Bdubs' typing style

saw a post that i felt did Not describe bdubs' typing habits correctly at all so i needed to make a post about it.

OLD typing style (like 2011 early years) bdubs kinda sucked at typing and grammar lol. He was a slow typer and spelled stuff wrong a lot (mostly big words. he would often voice how he didnt know how to spell sometimes as he did it. and then he'd spell it wrong lol). would type abbreviations too like bbl, brb, lol, np, etc. Sometimes he would type ones like "lol" in all caps. He would also shorten some words/spell them an alternate way like "gunna" instead of "gonna" or "lil" instead of "little"

He didn't really use emotes too much other than a basic :) or ;) usually. you could maybe throw in a :P or :D if you wanted but i mostly see the former.

He would not use other punctuation like apostrophes much if at all, sometimes use commas where needed, and not capitalize his sentences. would use periods if typing more than one sentence in the same message, and using question marks where needed, and sometimes exclamation marks if he felt the need (sometimes more than one if hes "mad"). he'd even use "..." in his sentences (usually without a space between words).

NEW typing style- Bdubs is technically better at typing (lol). One of the issues with new videos though in order to find chat messages is that people often cut out any kind of chatting in edited videos. But i will describe what i can based off what we do see- (its not much different tbh)

A bit faster of a typer now but if you watch him actually type in videos/streams, you'll see him get stuck sometimes as he tries to figure out his sentences. but he does spell things correctly now for the most part.

Interestingly I would sometimes see in old videos where id see him typing some sentences in a more ~proper~ manner. ex one being "i look forward to seeing such things as these" at guude when he said he was recording something. In hermitcraft charity stream last year he whispered to etho "of course! with our prefect prowess" (screenshot below). which is not at all his *usual* way of typing, its more exaggerated on purpose.

this is funny to me that i have noted it so long ago, and then we have a guy who seems very into settings that would lend that kind of speech (all his bwb kingdoms, the king arc with ren where its VERY apparently used). that said he doesnt do this much- dont go overboard on this one! i feel its mainly when bragging about himself, or a few times where he thinks it would be amusing- he can be pretty sarcastic sometimes (outside of the king arc roleplaying)

He still doesn't use emotes much (i cant think of many new videos where he does, but i dont have as much reference in these new videos. i would play it safe and stick to the simple ones mentioned above. While he still doesn't punctuate his sentences as much and still doesn't capitalize, I feel like he types a bit more how he talks? using exclamations more to finish his sentences, sometimes a "?!", maybe more than one exclamation even- and usually when sounding "mad" in chat he will use all caps. sometimes a multiple !! or ??

Liveblogging real life part 2: Joel (it's been 12 13 days) (already watched)

for martyn! you said "kinda pronouncing the g in words like lon, strong, Renchanting" - i think i would word this more like, when he makes a "ng" sound, he ends it with a k. so like "ngk" (except "ng" is one sound. so ŋ, so "ŋk" is more accurate, i just dont know how well known ŋ is as a letter)

martyn also is good at just going with the flow of things. he's good at fake confidence and therefore intimidation. he's good at threats (this clip comes to mind)

martyn also knows some japanese, he has to take a second to think about it but he can say things in it

sometimes martyn does a "hehehe" laugh and there's a little "sh"ing to it? like his tongue is brushing up against his teeth like how it does with a sh sound but everything else is doing the laugh (like at the very end of this video)

martyn and jimmy have "the game's the game" as an inside joke, once the old sherrif is introduced in empires season 2. i know joel is unaware of it but thats about it, i assume its between just martyn and jimmy

skizz swears sometimes—not enough that its a problem, he doesnt tone it down that much in pg spheres i think? but he does. for example in limited life "ive been a real dick to you" to scott, and in 3rd life he mentioned on the imp & skizz podcast, that after the first session they had a meeting and skizz said something about scar and grian telling skizz and [whoever he was with] to essentially go fuck themselves, and everyone in the call just exploded laughing because they did Not expect it lol. basically when skizz swears its funny and unexpected

something ive also noticed: jimmy tends to be more cautious of suicide jokes, like when he encounters one he usually goes "ohp" or "oh, jeez-" or something like that. cleo and martyn aren't so much, they're pretty comfortable with them i think (cleo in double life ghost pov: "suicide! thats what we want here" and martyn mentioning a thing he saw of stampy playing something and it suddenly cutting to him saying "and now im just gonna kill myself" and martyn found that hard cut funny)

jimmy is just generally more cautious of things that'd get him demonetized i think. he picked up really quickly on scott implying he wanted to call himself a "[f slur] guy" but couldnt because of TOS whereas it took martyn a good 10 or so seconds

martyn switches between zed and zee. he'll say xyz with zed but colin z with zee, for example

martyn ends verbal paragraphs with "so, there you go" quite a bit

martyn and all his characters are really gender inclusive, the old sherriff saying "good morning ma'am, good morning sir, good morning they, good morning them", for example (martyn's really good about this in general actually :D)

ren tries to be as well, "ladies and gentlemen and everyone in between" but he forgets sometimes

owen uses tone tags in speech, "slash gen" "slash s r s" "slash neg" "slash pos" "slash jay"

people like bek and tubbo do so as well sometimes but owen does it the most

oh, scar safe as a phrase :D scar uses it the most, grian uses it sometimes, idk about others

tubbo can get very loud. especially on rats. "RRRRRRRRATS??"

