it doesn't seem like it'd make sense at first, but if you think about it, it's a quiet job, and sevika loves quiet. it's a way to help people, and i think deep down that's all sevika wants to do. she also loves reading, so it's perfect for her.

she loves helping people working on research projects. whether it's a kid doing their science fair project or a phd student scouring the shelves for an obscure academic publication. it's like a puzzle for her, scouring the shelves, searching the databases, helping someone find the answers they seek.

she swears she hates kids, but on thursday evenings she can be found reading aloud to the kids who come in for after school activities. the material isn't always appropriate for school aged children-- murder mysteries and horror stories-- but the kids love it and sevika tries to censor herself when she can remember.

she's a huge advocate for all the free services the library offers. always tells people about the electronics available for checkout, the job fairs they host every month.

you come into the library after moving to town, looking to get a new library card for your new city.

sevika's eager to clock out and go home, but she sees you waiting at the tail end of a long line of people wanting to check out books, and she sits her ass right back down in her rolling chair.

when you finally get to the front of the line, sevika gets tongue tied and flustered trying to help you.

you think she's cute, stumbling over her words and repeating your name under her breath when you give it to her.

you notice the little lesbian flag in her pen holder and grin.

"is that yours or is this a co-workers desk?" you ask, nodding to the flag. she chokes.

"m-mine." she grunts out. you grin.

"cool." you say. you pull your keys out of your back pocket, showing her your own pride keychain. "me too." you say. sevika gawks at you for nearly a full minute before she manages to pull her eyes back down to the screen in front of her.

she finishes printing and magnetizing your card, handing it over to you.

"you don't need my number?" you ask. sevika shakes her head no.

"your address and email are enough for a library c--"

"not for the card." you say. sevika freezes. you shrug. "sorry. thought we were flirting a bit." you say, embarrassed, collecting your new card and turning to leave.

"wait!" sevika shouts, scrambling to reach over the desk and grab your wrist. "yes. please. i'll take your number. if you want... to... give it to me." she finishes awkwardly. you grin, and grab a sharpie from her pen holder, jotting your number down on her hand.

she watches you go, ignoring the next customer until you're out of sight.

the first thing she does once you're gone is program your number into her phone, holding a finger up in a 'one second' motion to the patron standing before her.

she gets shit from him for being so slow, but it doesn't even bother her. nothing can bring her down now that she's got your number.

Batfam Retail and Character Agency

So I've been thinking about how some people take issue with certain ships in the Batfam, especially in fanfic or general fanon. For example, JaySteph and how people will cry "ince$t" when these two or other characters are paired up in a ship.

One, I don't think these people know how biology/ancestry works because the only blood related members of the Batfam are Bruce, Damian, and Kate Kane despite them being called the BatFAM. Two, most of Bruce's adopted children were older or barely interacted in a sibling way as far as growing up together. Sure, they might have a sibling-coded relationship and are legally related, but the best example I can think of in how the Batfam works is not the Brady Bunch or Cheaper by the Dozen, but that they all are or have been co-workers at the same minimum wage retail store. Friendships, drama, dating, rivalries, and other such nonsense is sure to happen. It's called forced proximity and shared experience.

I'm thinking of writing up a humorous parallel of who's who in the retail realm when it comes to the Batfam, but including it here would make this post WAY too long

The other annoyance, that I sort of get IF looked at from the POV of DC editorial or writers (if that's their ill-conceived intention), is the idea that a character, more specifically a female character, is just getting "passed around". Instead, my only guess is that whoever is complaining about this is saying that the male character should be given a new, shiny, fresh off the showroom floor love interest and not some high-mileage used model. I use a car reference here because that's exactly how that female is seen when a person says this, whether they acknowledge it or not.

The female character, for example: Stephanie Brown, is no longer a person with her own autonomy and ability to choose or have agency. She's an object to be owned, possessed, or used for the sake of forwarding the male character's arc or to add drama (e.g. fridging or damsel in distress). To imply that Stephanie Brown (or any other character) is being "passed around" from Tim Drake to Jason Todd is to imply that Steph doesn't have nor did she ever have choice in the matter (again, JaySteph isn't even canon, but if it were to become canon, some people would still have a fit). And yes, these are fictional characters, but in writing them (whether officially by DC or in fanfics) they should be treated as real people with real choices and not some object or virginal "bride" for the male protagonist where you'd retcon past relationships.

Has Stephanie Brown always been treated fairly in comics? No. Has Jason? Also, no. Would pairing these two be some sort of "passing around" or "sloppy seconds" for Jason? If I have to answer that for you or you think 'Yes', then you probably don't see women as people. Canonically, I think Jason has had more love interests so if anything Steph would be the one getting someone else's "sloppy seconds", thirds, fourths, etc.

