An Anatomy Tutorial
Tumblr media
Heya sorry this took so long!! OK so just a disclaimer before I begin: I still have a LOT of room to improve as an artist, plus I actually don’t take the time to study anatomy very much myself lol so take my words with a grain of salt. My personal opinion is that when it comes to drawing, it’s more important to understand how to approach bodies + understand forms and proportions than it is to necessarily know anatomy, so this is a general guide on that I suppose (with some words along the way about my thought process when drawing).
First of all, I need to link you the single book that every artist needs ever: Figure Drawing for All It’s Worth by Andrew Loomis. PLEASE GET ANDREW LOOMIS’S BOOK ON FIGURE DRAWING this book taught me like everything!! It is the second image on this page; while you’re at it, you can grab his other books too. There are many other good books out there but I honestly can’t think of one that would be a better starting position than this one.
The most important thing to getting anatomy right is the proportions of the body. Even if you know and can draw all the individual muscles of the body, if the proportions are off, the entire body will look very off. You will find that even for very stylized bodies, they follow many of the basic proportions, which goes to show how important they are. Below is a quick demonstration with two different body types - you’ll see that the proportions apply to both. There are many more than these, but these are the primary proportion rules I personally keep in mind. (Note: Take #6 with a grain of salt because it’s just something I’ve generally observed myself, not an actual rule)  [hi-res image]
Tumblr media
After you come to understand proportions of the body more, you can move on to constructing the body. A really important thing is to break the body down into a handful of basic solid forms, essentially simplifying them before you add details on top. A lot of people like to use stick figures or spheres and cylinders - personally I’m not a fan of either since they tend to lead to rather rigid bodies, so I like to use forms that are based off of a modified skeleton. The skeleton (devised by Loomis, by the way) is what I sort of keep in mind when I do the next step below this one. [hi-res]
Tumblr media
When actually drawing sketches, I simplify the skeleton and draw the body with solid forms. The torso in particular can be kind of tricky - it’s easier to think of it like a flexible jellybean or a bean bag. Additionally, try to draw all of the body at once quickly, you’ll better capture the movement of the body as a whole and the pose will look more natural than if you were to start with details at one end. Below are some quick example sketches close to what I would usually start with. The general order that I draw a body in is: torso -> legs -> arms -> head. (Note: The vast majority of movement in a figure is carried in the body and legs; after that it pretty much doesn’t matter where you put the arms and head because they only change the general impression of the illustration a marginal amount.) [hi-res]
Tumblr media
After this point I start to rough out the general shape of the body, getting the major muscles and forms. Think like a sculptor and get the main forms down, but leave the details for later. It’s only after that that you can start to add more details for the actual muscles of the body. Below are the main muscles and forms I think of, which probably aren’t accurate at all so you may want to consult an anatomy book lol. Even when it comes to muscles it’s important to think of them in terms of solid forms! Think of them as solid lumps or wedges that piece together. [hi-res]
Tumblr media
It will probably take a while to get the hang of doing this, because in reality, even if you know to think of bodies in terms of proportioned solid forms, it will take much longer to train your mind’s eye to actually instinctively think that way. In a way, becoming better at drawing is more like becoming better at the way you imagine things in your head, rather than becoming better at drawing lines on the page. Additionally, besides just drawing these forms, it’s good to get out there and draw people from real life! Draw models, draw ordinary people on the street, draw everybody. All in all, it’s a long journey but it’s a very rewarding one!!
And I think this concludes my tutorial(?). Apologies for the length, to be completely honest this is a topic that I’ve wanted to talk about for a really really long time. A lot of stuff here took me years and years to realize (god forbid some of the old ways I used to start my sketches) and I hope I can maybe save someone out there all the trouble of figuring this stuff out! In summary, it’s all about learning the basic forms of the body, changing the way you think of drawing, and applying that to the paper.

