A Fairy’s Recipe for Brownie Bread

Seven drops of golden honey Seven pats of creamy butter Then you add a fist      Of dandelion flour One good speckled egg of sparrow Berries crushed with blossom-sugar Whisk it well and set      To rise for half an hour Dust a rolling pin with flour Spread the dough an inch in thickness Score it thrice across      The top before proceeding Brush it with the dew collected Solely from the morning Daisy Bake an hour and      Ta-da —                Pleasant eating!

I'm tempted to say that I'm not a poetry fan, but that wouldn't be entirely true. What I'm not a fan of is SERIOUS poetry. Adult poetry. Ponderous poetry. What I loooove is what poetry becomes in the hands of some with a silly sensibility, a way with words, and an audience of kids. Alice Schertle's "Button Up!: Wrinkled Rhymes" (2009) is a lesser-known but wonderful example of this. 👟👟👟 A book of clever, funny poems about clothing, written from the clothes' point of view, and illustrated in charming detail by Petra Mathers, this is a fun exploration of familiar objects from new perspectives. I love poetry for short storytimes and for prompting conversation with young kids. The Seelie Wight

His glowing eyes of silver Will shimmer in the night When summer’s golden afternoon Begins to lose its light The little bearded creature That they call the Seelie Wight The golden rays of Summer Begin to lose their light And that is when his silver eyes Begin to glimmer bright The little bearded creature That they call the Seelie Wight His little eyes that twinkle With mysteries untold His jacket green with yellow trim And buttons made of gold And when he asks a favor He repays it seven-fold He beckons you with one hand And holds you in his sway He leads you through a doorway in A hidden passageway But always brings you home again Before the break of day He’s very fond of singing He’s quite without compare He sings a song to charm you As he braids your golden hair And then he sings so you’ll forget That you were ever there!
