I'm so tired of people complaining about MM's portrayal of Thetis, like I generally don't like to post negativity because no. And I'm not the type to complain about "media literacy" because half of the people who complain about it don't even know what media literacy and critical thinking is, and the other half are just self important arseholes who believe that their only redeeming quality is that someone in high school told them that they were smart

But to anyone who ever said that MM was demonizing Thetis. I'm taking away all the complex women characters until you learn how to be nice

MM wrote about how a woman that was forced to have a child she probably didn't even want, then come to love him, only to learn that she was going to lose him very soon anyway

She was panicking, so she tried to be controlling in hopes that she could achieve this one thing that maybe could prevent her child from dying

And she was so focused on protecting him, that she didn't realized that she was hurting him

In the end, she has to come to terms that in her way to protect this image she had of him in her head, she ended up hurting her real son and didn't even knew him

Thats why she asks Patroclus to tell her about Achilles in the end, to understand who was he beyond what she wanted him to be and comes to terms with the fact that she could've spend all that time being happy with him

But then I see people going "ThEtIs ShOUlD bE a GoOd mOm"

Like of course, reduce this complex character that this woman is, an imperfect person and an even more imperfect mother to just a stereotypical good mom without other personality trait other than being a good mom; thats sooo feminist 🙄 (it's sarcasm)

(And why should she ever be kind to Patroclus when shes A GODDESS!?!?!? Patroclus is like an insect to her!!!!)

I'm not saying that MM is beyond criticism, like why are Menoetius and Pyrrhus soooo one dimensional. But when you're criticizing some part of the book that's not even true, it makes me think that some of you went "I personally don't like it therefore it's bad iabdkabhsishsysk"

Shocking, but you don't liking something doesn't mean it's inherently bad

as much of an lover i am of hurt no comfort i very rarely write it lmao but a lot of my tsoa fics had sad endings. autumn’s coming around is the first one that popped into mind, but that’s at least slightly open ? i’ll hold your hand while you drown, less so.

I feel like a lot of my fics have equally happy endings haha, the one that came to mind was our hair tangled in the breeze, simply because its a happy ending canon complaint tsoa fic which is a feat lmao

I’d love to continue for everyone im about to prove wrong, and I think I even have a mostly finished chapter lying around somewhere, but I’ve just not had the inspiration rip.

I think I’m good at writing characters in general, especially when it’s from their pov. first person pov my beloved.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I’m not really a person who uses a lot of metaphors of writes flowery language, but i wish i was!! i love very beautiful language and poetic writing but i just don’t do that that much im pretty straight forward, which isn’t a bad thing but I wish i could expand a bit more.

takes me out the story way too much, it’s fine if it’s like one word every now and then but nah. ive read a couple of young royals fics, and as a swedish speaker its a bit jarring to suddenly have swedish words there lmao

When It Is Just Us

This is my first ever made shit so yeah ik it sucks dont come at me but give me good criticismim. Its Patrochilles and yeah :)

At night after yet another talking with his mother, Achilles comes to the tent quiet as he cares to be. I stare at him, in my mouth I taste bitterness like a mistaken for ripe mango that is hard barely containing juices. One end of my lips curl up leaving the other half down, a snarl it seems. “What?”Even though Achilies does not face me, his hair covers a bit of the side of his face as he sits with his legs crossed on the mat, looking at his joined hands. He had still said to me, ‘what’, just normally, but with a little bite like I was bothering him. What he really means is ‘what's the reason for your face looking like that’, he sees me eying him in his peripherals. 

