The actual meaning of Runes
Tumblr media
When dealing with runes, their name should be analyzed first. The alphabet is called “Futhark” based on the beginning letter of the first six runes’ names.
“Runes” aren’t a singularity. There’s the Elder Futhark and the Younger Futhark, also called Futhork. Than there’s also regional varieties such as the Nordic runes, Frisian runes, Anglo-Saxon runes and varieties due to changes through time. Something that looks like a rune but isn’t is called a “tectiform”.
Etymological there are plenty of Germanic varieties of the word. Rún is Old Norse/Nordic, Old Saxon rūna, Middle Dutch’s rune or ruin and rúna in Gothic. In Finnish runo means “poem”.
The word “rune” in essence means “secret” but is also a word used for “confidential conversation/writing”, “concealment” but also “counseling”.
The meaning of the word was held literally. It was not meant for basic administration, conversation or education. Few people actually knew how to read or write runes. It was reserved for a select but also elite part of society.
This brings us to Odin. The tales tell how he hung himself from the branches of Yggdrasil for nine days to gain the knowledge of runic wisdom. This makes him the god of the hanged (Hangagud), god of runes (Rúnatyr), father of magical songs (Fadir Galdrs) and wise one (Svidur). Knowing runes was viewed as knowing (some of) Odin’s magic and/or power.
Runes were used for “runic magic” a not very specified kind of magic in the Eddic texts. Individual runes were given names, such as the first rune, Fehu which means cattle or wealth. Naming individual characters is a common historic practice. These are not to be taken literally, but often are in modern esotericism and fantasy. Germanic Runic spells however are a weird thing. There are mystical inscriptions on the back of brooches, stones, wooden artifacts, etc. We know what they say, but not what they mean.
Mostly runes aren’t actually that far fetched. They are found on grave/memorial stones or a craftsman’s signature on an object. An example of this is the Nolby stone; “Bergsven and Sigfust and Fride raised this stone in memory of Bure, their father. Fartägn carved this stone”.

Translating the Runes in Secrets of the Magic Makers
Ok, so I already said in my previous post (X) that I love Secrets of the Magic Makers and the runic writing in Frozen in general, but now I’m going to actually talk about the translations of the runes.
Most* of the runes shown in Frozen movies and shorts are historically accurate and translatable. They are Younger Futhark runes, used in Nordic regions beginning around the 9th century. The Younger Futhark alphabet has 16 runes and is a simplification of the Elder Futhark, which had 24 originally. The Younger Futhark alphabet was used throughout Scandinavia in the Viking Age and declined after Catholicism was introduced. (Source: Runes Illustrated by Rachel Newcombe)
* I say most because the runes in Olaf’s Frozen Adventure on the bell are not historically accurate. They are simply a direct English transliteration of the words “Ring in the Season”
Disney worked with Old Norse language expert Jackson Crawford (you can find his YT channel here (X)) to ensure that the runes in F1 are historically accurate.
Ok, history lesson over, let’s actually talk about how these runes are relevant to the Frozen story.
I did not translate these myself, although I have kind of taught myself how to now. These translations come from Panya on this website. If you are interested in the detailed translations, I would highly recommend checking it out, as it is truly fascinating!
Tumblr media
Here is the cover of the book. It translates roughly to Runes of Knowledge, but I believe this book to also be Secrets of the Magic Makers (see my previous post for full explanation).
Tumblr media
The inside of the book is 9 lines of text, repeated twice. It appears to say something like
Someone (subject is unclear) was turned to stone (ice?) by the power of the moon. The trolls from the dark mountain realm have healing hands. A soul wounded from cold will heal if brought very quickly to the field of them (the trolls). Trolls have such a nature that they can get sorcery out of the body to save it. Such action done in true love is the only one which can thaw a heart stoned (frozen?) very quickly.
It isn't exactly clear or easy to read, but I think that it tells the story of an ancient Arendellian (possibly Aren, but that’s mostly just a headcanon) whose heart was frozen by some power of the moon. It goes on to say that trolls have the power to remove magic, but that the only way to thaw a frozen heart is an act of true love.
