Oh GOD you, too, are an online lectures geek pls consider this your invitation to talk about favs--ones that stuck with you, current obsessions--the more the better! In trade, I'll tell you the two things I'm currently adoring: Yale's Open Course podcast on The Civil War to Reconstruction done by David Blight (man forgot more than ten other civil war historians know even if he mumbles *constantly*) and A History of Christianity by Diarmaid MacCulloch (so! worth the Prime BBC free trial <3)
Hiya! Don't mind if I do!
So 99% of the lectures I've watched lately are on the Great Courses Plus which was recently and stupidly renamed "Wondrium", which I find profoundly stupid because instead of just saying, "Hey, check out the Great Courses, yeah you can kinda guess what the streaming service offers," I have to instead explain what this nonsense term "Wondrium" means, ANYWAY, they've got lectures about basically everything.
Essentially, it's Netflix but for college lectures. YouTube has become so unreliable as far as what's actual information and what's completely made up or even racist conspiracy theory BS that I find it completely untrustworthy. Also, most documentaries are trying to prove something new, or offer a new angle on something, OR they're SO rudimentary and 101 that even for topics I know less about in history I tend to already know everything they're going to say.
So I pivoted to college lectures because 1) it's a whole series so like, dozens of hours I can just throw on in the background while doing something mindless and 2) I know it's going to be trustworthy, reliable, and provide me a baseline on a topic instead of some "new controversial spin" on it. Like, goddammit, sometimes I just want to better understand the history of Ancient Egypt, not your stupid theory about how they were secretly all space aliens or that we've got the carbon dating all wrong or whatever made up nonsense.
So, here's a list of some of my favorites!
Hannibal: The Military Genius Who Almost Conquered Rome - I consider myself about as near an expert as a non-academic can get on Rome and this lecture actually taught me some things, which is rare, so I recommend it as a fantastic deep dive!
How the Crusades Changed History is a pretty good short version that I recommend to anyone who enjoyed The Old Guard's Nicky and Joe BUT, for the best Crusades lecture, I'd recommend this History of the Crusades podcast. Sharyn Eastaugh is not just insanely informative, but her dry wit made me laugh out loud at least once an episode at the sheer hapless ineptitude of the Crusaders.
In the Wake of the Plague is a fantastic new lecture by Wondrium, the lecturer is amazing and it provides a lot of objective insights into how humans react to plagues that is VERY relevant to current events, BUT their lecture on **The Black Death in general is the one that got me obsessed with their lecture series. I watched it in the first week of Covid lockdown and let me tell you, having this super in-depth, objective look into how people behaved during the Black Death was incredibly valuable (and chilling) going into those years because it all played out with astonishing similarity. Also, anything by that lecturer, Dorsey Armstrong, is awesome. She's a Medievalist of the highest order. I also recommend her lecture on King Arthur.
**The Birth of the Modern Mind: The Intellectual History of the 17th and 18th Centuries - this one wins the award for "Lecture I thought most likely to bore me to tears that ended up being the single most fascinating I've heard in YEARS." Seriously, the way it explores the evolution of how we think in the modern era, through the philosophers who first conceived of these ideas, was jaw-droppingly fascinating. I also recommend it to writers of historical fiction and fantasy for a crash course, by proxy, of how to write people who think differently than you.
The Other Side of History: Daily Life in the Ancient World - I once had beef with a post here on Tumblr that claimed that academic Classicists don't care about slaves or normal people during the Roman Empire, which is just profoundly absurd. I pointed out this lecture to them if they actually wanted to learn more about the subject instead of complaining that an art history professor may not have been prepped for a lecture about the lives of enslaved people in Ancient Rome. If that is a subject of interest, this lecture is great.
The Real History of Pirates - a must-listen for OFMD fans who want to get an introduction to historical pirates and the history of pirates in literature, which "Our Flag Means Death" owes as much if not more to than the historical figures.
**Turning Points in Middle Eastern History - One of the first lectures I listened to and still one of my enduring favorites. It's the first one I picked up for writing my Old Guard fic, Lights Out, when I wanted to write Joe from a more informed angle and I learned so much.
Understanding Japan: A Cultural History - One of my favorite lectures based on format, the lecturer picks a literary work or cultural concept as the entry point to explore the timeline of Japanese history. It's a fantastic way to give a wider and more holistic look at each era, pairing it with a cultural touchstone.
Shout-out to "The Mysterious Etruscans" because I just think they're neat. The lecturer is also very good and I highly recommend his lecture on ancient cities as well which taught me a lot that I didn't know.
Also a shout out to, "Warriors, Queens, and Intellectuals: 36 Great Women before 1400" for its subject and the lecturer who is great and she also has a really fascinating talk about the history of Spain.
Ok, I THINK that's some of the top ones! ;D

