too short. if that’s the choice that will make you happy and your finances allow it, do it! just be prepared to hear “i told you so” if it doesn’t work out for some reason. but life is about trial and error anyway, so no harm in trying if that’s really what you want to do.

Let’s Talk For a Minute about Bang Chan (+Stays)

First of all, I have resurrected from the dead and have decided my first post back will be talking about the leader of Stray Kids, Christopher Bang, or Bang Chan.

(Note, I’m black. Just clearing that up now. And I know I may lose followers for this but fuck it, everyone has their views and opinions on it, and I at least wanna say my piece.)

The only reason I wanna say anything about this is because it’s making me anxious lmao.

But, anyways, if you don’t know, Chan is underfire for performing with cornrows and many people are calling it cultural appropriation.

My thoughts on the situation? It’s not.

Putting my feelings aside for Bang Chan and Stray Kids, I would say that if I had to see anyone in the Kpop community with cornrows... I wouldn’t want to. But I’m glad it was Bang Chan of most people.

Honestly, most, if not all, idols don’t have a say on what gets done to them, the only time they may get a choice is on hair color but that’s probably it. I believe Bang Chan didn’t get a say in the hairstyle but knew the backlash he’d receive. But this is the reason I’m not angry about it: Bang Chan respects the cultures and doesn’t belittle the culture, so a one time hairstyle like this won’t make me hate him.

One comment I read on YouTube kinda pissed me off: ‘cornrows + a rap song? He’s trying so hard to be black’

Although I’m aiming to remain unbiased, I will say one thing I admire about Bang Chan, 3racha, and Stray Kids is that they truly care about hip hop. Felix and Hyunjin may have been told they’d be placed in the rapper positions but 3racha is possibly the only JYP group with non-appointed rappers because they knew they loved rap, whether it be the lyricism or freedom of expression. Whatever. They didn’t need someone to tell them to become rappers, it was already their goal.

Other artist who are rappers, some genuine rappers with a true gift, couldn’t give less of a fuck about black culture but will use it for aesthetic and brownie points in the music community. Bang Chan is always actively trying to avoid having people feel like he doesn’t care, he’d probably even study day and night about the history of black people and global black culture (yes, there’s more to black culture than just what’s shown in America) just to make sure he doesn’t slip up.

To end my directionless rambling: his hairstyle wasn’t my cup of tea, highkey never wanna see it again, but it was a one time hairstyle that he would probably ask to never wear again and will surely apologize for. Don’t hound him about it because we know he will do it.

Now, my next rant:

STAYS!

Front and fucking center cause I got a whole lot to say about y’all!

Let me start by saying something I felt for a long ass time: As soon as Stray Kids debuted, Stays were proud to be “non-toxic” and “unproblematic” but became toxic just as fast as those words left their mouths.

The fandom is divided because of gatekeeping Stays that believe if you aren’t 100% riding Stray Kids dicks and supporting them through all slip ups, even the slip ups that upset you, then your place in the fandom is invalid.

And that’s not true.

Being a fan means to correct your idol when they fuck up and vice versa. Just because he’s your fave doesn’t mean you have to be on his dick 24/7 to be “loyal”. You want to be a non-toxic fan(dom)? Don’t enable your favorite group/artist when they do something wrong/controversial.

My big issue with Stays right now is that they aren’t taking in account of how some black Stays feel. Some black Stays don’t care about the hairstyle (I personally don’t care), but we respect the ones that do see a problem.

Black Stays: not every hairstyle or action resembling black culture is cultural appropriation.

Other black Stays: although you don’t care about the hairstyle, you can see how Bang Chan, someone who’s least likely to do anything like this, having that hairstyle could come as a shock to most Stays, please try to be considerate of that.