What?”, I say appalled, mocking and ready to fight him again, a battle of high and intensed vocals. “You know what! DO not play stupid with me!”. He still has no reaction. No facial expression as my voice rips out, making me feel awkward by how loud I am in the normal quiet.         He looks blank as he slowly, nonchalantly turns his head at me, looking like he feels nothing, his face says nothing. Maybe he really doesn't feel anything. I’ll make him feel something. “Is this about that girl?.. Again?’’. He says as if he doesn't know why I bring it up once more, of course he knows I’ve been gnawing at his head all yesterday and today about it. “Yes. And as I have to say it again, she is not just some girl, Okay?!. She's a Lady, a true lady, a real friend to me and you would just let some grubby man lay her hands on her??” I hate that I have to be the one that makes Achilles’ head ache with my voice alone but I am serious about this. Bristes has become very dear to me in the time she's been here, she is close to my heart. I know I love her, but not as a lover. Not as I feel for Achilles, but I know - I feel it, that if she were to leave I’d feel lonely and if she were hurt I’d cry as I help her to her aid, for her to die I’d weep, and her essence disrespected I’d stand for her. 

Although Bristes doesn't think I should be fighting with Achilles, this  it’s a issue I can't step off of. “Achilles!-" I start, “Dont. I don’t want to hear about this girl any longer. You act as if shes important or something, what is it, huh? Do you love her? Is she dear to you?” Actually she is dear to me but at the time all I could do was stand struck by him yelling at me. Actually yelling AT me. “Uh, Yes. She is dear to me, she's my friend and you know what Agamemnon will do to her if you just stay back and let him take her. Why would you want that” He stands “Of course she’s just your friend. I should’ve never asked to take her. You do love her don’t. Why does it matter so much? I thought you loved me, I thought WE cared about each other!” I can see how this situation is getting out of hand, Achilles is misunderstanding me and I see his face turning hot as pink rises into his face. As I think this, Achilles is pacing around in the tent in a skinny oval on his side of the tent muttering to himself how me and Brietes must have been quietly flirting while he’s been out fighting. I want to reassure him but the way he's acting now I might have thought of courting her and taking her up on have a child.

Too bad I wonder how he must feel fighting with me after never in his life having an odd thought of me. 

    “How dare you,” He says back at me. “I cared for you and you you would just Ahguhhh!” He yells in annoyance at me. “No, Achilles I’m just saying, have you no moral, no passion, Anything. Do you understand the amount of hurt rape will bring a sweet girl like her? And I’m not saying I don't care for you I do, you know I do. Why would I sleep beside you if I didn't? Why would I be beside you still even in this war, this battle if I had not cared for you? You think I do it for laughs? For Fun??” He looks at me upset, he pouts understanding but still aggravated. *sigh* “Whatever,” Achilles says, turning from me, bringing his hands up to rub along his face gripping his hair a little. It diffuses our yelling and we talk at normal pitches now.

 “What do you want?” 

“I want you to go get her back and say you’re sorry”

 “Why would I do that?” 

“..To save Briestes.. It would make me happy”

“I can’t” 

“But you can”

“What about my honor Pat.. I’ve done all this and in their eyes she's just a woman. What would they think of me?”

Currently Reading:  Ten Days That Shook The World by John Reed (don't ask why or how, but my autistic Special Interest of choice for the past 2-3 weeks has been the political intrigue surrounding WWI and how it fuelled the October Revolution so I've been reading any book/watching any documentary I can get my hands on about it), and I've also been listening to The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath while doing chores and stuff

What are you wearing right now: My fluffiest house robe and my fluffy slippers and super comfy and soft socks, and yes I'm still in pyjamas

Last show: In the past couple years I've become so bad with starting shows and actually sticking with them lol, but I did do a rewatch of Neon Genesis Evangelion fairly recently..... OH and I watched Interview with the Vampire with @baejax-the-great a little while back which was super fun!! (because apparently I can't watch something unless I can shit talk or go feral over it with Bae LOL)

Favourite colour: Oooh that's such a hard question to answer!! The first colour that comes to mind is blue -- I always gravitate towards some version of blue, and currently it's deep navy blue, but I also own a lot of powder blue stuff. It's either that or baby pink or cream tbh, but I also own a good amount of gold/mustard things as well. Yellow makes me happy. I find jewel green incredibly pretty though I weirdly don't own anything of that colour (which reminds me I should perhaps make that a priority)

Current obsession: I'm guessing this is a fandom related question, so I'm going to be predictable and say that I'm, as usual, obsessed with Patrochilles and most of the other pairings I am currently writing, even though anxiety over real life stuff hasn't let me engage with them as much as I want lately. I do think about them a lot and have lots of ideas for new stories, and I'm also working my way back into catching up with fics I love, which I haven't been able to do in a while despite the joy it normally gives me. Brains can be very uncooperative at times, but what can you do about it lol. 