What is Generation Loss: Unperson?
Tumblr media
Unperson is a Generation Loss AU written, illustrated, and narrated by yours truly!
The story begins as canon-adjacent to Generation 1 (the first chapter, Savior's Stigmata, is technically a prologue, in that it takes place during the events of episode three of The Social Experiments). In chapters 2 and onwards, the cast of TSE begin an adventure anew.
Showfall Media has revolutionized the field of interactive entertainment. In Hetch's Social Experiments, this entertainment took the form of three consecutive livestreams, which the audience could actively participate in and, ultimately, decide the fate of the Hero [i.e. Generation 1 of Generation Loss]. Now, Showfall Media is proud to bring you entertainment through an even more immersive medium: video games.
Anathema Annihilation is Showfall's most innovative use of "Phantoptics" technology to date: a video game where one's choices really matter and actively impact the world we live in.
Charlie awakens in a new environment and with a new purpose as the face of the beta tester's Hero avatar. Elsewhere, Ranboo has been revived, reprogrammed, and repurposed with a new face of his own: a biomechanical, bestial antagonist known as "The Devourer".
Tumblr media
The player character - the Hero (who we know to be Charlie) - joins forces with a helpful non-player Companion (Sneeg) to eliminate a wide range of enemies - known as "Anathemas" - across multiple levels, each culminating with a fight against a powerful boss: an "Abomination".
Tumblr media
Depending on the player's Variant choice, the theme (and therefore appearance and ability mechanics) of the Anathemas, as well as the Hero and Companion classses, changes.
Tumblr media
Regardless of the player's Variant choice, however, the Abominations always remain the same: previous cast members who have been previously rejected by an audience and have been revived and repurposed as biomechanical monstrosities.
Tumblr media
As the Hero and Companion progress through the levels of Anathema Annihilation, their minds become increasingly plagued by questions concerning their memories, free will, and grasp of reality. But they are not the only ones cursed with introspection; the Devouerer, too, clings desperately on to whatever shreds of humanity it still possesses, and seeks, above all else, to avenge its friends.
...
Now that you have a brief synopsis of the world and premise of Unperson, if you are so inclined, you can read the available chapters here or check out the in-universe website I created for it!
On the website, you can find additional lore, concept art, links to all currently available chapters (as well as audiobook adaptations of all of them, narrated by the author), themed playlists, and a fanworks feature page (showcasing some of the fanart and cosplay that you guys have made for this story)!
I am always open to Tumblr asks if you have any further questions!
Please note that Unperson is currently on a bit of a hiatus, however, as I am in graduate school and must focus on my academics before working on this AU. It will be completed - I promise you that! I have plans for the rest of the story, as well as more art and such on the way. Patience is key ;)
Here are the currently available chapters:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's all for now, folks! Remember to check out the official website as well as my Unperson Youtube Playlist, which contains speedpaints for all of the chapter art as well as the audiobook adaptation!
Lastly, if you'd like to keep up to date on this project or share your feedback, follow or post on the #UnpersonGL tag!

Todays rip: 07/11/2023
Rearranging Furniture in the Underground Secret Base
Season 7 Featured on: The Year of Grand Dad Sound Selection [Side A]
Ripped by Kirbio
youtube
Tentative rip name: Battling, Catching, Rearranging Pokéballs
Dancing, walking, rearranging furniture...~
It all began earlier this year. There was something so fascinating about realizing that, those weirdly prevelant Family Guy moment YouTube Shorts, weren't just affecting me...they were showing up for a TON of YouTube Shorts-scrollers the world over. The plague of algorithmic content zeroed in on what would retain a general audience for the longest average time, and it just...happened to be mediocre Family Guy jokes? But this one joke, this spoof of Virtual Insanity by Jamiroquai, kind of just...united us Shorts-watchers like nothing else had? The joke was pretty funny in of itself, but the instrumental arrangement in the bit was surprisingly well done for being "just a cutaway gag", and I think it just reminded a whole generation of people all at once just how good of a song Virtual Insanity is. And like a lot of other frequently-featured bands featured on SiIva, it drew my attention toward Jamiroquai as well.
Now, I've covered SiIva's prior love shown toward Route 228 earlier on this blog, with The 2:28 Collab and its sequel - due pretty much solely to these rips, its become a tune dear to a lot of SiIva viewers: a bonafide jazz classic, if you will! The second this was uploaded I was there at the ready, and what Rearranging Furniture in the Underground Secret Base gave me in turn felt like absolute euphoria. Pure SiIvaGunner nostalgia from The 2:28 Collab, blended perfectly with the internet's current obsession with Jamiroquai, in a way that felt...almost destined to happen. As some wise commenters have pointed out, two original songs have a lot in common in terms of sound and composition - Rearranging Furniture in the Underground Secret Base, in turn, feels like finally getting that perfect payoff to a setup made long ago. It's an arrangement that pulls off everything it sets up with flying colors, and results in a great love letter to the past of SiIvaGunner, the legacy of Virtual Insanity, and its resurgence in popularity with a new generation. All thanks to the mishap and mayhem of modern internet algorithms. If that's not virtual insanity, I don't know what is.

SpaceTime -- A brief history
SpaceTime is Australia’s most popular and respected astronomy and space science news program – averaging over two million downloads every year. We’re also number five in the United States.  The show reports on the latest stories and discoveries making news in astronomy, space flight, and science.  SpaceTime features weekly interviews with leading Australian scientists about their research.  The show began life in 1995 as ‘StarStuff’ on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s (ABC) NewsRadio network.  Award winning investigative reporter Stuart Gary created the program during more than fifteen years as NewsRadio’s evening anchor and Science Editor.  Gary’s always loved science. He studied astronomy at university and was invited to undertake a PHD in astrophysics, but instead focused on his career in journalism and radio broadcasting. He worked as an announcer and music DJ in commercial radio, before becoming a journalist and eventually joining ABC News and Current Affairs. Later, Gary became part of the team that set up ABC NewsRadio and was one of its first presenters. When asked to put his science background to use, Gary developed StarStuff which he wrote, produced and hosted, consistently achieving 9 per cent of the national Australian radio audience based on the ABC’s Nielsen ratings survey figures for the five major Australian metro markets: Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth.  The StarStuff podcast was published on line by ABC Science -- achieving over 1.3 million downloads annually.  However, after some 20 years, the show finally wrapped up in December 2015 following ABC funding cuts, and a redirection of available finances to increase sports and horse racing coverage.  Rather than continue with the ABC, Gary resigned so that he could keep the show going independently.  StarStuff was rebranded as “SpaceTime”, with the first episode being broadcast in February 2016.  Over the years, SpaceTime has grown, more than doubling its former ABC audience numbers and expanding to include new segments such as the Science Report -- which provides a wrap of general science news, weekly skeptical science features, special reports looking at the latest computer and technology news, and Skywatch – which provides a monthly guide to the night skies. The show is published three times weekly (every Monday, Wednesday and Friday) and available from the United States National Science Foundation on Science Zone Radio, and through both i-heart Radio and Tune-In Radio.