tubbo also constantly jokes about being homophobic while saying he's serious. tubbo himself is gay. this is such a thing that the emote tubFoe is a thing

11. has an F/O inspired you to pick up a new hobby/interest/habit this year?

i'd say "gray inspired me to pick otome games back up so i could read spade alice (the new one he's in)" but that feels like cheating LOL. i also technically did my first gunpla shortly before ren Appeared to me... so while i've gotten MORE into it thanks to ren (and the thought of us doing them together), i also don't really count that. ren did get me hardcore back into art tho... like he's my oc so if i'm not making shit for him NOBODY is kjNKJSDFNKJNF. and he's making me focus a bit more on clothes than i normally would in my art AND irl (i want to look soooo cute for him~). and even though i haven't started YET, i do EVENTUALLY want to do mycology research for funsies. i know Enough about my own mycotoxin ailments, but anything beyond that is just like. what mushrooms used to grow outside my family's previous house and how RANCID they smelled lmao. i feel like learning more would get me closer to him, and i can see it as him infodumping to me! like that one post about leaf-cutter ants and fungus farms was WILD... i want to learn more shit like that!!!!

14. did you find out anything new and surprising about yourself through selfshipping this year?

honestly, i think ren has helped me explore so many parts of myself that i don't know how to list it all. dude's like... 10% stuff from the original dream, 30% original stuff, 60% stuff taken directly or remixed from my life. ;;;; the 30-40% that isn't me is KEY and clearly makes him very different and his own person, but also... love to dump traumas on OCs to work through them~~~ (as a Kinda Funny Thing, i think i hyperfixated on Just Some Guy ren as much as i did Villain Doc ren.... i think i've gone from "nobody will be as interesting as a cool fictional character" to "just give me a cute retail worker who's real niceys to me, i want to give it a try" OKJSNFKJN) i've also found out i have the capacity for WAAAAAY MORE social interaction than i thought possible. i've been isolated since 2016, becoming progressively more socially anxious, and one of my 2023 goals was just to go from "regular chatter in one twitch stream" to "regular chatter in multiple twitch streams", which would have been a huge change in itself... and yet here i am just chatting it up w people daily!!!!! it's nuts!!!! i still obvs have bad days... plus i still can't really do one-on-one dms or chat apps like discord kJNDKJFNSKDJFN i'm gonna need Actual For Real Therapy to be comfy doing that again KJSNKFJNKJDFNS... but i've met so many fucking cool people since making this blog, and i love chatting in tags and replies and asks like these!! i even made the first "move" in multiple cases! it's a small thing... but to me, it's huge. and it's improved my mood SO much (sans this month yeehaw but that isn't selfshipping's fault lol). all this to say HIEEEEEE if you're reading this you're rad af and ilu hehehe

fuck yeah I'll come talk to you! my goodness. I've long been hesitant to send asks to blogs I don't know or consider popular.

I followed you for your pjo writing, so I was very surprised to find out that your url is from matthew stover's ROTS novelisation. two-ish years ago I watched star wars for the first time and fell in love with the prequels, it is probably still the fandom I most interact with on here.

I notice most (all?) of your star wars fics on ao3 are sequel things. I haven't seen the sequels yet because of general negative internet sentiment towards them. although this is bad logic because the internet feels negatively about a lot of great things, including ("great" is subjective I suppose) the prequels.

as someone who still mainly associates you with pjo, I guess I'm just curious about you and star wars in general. did you watch the movies when they first came out? or did you, like me, discover them later? and would you care to make a case for watching the sequels?

and as an aside - how do you feel about anon asks. do you prefer when people are non-anon?

truly genuinely i dont think i've ever met a person on this website, Popular Online or not, who has been upset about receiving genuine asks. LIKE as someone who prefers to be approached rather than to approach people i very understand the reticence to make contact, but if you ever have hesitance because your brain is like 'ooooh they aren't gonna want to talk to meeeeeee' i really truly think you can let that one go. esp because anon is an option - the worst thing that happens is that someone doesn't respond, which is also not personal and is usually related to brain death on the part of the person receiving the ask

BASICALLY i really think that most people making themselves available on the social media want to use the media to be social - if they didn't, they'd close their ask box.