Non-black Stays: DON’T TRY TO ARGUE DOWN BLACK STAYS ABOUT THEIR FEELINGS ON THIS! I can’t stress that enough! You keep saying they’re overreacting and you don’t see a problem with it but it’s not your culture being used. You don’t see a problem because it doesn’t affect you. Cultural appropriation in Kpop has been going on for years so each time it happens, it’s a slap in the face to us. And, when you dismiss black Stays and even go as far as to say “just leave the fandom/you’re not a real Stay”, you’re shitting on the safe space Stray Kids created for Stays of all races, ages, ethnicities, religions, etc.

I guess I’ll end my rant here. It’s long? I know. It’s controversial? I know. You all hate me? Bitch same. But I won’t shy away from criticism, disagreement, etc., just wanted to get rid of some of my anxiety on this situation. 🤟🏽

Music is such a fucking strange trip for me right now. Especially Latin music. Like I grew up listening to a variety of music from vallenato, bachata, and reggaetón to latin pop, American pop, rock, kpop, etc but separately and in different stages of my life.

So naturally, never in a million years did I think that there would ever come a day where some of those genres would intersect. If you had told me that I would see the Jonas brothers, and Daddy Yankee (two from my childhood) in the same song, let alone in the same song with a Colombian singer, I would have never believed you. Well, with daddy Yankee yes, because he is a latin music legend, but the Jonas brothers? No. Not to mention a badass woman too.

If you had told me Camilo (winner of The X factor kids when I was little. Literally the crush of every girl my generation) was going to be on Billboard, I'd be like wut?

If you had told me Reik, the group that had 9 y/o me in my feelings, way before I even knew what those "feelings" were; are going to have a song with Super Junior I would have laughed. Same with Becky G and J-hope.

If you would have told me that the Latin Music scene was going to go this global and that Two Colombians (Jbalvin -who once performed at my school before he hit it big- and Maluma) were gonna be huge players in this, i may have not believed you. AND THAT SO MANY FEMALE ARTISTS WOULD BE KILLING IT TOO especially in the urban reggaetón area! From when I was little I only remember Ivy Queen (she is a queen)

(Two Colombians..well Nicky jam is loved in Colombia so three?) I still kinda have a crush on Jbalvin but it was peak at 6 am..the songs. (Random note one of my best friends works with audio equipment and they have been working with JB a lot, never actually seen him they just ship the things out to him. Anyway, his team, I guess, forgot they put a bunch of bras fans threw at him in a crate and shipped it back and my friend was like "tf we gonna do with these now? Who throws bras a people in this economy?" In their defense, they were not cute lacy expensive ones hahaha)

and honestly, let’s say a group does “challenge” bts... would bts even hate that? especially if they know the members? like, lots of armies were/are super mad about super m... but do you really think the bts members and the super m members have beef? i mean idk, maybe they do and i dont know about it, but in just some cursory google searches ive found stuff of them being on shows together, talking to each other, etc. at worst theyre just peers in the same industry, but at best they respect each other a lot lol. apparently jimin is close with taemin and kai, for instance.

are you not aware that there are lgbt+ people in all communities and all cultures? why is the automatic assumption that any group, especially an asian group, is speaking out ONLY to western audiences? last time i checked, lgbt people don’t only exist in the west. bts are speaking out to show their support for all lgbt members around the world, including the ones in their industry and their country. and how dare you downplay that significance for koreans living in korea and across the world as well? for me as a japanese american and a member of the lgbt community, it’s been amazing to see asian celebrities speaks out like this. 

i also have to call into question why you’re throwing this scrutiny at bts. would you react this same way if it was a western celebrity speaking out in this way? would you tell them to examine their own entertainment industry? because the same problems plague many other industries across the world and the fact that you’re making it pointedly about the kpop industry seems a little uhhh racially motivated. i’m not saying the kpop industry doesn’t have problems (it definitely does), but if you’re going to bring up those issues in kpop, you’re gonna have to address them in western entertainment as well. 

also everyone supports lgbt people these days?? it takes two seconds to realize that’s unequivocally untrue. 2017 saw the highest death rates due to violence for transgender people ever recorded and that’s only in the United States. in 2017, 445 lgbt peoples lost their lives in brazil marking another all time high for violence against the lgbt community. while there have been advances in laws around the world, the fight is nowhere close to being over and many drawbacks have occurred in the west as well. 

finally, the idea that a group or celebrity has to speak out for every single cause is a ridiculous expectation. bts’ love yourself campaign has raised over 1 million dollars to end violence against youths. they’re not perfect people, no celebrity is, and to condemn their support of one community and their efforts to use their popularity to support causes they believe because they didn’t speak out against other issues is really illogical. how is anyone allowed to improve the world if everyone is always wanting more and more from them?

