Stupid self-indulgent Xenoblade Chronicles 3 AU idea: A good chunk of the main characters (i.e. the Ouroboros and the Heroes) are reincarnations of characters from Xenoblade 1 and 2.  MASSIVE XC3 SPOILERS BELOW THE CUT!

So if Origin contains ALL of the data and souls of both Bionis/Mechonis and Alrest, it stands to reason that it includes the souls of the dead. And if everyone in Aionios has a soul from Origin, it also stands to reason that some of them could be people we already know.

My (possibly final, possibly not) list goes as follows:

Lanz = Egil

Eunie = Kallian

Taion = Akhos

Ashera = Dunban

Triton = Xord

Valdi = Vanea

Alexandria = Patroka

Isurd = Jin

Miyabi = Haze

Ok this can't wait for the compilation post sorry. She just beat Mumkhar at Valak Mountain at roughly equal levels without Monado Enchant. She forgot to put Shulk in the party so she went in with Dunban, Riki, and Reyn (controlling Riki). That was genuinely a moment of really impressive skill and preparation: she's on top of her equipment and gems, she's been keeping up with skills and skill links, and she played extremely well to keep him toppled as much as possible and used chain attacks as best as she could. No one even went down until Dunban at the very end!

xbc3. is. so good. i'm nowhere near done (30h in lmao) and i just finished chapter 3 and i wanna talk abt it anyway!!!!!

the mystery is SO GOOD!! WHAT'S HAPPENING!!! why is the world like this indeed noah!!! i dont know!! cuz like. *somebody* has to have done this. what was the ouroboros egg?! what the fuck are the moebius gang? why is any of this? why are we all killing each other?

also like. i have played xbc1 and love it a lot and respectfully ignored xbc2 but the callbacks to both r insane. not just how the factions mirror the games ON A COMBAT LEVEL TOO (INSANE) but also how it just takes actual locations from both games

i cant recognize the xbc2 ones obvs but the xbc1 locations. colony 9 is literally just colony 9!!! IT'S THE SAME FUCKING VALLEY!! THE EXACT SAME VALLEY!!!!

and when i got to colony lambda i had to say out loud "FUCK OFF THAT'S MAKNA FALLS" like yeah. okay.

and it just adds to the mystery!!! cuz ykno, xbc1 ends with the creation of a new world, so is this the new world? did the two worlds get fused after both games?

also like!!! CONSUL N IS JUST NOAH WHAT IS THIS. is this a shulk-zanza situation or what. i mean eunie did find a corpse with her own name and everyone's a test tube baby so noah is probably this guy's clone right. right.

speaking of its kinda. mind boggling to grasp on how short of a timescale these characters operate. cuz they'll talk abt their legendary heroes who've done so much and these legendary figures r literally the same age as mio. and two years older max than the rest of the group. THAT'S RIDICULOUS, RIGHT? TWO YEARS? ethel and mio are the same fucking age! and yet these are the respected seniors! that's like me calling my sister an old crone! wack! vandham's right!!!! this isn't how the world is supposed to be!!

the character writingg is. excellent also. i love how every configuration of characters gets bonding moments, not just ouroboros pairs. like the tail end of chapter 3 is vry taion centric yeah (i love taion)

so we get this scene after eunie discovers her own corpse and unlocks ptsd and she's sitting by the fire and her hands are shaking. taion hands her a cup of tea and she makes fun of him out loud but we cut to her hands and see they've stopped shaking

that's such a good moment the fuck man. like, taion recognizes eunie's distress, but doesnt press her to talk about it, and eunie pokes fun at taion, but she's geniuenly grateful for his company. considering what a dickweed (affectionate) eunie is that's amazing.

and after that is a moment where taion admits to lanz that he's jealous of lanz's self confidence, but lanz admits he's not self confident at all. he just cant stand still and allow himself to think, or else the doubt starts setting in. he has to keep moving or else. he cant doubt himself once cuz then he'll doubt himself forever.

and when it happens, this is still kind of in the taion centric stretch with his colony lambda backstory, but this moment sets up how lanz starts doubting himself and feeling guilty after joran shows up as a consul. AND in the moment lanz tells taion how noah will always tell him to look forward WHICH NOAH THEN DOES AFTER JORAN!

it's just good okay!!!!! and i'm still reeling from "consul n is just noah lmao" except my joycons' battery ran out and i want to play on the big screen

i'm now fondly recalling my joke reading of zanza and meyneth as "your divorced parents arguing about how to raise their kids" and now i'm giggling about it cuz i'm still kind of right i think

xbc3 launches straight in into "war is hell" whereas xbc1 started as a more straightforward revenge plot only to pull zhe rug out from under you but both r vry good in their own way.

even with all the callbacks, xbc3 still has its own story and themes and even the fused environment feels new amd fresh to explore thanks to the changed lanscape and beautiful music.

my one complaint about xenoblade 3 is like almost every monster is hostile for some reason and there's no hostile indicators, like how in 1 you could turn on enemy type tags so you could avoid hostile monsters or know of a monster is kindred or hostile to you via detecting sound or ether arts, so im like. trying to explore new areas and take in the atmosphere of this new world and bathe in nostalgia and then im being chased by skeeters of all things. why are skeeters hostile now. they were never hostile.

