PSA For anyone watching Xena: Warrior Princess for the first time

(or giving it a re-watch)

At the end of the last season (S6), you can move the watch order of the last few episodes around to get a different finale for the show than what aired. There are members of the fandom who think this order is the superior viewing experience (myself included).

I personally tested this order with a friend of mine last time I rewatched the series (first time watch for him) and we both loved it.

1. How many works do you have on AO3? 53, but full disclosure, I haven't yet moved everything I've written to AO3 yet.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 885,181 (but honestly, OBaaT Georg is an outlier, and maybe shouldn't have been counted...)

3. What fandoms do you write for? Currently? Ever? Currently, it's SuperCat and, more recently, Guiding Light/Otalia. Stupid unfinished WIP that has haunted me for 15 years...

4. What are your top five fics by kudos? These are all SuperCat, btw. One Bridge at a Time, At the Pleasure of the Hotel de la Paix, Uncharted (part 11), At Sea, and (the shocker) Steel Blue.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Yes, as many as I can. I've been known to respond to some years after they were written. Comments are the lifeblood of my writing. One comment at the right time can inspire so much. Sometimes, even the completion of a lingering unfinished story...

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Easily, my tears ricochet (Mirandy). My wife (Lisof9) and I took a vow decades ago (pre-dating, even) that we would always write happy, hopeful endings where the couple is together.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Everything else? See above. That doesn't mean there isn't angst. My wife taught me everything I know about chasing characters up burning trees and then lobbing grenades and feral raccoons at them. She also taught me about cliffhangers.

8. Do you get hate on fic? Once. A long time ago on an ER fic, of all things. I didn't write a word for two years after that.

9. Do you write smut? Yes. I'm kinda known for that. It is sometimes even requested, meaning the prompt is given to me because it requires smut.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Hmm... Not really? Let me explain. One of my SuperCat stories mentions Emily Carlton from The Devil Wears Prada, and one of my Guiding Light stories has a brief cameo from a character on Saving Grace. The only true crossover I've ever written was wacky. It was Star Trek: Voyager and CSI: Miami. Decide for yourself: Wackiness. It's short.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not sure I understand the question. You mean plagiarized.? There was a rash of that happening in the early 2000s, I think, but my readers always let me know.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? I'm not sure. Probably.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Oh, absolutely! My wife should be considered my co-writer in everything because I have been known to pick her brain when I'm stuck. I've also co-written in the Guiding Light/Otalia fandom and in the L&O: SVU Casey/Olivia fandom.

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship? Oh, lord love a duck. SuperCat is certainly my once-and-future obsession. I've been writing them for over seven years at this point and, at last count, have 10 WIPs in the works for them.

My OTP Prime, though, is B'Elanna/Seven from Star Trek: Voyager because that's how I met my wife.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t? Hide Beside Me (Guiding Light/Otalia) has haunted me for 15 years, but remember when I said comments were the lifeblood of writing? Someone commented on it last week which revived my interest in finishing the story. I have a draft for chapter 32 in my WIPs folder right now because of that. I hope I finally get to check that one off my to-do list.

16. What are your writing strengths? Research, capturing character personalities, dialogue, and romance.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Fight scenes and the fact that I'm so slow as a writer.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? Actually, I have a plan to write an Astrid/Raphaelle story in French when I feel I'm up to snuff in French again. I can't wait. I love that ship.

19. First fandom you wrote for? Ever? Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. Buck/Wilma, on my handwriting practice pad from school. I was 10. Published in a 'zine? A Star Trek: The Next Generation Worf/Deanna story. Published online? Xena, Warrior Princess.

20. Favourite fic you’ve written? Currently, there are two:

Queen of Hearts, (ST:Voy, B/7), because it was a love letter to the woman who is now my amazing wife.

One Bridge at a Time, (Supergirl, SuperCat). I'm proudest of this one because it took me seven years to write, came in at 310+k words, and I finished it. I never gave up on it. It was always in my mind. And now I'm working on a sequel to it. :)

Xena was lean, mean, man-killing machine, Mean Angry (technically Kinsey 5)-Dyke representation and I will always love them for giving that to us so goddamn much

When have we ever seen in fiction a woman having a past with, and THEN rejecting men so flatly, as Xena did with Ares towards the end?