Again, see the above about retail co-workers. Steph once dated Tim. It was their first job and their first real, young love. It was good, it was bad, they made out in the break room, they broke up in the middle of Customer Service, etc. Former employee, Jason, comes by and picks up random shifts when Bruce is really desperate. Steph and Jason meet and hang-out over a few shifts, even though Bruce doesn't trust either of them and would rather they work somewhere else. Maybe they got stuck working Black Friday and the holidays together and boom, sparks happened. It's maybe weird or awkward for Tim, but Tim fell in love with the snack and soda machine vendor, Bernard, so it's really no big deal.

So if someone can date their co-worker, break-up, and then date another co-worker, it should be none of your damn business (assuming everything is legal, consenting, and above board) if none of those people are you.

All the attention in Washington is on the looming government shutdown, and understandably so.

Barring a last-minute spending agreement on Capitol Hill ― which is to say, barring a last-minute outburst of sanity by the extremist House Republicans preventing an agreement ― the federal government will officially run out of spending authority at 11:59 p.m. Saturday night.

Agency workers will be furloughed, except for members of the military, air traffic controllers and other essential employees who will have to work without pay. And while the federal government will keep issuing checks for automatic entitlements like Social Security, within a few days it will have to cut off funds for the Women, Infants and Children system that provides food benefits to 7 million low-income Americans. A prolonged shutdown would affect still more federal services, and likely deal a blow to the economy as well. But whether or not a shutdown happens, and however long it lasts, a whole other kind of fiscal shock is about to hit the country. And while its effects will materialize more slowly than the shutdown’s, they could be more long-lasting.

I’m talking about the end of billions in emergency funding for child care that the federal government has been providing since 2021, as part of its COVID-19 relief efforts. The money was a lifeline for providers who were getting hammered, first by a decline in customers because of illness and public health closures and since then by the need to pay the higher wages it takes to compete for workers in a tighter labor market.

That money also runs out at midnight Saturday, creating what has come to be known in Washington as the “child care funding cliff.” The term is slightly misleading: Because of the way the disbursements move from the U.S. Treasury to states and then to individual providers, the effect will be gradual. But it will be real and it will likely be significant, because providers still need money. They and the families that rely on them were struggling even before the pandemic, because of the inescapable, seemingly paradoxical economics of child care: Reliable, quality programs require salaries high enough to attract and keep talented workers, but the tuition and fees to support those salaries are more than many families can afford on their own. And the gap is probably even bigger now than it was a few years ago.

In that sense, the emergency funding was more like a Band-Aid on a wound that had been bleeding for a while and is still bleeding now. With no more Band-Aid — i.e., no more emergency funding — providers will react by reducing hours or staff, or charging more to families that are already struggling to pay, or shutting down altogether.

Predicting the precise impact is difficult, because the child care market is in such flux. A widely cited estimate by The Century Foundation says the end result could be as many as 3.2 million fewer child care slots. Critics say that’s wildly inflated.

But whichever view is closer to reality, it’s hard to imagine so much money coming out of the sector without providers and families feeling it. The economy could take a hit too, if affected parents cut back their own working hours or drop out of the labor force, though it’s likely many would simply return to more stressful double shifts as workers and caregivers — in other words, a replay of what happened to so many at the peak of the pandemic.

Precisely because it will take a while for the federal money to stop working its way through to providers, Congress still has some time to approve new funding, as Democratic leaders and their allies have been proposing with increasing urgency. But they won’t prevail unless even more elected officials — and the public at large — come to see child care as the kind of national priority the U.S. has never made it.

26. How does your character behave around children?

Nick has a pretty big soft spot for kids and feels very protective over them, whether they’re little or teenagers. Appearances and history of military experience factored in, he knows he can come across as intimidating and scary if he was careless about his own behavior, so he tries to counteract it by projecting a lot of calm, patient, and quiet energy … pretty much the same way he behaves with horses, and Lucky tbh.

The wasteland being the wasteland, some of the kids he’s met were trying to kill or rob him. His soft spot is extra wide in these cases because he’s pretty keenly aware of how bad being in that situation when he was their age fucked him up and deteriorated his relationship with his own life and future, so he’s more willing to put himself in danger to ‘real talk’ them out of fighting him than in any other situation.

40. How does your character treat service workers

Unfortunately it’s a mixed bag. Lucky has empathy for people in the service industry because he can commiserate with their experience of employment being a mailman himself, and before being shot in the head he used to be more gracious towards most people in most cases.

After the head injury … he lacks introspection and self awareness about his behavior and how he comes across, so he can be blunt, entitled, and immature fully without realizing it and for no gain whatsoever. He just doesn’t have the tools anymore to taste words before they’re out of his mouth. Being a customer would only exacerbate this, and he’ll need to be taken out by the scruff by his ~bodyguard~ and told flatly he’s being a dick ( and how ) before he starts behaving better towards people he wants things from.

I think it's kind of fascinating the way language changes, and how words and phrases change over time. I think it's interesting how society has twisted certain sayings in particular.