#also normal mode is hard mode in disguise what da hell #even on my very first playthrough of xenoblade 1 when i got stuck on fighting xord i didn't struggle this hard with early bosses.... #like i feel like a xenoblade veteran shouldn't have a hard time fighting bosses on normal mode of all things #🤔 #it's a good game but i am finding some Flaws that have me going 'why did they do this....' #hades.txt

Xenoblade 1 thus far be like:

The Monado: Can't damage organic beings but can only damage mechanical beings

Mechons with Faces: Can speak, have red streaming things in their "arms" and "legs", and are immune to the Monado. Always claim that they want to eat the humans for some strange reason that we certainly can't figure out.

Metal Face: Has Mumkar's voice and claws and behaves as though he already knows Shulk and co.

Xord: Stops in his tracks when you asks his name and wonders if "he ever really had one"

Fiora: Dies in the early game but somehow is playable (AND gains exp!), has equipment, and has Heart to Hearts. Is "eaten" by a Mechon shortly after dying.

Dickson: The one time he is playable he doesn't have skill tree link or gain exp, is a guest party member for the rest of the game, has no equipment, and he makes a comment about having to "deceive those kids" en route to the Entia's place

At long last, I've built the Weapons Bracket

We'll start off with Round 1, which is almost a bit of a preliminary round, seeing as it's only 14 matches, as opposed to the 32 round 2 will be. One thing to note is that unless I recall incorrectly, the Hunter Biter (Riki's starting weapon) and the Monapon (the joke weapon dropped by Bana) look identical. Neither of them will see any action before round 2 though, so we have until then to figure something out.

i've been watching yellowjackets this month and obvs i've seen hannibal and yet there's just something about the cannibalism / human consumption in xenoblade chronicles that just fucks with my head so much more

i think it's the like... so obviously there's the size difference, there's the being eaten alive

but i was chatting abt it earlier and i think what really fucks with me is like

so all cannibalism narratives have an element of what you're eating becoming part of you

it is the most complete way to own and dominate another person, eg w hannibal lecter, its a way to subsume their power into yours, eg w the dragon eating the painting

its a very complete intimacy? eg in Yellowjackets, shauna biting into jackie's ear

and i know there are cultures that practice compassionate cannibalism like, as an act of processing grief?

esp bc in yellowjackets too like. there's the necessity of the situation, right? they're horrified at what they're doing, it's anathema to their cultural ideals

BUT they are starving. literally, they are starving

in hannibal, obvs hannibal lives in luxury now, but his predilection for cannibalism is borne of trauma, of past starvation, and obvs there was an aspect of consuming his own grief w his consumption of his sister mischa

in xenoblade chronicles like... firstly, it's the fact that the mechon are a different people to the homs - they are establishing themselves as a predator group and homs and nopon as a prey group, right?

and esp then like. the cattle comparisons etc become more frightening

esp given that they leave the colonies for a year, THEN attack, and obvs it was for their own recovery but also, the way the faced mechons then FEAST on some of the ppl, it feels like fuckin. the start of a hunting season

obviously there's the particular violence created by the size differential, like ppl are continuously dwarfed by an entire hand or tentacle in which they're held and pinned, and ofc like. if they're bitten into it will go right THROUGH them

that fear of consumption is very visceral and complete, you know? and esp the implication of potentially being alive during the process of digestion, like, that's horrifying in Nope but Jean Jacket isn't like. gleeful or bragging about it, it's just an animal

Xord is diff

The bit where he's laughing about eating Juju and says "i'll keep him safe... in my belly!" or something similar went RIGHT through me

like there is so much glee, there is so much sadistic joy and performance in the consumption of the colonists by the mechons

this sense that they're an overabundant crop, and therefore can be devoured in this act of like, complete gluttony? that they can eat them not just for the nourishment but the delight of it, not at their taste or nutrition either, but at their suffering and grief?

and most of all what really skeeves me out is that like. they take such joy in eating them, and at the same time, the process of eating them gives them STRENGTH. like its a very literal exploration of taking on your enemy's strengths by consuming parts of them

by eating homs, they too become immune to the monado - they assimilate the homs' strengths into their own bodies, and having done so, are even better placed to exploit and destroy them

aaaaaaaah. basically.