I’m Ranting Again.
The husband, so help me, insists on watching gaming videos on YouTube while I’m in the room.
I avoid any and all opinion pieces about games like the plague because taste is entirely subjective, but these guys (mostly) like to talk like they are the arbiters of objective truth about games.
But - my spouse causes me to overhear them against my will.
Today over on WhatCulture gaming, the theme was ‘upcoming games that will redeem their franchises’ (or something like that) in which the presenter tells us that Mirage will redeem the Assassins Creed franchise because since Black Flag, the games have become increasingly unpopular, and the fans don’t like the open world, non-narrative games of the previous trilogy.
I was so enraged by this. Because like - Which fans do you mean, internet man?
What a surprise: you mean the old school AC fans.
What a surprise: you’re happy to ignore the millions of people who played the new games to pander to a group of gamers who have been moaning and whining about the games as if none of us exist.
These are the so-called fans who are loud and obnoxious and frankly toxic towards anyone who disagrees with them.
Who are full of hate and disrespect towards the fans of Odyssey especially, and they’re not much better about Valhalla.
Who - and I have seen this with my own eyes - openly attack people who share content on the open world games because they’re not the games they personally prefer.
I’m really sorry, but anyone who says with a straight face that the AC games have failed since Black Flag is a moron. It’s not only wrong, it’s blatantly shitting on the massive amount of newcomers to the franchise and the fans of the open world games in particular, and the open world genre in general.
I really, truly hate this shit.

Okay I got a few questions I wanna ask! Because uh I seemed to miss this whole shibang for a while lol 😅 Where can I find either an overview of the story that HAS been told, or where I can read more about TF:Mercy? How many characters are there? Because I love the characters I've seen so far! What's the rules on fanart? Sorry for the questions but uh yeah! TF:Mercy looks really cool!
Thank you for your interest!
Reading the following information will give you a great idea of what TF Mercy contains so far: Mercy is a choose your own adventure story game that begins with you making the decision as Predaking whether you will spare Starscream or not at the end of Predacons Rising. You decide how evil Predaking is, then you also decide where you would like to live.
This is available to play in demo video form on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYTLyDZzGpY One by one, I am fully writing the paths of the choose your own adventure story. Two are fully written and playable in text form, a third is nearly done. Summaries for each plot below the link:
Space Adventure: https://archiveofourown.org/works/34116382/chapters/84877684
You are Predaking. The War is over, and now you work with your Predacon brethren at a spaceport welcoming refugees back to Cybertron. Soon, you join Bumblebee's mission to travel to other planets to bring back Autobots, Decepticons, and colonists in need. An arrogant Predacon begins to learn that the War is much deeper than he ever imagined and there are forces stronger than him in the universe. Your adventure takes a dark turn when you meet the Decepticon general Overlord, a former gladiator who presents as calm and charming, but is actually the most dangerous Cybertronian in existence. Now, he has you trapped on his planet with his other prisoners, and you must discover his weakness and escape with your lives! But is escaping enough? What will it take to defeat a Decepticon who cannot be damaged?
Reformed Predator: https://archiveofourown.org/works/37436491/chapters/93426493
Predaking killed and devoured Starscream, but after committing such a disturbing act of violence, his psyche is damaged. He believes Starscream deserved to die, yet nightmares of Starscream plague him and a vengeful voice fills his mind. Going mad with hatred and hunger, Predaking succumbs to his predatory urges and begins to eat other Cybertronians in secret. But his actions have consequences: Predaking's brethren grow distant from him, the police are suspicious, and an unknown assassin targets him… Then, a strangely calm psychiatrist approaches Predaking. His name is Froid, and he claims to know Predaking's crimes but promises to treat him instead of report him. Something is not right about Froid—his house smells like blood and Froid offers Predaking body parts to help him with his urges. While Predaking redevelops himself and his relationships, he wonders if his psychiatrist is a serial killer using him to destroy the evidence. However, what is really going on is more dangerous than Predaking could have imagined... Froid is not alone. Something is living in his basement, and it is not Cybertronian... at least, not anymore.
Discovery: https://archiveofourown.org/works/41561898/chapters/104243646
After sparing Starscream at Darkmount, the Predacons choose to live out in the Cybertronian wilderness. However, the world is bigger than Predaking imagined and it isn't as easy as he thought to live alone. Starscream steps in to help, but only if the Predacons help him fend off Jetfire's hunting party. A rocky relationship turns friendly as Starscream and the Predacons explore postwar Cybertron, now flourishing with nature and animal life.
The group's journey ends when they become separated underground. Predaking has only Starscream at his side, and it’s up to them to find the other missing Predacons. As they search, they find abandoned laboratories of Shockwave, but an experiment named Waspinator warns them to stay away from the prisoners in stasis she was left to guard. All it takes is one to get free, before they all get free… Vos, Kaon, Helex, Tesarus, and Tarn.
Now Predaking is trapped underground in the tunnels with five highly dangerous Decepticons, each with their own deadly ability. And they share one goal: Kill Starscream and anyone who stands in their way.
*There is probably like 100 characters, different ones who star in the various stories
*Fanart is definitely welcome, just let everyone know what your art is based on!

