Lighthouses that have stood the test of time
The lighthouse is a near-universal symbol of safety and guidance that has helped mariners find their way home since ancient times. Although they are gradually outliving their usefulness, they are still epic monuments to human ingenuity and their own resilience.
Ancient mariners were often guided home by bonfires built on hilltops, which were later elevated and evolved into lighthouses. And since there were no actual ports back then, the blazes showed the safest way to the shore. The structures gradually grew taller and stronger and moved closer to the sea. Most lighthouses currently still standing are marvels of practical and resilient architecture and engineering, brushing off the worst that the oceans have to offer.

🌊 Throwback to the Whiteford Lighthouse, one of my favourite trips out. The walk to the Whiteford lighthouse is a beautiful one, crossing through swamps, forests, fields, sand dunes and ending by the sea- this walk is maintained by the National Trust. Such a beautiful walk, and so energetically vibrant. The Whiteford lighthouse is a beautiful old Victorian lighthouse- made from cast iron. I find there's something inherently romantic and poetic about lighthouses. And there's also something weirdly witchy about them. There's very little folklore when it comes to light houses and folk magic. However, we all know that if you need a guiding light, witchcraft near the lighthouse can only work in your favour. Here's a little bit more about this particular lighthouse. (I'm a little bit of a lighthouse nerd- I actually met the last lighthouse keeper of the UK!) It is the only wave-swept cast-iron tower of this size in the UK. The tower is 13m high and stands just above low-water level. It was built in 1854, and was officially turned off in 1920. However, local people rallied around the lighthouse, raising enough money to start the light back up in the 1980s. It remained in use until the solar unit failed and was not replaced. It is scheduled to become an Ancient Monument because of it's historical significance. When it was first in use, it used to house two keepers, dropping to one, and then to none- becoming fully automated. ° ° ° ° ° ° ° #witchgram #witchesofinstagram #witchaesthetic #instawitch #witchessociety #witchsociety #witchesofig #witchesofinsta #healersofinstagram #witchstagram #pagansofinstagram #pagan #paganism #paganwitch #victorian #pagancommunity #polytheist #seaside #history #lighthouse #travel #photography #wales #holiday #nature #beach #ocean #bluesky #seascape #beachlife Remember to follow me on Instagram to keep updated and also unique Instagram-only competitions! https://instagr.am/p/CKQ6iW2nd2D/

#GoodNews: Historic Photographer of the Year Awards 2021 winners emerged
STEVE LIDDIARD
Steve Liddiard has been declared all-embracing winner of the Historic Photographer of the Year Awards 2021, for his photo of the Whiteford Point Lighthouse in the Gower Peninsula, Wales.
“The lighthouse was built in 1865 to a design by John Bowen, of Llanelli, to mark the shoals of Whiteford Point, replacing an earlier piled structure of 1854, of which nothing remains,”
Mr Liddiard…