Do you have any tutorials about your anatomy style? I adore it
Hi ! That’s really sweet actually, but no i don’t haha - i don’t think i’ve ever made a tutorial before? I wanna try though, so thanks for asking about that! ^^
i made a small one here for ya (please don’t hestitate to ask for some more in-depth ones, or on other specific anatomic areas!):
SHAPES AND BODY PROPORTIONS
- i mainly base my anatomy on shapes and fast lines !
- i like to start out with fast, rough sketches, built on partly stick figures and circles/cylinders. You can easier find more movement, weight and dynamics in those fast lines!
Tumblr media
- The cylinders and circles i drew in the right side here are probably something we’ve all seen before - but it IS a really nice and simple way to get started on understanding how our limbs are put together!
- be careful of drawing your lineart directly on top of the cylinders though (if you’ve drawn the cylinders/circles directly onto the character), as it can make your character look a bit ‘’square’’? They’re more like building blocks, where you gotta add some muscles and volume to the limbs after those blocks, to make them come alive ^^ (look to the red shapes on the left that i normally draw - there you can fx see on the calf and the forearm that i’ve widdened the cylinder in some areas, and narrowed it in others, to show volume)
Tumblr media
- Here i’m further showing some shapes that’s ‘’hidden’’ in the sketch
- notice that i drew the head smaller than the chest-circle - if i had drawn the head even smaller, she would have looked way taller. And in return, had i drawn it bigger, she would have looked shorter. I like this particular head-to-body proportion though - it looks well balanced! (and you can always make the legs longer, the upper body shorter, add more weight or maybe less muscles, or whatever combo of proportions that floats your boat - that’s the fun part, and what really creates interesting and different characters!)
- Tip: thighs are slightly longer than your calves (average height). If you make the calves longer, the person will appear much taller - and the opposite as well. This is where it’s nice to be an artist tho, bc you can create whatever the hell you want :)
- Tip 2: When your arms are hanging down by your sides, they usually reach down to right below your pelvis. (If you make the arms longer, the character might risk looking a bit like a monkey)
Tumblr media
- see i’m a bit messy, because i just go directly from a rough sketch to something akin to lineart (like this pic). But that’s what works best for me ^^ (I only really use the sketch as guidelines for what i can mess around with on the next layer)
- the above pic is possibly a little too stagnant to properly show what i mean with the flowy/bendy lines - they’re best put to use when the body is in action, after all. But you can still sense them, even when the person stands still! I also think it gives them a bit extra gravity.
2 small examples of how i make stuff:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
—
I can make a more in-depth tutorial where i go step-by-step on specific areas, if anyone would like to see that - i could also continue this one, since i made it in a rather short time, just to test out making small tutorials (it was fun!)
bear in mind that this is all just based on my own observations! Hopefully it can help just a little ^^

I don't mean this in any jokey or disrespectful way; is there any truth to the alchemy in say, the Full Metal Alchemist anime? The symbols or transmutation circles?
Actually the author of FMA did a ton of research into historical western alchemy. The whole law of equivalent exchange is a real alchemical concept from hermetica, and one that sir Issac Newton expounded into the law of thermodynamics.
The elrics dad, Van Hoenhiem, is based on a real alchemist named Theophrastus Bombastus Von Hoenhiem. At one point Pride even references the real alchemists name.
Basically everything about alchemy in FMA is taken from primary sources, down to the symbology of transmutation circles to the color scheme of Edwards design.

being a self-taught artist with no formal training is having done art seriously since you were a young teenager and only finding out that you’re supposed to do warm up sketches every time you’re about to work on serious art when you’re fuckin twenty-five

Hi!! I love your art style and all of your art a ton :) i especially like how you do clothing. Would it trouble you to do a little tutorial? Im working on fabric and clothing myself and tbh im already using your art as reference. I like how you draw fabric so fluidly as well as how detailed and realistic it looks!! Id really love whatever tips you could offer, but either way, thanks for sharing your art with us!
wow omg thank you so much??? i tried my best to explain a few things i try to keep in mind when i draw clothes, feat fashion icon sokka themselves.