Okay but to add onto the tags of my last reblog like. I feel like as far as Twitter/tumblr are concerned I'd have a pretty easy time logging off for the most part and becoming some type of cryptid that posts only 2 times a month but idk if I could ignore youtube Idk if I'm that strong
I'd def do the Scott Cawthon thing & email MatPat like "I saw your video it definitely gave me a laugh" like I could not help myself
Like idk tumblr theorists are def just having fun with what the creators have given them so I'd be able to just sit back like "this is cool, this is fun" but there's something about 10 minute video essays trying to "explain" the plot to people who don't "get it" (or are never going to play the game, lbr) that really annoys me and I don't think I could will myself into shutting up about it lol. Mostly I think it just has to do with a) the fact that YouTube is a monetized platform and b) like there is this...unspoken assumption that whatever conclusion the video's creator came to is The Correct Interpretation that I think deserves heckling from the original creator, like I wouldn't get on Twitter and blast someone's take on there but on YouTube I'd feel justified leaving a comment like "not quite but I like your enthusiasm"
Though tbh as much as that stuff might compel me come out of my burrow and comment it's definitely not as bad as just...the plethora of non-content on YouTube that makes its money off of just giving third-hand information about a thing. Like the minute Some Generic Deepvoice Dude who makes his living off of just spoiling the plot of other people's creative work (like idgaf about let's plays, let's plays are their own form of entertainment) by like, reading the wikipedia summary to a bunch of vaguely related screenshots tries to touch my stuff I'm gonna start barking, actually
Nothing channels that "report" on the latest popular thing, regurgitating barely researched controversy, spreading false information, and making heavily padded videos that barely say anything that can't be summarized in length of a single tweet but are just long enough to put ads in (40 second graphic about hitting the like & subscribe buttons included) are a literal plague and if I ever make anything worthwhile enough for those parasites to try and make money off of I will actually come for them I will go beast mode

Modern Death Metal Starter Pack.
Most People on my hosting site, tumblr, I have realized have miscategorized Death Metal. Honestly metal In general. So Here is a comprehensive list of modern death metal bands (2022)
sanguisugabogg
Tumblr media
(credit metalarchives)
While not the newest band on the list but formed around 2018-2019 the Ohio death metal band certainly are gaining hype. sanguisugabogg brings back the classic caveman brutal death metal sound. Its not like slam or faster death metal. its right in between, with a perfect amount of beastly energy like a calculated grotesque monster rather than an knuckle dragging neanderthal. at least on 2021's "Tortured Whole", Pornographic seizures has the band going as close to into a devourment style as they can. also alot of sexism that plagues death metal is taking away or done tastefully,
Sanguisugabogg can get grotesque but not in a way that's hatred. its more of playful 80's horror movie gore. or as much playful as that can be. I mean a giant kaiju toxic waste penis monster in the music video "gored in the chest" is not trying to be mean. also they smoke weed so most of there material is about that too.
youtube
Sanguisugabogg's tortured whole and pornographic seizures are on century media records.
2. Bodybox
Tumblr media
(credit - outburn.com)
Not to be confused with a specific pulmonary machine, is a self proclaimed "TWO FISTED, TWO STEPPIN, DOUBLE WIDE DEATH METAL" band from Orlando, Florida. Like many bands, Bodybox take heavy inspiration from the florida death metal aesthetic specifically obituary. Just imagine a stoner, a death metal fan and a extra off trailerparkboys and that's what bodybox is.
youtube
(video by 197 media)
they also have the most on brand and simple to understand lyrics of any death metal band. I sometimes (depending on the band) hate having to know a whole novel of fucking lore or waiting til the band (if ever) releases a track explanation on YouTube. so bodybox is really in this case while not open to interpretation or a lyrical masterpeace in storytelling, is still simple to understand and that is what I want out of a band like bodybox.
some of my favorite lyrics include -
"Would fight for cocaine Would you steal for cocaine Would you fuck for cocaine" - Carving (through the bongfire)
"Until you make contact with me You think your so tuff Till I pull out the resin blunt You still can’t understand this smoke" - resin scraper (microwaved weed)
bodybox's "microwaved weed" and "through the bongfire" are on maggot stomp records. Also Bodybox will be on a southern USA tour with Iam (tx), and rhythm of fear from November 3rd through the 18th.
Tumblr media
3. Frog Mallet.
I know most people would call Boston's Frog Mallet "slam" or "slamming beatdown" but they are also a death metal band in my humble opinion. And really when am I as journalist gonna write about lyrically based frog death metal bands again. like ever? So if your looking for only semi - serious bands frog mallet might be for you.
Tumblr media
surprisingly frog mallet strikes a good balance between some funny moments but the frog jokes tire out / become just comedy metal at that point / know when to be serious and not have smelly pretentious frog farts. Frog Mallet can spring up a good combination beatdown / slam riffs, near perfect gutturals and gurgly ribbits on the mic and lyrical story telling and lyrics that know there place in certain songs. specifically parodying the mosh callouts and repping area codes before breakdowns.
youtube
(FLASHING WARNING) [Video on Slam Worldwide]
"That's right bitch Guttural Toad is here to stay Fuck all you fake as frog pussies We're in leap town now motha fucka From the pond to the tank Real wart shit Frog Mallet Sludge of the Swamp" - Sludge of the Swamp (Dissection by Amphibiant)
I'm not sure if all music is on spotify, so here's there merch instead.
also frog mallet are fully independent / unsigned so please consider buying some shirts and music on bandcamp.
4. 200 Stab Wounds.
Tumblr media
(credit http://www.shuttlecockmusic.com/)
ohio's 200 stab wounds is the new face of old school death metal influenced modern death metal. if you took the guys in 200 stab wounds they wouldn't sound out of place on a 90's relapse records
youtube
(credit hate5six and lbd fest)
200 stab wounds' lyrics and riffs are like blunt force trauma. I'd compare it again to like a 80's slasher where the killer is on the loose and is stalking out his teenage prey. or better yet 05's hostel by Eli Roth ALSO ITS NOT A BUNCH OF RIFF SALAD. while some may pass off 200 stab wounds chalked as a osdm clone they also have (i wouldn't say technical but so much death metal drumming chops and shredding to make them a whole other class of there own and prove there naysayers dead fucking wrong.
youtube
whether that the stank face slamish riffs in the first minute of skin milk, or the in pocket dodgeball tone drums grooves and "diddly didy diddly do" licks on the end of itty bitty pieces, 200 stab wounds seem like a one big well oiled murderous blood thirsty machine ready to blast with hammers and saws.
200 Stab wounds are on maggot stomp records.
5. Undeath
Tumblr media
Rochester, NY natives undeath while kinda sounding like a dumb simple name to many is perfect to me. it really captures encapsulates what is so fundamental about death metal simple fun. While taking heavy influence from a cannibal corpse, its very cartoony horror. it reminds me of an evil dead in the sense that the mindless violence is a way to scare and shock as a way to entertain rather than prove a point. Many references like influences of video games quake and doom on songs like necrobionics (even having a slight reference maybe to the sega genesis game "altered beast" with "It's Time...To Rise From the Grave"), Romero and Fulci movies, cannibal corpse, body horror, scifi, and OH zombies. lots of zombies.
I don't have anything much else to say as I want you to go into this band blind and ready for anything, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LISTEN TO It's Time...To Rise From the Grave ITS SO GOOD. Its one of my favorite Death Metal releases this year.
Undeath is on prosthetic records.
I hope this list helped you find some new bands.
Love you
Bye.