Letting him know smugly that "Gabrielle got the job" of her child's father... Always mocking him to his face, and at one point telling him to just go die. (in 6x20.)

Even now, where are the righteous, man-killing lesbians on tv? They fully punished Villanelle for it in the final season of Killing Eve. (and technically as an undercurrent throughout the whole show (written as an evil act, always, vs Xena's moral righteousness, Robin Hood-style motivations).)

I feel so seeeeeen lol. Amazing that they did this in the 90s. I feel like there's no room for this kind of rep these days because everyone in mainstream writig is trying to be So PC about it all. My writing is about dykes rejecting and killing cis dudes and I need a publisher who won't handwring about Bad Representation and Upsetting the Hetero Allies~!

The really subversive part about this character is that the homophobic line of "she just hasn't tried the right guy yet" is patently false. She tried it, lived it, and in the end, it wasn't as good as her female soulmate. She consciously chose something else.

And it subverts the notion that "oh, well it's okay if you were just BORN fully gay and couldn't help it!" She wasn't. She "could have" been with a man and turned away from that. It didn't fulfill her as much, as shown by her life choices in the end. And, arguably, they were destined to meet each other and be soulmates in all lifetimes, through reincarnation, on a metaphysical level. So it was both choice AND nature, meant to happen. From the hetero incarnation shown in India - with Gabrielle as the man - to Mel and Janice - to Annie and Mattie in the modern day. Among other things, they showed us that a woman can have been with men, and STILL be destined to be with woman/a woman, forever. That's powerful.

God, I could go on. When has ANY show ever given us something this special, in general? Ever since?

X:WP - Partners by Melissa Good In a post-apocalyptic world where most of the planet is now underwater and the remainder of the world's population fight over the scraps, Jess is a legacy soldier who has trust issues after being literally stabbed in the back by her last partner. Command proposes a solution, Dev: a biological alternative, "bio alt", programmed for combat and incorruptible loyalty. Prior to this all bio alts, vat-grown human-looking lifeforms with limited cognition but increased physical attributes, have only been programmed for common "unskilled" labor. Can a maverick marine and an untested science experiment get the job done? (Whew, I feel like I just wrote a deep-voice movie trailer speech.) What people now call AUs, the Xena fandom originally called uber fic, and Missy Good, aka Merwolf, is one of the best. She is an OG Ascended Fangirl who fic'd her way into legit writing two actual episodes of Xena. This story has action, intrigue, danger, sexiness, there's fascinating world building that naturally gets folded into the narrative by having an innocent outsider who needs things explained, and some intriguing discussions about personhood, autonomy, and human rights. Jess/Xena is brash, sarcastic, jaded, tough, and has problems with authority. Dev/Gabrielle is sweet, earnest, curious, a little snarky, and a lot talented. It seems like throwing them together would be oil and water, but like Xena and Gabrielle, somehow it works. This story, and several of her other uberfics, got published, so while you can read the fic for free on her website that I linked above, if you wanna throw $10 at an ebook you can go here.

New Year’s Resolutions

Hercules: The Legendary Journeys/Xena: Warrior Princess

Wordcount: 1000 Rating: G, silly Warning: None, except that it's written in a very 90's fanfic kind of way

Timeline: Takes place shortly after the Christmas specials, A Star To Guide Them in H:TLJ and A Solstice Carol in X:WP, though that's not particularly important. Also on AO3

It was the night of New Year's Eve, and the light of the full moon fell upon a hill where four friends had gathered. Gabrielle took her eyes from the stars she'd been watching and turned to face the two men. "So, what have you guys been up to this past year?"

Iolaus shrugged. "You know, the usual."

"Like what?"

Hercules exchanged a knowing smile with his friend and decided to go first. "Well, I got to be a spirit for a day."

"And I got to be purple," the lighter man put in.

"I played a prince."

