any tips on BSing my way through an oral exam in my non-native language? i am in a higher class level than i should be so everyone’s like… fluent and i’m just there. i trust you with my life, do you have any tips for faking confidence + proficiency? 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

you shouldn't trust me at all. that being said I know a thing or two about faking things ^—^ and I used to be a language instructor so here's some tips:

if you have classes left, Speak in class. it's okay if you're wrong. if you're discussing a text in class, raise your hand and bring up a point. (if you're scared of looking dumb, look the text up online, use a scholar's point) as long as your professor Knows Your Face. this is important, esp in oral exams, you want your professor to remember you out of a class of 45. they're more likely to be lenient. in fact, if they have consultation hours, just show up with whatever you have a problem with. do not let shyness or fear of other people being better stop you from accessing all the help and resources you can get!

for the exam itself, get a friend who is fluent and talk to them! have them correct you. doesn't need to be exam material, just so you have the confidence of speaking it causally. if you can practice for the exam, that's even better! but try it make that language something you're engaging with in your free time, like watch a movie or read a book/articles, just so you're in a state of familiarity.

for language proficiency, it matters if you're confident even if you stumble grammatically, over someone who Knows how to say it but stutters/goes "uhh...umm." this is a protip, when you find yourself going "umm" just stay quiet. it's much better to take a pause "what Foucault meant in this text .... is," and gather your thoughts than use filler words like, like. instead of I guess/I think, try for "in my opinion" which is the same thing but it sounds more Assured.

now most importantly, for the exam itself.

WRITE A SCRIPT AND PRACTICE IT. it doesn't have to be the actual exam paper obv lol, but if you know what kind of questions are coming or what topic it might focus on, or even what previous seniors' questions were on, write a script and then practice it. time yourself. do the first couple of runs reading it, and then see if you can explain the concept without needing to look at it. do not memorize it! make it your own, just until you feel comfortable enough.

you don't need to be perfect, or fluent, you need to show you have a level of understanding. and you don't need to understand the entire intricacies of the language! only the syllabus that's focused for your class. what teachers are grading on is how much you've Understood, as opposed to reciting to perfection.

the more prepared you are, the more confident you will feel. finally, it does not matter if other people are less or more fluent than you. there will always be someone better. you are only in competition with yourself, can you be better than the level you are right now?

and this is just what I do, but I dress really slay during exams, so that way even if it goes badly I can't feel As Bad in a bombastic fit. get enough sleep, be hydrated, shower, wear an outfit you like, and know you have done all that you could.

The idea that uni protesters are "elitist ivy-league rich kids larping as revolutionaries" on Twitter and Reddit and even here is so fucking funny to me if you actually know anything about the student bodies at these unis. Take it from someone who's going to one of the biggest private unis in the US, 80% of the peers I know are either from the suburbs or an apartment somewhere in America, children of immigrants, or here on a student visa. I've heard about one-percenter students, but I've never met one in person. Like, don't get me wrong, the institution as a whole is still very privileged and white. I've talked with friends and classmates about feeling weird or dissonant being here and coming from such a different background. But in my art program, I see BIPOC, disabled, queer, lower-income students and faculty trying to deconstruct and tear that down and make space every day. So to take a cursory glance at a crowd of student protesters in coalitions that are led by BIPOC & 1st/2nd-gen immigrant students and HQ'd in ethnic housings and student organizations and say, "ah. children of the elite." Get real.

#also idk how to tell you this but even if it were true. wealthy children potentially sacrificing their educational careers to protest is #a good thing actually. idk how to tell you that caring about people from other nations is good #personal #“this war has nothing to do with most students cuz nobody's getting drafted” idk how to explain to you that we should be angry #that our tuitions of 10s of thousands of dollars that we pay every year for an education is being used to fund a genocidal campaign #also the implication that if you go to a uni institution you are automatically privileged by participation no matter your bg #i didn't /want/ to go to this school. i was supposed to go to a school with an art/animation program. but i realized my immigrant #parents have been working their whole lives to get me here. and turning the opportunity down would be a disservice to their sacrifice #this is getting into convos of “what 2nd gen kids owe their parents” which is different for everyone but. yeah #i just get pissed off at seeing people misrepresenting student bodies as “wealthy” and “privileged” and “elite” when it's such a blatant li #i remember a year ago a friend told me they can't fly home to hong kong for winter break because the plane tickets are too expensive #so they have to find temporary housing around the area #last quarter for a film doc class my film partner made a doc on a small group of marxist grad students from india discussing praxis #during a rally a few months ago in response to police presence the coalition invited palestinian students to speak about their experiences #and lead songs and read poems they wrote. these are STUDENTS. are they elitist too?#this is not to disregard my own personal privilege either.#this whole narrative's just to rationalize a lack of empathy to me. seeing a 19yo student get shot by a rubber bullet and your first #reaction is “HAW! HAW! bet richy rich didn't see THAT coming when she put on her terrorist hood!”#newsflash. these big uni campuses are HAUNTED by the violence of past protests and revolutions and police brutality. we know.#why do you think these coalitions have been making reinforced barricades at record speed

had a really incredible moment this evening. went to my campus art market where one of my friends was selling the tank top i'm wearing - another friend bought it for me and i'm so overjoyed to have it. usually a fit that leans more Traditionally Masculine feels like a costume but tonight it just felt deeply correct and honest and warm. took the opportunity to take some indulgent little pictures because i do not think i have Ever looked more like myself. so happy.

