4. by the river/no reason at all (natashatony)

the shores were always crowded this time of year. oceans, rivers, lakes, all of them stuffed to the brim with tourists and locals alike, assholes found on every boat and jet ski, filling the place with alcohol and rafts and dumb decisions.

but even summer vacationers get tired. once in a blue moon, there’s a lull, when the ones that hold the seasonal passes decide to take an off day.

and natasha has a gift, a very special talent, one that gets her the first drink at every gathering, a toast every so often, and incredible bragging rights for her (and tony, when he feels particularly blessed to be dating her).

see, when natasha wants to go out and have fun on her summer vacation – no one else does.

sometimes it’s the weather. a fear of rain on a day that turns out to be cloudless. humidity beyond belief vanishing as soon as her friends step out of the truck. flooding making the rivers unmanageable receding just in time. sometimes it’s the occasion, post-holiday when every group is already spent and sleeping in until the sun sets. but no matter the reason, it’s her thing, and her boyfriend loves it, and her friends relish in it, and she never has to work up the courage to go out on a day that doesn’t suit her.

so natasha picks a day. multiple, even, when she feels like testing fate. and with one message in their lovely group chat, somehow maintained even after they scattered across the state, the avengers (named much to steve’s chagrin after a particularly glorious revenge-filled football game) descend on the rivers, cool drinks in hand, rafting until they find themselves just tired enough that keeping themselves afloat is a struggle.

today is one of those days. the air is perfect, sun bright, but not too keen on destroying all skin exposed to it. the river is cold, and it’s a cleaner day, trash kept to a minimum, the last groups to arrive being particularly good about picking up waste, saving the environment one beer cooler at a time. steve, sam, bucky, bruce, thor, clint, tony, rhodey, carol, maria, the twins, scott, hope, hell… everyone brings their suits, and no one is lonely, third-wheeling, or left behind. the speed is an easy one, and her and tony are sharing a particularly big floatie when she manages to open an eye behind her sunglasses.

the eye closes again. “you’re staring,” she remarks mildly, but her smirk eases the remaining tension from tony’s shoulders. the raft seems to balance. “is there something on my face?”

“like anything would dare besmirch your face without your explicit permission,” he responds, and some air passes through her nose, a full laugh too much effort.

“what seems to be the problem, then?” she asks, brow raising, and when he doesn’t respond immediately, both eyes open again to fixate on him. she even lets her sunnies rest on her hair, carefully pinned back from her shoulders. he’s smiling now.

“tony? what are you -”

but before anything even close to anxiety can settle in her heart, he leans forward, and their lips meet. short, sweet, nothing more than a peck, but she’s speechless, blinking once at the sudden affection.

tony’s eyes are trained on her now, and she’s sure she heard the sound of a couple of cheap waterproof cameras snapping pictures, but her usual refusal to participate in candid photo taking is pushed to the back of her mind, along with every other worry. hidden behind the hand that’s now holding hers, sun-tanned, warm, the good kind of rough on the inside.

“just glad i can do that,” he whispers. it’s almost a secret, the way he barely breathes it. she’s still leaning forward, catching the sentiment and feeling something like joy make her toes curl.

“you know? i think i am, too,” she finally says, and when she leans forward again, the only thought she has is to flip off whatever camera’s pointing towards them.

“You know, they say eyes are the window to the soul,” Natasha comments, waving a pen in between her index and middle finger. She sits on the edge of the table, right next to Tony, her legs crossed. Technically, they’re supposed to be working on reports, but there’s only so much dry professionalism they could write before they’re both bored out of their minds. “They tell you everything you need to know about a person.” 

“Mhm.” Tony stops his texting for a second, intrigued. He looks up at her through his lashes. “What do mine say?” 

Natasha narrows her own eyes, leaning in closer to Tony. She scrutinizes him, and he’ll admit to feeling a bit uncomfortable. And intimidated. It’s not everyday he gets a staredown from the Slavic Shadow. It’s like she’s seeing straight through him, through his flesh and bones and blood. “You’re lonely,” is all she simply says after a good few seconds of Tony sweating over what she might find in there. 

Right as Tony begins to relax, she starts up again, leaning even closer. He’d push her away, but... it’s Natasha. He trusts her. “You struggle with the idea that you can’t save everyone, no matter how hard you try. You seek validation for the things that you do, forgiveness for the things that you don’t. You have friends, but your heart is lonely.” 

Tony clears his throat and toys with the sunglasses he has lying down next to a piece of paper asking about any injuries that may have occurred on their mission. “Are you sure you got that all from my eyes? Jesus, Romanoff.” He leans back a bit in his chair. Next thing he knows, she might just blurt out his social security number. 

Natasha shrugs and, seemingly pleased with Tony’s reaction, sits back up. “I took a psych class.”

Thank you! I do work very hard at bringing the particular Omegaverse tropes into all parts of the story so it feels natural to the verse. The first time I wrote fangs I was like “oh yikes this is so obviously not natural, I’ll only sprinkle a few flashes of fangs in as a treat” and now I’m like “YOU GET A FANGY SMILE AND YOU GET A FANGY SMILE AND YOU GET A FANGY SMILE!” 

NatTony are precious in this verse. She is both protective and enabling and we will get a classic WinterWidow eating ice cream and judging each other scene, which has been a staple in my fics since the beginning lol 

I can’t remember if Bucky sees whats on the yoga pants or if he just finds out about it, but either way he gets up close and personal with that booty and that really matters. 

There isn’t a ton of SamBucky in this one just cos it’s Winteriron and short enough that I just don’t have the time and room to really meet all the other characters very much, but they do have most of a chapter together!

