THE SEASON 4 FINALE OUGHH PSYCHIC DAMAGE

this is the one woman house “accepts” and wilson acknowledges that it might be what breaks their usual cycle: wilson gets wife, eventually resents wife when they aren’t “needy” anymore, divorces wife, crashes at house’s, and cries on his shoulder while house acts dismissive rinse and repeat. wilson now has a partner that works with him (and is a “female proxy” of house but that’s a whole other conversation lol) and house isn’t constantly wrecking havoc on them. as bonnie puts it, he isn’t necessarily what causes the breakups, but he certainly doesn’t help. now it’s different and there is a real chance at their lives changing, maybe even for the better. mutual respect that was never present now is and while house definitely does nip at their ankles, house and amber totally agree on what wilson needs (the whole bed debacle amber and house had the same view on it). wilson could be free from their weird, co-dependant, and possessive relationship, but still have a relationship⁉️

THEN AMBER FUCKING DIES. Their one chance at again, breaking their destructive cycle, is gone. NOT ONLY THAT THOUGH. What gets me is that if amber hated him she wouldn’t have picked him up. The reason amber dies is because they chose to act differently. If amber had been like the others, she would lived because she’d never have picked up house. if she had been like the others though, then well… she’d have left wilson’s life eventually just like the others. house’s “im so sorry” works not only him genuinely expressing sympathy (which was VERY fun to watch btw) but also for everything that led to it. if he hadn’t made his little truce, if he wasn’t drinking alone because of his destructive coping mechanisms, if he hadn’t had amber as a fellow in the first place, literally if he hadn’t been who he was, amber could have lived.

EDIT: Also, amber herself saying “I shouldn’t have gotten on that bus” hurts more too cause it’s like yeah that would have saved her, but as i said earlier not finding house would’ve made her like the other wives. There was literally no way to avoid it. sorry amber but you had to get in that bus 😟.

so now what..? the cycle is definitely altered, as house now has a direct part to play in amber’s death (also just the fact that it’s a death), but it still continues. as upset as wilson will be with house, that really doesn’t change the fact that house is all he has, once again…

The impression I got from his Byleth support was that Claude was angry at Fodlan for not living up to his expectations. He came to Fodlan seeking to learn something he could use to change Almyra's mindset, believing Fodlan would be more accepting of "outsiders" and when he found Fodlan had a negative view of Almyra he got upset and blamed the Church. Part of his story in Wind is him realizing he jumped to conclusions and blamed the Church without getting to know what they really stood for, being confronted with his own prejudice.

Imo, he still doesn't totally get over those conclusions and prejudice especially in the Billy S-support :

He confesses he came to Fodlan wanting to prove Almyra that Fodlan people weren't cowards, but ultimately found out people in Fodlan were as biased and prejudiced as the Almyrans are.

So his plan is to bring a "new set of values" to Fodlan and expand them to the rest of the world - so first start to bring his "new set of values" in Fodlan, and then bring them to Almyra to... destroy prejudice existing in Almyra.

Sure, why not, but bar the inherent "sus-ness" of bringing new "set of values" to a place - never once in those supports Claude reveals that the equivalent of Almyran calling Fodlaneses "cowards" is Fodlanese people calling Almyrans "brutes/barbarians" - sure, when he was a kid younger in Almyra, he used his mom as an example of why everyone in Fodlan wasn't a coward - but obviously we don't have in VW any situation where he'd try to tell Hilda and whoever in the Alliance that Almyrans aren't "savages/brutes/barbarians" to fight against their own prejudiced views...

The only sort of situation I can see this happening is apparently, off-screen, when Judith reveals that Holst and Nader got drunk together and became BFFs.

All Almyrans aren't brutes and barbarians - and yet, when we see some acting like the racist stereotypes the Gonerils depict them as, Claude doesn't pop up to say a thing. The best we can have is, iirc, him saying something like "we can let past grudges influence our decisions now" when Lorenz and Hilda are kind of arguing with the intensity of a wet paper against the inclusion of Almyrans in the army - completely oblivious to the fact (or maybe it was an oversight from the devs?) that Hilda's paralogue could be unlocked/played 3 minutes earlier, so we're not talking about past events and a long history of raids that have stopped, but about very present events : those raids exist.

In a nutshell, I agree with anon about the WTF of Claude's plan and general arc in VW - even if he shows progress and lets go, as much as the game allows anyone to do so - his hatred of the CoS - he's basically asking Fodlan, the victim, to stop being so prejudiced against people raiding for funsies and open their borders to the same people raiding them for funsies, and only after this, he will ask the people raiding for funsies to stop raiding for funsies because the people the raiders call "cowards" don't fucking want to die in what is generally seen as a dick measuring context.