"And I a king."

"I almost got killed as I was swallowed by a sea-serpent, for the second time."

"And I did get killed, for the third time."

The younger woman exchanged a look with Xena. "A-ha, that 'usual'."

"How 'bout you, what have you been up to?" Iolaus asked, eyes dancing with mirth.

"Well, I don't wanna brag," the dark warrior said with a smug smile, "but we died, too."

"Really?! Your first?" Iolaus' voice revealed his somewhat unnatural excitement for the topic.

"Yeah. Hey, did you also feel that, hm..." the bard stopped to search for the right word, "-tingle? You know, just before that, uhm, ‘whooshing’ sensation?"

"Yes! I know exactly what you mean! I've been wondering-”

"A-hum, excuse me." Hercules tried to get the attention of the two enraptured blondes. "Can't we find a more pleasant subject to talk about?" he asked uncomfortably.

"Ha, you're just jealous 'cause you never died," Iolaus informed him with a wink.

Hercules rolled his eyes and ignored his friend. "Did you perhaps do anything else? Besides dying?"

Gabrielle tapped a finger against her lip. "We did became bacchaes for a while," she said after some thinking.

"And I'm only just recovered from a body-exchange with Callisto," Xena offered.

"Sounds like you've been kind of busy, you too," Iolaus stated with a grin.

There was a short silence while the foursome in good humor contemplated the nature of their unusual lives.

"Do you think it's a new year yet?" the bard asked after a while.

Iolaus looked up at the moon. "Hard to tell, but I guess now's as good a time as any."

They all exchanged warm smiles and in unison wished each other a happy new year.

"So, any New Year's resolutions?" Gabrielle wanted to know.

"Well, Herc and I decided to make up each other’s resolutions this year." Iolaus turned to his friend, beaming with excitement. "So, what do I got?"

Hercules smiled before answering. "To stay out of trouble."

"And you expect me to keep that?" The hunter sounded beyond doubtful.

"For a whole year? Of course not. But I was hoping for maybe a week or two."

"I'll do my best,” Iolaus snorted. Then his eyes lit up and he broke out into a broad grin. “And as for your resolution, you should flirt more." He winked at his friend. “No strings attached, just harmless flirting.” Putting his hand against his chest he added sagely, “It’s good for the soul you know.”

The demigod sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose, "I can't believe I didn't see that one coming.”

“Oh c’mon, Hercules.” Gabrielle tried elbowing the demigod lightly in the ribs, which had about the same outcome as if she’d elbowed a stone wall. “It’s fun.” As if to demonstrate she did an exaggerated wink at Iolaus who grinned and waggled his eyebrows in return.

Ignoring the two blondes who seemed to have launched into a pantomime involving increasingly ridiculous and flirtatious behavior, Hercules turned to his more mature companion. “Xena, how 'bout you? Have you got any New Year's resolution?"

"No," she stated firmly, not taking her scowling eyes off the laughing blondes.

"I could be wrong, but I’m guessing Gabrielle's the one doing most of the household work, isn't she? Maybe you could promise to, I don't know, cook twice a week? Something like that," Hercules suggested, ever on the quest for a more fair and equal world.

The tall woman opened her mouth to reply, but her friend was faster. "I thought a New Year's resolution was supposed to do good, not food poison you."

Xena chose to ignore the younger woman. "I could promise to do the laundry more often, that's as far as I'll go."

"Actually, washing our clothes is the one thing you do help with, and you're not very good at it. I don't understand how you manage to shrink my top every single time."

"It's not that hard."

"What?"

"I said, neither do I."

Gabrielle looked suspiciously at the warrior princess, but the tall woman acted as if she didn't notice. "So, what's your resolution then?" she asked sweetly.

"I haven't been able to come up with anything good," the bard answered regrettably.

"You know, if you travel with Xena, you ought to learn how to defend yourself." Iolaus didn't see the two women exchange a private smile. "If you want to, I can teach you how to use that stick for more than walking," he offered.

"Thank you, I would love that,” Gabrielle answered somewhat exaggeratedly. “Hey, why don't we have our first lesson right now?"