MAN okok i love to talk about a personal fandom history LOL star wars is a weird one for me! i came into the fandom extremely sideways - while it turns out i had watched at least one of the prequels in theatres as a child, i had somehow wiped all memory of them from my mind, leaving only a residual obsession with padme amidala's lipstick lingering in my hindbrain

so my first Real Encounter with star wars as a fan concept was via Livejournal Role Play lolol, the premise of which is that you would roleplay as characters either in an AU setting, or an isekai-your-character-was-captured-from-their-home-world-somehow setting. so i was playing sakura from naruto in a harry potter/final fantasy fusion AU (there's a fun sentence) when someone joined the game with Jaina Solo from the star wars extended universe, and i just thought the character and player were the fucking coolest?

so that's how i ended up learning about like, the post-original Star Wars trilogy EU books first LMAO and then eventually i watched the original trilogy and re-watched the prequel trilogy (this was back in 2009/10 so sequel series were not on the horizon at all). i rp'd a bunch of star wars characters in a bunch of games (most notably middle aged Leia from the later EU books and a man called Kyp Durron who i refuse to believe was not the template and inspiration for kylo ren), and also played the Knights of the Old Republic games, and eventually helped create and moderate an rp based on those games. so my first star wars creative endeavors were very rp based, and kotor based, and any fic i was writing at the time was like, kyp durron and alyss from a ya novel adaptation of alice in wonderland are falling in love in the harry potter/final fantasy fusion setting where we also included pokemon so kyp has a shuckle for a pet because jaina gifted it to him as a gag. all that fic is littered around the internet - lj accounts and dreamwidth accounts and defunct aim group chats, where you'd write stuff for like the three people who were into your extremely, impossible to replicate cross canon ship instead of doing your stats homework, it was heady shit.

the username came about after i decided to abandon my old internet handle/identity of 'feilyn' lolol. basically i made up 'feilyn' as a name for myself when i was like 15 and used it everywhere, which resulted in most online friends i made at the time calling me 'fei', which in turn got cuteified into 'feibean', which is what i originally called this blog right up until someone sent me an ask going 'hey feibean' and i went oh NO i HATE that, and decided that i needed a username that was like, Poetic and Pretty

the funniest part to me is that i hadn't actually read the stover novelisation at that time? i just knew about the passage it came from because a friend had quoted it at me before and i was like oh that's Beautiful. so i did probably the most pretentious thing in the process of making a pretentious internet handle, which was to refer to a thing i hadn't actually read (i have since read the novelisation LOL and highly recommend it to anyone into star wars i general, but especially if you feel the prequels had Great Themes and Poor Execution - the book does a much better job at the execution part)

SO by the time the sequel movies were announced i had been into star wars for like, 5, 6 years? and it had been a staple part of not only my creative life but also my social and romantic life, so i was primed to be fucking obsessed. at that point i wasn't journal rping anymore, and most of my creative energy was split between fic (pjo and grisha at the time) and trying to make my original book idea work (it did not), and i had gotten into the groove of Writing Fic For An Audience.

and then the first sequel movie came out and i fucking loved it! like sure it was a little derivative, but it had so much of what i loved about star wars in it, and it especially helped that kylo ren really did seem like a kyp durron expy, and i was right in the middle of my weird heterosexual lesbianism phase where all i wanted to write was Overpowered Man Gets Stepped On By Brunette Teenager He Underestimated so reylo hit me like a fucking freight train.

i think in the first month after that movie came out i wrote like, 21 fics in he space of a month. i went to my first ever music festival and was just lying in the tent writing fic on the budget smart phone i had bought so my actual phone didn't get stolen. it was SUCH a flurry of creative energy for me, because star wars before that point had been not a dead fandom, but certainly not a fandom that had a lot of Fic-Centric Life in the spaces i was in, and the movie brought so much new blood and voices and interest and readers to the canon. so if i told people i felt like writing x thing and asked for prompts, i'd get like 10 or 12 requests at a time - more than i could fulfill, certainly, but also so many that it really fed the fire of my interest and determination to Provide Content

and then, you know, the Drama and the Discourse and the weird creation of shipping as identity where people became A Reylo instead of shipping reylo, and this formation of Antis as a thing, and on and on until fandom in general becomes this place of adversarial combat that is supposed to reflect on your ethics and moral as a person and Oh Man i do remember being exhausted by all of these arguments at the time (and now tbh, but these days i am not actively participating in them). eventually i dropped out of star wars as a fandom from like, creative and discourse burnout i think, and also my relationships with the friends i shared the fandom with were changing, and i was also changing as a person and then TROS came out and was really a death knell to any joy i'd gotten out of the fandom or canon from that point.

as for a case for watching the sequels - i think if you can watch them without needing them to Be Anything In Particular, you can have a good time with them. like, for example, i think TROS was an objectively bad fucking movie, but i had a lot of fun when i watched it because i went it with a baseline of curiosity about how or if abrams could pull this off, and the answer was 'by trying to split every fandom argument of the last 4 years down the exact middle' and 'no, he can't pull it off'. that shit isn't a movie, it's a video response to every star wars trending topic between 2015-2019. and at the time of viewing, this was very fucking funny to me. i had a ball.