dunno how to articulate my thoughts without sounding mean but i'll try my best; it's so exciting when jh tries a new color and it's also exciting when he also seems to be enjoying it, but i think a problem in fandom culture in general is that need to have ownership over your [thing you like], in this case, jh, a real person. like you can be sad that jh is losing or toning down his purple hair because it was a good color and he looks good, but also at the end of the day it's his hair on his head and what he wants to do w his hair is his business only.

i say this because jh said in the latest radio station that he is going to tone down his purple hair in a few days, not because he doesnt like the color, but because his hair grows outward, a common thing that happens with your hair when you are of asian or hispanic descent. he needs down perms to literally "put down" the hair instead of it sticking straight out of his head. and down perms can fuck with the color if it's dyed.

so with this in mind, jh keeps his hair "boring" and black because he would rather his hair not be sticking straight out of his head and he doesnt want to sacrifice more time at the salon for color correction when it can just be his natural color. and thats really valid of him, just as it's valid of any other member or kpop idol to constantly dye their hair. it's his choice just like theirs and fans should respect his choice more.

#like idk just in general people make comments about jh being boring just bc he dresses a certain way and has his hair a certain way #and it's annoying to me. bc it's his business only. hes wonderful exactly how he is. u should not pressure him to do something hes uncomfy #and u can prefer a more flashy idol but that doesnt mean that automatically jh's own self expression is 'bad'#hope i dont sound like a bitch but i wanted to post this bc of jh saying hes going to change his hair soon #apple lady words #i feel like this all comes back to nuance bc u can love his different hair but dont make it seem like hes boring if hes not going out of hi #comfort zone #and ik most fans respect him but some fans come across as 'owning' him and feeling like they have the final say in regard to his body #which is what i have a problem with #maybe im making a mountain out of a mole hill or this isnt even a problem #but idk. posting it. oh well #edit: this is directed at nobody

i know hoyo is setting up rhine to have good intent and whatever in her trying to 'save' khaneri'ah or whatever; but i REALLY hope they stay with the cruel persona thats been built up for her. because it would be so wonderful to see a character who had good intent in the beginning just get absolutely corrupted; with the inability to ever go back to that prior state purely because of what had happened. also because there is NO way in her turning back after all that shit

having some Thoughts N Feelings abt elrond & elros + the historical practice of rulers taking children from the families of their tributaries or even their (nominal) allies as hostages

primarily that (1) the Politics of the Fëanorions having the heirs of Fingolfin AND Thingol AND All Three of the Three Houses as their hostages is like… soooo overlooked and underutilized in the fanworks I’ve seen

and (2) i think it would be rlly funny and also fucked-up if most elves are Totally Scandalized And Horrified by this Weird Human Behavior of “hostage-taking” if/when they see it happening in the second & third ages as human settlements & societies in M-E grow & develop, while Elrond is just like, “this is Normal, what are you Talking about”

i am really not having fun watching qsmp at all at the moment the administration has been horrible its soooo disorganised and nonsensical and misguided

Honestly at this point I think I'll never get into a relationship. Not in a self-deprecating way or even because of my social anxiety, but because then I'd have to be open about being a lesbian.

What scares me so much about that, you ask? I DON'T KNOW. I wish I knew.

Seriously why does DoorDash recommend such completely random tip amounts

#doordash: would you like to tip your dasher $3.50?#me: *squints*#me: *opens calculator app*#*20% of order total is $4.85*#like they couldnt even recommend $4.50?#it wasnt even one of the easy click options. the options were $3 $3.50 and $4 #so then i have to open up the thing and manually type in $4.85 #and all the while the doordash app is assuming im planning on not tipping and guilting me for it #which is fucking rich coming from them #actually i usually tip in cash but i saw one of those posts where some delivery person is flexing about ruining someones food #because they didnt tip through the app and they assumed they werent going to tip at all #and it made me paranoid #i know most people arent like that but it scares me #i really do prefer tipping in cash because these services cant be trusted to pass on the tips #and also i think it should be up to the individual whether or not they want to report the tip as income tbh #anyway back to the point of suggested tip amounts #someone once told me that they went to a bunch of different restaurants and did the math on their pinpads recommended tip amounts #and those werent accurate either #varied whether they were more or less but they were usually not correct #anyway its super easy to figure out how much to tip for yourself #pull up the calculator app on your phone and multiply your order total by 0.2 for 20%#i promise nobody will think youre weird for using a calculator. its super normal

was gonna make a post bitching about how being a princess of heart works but then i remembered the whole union cross 'the 13 darknesses are sentient' thing and came up with my own theories but ive looped back around to being mad again. goddd why does shit actually work when you think about it im so mad