Unrelated Obsession: As I mentioned earlier I have been obsessed with Russian and generally European politics of the early 20th century for some weird ass reason lmao, but I've also been reading an in-depth analysis of Aeschylus' life and work I found in some corner of my library, which led me to looking up some academic papers about it, which led me to signing up for an online course about Athenian tragedy, so um?? I don't know what it is with me and going down those endless rabbit holes lately ahah. 

Any pets: I have a cat, aka a baby and a bastard and a devil spawn all wrapped in one (he is currently sleeping like an angel after attempting to tear down the curtains)

Do you have a crush on anyone: Um. Like, on a real life person? A fictional person? I do have crushes on several of my mutuals so if y'all are reading it I'm kissing you on the forehead MWAH

Favourite fictional character: I can't choose, don't make me choose!!!!!!! I can't choose between my children. But if I had to choose then maybe.... Patroclus? But also, Achilles? The last place you traveled: It feels like it's been SO long since I've traveled anywhere. I went to Aegina island last summer but since then I haven't been outside the city for even a DAY and it's been driving me crazy. I just need to see some green and blue and listen to nothing but birds or waves or the wind (at this point I'll even take the rooster that woke me up EVERY DAMN MORNING when I was in Aegina lmao). I'm planning on going on a day trip to Mycenae soon though so I'm very excited about that 😄

Reporters descend on him.

Patroclus hadn’t realized that Phoenix had banned them until his races were done for the day, but now that he’s proven to the world that he’s just as fast in Seoul as he is in Greece, they are hungry for his attention. They mob him on the track, and he smiles, still flushed from running, takes his hair down, and answers their questions. Yes, he knows he’s the youngest in this year’s heat for all the races. Yes, it’s an honor for him to be here. The training has been difficult. What he’s gotten to see of Seoul has been very beautiful. Yes, he knows he’s competing in more track and field events than anyone else here, than anyone else in recent history. The schedule is grueling, but he’s optimistic, and even if he doesn’t medal this year, there will always be next time.

Patroclus almost laughs at that last answer. Achilles wants to win. It’s not even a question for him—he’s going to win. But this is charm that he puts on, flashing those green eyes, touching a hand to a wrist, smiling just the right amount. He is youthful athleticism embodied, and he knows it.

Patroclus loves and hates this about him—how he flirts with everyone, how he tosses his hair and tells them what they want to hear. It’s an act, mostly, though he never takes it too far. He doesn’t like misleading people. He spends a minute, maybe two, making them feel like they are the only person in the universe, and then he politely backs away into pleasant neutrality, like a doll that puts himself back on the shelf. Man or woman, young or old, they leave the conversation all smiles, sometimes blushing, and primed to think highly of the earnest, well-spoken young man that has impressed himself upon their memory. “He’s going places,” they say. “A bright future, that one.”

Patroclus would hate it more if he didn’t know how much Achilles disliked it. The attention is a double-edged sword that leaves him contemplative and more tired than the racing did. It’s the kind of thing that people don’t talk about, but Achilles brought it up once, years ago, after a false start that should have gotten him disqualified from a race and an argument among the coaches that ended with him having a second chance at it. “People are nicer to you when you’re pretty,” he’d complained bitterly in the locker room after he won. “Isn’t that messed up? It’s not like it will make them prettier if I like them or… or better. They let me race because they like the look of me. They should treat everyone fairly. But they don’t. I could be terrible, but people are nice to me for no reason.” He blew his golden hair out of his face and then turned a weak smile to Patroclus. “I guess they’re probably nice to you, too.”