i think the world doesn’t know what it really means to live in a theocratic dictatorship. Let me tell you about our experiences living in the islamic regime of iran.
1. Your parents were born to muslim parents so they’re automatically muslim. You’re automatically a muslim too. You didn’t choose your religion and you can’t opt out of it or you will be executed.
2. The compulsory hijab law makes you a criminal if you choose not to wear hijab even tho you didn’t choose to be a muslim and you don’t consider yourself a muslim but the regime has forced you into that role whether you like it or not. And when you ‘break that law’, they can do with you as they please.
3. little girls as young as 7 yrs old are forced to wear hijab at school even tho the islam itself says the age is 9. and all the schools are gender segregated so imagine how they force you to get used to hijab even when you’re just surrounded by other girls. And all day long at school they tell you horrible stories about what will happen to you in hell if someone sees even a strand of your hair.
4. the regime modifies all the textbooks, story books, cartoons and movies to represent the ideal woman with full on hijab. The iranian media is ordered to photoshop every photo of a woman that may be showing a little skin. And if they’re iranian, no hair is supposed to be seen or that will be photoshopped away. Women are mostly excluded from billboards and tv commercials.
5. imagine going to work or meeting up with a friend when suddenly the morality police kidnap you in broad daylight and force you into a van to take you to a station where they will treat you like a criminal and if you don’t agree to get humiliated and do as they say, they will put you in prison. And in case of Mahsa Amini and so many more before her, they will beat you to death. My sister was barely 18 when she got kidnapped and they didn’t let her call home and she’d been so fucking scared and we had no idea where she was. Imagine all the psychological trauma.
6. If you’re in a car and not wearing hijab they will fine you and seize your car. So when u get into a taxi the driver will ask you to keep your hijab on otherwise they’ll get fined. And if you refuse they’ll ask you to get off the car.
7. And its not just about hijab. In Ramadan, they get even more vicious. If they catch you eating or even drinking water on the street they will give you lashes as punishment and even imprison you for breaking the law. If you work in a state-owned company it’s even worse. They will close the cafeteria and take away the water dispensers. All restaurants are banned from delivering food before iftar. It’s a fucking mess. Everyone has to pretend they’re fasting or they’ll be severely punished.
8. And how could I forget about this! iranian women are banned from singing! the islamic regime prohibits women’s singing voices to be heard by men so imagine the horror of having 50% of the population banned from ever becoming a singer. If they identify a female singer in iran, they will take her to jail and force her to repent her sins in the most humiliating way so that she will never dare sing again.
9. And every time the regime gets wind of a private gathering of men and women trying to have fun and live their fucking private lives, the police crash the party and take everyone to jail bc the Islamic regime bans iranian men and women from having fun.
So if you see Islam has become for many iranians a symbol of oppression and torture and discrimination, that’s why. The regime uses islam as a weapon to silence and punish anyone who opposes them. You can love islam all you want from the safety of your home in a free country and talk about how kind and benevolent the religion is, but in iran, it’s a whole different story.
Our economy is fucked. All govt officials are corrupt as fuck. Most websites are banned in iran. Even tumblr is banned. The world has cut the iranian ppl from many services. We don’t have intl credit cards like visa card. Amazon doesn’t do delivery to iran. We cant get netflix, spotify or even a gamepass subscription. we don’t get any Apple services here. iran isn’t listed as a country you could choose when signing up for a lot of services. and when we decide to leave iran and escape this hellhole, every country out there will make it sooo much harder for us to get a visa just bc we had the misfortune to be born in iran at the wrong time.
This is the story of iran for the past 44 years. Held hostage by a corrupt regime that uses religion to suppress and torture the people and being abandoned by the rest of the world bc our lives don’t matter.
Please be our voice. Once they shut down the internet completely and silence our voice, they will start slaughtering us to stifle the protests just like they did in 2019. Please help us. We want this fucking regime gone.

If you’re not keeping up, Cartoon Network sold off most of its original programming over the last few years to run exclusively on HBO Max, but after a merger with Discovery, HBO has taken them all down, including those that were still in production, for what is long story short a big tax write-off. And it’s not a simple matter of them just airing or streaming somewhere else now. It’s a very complicated issue of rights and contracts and money but essentially these shows may never, ever be available again outside piracy and their creators may never get money again. Some completed episodes may also be lost media. For a couple of series, such as Mao Mao and Infinity Train, Cartoon Network has gone back and scrubbed all tweets, youtube clips or other mention of the series existence, confirming they likely no longer have the rights to take them anywhere else. The tweet today by the creator of Tig N’ Seek made me saddest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A lot of people this week have simply given up on their industry careers, seeing years of their life’s work just vanish into a corporate vault overnight. Being able to point to your work on a streaming service had apparently even become a pretty critical part of the portfolios they now rely on to get new jobs.
Streaming media went from an optimistic new frontier to even worse than cable TV so suddenly.

