SAINT OF THE DAY (July 24)
Tumblr media
On July 24, the Catholic Church celebrates the life of St. Charbel Makhlouf, a Maronite Catholic priest, monk, and hermit who is known for working miracles both during his life and after his death.
On the occasion of his beatification in 1965, the Eastern Catholic hermit was described by Pope Paul VI as “a new, eminent member of monastic sanctity who, through his example and his intercession, is enriching the entire Christian people.”
Born into humble circumstances in Lebanon on 8 May 1828, Yussef Antoun Makhlouf was the youngest of Antoun Zaarour Makhlouf and Brigitta Elias al-Shediyaq's five children.
Antoun, who had been taken away from the family and forced into hard labor, died when his youngest son was only three.
Yussef studied at the parish school and tended to his family's cow.
Engaged in prayer and solitude from a early age, he spent a great deal of time outdoors in the fields and pastures near his village, contemplating God amid the inspiring views of Lebanon's valleys and mountains.
His uncle and guardian Tanious wanted the boy to continue working with him, while his mother wanted him to marry a young woman.
Yussef had other plans, however, and left home in 1851 without informing anyone.
Yussef would become “Brother Charbel,” after making a pilgrimage on foot to his new monastic home.
In this, he followed the example of his maternal uncles, who were already living as solitary monks at the Hermitage of Saint Paul in the Qadisha Valley.
Charbel took his monastic vows in November of 1853, during a solemn ceremony that was closed to the public and off-limits even to his family.
He subsequently studied for the priesthood and was ordained, returning to the Monastery of St. Maron.
The priest-monk lived and served in the monastery for 19 years, showing great devotion to the life of prayer, manual work, and contemplative silence.
Charbel's superiors observed God's “supernatural power” at work in his life, and he became known as a wonder-worker even among some Muslims.
In 1875, he was granted permission to live as a solitary monk in a nearby hermitage dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul.
Rigorous asceticism and a profound union with God continued to characterise the monk's life for the next 23 years.
Deeply devoted to God's Eucharistic presence, he suffered a stroke while celebrating the Divine Liturgy of the Maronite Catholic Church on 16 December 1898. He died on Christmas Eve of that year.
St. Charbel's tomb has been a site for pilgrimages since his death. Hundreds of miracles are believed to have occurred through his intercession with God, both in Lebanon and around the world.
Pope Paul VI beatified him on 5 December 1965 and canonised on 9 October 1977.

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT CHARBEL MAKHLOUF The Patron of Lebanon Feast Day: July 24
"St. Sharbel is called the second St. Anthony of the Desert, the Perfume of Lebanon, the first Confessor of the East to be raised to the Altars according to the actual procedure of the Catholic Church, the honor of our Aramaic Antiochian Church, and the model of spiritual values and renewal. Sharbel is like a Cedar of Lebanon standing in eternal prayer, on top of a mountain." -Bishop Francis Zayek during Charbel's canonization Mass in 1977
A Maronite monk and priest, he was born Youssef Antoun Makhlouf, on May 8, 1828, in Bekaa Kafra, Mount Lebanon, Ottoman Empire. Bekaa Kafra is a village located in the Bsharri District. He was one of five children. His father, Antoun Zaarour Makhlouf, was a mule driver who died in August 1831 while returning from corvée for the Turkish army, leaving his wife Brigitta (née Chidiac) a widow to care for their children. She remarried a man who later was ordained as the parish priest of their village. Youssef was raised in a pious home, and became drawn to the lives of the saints and the eremitical life practiced by two of his uncles, and while shepherding the family flock, he would spend the day in prayer. He would take the herd to a nearby grotto, where he had enshrined an icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
In 1851, inspired by two of his uncles, he entered the Lebanese Maronite Order (aka the Baladites) at the Monastery of Our Lady in Mayfouq (a village and municipality in the Byblos District of Keserwan-Jbeil Governorate). He later transferred to the Monastery of Saint Maron in Annaya, in the Byblos District near Beirut. And here, he received his habit and took the religious name of Charbel, after the 2nd-century Christian martyr of Antioch. After his ordination on July 23, 1859 in Bkerke, he was sent to the Monastery of Saint Maron, where he lived as a solitary hermit and severe asceticism.
In 1875, Charbel was granted by the abbot of the monastery the privilege of living as a hermit at the Hermitage of Saints Peter and Paul, a chapel under the care of the monastery. He spent the next 23 years living alone until his death from a stroke on December 24, 1898 at the age of 70, holding the Holy Eucharist in his hands.
A few months after his death, a bright light was seen surrounding his tomb. When the superiors opened it, the body was incorrupt. In the years 1950 and 1952, his tomb was opened and his body still had the appearance of a living one. He was canonized as a saint on October 9, 1977 by Pope Paul VI, who said: 'He makes us understand, in a world largely fascinated by wealth and comfort, the paramount value of poverty, penance and asceticism, to liberate the soul in its ascent to God.'
A great number of miracles have attributed to the saint since his death, with a total of more than 26,000.