SO if you can watch them with the contextual understanding of like, these are massive corporate enterprises created by committee, with different people at the helm of different movies who had very different understandings on what the point of this trilogy was, i genuinely think they can be a good time. there's pew pew lasers, there are some real affecting moments, and there is a lot of bewildered amusement to be had at nature of attempting to create Billion Dollar Art.

if you are looking for a story that is going to leave you feeling fulfilled and as though the creators had consideration and respect for either their viewers, their actors, or the story they were telling, then give them a pass. like i really really think there is a lot of fun and interest to be had in watching the sequels for both 'here is a space fantasy laser fun time' reasons and 'what does art look like when it's primary purpose is to create obscene amounts of wealth based off the nostalgia of nerds but also the concept of modernising a franchise for the 21st century' reasons, and these are both big reasons why i engage in any kind of media LOL

but i also understand the special place star wars holds in a lot of people's hearts, and not wanting to engage in material thatg feels like it has sucked a lot of the joy out of that special place is always legit. so like, if you are intrigued, give them a shot, and if you find yourself hating the experience then stop watching. trust ur heart babe

FINALLY i have no strong opinion on whether people are anon or signed in! it's all about your comfort level truly, i do not put emphasis on one mode or another. sometimes people will send me something signed in and ask me to respond privately, which i am always happy to do, and sometimes people will send messages anon, but identify themselves as like 'oh im the anon who asked about sunflowers, i'm sunflower anon'. SO YEAH whatever combination of identifiers is personally comfortable for the person sending the ask is how i prefer people to communicate.

thanks to your post about it before i tried the character AI once. I said hello to a Chrollo one I made and next thing I know I'm crying trying to hide scarlet eyes for him against my will, he has killed my family, threatened to cut off my hands to sell my nails, forced me to make him dinner and it's already 11pm when I started this at 8am

It's surprising sometimes how realistic it can feel. Although I did once break Ren who started just talking???? like this????? for everything???????????? he said???????? with more???????????? question marks??????????? each time?????????????? and had to restart the chat.

I can definitely see why people say it's addicting and why another anon warned me to be aware of that! I ended up putting a 30 minute timer on CharacterAI for the day. I usually just do a few minutes every now and then to give myself a break while I work, errands/chores, and write. If you still play it, I'd definitely suggest doing something like that to help you avoid spending all day on it.

What sorts of dates do Chrysijacks do? Do either of them put on a proper proposal when they do get married? What's their favorite things about the other.

HONESTLY, most of their more traditional “dates” were done BEFORE they started dating (back when it was jacks’s girlfriend staring at chrysijacks dating and went “okay so why the hell am i here, it looks like he already has a fucking girlfriend. ???”)…. and that was always them going to the mall and jacks getting chrysi things she wanted (while she was like HEY KNOCK IT OFF)… they took photos in photo booths together… they would go to karaoke!!… bowling obvi…. chrysi dragged him to bookstores and he’d hold all her books while she looked (while he also stared at her w heart eyes… but yeah, no, theyre not dating. obviously. lol.)

once they’re TOGETHER, however, they calm down on the overly romantic dates and they settle down into something more suited for who they are together, as a couple. they like to go on walks in the park, and when it’s night time, they both hang out on the playground and chat. they get beverages together and hang out. they do go to ren faire together (i should redraw jester jacks and princess chrysi…) and have fun there. i feel like most of the time, chrysijacks go on walks while holding hands and appreciating each other in silence. OH they also like hanging out on the beach. on account of chrysijacks becoming canon while i was on vacation on the beach.

proper proposal….. hmm……. this has to happen on, like, marriage 38858483 because jacks figures that maybe if they do something official this time, they won’t divorce 😭 he gets down on one knee at the lighthouse and everything and they have a PROPER MARRIAGE this time!!! i feel like it’s at the end of a silly scavenger hunt that jacks kinda fumbled 💀 BUT it works out because at the end of the day, he still loves her ☹️ and chrysi loves him ☹️☹️☹️ so she agrees to marry him and they don’t divorce this time!! yay!!!!