They weren’t, but Patroclus didn’t tell him that. Achilles was probably embarrassed for bringing up such an obvious difference between their experiences and wanted to make him feel better, but Patroclus didn’t mind. He wanted his true thoughts about it all.

“Sometimes I want to smear myself in mud before I go out there. Or cut all my hair off or just… I want to know that I’m the best without the rest of it. But I’m… I’m too scared to do that.”

“Timers don’t lie,” Patroclus had said back then. And I’d like you anyway, he’d wanted to say. “And if anything, your hair only slows you down because of the drag.”

Achilles had smiled at that, all those years ago. And he’d kept the hair.

Apollo!

How I feel about this character hehe he's definitely my favorite Greek god, I love reading his myths they're just great and his character is wonderful. He's so complex and I love how he's incredibly human for a god and how he wears his heart on his sleeve and how he's a good parent and how his immaturity and pride can get the best of him- I can gush about Apollo for a while lmao, he's wonderful I really, really want to see more good content with him in adaptations and such,, fgjhf there isn't much stuff with him that does him justice and it makes me sad,,,

All the people I ship romantically with this character Hyacinthus my beloved- also Admetus, Cyrene, the Muses....there's plenty of nice Apollo ships (which don't end in tragedy!)

My non-romantic OTP for this character Hermes and Apollo's bond makes me very soft, also obviously Apollo and Artemis- oh! Also Apollo and any of his kids (yes this includes Chiron, duh) hehe :D

My unpopular opinion(s) about this character

Hmm, ok I have a bunch so I'm gonna filter this down to my Main Three Ones 1) I'm not personally into either the "Apollo's an unproblematic Best Sun Boi" stuff or the "Apollo's a Monster" stuff? Like Let him be a complex character who screws up and makes bad decisions and is selfish but also genuinely means well and has a good heart. It's greek myths, everyone is a little messed up and Apollo being a complex deity is part of the reason why he's so interesting! Why dilute his character? 2) Idk why people don't talk about this more but Apollo Hates Achilles because Achilles killed two of his sons, one of them being a literal child, and so he's perfectly valid to hate Achilles. Like I think he killed Pat for a number of reasons but a big one was Petty Revenge. Tbh I don't really care for rewrites that make Apollo secretly Care about Patrochilles during the events of the Iliad and I also think that Apollo would still be angry at Achilles even after the Trojan War's over. Dude's allowed to be petty. I'd be down for adaptations/stories that explore more about Achilles and Apollo but I'd want them to touch on the fact that Apollo has his side of the story too, things are more complicated than they seem. 3) Apollo isn't dumb!!!! He's smart! He's the god of Knowledge for crying out loud! It's more accurate that he's High Int Low Wis if you wanna talk about his bad decision making tendencies

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. Uhhhh I'm gonna be talking about like Potential adaptations because fdghhfdg I'm not into calling Greek myths "canon" lmao, it just feels....weird to do so But yee!! I'd love to see more about Apollo being a parent because he's such a good dad (and PJO did him so dirty >:T there's so much wasted potential there with him), or more with his relationship with his siblings- especially Hermes I'd also love to see like maybe a coming of age story with him, I think that would be very interesting lol Or maybe like Apollo in modern adaptations being less like a stereotypical fuckboi and more like his actual personality? Like if he had to be put in any box it'd probably be like the high strung prideful perfectionist with too many hobbies who has a sensitive side, which yeah isn't really a box because it's hard to put him in a stereotypical trope like that? Ghgh My thoughts on adapting Apollo could be an essay on it's own fgdhjfgd

Also I'd like to see smth to do with reincarnation, or smth that explores the differences between humans and gods with him as a central character? Have a couple ideas regarding that

My Guilty Pleasure thing that I'd like to do with him is just take just about any comedic Nanami episode from Revolutionary Girl Utena and make it Greek Gods with Apollo as Nanami- but specifically Cowbell of Happiness, I think that would be a good ep to do with him. Idk, I think it'd be funny, and that it fits him in multiple ways All in all, I would just be super into like just about anything that explores his personality in a way that is true/respectful to his myths and character ^^ GIVE ME A CHARACTER AND I’LL BREAK THEM DOWN