That post (I'm assuming we're thinking of the same post) was just saying BTS is so big now they can't be contained in one genre/sphere. Kpop as a genre and industry is known to be one in which most artists don't have a lot of autonomy or artistic freedom. BTS might not be ABOVE kpop but they are Kpop PLUS a bunch of other things. I’m just concerned that you might have read a tad too much into that post. Yoongislilbutt (again, I assume you were talking about that post) is known for hyperbole. none of us has ever denied what yoongi said when he said kpop isn’t enough to encompass bts because he’s absolutely right, it’s not. what bts has achieved HAS in fact, gone BEYOND just kpop but it is absolutely, not ABOVE kpop. that implies bts is too good for kpop which is literally so racist when kpop literally just means Korean Pop. not to mention it strips bts, 7 korean men, of their basic identity. bts gained global recognition over the years with “kpop idols” hanging over their hands, and that means they had to overcome 10× as many cultural barriers as any artist from the western music industry has ever had to considering the stigma on the kpop industry you mentioned + the widespread racism and xenophobia prevalent in the former industry. but they did it anyway, all while dancing choreo and singing with elaborate stage outfits and concepts and all those things associated with kpop. for them to have achieved the success they have now, not only despite, but precisely because of how much they excelled at those things, only makes their success all the impressive and significant considering how much westerners have long sneered at kpop and viewed it only with condescension. the term kpop, although it only means pop music originating from korea, was literally used as an insult to class korean music beneath western music, and the vile implication of that was that any asian artist is inherently inferior to their western counterparts. bts took that title of “kpop” hanging over their heads and overcame all the barriers, transforming a term people mocked into a positive one now recognised as a global phenomenon. bts aren’t great because they’re above kpop, they’re great BECAUSE they’re a part of kpop and made it anyway. for fans to have been fine calling bts kpop idols before all this western validation, to now demand they be rid of such a title is saying that artistry doesn’t matter and that the only thing worth celebrating is western approval when it should be the direct opposite, the groundbreaking cultural significance of 7 boys with KOREAN ROOTS becoming the biggest band in the world. all this bts is above kpop nonsense is also Wrong because it implies kpop is a term to be used at the discretion of westerners to restrict the success of asian artists, imposed upon them to dismiss and belittle any success in markets other than european-dominated ones, only to be lifted when western approval is achieved, thus defining western validation as the peak, the epitome of success and reducing other cultures to nothing. bts fought so hard so they could make it despite the racism and xenophobia, they literally redefined kpop, transformed its meaning so it can now be used to empower korean artists to be proud of their cultural background and the cultural significance of their success instead of its previous associations with being a lesser form of music. by saying bts is above kpop, you are directly perpetuating those horrible stereotypes bts fought so hard to break free from and hindering the success of those who now walk on the road they have paved, reinforcing all the cruel racist and xenophobic sentiments that were directed towards them and redirecting them towards other korean artists, you are reversing all the progress they have made and its shameful. it’s also insulting as fuck to fellow pocs like me living outside of western countries for a bunch of ignorant people to basically tell us that the music we listen to, any media we consume that isn’t popular elsewhere outside our continent, is somehow lesser, and that only when it has been popularised in places like america and europe, does it “prove” itself to be worthy of recognition. like just imagine if a bollywood film suddenly received much global recognition, and a bunch of white critics start calling it “above” bollywood. do you see how incredibly fucked up that is?