Even post VW, Claude is still prejudiced, not as much as he was in the pre TS and ultimately Nopes lol, against Fodlan, expecting to change and have a new set of values "first" before bringing the values of not excluding people because they are different to Almyra.

And IMO, this is even more bonkers when you realise this S-support happens after Rhea's infodump, aka after the infodump where she reveals that the people opposing the war mongering ones with nukes were genocided - you don't ask the randoms/victims to play nice with their abusers, and expect said abusers to play nice too because you ask them.

Maybe it's a bad faith reading, but the ending illustration has Claude try to mediate or sign a treaty between, on one side, people with spears, and on the other side, people with armors (who look resigned, but maybe it's just the artstyle) and no weapons that are heavily implied to be from Fodlan.

And fun fact, now that i'm looking at them - we see Billy - aka the Church - in AM and SS, but we don't see them in CF and VW... We only see Alliance Lords - but no King/Queen Billy of Fodlan in sight.

to start, nel isn't much of a gift giver or receiver. i touched on this in a recent ask, but there wasn't much of a gift-giving culture in fell!gradlon ( unless you count the gift of death i guess ba dum tss ) and even after escaping, she had — and has always had — an uneasy time assimilating fully into life among human customs.

( which is different from saying she feels like she doesn't get along or doesn't have something of a place among them; she does, but i think this is different from feeling complete belonging as if she were one of them. there is something about nel that has been and will probably always be a few steps removed from humanity. )

anyway i digress.

the point is, she's never gotten used to gifts, either getting or receiving them. she's gracious enough about it, and knows what to say and how to act, but to her it feels unwieldy. like going through a rote set of motions because it's the known response. not that she doesn't appreciate the occasional one but they're still somewhat alien and awkward to her. she's not sure she'll ever get used to it.

as a result, gifts are more a gesture to her than an indication of the object being gifted itself. she will never turn down any gift for this reason, even if she doesn't care for it much or has no use for it, because it's a sign that an individual had her in mind and wished to part with something of their own for her sake. coming from a world that was 97% take and 3% give and only in the rarest circumstances ( or, more often, backhanded and as part of a larger play ), a sincere gesture of giving alone is something worth acknowledging in her eyes.

as for what to get her, engage's favorite gift list is a good indication.

nel likes things she can use. practical gifts that can serve a tangible and immediate purpose. bonus points if it's due to attention paid to something she's been doing lately or some situation she's in, which demonstrates attentiveness. anything weapons or martial related automatically falls within this category as well, since it's attention to her desire to have any means necessary at her disposal to defend what's precious to her.

nel also is at heart a sentimental creature and likes anything that reminds her of the things and people she cares for. the divine dragon scripture gift falls into this category. she herself doesn't pray or read scripture, but it's a reminder of the one it was originally intended to honor. ( conversely if it'd been fell dragon scripture, it probably would've been a disliked gift, ahaha. )

a subcategory of the above is anything that reminds her of life. books about wildlife, a butterfly net, the animal treats, a landscape painting, any flower at all ( you could even gift her a weed; she'd probably raise an eyebrow, but even this wouldn't go unappreciated in its own way ). as mentioned in diamant's support, she's a conscientious and compassionate steward of all natural life because there was none in her world. even a plot of grass is a sign of life and growth, of possibility for a future other than slow and inevitable decay.

thinking about all the forms of magic MC has used, just suddenly as if they are fully trained. also the lack of magical tools used feels weird? Like we got a rune ward for rune carving, and a shadow seeker vacuum, a fragment of aideens light and a bottle of aideens tears but these all do... nothing? We dont use the rune wand to help channel energy, or rune-work outside of that one questline.

idk if it's just me but with some of the more recent late-game quests it feels as though MC has suddenly become adept in magic after training in the Sun circle (& doing minor work in the lightning and moon circle). It feels quite... offputting but that could just be me being weird

#sso #sso critical #(kinda) #idk it just strikes me as odd. the amount of training MC was put through in the sun circle and then there was not as much put into any othe #circle. we did rune running (again with no rune wand) with rhiannon. #idk SSO feels very... patchworked atm and i get that its an 11 year old game so writers and other workers will have joined/left #but there's not much continuity in mind. it feels like no one has kept track of the storyline #or what they want the storyline to be. so as soon as you get past the opening scenes they now have (which for all we know could get retcon #you're in the wild west of lore. one thing mentioned may end up being incorrect later. #'For a long time' Anne was missing and Lisa after a tour with her band. we know Linda is missing for about a week or two [depending on how #long it takes for the player to get to that quest. for SSORidethrough that was on day 9 and if we add in the new opening of all soul riders #being there then thats roughly what you get i reckon.] #but yeah. sso story is inconsistent at best