(i also have chrysi propose to jacks in my glee au, but that’s more regarding the renewal of their vows. although everyone tries to convince them to divorce so they can have a proper wedding for everyone to attend, instead of a quick courthouse wedding!)

tbh… i think that, at their core, chrysijacks’s favorite thing abt each other is jst that they both know each other’s negative traits so well and that it doesn’t affect their feelings for each other. they just… know. each other. and how to work around things and/or improve some intense emotional situations. they’re like. ughhhh. i just. they are!! I AM NOT MAKING SENSE BUT THEY LIKE HOW WELL THEY KNOW EACH OTHER EVEN YEARS AFTER BEING APART 😭

Just like I did with the first episode, my stream-of-consciousness babble about ep 2 will go below. Woop woop!

Yes, Zuko channeling his best Kylo Ren impression with this tantrum to start us off here. LOL

Hm, okay so looking like the pirates part will get skipped over. Gran Gran really stepping up in this live-action adaptation... outing Aang as the Avatar, delivering the iconic "everything changed" lines, and now being the way Katara got the waterbending scroll. And.. as a bonus.. Gran Gran tells her (though not in exact wording) to always remember who she is. Shades of Gyatso telling Aang something similar. Awww.. got some feels.

And more feels with the Gyatso burial.. I'm glad they added more air temple. It felt so rushed at the end of last episode.

Kyoshi warriors, let's goooo!

Sokka doing Sokka things.. lol.. trying to impress with his foot in his mouth.

Commander Sideburns has a much calmer voice/presence - and apparently not as much backhistory with Zuko/Iroh here.

Gah, in love with the playing in the creek moment with Aang & Katara.

Hmmm, trying to decide how I feel about Suki. I mean I like her, but it doesn't feel like original Suki either. It feels like she's absolutely not sure how to flirt with Sokka even if she wants to.

Aang saying he had people scared of him, like Katara and Sokka were when he was in the avatar state.. it's one of the sad things I miss about the changes. In the original, it was more like Katara at least was scared FOR him, not OF him, when he was in that state. Maybe this chat will help it get to that point though.

Oh okay. A little training montage to help with the flirting lol. Looks like they're giving Suki the "help him with his form" that Katara had with Aang in the original.

Avatar Kyoshi guide. Okay. Who needs Roku lol

OMG, Suki Mama is a badass too.. so cool.

So. Making Zhao trash Kyoshi village sort of feels like trying to make Zuko not as much the bad guy. Meanwhile, Zuko fighting Katara while she's trying to protect spirit-journeyed Aang seems like a nod to what originally happened at the NWT, so I wonder if that will be altered now too. And I mean, awesome for Kyoshi Island to get to see "Kyoshi" fighting but.. I dunno, I kind of like the original better. Okay.. reminder to self.. remember your promise to imagine this being an "AU fanfic done big".

Okay, this one didn't feel as rushed pacing-wise. Mainly it just focused on one episode of the original though, with nods pulled in from other episodes. The costuming was super cool, and there was a lot of pretty lighting with the camerawork, and I appreciate the little lighthearted scenes sprinkled in too. I hope we keep getting those because all-heavy, all the time would be exhausting.. and not true to the spirit of the original, where Aang brought light and joy.

hi!! small scheduling thing I wanna say before we get into it!! if you just wanna see the art you can skip to under the cut!! where it says 'keep reading'!!

Im posting 10 (thats right, ten!) drawings today, and 5 tomorrow!! (hopefully!) that way, I can just post one final drawing on Halloween!! I didn't fully think this schedule out tbh... but thats okay! I think this'll work fine, Im just ensuring you all know :D

as for how I'll post after October... we'll have to see!! I *might* do novelember! but I also might instead of daily prompts combine them into one per week or generally do less, just because I can't write as fast as I draw! What year were you born in?

1995

Do you remember a time before smartphones and social media?

Yup. I think I got my first smartphone either when I was finishing middle school or entering high school. Before it was all about flip phones and slide phones.

Were you part of the generation that experienced the transition from dial-up internet to broadband?

Oh yes. Until I was about 12-13, I barely ever used internet because it was dial-up and so obnoxiously slow. Other people already had broadband by that point, but we got it a bit late.

Did you grow up watching Saturday morning cartoons?

Yees. I didn't have Nickelodeon and Disney when I was a kid, but we had local channels playing blocks of cartoons every Saturday and Sunday morning, and I think they were similar to what could be found on those channels. I remember distinctly that I wasn't allowed to watch Ren & Stimpy, but I secretly did anyway before my parents got up lol

Do you have any memories of using floppy disks or cassette tapes?

Not floppy disks and not so much cassette tapes, though I think we had a few. CDs were a bigger thing.

