The Prom Queen was an exceptionally fun and bloody romp through Shadyside. It pulled off having a large cast of characters much better than many of its Fear Street predecessors, at least so far as the five prom queen candidates went. I can’t say the same for the boy characters; they all kinda blended together aside from being suspects. There are also some great examples in this book of how you don’t have to be a killer to be a total fucking creep. It was kinda funny how the students and parents were all anxious about the recent murders in Shadyside, as though murders don’t happen there all the time. It was also pretty ridiculous that the school would put on a play and do the prom on the same weekend. I mean, Shadyside is hardly a normal town, but maybe this was a tradition in some high schools. I can’t say for sure. It sounds like a logistical nightmare to me. In fact, I would say my biggest issues with the book were the baffling decisions made by the minor adult characters. I was pleasantly surprised by the twist at the end. That alone elevates this book for me. The plot may have followed a familiar Fear Street formula, but I felt like The Prom Queen was one of the best-executed books to use it.

Retro Reads--#KTAW Edition
In honor of #Kiaratheronappreciationweek, this #retroreads submission harkens back to the fic that spawned my Liara series (that I desperately need to return to and give it a title).
The story was born because of my answer to an ask from Porn Nonny; a writer I greatly admire said she would love to read a fic where Kiara is a naughty girl in the bedroom, a side of her we rarely see ... if at all.
This month, join me as I revisit the very NSFW tale of The Arrangement, which pairs Liam x Kiara. I rate it M for Mature due to lemon concentrate.
Tagging with most recent taglist (original post date is September 21, 2019), and including the #KTAW crew in case this #throwback may fit in with any of the daily themes.

Switched might be the most frustrating Fear Street book I’ve read, in part because it started out with such a wild and engaging premise. For the first half of the book, I was convinced that this was going to become my favorite Fear Street book so far. The first twist that came (after the initial premise laid out on the back cover) really hooked me. It put our main character into such a weird and precarious position. There were so many fantastic possibilities of where the narrative could go. As the second half rolled on, I began to suspect that a final twist was coming. I was genuinely hoping my suspicions were wrong, but they were not. Stine ultimately took one of his coolest concepts and ruined it with a tired trope he’s used in multiple other Fear Street books. I could cite two titles off the top of my head, but I’ll save the spoilers for below the jump. If my expectations hadn’t been built so high in the beginning, I might have been more forgiving. I don’t think I’ve felt this let down by a story since watching M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village. I wanted Switched to be the book that the first half of it led me to believe it would be. Maybe one of the new Fear Street movies can take the best parts and make something better with it. As it stands, I’m just really bummed out at the wasted potential this story had.
