4, 9, 13, 19 for the book ask <3
hel yes ty
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?
hmm i don't really do a lot of author-based reading so i guess not? though i am planning on checking out more of kj charles' stuff
9. Did you get into any new genres?
ROMANCE! (of the queer variety). for some reason i never read romance like. at all. even though i read so many fics. probably because of the bias against it as a 'trashy' genre but yeah after how much i enjoyed the will darling adventures by kj charles i added a bunch more to my tbr
Also memoir-style non fiction - before i read "maybe you should talk to someone: a therapist, her therapist, and our lives revealed" by lori gottlieb i kinda thought that non fiction had to be learning something or really dry so i avoided it... but i read five memoirs this year:
- the therapist one as mentioned - emotional female by yumiko kadota (her experience as a doctor in the aus medical system) - so sad today: personal essays by melissa broder - eggshell skull by bri lee (consent law in queensland) - insomniac city by bill hayes
-- all of which I really enjoyed apart from...
13. What were your least favorite books of the year?
insomniac city -- started reading this bc id heard of oliver sacks (rly wlel known pop science neurologist) and i didnt know he was gay. (bill hayes was his partner). i just didnt connect with hayes or his portrayal of sacks lol. it was ranged from questionably racist to boring to cringe from an abundance of ~fake deep~ quotes which i really dont like
all my puny sorrows by miriam toews (i really thought id like this from the synopsis but the only reason i managed to finish it was bc i listened to the audiobook while i was walking or doing chores)
19. Did you use your library?
Yes! I resolved to (mostly) stop pirating books this year so i used my library's ebook service a lot. still yet to borrow a physical book though lol though ive been planning to since some are only available as physical

Surgeon Hospitalized for 6 Weeks After Working 180-Hour Shifts, Gets Called an ‘Emotional Female’
In a blog post on Feb. 4, Dr. Yumiko Kadota, 31, recalled the copious amounts of time she had spent working at “Hospital X,” which news outlets later revealed as Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital.
She added, “It wasn’t just the patients. An emergency doctor rang me at 3 a.m. about an appointment. At 3 a.m.? Really? I expressed that it was inappropriate to wake me up at 3 a.m. about non-urgent matters. This was hardly an emergency. ‘Stop being an emotional female,’ he said.”

On Burn out in training.
Take care everyone!
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-02-06/sydney-surgeon-doctor-hours-unsw-yumiko-kadota-stress/10784238
Dr Yumiko Kadota spent six weeks in hospital with insomnia late last year and claimed she was "barely able to speak or move" after resigning from her position as a registrar and crashing her car on the way home.
In a blog post published this week, Dr Kadota detailed how her aspirations to become a reconstructive surgeon were destroyed by long hours and combinations of stress, sleep deprivation, dehydration and gut problems.
"I was physically alive, but spiritually broken," she wrote.’

Hi! 3, 17 and 20 for the ask game? 💖
Thanks so much for asking!!
3. What were your top five books of the year?
In no particular order:
- Dear Son: letters and reflections from First Nations Fathers and Sons edited by Thomas Mayer
- Hallelujah Anyway by Anne Lamott
-The White Album by Joan Didion (I'm like 80% through this by I love it so much it's going to be a top 5 for the year)
- The CU hockey series by Eden Finley and Saxon James
-Mothers of the Nations: Indigenous Mothering As Global Resistance, Reclaiming and Recovery edited by Kim Anderson and D. Memee Lavell-Harvard (this was for my thesis but it's incredible and super accessible)
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
I wasn't expecting to like Emotional Female by Yumiko Kadota as much as I did - it's super easy to read and gripping (and she's a lovely human).
20. What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?
Boyfriend by Sarina Bowen (or Waylaid also by Sarina Bowen) might have been my most anticipated? I think? Of the ones I've read (I am so bad at getting around to anticipated new releases!). It was excellent, absolutely lived up to expectations!