I do remember watching Disney cartoons on VHS though, we had so many of those when I was very young.

How did you communicate with your friends before the advent of text messaging?

Either landline or we would go to each other's house, stand outside, and yell at the top of our lungs for the other person to come out. I don't know why we never simply went to the door and rang the bell, I just know we were always yelling lol

Were you a fan of any particular boy band or girl group during your teenage years?

Actually no. And I have to say, the only boy band that I remember from my teen years was One Direction. I think they formed when I was around 15 and broke up when I was 20, so technically they should be my teen boy band, but I was into alternative, rock, and metal. I'm into a boy band now though lol

Did you ever own a portable CD player or a Walkman?

Nope, I had an MP3 player for a while though.

What was your favorite video game console when you were growing up?

I didn't actually have any, nor did any of my friends have any. I only used my computer for games, and only the illegal versions a friend of a friend managed to obtain somehow lol. Ah, those were the days.

Not really. I think I had MSN, but I only used it once or twice before I switched to chatting on Skype.

Definitely not, I was younger than 5. I only learned about the whole thing years and years later.

Did you ever rent movies from a physical video rental store like Blockbuster or Hollywood Video?

Yes, not from those, but we had our local video rental stores that we got CDs from.

Were you into MySpace or LiveJournal during the early days of social networking?

Actually no, because I think those two things weren't as big here as they were in the West. Like, I always hear people online talk about MySpace days, but I never hear anyone irl ever mention they used MySpace.

What was your first experience with online shopping?

Ooh, that was very very late. I don't remember exactly when I started online shopping, but I think it came here only after 2010s and I didn't use it anyway because I didn't have my own money. So I guess I only really started online shopping after 2018 when I made enough. I never wanted to ask my parents to buy me something online because I felt they'd think it's sketchy lol.

Did you ever participate in a flash mob or witness one in person?

Nope.

How did you discover new music before the rise of streaming platforms like Spotify?

I think mostly Youtube. Like, you'd listen to something and get a bunch of other songs in the similar genre recommended to you. Also, friends from school would mention this band or that band is cool, check them out and then I would.

Were you a fan of the "Harry Potter" book series or the "Twilight" saga?

Yes to both. I grew up on Harry Potter, learned to read thanks to Harry Potter and I pretty much credit it for the path I chose to take in life because I really think it instilled the love for literature in me. I know it has fallen out of grace these days and it was painful to learn about the whole J.K. Rowling thing, but I can't deny its impact on me or pretend that I now hate the book series.

And Twilight was absolutely my jam in middle school. I didn't care about the romance at all, but I always loved vampires. Even if Twilight vampires are a bit, well, not traditional lol

Did you ever have a MySpace profile and customize it with HTML and CSS?

Nope.

What was your favorite TV show or cartoon during your childhood?

Hmm, Charmed was my favourite show. As for cartoons, there were so so many at different points in my life. There was Spongebob, Dragon Ball, Yu-gi-oh, Tokyo Mew Mew, Pokemon, Winx, Phineas and Ferb...

How did you feel about the transition from traditional television to streaming services?

I didn't feel any particular way. When I got Netflix in 2020, streaming services were already a totally normal, widespread thing and I hadn't properly watched traditional TV for years before that. As always, we were late jumping onto the streaming bandwagon, but it's not like I needed some special mental preparation for it. I just got Netflix, started watching, and was like, wow, this is convenient, I love it.

So, I came across a post from a few years back that talked about MaruRen and it seemed riddled with misinformation, so I decided to make a post about the contents of that ask where I wanted to correct those misunderstandings.

The ask in question is here.

From what I can see, there are three main points:

Marucho’s intelligence was downgraded so Gundalian Invaders could happen. This is evident in how Marucho (and by extension Dan and Shun as well) didn’t question how Ren had hacked his way into Interspace.

First and foremost, Ren didn’t gain access to Bakugan Interspace through hacking because I’m sure that definitely would’ve raised some security concerns if he had and made it less liable for the Brawlers to trust him. No, Ren was able to get inside Bakugan Interspace at the end of S2 because he told Kato he had something important to discuss with Marucho, so Kato let him in.

Probably not the smartest move on Kato’s part lol but Ren didn’t do anything suspicious to get inside Interspace which is why the Brawlers do hear him out. (You know who did hack their way inside Interspace to speak to the Brawlers? Fabia lol)

Also, to my knowledge, Bakugan Interspace was never stated to have been created from Vestal technology?? They use the same battle rules as Vestal but that’s about it.

Secondly, while Marucho is without a doubt highly intelligent and book smart, he also feels strongly towards the people he considers friends and never doubts their integrity, which can get in the way of logical reasoning. Preyas has remarked that it’s a quality of Marucho’s that he adores, because his kindness is boundless and it makes him who he is.