GHOST IN THE RADIO
By Gabriel Salvador Contreras
“It’s ghost-like, isn’t it? That period between the ‘30s and ‘40s is between wars. And a lot of people had went to wars and never come back so there was a lot of uncertainty. It’s about ghosts, loss, and all these incredible lyrics. The weight of these tracks is incredible sometimes. Like one of the main guys I’ve sampled over the years, Al Bowlly, died in the war because a bomb landed on the house he was in. They say he would have been bigger than Bing Crosby, that he had a better voice. It’s very sad.” - Leyland Kirby (x)
The relationship within music and horror is quite as long as the history within humanity itself. When it comes to pop music though, we wouldn’t immediately assume there’s something sinister about it at first glance. The Caretaker is a solo project by Leyland Kirby, debuting in 1999 with “Selected Memories From the Haunted Ballroom”. The whole vibe from Caretaker is strongly nostalgic, moving, even anxiety inducing at times. One wouldn’t imagine such an artist would become extremely popular even with a younger generation, but this is proven wrong by the massive acclaim his LP, “Everywhere at the end of time”. From it’s terrifying yet realistic premise —a mind going through dementia, slowly forgetting everything about their lives, knowing as well the impact music makes in people’s memories and positive effects on dementia patients — to it’s atmospheric, slow progression into nothingness, nothing could predict its popularity in the internet sphere. The prevalence of this EP is so vast that it can be easily found — especially the first track, “A1 - It’s just a burning memory” — all over TikTok, YouTube memes, and with over four and a half million plays on Spotify. Considering it’s niche and artistic intent, one could easily forget about the music he’s sampling: ballroom, pop music from the 30’s and 40’s, as he says himself.
Was this music supposed to sound this eerie? Has pop music terrified listeners before like this? Could this be considered something undesired by the industry, would it stop it from be pop at all? In this text I’ll present my point of view about this matter. As I would love to make it longer, I’ll try to keep as concise as possible while I go through some examples of what I would consider some interesting cases of Pop turning a scare to the audience, songs being inspired by catastrophes that scarred the artists, or musicians that are just looking for a spook. PART 1: EVIL (IS GOING ON) - Before the 60s Fear has plagued the human mind since before history can reach itself. Therefore, we can assume that fear and the terrifying has been a common theme since folklore music. It’s deeply rooted in our brain, but when it comes to pop culture we might not notice at first how big of a theme it is. Here are some examples from various media where this phenomenon can be seen, usually songs with some religious subtext, Halloween, and “contemporary” witches, zombies and other spooks. Anatoly Liadov - Baba Yaga, Op. 56 (1904) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17szhwbiw_o   The House is Haunted by Roy Fox (1934) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoJj7dCbEX8
Howlin' Wolf - Evil (Is Going On) (1958) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osnDVXlhxPw
Playlist with more Examples -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SisxwnlEiq0
There's something interesting I notice at this time, in contrast to our first example, on how nostalgia is not really an horrific thought, or at least not a popular one, and, pretty common when it comes to popular music, it's mostly lighthearted. Usually, folk horror and creatures born from pop culture are the ones in the front of the stage most of the time. However, things slowly take some interesting turns, as we will see...

