OC in 15 Tag Game

Thanks to the @the-down-upside-finch for the tag! It was forever ago and I think I need to redo my Tumblr intro to warn people that I do all my replies in bursts and I still love you all...

Rules: Share 15 or fewer lines of dialogue from an OC, ideally lines that capture the character/personality/vibe of the OC. Bonus points for just using the dialogue without other details about the scene, but you're free to include those as well!

I will, of course, be honoring my beloved Arlasaire today with a combo of spoken dialogue and narration. That being said, I don't really write good out-of-context bangers lines lol -- everything only barely works because of the context. (I wish I was. I'm not that cool though.)

"And it was my fault! Because I wasn’t enough!"

"You don’t care about me."

"You don’t know me."

"Nesa… I warned Zal so I’ll warn you too: I’m not very good at relationships."

"…I’m not a lady. The Aftokratoria has stripped away our titles, remember?"

"I was just House d’Magnia’s ward. They took me in after a Dragonstorm burnt down my village. Fed me. Trained me. Gave me purpose."

On that first day after they found me, — back before I was “Arlasaire”— I’d been the one to kill the spider crabs chasing Lord Einharde’s second lieutenant.

"Lord Einharde embodied the House words with all his heart. “Eshew Axiom for Ascendancy.” This made him cold, but he was good to me."

His name rotted in my memory now.

"…The Arlasaire you knew a year ago would not have slaughtered anyone, if YOU had asked."

I felt the familiar knife twist in my chest. I stifled laughter. Euphoria. What a beautiful liar…

The Burned Maiden bled from the body and it was just the girl. Just me.

"And then… I fell for this priestess lady. We kissed. And then… she also tried to kill me."

"It is too cold and dark to be kind. Spring is not like this in the North. You have to actually wear clothes."

"You… like me? Are we… a thing?"

...Guys, Arlasaire's so edgy and angsty, omg. I swear, she's actually a huge softie underneath, she's just not feeling safe in the narrative... And familiar toxicity feels safe...

I discovered this back in December, during Yssaia week. I had interest in covering this song, but the way the lyrics fell against the instrumental in the middle portion was a bit difficult for me to follow. This version contains modifications for some of the lyrics and the melody.

The recording quality of my voice drops towards the end a bit, some of my singing doesn't 100% fit the beat, but I'm happy enough to finally cover this song.

Art Day 3 I made a better portrait for this OC that I made to fit into my friend @amaiguri's big world building project. In short, she's a weaponsmith who makes very high-quality but impractical/ dangerous-to-use weapons, like her personal choice of "hammer that explodes on impact." She asked me to give some extra details about who this person is to go with this art, to which I responded:

Favorite food is any kind of meat that has been breaded and fried.

In addition to weaponsmithing, she's a fairly decent carpenter (from repairing damaged walls, furniture, etc. that broke during weapon testing).

Someone once tried to pick a fight with her on a bridge, so she picked him up and threw him into the river before carrying on like nothing happened.

The WIP Questionaire

Thanks so so much from @verba-writing for the tag! I had such a fun time reading your answers too and I'm very excited for paranormal romance 😍

I feel like I wanna flag that a lot of my answers are very anime/gaming-sphere oriented and I hope I'm not totally alienating my mutuals by revealing just HOW MUCH I'm not a book person lololol But this is with what we're working:

The Questions are:

1. What was the first part of your wip that you created?

The very first thing I made was the high premise: It was synthesized from the Overly Sarcastic Productions question "What if all the Kings Under the Mountain came back...?" and then I added the context "...in a Nuclear Crisis to discuss piece?" And in my head, it was this HBO-style modern fantasy Game of Thrones meets West Wing type deal. But then... I didn't want to write the modern piece. (The modern piece should be written by people in countries from all over Europe about what it means to be a hero in various cultures.)

So I set it in 1800s fantasy world instead!

2. If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?

The first arc would be Dance in the Game by Zaq

The second arc would be Lacrimosa by Kalafina

The Gods' Arc would be Paper Boquet by Mili

3. Who are your favourite characters you've made? Why?

Is it to cliché to be like "my current self-insert protagonist is my favorite character I've ever made"? Her and my antagonist are just THE BEST and I love them.

4. What other pieces of media do you think would share a fan base for your story?

Mmm, I think Untitled Yssaia Game's story would appeal to queer Game of Thrones fans who could FEEL the straightness in GoT, especially if they also like anime. I would hope I could get general anime fans as well as Arcane and Genshin Impact fans, but I feel like those are too mainstream and Yssaia is not. Realistically, I think I'm gonna get the Wadanohara people and the Ib people and, if I get really lucky, the To the Moon people.

5. What has been your biggest struggle with your wip?

Marketing lol -- explaining what it is to people in a way that they realize they want it.

6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!

Fuafua 🥺🥺🥺

Look at her! She is a six-legged, six-eyed slug cat called a Maret. Marets fill the same role as ocelots in Yssaia, except they're more semi-aquatic like otters and their skin has a stressball-like texture.