This is VERY interesting as it implies that someone in the ancient past had a frozen heart. It could just be an old story, something that never actually happened. I personally don’t believe there was ever a single person who was the fifth spirit before Elsa and by extension no human who ever wielded ice powers like hers before. Another option is perhaps whoever it was that angered the spirits in some way or ventured too far into Ahtohallan and began to freeze? Or it could be a figurative frozen heart in the sense of a lack of love and compassion. I suppose only Ahtohallan knows this answer.
The other thing that makes this interesting is that it directly says that an act of true love will thaw a frozen heart. Which means that the answer was right there all along. The entire message of love will thaw was summed up here in runes at the very beginning of the movie. This also means that this was part of an Arendellian myth or story at some point and has been forgotten by the time Elsa is born.
So yeah, not really a big revelation or anything, but it is certainly interesting. I would love to know more details about this story and its origin, but again, only Ahtohallan knows. Overall I do think it's fascinating, as it gives us more information about Ancient Arendellian beliefs and traditions that still hold relevance in the time Frozen is actually set. As someone who is OBSESSED with the ancient myths and stories of Arendelle and the surrounding areas, this is so so intriguing to me and I absolutely love it!

How do you spell Thor in young futhark?
ᚦᚢᚱ
In case your browser doesn't display Unicode runes, that's þurs, úr, reið.
Here it is, from the Velanda stone (I've edited it from the image on Wikipedia to make it easier to read) in the phrase Þórr vígi 'may Thor hallow/consecrate":
Tumblr media
Later on, when the younger futhark started changing, it could also be ᚦᚯᚱ or ᚦᚮᚱ (þurs, ós, reið). That's how it's written on the Kvinneby amulet:

Sorry but I just need to hop on and rant about how TVD handled the historical aspects of the Mikaelsons in the show because yeah it’s a CW show so the bar’s in Hell, but I’m also really fucking annoyed and opinionated about all of this. First off, we have this Old Norse family living in an Old Norse society (probably 800-900s Norway) and we know that widespread Christian conversion didn’t really happen there until at least the late 900s, but moreso the early 1000s AD, but somehow half this family has biblical names. Not only are Esther, Elijah, and Rebecca biblical names that definitely aren’t Old Norse, but a name like Elijah doesn’t even work with the sound profile or either alphabet of the language. As for the others, I’m not that mad about Finn or Kol because, if you just tack an r on the end, those are ON names and the loss of that extra r over time can be explained, but Mikael and Niklaus are newer names that just didn’t exist at the time. If they wanted Mikael’s character to have a relatively modern sounding name so the patronymic would blend in more as a last name in other places, they could’ve just called him Erik and let the kids all be Erikson because at least that’s an actual Old Norse name. Klaus pisses me off the most because ‘Klaus’ by itself is an ON name but Niklaus isn’t so all they had to do was not have those two extra letters and it would’ve been fine.
The other main thing that bothers me is everything about when they get to America and are just casually living with the natives, all speaking English like it’s no big deal. If you don’t want to create a whole pidgin to show linguistic evolution over time in a fucking CW show, that’s fine, but all you had to do was show Esther coming up with a spell that allows them to understand each other and communicate. It would’ve taken 3 seconds to show us a babel fish spell and then it wouldn’t all be bullshit pissing me off. Also, they don’t spend enough time on the early days like that, in my opinion, because I would’ve loved to see the culture clash of Old Norse and the New World werewolves.
The last main thing is the runes. Now, the names carved into stone in the cave are written differently from the ones on the paper for Esther’s linking spell and the ones in stone are a tiny bit more correct. That being said, they’re still woefully wrong because these Old Norse vampires are using Anglo Saxon runes instead of Younger Futhark. If you try to read the runes in Younger Futhark, the only characters that match at all are ᚱ, ᛒ, ᛁ, ᛚ, ᚾ, ᛋ, ᚢ and then the ᛦ is a ‘z’ in YF but a ‘k’ in AS and is used as a ‘k’ in these runes, so, for example, ‘Rebekah’ reads like ‘R_b_z__’ and ‘Niklaus’ reads like ‘Nizl_us’. Elder Futhark doesn’t really work either, plus the timing of its use would be beyond questionable, since the very latest it may have been used is 800. The ᛦ and ᛋ characters don’t exist but we do get the ᛖ and ᛗ, so now ‘Rebekah’ reads like ‘Rebez__’ and ‘Mikael’ reads as either ‘Mi__el’ in stone or ‘Miu_el’ on the paper (a mistake was made so ᚢ was used instead of ᛦ for the ‘k’ in his name, even though that’s also wrong and it should’ve been ᚴ.)
