Randomly stumbled on this and I'm fascinated. For the first 20 years most of the songs sound like they have the same couple of vocalists, and it's not until 1986 that the tone becomes more "J-pop" and less "lounge singer entertaining retirees." The animation quality is...well. The pace of the action is slower, even in the fight sequences, and there are seconds-long stretches where nothing is happening, which would be unthinkable today.
As of 1999, when I paused to start writing this, there have been two songs that I would put on a playlist (no prizes for guessing which two). I've seen three of the featured shows so far and do not wish to see the others. Unpausing.... 2000, _there's_ the sudden jump in animation quality. There's the big eyes and fight sequences I'm used to. 2001 and now we've discovered edgy dark imagery and on-screen violence. 2004, and for the first time I think "that bit there looks genuinely cool." From here on I recognize every show and it hurts, because my brain thinks of them as modern. 2009 and peak shounen has been achieved, the rest of the genre can go home now. 2019 and suddenly no I _don't_ recognize these shows, damn it, almost as if our group weekly anime night got cancelled for five years straight or something. And the top for 2024 is....what IS that? What are the youth of today even watching? It's funny. If this compilation represented what I knew about anime, I would have zero interest in ever watching any of it. I might in fact cross the street to avoid it. "Popularity" is a very deceptive metric.

Kalafina 10th Anniversary LIVE 2018 at Nippon Budokan 1080p by  Anime Melancholy
More good music for background/productivity, especially for the early daylight part of an all-nighter.
Just thinking about how I love Kajiura Yuki’s music and her bands (Kalafina, Fiction Junction, See Saw, etc.) because the tone is so haunting and melancholy but also hopeful, and how different their music sounds.  Then Kalafina introduced their band members, giving several musicians time for short solos: pianist, flutist, accordion player, violinist, etc.  I remembered Sideways saying something about how most band music hasn’t changed for a long time because it’s mostly just “drummer, guitarists, vocalist” combos.  Kalafina sounds so different and I love it. *.*

'Princess Principal: Crown Handler' Sequel Films Licensed for International Distribution
Tumblr media
On May 6, Sentai Filmworks announced that it had acquired distribution rights to the Princess Principal Crown Handler film series. The series is based on the franchise of the same name and continues the story where the original anime TV series (also licensed by Sentai) left off.
Tumblr media
Sentai Filmworks describes the series:
Following the attempted assassination of the Queen, manhunts for spies become a frequent occurrence within the Kingdom. In response, Control — the Commonwealth’s covert operations group — begins to suspect the presence of a double agent within the Kingdom’s royal family. In order to reveal the truth, Control dispatches spy ring “Team White Pigeon.” But danger lurks around every corner, and when you don’t know who you can trust, being a spy has never been more perilous for Ange and the rest of Team White Pigeon.
The first film in the six-part series opened on February 11, after being delayed from its originally slated April 2020 premiere due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Tumblr media
The films are produced at studio Actas and directed by Masaki Tachibana. They feature a score by Demon Slayer's Yuki Kajura. Their cast includes Aoi Koga as Ange, who was originally portrayed by Ayaka Imamura prior to her retirement in June 2018. Koga stars alongside returning cast members:
Akira Sekine
You Taichi
Akari Kageyama
Nozomi Furuki
Sentai will distribute the films in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America, Nordics, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Spain, and Portugal. The first movie will launch on select streaming outlets in Spring 2021.

♬ - Do you listen to music when you write? If yes, what kind of music?
Munday Blues / accepting~
{ I usually do yeah. The kind of music tends to vary on my mood, though I will generally try to match my soundtrack to the vibe of whatever it is I’m writing.
Although you get interesting situations like a thread with the muse heavily flirting was written while listening to The Wiggles’ cover of Six Months in a Leaky Boat.

First (2nd) Episode ~ Lord El-Melloi II Case Files: Grace Note
I am so thrilled to see Waver Velvet (one of my favorite characters) get his own side series. Episode Zero back on New Years had me instantly itching for me, so naturally the actual release of the series was the only thing I’ve been looking forward to this summer (definitely not the heat) and I couldn’t be happier.  Waver and Iskander were such a wonderful duo, and my sweet boy learned to be a man from the king of conquerors. I love how their relationship is still such a big deal and a driving force in Wavers life.  I really enjoy the new characters that they’ve already introduced and I can’t wait for more! Wooo Saturdays have an even bigger reason to be great now.
This is a different animation studio that Fate/Zero, but I still find the are beautiful and visually stunning. Especially all the character designs. And of course you can’t really have a SOLID fate series without Yuki Kajura’s gorgeous soundtrack, so naturally and fan wriggled over the music during each moment.
Call me a fan girl, but this is definitely my most anticipated series of the season!

In other "what's Alice watching?" News, PandoraHearts ticks all my boxes: gear/clockwork motifs, Yuki Kajura music, childhood inspired creepy things like dolls, and a potentially batshit, certainly complex female lead with a cool design and the ability to kick the shit out of things (seriously if I had the funds to do it well I would totally cosplay Alice, name similarity aside).
Legit, this show reminds me of watching Avatar or Teen Titans when I was a kid, and I've exclaimed "cool!!!" Multiple times. It's so much fun.

Oh boy. I have so much music, and so little of it has lyrics. Seriously, this playlist is 194 hours long, and mostly videogame OSTs. I had to skip so many songs that were purely vocables or chorale. In point of fact, after ten minutes spent skipping probably a hundred tracks with no vocals, I went and pruned the list. Probably hit some things with vocals, but so be it.
Here we go:
Us and Them - Pink Floyd. And in the end it’s only round ‘n round (round, round, round)
Poor Fool, He Makes Me Laugh - Andrew Lloyd Webber. Poor fool, he doesn’t know! Hoho, Hoho!(I believe this is my least favorite track from Phantom.)
The Miracle - Queen. If every leaf on every tree, could tell a story that would be a miracle, If every child on every street, had clothes to wear and food to eat, That’s a miracle (Picking a single lyric from this song is a sin, I swear.)
The World (Extra version) - Yuki Kajura. I am here alone again / in my sweet serenity / hoping you will ever find me in any place / I will call it solitude when all my songs fade in vain / fly my voice, far away to eternity
A Stray Child - Yuki Kajiura (featuring Emily Bindiger). if you are lost in your way / deep in an awesome story / don’t be in doubt and stray / cling to your lonesome folly