And thanks! I give Tony vanilla/cinnamon/cloves scent in my fics because those are baking smells and baking is comfort activities for me and Tony is my comfort character-- plus I ship Tony with everything and there are very few things that don’t go well with Vanilla and/or a hint of cinnamon and cloves. 

But I also LOVE Lemon and Honey for him. I like the Omegas to smell both drowsy sweet --honey, vanilla, lavender with Peter, cherry blossoms for Clint, rose petals for Omega!Steve etc-- but also something that immediately catches attention from an Alpha -- cinnamon, honeysuckle, jasmine, orange etc. So Lemon and Honey for Tony is perfect, partly for the combination of scents that mean “healing” to our subconscious and also because it follows those ^^ guidelines!

Accidentally you say? Mighty curious how one accidentally stumbles onto an au. Like, you came through the wrong door, liked what you saw and decided to stay? Well come on in and have a cup of tea! Want coffee? I got that too! And cookies. Cookies n cream ice cream that is. Got no chips but I do have pickled quail eggs if you’re into that. My sister is and she got me liking them too. A little spicy but it grows on you. 

There’s no fanfic of child of ours au. Not yet anyway. I’m thinking, once FP is off my shoulders, I’ll start working on fics for some of my au’s. I have plenty that can be full blown stories that are just running in my head! (like the incubus and demons au, the avengers farm au, child of ours au and maybe even stark holiday! Oh, and I got a whole new remake idea of the future is theirs au where instead of just stony children, there’s multiple children of different tony ships going back in time! Like a thortony child, a rhodeytony kid, stony of course, and even a nattony one, too!) 

But alas, for now ‘avac child of ours’ will be the occasional snippet I write here and there when the mood strikes me or if wonderful followers ask certain questions about it.

8. “I will dress up as literally anything else, but don’t make me wear this..” omg nattony please

“I swear to god, I hate you,” Natasha says, holding the costume at an arm’s length. “I will dress up as literally anything else.” 

“I personally think they’re hilarious,” Tony says. “And besides, you know I go all out for Halloween.” 

The costume that Natasha is staring at, in question, is an old-fashioned Western dress. Natasha doesn’t like putting any effort into Halloween; she usually wears all black, sticks some cat ears on, and calls it good.

Dating someone means doing stuff that you don’t want to. But she had forgotten that Tony’s known for going all-out on Halloween. Every. Single. Year. 

“I’m being a cowgirl?” Natasha asks, voice flat. “Are you joking?” 

“I didn’t get you the slutty costume, so I think you’ll be fine,” Tony says. “Or the one with the skirt! You have pants and everything. Besides, we’re not going as just cowboys. Vampire cowboys.” 

“Oh my god, you made it worse,” Natasha says, horrified. “You mean I’m going to have to have make-up done?” 

“And teeth,” Tony says. “I didn’t skimp. Besides, you’ll look badass. You ever wanted to have red eyes, sweetheart?” 

“...I have wanted to,” she admits. She sighs in defeat. “Alright, lead the way babe. I guess if I’m getting dressed it’s going to be now.” 

Tony cheers as he leads her to the team of artists and costumers who will help get everything right for the large Halloween bash. 

She supposes it could be worse, all things considered. At least he picked a nice, quality costume. She could wear these pants again and probably will. 

Tony grins, giving her a kiss on her cheek. 

“No makeout sessions tonight until we get the teeth out,” he whispers. “Or I’ll probably actually stab your jugular.” 

“Sexy,” Natasha drawls, keeping her eyes wide open as the woman approaches with fake lashes. “Do you know what others are going to be dressed up as?” 

“Clint’s coming as Jessica Rabbit,” Tony says. “Hill told him he wouldn’t do it but I think she forgot that Clint will literally do anything if you tell him he won’t. Or maybe she knew and wanted to see him show off some leg. Who knows?” Natasha snorts. 

“I think I heard that Steve’s coming as a zombie,” she says. “Relates to the whole ‘back-from-the-dead’ schtick he had going.” Tony laughs at that one. 

“I can’t wait to see him. His stance is already awkward and still enough to be a zombie.” 

“And when he sees Sharon in the nurse costume he’ll have the speech for it,” Natasha adds. 

As she gets the deep red lipstick put on last, she glances over to her boyfriend, who is fully enjoying talking with the make-up artists about their own plans. If they don’t have any, he encourages them to use some of his past costumes to show up to the party. 

She blows him a kiss. 

“Ready Tony?” 

“Ready as ever, darling.” 

(Next year, she thinks they’ll dress up as the Addams’ Family.)

I used to be kinda upset about what I felt could've been a v cool friendship b/w Natasha and Tony not really happening...I mean they have the redemption arc, public vs private masks (sorta-ish), issues with vulnerability etc. etc. Anyway, that is all to say, I really enjoy how you take canon!NatTony and make it into a subtle but definitely-there friendship in fics like Overhaul & GuysnBots! & then how you contrast that with Nat & Steve. Lovely stuff, & I always revert to your writing for inspo.

It is a shame, there’s lots of aspects like that that never got explored and I guess will never be except in in fannish imagination. Like, Natasha taking Tony’s side (even if “only” initially) in CW was a real chance for that, and that Natasha knew Tony first among the OG Avengers, stuff like that. And thanks, I’m glad you like the little bits of their friendship in my fic! If it inspires more like it, that is A+ very awesome. :D

stevetony, buckytony, Samtony and lowkey Nattony are all ships I could get behind, although I only rlly highkey ship the first two (as in regularly write/read. consume content for them). Honestly though im down with any ship involving tony because he like....deserves to get railed u know...like it’s been a hard life for him i just want him to be happy u know....

as for non-tony ships, I’ve got harleypeter, samsteve, peppermay and thorsteve. But like again, only the first one is Highkey