If you realize the horrible decision they made to have their Old Norse characters write in Anglo-Saxon runes and read the names in that alphabet, that’s where there’s mistakes in the paper version and inconsistency between those runes and the ones carved in stone. For example, it’s ‘ᚱᛖᛒᛖᛦᚪᚻ’ in the cave but ‘ᚱᛖᛒᛖᛦᚩᚻ’ on the paper, which probably seems like a small difference but the first would be pronounced like ‘Rebekah’ whereas the second would be ‘Rebekoh’. It’s ‘ᛗᛁᛦᚪᛖᛚ’ in the cave but ‘ᛗᛁᚢᚩᛖᛚ’ on paper, so ‘Mikael’ becomes ‘Miuoel’. ‘ᚾᛁᛦᛚᚪᚢᛋ’ on stone later is written as ‘ᚾᛁᛦᛁᚩᚢᛋ’ — ‘Niklaus’ vs. ‘Nikious’. So not only do they use the wrong names and the wrong runes but then they fuck up the runes they’re using, and it feels like they just didn’t even bother trying to write Elijah’s name like that because there is no j and they couldn’t be bothered to try and figure out how to write that name in any of these writing systems. Fucking hell.

Protection:
So I know I mentioned in my ask that protection is one of the most important things you can learn, so I am going to elaborate more on that here. There are many ways to protect yourself from negative energy, just find what works best for you.
1. Natural Remedies
There are plenty of ways to protect yourself using the fruits of the earth. If you’ve ever watched Supernatural, you will know that salt is the most common form of protection against all negative energy. Table salt, sea salt, black salt (grind salt and ashes together to make), pink Himalayan salt, and pink Celtic salt are some different protective salts. However, other plants and herbs can also be used for protection. A good book that covers some of this is called Green Witchcraft by Paige Vanderbeck. It’s a practical guide for beginners on using natural forms of protection, and I highly recommend it if you can get it. Please do your research when using certain plants as they can either be toxic to you or animals (lavender is poisonous to dogs and cats, but is good for cleansing and protection).
2. Crystals, Charms and Amulets
These all broadly overlap so I’m combining them into one category. These are the most common and you can find almost every modern practitioner has one of these. Everything in the known world is made of matter and has an energy to it. Simply wearing or being near certain crystals or rocks can greatly effect your mood, so it’s important to read up on what the spiritual energy associated with each one is. Common protective crystals are selenite, black tourmaline, black onyx and obsidian. Clear quartz can also be used for protection and is good for just about everything. I personally wear a black tourmaline necklace to protect my energy. Some place selenite wands above their doors to ward from negative energy entering their space.. Charms and amulets are jewelry you can wear or carry that either depict a protective sigil, are made with a crystal or stone or a combination of the two. THESE ARE NOT NECESSARY TO PRACTICE WITHCRAFT!
3. Protective Sigils
A protective sigil is essentially an abstract picture you can draw or carve with the intention to protect something. Making your own protective sigil is easy, and this is one of the easier ones to hid if you are in a place where you can’t be open about your practice. To make your own protective sigil, you can use a sigil wheel or write out the word, remove vowels and repeating letters, and then combine the remaining letters into a monogram. It does not have to perfect or aesthetically pleasing, whatever you make yourself will automatically be more powerful because YOU made it. To use a sigil wheel, simply draw a line connecting each letter of the word or phrase and combine to make one shape.