- it’s clear and blatantly obvious to everyone who’s ever laid eyes on achilles that he’s the most beautiful person on the planet, he looks like a painting & greek statue brought to life, he knows his beauty but honestly doesn’t always give that much thought to it - it’s very natural to him

- i think he has a melodic, deep voice that literally is one of the best sounds you’d hear in your life

- achilles eyes look like the softest green grass, looks like a light shade of mint, looks like sea green! his hair is like a halo of golden strands - his skin is pretty soft and a golden tan color, has the most lovely smile and laugh and no one can resist this beautiful bastard

- multi-talented obviously, he’s an ace at everything he does and never comes in last, is a winner in all aspects and while he has pride in this, he cares more about how he himself is emotionally after meeting patroclus, he takes more pride in his love, compassion, and humanity due to his adoration of patroclus

- he took up art & sculpting because he wanted to paint patroclus and put it on his wall and wanted to sculpt patroclus’ body because that would require very deep research if you catch my drift

- achilles smells like honey & almonds, pomegranates, and the sea and it’s intoxicating

- one time he ran over to see patroclus to go talk to him and that’s one of the only times in his life that he lost his footing and fell on his face kdksks patroclus was like “OMG ARE YOU OKAY???” and achilles like the smooth dude he is gave a thumbs up, groaned, and said “looks like i fell for you” and patroclus just thought “bro why am i love w him”

- achilles is a fellow bastard clown! he’s a bad bitch and that’s that on THAT

- idk why i think achilles is a scorpio kdjdnd he has that Energy

- achilles is a master strategizer and also runs on his impulses, the most important thing in the universe to him is patroclus and his goal was/is/always will be to keep him safe & protected

- i’ve seen fanart of them as modern characters and i’m........ i’m in LOVE w that.

- achilles would be the most popular guy in school bc he’s beautiful, nice, honest, trustworthy, and intelligent (he’s the captain of the varsity track team, lead his team to GOLD!) but while he is considered popular he literally doesn’t notice and only hangs out w patroclus, and patroclus is a sweet, soft, beautiful boy whomst everyone is in love with bc he’s just so damn sweet and helpful and he is the president of the poetry club and achilles joins and just fawns over him the entire time

- ok modern au over (it will never be over for me let it be known i will make as many headcanons for modern!patrochilles as possible you just gotta let me know if you want it <3)

- i think that achilles is most drawn and comfortable at the sea, not so much because his mother is thetis but because in the sea all he has to do is let the current take him and the color of the sea which is a beautiful turquoise brings him happiness (because one time patroclus wore a tunic that same color, and that day he was so happy, so now that’s achilles favorite color)

- achilles is known to be very honest and simple? but i just think that he has no room for fallacies and just wants to lay it all out on the table, he believes in action and esp when it comes to love, he wants to experience it fully bc he knows gods, demigods, anyone and everyone doesn’t always get to experience true love & he has that with patroclus

- achilles is taller than patroclus & likes to hold stuff above his head bc it makes patroclus pout and he has to climb and give achilles a kiss (except one time patroclus just kicked achilles in the shin and had a shit eating grin bc hehe that’s funny and he deserved it)

- when achilles laughs, birds start chirping + sun starts shining brighter + world looks more beautiful / when he’s angry, the world has a dark tinge to it, the currents are hazardous, and there’s a sense of dread in the air (but don’t worry, achilles is often happy w patroclus bc i said so)

listen y’all i’m a tSoA stan too but we CANNOT possibly pretend to convince ourselves that madeline miller didn’t do other characters dirty to advance/give sympathy to her OTP. in some cases common iliad interpretation is subverted which is cool but other times facts are straight up IGNORED. it even happens with the main character like !!! patroclus’s funeral is before priam comes to beg for hector’s body back, but miller needed another reason for achilles to gently angst and correct a Straight Fool saying “sorry for the loss of your friend” so fuck the iliad’s timeline! it also probably wouldn’t do to have achilles squash reader sympathy by dragging hector’s corpse all around patroclus’s tomb but anyway.....