Like these ones:

The customer is always right.

It has come to defend customers being abusive to employees and basically allowed to do and say whatever they want, because they're the one buying stuff and contributing to the business or some such bull. The actual saying was:

"The customer is always right in matters of taste"

Meaning that the customer knows what they want. If the customer is willing to buy it, then you should sell it. If no one is buying the product, you have to either change the product, find a new product, or find a new target market. It was more of a business marketing statement. It was never intended to allow people to bully and abuse customer service workers.

Jack of all trades

This one has sort of navigated back to its original tone, at least the way I've seen it used lately. But it did wonder for a while to the derogatory,

"Jack of all trades, master of none"

Meaning, as I perceived it, to say that sure you can do a few things but none of it good enough to be worth anything. The actual saying is:

"Jack of all trades, master of none, but still better than a master of one"

Meaning, it is better to know how to do a bunch of things well, than one thing perfectly. Which works for physical and intellectual topics. If you know a little about a variety of things you are better equipped to confidently take on the problems or tasks presented to you. Which is pretty neat. It also reminds me of a saying my greataunt always used, which was, 'it's good enough for government work.' Which is to say, maybe it's not perfect, but it gets the job done.'

Curiosity killed the cat

This one can be seen as somewhat sinister, especially in the context of its original quote. This shortened phrase had been used as a cautionary statement to say 'don't ask.' It has been used by some as an attempt to ward people from questioning things, people, and events. I haven't heard it too often lately, but I used to when I was younger. Although, I think some people used it on kids with good intentions, especially when saying it to young children as a way too keep them out of trouble or danger. Similar to the 'stranger danger' thing, which is how i remember it being used for me. But I have a feeling that this wasn’t the case for everyone. The actual saying was:

"Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back"

To me, it means we should always keep asking questions, even if it makes some people uncomfortable. Always keep thinking and discussing, discovering and learning, seeking the truth. Every good answer should lead to another question. Learning is always satisfying, whether it's about societies or history or mechanics or the science of stars or biology or whatever.

I think the quote can be used as a caution, but in a good way. Sometimes asking questions can be dangerous. Certain fields require work in dangerous environments and situations. Some Scientists and Journalists, in the past and present, literally put their lives on the line for knowledge. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't ask those questions and search for the answers.

It was supposed to be inspirational and driving. It wasn’t originally meant as a cautionary statement. It was supposed to inspire questions, not prevent them. I love this quote, because I love knowing stuff and understanding how things work. And I think knowing the truth of how things happen and why things work is extremely important. I always thought the shortened quote was kinda dumb, even as a kid.

I just thought it was really interesting. Language is wierd, but pretty cool. How society and language interact, I think, is endlessly fascinating. I think this is termed 'etymology' the science of language and how it works and changes over time. Which is really cool!

When can I drop off donations?

You can drop off donations throughout our opening hours – Monday to Saturday between 9 am and 4 pm. We do ask that you refrain from leaving items outside the hub when we are closed as they are likely to get damaged and we are unable to sell them.

Do you accept electricals?

We do accept most electrical items in working condition. There are a few exceptions to the electrical items you can donate, such as printers, which we cannot accept. If you are unsure whether we can accept your donation, please do not hesitate to give us a call on 01226 240 908.

Do you accept furniture?

For all furniture items – small or large- we ask that you please give us a call on 01226 240 908 and send us a photo before donating to the hub via our Facebook page. This helps us establish what we have room for and whether it is in saleable condition, which means we don’t have to turn anyone away when they arrive with their items!

Please note, all soft furnishings must come with the fire retardant label intact. Due to limited space in our warehouse, we may have to decline furniture items – we hope you understand.

Do you accept broken items?

Please refrain from bringing broken items to the hub. Disposing of these items comes at a cost to us, which means less money goes toward funding the specialist palliative care Barnsley Hospice provides. The only exception to this is clothes that can be ragged, which we are happy to recycle.

What is your full name as per your official identification:

We at Helper4U take the name on Aadhar Card as we use the Aadhar card for verification purposes. The purpose of this question is to have full information on the person in the case of any mishappening. You should know the name by which the person can be traced. If possible, check their identification at the time of interview itself.

What is your age:

This is important since you may want a younger, energetic person or an older, more supervisory sort of a person. Age will also tell you for how long the person will be able to do the work you want them to do, and, what will be the roles and responsibilities of the person. This question will also help you ensure that you do not hire an underage person. Also, you will have an idea if the person will soon decide to get married, or have children. All these will help you make the right hiring decision.

Are you married:

This will tell you what kind of responsibilities the person has at home? If married and with kids, the person may need time to take care of responsibilities at home, like dropping the child to school, picking them up. You may need to factor in for sickness of the child and other similar things and occurrences. It will also tell you if the person you are hiring as a nanny is experienced in taking care of a child or not.