Tumblr media
4. Bind Runes
Similar to sigils, bind runes are made by using either the Elder or Younger Futhark (runic writing system). The Younger Futhark is the most commonly used runic system. Each rune has a specific meaning and combining two or more runes creates a bind rune. Fun fact: the Bluetooth logo is actually a bind rune that combines the runes of hagall (or hagalaz) and berkanan (or bjarkan). This is what I personally use and use of runes is not a closed practice. Please note that some runes are associated with a specific god or goddess, so do your research when using these because they can be POTENT. Whenever I draw my bind rune on my doors and windowsills, I mix black salt and water then use a paintbrush to draw the sigil.

Unlocking the Ancient Wisdom: Exploring the Mystical World of Runes
Shaina Tranquilino
August 30, 2023
Tumblr media
If you take the time to observe and look around, we are surrounded by ancient symbols and mystical practices. Runes stand out as one of the most fascinating forms of divination and communication. Originating from ancient Germanic and Norse cultures, these enigmatic characters have captivated scholars, historians, and enthusiasts alike for centuries. In this blog post, we will embark on a journey to uncover the secrets behind runes and explore their significance in contemporary society.
What are Runes?
Runes are a system of ancient alphabets used by various Germanic tribes such as the Vikings during the early Middle Ages. These characters were typically inscribed onto stones, wood, or metal objects and carried deep symbolic meanings. Each rune represents a specific sound, but they also hold broader associations with natural elements, gods/goddesses, and various aspects of life.
The Origins of Runes:
The exact origins of runes remain shrouded in mystery. However, many scholars believe that they evolved from older writing systems like Etruscan or Anglo-Saxon scripts. The earliest known runic inscriptions date back to around 150 AD and can be found across Northern Europe.
The Rune Alphabet:
The runic alphabet is known as "Futhark," derived from its first six letters: Fehu (wealth), Uruz (strength), Thurisaz (thorn), Ansuz (divine breath), Raido (journey), and Kaunan (torch). Over time, different versions emerged within different regions, resulting in variations such as Elder Futhark, Younger Futhark, and Anglo-Saxon Futhorc.
Divination with Runes:
One of the primary purposes of runes was divination – seeking insight into future events or guidance in decision-making processes. To perform a rune reading or casting, practitioners would traditionally draw runes from a bag or scatter them on a cloth, interpreting their meanings based on their positions and interactions.
Each rune carries its own unique symbolism, allowing for nuanced interpretations. Some common interpretations include Fehu representing wealth and abundance, Thurisaz symbolizing protection or defense, and Raido signifying journeys or travel.
Runes in Contemporary Society:
Despite being rooted in ancient cultures, runes have not lost their relevance in modern times. Many individuals find solace in exploring the wisdom embedded within these symbols and seek to incorporate them into their spiritual practices. Runes are often utilized for meditation, personal growth, intention-setting rituals, and even as decorative elements in jewelry or artwork.
In popular culture, runes have made appearances in various forms of media such as books, movies (e.g., "The Lord of the Rings"), and video games (e.g., "The Elder Scrolls" series). These depictions have further fueled curiosity about runes among enthusiasts worldwide.
Runes continue to captivate our collective imagination as powerful symbols of ancient wisdom and divination. Whether you approach them from an academic perspective or seek personal connection through spirituality, exploring the world of runes can be a transformative experience. As we unravel the secrets behind these enigmatic characters, let us honour the knowledge they carry by embracing their lessons with reverence and respect.

The Rune Guide: An Introduction to the Use of the Runes
Runes are an ancient shape of oracle that is utilised with the aid of those on the lookout for steerage. Runes have a long history, dating back to ancient use via the Germanic and Nordic tribes, and they’ll be extensively used today. Anyone can get a rune reading, but it’s far more amusing to learn how to use them for yourself. Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting started with runes.
What are runes?
The word “rune” in truth procedures, “mystery, whisper, or secret,’ refers to the shape of divination or oracle reading system used to advantage in situations or questions. Runes can be made from a whole lot of materials, but the most uncommon ones are products of stone and go through a photo of the runic alphabet.
There are several varieties of the runic alphabet used on runes, the oldest of these is the vintage Germanic runic alphabet mentioned as ‘Elder Futhark.’ The Elder Futhark is manufactured from 24 runes, the number one through six of which spell out the word “futhark.”