shit man before i even talk about pyrrhus i GOTTA say that she made some Real Questionable choices about patroclus’s representation too. i love that boy, i really do, and i think if miller’s characterization existed without precedent it would be totally fine but the undeniable uwu-ification of Soft Boi Sweet Baby patroclus is !! fucking rude and also pretty lame in imagination as it seems to say that one of our gays has to “really behave like the girl” and that’s !! wack !! yeah patroclus isn’t the legendary warrior achilles is.. but that DOESN’T MEAN you make him constitutionally unable to fight and relegate him to the office of femininity in order to code him gay!! it’s demeaning !! YES he can be good at medicine and YES he can think the war is terrible given his specific circumstances of “destined to lose my love in the war” and he can be sympathetic as a conduit character but it’s pretty fucking broke that miller clearly thought that it was necessary to make his character feminine in order to overtly show the gay relationship. it reeks of the “okay but which of you gays is really the man and which is really the woman” rhetoric

so KNOWING DEAD ASS that miller fudges characters to get the means for her love story, you gotta admit her treatment of pyrrhus is really fucking wack. yeah accounts of him generally seem to concur that he was Harsh and Rigid and Made Questionable Human Sacrifices but the specific way miller chooses to portray him is... hhhhh. okay so she wraps it in this guise of “he’s had all  the humanity bred out of him by thetis and therefore He’s Evil And We Hate Him, right?” but we’ve spent this WHOLE ASS BOOK talking about how war and society at large make monsters of us and that even a pacifist like patroclus becomes consumed by the glory of battle in the heat of it, so making your Unredeemable Asshole someone who’s human sense to hate violence is worn down by gods sort of mixes our symbolism up. is it man that corrupts himself? the gods? society? miller’s fucking up the clarity of that message with thetis creating this pyrrhus. it’s ALSO fucked because we spent the whole book building sympathy for achilles by patroclus saying “wow if achilles were raised by his mother he would have been cold and heartless and that makes me feel for the softness that could be lost in his demigod body” but pyrrhus LITERALLY UNDERWENT that tragic dehumanizing and suddenly we’re supposed to hate that instead of empathize with it! 

and of COURSE we had to put the last nail in the coffin of empathy for pyrrhus by having him try to r*ape briseis because miller has been using r*pe as a shorthand for evil this whole time and that sure doesn’t feel tacked on or oversimplified at all! and we have Woke Boy Patroclus whose opinions about women’s rights are SO anachronistic that everyone else looks like a monster (to be fair, it IS monstrous, but i can see the pandering in patroclus being our Feminist Good Guy from a mile away).

and making pyrrhus your plot contrivance not  to bury achilles and patroclus together right away?? idk abt that one buddy! feels like u needed just 1 more homophobic hurdle to overcome and u dropped that burden on pyrrhus! because pyrrhus being the hetero asshole ? y’all EVER read up on pyrrhus pre-troy? the whole ass episode with philoctetes? ENORMOUSLY GAY (even when i don’t mention how some modern retellings make it explicitly gay). the ONLY way i buy pyrrhus trying to stop achilles’ associated memory with patroclus is as desperation for honor and HMMMM WOULD YOU LOOK AT THAT! that’s the theme we always return to as achilles’ tragic flaw and that is made SYMPATHETIC AS HELL in achilles because when prophesies control your life and you can’t choose happiness, memory and honor are all you have, but when PYRRHUS makes bad choices to maintain honor and memory then suddenly it’s entirely unsympathetic and evil of him!

i’ll say it again i fucking love the song of achilles but i can do that while also acknowledging that it told a specifically manipulated and narrow narrative that left lots of character complexity on the cutting room floor

He grins. “Yeah. We make a pretty handsome couple.”

