Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress

A fantastic anime that makes it difficult to get into.  This is because all of the Arc Words are left untranslated.

Kabane:  Semi traditional zombies.  You get bit, you become infected.  They aren’t slower, just stupider.  They they are still smart enough to wait in ambush, and the most powerful of which can remember how to fight with weapons.  They crave blood.  They have a glowing metal cage around their heart, called a Heart Cage.  The metal is too strong for traditional katana and firearms to break through.  Note, it’s a heavily steampunk setting and they use steam powered guns, because fuck you it’s awesome.  You have to destroy their heart or decapitate them to kill them.

Kabaneri:  The virus has to infect the brain to turn them into Kabane.  If you can stop an infection before it reaches the brain they still retain their human intellect and emotions.  Their body is Kabane, and still crave blood.  So, kind of like half-zombies.  They have increased strength, (likely access to hysterical strength), don’t have to worry about being bitten, and can regenerate from anything that wouldn’t otherwise kill a Kabane.

Bushi:  Warrior class, but below Samurai.  They are the ones that do most of the fighting.  They have a tradition, if someone is infected, they strap a shaped charge to their heart and kill themselves.  This prevents them from coming back as a Kabane.

Rokkon Shojo:  No idea what it means, but it basically becomes the rallying cry of the main group.  Apparently it’s part of a prayer during a ritualistic cleansing in Japan?

Yojinbo / Yojimbo:  A sell-sword / bodyguard.  Despite the characters acting like it’s a compliment, it is NOT traditional loyal Bushi or Samurai, but independent and untrustworthy.

So, in the setting, a steam-age Japan is being afflicted by a zombie apocalypse.  they have set up massive armoured cities, with transport between them being done by massive, armoured trains.  Most of the story takes place on one of these trains, (which I’m pretty sure is the eponymous Iron Fortress).  There is still a Shogun in charge, and he’s being just as much of a schemey asshole as ever.  Traditional Japanese classism is WELL in effect.

The show focuses on two Kabaneri.  One who is just become one and is learning what it means, and one who is one and KNOWS what it means.

It means they are only tolerated as weapons.