The Younger, or Scandinavian, Futhark, is a few different models that are believed to have been applied in Scandinavia until the 17th century. All of these variations highlight adjustments that happened as humans moved and emigrated to numerous countries. Each rune photo, in addition to being a letter of the alphabet, has symbolic meanings. Although many of these have traditional meanings that could have meant a lot to people who used the runic alphabet, the meaning behind the symbols stays relevant today.
For example, inside the Elder Futhark-
Fehu, F, method of domestic cattle or wealth.
Uruz, U., procedures a wild ox.
Thurisaz, T., procedures a thorn or a giant.
Hagalaz, H., and procedures hail.
Ansuz, A, procedures an ancestral god.
Raidho, R, method of wagon or chariot.
‘Kenaz’ procedures a beacon or torch.
The Origin of RunesThe runes is derived from an ancient form of the Germanic alphabet that has become used for writing, divination, and magical purposes by the Germanic and Nordic tribes of northern Europe, Scandinavia, and Britain. Runic inscriptions have been positioned on stones, jewellery, weapons, and objects dating decrease again to the 1/3 century AD, but they’ll be probable to have existed a lousy a lot earlier.
What Can Runes Be Used For?
The runes can be used to help guide you through problems or issues, or to assume what will happen. They aren’t fortune-telling and no longer provide precise answers or advice; rather, they supply numerous variables and advocate how you should react if the event occurs. Runes are mentioned for hinting at answers while leaving you to decide the statistics. This is wherein intuition is to be had in handy.
Unicorn readers realize that the future isn’t usually predetermined and that humans have the capacity to chart their own non-public path and make their own non-public decisions. So, if you no longer much like the steerage supplied via a rune reading, you were given the cap capacity to extrude your path or path, and take a unique route.
Runes can be used in a whole lot of situations. For example, one situation in which consulting the runes can be beneficial is when you have constrained statistics or can only see a partial picture.
How Do Runes Work?
It’s now not fortune-telling while you use the runes. The idea behind how runes artwork is that while you ask a question or don’t forget any issue, your conscious and unconscious minds are focused. When the runes are cast in front of you, they’ll now not be without a doubt random, but rather options are made via your unconscious.
What Can I Ask the Runes About?
Some rune clients believe that questions need to be asked about twice as often as others believe that questions are acceptable. Whatever approach you pick out, keep your question or issue in mind as you forge your runes. Remember that rune reading isn’t usually about foretelling the future or presenting definitive answers. It’s about looking for cap capacity motives and consequences and imagining feasible outcomes.
What Sort of Runes Do I Need?
Runes can be made from a whole lot of materials, such as wood, stone, pebbles, crystals, bone, or perhaps metal. When you first start out and want to appear in case you need rune casting, a smooth set will suffice.
However, as quickly as you’ve got practised for a while and superior an interest in runes, it’s far awesome in case you need to pick out and purchase a completely unique setting. If you’re drawn to a specific crystal, together with rose quartz or amethyst, making funding in a crystal set of runes might be a top-notch idea. You additionally should buy a tough and speedy carved into smooth pebbles or small quantities of stone.

oh i must state that merri is illiterate in every verse except her historical english verses, in which she can read elder futhark runes used for divining and nothing else. this is distinct from younger futhark ( norse/nordic ) and futhorc ( anglo-frisian expansion ), and she can only understand rune stones and would not really grasp manuscripts written in elder futhark. as far as er canon goes, the people of the badlands had no need for written language when oral history sufficed and there was no trade happening.

Even though Embla was the first child born in the new world she remained firmly nordic in believes and that's what her early experience with magic was also based on. Although most families of that age used Younger Futhark to write and practise magic with, Embla's maternal lineage of witches stretches even further back than the 200 years that the newer version of runes have been used so she and her entire family use Elder Futhark to write. Her first encounter with norse magic is through reading the runes before a hunt, she's only 3 at the time yet everything happens just as she said. Embla keeps up her tradition of reading the runes every day of her immortal life, as a reminder of her roots.