When Achilles asks Patroclus to be his date for his rich, eccentric great-uncle’s seventh wedding, Patroclus can see the rationale––they’re best friends, and they’ve been inseparable for years. It's intended as a small favor.

There’s one catch, though: It’s all fake. But Patroclus is actually in love with Achilles, and this very well may kill him.

A Californian, fake-dating, modern high school AU in which Patroclus deals with Achilles’s crazy family and barely survives his not-so-unrequited feelings.

This has been a WIP for a few months now... I’m so excited that it’s finished! I think Patroclus and Achilles deserve literally the entire world a little bit of happiness, so please enjoy this painless, happy one shot (and thank you to @scone-lover for beta-ing) 💛

r/AITA: AITA for avenging my boyfriend?

I [26 M] will admit that I’ve made many mistakes in the past. I know for a fact that I have anger issues, and I don’t have the best relationship with either of my parents. I lived with my dad growing up, and my mom lived with her family. My relationship with her became really strained when I started dating my boyfriend [28 M] when we were teenagers. I don’t think Mom is homophobic, but she was definitely unsupportive because of his past and his family.

My boyfriend and I got drafted for war (kind of against my will, but I wanted to fight, so it’s a long story) and my mom was super upset. She wanted me to hide so that I wouldn’t have to fight, so I left my boyfriend at home and let my mom drag me away. She even set me up with a girlfriend––she got pregnant, and I didn’t even know I had a son until recently. Either way, I was discovered, and I left for the war. My boyfriend came with me.

Fast forward 9 years, and I wasn’t being given the respect that I deserved. I argued with a superior and, because he wouldn’t let me have any sort of command, I basically benched myself and refused to fight. My boyfriend agreed that he was in the wrong but told me to stop being difficult and respect my commander’s authority. I refused, and I feel really bad about it now.

Basically, my boyfriend and the strategists decided to dress him in my uniform (I was kind of a big deal and a desirable target for the other side). He eliminated one of their biggest fighters, but he was unfortunately killed by their first-in-command. Understandably, I was super upset and distraught by this, and I wanted revenge for him.

I went out into the field and basically went on a rampage. I found their first-in-command, killed him, and hitched him to my chariot and dragged him around the walls of Troy.

Honestly, I get why people might be upset with me. But I think I’m at least a little bit in the right here. AITA?

okay okay i know i went a bit mia but what if achilles and patroclus are constantly slipping lines of poetry into their conversations and their friends are like "wtf" when they end up just glaring at each other because how dare you use wordsworth to insult me but no one else has a clue what's going on

i !!!! love this !!!! i’m crying i just can’t believe these Nerds. but okay i hear your patrochilles using poetry to subtly rile each other up and i raise you patrochilles having an entire Language through seemingly inane lines of poetry. like yes they absolutely slip it into conversation to annoy each other, but they both love poetry and they both love each other, right?

so consider: achilles noticing patroclus isn’t holding up so great but maybe they’re out in a group and it isn’t really the setting for a serious conversation so he taps patroclus’ hand lightly and just says “with the breath, / Smiles, tears, of all my life” and patroclus tenses, relaxes, breathes, says “better after death.” and smiles.

or: patroclus can tell achilles is stressed about something or other and he knows achilles won’t want to talk about it so he slips an arm around his waist, rests his forehead between the juncture of achilles’ shoulder blades and whispers “For the blessed Graces prefer to look on one who wears flowers / and turn away from those without a crown.” and a little of the tension slips out of achilles because it’s okay. he’s good enough. he’s loved.