DIGITAL MARKETING ARTICLE
Digital Marketing Overview: Digital marketing is the latest approach to product promotion and sales in today's digitally evolved society. It is less expensive, simpler to administer, easier to evaluate, and easier to understand than traditional marketing. Almost instantly, campaigns may be adjusted to perform better and generate more sales. However, data mining has made it much more than a tool and is make it harmful as well. Because of the knowledge offered, it may appear as though customers can become the product. Let's examine both perspectives in the following article
The Value of Online Advertising : As previously stated, we live in a highly advanced technological society where anything is possible with the help of the internet. A website is all that's needed that allows internet advertising practical and how it operates. It is the central idea behind digital marketing. Digital marketing is the answer to changing the costs and availability issues that plague our society. Anyone, wherever in the world they may be, can readily access the internet. It is no longer reserved for a certain social class. Connecting with people is simpler and doesn't even require physical interaction. During modern times, digital advertising is excellent for organizations.
People may purchase anything they need online with extreme convenience and never have to leave their houses. It saves time and displays the different reviews that individuals have given. It's simple to assess charges throughout different websites then selecting the ones that best fulfills your needs. It is advantageous to people with disabilities since it can enable them to complete their tasks and lead independent lives.
Small and large enterprises alike benefit from it as well. If one learns how to go about it properly. entrepreneurs can advertise with less or pay a great deal less. Products frequently get viral without any marketing expenditures. It really aids small enterprises and gives them traction.
There are many types of digital marketing. One of them involves search engine optimization (SEO). It may help rank your website highly in search engine results. By increasing the amount of visits, this aids in marketing. This functions best when specific SEO terms are included in the website's content. One of the best ways to market is through social media, which also fosters relationships of trust by allowing you to interact with others. Both the effectiveness and the expense of it are excellent. Compared to conventional techniques of advertising, it aids a company in reading a more diverse yet focused audience. Any business may grow recognized for goods with the help of one famous video and internet. Bernie Sanders's chair-sitting, mitten-wearing meme serves as a single example. The individual who crafted those mitts received thousands of orders, and her enterprise flourished.
• Email advertising: Email marketing is email-based advertising. It discreetly delivers adverts directly to the recipient's email. This mostly occurs when users use their emails to gain access into retailers and other similar platforms.
• YouTube Channel: This type of marketing falls under social media as well, but it includes a different aspect. Many people create films for their enormous fan base, reviewing various items and services. When there are positive evaluations, a lot of people rush to buy a product or service.
The Issue with Online Advertising The analysis of data represents some one of the primary issues regarding digital marketing. The purchasing of user data is not prohibited by any laws or regulations. The user can be described as having become a product due to the depth of its use.
There is a conspiracy theory that suggests we are being watched. That isn't far from the reality, though. Ex-staff members of Google, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and other companies have discussed the amount of data being remaining on visitors' websites when they use social media platforms. Marketers purchase this data in order to use it to target particular demographics with their offerings. These websites are made to entice users to return and interact with them. Similar to an addiction. The extent to which purchase rates rose during the shutdown serves as evidence of this. This indicates that social media is no longer just a tool and is becoming dangerous.

ITF M25 Loughborough (Jan 8) F: Kyle Edmund def. Martyn Pawelski 6-4, 6-4 Match Recap
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kyle Edmund's points to 1-1* 15-30 (top left), *2-3 30-30 (top right), 3-3* 15-30 (bottom left), and to take the first set 6-4 (📸 🎥 ITF Media via LTA's official YouTube)
Battle of generations emerged in this week's final of the ITF M25 Loughborough, where former World No. 14 and 2018 Australian Open semifinalist Kyle Edmund, who stunned first seed Charles Broom 6-7(10), 6-4, 6-3, faced Martyn Pawelski, who defeated seventh seed Cannon Kingsley 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) in the semifinals yesterday. While K. Edmund's comeback is still plagued by injuries, even until the end of last year, this match could be an interesting test for either player to check on not only K. Edmund's fitness (and form), but also M. Pawelski's progress over the months.
After two consecutive holds, K. Edmund started the match aggressively through his down-the-line approaches, firing a forehand down-the-line winner to set himself one point ahead in that game, but M. Pawelski got himself out of trouble to hold his service game 2-1. By the end of that game, K. Edmund took a medical timeout, but everything turned out to be fine as he tried to appear more aggressive. However, K. Edmund still took several risks since M. Pawelski had a break point out of the Brit's cross-court backhand error several moments after the Brit recovered the deficit through a running forehand down-the-line winner. It turned out to be a massive hold for K. Edmund to 3-3.
Subsequently, K. Edmund's aggression started to take effect as the former World No. 14 capitalized on M. Pawelski's previous unforced errors, firing a cross-court backhand winner to open his path before breaking to 4-3. K. Edmund followed this up with a consolidation to 5-3, and had the chance to serve for the first set two games later, where he eventually did to set himself in front in this match by taking it 6-4.