She has several sets of rune stones that she uses over the years but the ones she loves the most are the ones made herself of the bones from the first prey she caught as a girl. She spent hours cleansing the antlers and carving each rune took it's own time since she had to remain focused on the particular rune she was carving and if her mind wavered from the intention of the rune she'd have to start over. The remaining antler pieces she made into hairpieces for herself and Rebekah and once she was well versed enough in the runes she wove an intricate design of protective runes into them, making it look like vines for her sister and waves for herself and once Freya shows up she makes one with a pattern of flames for her. Every item of clothing or object she gives away to those closest to her has protective runes hidden on them. When she was still human she even got a tattoo made with wood ash of a protective rune that is placed behind her ear but that healed when she transformed so she has too redo it several times a month for it to show up.

Archaeology: Satellite Data Points To Possible Burial Site of ‘Bluetooth Viking King’
— June 28, 2022 | Heritage Daily
Tumblr media
Curmsun Disc - Image Credit : Tomasz Sielski - CC BY-SA 3.0
Archaeologists have identified the possible burial site of Harald “Bluetooth” Gormsson, using satellite data from the Polish village of Wiejkowo.
Harald “Bluetooth” Gormsson was king of Denmark from AD 958 to 986, consolidating his rule with most of Jutland and Zealend. Harald is credited with uniting the Scandinavian countries by introducing Christianity, and gained the nickname Blåtand (meaning blue tooth) because of a dead tooth that chroniclers described as dark blue.
During his reign, Harald oversaw the reconstruction of numerous public works, including the refortifying of the fortress of Aros, construction of several ring forts, and the commissioning of the Ravning Bridge that crossed the meadows of Ravning Enge at Vejle River.
The biography of Harald Bluetooth is summed up by a runic inscription on the Jelling stones which records:
“King Harald bade these memorials to be made after Gorm, his father, and Thyra, his mother. The Harald who won the whole of Denmark and Norway and turned the Danes to Christianity.”
In more recent years, the Bluetooth wireless technology used to connect devices was named after Harald, based on an analogy that the technology would unite devices the way Harald united the tribes of Denmark into a single kingdom. The Bluetooth logo consists of a Younger Futhark bind rune for his initials, H (ᚼ) and B (ᛒ).
A research team led by Marek Kryda applied space-based reconnaissance over the landscape around Wiejkowo to search for archaeological disturbances, some of which can register as small as 30 cm in length. The study revealed a large Viking Age burial mound beneath the Roman Catholic Church of Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Wiejkowo, which was later confirmed using ground-penetrating radar.
The rediscovery of a gold disc back in 2014, known as the Curmsun disc, had previously led to speculation that Harald was buried in the vicinity. The disc has a Latin inscription that described the “ruler of Danes, Scania and the Viking fortress of Jomsborg”, of which is the present-day town of Wolin just 3.5 miles west of the Wiejkowo.
The researchers believe that the disc was originally buried alongside skeletal remains, which was discovered as part of a Viking Age hoard in 1841 beneath the church where the burial mound has now been identified.
Reports at the time described a silver coin from Otto I’s reign, a bracelet in bronze with a dash decoration covering the surface, a fragment of another bronze bracelet, a small, stamped piece of gold and the Curmsun Disc.
After its original discovery, the hoard was left in the crypt until 1945, when a Polish army major, Stefan Sielski, and his brother Michal entered and seized what was left. The disc would only be rediscovered in 2014, when Sielski‘s 11-year-old great-granddaughter found the artefact in a hidden chest stored with old buttons.

Floral (sold), Rainbow, Pixie, & Oceanic Norse Casting Runes | Elder Futhark, Younger Futhark, Anglo-Saxon
"Rune casting is an oracular divination method in which runes are laid out, or cast, either in a specific pattern or randomly, as a form of guidance through problems or situations in which you need help making a decision. Runes won't give exact answers and they don't offer advice. But what they can do is suggest different variables and possible outcomes based on the issue as it presently sits. In other words, runes will give you hints that will force you to use some critical thinking skills and basic intuition. As with other forms of divination, such as Tarot, nothing is fixed or finalized. If you don't like what the rune casting is telling you, change what you're doing, and alter your prospective path." - LearnReligions.com