Marucho trusts his friends fully and never suspects they would betray his trust (or suspects his friends could be used to lure him out.) Gundalian Invaders didn’t suddenly introduce this phenomenon, it’s a trait that Marucho has had since S1 which keeps being shown.

In S1, Marucho refused to believe that one of the Brawlers could be a spy (while the rest of the Brawlers were accusing each other) and instead looked to see if someone else could’ve been spying on their chats.

In the Evolution Tournament comic which takes place in S1, Marucho denies Shun’s allegations about Marucho’s new online friend, Katie Lowery, and instead chooses to believe in her.

In S2, Marucho was lured into a trap by Shadow because Marucho heard the sound of Dan’s voice and didn’t hesitate to come to his rescue.

And in S3, Marucho’s kind and trusting personality is once more put to the test with Ren.

Based off this, it’s no surprise that Marucho refused to acknowledge the evidence of Ren’s betrayal, even as it was staring him in the face. Again, Marucho greatly trusts the people he considers his friends and GI only expanded on that.

It can’t be overstated that this is the essence of Marucho and it’s what makes him who he is. His S1 trial, the lessons he learned through his friendship with Preyas and the many instances throughout the show where he chose to believe explicitly showcase Marucho’s kind and trusting nature and how he believes in his friends no matter what.

Ren’s initial reason for switching sides is because Marucho was his friend, almost entirely so. If Marucho hadn’t been Ren’s friend, Ren would’ve been a neutral third party.

Claiming that Marucho was the entire reason Ren switched sides is to ignore a lot of things. It ignores how Ren’s teammates were purged one by one while he remained unpunished, causing him a great deal of grief, and spurring him to question why he was given special treatment.

It ignores how Jesse and Nurzak sensed Ren wasn’t being honest with himself and how they both asked Ren to speak from his heart.

It ignores how Dan called him out on his unhappiness and reaffirmed that they’re friends, letting Ren know that he has a place to return to.

It ignores how Linehalt kept asking Ren if he was okay with his current predicament, likewise knowing that Ren wasn’t happy like this.

It ignores Sid’s sacrifice and how in his final moments, he told Ren to live his life his way, a line that Ren would forever remember.

It ignores Ren’s growing discontent with staying by Barodius’ side amidst the purging of his teammates and fighting the Brawlers on the battlefield, how Barodius always kept Ren in the dark about his duties as a Dark Guardian and ultimately, how Ren realized that Barodius never had Ren’s best interests at heart, only his own.

Marucho definitely plays an important role in Ren’s story but he’s not the single factor that makes Ren realize he’s on the wrong side of the war. It’s his bond with Marucho that makes it so difficult for him to play the bad guy and it’s Marucho who constantly tells him that he isn’t a bad guy, he’s a good person who was taken advantage of.

But to state that only Marucho mattered is a huge disservice to all the other characters who had a role to play in this part of S3, as Ren’s decision to leave was influenced by the words and actions of many, telling him to follow his heart.

And finally, the line that talks about how Marucho being Ren’s friend is the only thing keeping him from being a neutral party is false. If you were to imagine Marucho not being friends with Ren, you would be looking at a completely different version of S3, as Marucho’s friendship with Ren literally cannot be removed without also compromising the entirety of GI’s plot. Unless Ren dropped off the Phantom Data that he had and stayed away during the continued creation of Interspace, there’s just simply no way Marucho and Ren wouldn’t have become friends.

For someone to approach Marucho and provide him with the data needed to complete his virtual reality world where kids can battle freely, spend a whole year working alongside Marucho on a project that’s so dear to him while getting to know Marucho better? Of course that person would end up becoming Marucho’s friend. It’s impossible to remove this component of the storyline without fundamentally changing everything in the first 26 episodes (and the last scene of episode 39.)

Marucho and Ren’s friendship being an important and irreplaceable part of GI’s storyline and Ren being encouraged by many to follow his heart and join the Brawlers as he was never happy by Barodius’ side are two things that can and do, in fact, coexist.

It is the ship with the least weight between itself, SpectraGus and DanShun (as in, has meat to it in canon)

I think this point right here is easily debunked with a simple link to my MaruRen meta lol.

The argument was that Ren would’ve been a neutral party if Marucho hadn’t been his friend and SpectraGus and DanShun are the only other ships that are similar in that regard. We’ve already established that the ‘Ren would’ve been a neutral party if Marucho hadn’t been his friend’ argument is invalid so no, it can’t be compared to SpectraGus and DanShun.

And as for canon material that supports these ships, SpectraGus and DanShun are actually quite overrated in that regard.