The Very Basics of Not Killing Your Computer
AVOID HEAT STRESS
If you have a laptop DO NOT use it on a soft surface like a pillow or on a blanket, it’ll block the vents on your computer and make it get really fucking hot inside.
If you have a desktop you gotta open it up and blow out the dust sometimes.
If you are moving your laptop in a bag turn the laptop off. Don’t put it to sleep, don’t just shut the screen, turn it off, because otherwise it’s in the bag generating heat and there’s nowhere for the heat to go in the bag. OFF. Not sleep. OFF.
DO NOT DROP
Okay I know that should be obvious but drop damage to your hard drive is bad bad news. Be as careful as you can to set your computer gently on flat surfaces; don’t leave it hanging out on a bed where it can get knocked off, don’t set it on the roof of your car. And yes, just dropping it a couple inches can kill your hard drive or totally shatter your screen.
DON’T PUT SHIT ON YOUR KEYBOARD
Look I’ve seen four people ruin their laptops because they had a pen on the keyboard and closed the laptop and it fucked up the screen and the keyboard and it sucks so much and you feel awful after it happens because it’s so avoidable just don’t put things on your keyboard and always check that your laptop is clear before you close it.
PROTECT YOUR PORTS ON YOUR LAPTOP
You’ve only got one power jack and a limited number of other inputs on your computer and if they detach from the motherboard you’re fucked. USB ports get damaged because people use them a lot and eventually it weakens the connection and then they just stop working and it sucks. You can get around this with USB ports by using a USB hub to connect things like your keyboard and mouse.
For your power plug you just gotta be careful. Avoid tripping over the cord at all costs, don’t yank the plug out of the computer. It will SUCK VERY MUCH A LOT if you have to buy a new computer because the power port lost contact with the motherboard.
Don’t move your computer with things plugged into it. Take the power cord off before you put your laptop in the bag, take out the USB mouse dongle, do not travel with little nubby bits sticking out of your computer that can easily get caught or get tweaked or snap off inside of the thing.
(I really can’t emphasize enough that most of the “it will cost more than it’s worth to fix this” laptops I see are because of USB ports and power jacks. People don’t seem to know that this isn’t something that can be fixed easily; a broken power jack is a “remove the motherboard and resoldier components” job, not a “plug a new one in in fifteen minutes” job and most computer repair shops aren’t going to solder things for you and if they DO it’s going to be very expensive)
RESTART YOUR SHIT AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH AND JUST LET THE FUCKING UPDATES RUN
You should probably restart more than once a month but whatever. This is actually something that I consider part of reducing heat stress because when your processor is straining to keep up with all the background bullshit that’s running from a program you opened three weeks ago it’s going to use up resources and get hot and look just restart it once in a while.
Also the updates are almost always okay and safe and generally running updates is a good and secure thing to do (though maybe follow a blog dedicated to the OS you run because if there IS a problem with the updates that blog will probably talk about it before the update gets forced on your computer)
ANTIVIRUS BULLSHIT
Yes you should probably be running an antivirus.
Sophos is free and it’s fine. But don’t pay for it - if you’re using Sophos use the free version.
If you’re looking for something paid and a little more comprehensive I recommend ESET - get the cheap version, renewals cost less than the initial purchase, and feel free to get a multi-year version, the credentials follow your email not the computer so if your computer dies before your license expires you can install the license on a new computer.
DO NOT INSTALL NORTON OR MCAFEE THEY ARE EXPENSIVE BULLSHIT. Kaspersky is whatever. It’s less bullshit than Norton or McAfee but not as good as ESET for about the same cost.
If you think you’ve got a virus run the free version of Malwarebytes and get your shit cleaned.
KEEP LIQUIDS THE FUCK AWAY FROM YOUR COMPUTER
Again this should be obvious and yet. But seriously, just make a rule for yourself that drinks aren’t allowed on the same table as your computer and you’ll save yourself a lot of headaches.
PLUG YOUR COMPUTER INTO A UPS
Okay I fucking hate amazon but here’s a thing you should be using, just search the rest of the internet for “surge protector/UPS” and you’ll find something that isn’t from amazon - APC is a solid brand for this.
Basically you want a fat surge protector that has a little bit of a battery backup and you want to plug your computer (desktop OR laptop) into that instead of into the wall. The benefit of this is twofold:
1) if there’s a power surge the UPS will prevent your computer’s power supply from getting fried and possibly frying parts of your motherboard
2) if there’s a power outage and you’re *at* your computer you’ll have enough time to save what you’re working on before your computer loses power (like, you’ll maybe only have a minute or two on a small UPS but that’s still time to hit CTRL+S and keep from losing work)
At a bare, bare minimum your computer should be plugged into a surge protector but NOT directly into the wall.
BACK YOUR SHIT UP
[we interrupt this yelling for me to tell you that Western Digital has apparently released their new My Passport line and I’m obligated to inform you that you can get a 2.5″ USB 3.0 backup drive with FIVE FUCKING TERABYTES OF STORAGE for $130. Or you can get 4TB for $93. Or you can get 1TB for $53. basically what I’m saying is that it is not only cheap computer season it is also cheap hard drive season.]
[also if you’re getting a backup drive get western digital not seagate seagate fucking sucks and has a much higher failure rate]
Uh, okay, anyway - Do an image backup of your computer every once in a while so that if you get infected or your hard drive dies or whatever you can just restore from backup and move on like nothing happened.
HERE’S HOW TO DO AN IMAGE BACKUP.
SAVE YOURSELF THE WEAR AND TEAR
You know what is cheap? USB Keyboards and USB mice. You know what is not cheap? Fixing the touchpad on a laptop or replacing a laptop keyboard.
Get yourself a USB hub, a USB Keyboard and a USB Mouse (wired or wireless, doesn’t matter) and if you’re using your laptop at home plug *that* into your computer.
Also if your keyboard on your laptop breaks it’s fine just to use a USB keyboard instead I promise; if the screen breaks it’s also usually cheaper and easier to get a used or inexpensive monitor than it is to replace the screen. Your laptop is basically just a very small version of whatever bullshit is going on inside a desktop, if the peripherals break but the core components are fine you can just use it like a desktop.
Unless it’s a piece of shit that doesn’t have any USB ports or video out in which case you got ripped off, friend, demand functionality in your devices I’m sorry.