M. Pawelski tried to step up in the second set, but K. Edmund stayed solid despite the possible hiccups coming his way. Right in the first game of the second set, K. Edmund's cross-court forehand created some damage 2 points in before he broke to 1-0 to start the second set. After a consolidation (2-0), K. Edmund fired another one to create his break point in hopes for a demolition, but that game ended in a massive hold for M. Pawelski to 2-1. Four consecutive holds later, M. Pawelski started to become even more offensive by trying to outhit K. Edmund's shots, firing a forehand pass to secure his break points before K. Edmund replied to them with an unreturned serve and some winners to finally hold that service game 5-3. In that game, K. Edmund have 3 match points on return, 2 of which were saved through M. Pawelski's intuitive volleys. The Pole ended up still holding his service game to 5-4, thus K. Edmund had to serve for the match, where a backhand gone too wide from M. Pawelski closed the point, thus K. Edmund took the second set 6-4 to secure his title.
This marked K. Edmund's first ITF-level title since 2014, as well as his first overall title since the New York (250) event in 2020. Setting his comeback in the right direction, he is approximately back to 537 in the live rankings, while a runner-up placing brought M. Pawelski closer with 550 live. The next ITF tournament in the United Kingdom's indoor swing is the M25 Sunderland next week, where K. Edmund is a direct entrant. With a more stacked entrants as of now, this could be intriguing to see the direction of the comeback!

bo burnham, normans, and white guy whimsy
after having revisited another one of his songs today, the fire has been rekindled and i have once again been compelled to bitch and whine on the internet about shit that doesnt matter
so i was watching a video about old growth forests when I noticed all of the interviewees were fifty-something-year-old-white guys. not that i have anything against the titular everyman, ofc. the vast majority of professionals in almost every field are said white guys who began their careers in the 80s and 90s.
and of course, neurons fired and i was remined of bo burnhams 1985.
youtube
a song about the favorable socioeconomic conditions that allowed white dudes in the 80s get ahead where other demographics faced (and still face to this day) a litany of systemic hurdles
but then i see bitches all up in the comments thinking the song is about dads??????? and not even a minority, ALL OF THE COMMENTS ARE BITCHES TALKING ABOUT THEY FATHERS
like ????????????hello?
im sorry(im not), how fucking media illiterate can you be
takes like these plague the rest of inside's discography as well, and it makes me feel like im fucking crazy.
every single song has its meaning completely ignored by its primary consumers. it kinda scares me a bit actually, especially when burnhams work is so transparently a social commentary . what hope do we have if the majority of people consume content this way, especially as the content we consume becomes our only window into the wider world.
(of course extrapolating the general cultural consensus on a work from youtube comments, even ones at the top of the list, isnt exactly a rigorous form of assesment. but wtf, yknow.)
tiktokification is upon us,
stay safe out there
og thought :
"throughout tonights whole ordeal, "look whos inside again" has been playing on loop. i thought itd be funny in a kind of ridiculous/pitiful way to die listening to fucking inside. in fact, its still looping as i type this here foundation of my yas queen girlboss manifesto"

Fun Facts About “Of Two Minds”
Tumblr media
As you may have heard, my latest story, “Of Two Minds” was published in Starlite Pulp Review #2. It is the third in the Lady Sheriff Series. If you’re interested in reading my story, you can buy a copy of the review here. This post is about the fun facts / behind the scenes of this story. Enjoy!
This is not the first time I used the title “Of Two Minds” for a story. Years ago, I wrote a fantasy story by the same title, which was rejected by everyone and their brother. Just as it should have been. Since it was a failed story, I took the title and used it for this tale. The title actually suits this story better and matches up with the themes.
https://youtu.be/h2Ccbjp3hCg
The song, “Hang Out the Stars in Indiana” sung by Al Bowlly, is featured in “Of Two Minds.” A British singer, he was known for “The Very Thought of You” and “Melancholy Baby,” he tragically died in a Luftwaffe Parachute Mine explosion in 1941.
Tumblr media
Sheriff Claire Williams wears her badge when she’s on duty, and carries it around in her purse when she’s off-duty, in case she needs to put it on. I’ve tried to do research, to figure out what a sheriff’s badge from Indiana in the 1930s, and haven’t been able to come up with anything. I found this cute little badge on Temu and it matches what I’ve described in the series. I put my little badge next to an old 1917 postcard: the note is from one great-great grandmother to another, and mentions Edith giving birth to Margaret. Edith was my great-grandmother, whose story and a bit of her personality inspired Claire Williams. And Margaret was my grandma, whose stories of the past inspired many of my writings.
There’s a character named Isom in the story. On my mom’s side of the family, we have an ancestor named Isom.
Deputy Joseph Frank is a series regular character and I imagine him looking like a young Steve Buscemi.
Tumblr media
Blackbirds show up in “Of Two Minds.” If you’re a Terre Haute/Wabash Valley native, you’re familiar with the plague of blackbirds that show up every October and torture us until the following spring. I used to live in the center of town and the birds were so bad there, when they flew in hordes over us, we’d have to run from the house to the car – or visa versa – carrying newspapers over our heads to avoid their… deposits. Our cars would be coated in a grotesque mix of white, brown, red, and black. Very nasty business.
“Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” is featured in this story, sung by Deputy Frank. I consider it the theme song for this series.

In my continual research of this time period and of the lady sheriffs in the early 20th century in general, I came across this fascinating clip on YouTube. It took me a few months, but I was able to learn the sheriff’s full name was Sheriff Jennie Walker. Her journey to sheriff was a little different from those who inherited their positions from their deceased husbands. After her husband’s failed campaign, upon the encouragement of the locals, Jennie Walker campaigned for the position and was elected…she was the first woman to be elected sheriff in Kentucky! She served the people faithfully and was respected by all. Special thanks to Knox Historical Museum for answering my many questions about Sheriff Jennie Walker. She’s become yet another part of the inspiration for my Lady Sheriff Series.