Gus is, as many characters have pointed out, Spectra’s lapdog and he does whatever Spectra wants and switches to whatever side Spectra’s on, with seemingly no moral compass of his own. Spectra uses Gus’ technical expertise and then turns to his father to enlist him once Gus goes missing. Gus’ return at the end of S2 is met with indifference from Spectra’s side and going forth, their relationship remains almost exactly as it was when the two were introduced.

Dan and Shun have known each other since they were young kids, but they’ve only had 3 episodes worth of drama in S1 and the MS1 angst that didn’t even delve into their relationship as childhood friends. There's nothing to really showcase how Dan and Shun's friendship made them grow as individuals either? You could take Dan and Shun at the end of S1 and compare to how they behave around each other in MS2, and you wouldn’t see much growth between as friends.

You know who did have a good amount of growth between them as friends throughout the show and who have a lot more canon content than DanShun? Runo and Julie, but that’s a post for another day. (Also, if you're looking for properly written childhood friends in this show, look no further than Billy and Julie.)

To summarize, SpectraGus, DanShun and MaruRen have vastly different amount of canon content to support them and MaruRen isn’t the ship that’s losing here.

MaruRen is a relationship between two people that’s so intricately woven into the plot of S3 that you cannot remove it without also destroying a large portion of the narrative.

It’s two people who deepen their bond through the creation of a world where children can play freely, something neither of them were allowed to do themselves as children.

It’s one person continuously asking why they are shown kindness because they think of themselves as a cruel and horrible being, while the other person constantly responds, “because you’re my friend and you’re a good person.”

Would anything significant have changed in S1 if Dan and Shun weren’t childhood friends? Would anything significant have changed in S2 if Gus and Spectra didn’t have their peculiar relationship and were instead simple co-workers like the rest of the Vexos?

If you find yourself thinking ‘not really’, then I ask of you: how can SpectraGus and DanShun even begin to compare to MaruRen?

Sleepy Hermit Headcanons

Fluff, No one asked for this but I will still present my daydreaming, no I'm not touch starved what are y'all talking about also thank you to the discord when I asked who to add, only to name like half of the whitelist. There are many more I want to be soft with in the hopefully near future so this is probably just a part one

Grian---

Aprently macaws sleep for 12 hours so yeah, goodluck waking up early with a bird boy resting after a day filled with heavy lifting

Will lay on top of you solely to make you completely disappear under his wings like a gaint colorful blanket

You can tell when he's finally waking up because he'll start nuzzling into you while making a bunch of chirping noises

It's adorable but dammit you woke up like three hours ago can you please move-

You've gotten into the habit of smoothing over his hair and feathers while waiting

Which, you can guess from the louder chirping that he enjoys it

Bdubs---

Goodluck having any sort of inconsistent sleep schedule, it might as well be a competitive sport with him

No matter what you're doing the minute the sun's touches the horizon you're gonna get dragged to the softest bed ever rather you want it or not

Uses you as pillow, it's impossible to get up without waking him up. Wake him up and you're being clung to and begged to go back to sleep

In the morning he's almost always awake before you. So you wake up with the positions switched, your head on his chest

He's still trying to keep you asleep as long as possible, at least you've gotten a proper night's rest

Doc---

It was a little awkward at first, metal arm, centaur body and all. But you found out how to make things work

Loves curling around you, crushing you into his chest, pressing your face into his furr, the whole thing

He's always making sure the blanket keeps the cold metal off your skin. You don't really mind it but he keeps doing it anyways

He hisses alot in his sleep, and if your crash course in creeper behavior served you right it's his equivalent of purring. It's sweet to think he feels that safe and relaxed with you

Being squished against his chest also means you can hear the soft tick of cybernetics alongside his heartbeat

Ren---

Part two of how in the world is it this comfort to cuddle with you you're like half metal-

You've woken up in some really weird positions to avoid the ol' steel pillow his chest and arm are

He's on the colder side, loves to bury his face in your neck. Not ideal (for you lol) during the winter, but at least he likes using you as a hot water bottle

Okay this was inevitable, ear scratches the puppy loves them. Will fight sleep just to keep enjoying the sritches

Talks in his sleep alot, the amount of storylines you've pieced together from his broken dialog is incredible

Xisuma---

Very half and half with who drags who away for some well deserved rest. At this point you might as well start keeping score

If you're the one getting him to bed then you often have to remind him that armor probably isn't the most comfortable pajamas for either of you-

If he's the one to get you in bed then he likes to mess with your hair as you drift off. That and little kisses. You of course return the gesture when it's you putting him to sleep

Has tried to get you to sleep with a group of axolotls. It was an... interesting experience. Napping in a pond isn't exactly your speed

Mornings are really sweet though, you'll both spend a while together chatting about the upcoming day while dozing off, the colder it is the longer it takes for either of you to get up