7. How do your characters get around? (ex: trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)

They walk or ride Rumateurs (which are alpaca-like beings with ossicones) or take ships or airships or trains. I don't like writing about travel that much though so it is a background element.

8. What part of your wip are you working on rn?

I am pre-editing the first arc for my alpha readers and the third arc has another 50k to 100k words to draft. We're at like 250k words total right now and it is so unwieldy 😭😭😭

9. What aspects (tropes, maybe?) of your wip do you think will draw people in?

Oh, I have a convenient graphic for this. Hang on...

10. What are your hopes for your wip?

I was just diatribing about this earlier but the DREAM is to turn it into an RPGmaker adventure game and have it go viral and make a million bucks off it. I'd love to be the next Undertale but it'll never happen because I am not positioned to be the next Undertale, you know?

Character Voice Tag

Thank so much to @the-down-upside-finch for tagging me in this AMAZING challenge omg omg I'm so hype for this! In the past, I was told my character voicing SUCKED so I have worked so so hard at geting better... no idea if I'm winning now, but I'm doing my best and am open to feedback at any time!

The premise is: Write a specific sentence in several characters' voices -- you can ALSO use a single action line to help, but the focus is on syntax!

My sentence is "Would you like help with that?"

I think, the thing about voice, is that 99% of the time strong voiciness comes from specific context. And I can see somany of my characters maliciously offering to help as a way to put someone down/imply that they're incompetent...

So I will specify further -- each of these characters is genuinely offering help to YOU, someone they respect, as you start to lift a heavy box. Let's JUMP INTO IT!

Kalliopeia, the Philosopher King: "Would you like help with that?"

Riavh Solais, the Once and Future Emperor: "Oh, please let me help you there!"

Singr Sa, a Runaway Princess: "Uh... you need help?"

Xizi, the Saegen Princess who didn't run away: "Should I help you with that?"

Zalathiel, the Inquisitor General: *eyebrow raised as you struggle* "...Do you need help with that?"

Nesa, Lt.-Inquisitor General: "You got that, little one?"

Saravanya, Champion of the Abyss: *Uses Telekinesis to lift box for you*

Diacaius, 2nd Senator of Telethens: *Sauntering up* "Oh, please -- allow me!"

Arlasaire, the Soldier-Maiden of Thuille: "Don't." *Grabs the box from you, almost drops it*

...Apparently, most of my characters do not ask permission to help you if they like you. They absolutely impose their help upon you. 😭😭😭

Worldbuilding in 5

Thank you @anyablackwood for tagging me, even if it was forever ago! I'm trying to get back on top of things and catch back up! "Rules: post 3-5 images of a place in your world and tell us a bit about it."

After the fall of Old Thuille, a city-state secluded in the mountains rose in its place. A home to Noble Mages escaping the Saegen markings who could carry on the legacy of Old Thuille. Or so they claim. Their hot springs, rich mineral resources for an easy industrialization, and their affinity for magic has prepared for the return of their Emperor. However, quite often, their hubris gets the best of them...

Nouveau Thuille is very cold and only gets sun twice a day -- at dawn and dusk, when it can creep in during the sides of the mountain. It snows year round, but the hotsprings ensure that humans can actually survive here somewhat reasonably. While humans cannot drink the hotsprings water directly, their animals can and humans have learned to purify it further since -- as well as melt snow and ice for their water.

You've reminded me now that I need to do fashion sketches for the people of Thuille. I've had their fashion the most defined and least changed since the beginning and I gotta come back to it... O_O

Character Voice Tag

Thanks to @spideronthesun for the tag this time! This is my second time through on this tag but, as I said last time, I need the practice.

Premise: We have a line of dialogue and we have to write it like our characters would say it! And while we can use voice tags or actions to help, the goal is to emphasize character voice through syntax and diction.

My sentence is:

I miss you.

Now, as I said last time, I like to make the context really specific -- because that determines how the character will actually say it. For my context, I want the character to be writing this to a long distance lover or significant other whom they miss desperately. Let's see what they say!

Arlasaire: "I miss you."

Riavh: "Every day, my heart aches more from our parting. But I pray the Gods will bring us safely together once more."

Lucienne: "I do hope you aren't pining after me too miserably -- but you can kiss my lip prints on this letter and pretend."

Kalliopeia: "If I discover a gap in my knowledge, I go to you with a frequency that my language model indicates is USUALLY. But while you are absent, what I do is UNDEFINED. My emotional core indicates this meets the threshhold for LONGING. I LONG for you to return."

Kivihk: "It feels like a part of me is missing when you aren't here. Hurry home ;)"

Diacaius: "To be frank, I do find myself unexpectedly lost in your absence -- but not to any extent that it should worry you."

Kalliopeia is so hard to write because, when she's with people she trusts or if you're in her POV, she's basically reading out the C# code she's executing. 😭😭😭 But from other peoples' perspectives, she has an excellent language model that would probably pass a Turing Test or a Chinese Room.

Since I just reworked Kivihk, I especially need to dig into his linguistic landscape... hmmm 🤔

Happy WBW! [sorry for getting to this so late in the day ('o.o)] What can you tell me about the writing systems of the world?