How commercial interests (e.g., media ownership, advertising) influenced my media use and experience.
Personally, having a lot of pre-internet era experience – I remember when repetitive advertisements were not shoved down our throats every five minutes, from every angle. According to industry professionals, in 2021 alone, Canada spent 11.2 billion US dollars (North America spent 296.4 billion USD). Because these corporations need to generate revenue through advertisements – there’s a fine line between making money and providing accurate information. Knowing marketing research is done to influence consumer behavior and habits: psychologically, socially, culturally, personally, and economically. Advertisers are biased because they provide biased content to target, influence, and favor consumers. Since the adoption of analytics (or perhaps my awareness to it), it has made me want to stay away from this plague of abuse – which feels more like a weaponry tool used to coerce, manipulate, and condition its users.
Since the Canadian media industry is governed by a combination of private and public markets, it is not a free market. Politicians use and abuse media for their own political purpose, like government funded broadcasting (CBC) which is heavily biased. Commercial exploitation: social media uses techniques to manipulate, bully, and exploit people.
News is supposed to be newsgathering: doing news research. Today what we have is propaganda – a highly persuasive form of communication that frames issues and topics toward a particular interest or view. I view media ownership and advertising as increasingly misleading and deceptive. I personally have become completely uninterested in participating in the manipulation games: I don’t watch advertisement-based television, I subscribe to Spotify for podcasts, and I pay for YouTube premium, all to avoid the bombardment of persuasion.

A New Movie Review: Just Passing Thru
Every season there are numerous short videos and longer 'movies' that show up on Youtube. We haven't reviewed a movie here for some time. The break has been well worth the wait. Australian Courtney Eve White has crafted a film that has more to offer than one might think. Courtney, herself comes across as quite likable in how she appears on screen and in her voice overs. She pulls the viewer in and along every step of her journey.
On day one she describes her feelings and those around her as being, "... giddy like preschoolers." Anyone who has taken those first steps from the southern terminus can relate to Courtney's description. She goes on to describe why she has been drawn to the trail. She sees her experience as a, "...natural progression...[to] evolve and be humbled". Maybe Courtney is telegraphing here but she expresses her feelings throughout this film with such conviction that you are cheering for her from the first minutes.
Within those first few minutes we learn that a chronic knee injury has left her feeling hobbled. I wasn't entirely convinced of that description as she appears to crush miles throughout the film. However this malady continues to plague her into northern California and doesn't appear to slow her down or get dropped by her trail family (tramily).
Courtney's trail family becomes a real touchstone. At one point we learn that it grows as large as fifteen hikers. Later it shrinks down to a more manageable three to five people. We don't exactly get to know these other hikers but their faces become more and more familiar as the film goes along.
Courtney does an excellent job of showing viewers and describing for us what the numerous resupplies look like and the value and dependence more and more PCTers have on water caches. She does not offer an opinion about any of this but more importantly gives us a clear window into her experiences. She does express much gratitude for the many trail angels that supported her and her friends throughout her hike.
One element to this film I appreciated was the film maker's descriptions of the ups and downs of trail life. Whether it is overcoming the uncertainty of hitchhiking, waking up to realize she has fallen asleep on an ant colony, or the general anxiety about what is waiting just ahead, her impressions are honest and relatable. I especially loved her observations such as when she is moving through the Sierra and says, "The Sierra forced me to come to terms with a part of me I have never met." As she is descending Mount Whitney she describes her experience of seeing the sunrise from the top as, " The best morning of my life so far." I knew she meant it. I remembered feeling the same way.
The images throughout this film are quite good. I found that as I watched the images go by I recognized so many of those places etched into my memory. I could identify with Courtney and her friends covered up and under head nets suffering from swarms of mosquitoes. Her honest demeanor in the face of challenges and triumphs she had never experienced come through in every minute of this wonderful film.
I admit to a pet peeve with films like this. The majority of these films sing the praises of the Sierra and spend a lot of time there. North of the Sierra gets short shrift with Oregon getting not much attention at all. Lastly, Washington gets wrapped up in the usual final minutes. Not here. Courtney gives time and words to everywhere north of the Sierra. She admits to the concept of the "Norcal blues". She tells us about the ebb and flow of trail life and how much beauty there is beyond the Sierra. Courtney shares that, " Washington [is] more than I could have ever expected." Comments such as that helped me appreciate the balance present in this film.
Finally the music chosen to accompany the images and commentary is nothing but complimentary. One song that comes through as Courtney makes her way north of Stevens Pass really captures the moment and the images we are pulled into. It sings of being out in the open. We are and it is beautiful.
As Courtney closes in on the end of her hike she says things like, " [There is a] balloon inflating inside of you filled with love for the places you've seen and the people you've [met]." She wonders if she has changed. I would say if she has changed, and only she really knows that, she has grown in so many ways. Interestingly she doesn't feel she has trail legs until she is all the way north in Washington. This young person is certainly moved and changed by her experience and we get to witness that in 'Just Passing Thru'.
We give these films a 'Clif Bar' rating. I would easily give this a five Clif Bar rating out of five. If you only watch a few minutes of this remarkable film you won't be disappointed. It is refreshing to see a film like this one. It is humble and given how 2022 ended for many thru hikers Courtney represents the class of 2022 very well.
