My theme for August is Hanafuda - Japanese Playing Cards. Fun fact, there are twelve suits of cards for each month, and August is the silver grass, so my cover page can match the emoji 🎴! Yesterday I finished this portrait study in gouache. I've been planning this theme all year since I planned to do Pink in July, and that matches Utena. Revolutionary Girl Utena has been a hugely influencial manga/anime in my life, for the beautiful visuals, the fantastic queer representation, and the theme of healing from sexual abuse and CPTSD. I'd dabbed lots of different colors of gouache around this Zentangle Phi tile, but I wasn't sure how to approach tangling on it. Then I saw today's #toyoutangle2021 prompt "Nature's Light" that is basically using the frame of a stained glass window to tangle in. I added a few touches of metallic silver as highlights on the leading, and am bemused at the unintentional cross from using Ratoon where I did.
