Autism, Almanac, and Arbors in April
April is one of the four months with only 30 days. (Do you know the other three?) The United States has no federal holidays in April. The closest day that might be considered a holiday is April Fool’s Day and I’m not fooling. From what I’ve read, the true origin of this strange observance is unknown, but there are many theories. Just be careful who and what you believe on April 1. Religious…

aApost from my archives has a sweet and surprising update. Read it here.
This month starts my 10th year of blogging, something I never anticipated when I posted my first piece in February 2015. This year I plan to revisit older posts to share updates and new insights with you. I am finding that some of these stories are updating themselves, like this one. (note, there are affiliate links in this post) In 2017 I watched a movie that moved me so much that I wrote a…

A Natural Woman- Carole King shares a lifetime of music, a season of pain
I just learned that today February 9 is Carole King's birthday. This is one of the earliest pieces I wrote for the blog. She and I have both grown older in 9 years but we've not given up on life.
A Natural Woman: A Memoir Although Carole King did not write “A Natural Woman” for herself (she and her first husband were asked to write it for Aretha Franklin), the song aptly fits her life also. She grew up in a close Jewish family, attended school where she excelled in performing arts, and graduated early. She married young and loved her husbands (four of them) passionately. She doted on…

Journey into January
Do you believe January is already two thirds over? only 10 more days to Journey into January. Our next "major" holiday is Ground Hog Day! Let's all hope he doesn't see his shadow as we need an early spring to recover from the record cold and snow January has brought to the U.S.
I remember the first time I walked into a store the day after Christmas and saw shelves brimming with Valentine’s candy. It looked like we were going straight to February and skipping January. But we don’t do that. Instead, we start the month, and the year, with another holiday, New Year’s Day, January 1, whose only purpose seems to be to celebrate itself. And to be fair, the celebration starts…

When will the U.S. have a woman president?
I didn't watch the Republican debate between Haley and DeSantis, but from what I read, it was engaging but somewhat predictable, each launching zingers at the other. With Christie now out of the race, things will heat up even more. I wonder who will drop out next?
Seven years ago I wrote in a post- “Anyone following the United States Presidential campaign knows it has become one of the most unexpected, unpredictable, and contentious races in history. And so far the candidates are only vying for their parties’ nominations.” Now, in 2023, I could write the same thing! (Remember: when I write about politics, my remarks are strictly non-partisan. My blog…

5 health resolutions worth keeping
A reader commented, "I am actively working on getting my weight under control. My husband and I have recently started chair yoga. I thought it would be easy, but it’s a bit of a work out. I have never smoked a single cigarette in my life. When your dad has his first heart attack at 38 and completely changes your world, you aren’t even tempted. I lost both my parents to smoking related diseases so I always preached NO SMOKING to my kids and my students! I love all these suggestions! "
I don’t make New Year’s resolutions, but I do think the start of a new year, whether it’s the calendar year, your birthday, or some other anniversary date, is a good time to evaluate our priorities and what we are doing to make them happen. So here I suggest 5 health issues we can evaluate and resolve to improve every year. I’ve listed links to previous blog posts and other sources that will…