-he gets a while to get tipsy, he doesn’t usually drink at all, actually, since he got his license he’s been carrying les amis around. ANYWAYS after 6/7 shots of plain vodka he gets v eloquent, this meaning:

-he has the most obscure knowledge about the most obscure things •you have no idea how many nsfw latin and greek poems he knows by heart •he once told everyone that Plato and Alexander the Great had a debate about who topped in the Patrochilles •everybody died right in that moment •once sang Catullus’ poem about the poet having a boner and needing his girl to come over to Courf, Courf was very pleased, the other 40 people at the bar were not

-Tipsy Ferre is very loud. He usually talks in a moderate tone but as soon as he gulps on the last shot he engages full megaphone mode

- He picks up random fights. More than once he barely made it home. Bahorel had to physically restrain him from going to punch a dude he heard talking shit about people with disabilities. The only reason he did that was because Ferre couldn’t really walk

- honestly I mostly love the idea of Ferre being a drunk Enciclopedia • want to know why that word sounds that way? He’ll just deconstruct it right in front of you • right after answering you, though, he’d tell you about how this swear word and this other swear word in another language are similar and come from the same word

- Tipsy Ferre will quote random literary/cinematic pieces • “Would you mind giving me that fork?” “To quote Hamlet, Act I scene III: NO” • *right in front of his dorm’s door* “lasciate ogni speranza, o voi che entrate” “Ferre was that Dante?” “YES ENJOLRAS IT WAS DANTE DO YOU HAVE A PROB-” “okay stop please shhhh”

A lil bit of Patrochilles silliness from Void as we reach the end

“All kings answer to their subjects or they lose that title,” Patroclus says in his best imitation of an angry Achilles.

The formerly surly prince grins. “He did not.”

“He did. He very much did, stranger. I was not there, but rumors travel quickly, and Achilles himself confirmed it.”

Zagreus’s laughter peals like bells across the glade, and Patroclus joins him. Easier to laugh about it now, when it doesn’t spell the end of his happiness.

“That would be a welcome sound,” Achilles calls from where he approaches, “If I knew it wasn’t at my expense.”

“Are you kidding?” Zagreus beams, still bearing a very large smile as he dashes to his side, “You’re my hero.”

Patroclus has to hide his expression as Achilles demurs, “Oh, don’t say that, lad. Not to me.”

But Patroclus can see the puppy dog eyes of the prince, and it’s far too late for him. He drapes his arms across Achilles’ back and rests his chin on shoulder. “Yes, the ego of Aristos Achaion might get inflated,” Patroclus warns very seriously. “But you should know, it’s nothing compared to what he said to Agamemnon.”

“Ugh,” Achilles groans, “Do not speak that name to me.” He pinches his nose as if that headache is still fresh, and maybe it always will be. He sighs and mutters, “At least there is nobody to remember what I said to Hector.”

Patroclus straightens. “What did you say to Hector?” Achilles face falls, and Patroclus presses closer to him. “Achilles? Tell me. What did you say when you met him on the battlefield?”

“Nothing,” Achilles lies, “I said nothing at all to Hector, and any poets saying otherwise greatly exaggerated the exchange.”

“You better tell me why you’re here, stranger, because I will be spending the rest of Achilles’ break wresting this information from him.”

“You can spend the rest of your afterlife this way, but I am not talking.”

A challenge if ever Patroclus heard one. Achilles’ chin is set in an act of stubbornness that will take hours if not days to defeat, but they have time, here, in Elysium. Patroclus is no stranger to the long siege.

“I would gladly help you,” Zagreus says, “But I’m afraid I hoped I might engage you otherwise tonight. My family is holding a feast, a reconciliation feast of sorts, and I hoped that you, Patroclus, sir, would accompany me.”

Patroclus ceases his bothering of Achilles to take this in. The puppy dog eyes, he realizes, are not reserved for Achilles alone. “You wish me to go to a feast with all the gods of Olympus and the Underworld?” Patroclus asks. He raises an eyebrow at Achilles, who, by his unflinchingly bland expression, knew the invitation was coming.

“It would be my honor, sir, if you could join us.”

Patroclus continues his hard stare into the side of Achilles’ head. “In my experience, invitations such as these are not choices so much as they are summons.”

“It is up to you, sir, if you should like to come, but it would please me very much.”

Patroclus considers. “Is Apollo going to be there?”

Achilles steps in. “Pat—”

 “I jest, I jest.” He holds his hands up to prove the point. Still, what can a shade even do at a feast? “Will there be wine at this party?” he asks.