EEE CONLANGING! So writing originated in my world from recording how you draw spells. Most places used a pseudo-logography except in the last 3 generations here: Due to industrialization and war, governments have simplified a lot of languages so the average person can access them easier!

You probably want to see them now... so here they are :DDDDD

Sealtongue doesn't have its own writing system -- but it COULD. Cuz it's a Tokiponita so it only has like 120-something words... maybe it could have a logography easier...

Anyway, that's the tl;dr of my writing systems!

Worldbuilding My Magic System FOR REAL

So Yssaia has HAD a pretty developed magic system for a while. And to recap it for you... I'm going to paste my half of me raving about this on Discord (thank you to @zebee-nyx and @galacticsand and @reaperofcrows for being so cool and letting me be an unhinged worldbuilding mad lad XD):

"What is Ysse?"

So the way Ysse works is its basically invisible dust floating in the air. And if it hits itself at certain velocities and in certain volumes, "spontaneous effects" happen -- like water materializing out of "nowhere" or fire exploding or wind gusts. You're limited a little by Avatar Last Airbender bending logic (you can't summon fully sapient creatures, you can't teleport, you can't control people's minds unless you're like... touching their nervous system, etc.)

So Mages invented the first writing as a way to record what patterns of movement did what. And eventually, used them to communicate these patterns as a shorthand for more generalized concepts...

So writing also got invented sometimes BEFORE agriculture...

"How precise do these movements/velocities need to be?"

It needs to be PRETTY precise. And this is why the average person CAN'T learn magic -- because Ysse in low amounts is invisible to the average person

But mages can see Ysse, which helps a lot. And they can see these shapes OCCURING in the natural world too -- when the wind blows, its because Ysse particles FORMED the Wind Rune/Sigil in the sky BUT this still doesn't guarantee that they cast any spells if they don't have the physical discipline too

So, in theory, "anyone" COULD move their hands PERFECTLY to spontaneously start a fire. But they PROBABLY won't

"How does this impact the natural world?"

This is also how animals and plants can do magic too. Tree roots in the north have roots that have specific patterns that warm up the soil, so snow can actually MELT and give them water and the tree doesn't die

And this is also my excuse for why so many things have bunny ears -- normally, long ears in colder-than-average climates (i.e. All of Yssaia) would be bad. But in Yssaia, these long ears are convergently evolving to channel Ysse. What they channel, exactly, I haven't decided (probably heat lol or something to increase air density so sound travels farther???)

AND all this is ALSO why the Demons are such an abomination -- because their Blood Magic doesn't obey particle physics, they just fucking do whatever they want

"Why do you need to know all this?"

The question at this point, I guess, is basically "How do I make fantasy technology that looks whimsical but also looks at least hypothetically functional under closer scrutiny?"

Yeah, and the full Answer TM to that right now is just <insert the entire design philosophy I haven't discovered yet here>

"So how IS magic going to shape technology, when you design it for the Untitled Yssaia Video Game?"

...Yeah, okay, after brainstorming all this, I think here's my strategy for how I'm going to tackle technology:

Step 2) Create a master list of technologies I will worry about/actually visualize in the game I will want to keep an OPEN LIST so I can add more things to it as I do research/find really specific use cases (such as scrollcases or chopstick holders)

Step 1) Establish symbols for a handful of common things in both the North and the South that at least vaguely make sense with the concept of the particles. So things like: - Fire/Heat - Water/Melt - Ice/Slow - Wind/Quicken - Earth/Apply Force - Sun/Light - Moon/Closing/Locking (Thanks to @zebee-nyx for this one!)

Step 3) Design simple sprites for things that can later be shrunk down and used as set-dressing for maps BUT at a little bigger in scale so they can be shown to other people sensibly (maybe on the same sheet at the walking animations for scale?)

AND WITH THAT, after 5 years of only vaguely imagining all this, this is what I designed, using a combination of symbols I had already designed and dice that I pushed around on my desk to see what kind of patterns they'd make:

Are some of these a little funky and don't really work with real particle physics? Yeah, fair. I'll take notes, if you got 'em. I'm open to critique, if you wanna lol

Last comment that didn't make it into the big discussion with my buds tonight: Ysse particles are how temperature is distributed. So, hot areas have fewer, cold areas have more. I know that isn't how thermodynamics work but does anyone else really?

(Something something eldritch horror thermodynamics post... And my magic-god is an eldritch horror! See? It's perfect!)

🃏 - What in your world is so out there that it baffles everyone? An example from our world could be whales that are so huge we can't imagine it, or medical advances.

The weirdest thing in Yssaia is probably the true nature of the gods.

Basically all of my gods are body horror eldritch monstrocities. And the humans in my world don't like to think about them like this. Like, the God of Earth birthed humanity in this giant cavern. It's covered in pink fungi that are definitely not made of the God's flesh... or the God of Magic requires your eye for you use magic. Or the Radiant God is a magic fungus that makes you sapient.

The humans treat gods basically how you might treat any powerful person. But they are much more wiley and incomprehensible than that...