GWS Interested in Jaeger OMeara from Hawthorn Hawks such as North Melbourne Port Adelaide West Coast and Giants Complete Jason Horne-Francis Huge Business
Greater Western Sydney made a surprising late bid for Hawthorne midfielder Jaeger O’Meara, meaning the Hawks are likely to concede O’Meara and Brownlow medalists Tom Mitchell in the next 48 hours. Club sources have confirmed that with a deal for insider midfielder Jacob Huber to Richmond likely to pass and reunite with Tim Taranto at Punt Road, the Giants are looking for experienced support and have made inquiries with Hawthorne about O’Meara. The giants are interested in trading for Jaeger O’Meara.attributed to him:AFL . Pictures The 28-year-old is signed for another year at the Hawks with big money but could sign a new multi-year contract at GWS on revised terms. Hawthorn can also contribute to his salary next year. But the club is still grappling with the prospect of O’Meara being ruled out and whether a deal can be struck. The Falcons want to improve their demo status and nurture the next generation of midfielders. The Giants currently have picks 15, 18, 19 and several other picks in the late rounds and will get other picks from Richmond in the Hopper deal. The idea for the move sparked at Stephen Coneglio’s wedding in Sydney over the weekend. O’Meara and Coniglio have been close friends since childhood and O’Meara is friendly with a number of Giants players. GWS contacted Zaarour on Monday to discuss a potential O’Meara trade. Mitchell is already likely to trade with Collingwood if a deal with Brodie Grundy to move to Melbourne is finalized. The potential loss of the seasoned pair will add to the departures of Jack Johnston – heading to Brisbane – and former captain Ben McEvoy as the Falcons seek to accelerate their renewal under head coach Sam Mitchell. Explore the beautiful mountain range of Zaarour and Sannine and enjoy ski Slopes in the winter and hiking & biking trails in the summer. You can enjoy activities on the lake and dine in the beautiful restaurants nearby. You can also discover an exceptional ancient archeological site in the Lebanese mountains dating back to the Byzantine era in Al Jawzeh, in the Zaarour region, at an altitude of 1,400 meters. The Byzantine village could be the remains of a rich estate from the 5th century, surrounding an imposing building with a monumental appearance. “The rectangular-shaped building was meticulously carved and executed; its stone blocks are well cut and squared and the walls are at least one meter wide. On a mound overlooking the building, a necropolis of six monolithic sarcophaguses dominates the skyline. Collective tombs (called communal tombs), containing up to 11 skeletons, were unearthed from the site. An inscription of the Roman emperor Hadrian, discovered in the immediate vicinity of the site, indicates that a forest had covered the surrounding slopes. “This inscription also means that an ancient road was connecting the village to the rest of the country. The location had eater, fertile land and wood, all the components needed for a human settlement that could live in total self-sufficiency. You will find a winepress on the ground floor of the building. The installation includes four grape-crushers (the juice was extracted by crushing grapes barefoot), and two 1.20-meter-deep collecting basins that received the juice after it had been filtered through settling tanks The settlement also includes workshops for iron-ore reduction and ceramics. This site prove that Lebanon’s highlands were inhabited for a long time. @escape_intothewild 📷 #escape_intothewild #zaarour #zaarourlake #sannine #lebanonsunset #Lebanon #beirut #hiking #hikinglebanon #hikingtrail #hikingadventures #hikingevent #adventureseeker #adventure_time #adventure #sunset #lebanonhiking #lebanonmountains #lebanonactivities #lebanonhikingtrail #photography #landscapephotography #bluesky #blueplanet #mountains #nature #naturephotography #trees #forest (at Zaarour Mountain) https://www.instagram.com/p/CAKqycMJFf5/?igshid=ofpvtjz5kbq9

Saturday in Chouar ez Zaarour
I discovered this spot where there's a rock human made semi road, that happens to cross with the lebanon mountain trail.
The view is over the valley overlooking the town of baskinta, sannine mountain and the beqish cedars.
Im sure if it was a little bit later in the day, you could see the sea.