How I Study Anatomy
Everyone says NEVER TRACE!! THAT'S ART THEFT! Ok but we can do a little crime in the name of Learning.
Trace to learn, not to earn.
I like to take my own photos, but you can study whatever you want. Link back to original photos, and don't post copied artwork unless the artist is dead, cool with it, or both.
As always with learning, start every sketch with the intent to throw it away (trash for paper, quitting without saving for digital) This takes the pressure off and lets you make Bad Art, which is very important.
So let's make Bad Art of a Deer because I happen to have one handy
Start with a photo of your subject in a nice/neutral pose with all four feet visible. (so not like me)
Tumblr media
Freehand copy it. Try not to stylize, focusing instead of matching proportions and pose. Don't get too detailed!
Tumblr media
It's ok if your art looks terrible and has broken legs. I've drawn LOTS of deer so I have a leg up. Everyone's art sucks in their own eyes and here's where mine went wrong:
Either lasso-distort (recommended for beginners) or redraw a copy of your first sketch with your reference behind it (scaled to match the main body of your sketch)
Put the original and modified sketches together and compare the differences. Write it down if you want. This shows you where your eyes saw things the wrong size, so you can correct for that next time.
Tumblr media
After learning about both deer and yourself, try freehand copying again.
Tumblr media
Marvel at your newfound knowledge and skill!
but there's always room for improvement
Tumblr media
You can stop here and move on to your real drawing, Or do another freehand-fix-compare cycle. I actually overcorrected my "draws heads too big" and veered into "heads too small."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another note on tracing: Learning HOW to trace is more important than anything you could learn By tracing. Draw the Anatomy, not the outline. In real life, things don't have outlines, they have bones.
Tumblr media
These are from the same shoot which is extra useful for consistency. The lines are minimal and follow where the animals joints are, and only important parts are drawn.
You won't know what Important Parts means right off the bat, which is where in-depth study comes in. You need to do learn the hard parts to do the easy parts right.
Next up: how to study bones and muscles.

hope this is readable and understandable
my process is pretty straightforward and i like to keep things simple (hence why everything is loose, loose lines and loose coloring) if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask! ill reply them with my main account (aaronboreasu) bc this account cant reply to comments… LOL (or with messages is cool too)