"Sure, why not?" the blond man said with an oblivious smile as he followed the bard a few paces away from Xena and Hercules.

"I had this 'stick'," Gabrielle smiled at the word, "for some time now, and I already picked up a few things. Mind if I show you before we start?"

"Of course not. Go ahead."

The young woman started twirling the staff elegantly through the air around her. Iolaus just stared in shocked surprise. "You know, I think there's something I forgot to mention earlier when we discussed the previous year," she said with a soft voice.

"U-huh." Iolaus still couldn't believe his eyes. Suddenly he felt his feet being swept off the ground, and he landed on this back with a thud.

Gabrielle held her staff against the surprised man's throat. "I'm an amazon princess now."

The hunter called out to his friend, but his eyes never left the staff. "Herc, I think I just broke my New Year's resolution."

I will never not be baffled and disappointed that even in a chat group entirely centered around talking about Xena: Warrior Princess -- and one that billed itself as "the gay subtext one" that mocked "maintexter homophobia", even --

I still faced negativity for:

being transmasc/genderqueer and not hiding it

rejecting/gently mocking the idea of my having a hetero relationship with a cis man, basically mildly showing my homosexuality rather than being a full bisexual

as an extension of 2 -- being uncomfortable with male main characters (i.e. Joxer) continually sexually harassing female main characters. talking about it. (everyone else tolerated this and froze out my comments. in a fandom for a lesbian-couple-centered show?!)

Most members of the group were bi cis women, gender-conforming and while there was one who was nice and normal towards me, the rest just went silent and got weird whenever either of the above were just like... Not hidden. Not stifled.

I remember one or two talked about being in a hetero marriage with a cis straight man, and that that was their "only exception" and if they were single again tomorrow -- that they wished they were with women.

One of the Big Names there, in a "TMI" convo, admitted that she only felt comfortable talking to women when she was drunk, and barely even then. She also referenced "fucking (women) through men in a threesome", which to me those two put together shows strong fear of doing things that people like me (fully gay, butch, masculine to the point of trans) are known for doing: using a strapon to fuck your female partner yourself. Of course someone who secretly desires to do this would have that kink, if they were frightened to even talk to women.

Essentially, half the discomfort was deep jealousy. Because they did not have the bravery to live the life I was living. The repression there was SO REAL.

It also taught me how much fandom is an expression for painfully awkward, self-closeting women. (i.e. not forced to be, by abuse or shariah law or something.) One would say things randomly like "omg they're so gay" and I thought it was just fangirling. Later, she said that that was code for "I felt horny when I wrote that". This explains soooooo much about how online fandom works to me that I just didn't pick up on before. I was always feeling more of a nonsexual, sentimental, romantic emotion or just...general enthusiasm for the story's gay writing or whatever. Not something sexual.

Just. So many layers to that scene. Makes me glad I'm not a part of it.

But sad that it didn't work out in the end.

Right before I ended up leaving, a member joined whom I remembered from an older chat group. She would predate on the teens in the group, asking highly personal questions, preying whenever someone said something about their IRL that sounded sad (zeroing in on them at that moment and asking a lot about it). Like. Abuser behavior. She was in her 40s-50s, original era X:WP fandom. I almost publicly called her out, but my rep was already in the trash for just...being transmasc. So again I felt that I couldn't.

Just a shame. A literally lesbian-populated fandom that couldn't survive without it, for a show with multiple trans actresses in it and one actual trans episode, which embraces cis women characters' masculine side and puts it on proud display... which embraces their homosexuality (for Gabrielle) and bisexuality with a strong gay lean (for Xena).... Shouldn't be the place where this kind of shit is allowed to fly.

There was just so much petty, high-school-girl behavior and energy, too. Not possible to have direct conversations, seen as rude if you tried, meanwhile they were all headfucky and game-playing.

No place for a stereotypically blunt butch that likes healthy, direct discussions about life, fictional themes, and keepin' it real. Too below-the-surface, catty, etc.

Just. Ugh.
